Excellent teacher, funny and interesting, makes math a matter of thinking and systematic experiment, not memorization. You can spend over 24 hours on an exam, not finish two of the problems, and still get an A, if you show you've tried and thought.
He's a good prof if you're a math major b/c he concentrates on deriving calc functions and not actually learning calc. Overall, he wants you to learn the materials rather than learning short cuts (formulas). Nice guy though.
nice guy....but his tests are hard as $hit. I took the class as a refresher and got D.....first time I took the class I got an A
Concentrates on teaching you how to think and derive formulas, not just memorizing. A few more example problems might have been useful. Tests are extremely difficult, but he's usually good with the partial credit if you make a good attempt.

hard teacher for diff eq, get julie raye
Difficult teacher. Only serious math majors should ever take his courses. He concentrates mostly on derivations, not really teaching much applications.
Ghidewon is alright, he's just way too hard. He expects everyone taking his class to become a mathematician so dont take him if your not a math major.
You want to learn math? Take him. But make sure you are ready to work. I mean work hard. One more thing, do not hesitate to ask for his help. His door is always open and will give you all the help you need.
Ghidewon is a very caring, interested, and fascinating person and teacher. He wants everyone to think in new ways and grow academically. Be prepared to work and be open to getting help ... also be respectful of teacher and fellow students ...
Ghidewon may be a wonderful person outside of school, but unfortunately he represents one of many flaws I have found since my arrival here. Unfortunately, my space is limited here. However, simply put, DO NOT ENROLL IN ONE OF HIS CLASSES!!!!!
Very smart man.Obviously used to teaching Grad lvl.Vile tests,#10-25 Q's,some xtra crdt.Take-homes even harder.Non-MTH mjrs should not take the five week session, unless you don't mind spending that time rather ****y...
truly remarkable, patient, thorough, and encouraging prof -- i learned SO much. he was amazing.
He has a style of teaching that many students do not learn well from. Unfortunately he does not try to work with the students and help them to succeed. If you aren't doing well in the class in the beginning, get out of the class, because it is not going to get any better!

Absolutely the best teacher I've ever had! He is patient, kind and extremely knowledgable. He is always ready to help students when they come to him with questions and he has no problem working with them one on one to make sure they understand what he's teaching. I highly recommend taking him!

This class is very boring to start with and this guy just makes it worse. If you ask a question he just makes fun of you. He knows alot about math but has a very hard time getting the information accross. He does not believe in shortcuts so he teaches you the hardest possible way to do everythi
class is almost impossible! More homework for a class then I have ever seen! I would enjoy a normal math class with him because he seems to know how to teach math, however mathematical computing is another story!
If you want an easy class, dont take him. If you want to be able to retain the information afterwards, take him. He cares about you knowing the info after you leave the class. He makes you think rather than just giving an answer to you. Final was hard but open book. He loves mathematics and it show.
Very helpfull and the smartest teacher I have had at VCU. Take him only if you want to learn. Not a easy teacher
He has high standards and expects alot from the students. Definately not a class you can blow off and therefore you learn more than you had expected. Hindsight: I would take his class all over again!
Very demanding and makes very hard tests, but is very willing to explain and provide help outside of class.
Ghidewon is exceptionally intelligent and knowledgeable. He is one of my favorite professors. Most of his detractors either can't get past his accent, or don't like to be challenged. If this describes you, don't take his classes.
He is an intelligent man, but a worthless teacher. I got a 77 average, and was curved to the only A. His tests are extremely long, and require memorization of Newton's original proofs for the fundamental theorem. Since I speak Amharic and Eritrean dialects
Very demanding. Expects students to learn all material in text despite not having enough class time to teach everything. Tests consist of hardest problems in books. Typically half the class withdraws, and a heavy curve is required to pass students (max 70%
very bad professor
This class demands time. You will also need to know your math for many of the problems. Show up to classes and buy the program.
This is the professor you take if you love mathematics. If you don't you are going to have a hard time. Either way, he is very helpful.
Yes, Ghidewon has high expectations, but he is extremely helpful! He is very intelligent, is passionate about Mathematics, and you will learn A LOT from him. Don't miss his lectures, look over your notes, and be sure to read the textbook even if he doesn't cover it in class. Ghidewon is a wonderful prof. and enjoys helping students! Very possib
Ghidewon, as he prefers to be called, is a brilliant man. There is much to be learned from his wisdom. Although he requires hard work, the reward of a strong understanding of the material is worth it. I hope I get to take another class with him.
The man is brilliant and extremely helpful. The class demands a LOT but honestly, i came out of it extremely prepared for any later courses that demanded the usage of a proramming language. Make sure to ask him for help!!! He's extremely willing to sit down with you and work things out with you until YOU understand. I HIGHLY recommend him
Helpful and inspiring!
You have to learn, and be able to teach yourself. He will help but you have to know what questions to ask.
Enthusiasm doesn't describe Ghidewon. He not only knows math, he loves it, which rubs off on you and by the end of Math 200, I wanted to attend every single class. Take him, you will have fun for once in a Math class.
The only way you can get a decent grade in this class is if you have a computer science background or else you're screwed!
This guy makes linear algebra hard. avoid taking his class if you can. his tests are ridiculous. his take home tests are next to impossible. im half bald now
Very very hard teacher. He wants you to learn, and you will learn. He sticks to the book and by sticks I mean the book is law. There is no curve, except 5 points. The inclass tests are hard, and the take home tests are loooonnggg. Except to use Maple or Matlab, alot. Very good guy though, hard to understand. It's fun to listen to his stories
run away don't take this class moves way too fast and doesn't get to the point too
He was kinda hard but made exams multiple choice and included easy questions like "What class are you taking an exam in now?" to give us bonus points. The best part for me was that he didnt have a policy against using TI-89 or TI-92 calculators which would find the limits, integrals, and derivitives on its own.
very helpful during office hours.wants the students to succeed. Mostly you will need to be able to learn stuff and read the book on your own though... office hours were more helpful than class.
Ghidewon is very helpful and is a great professor. He knows his math and Maple. When this semester started I didn't particularly enjoy math and I dislike programing but now I have a better disposition to both.
He is the hardest math teacher I have ever had. This class requires much practice and study. If you really want to learn the application and want a challenge take him, if you're looking for an easy A find somebody else. He is willing to explain all concepts. If you are determined enough you could get an A, like me!!
Did Dr. Ghidewon teach you anything about serving a dictator? He is an expert on that as he has been silencing dissent in defense of the Eritrean Dictator, Isaias Afewerki. He has been doing that for years and years now. Dr. Ghidewon does his service to the dictator here in the United States of America, the land of the free. All you have to do

BEST MATH TEACHER
He is not my cup of tea. He uses his tablet to write notes, which would be great, if it wasn't coming from the textbook verbatim. His tests are incredibly hard, especially since he can't teach well. If you don't learn well from the textbook, avoid him at all costs since he will frustrate you. If you enjoy the textbook, then he is the one for you.
We were switched to this teacher right smack in the middle of the semester seeing as our teacher was sick. He has completely different style of teacher and about 70% of the class less than a 50 on his first test he gave us. He is extremely hard!
First of all, he loves math. And he wants you to love math. He's a pretty good teacher and will explain things if you need to, but he does move a bit fast. However his teaching style and random stories are pretty amusing. If you want an easy A avoid him, but he's not a bad guy nor teacher.
As long as you understand his lectures and do homework, exams should be piece of cake. Do your online homewoke. Many questions on the exam are from homework. Really.
The subject can be tough, but he explain the subject very well. He is very clear in his teaching. He is really helpful and he will teach you whenever you need help. You will do fine in tests as long as you do and understand the homework.
This is the worst Calculus teacher at VCU. I spent more time studying ang getting help from a tutor for this class! He is very passionate about math but if you ask questions and ask him to explain something again, be gets mad and rude. I DO NOT recommend taking this professor. The only good thing about this professor is he curves his test.
Ghidewon was a horrible professor. His teaching methods were basically to explain some math theory and then expect you to be able to put together the programming on your own. Be very careful to be respectful because he can be very touchy.
Very intense, yells loudly sometimes. Talks about politics and theories to try to relate to math. Then lectures us about how we should live our lives and not waste it...but other than that he goes through the material thoroughly, tests are difficult but he curves tests and his A is 85. Was not my favorite teacher but i retained the information.
He's hard but you will learn a lot. He is a nice guy and generally cares about students learning. People consider him to be a bad professor, but that's because he is trying to actually teach you something; he's not going to just give you the answer. Respect him and listen to what he's telling you, and above all, want to learn the subject.
Dr. Ghidewon is a very helpful teacher. He loves teaching and he loves math. He has high standards for his students. He teaches well so he expects a lot from his students too. Even after the class he really got out of his way to help me succed in my college work. A real TEACHER. If you really want to learn math, you are in the right place!
He is a great teacher if you want to really learn math, however he's over passionate and teaches extra stuff and goes off topic. I had him as a professor for math 307, and he made the course every hard compared to other teachers. Also, going to class doesn't help, because he has a think accent and is incomprehensible. Also, he "mean!"
I'm convinced the person below me is Professor Ghidewon himself as no human being who actually took this course could rate him positively. Sporting a delusional sense of intellectual grandeur, Ghidewon teaches (i use this word losely) an extremely difficult course. Passable, yes, but an A is obtainable only if you dedicate ALL of your time to it
Simply put, Runnnn. This is a teacher with a humongous ego. Very unhelpful and talks about unrelated subjects africa politics is his favorite. His accent is awful specially when he gets upset which is often. If you need this class to graduate, do not take this professor. Don't get duped by the positive comments. He is writing them.
Great teacher, very good at explaining linear algebra. If anything wasn't clear I just went to his office hours or grabbed him after class. Only cracked the textbook to do homework, which didn't take too long to do anyway. No reason you can't get an A if you understand the material.
His Tests are extremely hard, do not take him during the summer!!1 He packs too much material into one test and he doesnt give homework to balance your grade!!!
This is the worst teacher one can have. Extremely pompous & arrogant. Teaches straight from the book & doesn't bother to clarify. Thinks everyone know everything; if not, its your fault. Uses hardest concepts on test that aren't covered a lot. Good comments are written by him. Even the tutor rec. by the math dept.refuses to tutor his students.
GAA obviously knows his stuff, but is horrible at teaching the material. I would recommend that you only take him if you don't have the time to self-teach yourself (I did all the problems in the book with no problem, but still get C's on the test, even with liberal grading scale and curves)
The comments I see here are ridiculous. Great teacher, better ability to speak than myself (born in US) or anyone else I know here. Has the ability to inspire and explain subjects well. I can only imagine the limited abilities of those who wrote these reviews. If you are responsible and care to learn, Ghidewon is a great teacher and role model.
Ghidewon is simply the best mathematics professor of all time. If you care about your GPA, don't take his class. If you have an insatiable urge to learn mathematics, you're stupid to not take a class with this mathematician. He's spectacular.
He is very good teacher.
Can't teach well, teaches from the book, but occasionally teaches stuff book doesn't cover so need to get notes or you miss out, but taking notes is hard to do. HW is so late to be assigned that it doesn't come until after the exam that covers it so lack of practice problems. no review before exams, except final. not enough space to say everything.
350 characters is not enough room to say everything that was wrong with him. He is a horrible, HORRIBLE professor and I advise anyone to avoid taking him at all costs.
Not the easiest teacher and he makes the course more difficult than necessary. However, you do learn a lot out of the course and he is always willing to help if you ask.
Most arrogant teacher I've ever seen. I was excited at first by the way he talked, But was dismayed to discover he apparently doesn't even know that "either A or B is true" means A XOR B. I then started writing my homework in perfect formal math notation to evade his English language deficit, which he took off points for. What a joke.
Differential Equations with this professor was nearly impossible. I basically had to teach myself through Khan Academy and YouTube videos because he was not capable of teaching the class. His tests are unfair and extremely hard. He gives no review sheets and just tells you that the test problems will come from the textbook, nothing more specific.
Obviously an extremely intelligent man and knowledgeable about mathematics, but does not do a good job of transferring that knowledge to students. When he's teaching I feel as though he's just trying to show us how much he knows rather than trying to make sure we know it too. it can be so frustrating trying to follow his lectures. Avoid if you can.
This dude is the man. I honestly don't understand the complaints on here. To be clear, 201 with him is hard. He cares so intensely about not only the material, but that YOU learn the material. Unfortunately its almost a fault of his, as he cares more about that than your grades. But his grading scale (60 for a C, 75 is a B) makes life easier
The toughest class I've ever taken. If you have a 4.0 gpa, it will likely drop it. You need to read out of the textbook and become 150% proficient with the material in order to get an A on any of the exams he gives. Exams are mainly T/F theory, multiple choice, and then some long calculations.
Information on exams are not always covered. He did not give enough time to work on group projects, and gave very little info on the projects. Homework is one online, but he was not consistent with due dates and did not let you know when homework is due. Exams were hard, and although he gave practice exams, he did not provide solutions. Hard class.
No reminders/ due dates. Extremely bad at teaching and harsh tests and grading. No response to emails/ Cengage help for problems.
Expect to have mandatory lectures while at the same time teaching yourself. The lectures are basically useless as he does not actually teach during them, rather he just assigns questions to students and then sits quiet. Overall I would highly recommend NOT taking any course taught by Ghidewon.
lecture doesn't contain everything on the tests. His tests are so hard to do well on even with hours of studying. he changes topics all the time and writes so tiny on the board you cant read it.His tests consist of tiny details he MAY have mentioned for 1 minute in class. You can really never be prepared for whatever he decides to put on his tests.
Hard grader and some test problems are not covered in the lecture. Pay attention to every thing he says because something he mentions in passing for a second ends up being on the test. Hard to follow lectures.
An intelligent with high IQ interesting Professor. Pay attention to every single details and there is a lot to learn from him.
Tests are very long and not similar to lecture, and powerpoints/textbook readings that are essential to passing tests are never communicated. He often gets class sections mixed up and is unreachable outside of class. He acts as if all concepts are common sense and becomes irritated whenever someone asks a question. Steer clear.
His style of teaching is very old school. He goes over answers to textbook questions but doesn't write the question so its difficult to follow along. He writes on a chalkboard so he doesn't post any material he goes over in class on canvas. His tests and quizzes are worded awkwardly and questions are sometimes about topics we've never discussed.
He always expects a lot from each the student as if everyone is a math genius. He goes over lecture as if everyone has learned this before and everything is common sense, briefly and verbally goes over examples that are important for your test, so it's really hard to follow and confusing. Answer questions and email in a very rude way.
Professor was very fair, not overly difficult. I enjoyed the class and would happily take one with him again. Was always available to review problems/homework/tests, if you put in the work you'll do fine. Can be picky grading but I think that's reasonable in a course like MATH 300. Explains things well, easy to understand.
Every bad review you see here is true, he doesn't reply to emails, is rude to people who ask questions, overcomplicates lessons and tests, will mention something briefly and put that on the exam, PLEASE avoid him if you can
I think the best parts about this professor were his passion for the subject and his very generous grading scale. He is a hard grader and his tests are impossible, however, his class is still passable!
In all honesty he is not that bad as the reviews say (For math200 at least) he is very knowledgeable and objectively speaking he is not a bad teacher, he makes sure you understand before moving on, (YOU HAVE TO ATTEND HIS CLASSES TO PASS). He can be passive aggressive at times but its easy to get at least a B in the class. His 75-90 is a B.
Don't take this professor unless you don't want to learn anything and get a C. You will not get an A in his class he puts stuff he never taught on the exam and he teaches like this is a refresher course. After taking this course I learned next to nothing and got nothing out of it but a C to my GPA.
Class was brutal. Exam questions were significantly harder than anything covered in class. To boot, on two exams the highest grades were 65%, and nothing was curved. The only positive thing I have to say that is that there was extra credit and the grading scale is slighty generous.
His lectures are difficult for students to understand, and he makes the tests EXTRA DIFFICULT. He does not accept it when we have to request our homework extensions. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU SIGN UP.
Hard class, bad online learning platform, avoid this class. Course grade is defined by 3 major test and exam. If you get a bad grade on one of the test, you are cooked for the rest of the semester if you want an A.
Not that bad, as long as you actually went to class he went through everything we would eventually see on the test. And while most of the grade was based on tests, the homework gave a nice boost. Cool guy as well.
This guy is a super tough grader. I lost 14% on a quiz because the sign in front was wrong due to a minor error. He does not give partial credit for exam/ quiz questions. I emailed him about the homework (because that's what he says to do) and he never responded. Not helpful, if you take it prepare to teach yourself from the homework (which suck)
Very tough grader and does not teach well in his lectures. When asking questions, he would not give an explanation but rather just repeat what he said but slower. He also is very arrogant and a very his way or no way professor thinking he knows best all the time giving no room for flexibility. Would not recommend taking him at all.
He is a super cool dude. That being said, this dude is one of the harshest graders I have ever had. That also being said, a 60 is a c, a 75 is a b, and a 90 is an a, so if you try and show up, you can all but guarantee yourself a c. Very difficult class if you want an a, but show up you will definitely pass.
Trying to get students to fail
The first few weeks are the most difficult. The Prof. does not give clear grading structure (as to what is dropped or not) and gives a pop quiz every week. Some of the quizzes and tests have adequate study material provided, while others don't. I got an A thanks to the Prof. being kind enough to make the last test and the Final Exam open notes.
Thank you!!
Brutal class, with exams much harder than covered. Use unstuck AI alongside the textbook to prepare - it really helped me get through the tough grading. Lectures can be confusing, but the generous curve made passing possible.
the teacher does not explain concepts clearly, making it difficult to understand the material. Tests are challenging, but there is not enough study material provided to prepare properly. Without proper guidance or relevant resources, studying feels unstructured and frustrating.
I'll be honest everybody hates on Ghidewon, but professory giddy is unirionically the best math professor I have ever had. Yes, the class is difficult, but if you just do what he tells you to do, the questions on his exams and tests are pretty similar. Funny guy, and in my opinion, makes the lectures interesting and fun. Love prof giddy
Pop quizzes, heavy homework, very bad lecturer. he did not use Canvas properly, didn't display dates of exams or quizzes. He would hand out exams and half the class wouldn't be there bc they didn't know. The class was doing so bad that he had to hand out a take-home final AND the 3rd exam so he doesn't get fired... AVOID HIM so you can learn.
Had Ghidewon for two classes. He expects u to want to be there (he can tell if u dont)!!!!! When he lectures, write down what he's saying, not only what's on the slide. Test heavy but hides old exam questions under files on Canvas. Reading the textbook is encouraged but u do not have to if u go to class and actually listen. Hes wise and hilarious.
EVERYBODY hates on Ghidewon but the goat Giddy is an amazing math professor who motivated me to do more with my life(hes scary sometimes). The class is difficult but if you do what he tells you and watch ORGO CHEM TUTOR, the questions on his exams and tests are chill. Guy has a thick accent, and it's hilarious. The lectures are interesting and fun
He's super unpredictable. Horrible at putting in grades. Writes on the whiteboard, so you will miss half of the lecture if he is on the other side of the classroom. Tests are similar to the activities given. He will rant about life lessons, which personally got annoying. He knows his stuff, but I deeply dislike the way he ran the class.
Pretty decent professor overall, he taught in a pretty scheduled manner so you would know what topic you were on. He shows how to complete problems in multiple ways and justifies his solutions very throughly. Overall if you go to class you will be fine! You may have to spend a good amount of time practicing outside of class. Very nice professor!
