shoot your head before taking this course. tests are rediculously hard and his lectures don't help.
Very good teacher, very clear and knowledgable. Test... may god help you. ALthough I would take his course again for the appreciation of math I've received, not to mention respect for math majors. Overall good teacher who needs to balance tests.
Hard, hard, hard and more hard. I guess you learn a lot that way, you just dont get a good grade.
He stands in front of the board mumbling gibberish and writing furiously. Ask a question, and he re-writes what's on the board, glares at you and says, "See? It's easy!" He teaches way above everyone's head. Tests are impossible.
Oh my God this guy is the worst professor. He can't teach his exams are impossible, and overall He so far the WORST professor. NEVER take this guy
Tests are impossible.. if you never took calc in high school, you will not pass this course.
The worst teacher every!!
Sageev isn't as bad as everyone says. If you have ever taken Calculus before, this class will still be hard, but you will get a better understanding of Calc. He makes you learn the proofs, so if you don't like them, don't take his class.
Terrible teacher. Bottom line nothing else to be said other than OMG he's so dreamy!
If he wouldnt bark when he asks if there's any questions, i'd raise my hands. he says the material is "very easy" its near impossible. if u take this class may god have mercy on ur poor soul as i hope he will on me
Makes relatively easy subject matter nearly impossible on quizzes and tests. Somehow got an A but would strongly recommend another professor, there's hundreds for 142, lol.
If someone else is teaching this course, go with them. No further comment.
Its bad enuff that 142 is a tough course, but when u add to that a teacher who goes a mile a minute, gives ridiculous amounts of hw, hard ass quizzes, even harder tests, and then doesnt clarify what the class average is, you get this guy. Good luck passin
Horrible.

He just teaches over everyones head
He's tough. He'll actaully make you learn the material instead of breezing through the class.
TERRIBLE! He is unorganized, confused and is intentionally difficult. He will teach the material in very basic form and on the test add twists to the problems that make them 10X harder. His syllabus was given in the 3RD WEEK OF CLASS! No useful information on it at all. stay away if you care for your gpa.
He says he wants to help then literally says 'don't bother me', when you ask a question. Miserable man.
Very hard exams. Horrible teaching skills.
He is a very confusing professor! The recitation is the only thing that saved me. Once you understand his teaching style, he is not as bad as it seems. You have to put in a lot of work on your part to get an A, but I am managing to do that! Test are not as bad as people say, he gives a lot of bonus points. If you have another options take the other
Very hard, and very confusing class. The only way to do good in this class is to read the book, do the problems, and hope that everyone else fails ;) *Gives a lot of bonus problems
Many people think that he is confusing and rambles on; he does, but he is actually a good teacher. While he teaches theory mostly and gives fewer examples, its the nature of the course. If you stay on top of the reading and ask questions in recitation, you'll do very well in this course.
I've had worse math professors, but if i were you i wouldn't take this guy. Lectures were completely useless, if it wasnt for my awesome TA would have failed that class.
instructor has no office hours; is unapproachable; blames the student for not learning; generally unhelpful;has difficulty explaining linear algebra to beginners; if you use this textbook, find & buy the Study Guide - it helps.
He seemed totally uninterested in the class. The syllabus was given out three weeks into class, and then too it consisted of one single page telling the students of the professor's email id and contact info. Very very bad TA, bad teaching, hard tests, sometimes takes attendance, sometimes doesnt. A clumsy, stupid teacher. Dont EVER take him.
grad student's don't even understand his test
Absolutely the worst prof ive ever had, many times confuses himself with his own examples, not clear, rambles alot. No slyabus until 4 weeks in. Gives ALOT of homework. if you ever get him for 121, i suggest just reading the text book it helps alot. I've taken 141 and this class confused me.
Worst professor ever, too bad he's tenured because if he wasn't he probably wouldn't have a job. Don't take this class with him! The only easy thing is to realize that this guy is a terrible professor! He expects you to know the material as well as he does!... COMPLETE CRAP!
Makes lots of mistakes, useless to ask him for help. Rescitation a must!
Recitation is a must. The only good thing about his class is that the grades are so bad that the curve is huge. He assumes everyone knows more than they do. He gave a quiz that he said would take a half hour to complete, and after 50 minutes very few people were done. Would not recommend.
get out while you still can!probably the worst calc teacher you can have.
so so horrible. i just gave up on this class after 2 tests. i feel sorry for the people that are stuck with him.
Calculus 1, Math 141 is already a difficult course. He made it more difficult with insane tests and quizzes. You know it is going to be a tough class when he says that 50-70% is good. He is unclear and his examples are terrible, the book is better. I learned more in the help center than from him. His tests are worthless.
Calc 141 is a really tough course. He rambles; focuses on teaching proofs which can be rather tedious. His tests are the hardest of all the other calc teachers: has a huge curve. I learned a lot from him, good teacher, just really hard tests. Do your HW (it helps at the end). Recommend for Math and Engineer Majors, no one else take.
I took his Calc. class a LONG time ago;this may longer apply. However,I must say, that he never bothered to go to his supposedly "mandatory" Office Hrs. i.m.h.o.he's one of those Professors who is all about "Publish or Perish" - He's not a teacher, but a researcher.Take him if you are good at math; but if you anticipate trouble, take another class.
Yells at you when you ask him a question, tries to sway you from coming to see him during his by appointment office hours. He just stands at the chalkboard for 50 minutes and shows off his equation derivation skills to the class. He puts topics on exams that he tells us will not be on them. I would not recommend this professor to my worst enemy.
One of the worst professors out there. I rather shoot myself than take a class with him. This guy needs a mental evaluation. He assigns over 60 problems a week which will take you most of your weekend to finish, and calls it easy work. Exams are extremely difficult and blames the low test grades on your studying skills. His lectures do not help.
There is no way to prepare for his exams. It's either you know the material previously from another time you learned calc 3 or you fail. Everyone in class is lost as usual and he is very disorganized while giving lectures. This man needs to retire NOW! He is destroying peoples lives with his horrible skill called teaching.
I do not know where to start with this guy. He teaches like everyone has seen the material before and should know what hes talking about. Tons of Hw that isnt even graded. He just gives a check. There is no organization. Don't take him!!!!
He's definitely not as bad as everyone thinks he is. He teaches clearly, and even though he does some abstract proofs, that's the nature of the course. His exams are not that tough as long as you study, and he gives a huge curve. Make sure you look over your notes once every couple of days, and don't cram the night before an exam.
People need to stop complaining about him. Sageev and Schanuel (whom I had for 309) are both great, experienced professors who love teaching, and they both teach theoretically because this is college and not high school math anymore. If you have at least a slight interest in math, you should enjoy their classes.
You have to study from the first day to get good grade. For all math and engineering majors, he will make your concepts clear, so going with him is better for your future. At first it may seem difficult, but you will be ok. also the exams have bonus questions, so getting an A is not that tough.
He tries very hard to be a good professor, and even though his office hours are by appointment only, his door is almost always open so that we can go in whenever we have questions. He does have high expectations for his students, which is why some calculus students seem to complain, but if you know what he tells you to know, you'll be fine.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! he doesnt talk to you, he talks to the board. you feel too intimidated to ask questions becuase he barks at you and says its easy. i could probaly learn more from anyone else in the univese. he is very mean. is you care about your GPA stay away
Good professor. Doesn't put up with other people's crap. Doesn't answer stupid questions, and is mean first few days in order to weed out people who shouldn't be taking the class in the first place. Will tell you that it really doesn't matter how slow he goes, you're still not going to get it. Hey, at least he's honest.
Intimidating teacher who is too smart to be teaching this class. Assumes everything is easy and doesn't answer questions or doesn't answer them completely. I HATED HIS CLASS with a passion. (i'm a math major)
Tough and demanding. Ignore his threats the first couple weeks of class, he gets better and almost becomes nice as the semester goes on. He says the exams are just like the quizzed, they aren't. When you leave the exam room of course everything becomes clear. You'll learn alot but you grade will probably suck.
He's the worst teacher at UB. Doesn't explain anything and makes you feel bad for asking questions. His tests are ridiculously hard. Thanks for ruining my life ;)
The WORST!!!! I cant believe that they let him near a class room. He is no help and even told me to "talk to him when he is getting paid for it".. He is rude and very unprofessional. If you plan on understanding this class you will probably end up reading the text and "pauls online calc notes" good luck your going to need it.
Worst Professor at UB, teaches like all his students are mathematicians, runs out of class so you can't ask questions and when you do find him he pretty much refuses to help you. Doesn't respond to emails and doesn't have open office hours. You'll but so much time into his class and still fail when you could get an A with any other prof. DON'T TAKE
This was the hardest class I have ever taken all thanks to this teacher. He goes through problems says "every one get it? good lets move on." No one ever gets it. His tests and quizzes are redic hard. The class average for quizzes was 20, 40 then exams was a 63. His quizzes take just as long as the tests do too. STAY AWAY if you like your GPA
I TOOK AP CALC IN HS AND I STILL MANAGED TO RECEIVE AN F IN THIS CLASS. THIS PROFESSOR IS EXTREMELY INCOMPETENT B/C HE DOESN'T TRY TO HELP STUDENTS. FROM BEGINNING TO END OF CLASS HE'S TALKING TO THE BLACKBOARD. HIS CHICKEN SCRIBBLE ON THE BOARD IS INCOHERENT. HE'S PROBABLY UB'S WORST PROF, THUS A LIABILITY MORE THAN ASSET. BE SMART AND AVOID HIM!!
Sageev seemed like a nice guy in the beginning, but he would just assign a ton of homework and rush through the lectures. I dropped the class after seeing him belittle anyone for asking questions, like THEY were stupid for asking. Side-note: he wore the same sweater-vest every day. Brown.
The mandatory workload is minimal, but you need to do it to keep up with the material. His lectures aren't very useful, so get to used to reading the book. Also, the grading policy isn't very clear and you will have no idea what to expect as a grade until you get it at the end of the semester.
I was in his class for two days before I dropped. And I am glad I did. He never faces his students when lecturing. He writes and faces the board the entire time. And he asks if you "got it" and then moves on before people can say no. I love calculus and I took it last year. I was excited for this class but he made me hate it. Find a different prof.
this guy has tenure so he's not going anywhere. He doesn't help doesn't post office hours and messes up the formulas and equations he is supposed to be teaching. If you have him as a teacher, switch to a different teacher right away, the guy is way past his prime.
I did not realize it but he really is a not a good teacher. Many have told me he was bad but not till now do I realize (Mid-Sem). Advisers and Cohorts have advised me to not have him as my professor. Now it really is biting me in the rear.
The worst professor I've ever seen! He has no responsibility and no respect to his students who ask him questions! If you wanna ruin ur life, then take his class.
Too many proofs, doesn't explain clearly. Good for math majors, not Engineers; we use math only as tool to solve our ENGINEERING problems. refused to have office hrs. Needs to retire NOW. He's teaching low MTH 141 etc because he's mean to admins and they punish him by making him do something he doesn't want to do; bad for freshman. USE TA'S!!!!!
He's not the most helpful professor in the world, but his exams were pretty fair (at least this semester). Everything was right out of the book. Study hard, college is not easy kiddies. Things don't get handed to you any more like they did in high school.
this guy was extremely hard. He asked you to prove some of the theory or identity that he put on the board. And he seemed somewhat unpatient if you went to ask him questions. Even thought I got an A in this class, I still think he was a very difficult teacher. I put a lot of effort in this class.
Although his lectures can be confusing at times, he is actually not that bad of a teacher. If you didn't already take Calculus in high school, then I'm sure he's harder, but I never went to class until towards the end and I still got an A. At first he will not take attendance, then he will make it mandatory.
Instead of teaching you how to use a law or theorem, he just does a long proof about it. Does not answer emails, and is not approachable at all. If you love pure math, he's your guy. If you're an engineer, get out. Tests are very hard and consist of things that are irrelevant to calculus. TA's usually say "what a d-bag!" about the problems he asks.
Does not teach at all and if you attempt to ask a question he replies with some ridiculous statement such as, "you don't know the law of cosines? why are you alive?" or "even fish know calculus" the tests are very difficult and aren't similar to the homework assigned. He is unapproachable and seems complacent with teaching in general.
Oh, I forgot to mention (I originally posted on 10/25/11) that he is blatantly breaching the terms of UB's employment contracts by literally refusing to schedule office hours. To those who think that this is what college is like: There is a *BIG* difference between not being spoon-fed and not being left completely alone. Sageev does the latter.
Horrible teacher. Tests are impossible and do not reflect what was reviewed in class. Very demeaning to you if you dare ask a question. Cannot believe I had to pay for this class.
He is mean... If you ask for help he will basically say he wont help you. He gives you a quiz and then a test. He asks if everyone understands but hes looking at the bored so he doesnt see the students who are uterlly confused. He literally made me change my major. If you work outrageously hard you can get a B- If you can, avoid him at all costs
I got an A in his calc I class, all it requires is a lot of studying out of the book and some ingenuity. If you study very seriously, you'll do well. But if you want to goof off (like most of the previous posters probably did), you'll get destroyed. Pay attention; he basically tells you what to expect on his exams and bases them off the textbook.
If this is your first calc class... good luck. you will need it. he has a poor teaching style. at first he is mean, but gets nicer. very difficult tests. but, if you do your hw. and study out of the book you will survive and get an A like me. he gets a bad rep. but he does what he can to help your grade.
Very tedious man. Talks to the board and tries to explain his work by saying "this thing and that thing, do this to get that" Not helpful. Doesn't understand students' questions. Tests are the only grades, and are mostly conceptual problems rather than like homework problems. Homework takes hours and doesn't help grades. Always Keeps class late.
His teaching methods are awful. Just read the book, and do the homework (the meaningful parts of it, a.k.a. the problems that don't require proofs). I learned virtually nothing from him. I self-taught the whole course and somehow got an A. The class average for the final exam was in the 30s, wow.
His class is tough. He's abstract at times, but expects you to come prepared to learn. Sometimes you feel like your mind has been blown after one of his lectures. It pays off though, if you work hard you'll come out of Calc 1 and Calc 2 will be a breeze with the foundation Dr. Sageev provided. I recommend him if you really care to learn the subject
Terrible teacher.Has the hardest tests in the entire math department.Teaches beyond the course material. Bonus questions count against if answered wrong. Isn't good at answering questions at all
Very difficult to follow his lectures. He makes several mistakes in class, so if students don't correct him, you may be left really confused. You will be teaching yourself most of the time. Exams are tough, even with prior knowledge in the topic. I recommend avoiding this professor if possible.
No syllabus. Exams are handwritten and hard to follow. Does not explain his grading policy. If you ask a question during class, it will not be answered. Homework ... not sure it was even put into the grades...
COMPLETE GENIUS.... ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSOR.
YOU WILL FAIL!!! he is veryyy smart but he doesnt know how to slow it down for students. All of my engineering friends failed his class as well as me. Do not take him. There is no structure and his test are impossible. I would not even know how to start one of his test problems. When I retook the class I got an A.
In hindsight he sucks! I have a good job in mechanical engineering and his demands are not reasonable. He's not brilliant. He's a man who has taught the same nonsense for decades. We'd all be brilliant belittling freshmen regarding the law of cosines after 30-years of practice.
quite abrasive, but funny
Dr. Sageev makes you know your stuff, and study hard (he gives at least 40 problems including proofs/week of homework). In order to do well in his course, it appears that you would need to spend well over the recommended number of hours on it. If linear algebra is your thing, then I'd say take it with Dr. Sageev & work hard. Otherwise, steer clear!
His class was the only one that fit into my schedule and had I known what I was in for I would have waited. Assigns a massive amount of homework which does not help to prepare for exams. Only grades are quizzes and exams. Very unclear, doesn't answer questions and very reluctant to make appointments for office hours. Always grumpy.
Doesn't have office hours. Will not respond to emails. Over tests - tests are completely insane. Avoid at all costs. This class has been a complete nightmare
Possibly the worst professor at UB. Department chairs tell people to avoid him at all costs. His class consists solely of derivations. He refuses to hold office hours and runs out immediately after class so you can't ask him a question. Does not teach how to apply equations. Tests consist solely of proofs. Mumbles into board. Avoid him.
Tough teacher, but tests are fair. He teaches directly from the book, so make sure you're doing problems from the book. Tests are difficult and he doesn't give any hints to what his tests will focus on. Make sure to do all the homeworks. They are optional, but very useful for test preparation. Put in 10-15 hours per week, and you'll be fine.
Awful awful teacher. Perhaps the worst ever. DO NOT take this class. Hard to follow, a lot of Hw, and his home made tests are impossible. Did awful in his calc 3. I would normally never write a review of someone but he is so bad that I took the time to do this
This prof. is useless. I knew the material already but still found hard to keep up with him. He takes more midterms than anyone and gives a lot of homewor. Dont take this class even if you dont get any other instructor.
This man has no interest in your education. He refuses to answer questions, help students, and will scold you for answering questions wrong in class. Avoid him at all costs.
Useless professor. He will unteach things and leave you blank with maths
Please DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. He is a horrible teacher and person. He teaches to the blackboard, ridicules students who participate, refuses to answer questions or repeat himself, tests are impossible expect 20s-40s averages, and he gives ludicrous amounts of homework, most likely to provide himself with an excuse as to why everyone's failing
Worst at UB. 1) Go to every class. He says attendance isn't mandatory but starts having you sign in a couple weeks in. 2) Do all homework and hand it in to recitation 3) Do not give up. My tests were 38, 26, and 59 and I'm pretty sure I bombed the final but I got a C-. Not the best grade but all year I just was terrified I was going to fail.
There are so many homework. The exams are too hard to get a decent grade. Average score of quiz or exams are around 30-50. He will not answer your "silly" question because you should know them before taking this class!!! Got nightmire because of this class. Never take his class!
tough exam and homework, amazing lecture, give lots of example during the class, work hard before the exam, its will be fine
Absolutely the worst professor I've had. Unprofessional and very quick to blow off your concerns. Tests are poorly constructed and often unsolvable. Good luck trying to get extra help. He doesn't have office hours and is VERY difficult to meet with. You've been warned.
By far worst professor I've encountered at this school. He doesn't answer questions straight forward and if you need clarification he will very quick to put you down. He is very straight forward and will tell you if you will fail his class. IMPORTANT: Engineering professors make a note of warning other students to avoid this professor at all costs
A rigorous course. He makes you work for the grade. Sit in the front row and maybe you'll be able to read off the chalkboard. Tests are too many but straightforward.
This Professor was absolutely terrible. It was very difficult to determine what chapter he was on. Spends the whole class jotting down random proofs on the board. Don't expect to get anything higher than a 50 on a test. There was tons of homework and none of it was relevant to what was on the exam.
Don't do this to yourself. Learn from the people here and avoid at all costs.
Please, just please not this.... If you have no option other than his class, consider taking your MTH class in the next semester. Probably God suggesting you, son take a break from Math this semester or else Gershon will happen to you.
Sageev is an awful lecturer. But he primarily looks at proofs and concepts of problems and it overall will help you understand a lot of things instead of memorizing. The questions in the book that come after his homework questions are good examples of the questions he puts on his test to look over them as you go and you'll surely succeed.
Took him for calculus 1 and Linear Algebra. He's a tough teacher but brilliant mathematician. Has unique notation that he explains in lecture so attendance is highly recommended (only about 40% of the class shows up) . Work the book and attend lecture and you won't feel betrayed at the end of the semester.
His lectures are completely incoherent. He stands there and does proof after proof without explaining any of the methods for solving the problems. He'll ask "is everyone getting this? Hello?!" at least three times per class, but provide almost no guidance if you don't get it. His tests are basically proofs that the book doesn't cover how to do.
Test is not solvable. God suggesting that just avoid... because God can't solve it either
God awful. Smart man, terrible professor. Exam questions are HAND-WRITTEN! More power to you trying to decipher his handwriting. Not to mention his nasty remarks. Avoid at all costs!
Worst professor ever, i can't imagine why Ub ask him to teach Mathematics. When he give us homework he try to change some number so that question will be unique and can't find solution online. His changes just destroyed the whole question and make it unsolvable at all! I thought he never think for the question he try to give to us.
Has a huge ego, not easy to follow
Impossible to follow in lecture. Get ready to teach yourself the class
The fact that Dr. Sageev is still teaching at UB is a sign of the terrible tenure system. Professors like him are allowed to get away with anything. He is by far the worst professor. I am an honors student who has excelled in college only to drop his class. He is arrogant and treats the students like dirt. You won't learn anything in class.
go and find some courses video useless lecture and horrible professor
He does not care about you nor your grade whatsoever. Avoid him at all costs. If your life sucks that bad and you end up with him, I suggest finding youtube vids. He blows. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than actually finding him in his office during HIS OWN OFFICE HOURS. Joke of a professor.
Professor is terrible, lectures make no sense, all full of proofs, and his tests are hard, only good thing is he curves his tests like crazy.
The professor is bitter and likes to confront his students with a trivial things. Learn and do your homework, then you'll get A. The most significant lesson I learned from this class is not be like him and be nice to others around me. In summary, not only will you get a good grade if you study, but also you'll get a valuable life lesson.
Worst professor I've ever had in my life and I really mean it. Throughout my life I've been getting A's in math classes, but when I took his, I think I'm getting C. If you have a question about something don't ask him, he won't help you. Also, don't send him an email, he won't reply. the book is full of equations, he doesn't allow formula sheets.
Worst professor I have ever had. Do not take him under any circumstances, even if he is the only one available. He assigns tons of hw that doesn't count towards your grade! 50% for a final and 50% for three exams make up the grade. I wish he would just get fired, he is that bad and can't teach. Destruction be upon him and the very day he was born.
He likes kids who go to class. He is very very smart so it's hard for him to understand that people are struggling. If you want to do well make sure you know the chapters covered for each test and then go and DO EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM FROM TEXT, EVEN PROOFS. Tests are questions STRAIGHT from the books. Just do better than the kid sitting next to you
Just don't take him lol
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He is a terrible professor. He stands in front of the board writing tons of stuff, with minimal explanation. Homework and attendance are not mandatory, but he claims, if you show up and turn in the homework, that he will curve your grade. Grade is based on 3 midterms and a final.
Sageev is by far the worst professor or teacher that I have ever had in my educational career. The course was ridiculously stressful on its own with a teacher who dismissed students who dont understand the material just by looking at it. Why hes even allowed to teach still is beyond me and UB is making a huge mistake keeping him around.
This man is a terrible professor. I passed his class and had some of the highest grades in the class but he is just awful at teaching and helping students understand his class, just use paul's online math notes to teach you and you'll have a good chance to pass
Sageev is an incredibly smart man, but he makes a very poor teacher. It's obvious that he knows what he is doing on the board, and me and some friends joke that he transcended Calc2, because he goes through the problem seemingly linking unrelated aspects and not explaining. I personally would recommend avoiding him, because unless u speak math GL!
Sageev is the worst professor I have had here at UB. Drop if you have him. He is incredibly difficult. Lectures arw confusing and tests and quizzes are insanely difficult. A lot of self teaching done for this class.
If you have the chance do not take class with this professor. He like many professors take the "teach yourself" method where he expects you to teach yourself. He confuses himself during lectures, makes mistakes then 10 steps later expects us just to know where he went wrong. Does not teach, the averages for his tests stay in the 40s.
Does not hand out syllabus. He just tells you his policy on the first day. Lectures are disjointed; his explanation doesn't match the textbook. Even he don't know what he did wrong when explaining things. Gives out too much hw but doesn't grade them. Grade is determined by 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Sageev is the worst professor you can have at UB. The way he explains topics is old since hes been doing it for 40 years. Which is why his lectures are too confusing. If you do not rely on outside help (YouTube, tutoring, etc), then you are guaranteed to fail his class. This happened to me and I was dropped from mechanical engineering.
Dr Sageev is a horrible professor. First of all he walks into class wearing sunglasses. This is a clear sign that he doesnt know what hes doing. He expect all students to rearrange the chairs before he walks in. If you sit down and do nothing, hell scold you, and possibly even lower your grade just for getting on his bad side. Drop the class asap
Whatever you do, don't take him! He talks to the board and states after every sentence, " Did i make myself clear". Also, he states that what you do for homework is gonna be on your test not classwork! Every class he gives out a lot of homework. If you're gifted in Math you may survive but if you're not you won't. Listen to the reviews its all true
I was only in this this class for three days and I had no other choice but to drop out. He is rude and just simply does not teach. He makes you turn your desk so that he can use the chalkboard and no syllabus and has absolutely no lesson plan. I had no idea where he was going or even what he was trying to teach me. I was left with no choice
Hes literally so confusing. Do not take any of his classes. He doesnt explain anything well at all.
Doesnt know what he does in class. WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! Doesnt explain things!
If you see that you have Gershon Sageev as your professor, immediately drop the class. Don't even take a chance with it. His lectures made zero sense, and I had to learn EVERYTHING outside of class on the internet and in my textbook. His lectures were pointless. I dropped the class and am taking it in the winter session instead. DROP HIS CLASS!!!
Do not take this class. He is the worst professor Ive ever had!
Taking this class is the single biggest mistake I've made in my 20 years on Earth and the single biggest regret. Has a huge attitude, treats students with disrespect, confusing and does not care for your success at all. On the verge of failing out of engineering and Calc 2 is the cause? "Get a tutor", he blatantly said before walking away from me.
Just see for yourself.
altough his tests are somewhat beyond normal, just ask and you will be fine. Giving good feedback to students in his office hour is good point.
If you get stuck with him and cant switch to another professor, just wait until next semester to take it. He makes up questions on the spot that make such little sense that he cant even finish them. Dont except to learn anything in class. If you want to pass youll have to teach yourself outside of lecture.
ive really enjoyed my time at UB and have had some truly excellent professors. professor Sageev is an unfortunate exception to the norm of good professors at this school. He is entirely uninterested in helping; he offers no notes, and when asked for clarification he will snap back with a read the textbook if youre unsure. Terrible guy.
Awful professor! So mean and doesnt like to answer questions. Would write on the board, say nothing about it, and continue to write. Very confusing, had to drop the class because I could not learn from him. do not take classes with him!
He assigns a moderate amount of problems, but does not collect the homework. He isnt the best during his lectures, but pretty nice professor in office hours, explaining what can be in exam. Definitely would take him again
Probably the worst calc teacher on campus
Gerson Sageev was hands down the WORST professor I have ever encountered. Not only was he extremely rude, he barely knows what he's talking about. He gave around 70 problems a week that counted for a super small % of our grade. He faces the board the entire class. Thank god for recitation because without it I would not have passed at all. DON'T.
don't take him, i did great in high school in all math classes then i took calc and got so completely lost. none of his lectures make sense. If you can try not to take his class, however, if you have too, show up to class as attendance matters, i think thats the only reason that i am passing the class but havent gotten my grade back, read textbook
Amazing lecture taught by genius professor. Much homework are given to help you learn the way to apply trig and series concepts in the tests. Gives a good feedback after the test.
Unfortunately I have to take this class and only about a month into school I have zero confidence I will pass. His lectures are basically spoken in gibberish, he faces the board the whole time, his biggest problem is he thinks we all already know what hes talking about from previous math courses weve taken. DONT TAKE THIS IF YOU DONT NEED TO!
Sageevs lectures are nonsense, with students having to correct him on almost every problem. Constantly blocks what hes writing on the board with his body, making it extremely hard to keep up. When he gets too lost, he will go silent for minutes at a time trying to find where he got lost. Frequently starts class early. 0/5 if I could.
Literally the worst professor here. Barely understandable. Get lost so easy and then makes so many mistakes in his lecture. SWITCH OUT ASAP. Thinks we know the material, which we dont. Turns around any questions and turn right back around. Literally the worst.
His lectures are very incomprehensible. Very difficult to follow in class and doesn't do a good job of making sure that everybody understands his lessons.
This man speaks at the board for the entire class. He gets frustrated when we don't understand stuff that he is briefly going over. Recitation for this class is the only reason I passed. He gives hundreds of hw problems every week (no exaggeration) and doesn't let you fully ask a question without him interrupting. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CAN
Awful guy. He literally hates his students. Dont ask questions, he will accuse you of insulting his intelligence. If you sneeze or sip your water bottle he will pause class. Speaks absolute nonsense.
I took this class 4 years ago, and I am still scarred by the experience I had with this professor. Before this class, I LOVED calculus. This class changed that for me. He would just put long proofs on the board and say "this is a fact" and move on, talking to the board. He was incredibly difficult to talk to, and I only passed thanks to youtube.
Don't take Calc 1 with this moron if you value and GPA and scholarship.
He is a genuine professor who gives caring feedback as utmost priority. Although test was the hard part, he points out what we got wrong on the test. Since we have the coronavirus outbreak, the lectures were all cancelled. I have done a lot of calculus and linear algebra back in Korea so it was easy for me.
Sageev is too overqualified to teach UB students. He is better for teaching Math in colleges like Boston University, or MIT. He previously taught a class at MIT. If you are a math major or have high aptitude before, get Sageev. If you a non-major and just want to pass, taking a class with Sageev will ruin your semester.
He is a good teacher but you have to pay attention in lectures, do all homework questions (there will be a lot of them), and ask for help in recitation. The class grade is heavily weighted on tests, but homework and attendance can help boost your grade. Didn't start off the year well because I didn't want to do the work but did fine in the end.
So I got an A in his course, and the ONLY reason is because I took AP calc 4 years ago. He refused to explain concepts that he felt were "trivial" but then would yell at the class for not asking Qs. It's not impossible to do well if you know calc already or are ok completely self teaching, but if you're new to calc do NOT take it with this prof.
Taking this class during covid 19 pandemic. His setup is a camera pointed at the whiteboard. It is constantly unfocused and he stands in front of his writing making it very hard to take notes. I contacted the head of the math department to help set him up with a digital whiteboard and was told he had one and didn't want to use it.
He is an absolutely terrible professor. I had taken every all of the calcs, diff eq, linear algebra, and gotten an A in all of them with the bare minimum effort. This teacher is so terrible at explaining things. His lectures don't match the homework and he assigns way too much homework. Do not take a class with him if you can avoid it.
You have to teach yourself in order to pass this class. He communicates terribly and even his TAs have no idea what is going on. He only does two examples of questions during lectures that dont even make sense with whats going on. You need the book in order to teach yourself if you want to pass.
I only took this class for 2 days and I dropped it and switched professors so fast. He was super unprofessional. He was late to our first class and didn't even give us a syllabus. He didn't set up UBLearns because he said he was "too lazy". He has super sloppy handwriting. He doesn't answer peoples questions. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Showed up late on day 1 of lecture with no mask, syllabus, and UBLearns. Doesn't make or isn't allowed to make his own assignments and tests, so it's all from another professor. He said homework was online, but he didnt give a website nor uses technology. Dropped his class the second I walked out.
Hes not a good professor imo as you have to teach yourself or get help from TAs. I dont think he has office hours either. He goes over very few problems in class. Hes not homework heavy so if you dont like HW and can teach yourself, this class wouldnt be bad. But for most student, I would recommend other professor is options are available.
Took the class many years ago but just had to come back to warn others because that's just how bad he is. Basically just writes proofs on the board and you have to teach yourself. Was told by him a 46/100 I got on a test was well above average, that's insane. Once yelled at a deaf girl to take out hearing aids he thought were headphones. AVOID HIM
I took several courses with Professor Sageev many years ago. He has demanding expectations If you embrace his teaching you will grow beyond your own expectations in mathematics. I am known as the most competent in the arena wherever I go because of his teachings and those of four of his esteemed colleagues. Accept the challenge.
Does not even know where he is or what he is doing. He would forget when class ended, write equations down wrong, and get confused when students would correct him. Went to office hours once and he told me to go home. No UB learns, syllabus given in the third week had the wrong dates, forgot to grade my exam (twice), and can't answer emails.
He considers his job to be to weed you out, NOT teach. He also clearly is one of those who give top priority to research, NOT teaching. Back when I went to SUNY Buffalo, he did't even hold office hours, even though they were supposedly "required." That may have been some time ago, but going through the other reviews, looks like nothing's changed.
No office hours. Really rude guy too. Can't teach to save his life.
