Very nice woman and knows what's she is teaching at Suffolk, no less.
i met some of the most closeminded people in suffolk county in this class. professor postl had foot surgery a month into my sem. so she was not able to write on the board. she is understanding of different opinions but very strict on interpretions
I thought this was a very hard class. I am a good student, and I did not do well at all! She is a very nice woman, but tough grader. She is not too helpful to those who are lost, even if you ask questions and try to do the work.
She is a very tough teacher but funny at times. she doesn't care whether u understand the material.
Nice lady, but hard to understand, That accent is what will fail you.
Tough teacher, very understanding IF you are a good student ONLY. Will make fun of u if you dont get the material, quizes on texts that we didn't even go over. Sarcastic, kinda funny if it isnt towards you, prob. wouldnt take again
Philosophy was not my gig, but she is a great profesor, and had a lot of wit. Liked her, just hated philosophy
No Comments
Loved this Professor! She is tough but rewarding if you do the work. She has total respect for you if you are willing to think, but she isn't easy on the students who don't try to grasp the material. I can't wait to take her class again.
Her class was very boring, and her quizes were hard because I never understood the things she asked us to read. Overall, she's not a good teacher
Don't think this is a professor that will let you skate by her without doing any of the reading. If you ask questions she will always help you, however, if you fall asleep and don't do the reading, you will fail her class.
postl was a very interesting individual. she was very loud and active. i enjoyed her class
She's explains everything until everyone understands it. Its always clear.
i loved her
She was awesome. I still think of her from time to time. She told me I was naive...I love her for it. She is open minded and easy to speak with. I really enjoyed her class and her personality.
i hate her.
She is kind of harsh b/c she will make you feel stupid sometimes, but her rudeness can get funny if you learn to not take her to serious. The tests are all short answer questions, but she does grade rather difficult. I would recommend this class only if you know you will do the readings and be disciplined with the work and attendance b/c then it
I enjoyed her class very much. Occasionally, she'll put you on the spot but as long as you read the texts and do your best she'll give you credit for trying. Another thing, when she does call on you, don't say "I don't know" speak your mind with what you think is the answer. Yet, she does explain things fully so you understand better.
This lady is a huge ****. She does wierd littlethings with her mouth and constantly licks the front of her disgusting set of teeth. She is the kind of person that judges you before you even say a word and will automaticly be a **** to you just because your not a nerd...overall big****
I thought she was great. Her humor is harmless, don't be so sensitive. Philosophy sucks, we all know that but she makes the best of it. Nice professor, and very helpul!!!!
this lady is crazy...i wouldnt ever take her again
dont plagerize on the paper....you'll fail. even if you passed every test. i hate her. and she gives a cumulative, NOT MULTIPLE CHOICE, final with virtually no review. good luck if you take this wretched soul for a professor.
She was horrible... VERY harsh makes people feel really dumb, even if you don't know the answer she tries to dig it out of you. You must read everything she says and understand it to do well. Hard Grader!!
no she is an amazing woman and extremely smart, she just forces you to think. the material isnt that difficult and she makes her quizes upon her notes. only two papers for the semester.
Gertrude Postl is such a wonderful professor. She is fun, interesting, & really knows her stuff-her Austrian accent is fun to listen to. If you want to learn about philosophy, she's it. She is very involved in Women's Studies, an important topic. It's worth looking into what they offer for classes at SCCC. You will work, but you will learn! Great!
she is a very good teacher, she makes things clear and her quizes are easy BUT u have to pay attention and read the text. NEVER use sparknotes, even on text reports, she knows!! she makes the class very interesting and she definately knows her stuff. time goes by fast in the class. pay attention bc she calls on u a lot when ur not paying attention.
My favorite teacher ever
Professor Postl is possibly the best teacher I have ever had. Not only does she explain things in a crystal clear manner but she has a certain way of speaking which makes those who don't understand, and sometimes even those who do understand, look like idiots. I enjoy her somewhat abrasive style.
Whoever complained about her accent is retarded. Ms. Postl is foreign and must think you are attacking her on a topic, very defensive. be prepared for debate 5 books, read, very important. I enjoyed the class very much. Open forum, we discussed everything, hope you get good classmates ;). She can be a bit ruthless at times. Happy sabaticle!
Great class. Postl is a great teacher/philospher. you can tell she is very passionate. She is funny interesting. Very clear and I cannot believe people think she grades hard! sheesh...some of these kids are so friggin stupid!
I'm sorry but this course is terrible. It's basically read the text book and we'll talk about it tomorrow. We never actually learn and whatever she does go over in class is more than likely not gonna be on the test. look in the text book on things we barely talk about and it'll be on the test. about the best help i can give you. gook luck
Irresponsible grader, patronizes students and marks wrong on tests that which is correct but not stated exactly as she would have said it, or contains a misspelling. This is BY FAR THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD and has taken my interest in humanities and RAPED IT into submission. DONT EVER EVER EVER TAKE THIS COURSE. period.
She is a nice women but a hard teacher. She has a very thick accent but after awhile you get used to it. Defiently buy and read the textbook as she will get angry if you dont. Her tests are all fill in so you have to really know what you are talking about.
She's a nice enough professor, but I wouldn't suggest taking her class. I took Imagination and Creativity with her and it was horrible. Only take this class if you have a strong background in philosophy or humanities. She makes you read a ridiculous amount in a very short period. Not much direction was given for papers, so I didn't know what to do.
This isn't a easy class b/c it contains phil, art, hist, and literature. the prof is great, one of the best I've in Suffolk. This is collage so you get what you deserve. two textbooks assigned, three fill in exams, one museum assignment and one paper. if you go to class take good notes and do papers its an easy A. she gives upto 15 points extra credit
I took both ID11&12 at the same time w/ her and loved it. She is a great professor. Take her class if you're a serious student. there are two textbooks assigned and you have 2 read them. three fill in exams with choices. 1 museum assignment and one term paper on given topic. if you go to class, take good notes and do well on papers its an easy A
1st the bad, Prof Postl's papers make you walk a fine line and it's difficult to know with certainty how to give her exactly what she wants; she's a tough grader. However, despite her thick accent, she has exemplary command of the language and is easy to understand; she is extremely understanding helpful and will sometimes give leeway on deadlines
I always get A's and I just took her class last semester. She was awful. It is supposed to be a history class but all she talked about was art. And on the tests they were all ESSAY questions, and she asks for your opinion - but if it doesnt match hers. you get a 0. everyone was failing. She grades so freaking hard, if you leave out 1 thing you get
I took her Honors Phil 101 class. She is absolutely terrific at what she does. Yes, she has an Austrian Accent, but she speaks perfect English, I don't understand what others are whining about. Her class is very organized, and as long as you do the work, you will be fine. After all, you are supposed to be in College so just read the texts .
Terrible At Speaking English. She Rambles ON and ON. She Always Focuses on one thing and then 5 minutes of the other thing she was supposed to go over. Come test time your screwed. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!
You gotta go to class and participate and do assignments. Not hard if you just do what you are suppose to do. The problem is, some people just want to be pampered. This woman is brilliant! Grow the hell up kiddos!!!
I love her! She is an amazing professor. if you participate, read and do your work you will have no problem acing this class.
She expects a lot out of you but it's good motivation and a challenge. Her accent makes her sometimes hard to understand, but also entertaining. She's pretty funny and I think she genuinely wants you to learn and do well, but makes you earn an A.
Pretty Rude and confrontational but brilliant at the same time. She has no social graces and says exactly what she wants.
Professor Postl is the best professor I have ever had. I don't understand why people are complaining. Do the reading, go to class and you will be fine. All essay tests, impossible not to get an A if you actually do the work. She rocks!!
Take this professor and be ready to learn. Her assignments are very easy to do well on: display a basic understanding of the material and, when asked to do so, be prepared to defend your opinion. Her accent is not impossible to work with, and if you are interested in continental philosophy there is probably no one else with her background.
What is the problem? Prof. Postl speaks perfect English! All these kids whining are amazing. Read the material, go to class and you will get an A. Apparently it's too tough to do some work for the people complaining. Prof. Postl is brilliant and sweet lady.
One of the best professors ive ever had. Ide take her again if I had the chance.
Prof. Postl is a great teacher. She makes the material very clear and easy to understand. Plus you get to watch films in this class. She also brought in a former student (now a grad student I think) who taught us a class on Inception and Descartes, it was fun. She is a great Professor. Take her if you can!
She is a good teacher. she will work with you like if something is late she will let you do it. tests are hard so you must do the readings. and she seems alittle harsh on grading your work but overall she is a good teacher.
Why are people complaining? She does have a heavy accent, but you can understand her very clearly. She very helpful, answers all questions and emails. She does get frustrated when nobody participates (can you blame her?). 4 quizzes, 2 papers. She goes over and interprets every reading. Great teacher!
I was warned to not take a class with her but I did anyway- biggest regret. You'll think you understand the text, you write your report on it and then you get a 70. Her accent is not bad contrary to popular belief but her grading is horrendous.
She does have an accent, but you do get used to it. She is not an easy A. DO NOT take her class. She is a very harsh grader and has a lot of attitude when no one answers her questions. The only good part about her class is that we watched clips from movies to better understand the texts. Unless you are going to do the work do not take her class
She's such a nice lady! The class is a bit boring, but she tries to make it interesting. I loved how she compared some philosophical topics to films like The Matrix and Inception. She actually teaches a film philosophy class, but I graduated after this class, so I couldn't take it. She will help you if you need it!
This teacher is the worst I have ever had. I was failing because I don't do well with tests and she was 100% unwilling to help me as a professor pass and do well in her class. When I participated she said my thoughts weren't philosophical enough. Worst professor I have EVER HAD. Almost everyone dropped the class. DO NOT RISK IT.
She speaks with an accent but you get used to it. People think she's hard, but this is college and all she expects is for you do come to class, do the readings she assigns and participate. If you put in the effort, you will do well. She even allows extra credit. She's a very good teacher. ALWAYS willing to help you if you talk to her.
i took IND 102- a dual professor class, way to much material for one class so they provide two professors and the tests are on about a month of material and the readings are very long and confusing. worst part is her accent and shes extremely rude. DO NOT TAKE HER. TRUST ME, DO NOT TAKE HER, ONE OF THE WORST TEACHERS IVE EVER HAD
I do not like Philosophy. Even after this class. If you don't show up to class you probably won't pass. She gives out Quizzes on the readings about once a week on average. I would have had an A if it wasn't for those quizzes. The readings are hard to comprehend. However, she does clarify in the lecture. Nice person. Make sure you participate!
Don't do it!
Unless you're very interested in philosophy and anEXTREMELY hard worker, DO NOT take this class. You need to read every time for class- It's a lot of reading. Not an easy A!
She's an excellent professor who you can learn a lot from if you're willing to do your part. If you came to college to be babied, don't take her. If you're willing to do the reading that's asked of you and actually learn something, she's the one for you. Explores ideas from many different perspectives. Does give reading quizzes.
Philosophy is a difficult subject as it is. She makes it easy to understand and have many class discussions. I suggest reading and taking notes. Participate she helps you understand. She turns something that can be boring into something that makes you think and learn and it's not such a bad class. But GET THE BOOK! YOU USE IS EVERY DAY
DO NOT GO TO THE BATHROOM DURING HER CLASS. She does NOT like it and WILL make that known. Other than that, she's really a wonderful professor. Very knowledgeable, very enthusiastic, she can make the class fun if the students participate. If you're struggling, let her know, be honest with her and she'll be understanding and very helpful.
Absolutely the worst teacher I've ever taken
I took her honors course last spring. She has a thick German accent that's hard to understand at first but you'll get used to it. Really interesting lectures if you're into philosophy like I am but I did notice some people around me falling asleep. She graded us based on two tests, one paper, participation, and 5 response papers (1 page each).
The worst professor I have ever had at suffolk. Very mean and rude lady, she made me feel very bad about myself. If you're not crazy into philosophy she just won't like you, just don't take her you're regret it.
Everyone complained about her grading for her papers and said she was a harsh grader. She is one of those professors you have to show that you care and are interested. She does care. Her part of the exams were tough. Some would say her British? accent is rough. Stay away if you aren't prepared to put in work.
She explained the material enough for me to pass, but you still have to read the huge chunks of text to get anywhere. She gets really sarcastic if no one answers the questions aloud. Her handwriting is illegible, even on graded tests, so I never know what I did wrong. Only ever got Cs on tests, no matter how well explained the questions were. Dont
WORST Professor i ever saw!!! Not recommended to take her class... rude professor and doesn't help!!!
Worst professor and person I've ever met. Never had such a nasty professor like her before. She does not care about her students at all, and doesn't care if you pass or not. DO NOT TAKE HER. You will instantly regret it. Even if you try your hardest, she does not care. And if you ask a question she will make you feel dumb.
She was a really interesting professor. I found her engaging, a bit intimidating, but honestly she really is a great professor. She's extremely intelligent. The thick accent took some getting used to. I definitely didn't do well on the papers, the exams were difficult and she grades harshly. I enjoyed the class, despite the failing grade.
She's so sweet. The work is literally cake, all you do is readings. She'll respect you way more if you did, and give you credit if you participate because not a lot of people do. She doesn't like laziness and if you do the bare minimum and just try you'll easily get an A. I took this as an elective and it was actually cool and thought provoking.
She is very good at what she does; She co-taught with Dr. O'Brien in my class; Has a thick Austrian Accent; OMG please make sure you have a philosophy class background. If you are going from western civ 1, like me, bad idea, you'll be lost until the 2nd test. Oh yeah, 3 tests, 4 papers. One is The MET reaction paper for O'Brien. Papers count more
Great Lectures. Get ready to write. Loved her sense of humor. learned a ton and enjoyed coming to class
Horrible hand writing that you cant understand her notes and please listen when she talking as much as her accent is thick but her part of the test is hard. But personally its funny whenever she teaches because whatever you say to her, she wants to argue.
While she does have a thick accent, she is more than willing to elaborate on her thoughts. She answers questions in a very concise manner and is never vague. She thinks in terms of philosophy and wants to relate that to the now. She only gets better with time!
The worst professor. Literally speaks nonsense there are no PowerPoints or anything to look at just listening to her voice which is already hard to understand. Very tough grader for no reason at all.
Let's sum it up. Postl's accent is not that bad. Her tests are 15 short answer. Q's, pick 10 only. She is humorous, and willing to explain things to you that you dont understand. She gives great feedback on essays. Please make Postl happy and read the damn texts
She was horrible. I wrote a really good essay, spent a lot of Time on it, and she gave me a bad grade. Her tests were very hard, if you didn't memorize everything from the lecture, you basically failed. If you spoke your opinion in class and she didn't agree, she will make you feel stupid. Will never take her again!
Professor Postl is a highly intelligent and respected professor. The class was hard though and required a lot of reading and writing. If this isn't your strength be prepared. She will definitely make you work for it and requires participation from everyone. She can get upset with peoples answers at times. Take her only if your ready to work hard.
One of the worst professors at Suffolk. She has a very heavy accent that makes it extremely difficult to understand sometimes, and her tests are nearly impossible to get above a 50. You must answer 10 short answers every test. She is an extremely harsh grader and if you get one thing wrong it is all wrong.
Great teacher, I had her in fall of 2018 and am writing this now. Things I will say: she knows who did the reading and who didn't.... , she WILL pick on you for questions if you are unprepared/uninterested and you need to go to class! GO TO CLASS! She is pretty smart person, you can learn a thing or two about life/yourself by listening to her speak
Took this class in Fall 2019. Postl and O'Brien really run the class well. Their test questions come directly from the notes that they write on the board before class. Take time to study the lectures, find something interesting and write a good essay. Go to the writing center. Email Postl what you're thinking of writing. Postl is a good person
Professor Postl responds to questions/concerns. Majority of class is participation on blackboard (took this class online), 3 papers, and 2 tests. Do the weekly assignment, study from lecture and you'll do fine. Highly recommend
Very hard to understand and a tough grader on papers. She had good moments but overall not the best.
Professor Postl has a strong Austrian accent, does not mean she is hard to understand, just have to adapt. She is really a sweetheart, she means well. If you don't pay attention you will get roasted by her. So pay attention. She is extremely funny. You don't have to read just pay attention clear grader, easy class, she makes it easy 3 essays 2 test
Discussions every week: normally just a question regarding textbook reading. Fairly straightforward but you do have to understand the concept. 3 reaction papers. You choose which prompt you want to answer with about 400 words. And 2 exams. A midterm and final. Therefore the grades for these assignments matter! and they're doable. not terrible.
Can be very rude at times, gets mad when you go on your phone even for a second, and gets very mad if you have to get up to go to the bathroom. Gets upset when you answer a question wrong, and will refuse to answer it as she "does not want to repeat herself." Does not do reviews for the tests. Would not recommend
I'm 7 years too late on this rating. Postl gets a poor grade in my book simply because of her bathroom policy & how she treats students around that (and in general). It's straight up abusive & degrading the way she demands that no one go to the bathroom during her class, she straight up yelled at students about this. Abhorrent.
