He does a great job, tries to keep the class engaged and has everyone consistently working on creative projects. Has a unique sense of humor, where he makes students question themselves if he is really sarcastic or not.
If you want a good professor that knows how to teach, DO NOT TAKE GIDEON. He does know the material but he goes relatively fast through his labs.
He's pretty useless as a teacher. Goes to fast during labs assuming that everyone knows what he does. Not helpful at all. The way he grades is confusing, and he sometimes messes up with grading and gives you a zero even though you did the work so be on your toes with him!
Has unrealistic expectations for his students when he can't even get projects graded two months after we turned them in. Feedback is more of a bashing. There is literally 3 more days left of this class and I do not know 6 of my assignment grades. Also does not communicate well to his lab TA's. Goodluck if you take him and liked photoshop.
I had previously had a lot of experience with the program being used and despite this i found the course to be difficult and uninteresting. The teacher and lab instructors are completely unhelpful and extremely nit-picky in their grading. The only way to pass is to know the program from the get go or find another student who can help. Good luck
He is strict and nitpicky, but I think he's very reasonable about it. You know what he's expecting on webcourses and going to his office hours helps. He's pretty funny in class. Attendance is required for most lab and lectures or it affects your grade so be careful. Keep up with the book readings! It will bite you in the butt later.
Has exceptionally high standards for a fundamentals class. Feedback provided on projects was more of a bashing rather than a constructive criticism. I didn't learn anything from what I did wrong. Takes forever to grade projects. Doesn't clarify many things. Talks down to you over web courses and in emails at times.
Pretty funny guy, but he is very lazy when it comes to grading (took 2 months for flash project to get back), and feedback wasn't always "helpful"
Did not like this professor. Took forever to grade, talks too fast, high expectations, claims he gives full credit for trying, critiques are for everyone to bash your work, he gives no positive feedback when graded (just tells you what you did wrong), old fashioned, stiff, too many assignments. You can take him and pass but he will STRESS YOU OUT.
I can not believe this man is allowed to teach at UCF. He is unorganized and his expectations are ridiculously high for an intro class. Avoid him like the plague if you can.
Take this professor for game production! He is very helpful. Sometimes hes a little harsh but its for your benefit.
Easily best game development teach at ucf. Is he easy? No, but game development isn't either. Take his class if your serious about making games.
If you want a job in Game Design its best to listen to him. Expect to work hard for it. It is not that he is hard the job is hard
He really helped understand how the game design industry works. His class isn't simply to make a game but actually learn everything that goes behind it.
Not sure why this man never grades anything on time but I'm more than halfway through the semester and just got my first grade today(1024) when the semester started in August. You're basically teaching yourself the class and guessing what he wants in discussionspapers because nothing is graded or has feedback in time to improve future assignments
people are right on here,he takes way to long to grade and if you mispell something forget about it.
Do not take, tough grader for ridiculously easy assignments if you already know photoshop. Might as well learn from tutorials online. Read the book it'll save your grade, pay close attention in lectures.
Shbeeb is the area coordinator for digital media. So he's important I think? He's also the best game dev professor at UCF. You should take Shbeeb because he is good at what he does. He is a VERY tough grader so you have to do your best. If your not willing to do that you probably shouldn't be in Digital Media. This guy will help you get better.
Takes forever (I mean forever) to grade but leaves you no feedback, then when you ask him (politely!) about your grade he's extremely rude and snarky in his response. Maybe he's great in person, but hands down he's the most unnecessarily rude professor I've ever had a dialogue with, and I'm a senior with a 3.9 GPA. He does know his stuff though.
He might come off as abrasive in emails, but is hilarious in class, and enthusiastic about what he does. Don't think you can get away with slapping something together and turing it in to get an A. Recognizes when students are trying to go the extra mile when attending office hours and appreciates participation in class. He's pretty adorable tbh.
It's not an easy class for beginners & the course seems really overwhelming at first. It is manageable, but you have to work for it & not just expect good grades to be handed to you. Can be a tough grader, but nice & will help if you ask for it. Offers a LOT of extra credit at the end of the semester. Challenging course, but it'll make you better.
First of all, Shbeeb is a ridiculously tough grader. Expect to follow his rubric to a T and pay attention when he mentions the DOs and DON'T s of the project in lecture. It will really mess you up if you don't and possibly be displayed in class for everyone to judge. His tests are okay. Memorize the slides, pay attention and skim thro the book.
Gideon is pretty detailed when he's grading, but he is more than helpful if you go to his office and will give you feedbacksuggestions on a project if you turn it in early. He greatly reduced the amount of work that he gives, but it is still a good amount. Only tests are midterm and final -- very easy. Super strict with attendance.
Honestly I dropped the class first time I signed up for it, thought he was so rude and unnecessarily strict. I clearly just wasn't ready. Took it again Fall '14, paid attention, went to office hours, worked harder and I did pretty well. Plus he's actually is a really nice guy and turned out to be one of my favorite classes that semester.
Shbeeb is a nice guy, and he really knows his stuff, but he is an extremely tough grader (and doesn't offer much, if any extra credit). Also, don't expect grades to come back quick. It can weeks or months before he gets around to grading things. You should be happy if you get a B in this class.
It helps a little bit to drop in to his office when you need help, but for the rest of the time, he's a mighty hard grader. He knows a lot, but his expectations of student are far too high. He zooms in pixel per pixel when checking your work and takes attendance at the beginning and end of every class.
Mr. Shbeeb did not really go out of his way to teach anything. There were weekly discussions in groups, three projects, 2 quizzes, and 1 final (cumulative). He directed us to different websites to answer our questions instead of helping us and most times it was hard to understand his directions. I also did not know my grade till after the final.
Professor Shbeeb is, by far, the worst professor I've had here at UCF in 3 full years. He is extremely rude when you try to get any type of situation handled and thats only after he has ignored your messages for several days, not to mention how long it takes him to grade. If you are looking to get an easy B in this class, look for another class.
Gideon is the best game design and development instructor at UCF. Some people complain about his high expectations or tough grading rubrics (in contrast to many other Digital Media professors) but he does that in order for the students to do their best. He knows what he's talking about and I learned a lot about game design from him.
Gideon knows a great deal about game design and always tries his best to help people when they need it with office hours. He expects you to deliver the best... like the real world he tries to prepare you for. The program and field need more professors like him to weed out the people who aren't cut out for this highly competitive industry.
If you listen and engage with the discussions in class, you will get so much more out of this. Pay attention, take note of everything on grading rubrics, and ask questions. He tries to get you to think through your problems than relying on others. Loves to engage with those who take the class seriously and contribute. Same applies to other classes.
I didn't have a good experience in DIG2000 online and got a D, Now in DIG2500 class and i have to say he is way different for this class in person, I personally didn't have a hard time with this class. Don't skip class, do your work and pay attention, he's pretty cool, wouldn't mind taking him again. Ps i only used the book like twice for reference
Shbeeb knows his stuff. He's a fantastic resource if you choose to use him. He's funny and loves video games. He tries to give you as much information about designing in Flash as possible however he talks a bit fast, so you must pay attention. His assignments are tough. You must be actively involved if you want to pass.
He is very harsh in on grading and harsh on his feedback on anything. He acts as if he is smarter and better than you. He is vague in all of his instructions and expectations. His lectures are long and boring. He lectures very fast and moves the slide fast. He doesn't post his lectures afraid from someone stealing them. He is so anal on anything.
Giddeon is a tough grader in the way that he makes you work for your A which I highly respect in a teacher. He does give good feedback when he grades and gives you the chance to fight for why you deserve a better grade. Grading relies heavily on three major projects (do not underestimate these projects). I loved his class though. Very good teacher.
Always read the last line of assignment details. If you submit the wrong file type, he will DROP you 3 letter grades with barely a chance to make it up.
Class was well organized and his grading is fair.
Takes attendance in the beginning of class, so dont be late cause he takes the sheet away. 3 photoshop assignments, one is a group project. Tough grader and everything has to be named correctly or else its an automatic 0. Gives EC. Bring your laptop bc he goes over notes really fast. Be creative and not average. Can buy book but its mostly for you
Basic Intro to Photoshop class. It's an easy A. Very organized. Only a Final Exam. Takes Attendance. Grades on time. If you don't know something look it up. The lectures are entertaining and there's a class critique before majority of lectures. One of the best professors I've had so far.
Professor Shbeeb is one of only a handful of people at this school that has a wealth of knowledge and does his best to share it with his students. He is more than willing to clarify assignment criteria or provide help when requested. This is a rigorous and difficult course, and he is a strict instructor, but this was one of my favorite classes.
This is what a teacher should be. He is realistic and expects you to put in work. If there are instructions, you better follow them. His lectures are on point and thought provoking, and he always has constructive feedback. If you want to learn, have him for every class you can.
The worst professor ever. Gives out assignments that are ridiculously hard. He lectured on html vocabs and he expects us to design a whole webpage or programs by ourselves. He sends out class emails like "If you didn't complete your assignment, you've messed up." He is rude and doesn't know how to teach. Doesn't posts his lectures and tests arehard
Shbeeb is the best teacher I have ever had. He has just the right about of challenge in his class, so those that are not going into the digital world as a career or those that do not care will not do well, but if you are truly interested, you get an incredible amount of experience by the end of the course. He will help anyone if you just ask.
Gideon is another technical person who was hired because he has experience working in the gaming industry. He is not a teacher and need to take teaching courses to learn how teach students instead of just distract and confuse students and then grade them on stupid little things like a file directory when their project works fine, no thanks to him.
Do not take him for 2500 if you have any other options. His lecture in class and projects do not correlate well. Having no prior experience with coding, we were expected to create a project that was heavily involved with it. Did not explain how to meet his size limit until after the prototype, and does not give leeway for webcourse screwing up.
An amazing professor and his lectures are entertaining, during the part of the class where he goes over how to code it makes absoluetly no sense to me but the point of the class is to do that sort of thing yourself. 20% of the final grade is an assignment that is entire a website, a flash or a video game. Do the work and check webcourses.
His lectures are mandatory-- and you won't want to miss them. He's a great speaker and is fun in class while giving concise information, but doesn't pull punches when it comes to grading. I'd HIGHLY recommend taking COP2500 or another programming class before/with this one-- it's coding heavy, moreso than he lets on.
Stay away, he thinks he is funny or people would think he is, but he isn't. His rudeness through emails contrast with the good teacher act he shows in class. Thinks he is better than you and somehow makes the class harder than what it really is. Should slow down when speaking while lecturing. Pretty much bashes your work if he feels like it.
Unfortunately I got a "C" for some technical issues that occurred when submitting my project and might have gotten a "B" instead, but overall I think he does a great job at preparing his students for their future in web or game design. He is a harsh grader but he cares about preparing us. Wish he would not use Sulley but aside from that he is great
Shbeeb is all about self learning. He is an excellent instructor, but he forces you to learn on your own. If you go to his office he can be intimidating yet helpful. Easy class with no unnecessary busy work. Test and quizzes are a breeze(all online), however, you must put in effort in the final project to get a good grade.
Professor Shbeeb is great. He is an excellent lecturer and is abundantly clear in everything he says. You will never not know exactly what he is trying to communicate. The class itself is going through growing pains as new things are being done in the program, but the professor is very good. You will almost definitely enjoy him.
You have to spend a lot of time on your work to get a decent grade in the class, but it's achievable. He's a very technical teacher and his lecture is fast-paced. He pushes you to learn things outside of class, but he gives lectures that reflect his expectations for the final project. There are only a handful of assignments, so you can't mess up.
Gideon is by far the best professor that I've had. If you're serious about getting into the game industry, take him. He pushes everyone to accomplish more than what they thought they were capable of, and will do everything he can to help you as long as you ask questions and work hard. Honestly the only reason I've stuck around in this program.
He'll direct you to Google for any questions you have. He intimidates instead of embracing his students first day. He is sarcastic when stressed and doesn't really respect your opinion unless he sees it beneficial to him. Be warned, there are more teachers in the major now to choose from. Only take him if your thick skinned and desire a challenge.
Contrary to the review below me, Gideon is by far the best professor in this track. If you seriously have aspirations of getting into the video games industry, and not waste your time scraping by, Shbeeb is professor for it. There may be some rough exterior view of him, but genuinely cares about your future, and will help you the best he can.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY FOR ANYTHING. I took his Digital Imaging Fundamentals class and he expected everyone to be professional photoshoppers and his assignments and harsh grading criteria reflected that. Very rude. Bad at communication. This class was supposed to be a beginners class and he turned it into the hardest I've ever taken
I had never seen Photoshop before I took this class hoping it would be an easy online beginner class... he expects more from a beginner. He posts instructional videos on how to do assignments/what not to do, but he's a very tough grader and extremely detail oriented. Put in hard work and pay attention to his videos you'll be fine. Not an easy A.
I would definitely not recommend this professor for anyone who is expecting a smooth or easy introduction into beginning Photoshop. There seems to be an expectation for students in even the intro courses that he teaches to be well-versed in Photoshop prior to the class. His communication, at least online, comes across as terse and sarcastic.
Keep in mind, I took this class in the summer at six weeks. Never again will I do that. However, as far as this professor is concerned, he is tough at grading. I had difficulty in this class only because of his grading. He has this this called "Non-tolerable's", meaning that if you were to make one mistake you get an automatic zero. Harsh
Received an A+ in his class; worst class I ever took. He is strict, rude, and gives out false information. Grades based on terms and conditions not used anywhere else. Even the programming he taught the class was very wrong. He graded a student's work in front of the class on the projector, and laughed at the student's mistakes in class.
Do not take this class. Quizzes are online, but he grades them manually, even when he gives you the material, you will still get the answers wrong. Had the classes create a website on a game design program that he didn't go over, every class got together to try and figure it out, w/ no rubric. Told us to buy the book, only used it once. Beware
He is a tough professor, but once you get to know him HE IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO GAME DESIGN (at UCF). He will take the time to talk to you and help you out with situations beyond college. DO NOT AVOID HIM, he will push you and it will make you better.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He assigns very few assignments and grades very tough (with a very vague rubric), which leaves almost no margin for error on anything. He will put up an online quiz on Friday without talking about it in class on Thursday and have it be due Monday. On a holiday weekend. Seriously, avoid him like the plague.
doesn't help at all unless you go to his office hours. Emailed him asking for help and he responded saying he's giving me an F for emailing him. Said we should contact him through webcourses and not email and that it was stated in the syllabus (but his email was in the syllabus???). Besides that, he also didn't answer my question to begin with.
Read all the previous comments with the most likes. Getting an A is possible but it was the most unnecessarily difficult to earn. He uses a lot of jargon during lecture. Lectures rarely relate to projects and feedback is extremely vague. The most backward thing I experienced was using Unity to build a website. No one uses Unity to build a website.
If you are a hard worker & have some talents, beware. Group grades mean you are graded as if you are under Communism. You may contribute excellent design, code, models, but if your team mate (randomly chosen) has zero skills, your grade of 80 or 90 gets averaged to a 50 because he contributes nothing. Your only option is to do his work for him.
Absolutely awful. Instructions for everything were so unclear and confusing. Honestly I spent 20 minutes per assignment just trying to figure out what he was asking us to do. Don't email him and ask for help, or he'll literally lower your grade. (Not joking, it says that in his syllabus.) This class was just a constant state of confusion for me.
Gideon is serious about helping students be prepared for the game design field. He grades very tough but gives a good objective explanation about why and what people can improve on. As someone who struggled in the class I can say it was still enjoyable. If you have a one on one with him in office hours you can understand where he comes from.
Former student, found a job in the industry. Gideon prepared me very well. You have to go the extra mile in his classes because you will not survive in this industry if you don't go the extra mile. Special snowflakes will not like Gideon. Do your own research, work on your own projects outside of class and ask him questions. He knows his stuff.
I was originally nervous about taking him based on other reviews. This class will weed out those who don't want to work hard for their grade, or prefer to coast through classes. He has a clear grading rubric, and if you expect to pass, you will need to follow it exactly. Definitely go to his office hours, his help is invaluable!
Gideon is a really great professor. I was originally nervous about taking his class, but you will pass if you show up to class, pay attention, and make sure you do the work. He outlines his expectations clearly and posts the rubrics with each assignment. His lectures are so helpful for not only the class, but for working in the design field.
I absolutely adore Shbeeb. Although he may be a very tough grader, he gives the best feedback and makes it 100% possible for you to improve next time. I failed his level design course, but I made sure I would have him for game workshop. There is no better game design professor at UCF in my opinion.
From a student who has taken him 3 times, I can honestly say Gideon is just a harsh grader. The reviews don't lie, anyone can be a harsh grader. He has expectations on students who "should" already know something when it was never "taught". When asking for help, he just tells me to go on Youtube and watch a tutorial. Why am I even in college then..
Calling Shbeeb a tough grader is an understatement. His classes have been the most difficult classes I've ever been in. I failed one of his classes twice. However, he is truly the only professor I've ever learned something from. Office hours are a must as he will do everything he can to help you and guide you. Probably the best professor at UCF.
Took him online for summer, but no one else ever should. There's only 9 assignments: 4 group assignments and 5 quizzes. Quizzes are easy, but group assignments have unclear directions and are all or nothing grades. I completed one assignment and did all my responses to my group except for one person's. I got a zero and lost a whole letter grade.
Was given really unclear feedback. When told to use a tutorial for one of our projects he gave us a website we had to pay for in order to view said tutorial. Unclear with directions.
He is the harshest grader I have ever come across, if you forget to comment on just one of your teamates assignment he will give you a 0%. he took off a small % of people's final grade for emailing him instead of messaging him on canvas. You can not afford to make small mistakes otherwise rip your grade. He's nice but a bad teacher. Dont take him!
Dr. Schbeeb was alright but definitely wouldn't take him unless absolutely necessary. His quizzes, 4 for online, are kinda tough because the information is hidden well in the notes but if you read them thoroughly then you should be fine. If you were to get anything lower then a B in this class that's just on you being lazy.
Avoid this Professor. His interest is not in the success of his students. A grade is meant to measure proficiency in a subject, but not his. Forcing me to retake course despite completing ALL work and demonstrating clear understanding of material, because I was a mere 1 pt from the required B. If you email him he takes off more pts. He doesn't care
Not too bad of a class, start assignments before the last day to account for any questions/problems. Good intro to learning how to Google/research on your own. The only major part that might give people difficulty is making a basic HTML + CSS website - I'd recommend following a basic tutorial online to understand. Ensure you read instructions.
I've cried so much over this class just because of the stress I felt while in it. However, he is the most understanding when you share with him your struggles. It makes me tear up now just thinking about how thankful I am for having been in his class and for strengthening my creative confidence. I wish I had taken more classes with him.
This class was very difficult. Not much help from the professor.
This guy WILL shape you to break into the industry. He gives excellent feedback and is very supportive when you explain your case well. You MUST work hard to earn your grade, as he essentially follows industry standards. He will assist you in making a kick-ass portfolio. Because of him, I have a job as a Level Designer for an MMO. "DO THE THING"
Not quite sure why people complain about Gideon. I took him for both Casual Production and Workshop in the same semester, and he was fine. Intimidating, yes; but you will succeed in his classes if you put in the work and "do the thing." Be the kind of team member you would want to work with (especially in Workshop). It'll help you in the long run.
He gives you hours and hours worth of material to go through and none of it is relevant to your projects. He assigns projects that require you to do things that he doesn't teach and then refuses to help you. There are no videos or lectures of him explaining how to do things, but 100+ pages of readings per week that you'll be quizzed on.
His directions are extremely hard to understand and vague, there are typo's in his examples he expects us to recreate, and then he grades extremely tough and will not leave any explanation as to why he gave you the grade?? So you can't even learn from what he deems a mistake. Worst professor I have ever had in my 6 years of college.
This class felt self-taught. Had to read 100+ pages of a textbook for each quiz. Projects were vague in description and required learning through outside sourcing. No explanation videos of his own to support the projects. He does have a discord for office hours and is often available, so thats nice. Definitely a class you gotta work hard in.
Take Shbeeb, Nuf Said. Shbeeb is the most HELPFUL professor I've met in my college career. He's caring, knowledgeable, and WANTS you to succeed He IS a tough grader (don't expect 100's), but he will give u every ounce of feedback necessary to make ur assignment an A Work Hard, Ask Him 4 Help, follow rubrics & u WILL Succeed No Questions Asked.
He's the best professor in the program, take him if you can. He challenges you with research oriented development assignments, but you'll be better in the end. His lectures cover the theory and principles of production, and the assignments have you put what you know into practice. He'll push you and in return make you into a better game designer.
Shbeeb is not a great professor, at all, although he does know his stuff. His Level Design class (3727C) is far from that. Can't finish PPs/lectures on time. He wants you to make a full game, mechanics and everything, then proceeds to grade off an imaginary rubric that students can't see. No room for creativity and/or error. Truly one of the worst!
Makes you wonder where your tuition money is going. Tutorials are great and save cash, but using them and getting a bad grade is frustrating when there are strict directions & zero feedback. If you don't tell me what I did wrong and why I was marked down, what are we doing here? I don't want to go to office hours every assignment to plead my case.
I wish I picked another professor for this class. His assignments are copypasted and include very specific formatting rules, some of which ironically have mistakes in them a student would be marked down for, and grading seems rushed. Don't expect explanations for grades you get back. Unpleasant experience overall.
Shbeeb is an incredibly smart professor who lacks the ability to communicate properly with his students. If you ask him a simple question he will give you a complicated answer. He tries to use big words to get his students to really think about the topics and assignments, but he ends up just confusing most of them.
Let me start this write-up by saying taking him in multiple classes was ROUGH, advise against that. I felt the burn of the stack pretty early on. But he was invaluable to making me become a better student. Do not anticipate an easy class if you've come from ones previous; be prepared to actually apply your skillset. Talk with him. Amazing person.
Level Design becomes more about code the further you go than level design. 3 projects: 1st is all about set dressing and lighting; 2nd is about coding movement and making a level based on that;` 3rd is about making 2 mechanics work in a level you create. Most students stop caring about the level design and just try to make sure the code works.
GOAT Professor, knows his was around the industry and just about every aspect of Game Design. People that are giving bad reviews need to understand that us Game Design students are 1 single step away from industry standard. We are between 1-4 years from being held to that standard. Take Shbeeb if you want to be prepared for the industry.
It's rather telling that officially listed criteria gave no directions and I was forced to ask around for help from other students and THEY barely understood assignments. Combined with vague rubrics and his refusal to accept redos, it is as though he sets students up for failure.
Worst professor I have ever taken. He brags about how he knows he has a bad reputation and how he loves it. I wouldn't take his class again. All of his tutorials are bad and 95% of them are outdated. I feel like I haven't even learned anything so far in this class. This class is making my college experience horrible.
Attendance being so mandatory was rough but his lectures are good so it's kinda worth it. Intimidating at first, but if you ask him questions he answers well, just tough to get past the initial spookiness. Only gripes were how few assignments there were and that I wished he gave slightly clearer rubrics since donkin' up can mess ya up HELLA bad.
Once upon a project dreary, while I ponder my Unreal level design query, While I sought to fix each error in my lore. Suddenly, a tapping sounded, Shbeeb's spirit came unbounded, knocking on my collision bounded SM door. With Unreal lore he implored, quoth the Shbeeb, "Do the thing" never more.
You will struggle in other classes if you take his computer as a medium, but will struggle with his if you take another. Goes against all the other professor's standards and requires the use of an engine you will be unfamiliar with unless you have him for every class. Grades harshly with a negative grading system.
Shbeeb teaches UE5. Which is not the norm for much of UCF's GameDev program (most profs use Unity). I like it but its not every1s cup of tea. That being said, his passion, knowledge, discipline, and amount of caring he has for students is unparalleled. He is very hard yes but he will prep you for industry. Many in industry share this sentiment.
Although Shbeeb is a tough grader and kind of intimidating, I have learned more in his class than my entire college career so far. You have to really put in the work in his classes, but he truly is getting you industry ready compared to other professors in this major. He asks for the minimum in his classes, but helps you reach beyond.
Shbeeb is the best professor in this program hands down. If you truly want to learn game design to an industry standard, take his classes. His courses are tough and he expects a lot out of you but you will learn so much. I personally felt like I learned more in the two semesters of workshop than I had in the entire degree. 100% the game design GOAT
Funny guy. Teaches level design very well, when the class is focused on it. The class is mostly learning Unreal via massive projects. The entire class is ruined by a combination of an overly stressful negative grading system and using Unreal over Unity, the engine taught at UCF as a prerequisite for the class and used in almost all other classes.
Shbeeb is one of the most knowledgeable Professors I've ever had. If you genuinely want a chance at making it into the games industry, his workshop class provides a great experience that will help prepare you in a lot of ways. I know a few people that get annoyed with his grading/critiques and yes sometimes it can be harsh :(.. Its the real world..
Shbeeb is a difficult professor, but in a way that is absolutely necessary to feel accomplished as a game designer. With him, there is constant honest feedback and critique- something I feel helped me and my workshop team excel, push ourselves, and rapidly grow as game designers. This is the best course I have taken at UCF, and I highly recommend.
He has a rather odd style of grading where you start the class with 100 and progressively get this subtracted from. Just be sure to do the work, write the replies, check the rubric. No matter how simple, there's no way back up once you're down. Otherwise, it's a pretty decent course, especially if you need an introduction to the concepts.
Ah Shbeeb, probably the most quirky professor in this program. Intelligent, sassy, interesting lectures, sassy, good feedback, sassy. If he doubled down on Hunter being his comedic relief/sidekick and had a yearning for something more in life... he'd be a good candidate for the next Disney Princess. Hell, he's basically that in this program. 10/10
Awesome professor. Need to actually put in some works to get good grade.
Attendance is absolutely mandatory as you can get a -476% in the class even if you submit every assignment with 100% success based on attendance alone. He is a helpful teacher for problems, but his grading system is insanity. Unreal Engine is a fun engine to play with, but the learning curve is steep.
You know that weird PS3 commericial with the crying baby? Shbeeb is the reason the baby is crying. In many ways he is like a PS3. His branding comes off as a bit arrogant yet innovative and well intended, yet sadly nobody can figure out his processor/brain that will most likely eventually be used in a military-grade supercomputer. 10/10
Shbeeb is an objective man in a subjective world. Unfortunately some subjects of his objectiveness feel negatively subjected by hus antics. My response? Do the thing and TMCC ftw.
Out of all of the courses at UCF Professor Shbeeb's level design course gave me the most knowledge & felt like the most in depth learning experience I had through out the entire Digital Media course. That said Unreal and his grading method are a stark contrast to the rest of the course. Blueprint guides could be more streamlined with better audio.
Shbeeb is like the Lorax except he speaks for Unreal instead of the trees. The dude here who said "Blueprint guides could be more streamlined with better audio" is right. It's almost as if he records em at 2am while trying to not wake his *checks notes* 5 kids. Adjust your OBS settings dude. 10/10
Do not take this professor for this class. He didn't teach us anything about coding and just linked a website with the codes. I've had to learn how to do everything by myself. He doesn't accept late work at all, and doesn't like it when people ask him questions. He's an extremely harsh grader as I failed a whole project because of one thing.
He doesn't give us any instructions how to code. He just tells us to figure it out ourselves and expects us to already know the stuff. Unless you're a coding professional do not take this class.
we're paying a lot of money for this education, and he often says “figure it out,” which is not helpful. I think it says a lot about professionalism when the professor spends time responding to comments on this website mid-semester when he could be helping students with this difficult class. wouldn't recommend :/
Shbeeb can come off harsh, but he's holding you to standards that are just higher than you'd expect. The rubric is there, his discord servers and webcourses are open too. Any confusion can be cleared up quick. Regardless of the course, the expert knowledge he gives out is not worth missing out on. I'm confident in finding a job because of the class
Shbeeb was a great level design teacher. He gave iffy feedback on assignments - but with so many students he can't comment on each one, BUT he does fill out the rubric. In class, he gives great feedback as we review students' work. He can come off as strict, but his standards are laid out bare - 12-15 hours outside of class and detailed assignments
No outline for the assignments in the syllabus or modules. Doesn't teach, just links a coding website. No lecture videos. Blames students for not contacting for help on a Week 7 announcement, yet he didn't put in any grades till week 6. It's embarrassing how unprofessional and rude he is, responding in a childish way especially considering his age.
Best professor at UCF
Reading through the countless other reviews (and the professor's insistence in replying to every single one that isnt a 5.0) should give you a clear view as to why Shbeeb scores low, but I'll give it a go. The class is entirely w3schools with supplemental assistance. I'm paying for a teacher, not help with online resources.
Shbeeb doesn't spoon feed you information. You have to actually put in effort and push yourself beyond to succeed in his courses; if you're not willing to do that, then you won't make it in the industry. You can't just simply do the work and move on. He truly cares and is willing to help all his students succeed if you put in the work and reach out
Lecture heavy, and I did not learn in this class
I think it speaks to someone's character when instead of taking any amount of responsibility, they reply to students on RMP (which in their own words, nobody really looks at). If you think your money or time has value then dont take this class. You can access W3schools for free without the issue of a professor who puts less than bare minimum effort
I signed up for Intro to Design Fundamentals and got HTML Bootcamp via W3Schools. Thought I'd be learning cool design, but I'm stuck memorizing divs and tags from a guy who thinks W3Schools is cutting-edge. Dude teaches like Google's search history is his syllabus. Send help.
It's been a year since I took a class of his, suffered because his grading, teaching and helping style is antagonistic enough to get tons of people to hate him, and he still hasn't changed his ways. I know you read these Shbeeb, and you have to know that you can't teach people if you aren't wulling to learn yourself.
The best thing I learned from this class was to ask for help. Not from Shbeeb necessarily, but from more approachable, yet knowledgeable individuals. The class is hard, even if you've taken DIG2000, but it's rewarding to stand back from each project and say "I did that" after finding the right resources to help you succeed. textbook is a great read
For a class where ALL of the assignments are coding projects he does not teach coding even a little (lone resource of a free code-teaching website). The quizzes were based on readings about design but also included coding questions. Says to ask questions but feedback is always vague and often passive-aggressive. Avoid if you can.
Coding assignments aren't hard but Shbeeb doesn't provide any assistance or resources besides some intro coding websites. When you ask questions about the projects his answers are sometimes very unclear and confusing.
If you don't have any prior experience in Html, this class can be extremely rough. However, you will know how to code by the end of this class. If you're looking for an easy class to take, definitely don't take Shbeeb. If you want to learn how to make websites, this is the class for you.
Shbeeb is easily 1 of the best professor's I have taken throughout my college career. He is not for the faint of heart. But if you put in the time he will help you reach new heights.
Not gonna lie, the dude knows his stuff, but I feel like I'm being mentored by a video game NPC that only speaks in side quest riddles. If I survive this class, I better unlock some legendary game dev loot because right now, all I've earned is emotional damage. He's pretty good though, 10/10
Shbeeb was excellent for Workshop. The game my team and I was able to make under his guidance was excellent because of how hard he pushed us. Gives the dad energy we all need in life, 10/10
He is unprofessional both in the classroom and on this website and is very full of himself. He knows what he's talking about, but you can't listen to him without wanting to claw your eardrums out from his attitude. Realistically, I would rate him 10/10 on knowledge and 0/10 on personality. Take at your own risk.
This is a professor who cares very much for the success and growth of his students. Yes, you will need to do your work and do it well, and he can be quite particular - but its on par with what should be expected of a 4000 level course. If you want to get a good portfolio piece out of this class, take it with Shbeeb.
I took Professor Shbeeb for Workshop and it was a very fulfilling experience. Lots of teachers in the major will keel over and give you full credit even if your work is dog shit but not this guy. He will pick your work apart but also provides probably the best feedback in the major. He is no yes man and I came out of his class better because of it.
This class is extremely time-consuming if you have no coding experience. The teacher does not provide any lectures, only one website that breaks down some ways to code. The professor does respond to emails quickly and is willing to help, but only if you reach out. Other than that, you are on your own.
The professor doesn't explain anything or explain why you got points deducted. If this is your first time coding don't take this class because you'll be doing everything all on your own.
Great professor. Just do your work well and you will pass. I learned so much from his class. Pretty funny guy too. When it comes to making the game, it's rough. Expect to spend more than 15 hours a week, especially near the end. Also, you're going to have teach yourself new skills. But you can ask around and many professors will help you.
Professor who comes off as harsh but really just cares about his students and the quality of work they produce. If you want to be as close to industry ready as possible take professor Shbeeb.
Very caring but not exactly understanding. Doesn't foster the safest and most non-judgmental environment. Very hard class and grading is almost a bit unreasonable. Course materials didn't teach me well. It's intensive, and you can become a great coder through it, but it might be the roughest class I've taken.
This was a difficult class. I was thrown into coding without a warning and the professor didn't provide much instruction other than a coding website which I found to be uninformative. Based off his responses to my classmates, he seemed to be unprofessional; responding passive-aggressively. I recommend you acquaint yourself with HTML beforehand.
Professor lacks empathy for his students and expects students to learn everything on their own through given resources. A professors job is to “teach” the information to the students and minimize learner frustrations. His open door policy when asking for help is subpar as he will give you resources to figure out on your own. No real guidance.
Professor expects class to magically understand coding practices in a fundamental course where most students don't have coding experience. He doesn't even teach it if anything, html, css, pretty easy to learn don't get me wrong. It's javascript that's the bit that would be frustrating. he does not like receiving feedback and gets quite offended.
This professor grades pretty fairly in my experience. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with javascript before reaching that part in the course as this portion is a little more rough. HTML and CSS concepts were easier to grasp. Ask him for help if you need it, since a lot of the learning will be on your own otherwise.
The instructor should reconsider their approach to teaching. Not just assign materials and expect students to figure everything out on their own. The opendoor policy for help was ineffective. Lack of empathy for students and rigid adherence to policy were disappointing. This class would benefit from a more supportive and human approach to teaching.
Very strict, because he genuinely cares. If you want the most out of your degree, take this professor. You will find many other reviews saying the same. If you just want an A to get your degree and move on, then definitely take someone else.
Shbeeb is a tough professor, and it can sometimes be overwhelming. However, he is very knowledgeable and genuinely does care about you as his sole purpose is preparing you for the industry. It's important that you attend his lectures/labs, watch all of his tutorials on unreal, don't fall behind, and plan ahead. Do this, and you will pass!
No care about well-being of students, pretentious attitude, talks ridiculously fast, unfair grading, unrealistic deadlines, intimidating to talk to him, let alone ask him for help as he will blame you for asking him for help, make you feel like you have no future in the field, and will kick you while you're down. Disgrace to UCF. Avoid this one.
Snarky attitude, can never be told he's wrong, always blames you, and isn't pleasant to listen to or be around. Couldn't stand staying any longer.
If you take this teacher, get ready to have mental anguish. He will just ramble in his lectures with no notes, and never gives explanation for deducting points unless you go out of your way to see him. I was a straight A up until this and even the B was like digging through the trenches.
Unbearable to talk to about any issue. Very defensive about everything. Don't respond to this saying the student is wrong and you're always right like you've done to many former students on here. Because the common denominator is definitely not you if all these students are against you. almost ended it because of you. never want to see you again.
If you take his class you're going to have a horrible time. all he does is ramble in lectures and he doesn't record them. You have no idea what he is saying. He grades with no rhyme or reason. H does not accept ANY extensions whatsoever even when you are ill.
This professor is a master at making competent students feel like failures. Lectures are incoherent, grading is cruelly arbitrary, and asking for help is treated as a personal attack. He is the reason students leave doubting their future in the field. If you want to be humiliated while working twice as hard as necessary, this is your guy.
Avoid this class at all costs. He makes you question your own abilities even if you're an A student. lectures make no sense, grading is inconsistent, and asking questions feels like a personal attack. Truly one of the worst teachers I've had.
if you value your mental health, avoid this guy entirely. He will belittle you, refuse accommodations, and make you feel hopeless. he will make you feel incompetent and demoralized at every turn. in the end i felt mentally drained and emotionally worn down in a way no class ever should
A professor should want students to succeed. This one seemed way more interested in asserting his authority than actually educating. If you value clear instruction, respect, and a supportive learning environment, avoid this course with this sad excuse of an instructor.
