He is the best organic teacher anybody can have. He teaches wiht joy and care....I love the calss and I am going to miss it alot. One of few classes that I enjoyed during past 4 years. Thank you Dr. G
Dr G has proven that he is one of the people who do not just teach what their heart desires, but also care for the students what Organic Chem can do to them.It has been the most pleasant environment I had in the last couple of years while in his class, and
Keep on rocking with the Parkinson's Patch!

Best teacher I have ever had!!!
Simply the best!
Dr. G. is wonderful. He really cares for the students and is willing to help whenever!
One cannot say enough good things about this guy. Explains everything with great clarity, and really prepares you for the ACS final. My greatest chemistry experience at VCU was this class. (USE HANDOUTS!) Good luck with the Patch Dr. G!
Great teacher, wonderful attitude with his students, really cares and wants everyone to succeed. GREAT JOB DR> G.
Good class. Quizzes are hard...but everything is easy. Make sure you go back and re-learn a lot of the material. Sometimes you need to know the stuff in more detail for the ACS and other standardized tests.
Great teacher, very helpful, very thourough, tries really hard to explain organic in a way anyone can understand. Teaches obviously because he loves teaching and he is awesome at it. Definitly get him.
Dr. G. is by far the best teacher I have ever had. Anyone would be lucky to have him for orgo. Good luck if you don't get him, you'll need it.
He is the greatest professor I have ever had. I really really glad that I took orgo with him. He also wrote me a best recommendation letter for my dental school. I really appreciated his effort to explain and to try to answer every single question that all students have. BEST ORGO TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!
THE best ochem lab teacher you can have. He has an accent that takes time getting used to but once you understand the class is so fun & easy. Highly recommend having him as a professor, he's funny, he makes lab simple, and makes himself available on/off campus in person or through e-mails.
Dr. G is by far the best orgo professor ever! He is always willing to help his students and he explains concepts so that we understand. I am so glad that I had him as a professor. This is the man you want if you have to take any orgo lab!
i really have no comment on this guy... DAMN HE'S GOOD!!
His class in 1 word: easy. He tells you everything you have to know for each of his 3 exams. He posts everything on blackboard. He doesn't waste your time with pointless details. He's funny as hell and is more then willing to help you. Go out of your way to get this guy if you want an A in chem lab.
Dr. G is amazing! If you really arent interested in Organic Chemistry but have to take it, take it from him. Not only will you get a good grade but you will have fun along the way
Dr. G is hilarious, he keeps you laughing and that's hard in Orgo!
if you want to learn organic chem. and have fun doing it...take Dr. G. Be careful, he is a prankster! Probably one of the few professors that will lie to you to get you to learn and still get to laugh from his students.(examples: last slide, fake quizzes, ebay) Gotta Love him!
VCU is so lucky to have him. He's pretty cool and extremely impressive.
Dr. G is the man. His tests are just as easy as his quizzes and he keeps the material entertaining. Definitely the guy to take orgo chem from. Down with Baker, up with Dr. G.
I got a D, but it was my fault for not putting more time into the class. I'm sure I'll be able to handle it the next time around. Dr. G was very patient and humorous, and I still learned a lot even though I didn't do well. Highly recommended.
A spoon full of sugar helps the chemistry go down! Dr. G, with his sense of humor, constant encouragement, Pink Notes, and handouts, kept us going throughout the entire DEMANDING course. If you keep up wth him from day one and don't get behind, you'll be just fine. He should teach more courses here. I highly recommend him.
i ****ING love this guy, hes amazing. take him. seriously, first day of class, and im rating him. i want his babbies. hes hilarious, awesome, funny as hell, and SOOO COOL!!! and hes AWESOME, take him !! >_< AND the rumors are true!! hes awesome, maybe orgo will suck, but labs gonna be aweesssommmeee. i love him...take him. kk, im done
I LOVE HIM.. AWESOME TEACHER!
THIS MAN IS AN ORGANIC BEAST!!! I never thought I would actually enjoy this subject as much. Every proffessor(ESPECIALLY BAKER) should sit down and watch this man inspire. This is as close to private tutoring as you will get. We should name a dorm after him!
He's the cutest little man!!! He makes organic really interesting (hard to believe!) and very clear. I wish I had him for lecture!!!!
Dr. G is the best professor at VCU. You have to work hard, but it pays off because he gives you all the tools. Know his pink sheets and the rest is cake. His tests are exactly what he says and he totally prepares you for the ACS test. I got an A in this class after I got a D in Bakers crap class.
Recommend for lab. Better than Moses. Actaully teaches Organic Chem based on labs rather than going over procedural information. All assignments and quizzes are fair, but tests are sorta tricky. He will tell you exactly what to study for tests. His TA's Keith and Rinnie are excellent. Best of all, doesnt give lots of work like Moses.
Dr G is an excellent professor. I have not met any instructor as easy as Dr G. Trust my words. he will tell you exactly what you need to know for quiz or test. if you do your part, you will get a good grade. that the bottom line with him. so fellas, take Dr G`s class, you will learn and get good grade in Chem 302 as well.
Dr.G is the best teacher I have met. I love his unique teaching style. He makes orgo easy and fun. If you want to go to medical, dental or pharmacy school, take his class. He will help you get ready for MCAT, DAT, and PCAT. I got an A in Chem 302 and 92 percentile score on the PCAT. Thanks to my hardworking professor.I love Dr.G and his class.
Dr. G is absolutley the ideal professor! He will always work with you until you get this subject. He knows his stuff inside out and he will make sure you understand and do well in his class. THere should definitely be more professors like him---especially at VCU!
HE is an amazing professor and person. He will help anyone that needs it. I had him for both 301&302 lab and for 302 lecture. I would never take orgo with out him. I had Baker for 301... Big mistake, but DrG makes up for where Baker slacked in 301. I would love to take 302 again just to have him as a professor. I just wish he taught PCHEM:)
great professor, he makes a hard subject simple. he only teaches at night (7pm) but its once a week and worth the time. gave me my 1st A on an exam in an upper level class. hardworking teacher, you do your part and he does his. SI helps too! very funny and keeps you awake in his class. if you have to take orgo TAKE HIM no exceptions!
One of the best professors I ever had. He made getting through this painful subject fun.

He is BEST EVER!!
Greatest professor ever! the only reason ppl might think his class is easy is because he actually teaches the material. You understand exactly what he's teaching. He's notes are great, the ACS suggested problems he hand picks for each chapter help you even more. He tells you what you need to know on his exams as well as quizes. Highly recommend!!!
Don't take orgo with any other professor. Dr. G is fantastic - words can do no justice. I didn't used to like orgo but now I'm considering a career in the field.
hands down, best orgo prof out there; gets you ready for any -CAT you have to take (mcat, pcat, etc) read notes for clarity, requires studying but makes this subj bareable and even sometimes fun to learn. very inspiring and helps students learn how orgo can be aplied to the REAL WORLD, which most prof lack this ability
Awesome. Orgo is now one of my favorite subjects. He always teaches the evening classes and labs so try to sign up for those!
He is for students. at least i know that. He is always ready to help and stays up late to reply students email. one of the best orgo prof i have ever seen. if it was not for him, i would never learn orgo. today i am confident coz of his teaching..awesome man and generous fellar, i loved him and respect him for his dedication to teaching orgo..
This man is amazing! I would never take organic with another professor. I felt extremely unprepared from 301 with Sahli, but Dr. G was always willingly to answer any questions. He is as close to a personal tutor as you can get!! BEST teacher at VCU!
Absolutely amazing. He doesn't hand out easy grades, but he makes the class interesting and give you every possible chance to succeed.
He is by far the best organic chemistry professor!!! If you take his class you will not only do well, if do the work, but you have learned!!! So you will be able to will on your DATs, MCATs, PCATs or whatever.
1. He thinks he's GREAT, however not the case at al1 2. He is NOT Easy,3. He is organized yes, but not easy.4. Nice teacher but not a GOOD Teacher.5. Big Accent, need a translator.6. Tests are hard, (he says he tricks you and then laughs about it, in a nice way of course) 7.No Curve at all, as Baker curves huge and other teachers do, but G will not!
He doesn't curve. Says he wants you all to be doctors/dentists etc., and pretends like everyone in his class is doing well by saying that the averages are low because students purposely fail his test (this is why he feels there should be no curve). He wouldn't even bump up my letter grade when I was borderline. Goodbye Medschool thanks to Dr.G.
wow you too?? I know, forget being a doctor now, I got a C, Barely and I've heard Med School won't even take a B in Orgo I, so thanks to G, I won't be able to be a doctor now :( He's a funny and nice guy, but not the best teacher as he seems to think... and a few others I guess, I know I won't be taking 302 with him, I learned nothing bc of him !
guys he wasn't that bad,,.... he is so cool and so funny, and such a nice guy, but as far as grades go,... I didn't like him, it just seemed only a few ppl got A's and the rest either C or D, i tried really hard and i got an A on first Exam, and failed rest,& I ended with an F overall I LOVE dr. G but I hate his tests and I despise his quizzess..
Great guy. Sweet, helpful, funny. Ridiculously hard though. I don't know who on earth said this guy was easy but there must've been a lot of crack involved. I still think he's great but you may as well flush your GPA down the toilet.
FUNNY GUY, UNLESS THIS IS THE ONLY CLASS YOURE TAKING, I WOULDNT TAKE WITH DR.G, THOUGH HE IS COOL, FUNNY, HE DOES NOT CURVE EVEN 1/2 A POINT!!! IF YOU WANT A FUN TEACHER AND FUN CLASS TAKE HIM, IF YOU WANT TO KEEP A GOOD GPA, DO NOT TAKE HIM, HIS PINK NOTES MAY HELP BUT HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO MAKE YOUR OWN PINK NOTES USING THE BOOK FOR REFERENCE?!!
I had him for Orgo 301 in Fall 06, okay: It goes Like this: he is great teacher, but I don't think his class (EXAmS & QUIZZES) were neither fair nor helpful.Tests just 40 Mult. CHoice questions and they were very confusing! If you study hard you WILL learn &only get a C or B, just < 5 people got A's in my class,Take ZHou.. SuPER EASY & Sexy AsiaN @
I Dont know who in their right mind things G is a 'good professor'only good think about him is that he has those pink notes:organizes everything and make it seem like smaller info, but it's organic, you determine your own grade based upon how much studyin & effort YOU put in! So 4 that reason, I would take another guy since G's test are ridiculous!
WHY DID I SIGN UP W. HIM? WHOEVER HAD HIM BEFORE FALL 07 HE MUST OF BEEN DIFFERENT,IN FALL 07 SEMESTER, HE TURNED INTO A VERY VERY DIFFICULT PROFESSOR,DID OFFER HELP SESSIONS-THOUGH THEY DID NOT 'HELP' ANYONE,5 % GOT A'S,10% B'S, 15% C'S, 40% D'S, THEN 30% FAILED THE COURSE! WHY OH WHY DID I SIGN WITH HIM? I CAN 4GET BEING A DOCTOR NOW!! THANKS 2 G
The only way to go in Organic at VCU. Clear at explaining if you understand the accent. The most hardworking teacher at VCU. Keeps you entertained for 3 hours while still teaching at the highest level. Just use his notes. Do ALL THE PROBLEMS. A LOT OF TIMES. Study and you will get a B. Study hard until you are dreaming orgo and you will get an A.
Dr. Minaskanian is too harsh. He pretends to treat you like your smart and talks about how he wants us all to be doctors and pharmacists when he doesn't even curve by less than a point and ruins your chances of a good future. It's like a slap in the face after everything he has said to you and then he purposely doesn't help his students.
Dr.G rocks my socks off! Hard CLASS because it's organic you have to do the book work and study if you want an A or B. Not everyone gets into med-school and this is the class that you find that out.
only guy to take for orgo
Dr. G is a good professor, he gives a review before each quiz and allows time for people to ask questions. If you do your homework and study the notes, you will do well. Seriously, if you can't do well with Dr. G, then being a doctor wasn't in the cards for you.
Great professor
Okay, it seems like only people who rated him are those few who made good grades. Which is about 10-15 out of 300. He's all about helping those who r doing well in the class, if you're not doing well, he'll make fun of u behind ur back. He is not EASY! Also, he has way too much of pride in himself! If u want a good grade, don't take him!
I am an adult student who was moving in from out of state when Org II was just starting. Dr. G did his best to ensure that I would not fall behind. I received all A's in my Org lectures and labs because I did the problems and asked for help, but Dr. G is a great teacher who made learning fun (he's a funny guy), and helps those who help themselves.
I had him for 301, but then for 302 he changed completely. I, along with 50+ had to withdraw out of the class. Before he might've been a good teacher, but now, he's just ridiculous! My friends, had taken Sahli and told me that it was the 'best thing they ever did', and now, I feel the same way, only with a 'W' on my transcript! Thanks to G!
Best of the bests.!!
Whoever says that Dr. G is not a good teacher is crazy.... which seems to be all the people who don't want to put time and effort into the class. I have to admit I am failing the class right now but its only the beginning of the semester. If you want a teacher with passion this is your guy! I look forward to going to this class every time!
I love this professor. I wish I had been able to get him for lecture as well as lab. I sure he is more fond of helping students who want help other that slackers who ask after tests for help. He makes class fun. If he comes off as "full of himself" as someone said then maybe its because he is brilliant!!!
He is a great teacher, but his exams and quizzes are difficult. An A is hard earnt, and very few people get them. Organic is a hard subject but he is not a bad teacher to take it with. If you put in time and effort, you can do well in the class.
Great professor whom I learned so much from. His exams and quizes are tricky but if you study what he tells you to study, there is no excuse not to get a B in the class. Orgo is more demanding than hard so be prepared to spend a lot of time studying no matter what professor you choose.
Dr.G is very helpful and passionate about his work. His test and quiz are tricky but that just means you have to try harder. There are 5 tests which can be replace with online homework+clicker and 3 tests which can be replace by the final! study hard!! He's great!!!
Chem 302 with Dr. G was hell. To get an A for the class he suggeste that you study 3 hours a day. I barely past the class and I studied hard. His tests were very tricky.
Ok. Honestly, DGR is a great professor. No, his class is not easy. Organic chemistry is a tough subject anyway and DRG does not make it any easier, but if you work hard you will learn so much in his class. I had him in 301 and 302 and I got an A in both classes. They key is to make your own notes and study everyday. He gives out a set of notes ever
DR. G is just an amazing professors at VCU. He life stories are so interesting and will definately keep you interested. You have to do all the problems in the book and ACS, then you will be ready for his tests. You have to pay attention to little tiny details, and I suggest you creat your own notes on each chapter. If u want to get a good GRADE !!
This class is impossible because Dr. G doeSN't curve grades! I got a C- so I will have to repeat it, and I did study everyday! Over half the class fails every test and quiz, and he thinks they fail on purpose to challenge him. He is a cool guy with lots of funny stories, but he is arrogant and merciless with grades. DON'T TAKE HIM IF UR PRE-MED!
Spends too much time talking about his life story and giving pep-talks. Study as much as you possibly can study, and remember that O-chem is designed to weed out the people who aren't serious about med school. You have to be in class for quizzes and clickers, so take copious notes. And study, study, study!
he holds like 3 hour study sessions conviently the day before the exams and quizzes.he answers his emails on time and he gives you plenty of practice problems that are just like whats going to be on the test.... ur given everything you need to really LEARN organic.. the key is reading the book.. he IS THE BEST. had him 301 and 302
Let's get one thing straight, This class is tough, not because Dr. G is a hard test giver, quite the opposite, he is an easy test giver, but YOU NEED TO STUDY. His notes are the best in the department, because he doesn't spoon feed it to by giving you a powerpoint, you gotta show, he will give you a set of skelton notes and you just fill 'em out!
I love Dr. G! He is really funny and the notes that he passes out are really helpful. While the course material is tough, it's not impossible to do well.
Dr. G is a brilliant professor you can't find a better or more helpful professor than Dr.G. I highly recommend him to any student seeking a greater knowledge and understanding of organic chemistry. He is always ready to help, he holds study session and responds to e-mail very fast.
I don't know what any of these people are talking about! I am a straight A student and I barely passed this class. His tests are impossible, he tricks you, and most of the class fails them, and HE DOESN'T CURVE! He wouldn't even round my grade up. This class will make your transcipt look terrible if you're pre-med, so beware!!!
You have to read the book and do the homework problems to get good grade in this class. Don't expect an easy ride!! It's orgo, you have to do the work. Don't blame the teacher for your bad grade. Dr. G is wonderful, always there to help his students. Response to email very quick, He always help me with the ace hw too... Thanks so much DR. G :)
This class is tough, but if you study and read the book you will be fine. Make sure you are clear on all topics , and if not get a study partner or ask Dr. G he will be glad to help if all this is done you can Pass with a A or B.
He's the best professor I've ever had. Not going to lie, these classes are hard, but the material was presented very well. Don't read the book, just DO ALL THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS and you'll be fine. With his kind of dedication and clarity, you could only get a bad grade from laziness. 302 is also easier than 301. :)
I hated chemistry before, but really enjoyed his class. Tests and quizzes are exactly like the practice problems, but it's all conceptual, so you really have to understand it to do well. Study a lot and know details. He's fantastic and entertaining and thorough. You really do learn! Take it with him only if you're willing to work hard. Awesome guy.
Do you want to rock the MCAT or DAT? Then you need to learn organic chem from Dr. G. He is the best that VCU and the chem dept have to offer. The man is genuine, sincere, and cares about his students. You have to put the time and effort into learning. His exams/quizzes require you to think! It is a good thing, trust me.
Good attitude, but harder than other VCU profs. Will prepare you for MCAT for sure, but you risk a B in orgo in the process. Do not take this class with other difficult ones as it requires a significant and steady weekly time investment.
One of the best teachers I have had yet at VCU. Dr G really knows what he is talking about and truly cares about his students. I highly recommend going to his office hours, it really helped me get an A, which is totally possible to get in his class even though organic chemistry might seem really terrifying at first, but its not with dr g!
One of the best professors I've had at VCU. Very helpful, but definitely have to put in a lot of effort and learn on your own. Very organized. Easy for orgo II if you had him for Orgo I, and prepares you well for other professors Orgo II class if you change. But some A students do get B's. He's not an easy professor. Do the suggested problems!
Organic is difficult. But Dr G tries his best to make you understand it. His notes are awesome, never get rid of them. He gives you practice problems in the text and for the ACS, online homework, and old tests. It's a hard class, but I wouldn't have taken it with anyone else.
I love Dr G! He is readily available with study sessions and office hours, but he expects you to put the work in too. If you understand(and actually DO) the assigned problems you'll be fine.
He is THE best professor i have ever taken a class with, he tries his best. It is not an easy class, but if you do the assigned problems and go to his review sessions it will become relatively simple class, love Dr. G
Interesting...being a good teacher has nothing to do with how nice a teacher is, but how well he prepares his students to succeed; and by the looks, not sure if this is a class I want to take with him if more than 40% are failing his course. Baker is a great teacher! While he curves, he does not CURVE for A's, just to clarify the misconception.
Dr. G is by far one of the best proffesors I ve had. He makes everything easy to understand and gives more help with online handouts. He tries to keep the class entertain so we dont fall asleep and his exams say exactly what he said they were going to include. Paying attention is a must but if u do, you ll get an A or B+
Hey guys, I had Dr.G for both orgo is not easy to get A's in his class but it is not also b/c of him, definatly organic chemisry is hard subject to deal with at first because of its new concepts which never been thought in high school. My advice is,he is the best again the best prof. @ VCU currently, best for PCAT/ MCAT.study 20+ hr. to secure an A
What is with all the kids here thinking they can be doctors when they cannot handle a simple bit of organic chemistry? This is a class and doctors work with lives? "Take another class, Dr. G is hard"? You shouldn't be in med school if you think like that. Dr. G is a great teacher of an awesome subject.
What is this person below talking about. News flash, everyone taking organic chem is not trying to be a doctor. As for you,you should realize that their is more to medicine than straight A's; and focus your comments on you instead others. I have seen alot of you guys that think you know everything not get accepted into medical from pure arrogance.
Dr. G is the best professor you can have for Orgo!
He is simply awesome. I never knew that Organic Chemistry can be taught in such an interesting manner!
This professor is one of the worst professor I ever had. I think that he is a good teacher for talented student but not for normal student. I really do not pick up much stuff from the way he taught.
He teaches well. Most people learn a lot from him, just because the people study their butt off by themselves to just understand what he went over once a week. a lot of work. If you want to become a doctor genuinely, you need to take him. Doable, but you need to work hard all the time. could've gotten A, but i got little arrogant and gotB.
This class is the devil but Dr. G makes it as bearable and as entertaining as it can be. The material isn't that difficult, but the quantity is overwhelming a lot of the time so you MUST stay on top of it. Falling behind isn't an option. Prepare to spend many hours outside of class studying. Also, his curves are enormously helpful.
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT CLASS. Dr G is the best teacher to teach organic chemistry but his tests/quizzes are super difficult. Get ahead studying class material or else you'll understand the material but still fail the tests :(
He's just good at teaching. He repeats the base concepts a lot so that you retain them. His quizzes and tests require a few hours of studying. You will really have to earn your A in this class, but it isn't impossible. He curves quizzes and exams and drops one each. You will know orgo when you finish.
Dr.G is the best teacher you will ever have for orgo, he prepares you for the entering exams as well. you have to work for your grade but it is easy to get an A just by reading through the notes and working the suggested problems
I love him. He is the best teacher I ever have at VCU. He';s crystal clear for class materials. It is easy to get an A by doing all suggested hw and pb he assigned. No surprise things on the exam. It is orgo so of course you need to study for that( I spent around 15-20 hours to study orgo per week) and get an A so far. Take himmmmm if you can.
Dr. G is AWESOME! all you have to do is come to class, listen, and DO THE SUGGESTED PROBLEMS. he gives you handouts in class so you can follow what's he's talking about. go to his office hours; he WANTS to help you. don't pass the opportunity to have Dr. G for Orgo. Dr. G makes this class bearable.
Dr. G is the best. Take him if you can and you will never regret about it. Do not listen to all the rumors that DRG hard. He is extremely nice and helpful. He curves a lots on quizzes and exams. So Take him and it will eb your best class in VCU.
Dr. G is a BOSS! He is hilarious, loves joking w/ people, makes class fun & interesting. He has lots of fun & silly analogies/stories about orgo, and they are very helpful. He makes the 3 hours go by fast. Curves a lot, wants to help you during office hours, quizzes/exams exactly like ACS, Wade, & practice exams. Do whatever it takes to take Dr. G!
For Orgo, Only take DR.G. He is the best of the best. He curves a lots so its easy to get an A in his class. Take him if you can.
Even though he curves a lot on his exam, but his quizzes and tests are unbelievably hard. His quizzes are like tests to other professors, and he only gives you 30 to 45 for each quizzes. His MC and free response are so hard you practically won't get it right. He curves because his quizzes and tests are harder (10x harder compare to Baker and Ruder)
Please guys, if you want unbelievably hard quizzes and tests then go ahead and take Dr. G. Just imagine you get a D on his quizzes and tests he will curve it up to a C. But like a say before his quizzes and tests are 10X harder compared to baker and ruder. Take ruder, she is more reasonable on the level of difficulty on her quizzes and tests.
Dr. G is the absolute BEST. He makes sure you understand each concept in Organic Chemistry and shows cool shortcuts to make it easier to understand. On the downside his quizes are hard, but he pulls relevant question from those and puts them on his exams. The reason why I didn't get an A was because I didn't go to every class.
10x harder compare to Baker and Ruder???? it's ridiculous for whom said that. For me, DRG quizzes and tests are really fair and reasonable( no surprise things). He even gave you a practice quizzes and testes which very relevant to the real quizzes and tests. He curves every single quizzes and tests even final exams. So it is very likely to get an A
Dr.G is the best professor I've ever had my whole life. He is really helpful and he makes orgo SO SIMPLE that you can get the highest grades in the entering exams without reading the book. Dr. G, you are THE BEST!!!!!!
Best organic chemistry teacher! His exams are straight forward and his lectures are very well organized! He's really funny too.
Dr.G will make you understand. It is difficult, much more than Ruder, but you actually learn things from Dr.G. None of it is busy work and he coaches and encourages you every step of the way. Plan to find a study buddy and spend more time in the library.
If you want to LEARN, go for Dr.G. It is a hard class; however, if you study at least 3 hours day, you will be fine. If you are really concerned with getting straight A's, don't take him, unless you know you're not going to be lazy. o and he makes the class really fun and interesting, even if it is 3 hour long class.
Dr. G is hilarious! His tests and quizzes are extremely difficult, but I am going to put this simply for you...if you are continuing your education after your undergraduate degree, then it'd be best to take him. Otherwise, STAY AWAY! The other teachers are easier (so I've heard)
Dr. G is the BEST professor for organic chemistry. He is soo funny and is an orgo GENIUS! he makes orgo so easy to understand. His quizes and exams are a lot harder compared to other professors though. I managed to pull off an A but that was with studying orgo 15+/week. Do not recommend if you don't have the time. His class is NOT an easy A.
THE BEST
I had Dr.G for lab and it is not bad. Make sure you do well on both the lab reports and keep up with your notebook weekly. His labs exams do require studying for in order to get a good grade
Best prof. if u really want to learn Orgo. Exams are more challenging (as i hear) than Ruder and Baker. But I assure come finals you will be prepared. I started off bad but pulled through to get a B. My friend devoted a reasonable amount time to his studies got an A in the class before finals. Dr.G sure does his job, u just need to do yours
Dr. G is an amazing professor. However, this class will be a full time job! His questions are much harder than what is in the book. Basically, if you want to know the ins and outs of orgo and plan to go to med school then take him!
Too much work for two credits! The prep for each lab is time consuming, plus two lab reports, three tests (one is open book), and a quiz every two or three weeks. From what I hear, other lab teachers do not have as many quizzes. If you are looking for an easy A with minimal effort this is not the professor for you.
It may be hard to follow along during class unless you study beforehand, otherwise you'll want to find a devoted studygroup. It is entirely possible to get an A if you don't underestimate his first few exams/quizzes. You would do well by just attending his TAs' sessions and studying problems he suggests.
Disagree with the review below. The work for Dr.G's lab is the one with LESS compared to others. It's nothing to even flinch at. There is literally no effort involved until his lab exams, which if you are a wiz at chem, will have even less trouble with. Overall you just need to do your labs delicately and pay close attention and you'll ace!
Dr. G is THE MAN! I had baker and had to drop. Baker does not explain things like Dr. G. G gives you handouts for each chapter, tells you what you need to know and gives shortcuts so you'll always remember. He's hilarious! The energy in his class is just better. His tests/quizzes aren't bad you have to read the book and do examples. You'll LEARN!
350 characters is not enough to rate Dr. G. Take him for 301, do your best and learn his style. Then for 302 you will know how to get an A. You MUST devote time to reading the book thoroughly!! That's the key as well as the study problems. I'm so excited for 302. He is a gift from God. Makes my tuition worth it. He's funny too so the 3 hours fly.
Dr G is very nice and has passion on what he is teaching. He always tries his best to explain for students. However, I found that I am under stressful in his class, because his clicker questions come right after the last word without practicing the problems first. His tests are hard, read the book and do practice problems are not enough.
Dr. G is the best teacher I have had at VCU. I was not excited about a three hour night class- but he makes the time go by! He is hard. and comparing his test to other teachers it is way harder. however, you will know orgo better than anyone after taking him especially important if taking mcat/dat. he is a wonderful teacher but be prepared to study
Organic 2 is extremely time consuming, but if you are a pre-health person you want to take Dr. G. He prepares you for your standardized exam. He is definitely one of the coolest guys at vcu.
Dr. G is the BEST!I wish he could teach all of my classes. Because of him I started liking VCU. He knows how to make his students work. He CARES about his students unlike other VCU profs. Never think you can get an easy A. He's class is hard and it'll probably be the hardest A you will earn. I never missed a class. Very interesting course!!!
he likes to point on powerpoint slides with his laser pointer... literally this is him " watch... look ... look.. there ya go! thats all you'll hear from him! nothing else! nice man but ugh!!! i need explanations.
Dr. G is a great teacher. He has awesome TAs who hold review sessions outside of class and are also always willing to explain things to you. Dr. G. always posts practice quizzes and exams about a week in advance. If you study, do the homework, and do the practice quiz/exam you should be fine. He is a difficult teacher, but he curves everything.
Dr. G is the best if you plan on taking the DAT or MCAT. He ensures you know the material, though you WILL have to work hard at it. He is very motivational and cares about each and every student and is always willing to help. you MUST do textbook and ACS problems often to get prepared for his exams. Not and easy A but worth it.
Dr. G is an amazing teacher. I remember the first day I heard his accent I was like I am not going to like this class, but I ended up liking both his accent and orgo. Though its a 3 hour long class time flew by. He is a really good teacher just make sure you pay attention in class, take notes and do all the worked assigned to you prior to exams.
Honestly, I wasn't excited for this course but Dr. G is amaaazing. I learned so much! He's intelligent, an excellent professor and his jokes during lecture time help make the long time light (7-940pm). I got a B in the first part and I'm taking him for 302. Seriously, he's the best- the other professors are mediocre.
Exams and quizzes are pretty difficult but ensure that you KNOW the material, which especially helps if you're applying for graduate school for chemistry/professional school (dental, medical, pharmacy) where you have to take admissions exams. Overall awesome!
A lot of people like him. I didn't think he was a good professor. All I heard in lecture was, "and this goes here and this goes there, and boom, this happens, and bam, you get this". I prefer to be actually told what is happening and not have Emeril of Organic teach me.
Okay... so Orgo is not the easiest class, and this especially goes for Dr. G - HOWEVER he is worth it! He doesn't just teach you how to do well on his tests but actually helps prepare you for the future, making sure you actually learn. His tests and quizzes are difficult, but he gives ample opportunity to practice exactly what you need.
He's awesome
Dr. G is by far the most amazing professor I've had. I was so scared for orgo and now I love it. You really have to put in a lot of effort and you will make the A. His TA's are incredible and so helpful and he's the most encouraging man on the planet. I love Dr. G and would take him for every class if I could. Great man!
I had Dr. G for both organic chemistry 1 and 2. Everyone knows organic chemistry is tough before you even sign up for the course, but Dr. G makes the class more enjoyable and understandable. I always suggest him for anyone looking at taking any graduate school entrance exams because you will actually know the material very well.
Dr. G was a great teacher to have. I had him for 301, 302 and lab both semesters. He tries to explain things in ways people can easily understand and remember. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. Tests and quizzes are curved but still difficult if you don't study. Easily the best teacher I've had at VCU.
You will have to go to a good SI session every week before examsquizzes. Make sure you do the recommended textbook problems before each quiz and exam too. You won't have to read the textbook for this class, he gives handouts which are easy to understand. Clickers are stressful only if you don't find a good spot in class with smart neighbors.
Dr. G is a great professor. His lectures are easy to follow. He's funny and very inspirational. His class has been my favorite class ever. Its not an easy class but its not impossible. As long as you do the work that he expects you to do then you can get the grade you want. Attendance isn't mandatory but he will know who comes to class (clickers).
He is bae! 3 I took him because everyone told me to and his class was the easiest class ever and he is funny. Makes all the hard complicated concepts super easy because he knows organic chemistry better than anyone in the world.
Dr. G has good intentions, and does assign problems that are relevant to the MCAT and DAT. However, he does not explain the problems very well. He says that you don't need to know basic chem to do well. I beg to differ, please know basic chem and study from the orgo ACS book before taking this class. Go to all the SI sessions.
Orgo is a dense and difficult class, but Dr. G knows what he's about. It takes a lot of work to do well in this class, but I think that's unavoidable. Dr. G wants his students to succeed, he curves tests dramatically because he knows there's a ton of information and doesn't want to push people away before they've had a chance to hit their stride.
I LOVE Dr. G! Literally the most inspirational, understanding, and caring professor I have had. Don't get me wrong, organic chem is a beast, but Dr. G makes all of it so worth it. He gives you EVERYTHING needed to succeed. Attend a study session, read the book (and then read it again) and you'll be solid! You won't regret taking orgo with Dr. G!!
If you think that everyone takes Dr. G b/c he's easy, you'll be disappointed. He expects you to do more practice and his tests are harder than any other professor. The class will be the bittersweet time of your college life. Torturing and challenging but you'll love what you learn. Do all the practice he assigns and you will get an A for sure ;)
Honestly, do yourself a favor and avoid Dr. G if possible. He comes across as wanting to be on your side and wanting to help you, but its all a show. I'm finishing orgo 2, and also had Dr. G for orgo 1. He is very sneaky on tests/quizzes and throws in information that he knows will throw you off. Going to have to retake 302 because of him/his class
Dr. G is probably the hardest orgo professor out there right now. It's a very time consuming class--if you can't put in 8 hours a week I don't recommend taking him. His accent is a little hard to understand at first, but he is an excellent professor with great stories. As long as you have time to do the practice problems he assigns you will be ok.
Dr. G is amazing! 5 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 final. Go to class, read the textbook, do the textbook and acs problems for each chapter, and the practice quizzes and tests and you'll do fine, Highly recommend SI sessions as well. There are Sapling and clicker grades as well. This class is hard, but use your resources, put in time, and you'll do well.
I did not do well in Organic Chemistry, but it had absolutely nothing to do with Dr. G. He is an amazing professor and a very warm and funny man. He will do whatever he can to help you succeed. I didn't do well because ... well, I just didn't. But I would highly recommend him!
I Love Dr. G!
Very sweet, smart, and funny guy. The lectures can be difficult to follow, but that's just the nature of orgo. Initially, I didn't get great grades because I underestimated the effort required. Do ALL of the assigned practice problems. Seems like a lot, but they cover everything. Tests and quizzes are curved. If you're willing to work, take him.
Of all my professors I've had, Dr. G has had the biggest impact on me. He motivated me to be interested in chemistry & want to do well in his class. Chemistry is not my best subject, but I did all the work he assigned, studied every day, asked a lot of questions. Those who didn't do well didn't utilize the resources he provided & recommended.
He's a great guy but his class style isn't for everyone. His classes are always one night a week for three hours and you cover a lot of dense material. He really tries to help prepare his students, but once it comes to the actual quizzes/exams it's a different story. There's no partial credit on the free response and so your grade can tank quickly.
Dr. G is the best professor I have had at VCU. His class is difficult, but like any other orgo class, this subject is tough to grasp. However, Dr. G puts in all his effort to help you try to understand all the concepts in the best way possible. Even though his class was once a week for 3 hours long, his humor will get you through it all :)
An amazing professor!! His class is all about exams and quizzes. However, you will easily pass the exams and quizzes if you do the problems he suggests from the textbook and ACS booklet. Definitely not the easiest class but an A is very possible if you put in a lot of effort doing problems and practicing. DO NOT SLACK, the class moves fast.
He is a great teacher, but you have to work in his class. Orgo 2 is not easy, espically if you got a C in Orgo 1 with another professor (like I did). I put in hours of work a week, stayed engaged in class, did all the homework, and managed a B in the class as I got an 80 on the final. He's very sweet, and through. Always being motivating and kind.
Orgo is such a difficult class but Dr.G gives you all the tools to succeed. I retook the class with him after failing Baker. The difference is night and day. He is organized and clear. If you need help, he will certainly help you. The curves are generous and you actually learn the material. Can't say enought great things about him and his class.
Dr. G is a one of a kind professor. He is truly the best chemistry teacher I've ever had in my life. His class is difficult as organic chemistry tends to be (that's pretty unavoidable) but he does everything he can to help you succeed. From all of his jokes to his inspiring stories, he is a gem and if you have the chance to take him: DO IT
Dr. G is an amazing professor. He actually cares about your success an will meet you halfway. Orgo is still difficult, but if you work hard you will be fine. Go to class and do all the suggested problems.
Absolutely the hardest class I have taken at VCU. Have a 4.0 GPA (and taken challenging courses like animal phys, bio of cancer, etc.) and I very barely got an A. Would not recommend. The 3 hour lecture is goes too fast and HW problems are extremely time-consuming. If you are willing to spend 15 hours per week on this class, then you can take it.
Yoda, he is
Dr. G is the best Orgo professor. He really cares and wants students to learn. His exams and quizes can be hard, but he gives you sample quizzes and exams. He gives you a copy of the notes that you just have to fill in the blank, but his class is once a week at night. You will get back the effort you put in. Do practice problems and ACS practice!
I took him for CHEM 302 and it was a mistake. His exams and quizzes are very hard. I did everyting but still wasnt able to get an A. He's a good guy but he is the hardest orgo teacher in VCU. I have taken physiology, immunology, biochem, etc and got all A's but not in this class. I had a 3.5 GPA and my GPA dropped down after taking Orgo2 with Dr. G
Dr. G is the BEST EVER! Downside is meeting once a week but he has 5 TAs, SI leader, posts questions to do in the textbook in addition to sapling and ACS AAANDDD practice quizzes/exams! ORGO is hard no matter who you take it with, but if you use all the resources he gives you there's no way you won't pass.
The best professor. Very funny, caring and a helper for the students. I think his exams and quizzes are very fair and he has a bit curve.
His tests are hard, as long as you do all the problems given and read the book and notes he provides, you're good. He gives practice quizzes and exams. Funny and knows a lot. Its a 3 hr class so be prepared. Exams and quizzes are timed and the rest is to take notes and do clickers. Final is 2 parts w his and ACS. He really works your brain.
Dr. G is so wonderful. I received a D in Bakers 302 class and I repeated the class w/ Dr. G which was the best decision. Someone stated how it was like night/day comparing Dr. G to baker and Im so glad I took their advice b/c its true! Hes very straightforward and hilarious. As long as you study and review the content he gives, youll do fine!
Do ALL the homework assignments!!!! His quizzes and exams are similar to them. Go to his office hours with questions. He is a funny, caring man who has a great passion on ORGO and will make you love the class (if you pass, of course)
Dr.G is a funny and insiping professor, who is genuinely interested in getting students to learn. That being said, you really need to work hard for an A or even a B. I spent about 15 hrs studying and scraped an A. Do the book problems. They will be your best friend.
DR.g is very funny and caring uyg, but he does not teach at all. If you dont like to learn from the textbook you will fail his class 100 percent. That said if you're like me and dont like classwork and instead prefer to work alone he is the perfect professor.
Dr.G is probably the best professor at vcu, he is so funny and genuinely cares about his students. His class is definitely very difficult but its orgo so thats a given. The three hour long class may seem a little off putting but it is WORTH IT! Do ALL of the textbook problems or else you will not pass. TAKE DR.G!!!!
This class is hard but he's an amazing man. To get an A in this class, you really NEED to do all of the homework and suggested problems. You NEED to do the sample quizzes and tests. You NEED to review each note, each BlackBoard post, and each pink note. It's very possible, but it takes up SO much time. Just be prepared!
I struggled so much in CHEM 301 and Dr. G turned that right around! His lectures and notes are great, if you can take organic II with him, definitely do so! Hes become my favorite professor by far. That said, youll still have to do your part and study well + attend TA sessions to get the most out of the class and do well on the ACS
Dr. G is by far my favorite professor I've had at VCU so far. He is absolutely hilarious and genuinely cares about all of his students. I would definitely recommend taking lab with him as well! I will definitely be taking CHEM 302 with him.
Dr. G is by far one of the best professor I've ever had. Yes, his class is hard and you have to study a loot, but his teaching style is really helpful and most of his students do very well on the orgo section of the MCAT (they get close to perfect scores on it). The textbook problems are your best friend (do all of them twice if possible!)
Dr. G is probably the most interesting chem 301 teach by far. Beware of his accent because it can make you sleepy. Overall, good teacher but you really have to put effort in learning.
Very sweet and funny professor, but I was thrown off with his accent. He lectures during class, but would recommend reading the chapters beforehand so you're not lost. His exams are initially difficult but become predictable as the semester continues. He truly cares about his students success and trusts them.
This is a very hard class overall. You need to read the textbook and DO ALL THE PROBLEMS. He's a great person to ask questions during office hours but he kind of brushes over the lectures. Tests are hard but you get used to the format overtime. Do all the practice quizzes and tests. He has 2 finals, his own and the ACS.
I hate chem labs, but his lectures are not bad and he is such a cute old man with adorable humor that it is impossible to hate him. The quizzes he gave were not bad at all. You have to study hard for the exams however but it is do able. I hate chem labs but I got an A in the class. Just do your work and stay on top, you will do fine.
Had both 301 and 302 with him, I personally loved 302 since it was much easier to understand. You really have to work for an A, do the textbook problems, ACS problems, look over the notes. Without doing practice problems, you will not do well in this course. If your confused go to his office hours, he's really sweet. Also utilize precep sessions
Dr. G was an amazing professor for my Organic Chemistry 2 experience. Definitely a step up from my previous professor in lectures and getting straight to the point for material you need to know. He truly cares for his student and cares about his students success in his class. I recommend him for Organic Chemistry if he is available!
I just finished taking Dr. G's CHEM 302 course over the summer. Your grade is made up of 6 quizzes (lowest dropped), 3 exams, and the ACS final for CHEM 301 and CHEM 302. He was an amazing professor and curved the assignments generously. I never taught I would finish with an A, but I did and I'm thrilled! He is also very funny and personable.
Dr. G is, to this day, my favorite professor. I genuinely love him so much. His lectures are really late and long, which scares some people off, but I highly recommend you take his class. He is fun and really cares about students, plus he gives you everything you need to succeed in class and curves. If you want to enjoy orgo and learn, take him.
Dr. G is by far my favorite professor. He is the sweetest dude I've ever met. I love him with my whole heart, and he is such an amazing professor and has accomplished a lot in his field. He really knows what he's doing, and will do everything he can to make sure you understand the material. His lectures are late and long, but he's hilarious!
You will get an A as long as you do the wade problems in the textbook and TA session. He curved all quizzes and exams!
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS EVER. I was so scared to take him, but he made organic chemistry one of my favorite classes ever. He is one of the nicest, most caring teachers ever and he cares about his students. Definitely take him if you can.
Dr. G is the only professor that made me love chemistry. You will have to study hard for this class but he gives you notes to print out. Study of the notes he gives you and LISTEN and PARTICIPATE in class. Although he is the best organic chemistry professor in my opinion, he cannot work for you if you don't try your best studying. Yoda is he indeed
Dr. G is the most hilarious prof that you'll ever meet. he made me adore his lectures although they were long but fun with his jokes! when you attend his class get ready to laugh !!! :)
Dr. G is a great professor! However, CHEZ is definitely a lot of work in comparison to the other orgo lab teachers (pre-lab assignment, sapling, write-up, and quiz due every week, along with 2 full lab reports and 2 exams). However, if you do all the daily work, he is a very fair grader! Tests can be somewhat difficult, but doable for sure!
Dr. G is hilarious. He tries his best to make sure everyone is not worried about this hard subject and make his lectures funny. He posts them online the next day in case you miss a class. There are assignments every week that can take a few hours, but as long as you follow the instructions, it is an easy A.
Dr. G is a real gem of VCU, he cares sm about his students and it reflects. He curves pretty nicely and is always there to help you. His TAs were amazing too. Would highly recommend for you to take his class!!
He is funny but his class will require so much work in order to get an A. Honestly Organic Chemistry is a hard subject so in any case the class will be difficult, however he made it a bit less scary.
The best orgo prof at vcu. I had him for 301 and 302 and I'm so glad I did. His class is late but it's worth it. Lets you know he cares and always stays after class to answer questions, DO THE SUGGESTED PROBLEMS(!!!) i cannot stress that enough his tests are exactly like them and the ACS probs as well. His TA's are super sweet and a great help too.
Orgo II is always a nightmarish landscape, but Dr. G. held his own. The class is appropriately balanced in terms of difficulty, and the requirements to succeed are crystal clear. He takes some getting used to, but it worked out. He's also hilarious, which really helps when you're in the depths of Orgo.
Such a great prof. He is super funny and truly cares about his students. He gives you practice quizzes for each quiz and exam, study from those and you will do fine in his class.
