Interesting Class. Lots of work but professor extremely fair. Has a good sense of humor and makes course interesting. Eager to answer questions. Very Clear explanations.
As the previous rater stated, he's a very nice man, but not a good stats prof at all. Very confusing b/c he makes tons of mistakes. Disorganized notes. Discusses politics and history in class. IMO, he should be a history prof- not a math prof. If you know stats well, take him. If you don't know it, there are other better profs for you to take.
Very nice man, but not a good stats instructor. More concerned with getting through the material than having students comprehend it. His lectures contain very little explaining- just quickly going over example problems. He makes A LOT of mistakes during lectures and on exams. I'm happy with my grade, but I had to teach myself everything.
Such a character! Math isn't my strong point but he made it bearable. Pay attention, do the homework and you'll be fine. He goes off on different topics and current events some times but I thought that was a nice break from math. TAKE HIM
Professor GK is a character. The biggest problem in the class is the book. He doesn't use it and he doesn't like it so therefore it makes it almost impossible to practice problems. LOOK OUT for his homemade gambling problems ~ you won't get it ~ trust me. And the points are huge. But overall he's an alright professor.
Hes a character! His notes are disorganized though.
took Stats with this guy- cool guy, horrible professor. so unorganized. late to class. talks a lot about drugs and how he knows Arnold Schwarzenegger. assigns homework from book but he doesn't even like the book. harsh grader. i wouldn't recommend this professor for statistics (math54)
The only difficulty i had in this class was that once i understood the wording of the problems in the book it was hard to understand the problems on the test because he would use different wording. He did not teach through the book. He is humorous and understanding. If you stay after class or see him in the Math Lab he will help you in what you nee
Prof Kamin often loses focus and goes off on a tangent unrelated to the class. Tests and quizzes very difficult and worded much differently than what we practice in class or in HW. He doesn't answer HW questions in class and doesn't go over quizzes. I frequented tutor center, studied, did my HW and still had trouble in his class.
Terrible. This is my first ever stats class, and boy do I wish I took another professor. Easily distracted, often makes errors (margin of error = 95%), and is the most disorganized person I've ever met. For me, he's left nothing but a bad impression on the subject.
TERRIBLE!!!! He should teach music or history but NOT MATH. He hastily shows examples on the board then throws more difficult ones on tests. The only way i got through this class was by NOT paying attention and teaching myself from the book!
DONT TAKE! In terms of a professor, awful. Very unorganized and doesnt know what he's doing. He is a nice guy and TRIES to make the class laugh but you will not walk away with a good grade or even knowing statistics. You have been warned. (Seriously, don't take)... SERIOUSLY!!!!
what are you guys talking about?! HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR AT ALL TIMES! If you do his HW problems you will definitely pass the testes and quizzes, half of the classes were failing at the beginning because nobody bother to study. But if you insisted and show your effort he will try his best to pull up your grades!
While it's true he makes little errors that can sometimes cause confusion, other than that he's a good teacher. He wants you to do well and he want you to learn. If you do the homework, show your work how he asks, and are there to learn, you'll be fine. He'll take the time to help you out if you ask.
the work you put into the class is the grade you get out of it. He is a great teacher that wants to help you achieve the best possible grade you can get you just need to show him that you're here to learn and he'll give you a lot of one on one help since his office hours are in the math lab. Great guy who loves what he does
I love this guy... Stats is hard... every section is new material and new concepts, you will have to read the book people.... If you want an A take this guy and go to work... He is a fair grader and has extra credit available.......
HE GIVES ALOT OF HW HOWEVER I GAINED A VERY CLEAR UNDERSTANDING WHICH IS MORE THAN I CAN SAY FOR MANY OTHER PROFESSORS
This class is not easy at all, but by far he's a great professor. Will take the time to help you if you need it. Yes, there's hw but it only helps you for tests. He's lenient and is good about understanding where the class is. If you need more time, he may extend a test date. Do the hw, study & you'll be fine! Def. recommend & he's funny (a plus)!
overall, he's a good professor. He engages his classroom by going through the basics. Most of the time he can go off on tangents, like sports and music, but he's a very enterntaining. If you don't understand the material, he does have office hours you can go to. GO TO CLASS! DO THE HOMEWORK! ASK QUESTIONS!
Jerry is a great teacher. He does curve the class. He plays music at the start of every class and is a very nice guy. Study for the tests, its not a very hard class. Math 7 is way harder.
He is amazing!!!!! He is super funny, keeps you up with current events, & plays music in class. He is nice when grading your exams, but the class does require a lot of work & weekly hw.
He tends to have a negative attitude and outlook and unfortunately takes out his pent up mental issues out on the class, during class time. he often forgets what he's doing, and often misses many important details when teaching. calculator heavy course which some may or may not like
Such fantastic professor . So nice and so fun
He IS the type of professor that SMC needs the most. What kind of professor dedicates his free time to come an EXTRA hour before class to help their students? not many. His class? it's so enthusiastic and fun because of him. Challenging? hell yeah. BUT in a great learning experience way. he is one of those you'll have so much respect.
Second time taking class and will pass cause of prof kamin. He is hard but cares about helping if you do the work. Great teacher.
I cant say any thing but he is awesome. So helpful , cares about you !
Had him for both math 2 and 7, and he is the coolest professor I've had so far at SMC. Really funny and really clear with what he expects, but you definitely have to put in the time to get an A in the class. Exams are fair and homework is mandatory. Take him
I took his class in the summer. He's a nice guy. He will take out time to help you if you need it and can refer you to tutors in the math lab. He does go off on tangents but it's usually pretty interesting practical information about current events and such so its a nice distraction from the suffering if you're not really into math.
Professor Kamin's lectures were very clear, unfortunately how he explained problems in his lectures did not coincide with the way homework problems were formatted. It was very stressful to spend so much time on homework when the exams and quizzes are purely the way he explains it in class. Why bother assigning book work then? Very disappointed.
"You guys want to hear about my opinion on an unrelated subject that has nothing to do with the test for tomorrow? Ok." "How about I work on a real difficult problem that is not on your textbook but will be on the quiz with this really small piece of chalk" Just, do yourself a favor and don't take him.
very clear, funny, but sometimes does problems in class that aren't in the book, and assigns problems in the book that he doesn't go over in lecture or on quizzes/tests. you need to put a LOT of work into it, but if you attend every class, he works hard to make sure everyone understands. if he sees that you're trying you will be rewarded.
I love this guy!! He tells the most interesting stories while he erases the board to keep our attention and is the best business calc teacher. Do all your homework, and if you are confused, go to his office hours, and he will explain everything. highly recommend, curves all tests, if you put the time in, you will do well. love you kamin!!!
Prof. Kamin was the BOMB. He always had a grin on his face, taught the math very straight-forward, CARED about his students (he was big on attendance and questions from the hw), and he played music in class! Also he's just a super chill guy, makes decent jokes, and will keep you entertained. Take the class. The guy's a solid teacher.
Professor Kamin gives you everything you need to know for his tests. Quiz questions come from homework, test questions come from quizzes. He's funny, sometimes gets distracted but always helps when you ask for it. Plus, you have the book and the math lab, use them and you will get an A.
i love you kamin.
Taking his class is a bad decision. He is unclear, unorganized, easily sidetracked, and inappropriate in class. He tries too hard to be your buddy and not enough time being a college professor. Don't waste your time or money on him.
Please listen to me,Just take him.
Really good teacher. Just a little hard.
Gerry Kamin is by far the funniest professor I've ever had at SMC. The problem I find is his lack of clarity. My tutor explains in 10 minutes what it took him to teach for 2 hours. A tutor is a MUST HAVE for this class. He's open for office hours which are typically before class, but don't expect to see him before a midterm though, it'll be packed.
Professor Kamin has terrible handwriting, his lecture is too disorganized and confusing. He yells at students for using a smartphone to take a picture of the board. He talks about unrelated things that has nothing to do with math. I don't recommend taking his class, he's too caught up with his own issues, needs to focus more on math.
Professor Kamin gives you everything you need for tests and quizzes. Quiz questions come form the homework, and the tests questions are usually the difficult problems he solves on the board. So just do the homework and you'll do fine. Another thing is that he is usually easily sidetracked, but that is to keep the class interesting.
His class is interesting. really explain everything clearly, but his class is not easy. He is a tough grader and many quizzes. He tells you most of the test problems before the test.
Took Professor Kamin during Summer 2016. We took five exams, no quizzes, and had one final. He drops your lowest exam and an 85 % is an A. He teaches the material very well, but often gets distracted. Prior to exams he will tell you the exact problems you should know how to do. Overall, I would recommend him if you have a decent math background.
Professor Kamin is by far one of the worst teachers you could ever have, his teaching style is so fast paced and if you ask him to slow down he'll insult the whole class, and his notes are all over the place on the board, his mind is so scattered and his quizzes are extremely difficult. Only good thing about him is that he's good with office hours.
Professor Kamin always late 515 mins to class all the time, no one understands his hands writing. His teaching style is fast (but still later than plan) and I suggest you read book before the class. Try to make fun in the class. Quiz and Exam will have few same questions that he teach before.
He grades very tough on the exams; small errors will cost you almost the entire problem. The homework is worth about 10% of the grade and there's a lot of it, so make sure you stay on top of it. He tends to move very fast in lectures, which can be difficult if you're learning concepts for the first time. DO EXTRA PRACTICE.
Prof. Kamin is very sweet. He cares about his students' well-being and his tests are pretty straightforward. If you take him during the Summer or Winter, however, you need to get ready to go super-duper fast. He gives a lot of homework and it's due every Monday before every test so you have to be really invested.
Professor Kamin was a good professor. Although he was late at least 5 minutes every class period he was still good. He's always willing to help whenever you need it you just have to ask for the help. He holds office hours every day after class before his next class meeting he also has additional office hours in the math lab at least twice a week.
He is a professor that tries to make jokes, or references to things that he likes during class, this distracts students from learning, also he will try to find the hardest problems for his tests, if you ask a question he will get mad, if you feel confident about math, avoid him, by far one of the worst professors ever.
Not that great not gonna lie
Really good professor. He gives clear explanations and makes the class entertaining as well. Just do the homework and use office hours and you will do well.
A really great guy, cares a lot about his students. Gives hard tests and grades harshly, but his grading rubric is extremely generous. He's very funny, but very political. Be prepared to hear about his opinions. He's a solid choice but isn't the best I've had at SMC.
1)Lots of homework. It would help a lot if you do it carefully. 2)He kept making mistakes when teaching. He will say today is not my day when he makes mistakes, apparently everyday was not his day. Reading book and youtube video helped me a lot. 3)Tests are a little bit difficult, but he grades generously. Overall, NOT worth the money I paid.
Prof. Kamin really knows the subject, and he is great at explaining complicated concepts. He will go out of his way to present different examples of how to solve a problem if we seem confused. He does have high standards and expects you to do the homework and be prepared, and if you do this he is very fair and your grade will reflect this.
I really enjoyed this class. Prof Kamin understands the subject. very well and is great at helping his students during office hours. His class is framed in a way to help you get a good grade and if you put the work you can definitely get an A. 4 tests (including the final) and 5 quizzes. homeworks are due before every quiz or test. Overall enjoyed
exams are so hard, he literally pulls the most difficult questions off of the textbook which is a bad textbook btw and then uses them. makes me feel incompetent when i ask for help. pretty condescending when the class doesn't succeed, but his lectures are decent.
Professor Kamin is by far one of my favorite math professors I have ever had. He gives out a good amount of HW exercises to prepare his students for both his exams and quizzes. The most important thing is that he really inspired me to love mathematics and his studying advices really prepared me to succeed in my following math courses!
Hard professor, be ready to study a lot! Not an easy A!
Honestly, the worst professor/teacher I've ever had. Lots of hw that are mostly the same questions over and over followed by incompetent during class trying to teach but ending up either messing up the problem or going off on random tangents. And his lectures are mostly just examples problems. Would never taken if I knew this man before
Great professor. If you want to learn math really well, take him. He is a very fair grader. If you are lazy and dumb and looking for an easy class, this is not the guy for you.
prof kamin is ok at teaching part but not helpful if you miss class and have questions. Tells you to do homework and ask about it then if behind no answers in the class. office hours not good cuz not always there for all of them. Do not take if need to miss class or no time for to much hw since a lot of hw.
Hardest professor I've ever had. Not helpful at all and makes you feel helpless. SO much homework, quizzes and tests all the time, and most people withdrew from the class near the end. Wouldn't recommend unless you're a statistics prodigy.
I am not good at Math. But his class is easy to understand. I took Calculus for business major ( Math 28 ) Winter 2020. I enjoyed the class. The test is similar 90% with the homework. Great professor!
Professor Kamin is amazing. I took Professor his class a few semesters ago and received an A. He has high expectations for his students. To get a good grade, make sure you really understand his lecture materials and do your homework. Because the quizzes and exams are similar to his homework problems. Highly recommend him!
His teaching style is doing problems straight out the book and expects to cover an entire section in 25 minutes with little explanation. He constantly goes off on unrelated tangents and shows up every class severely unprepared. He claims to be available for students but cancels his office hours regularly. Unclear grading. I do not recommend.
Bc of COVID class turned into distance learning and he was very accessible outside of class. He provided lots of office hours, and really helped explain something if youre confused. Nice and chill prof. Since its calc the class isnt going to be easy but he provided good amount of help.
This was a business calculus class so of course it is going to be difficult especially because it was suddenly turned into an online class due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Professor Kamin was really helpful and made sure we understood the material throughly. If you work hard and make sure you understand the material you can get an A.
One of the best professors Ive had during my college experience. He truly cares about his students and wants to give out good grades. He explains content thoroughly and goes over what concepts will specifically be on tests. Only complaint is that he tends to make a lot of minor mistakes during lectures, like adding instead of subtracting etc.
Lectures are hard to follow unless you study beforehand; he goes straight to problems w/o explaining theorems, proofs, etc. Tests are a bit hard but not as bad as some other profs. Nice guy overall but acts like a boomer (e.g. calls IG "Instacrap") which can be annoying after a while. Grades fairly for the most part, but 90% of it is from tests.
A decent pick compared to other SMC math profs. Sometimes goes on long unrelated rants but his test is easy to predict (usually it's similar to the questions on the homework). He gives students information before tests and if you do the homework without going on chegg or slader you'll do just fine (I only did the homework and still got an A).
Should call Gerald Kamin. You should never take his class if you cannot spend 99% time on self-learning. Awful teaching technic turns out a terrible professor, always showing mercy by appearances, leaves you alone to face a ton of complications, and then he tells you how sad his students got bad grades and how hard he works on music but math. Run
If you can avoid taking his class, do it. Unclear how he grades tests, doesn't return marked up tests, goes on unrelated tangents. Emailed him questions multiple times throughout the semester and he either didn't respond or just didn't answer the question I asked. I did rather well in the class and that's because I took the time to study the book.
Professor Kamin would much rather focus on his poignant 'music' career. Boasts how difficult calculus is, but does not actually teach students how to solve such difficult problems; pretty pretentious, no? Unclear grading, exams are never returned; so you don't know where you fell short. Loads of homework, but all graded by online software. Beware.
Great professor. Extremely thorough and interesting lectures. Cares a lot about his students really understanding the material. Highly recommended.
His way of teaching the material is inconsistent, messy and confusing. He uses a small whiteboard to teach which runs out of space fast, he gets confused/forgets what part he left at or what part had what, and does a lot of steps in his head. He leaves a lot of material out, expect to learn it by yrslf. The online hw teaches you more than he does.
Graded exams arent given to u, u must ask for them. He said hed give us our grade before drop deadline(11/20), never did. Calls us his friends are we tho? If he is our friend he should teach better for our good. Cares to much of his image, big egomaniac. U are wrong not him because hes taught for 30+ years. MUST USE HIS METHOD OR U R CHEATING!
If youre a decent math student, he's pretty good. Don't lie to yourself, if you cheat alot and don't find yourself understanding math concepts in prev. classes, maybe not for you. Most good rev. have 1 dislike so im assuming its just one salty student. If you want to actually learn, hes good enough. As a person, unless youre really picky, hes aight
Honestly, horrible experience. Not much else to say. Unclear grading criteria, and never posted grades throughout semester. Did not learn a single thing from his boring/confusing lectures, must learn everything from textbook or outside sources BUT (and I quote) if you dont use my method(s), you are CHEATING. Avoid Professor Kamin at all costs.
I don't understand where some of the negativity comes from. He always told students what their grades were. Lectures were clear and understandable. The grading was very fair. Since the class is online, he does try his best to monitor online cheating and I think this upsets some students.
DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A GOOD GPA. After the first test when half the class dropped he said - I thought more would drop! He is very inconsiderate! He grades unfair and without any explanation. no extra credit. Lectures extremely difficult to follow. Thinks using different method is cheating - threatens to report you for that!
Homework has many questions that are only for practice no grade so. the only grades in the grade book are tests, you can drop your lowest test. you can only use methods taught so if you have a hard time with math and use outside sources like khan academy and they use a different method and you use that on the test you get the question wrong.
Excellent Professor. Explains concepts and examples very thoroughly. Not the easiest professor but well worth the effort.
Prof Kamin is a difficult prof so come into the semester with the intent to give it your all and you should pass. He is very accessible and helpful outside of class and I highly recommend going to office hours for extra problems/help. A lot of people say he was horrible but I disagree, they say that because they just want to get an easy A.
Overall, Gerald is a good person and tries keep his class interesting. However, it was really hard for me to focus 2.5 hours during lecture. It's just for me - my personal opinion. He won't except other solutions to the problems if you haven't discussed them together. You need to study hard! I was just lazy lol. So if you take this class pay atensh
- half the time his problems and answers are incorrect. - he makes me question where he got his teaching credentials from. - he makes it important that we only use his work for hw and exams except he doesn't even show all his work. - he does not know what elaborating and explaining your work means. - horrible handwriting, gives you no feedback
Professor Kamin was great at teaching. He breaks down tough concepts and uses multiple examples to explain them. However you have to use the exact method taught in class/in the textbook if not he might suspect you for cheating. Which was kinda stressful especially if you used external sources to learn the concepts.
He explains everything well, especially clarifying questions, but he goes too fast and makes many small mistakes during lectures. Graded by 4 tests, but you can drop one and he takes 2-3 weeks to grade them. Homework is average, but very long and repetitive. Participate during lectures and he'll give you bonus points.
He is a very tough grader who gives no feedback on the test, you must meet with him in after hours. Homework questions do prepare you for the tests. He is generally a great person. No other method of solving questions will garner credit. When solving questions fast, he gets the wrong answers, very is frustrating. Blurry camera made it hard to learn
Prof. Kamin is genuinely one of the best math teachers I've had in SMC. He has a fair grading criteria and he only tests you on questions similar that are given out on his homeworks. He always has office hours after his classes which I found very helpful as you can ask him help for homework questions or mistakes you made on tests.
His class is not fair. During the name call, he only give you two seconds to say "Here", if you didn't react quickly. Congratulations! You were absent. If he call you to answer a question, you didn't react in two seconds, guess what? Congratulations MF! You are absent again! Promise me, guys! For your ass-saving, never take this professor's class!
dont take his class if you are going to take online classes. He is not tech-savvy at all. He uses a white board during lectures and is often in front of the camera a lot. For his lacking ability to use technology he should focus on explaining the material way better and saying less jokes. He also takes forever to upload grades & cant upload notes.
If you're good at calc this class is like 5/10 difficulty, but if you struggle I would recommend office hours/tutoring. He gives extra credit to students who participate and drops your lowest test score. His handwriting is messy and he often makes small mistakes during lectures so be on the lookout.
Nice guy. Excellent professor. Explains difficult concepts clearly and makes the class enjoyable. Challenging but doable.
I took this class over the summer and the homework/lectures can be overwhelming. All HW was online. His handwriting is a little messy and he makes a lot of small mistakes when lecturing so be on the lookout. I would recommend forming a study group if you struggled in math 7.
Prof. Kamin is a funny guy, I found his jokes funny even the ones that weren't lol. He does tend to make a TON of mistakes during lectures, his lecture is him working out example problems from the book...paired with him getting constantly lost in his calculations. He does offer Extra credit opportunities and when it comes to hw, it's a so-so amount
A typical lecture is him carefully going over the concepts for the section he is covering. He then goes over examples, starting with easier problems and then doing more difficult ones. Occasional careless mistakes are made when he does calculations in his head (should use calculator). I learned a lot in his class.
TAKE HIM! I never had a professor so generous with the grades (85% + is an A, and round you up if you are a good student). His study guide questions resemble the test. He is hilarious and makes everyone laugh (tell him he's 45).Those who complain don't put in any effort and expect exact exam questions on the study guide. I will truly miss his class
Mr. Kamin cares about his students, but his strict phone policy often leads to distractions during lectures. Homework load is heavy, with unexpected updates. His Socratic method and intentional mistakes can confuse, but attendance is key. Best for students with prior calculus knowledge or willingness to study independently.
His teaching style won't fit most of people. You won't get real notes from him. He's also fast paced, so you better not miss any class or else you're screwed. Most importantly, his study guides don't really help you. He will always pull out a random question that's not on the study guide, and makes the questions harder then the study guide.
I think he was a good professor overall. He gave study guides, and if you are able to understand the concept and how things work, you will be able to get an A. He lowers the grading system so above 85% is an A, which I think is great. He also goes through several examples in class so we know how to solve different questions. I'll take him for math8
If you already aren't good in math and do not want to ruin your GPA, I personally do not recommend. He is funny/inspirational though, but he also does a lot of mistakes during his lectures and has a messy handwriting, which is okay but it gets overwhelming overtime - especially if you are already struggling with the material itself.
He is only decent if you have experience in whatever math class you are taking with him. The guy has a huge ego and constantly goes on tangents. Makes a lot of mistakes. I had a better time teaching myself outside of class, but his attendance is mandatory. Only good thing is his grade distribution.
He started off good: reasonable homework, tests weren't tricky and covered learnt material, etc. However, he made lots of mistakes and kept getting confused when teaching the last (and hardest) unit, resulting in only one person doing well on that exam. He also hates phones, is extremely paranoid, and talks about politics/zombies/aliens frequently.
Don't take him if math isn't your strong subject or if you haven't already taken calculus. Lectures, homework, and study guides match test material. He uses the socratic method when lecturing and thus makes a lot of mistakes, but it ensures people pay attention so I liked it. He drops your lowest test and an 85% is an A, which is nice.
Professor Kamin's class is challenging, but engaging. His teaching style can be specific, but engaging with it pays off. The textbook is useful, and unstuck study proved to be a great study aid alongside other resources. Overall, a rewarding course for committed students.
I am usually good with math but I've never been stressed out this much. He comes unprepared and says that it's because he likes to solve questions with students. You'd think he would teach how he solves problems, or at least get the problems right. He gets confused with his own questions and says he was rushing himself. Try your best to avoid him.
