Great guy
He is a very nice, helpful teacher. He gives out study guides for each exam, making them very similar to the actual exam. Sometimes can be hard to understand, but you can just follow the powerpoint as he goes.
Awesome teacher. He tries hard to make everyone get A's. Gives out tons of extra credit. Supposedly in all his years teaching he has never given a grade lower than a C
Great professor. Go to class every day, he gives out a ton of extra credit and tells you exactly what will be on each exam. Learned a lot in his class. Buy the book its cheap and very helpful for quizzes. Tells you exactly what's on each exam. Definitely recommend this professor.
Easy class! Go everyday- he says attendance isn't mandatory but he gives out a ton of extra credit if you attend. Tests are super easy- he tells you exactly what is going to be on them. I would very highly recommend him!
Very easy class. Powerpoint notes pretty much eliminate your need for a textbook. Wants everyone to pass so he offers lots of extra credit!
Nene is a professor to definitely consider. He is a very nice guy who TRULY cares about his students' grades. He provides a lot of extra credit for that reason. He can be hard to understand sometimes, and if you take Micro with him it's a hard subject, but he makes it easier when the questions are almost straight from the practice questions.
Super nice guy. He wants you to get a good grade. Just go to class and you will get a lot of extra credit.
very good professor. easy class and the tests are easy because he gives you a lot of practice questions which is about 75% of the exams. not a lot of homework and he gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities. i would definitely recommend him. he wants you to do good in the class as well.
Great professor! He really wants you to do well. Show up to class, he gives out extra credit almost everyday, and study the review questions and you'll do fine on the tests.
He is a very knowledgeable professor and does everything in his power to make sure you do well in his class. It would take more effort to get a C or worse in this class than it is to get an A. He gives tons of extra credit and the tests are based off of the exact practice problems for the most part. Take any econ class with him, instant GPA booster
Have taken multiple classes with Gibson and hope to take more. He is a great professor, I would recommend him to anyone. Go to class, he has a lot of easy quizzes that boost your grade.
Good Professor, tests and quizzes are easy and you actually learn quite a bit.
Take his classes! Gibson is an awesome teacher and gives you what you need to succeed. The class is pretty difficult, but the daily quizzes really do help you learn and boosts your grade! Best ECON teacher at UMD.
Best econ professor I've had. He genuinely wants you to do well, also learned a lot in his class. Wish I could take him for every class.
Great guy, gives lots of in class quizzes to up your grade. Hard to understand at times. He weighs tests to your advantage. Go to class and you are guaranteed a B at least
Easy A! But very boring class and very boring teacher. He gives tons of extra credit opportunities and lets you use all your notes on the test so you will definitely get a good grade in this class!
Gibson is a great teacher and he cares about students understanding his material. Some material is boring but he tries his best to keep things interesting. He genuinely cares about students' grades and will help you as much as he possibly can. If you attend class, he makes it practically impossible to get a low grade.
I would recommend Gibson to anyone. I hate econ, but somehow I end up understanding it when he teaches. He gives so much extra credit and the assignments and review are identical to his tests so I don't know how you couldn't do well in his class. He clearly cares that his students do well. He's awesome!
I would recommend Gibson to any Econ lovers! He's clear cut on what he expects, and gives helpful study guides.
Struggled with this professor all semester. Nice enough guy but gives off an arrogant attitude. Somewhat hard to understand, but he definitely knows what he is teaching. Gives lots of extra credit and opportunities to better your grade, failed one of the exams but I ended with an A- in the course because of the extra credit.
Very hard to understand what he is saying in his lectures, expect to teach yourself everything from the book or go to the tutors because this professor is not helpful in the slightest
Hardest class I've ever taken. Draws hundreds of graphs that are easy to understand but have nothing to do with the exams, making the exams extremely difficult. His accent makes it hard to understand what he's saying. Gives a ton of extra credit, but also gives between 1-2 quizzes almost every day. Would not take a class with him again!
Initially, his accent is very hard to understand and makes it hard to learn the material. He is intimidating and was not very approachable, however once you get past his disapproving looks, he will answer your question as much as possible. He definitely knows the material, but does a poor job of teaching it in a way a lecture class understands.
Can be somewhat hard to understand. Tests are hard but most are take home and he lets you use notes which helps. I pretty much only went to class for the pop quizzes which were almost a daily occurrence. All of the notes are put online which helps if you miss a day. He is a generous grader and offers a lot of extra credit opportunities.
He can be hard to understand at times, but his accent isn't too bad. He gives extra credit like no other and it's AMAZING. He gives "pop quizzes" but almost always warns you throughout the week. All of the extra credit he offers is in class, so if you want it, GO TO CLASS. Exams are fair and my class had them online outside of class.
Nene is a great teacher and makes Micro economics easier to understand. Take Micro from him!
Gives you a ton of extra credit so go to class. Also makes it very clear what is on the tests. Very helpful teacher and an all around nice guy.
this dude will literally never tell you what he wants. there is no theme to when things are due and oftentimes he will add extra assignments to be due on the same date as others without telling anyone. classic LSBE professor
You can ace all the homework and fail every test because he gives you the generic homework from the textbook and then makes every test way harder than anything youve ever covered before. Avoid this prof.
Does nothing to help students. All he cares about is doing the least amount of work to stay on UMDs payroll and he could care less about his students actually learning anything.
Gibson is a very smart man. This reflects in his lectures however, because he moves really fast through the material, and has an accent that takes awhile to get used to. Show up to class. On days with low attendance, he gives out open note quizzes from that days lecture.
His lectures are completely boring and useless since he posts all of his notes online, however he loves giving pop quizzes at least once a week so that you pretty much have to show up most classes or lose the 10 points. He does give extra credit however. I didn't find him very helpful or nice one-on-one, he seems bothered with you one-on-one.
Excellent teacher! Tells you exactly what to expect in the class. Very helpful outside of class, can be kind of intimidating but don't let that deter you. Big group paper: pretty easy, gives you clear guidelines and helps you complete it. Big believer in "popquizzes" so don't skip class!
I really didn't care for this professor. I felt there was a language barrier as I never could get used to his accent so I never could understand him, this made the lectures miserable. He gave lots of pop quizzes so skipping class was near impossible. I had to teach my self basically because I got nothing out of his lectures. I do not recommend him!
He is very knowledgeable and funny. Has a slight accent but is very easy to understand. He often gives in-class quizzes, so attendance is highly recommended. Tests are a large portion of your grade.
In general, he is fine. What I hate is his accent is kind of "too bad to understand" sometimes, especially if you are no native speaker. At the other hand, he is a kind man. There are a lot of homework and online quizzes to take, no kidding ,a lot! Be aware if you take him you will spend as much time as a math class in your eco class.
He's a great professor. He likes to give pop quizzes, but he usually counts them as extra credit anyway. This subject matter is not difficult if you pay attention in class. Speaking of which, he has a strict no cell phone policy & will make you leave if you are on your phone. However, he is a very kind & understanding person & is approachable.
Gibson has been my favorite professor at UMD. He knows Econ extremely well and is very transparent on what you will be tested on. Go to class because their are quizzes 75% of the time that may count for extra credit on tests. Great guy and really wants you to succeed.
He is not "Easy A" professor. Why do people say that he is? I guess he is changing his policy.. His only advantage was 'Easy A' class, and not his class does not have any advantage to take.
He has good personality and humor. However, I do not like his exams. He gave several problems that asked the spelling of laws or what year an event happend, which are ridiculous, too minor, and not relevant with economics. The average score of each exam of the class was 70s, quite low. He is not generous grader. That his class is Easy A is rumor.
His class is boring and low-quality. He wants students to learn Zimbabwe in too much detail. I don't want to know about Zimbabwe after taking his class. I would have chosen other elective class other than this class if I could return to the moment of choice.
I got A-, which is not bad. However, I am still not satisfied with the class. Final exam covered too broad range, but the questions of final were too specific. The exams during the semester were not related to economic issue but just memorizing tiny things. I felt like that I had a IQ test, not global economic exam. Other than that, overally good.
He takes more time telling us not to cheat than teaching the course content. To succeed in this class, I suggest an abundant amount of repetition on the practice exams. Nene means well, and he is approachable in office hours.
Terrible lectures, he just scribbles on already typed notes and is very difficult to understand. You can expect that 50% of the time there will be a pop quiz at the end of class, which you're allowed to use notes on. He's one of those profs that instead making sure everyone understands the material, just lowers the grade scale or gives extra credt
Gibson was a good professor. Lectures can get boring but you will learn a lot if you go and pay attention. Gives a ton of pop quizzes but offers a lot of extra credit as well. Tests were pretty tough, He does not curve tests but offer many chances to earn extra credit points to exams. Overall he was a very nice guy and is a good choice for ECON1023
Gibson is an awful professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The 3 exams that make up most of your grade have nothing to do with things learned in class. Gibson is hard to understand and moves through material way too fast.
He projects notes for the class but goes through them so quickly it's not helpful and reads it verbatim. The exams are hard and are heavily weighted in the class and your final grade is hard to calculate until he enters it. Pop-quizzes are at least once a week and some are for extra credit.
His teaching is good, but in the end your best bet to do good on exams is to study the practice exam set online and take it like 20 times, until you get to 100%. Lot of extra credit, make sure to do those. He is flexible on grading sometimes, but almost 75% of your grade comes from exams, so make sure you do good on those
Gibson is a good professor, he really cares about his students and wants them to learn and do well. You get out what you put in, If you arent willing to come to class and try you dont deserve an A. However, an A is easily attainible by studying and putting in effort.
Gibson makes his own lectures and notes. He will expect you to follow them. He doesn't give good feedback and is hard to track down at times. I'm pretty sure most of my classmates failed our exams due to poor communication. He always had to curve and give out extra credit to make up for his average. HE ALSO MAKES THESE HORRIBLE JOKES ABOUT STUDENTS
Posts all lectures online in case you missed one. Gives a lot chances for extra credit.
Hes a very good guy who gives a lot of extra credit opportunity. The class itself is easy, however he isn't a good teacher. A lot of the content he knows hes just bad at explaining it and doesn't cover content well in the way you will see it on tests.
Always be prepared for pop quizzes that are fairly easy. The homework is easy but he's real tough prof to understand. You can break down his lectures through his notes to understand what he's saying. Tests are definitely something that you need to study for but it should be all to hard to understand.
The only materials that Professor Nene provided were the textbook, un-narrated slides, and a couple of 3 minute youtube videos. The exams had nothing to do with the assignments and he had very little contact with students. I was very unimpressed with this class. For a professor that gets paid to teach, I would expect that he put in more effort.
If you are not an econ major this class is really hard. Luckily he allows for notes on the test, but make sure to do notes on the homework as well or the tests will be extra hard. If you have a chance to take macro over micro economics I would recommend doing so. Luckily he gives lots of extra credit opportunities to help bring you grade up.
Terrible professor. I very much dislike his teaching style and the way he acts.
His lectures are just him reading slides. He reads them fast too so good luck absorbing any information. Also, Pop quizzes...
This class is brutal, the class average on our first midterm was 60 percent and with a curve, the average score was then a 69. coming straight from macroeconomics this class is so much harder. He said on the first day of class that only 10% of all students in the course receive an A in their final grade. All of my friends and I are struggling
I payed almost a grand to watch a slide show presentation three times a week, presented by a teacher who the class could barely understand and assignments the professor put no effort into making. One thing the professor was good at: showing up and remarking on students lack of attendance in the LSBE office. Disappointing to say the least.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He sits there an reads the same slideshow than I am assuming he has had for 10 years. Professor Nene does not care at all about his students and is absolutely terrible at explaining everything.
This is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Every class is content packed to the point where it is way too much information. Every time I go to his office hours for homework help or clarification he never helps. He only says read the entire chapter slide again and figure it out on your own. The tests also include trick questions!
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. does not have clear lectures, not easy to reach outside of class and does not explain formulas clearly. does not provide good review and expects us to know things he barely touches on. would not recommend so awful
If you take this class do not take it with Gibson he is such a bad professor. You can not understand a single thing he says and he goes through the slides really fast, and you have to be in class because he covers things that aren't on the slides and then puts them on the exam and he gives out random pop quizzes. Avoid Gibson's class if you can
I recommend not to take his class, he is not good at teaching. He only uses slideshows and slides fast, and just keep on talking. POP quizzes are low on grade% and exams are really terrible. Most of us are struggling now in his class, you can obviously see how low his rate here in this website. I regretted taking his class, makes my anxiety worse!
Wouldn't recommend taking micro econ with Nene. He has pop quizzes, exams are very tough and his slides wont help you study at all. You gotta know the textbook to do well and homework is wotth 30% of your grade so make sure you do all of it. Hes a nice guy but I don't think hes a very good college professor
Gibson is a very smart teacher, and he knows Economics very well. The problem is that he doesn’t teach it in a very understandable way. His class is tough, but if you read the “full notes” he posts after he finishes a chapters lectures, you should do fine. Put in the effort and you’ll do fine.
The rating says it all.
The person below or before me is lying, he is not hilarious or caring or something, you can see from the other reviews.
Gibson Nene is a nice guy but his class is very difficult. There are pop quizzes, you pretty much gotta study the textbook a lot to pass the class. Lecture notes and slides are basically useless and he only curves some tests even though half the class usually gets a F. Extra credit is limited, I would try and take Micro with someone else.
The homework is online on McGraw Hill and you only get 2 attempts per question, we have pop quizzes and the exams are very heavily weighted and are very hard to do well on, he offers extra credit but it hardly boosts your grade
This class is difficult to get a good grade in if you do not go to the lectures. Beware of pop quizzes every so often because he uses them to track attendance and missing more than 3 will drag your grade down. Overall, Gibson is a nice person but could improve as a professor.
Not a great professor. Doesn't explain things well/at all, is very unsympathetic, and doesn't help at office hours. While there may not be much homework, the few assignments and exams there are are weighted heavily, along with the addition of random pop quizzes "for attendance".
Worst Professor I've taken at UMD. The class average on the exams are below 60%, and he claims that it's because the students don't work hard enough, without assigning any blame to himself. Extremely hard to understand. Do not take him, no matter what.
Based on all the other reviews on here, you should know not to take Gibson. His tests are absurdly hard, the class average tends to be around the 60-70 range and he does not curve them. very hard to understand in lectures as well. Be ready for many pop quizzes. gives extra credit worth very small amounts that don't help your grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I am a relatively good student when it comes to getting all my work done and studying for exams. However, in this class, I couldn't study enough to even get above a C on the exams. Every class was just notes and random lecture points being addressed. Can't say enough bad things about this class and how the professor teaches.
Absolutely the worst teacher I've had, do not take his class! He brags about how many students fail. 99% lectures and he has an accent that's hard to understand, but even if he didn't, the way he teaches is horrible so it wouldn't even matter. Tests are extremely hard and barely even curved. Also, pop quizzes are very hard even with open notes.
Hard class
Nene gives random pop quizzes and the tests are extremely difficult. He is difficult to understand in lecture and I honestly didn't really learn anything from him, I had to do all of the learning on my own.
Gibson Nene doesn't seem to have a lot of passion for teaching, and spends the entire lecture talking along with a slideshow. I didn't miss one lecture, took every note from the slides, used the textbook, and studied previous assignments, but didn't do well on the exams. I would recommend taking another professor if you are able to.
tests are difficult and a large portion of final grad
If you can avoid taking micro econ with gibson. he does not teach well at all you can barely understand what he says during lectures and he will randomly give out pop quizzes about stuff we sometimes don't talk about or he says it really quickly and expects you to remember what he said
Hard to understand much of his teaching. Exams are very difficult.
This professor is horrible. He does not care about his students at all and basically doesn't teach. All he does is read off his lecture notes that don't have any substance at all. He gives pop quizzes that wont even help your grade if you don't understand. Everyone fails his exams and takes no blame. He should be fired.
Avoid at all costs. I studied the for the final exam and everything is literally difficult, he doesn't know how to teach well yet he erases some information in canvas so that you won't see it unless you attended the class. Quizzes doesn't really help at all. Exams are hard it's like taking a nurse exam, like literally choosing the best answer.
Get this professor if you want to fail ,still gives me PTSD after class ended .Will MAKE you change your major.Drop his class IMMEDIATELY
Second worst professor I have ever had. I would recommend to stay away from NENE
Avoid this professor. You're throwing money out the window because he's so bad at his job he'll make you retake the course. BS attendance policy and the pop quizzes were absolutely vile.
Gives terrible lectures, talks for over an hour straight then quizzes the class over a slide he had on the board for no more than 30 seconds. Posts the notes online but leaves out all of the graphs he shows in class.
WORST PROF AT DULUTH. Do not take it. Do it online through another college or anything but him. We were doing one of his pop quizzes in class and he screamed at a friend of mine for taking too long. He makes jokes about how many people fail his class.
Worst professor I have had at UMD by far. He reads straight off his lecture slides for an hour, then leaves. He gives out random pop quizzes that make no sense and aren't graded fairly. By far the most frustrated I've been with a prof. He just continuously threatened how students would fail the whole time.
I'm not an econ major, but I feel like this class was more complicated than it needed to be. Lectures were pretty boring and sometimes hard to understand. Homework was easy enough. Test questions didn't quite line up with the classwork. Decent guy, just didn't really enjoy this class that much.
I took applied statistics with him and would always leave the classroom more confused than when I got there. I would ask him questions and it didn't seem like he understood what me or other classmates were trying to ask. He had to offer extra credit after the exam because the entire classes comprehension and scores were so low
The worst professor I've had at UMD. Multiple times he talked about how lots of students failed his class. I've had to teach myself every subject in this class. Nothing he spoke about in class ever made sense. Worst attendance policy I've ever witnessed at UMD. Anyone who says they like him has Stockholm syndrome. This professor is a GPA killer.
He is not it. He is a very bad professor. Do not take this professor he is not reasonable whatsoever and the way he teaches hurts my brain.
Find the smallest font pencil lead possible for the notecards. If the question is not on the note card you get it wrong . Tough luck buddy
I would never recommend this professor to anybody, he is extremely hard to understand and explains things poorly. He himself seems very interested in what he is teaching but does not teach at the proper level for a class with no prereqs. Lots of random pop quizzes and does not post upcoming test dates until the week before.
His tests used really bad questions
I took this class online, however my friends were in the same class in person, and we all agree on the same things. He is a terrible teacher, he just doesn't teach he just uses other free youtube videos. His homework is kinda relative to the videos he provides, but the Quizz and Exams, are completely different and are not relative.
If you take this class, report Gibson to the department chair, if you agree he is a terrible prof. If you have not taken this class, don't. No matter how smart you think you are, your GPA will drop.
This guy blows pretty hard. Lectures are 50min slog-fest of Nene reading off slides provided by McGraw which clearly he read 4 years ago and hasnt bothered to look back, questions are shot down. If you want to save yourself from these there will surely be a pop-quiz that day. Homework is semi-related to lectures but be prepared to teach yourself.
will lower your GPA
Never take him. YOUR GPA WILL DROP. His tests are completely opposite of what he teaches and sometimes are worded wrong and do not have the correct answers. Our class was failing so bad he changed the grading scale to make us do slightly better, not to help the students, but to make himself look like a better teacher. DO NOT TAKE CLASS W/ HIM!!!!!
get ready to read the textbook. you learn almost nothing during class and he gives random pop quizzes that count towards your grade. you need to learn ALL of the content by yourself. make sure you participate in class, he gives you extra credit points which will help your final grade. take econ with ANYONE else.
Nene will gut your GPA like there's no tomorrow. Long, depressing, and difficult lectures with him rambling for almost an hour straight. YOU'LL BE FIGHTING WITH EVERY LAST BREATH TO PASS. He treats his students terribly and laughs in our faces about failing us. Exams are extremely difficult and poorly designed. He doesn't want you to succeed.
Horrible experience, told the class he would rounded grades up to the next best percentage. Then proceeded to round mine and a buddy's down. Uses a proctored browser for exams. All exams are on graphs and didn't teach how to use them. Random class pop quizzes. He barely speaks English. Avoid if possible.
Avoid this class if you can. The professor's teaching style is confusing, and the exams are extremely challenging. Attendance is mandatory, but lectures can be dull. Unstuck ai and the textbook may be more helpful than the class itself.
If possible, take any other prof for an econ or blaw credit. Lectures are simply him reading off premade slides and giving pop quizzes or discussions, which count for credit, and does not elaborate on what should be done. Unless you plan on learning all the material on your own, do not take Nene. He will take an insane toll on your sanity and GPA
Was nervous to take him due to all of the reviews, he's gotten better I think! After getting past all the introduction material, only had one canvas assignment like once a month and some discussions. Good review material for the exams. Goes through slides a little fast but posts them and takes questions during class. Good at responding to emails.
He was pretty tame. He posts his slides when he's done lecturing a module/chapter and he's always open to questions. His review sheets covered all the stuff that would've been on an exam and the group discussions or 'quizzes' that were for credit were pretty simple and he talks through them after so you can adjust your answers before turning it in.
Thought I could do it... should've dropped his class.
His lectures were often very confusing and boring, and I found myself teaching myself most of the material. He does give helpful practice tests to study before the exam, but other than that, he leaves you on your own. He has pop quizzes, so make sure you are paying attention in lectures.
many people say his class is hard because micro is a generally hard subject and business students usually dont have to put much effort into their classes. dr.nene is always free to help outside of class time and provides many resources for you to do well. if you dont put in the effort, you will NOT do well. he gives extra credit for participation!!
Not a great professor
Gibson is a nice guy, and he genuinely loves what he does. However, this class may have been the most boring class I've ever taken. He offers lots of easy extra credit, but it offsets due to the 12 page individual paper, 15 page partner paper, and the final exam all within the last 2-3 weeks of class. Hard to pay attention to lectures.
few homework assignments, and the class is graded heavily on exams and participation. handouts, every handout is the exact same common-sense question over and over again. I did not learn anything from this course, and I felt like my time was wasted. The exams were difficult, and if you do badly on the final, it completely tanks your entire grade
