Loved him! No curve though. Class is really fun, and he's hilarious. Make sure you go to class and read. This was my favorite class at Chapel Hill.
Awesome teacher! Difficult material, but what else would you expect with the human body. His speech is hard to understand at times but he does all he can to help you out. Overall this was one of my favorite classes at UNC.
This class is pretty hard but he is definitely a great teacher. He really cares that you learn the material. Just make sure you the information like the back of your hand. Would definitely suggest this class.
Prof. Shemer is one of the best professors I've ever had. Although the course isn't easy due to the breath of material covered, Shemer is very clear in explaining what you need to know. He's entertaining, keeps the class engaged and his powerpoints are very helpful. Definitely recommend this class! (but must you must study regularly to do well).
He is INCREDIBLE! He is so interested in the subject matter and he brings a lot of energy to the class, so lectures are a lot of fun. He talks quickly, so I would recommend a recorder. He also offers extra credit for a few people if they want to write a song about anatomy and perform it! He is always willing to give additional explanations.
An all around good fellow. He has high expectations not for the purpose of maintaining a curve, but because he is genuinely concerned if you do well.
Anatomy with Shemer was one of my favorite classes at UNC. It was entertaining, interesting, & funny & he was always available in office hours. Exams were challenging but it was clear what to expect; they were multiple choice, t/f, & fill-in-the-blank, requiring higher-level thinking. He scheduled exams so they wouldn?t conflict with lab exams.
Very difficult class, especially for someone who is not interested in science. However, I absolutely loved this class. I enjoyed going every day. His tests are very hard, but he's also clear on what to expect. Study hard and often, and enjoy his funny lectures!
He is very funny and a nice guy! His lectures are interesting, but his tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken. I would put in over 20 hours studying and just do decent on the test. Also you HAVE to go to class. He tests you on stuff that he just says in class and is not in the book or on powerpoints.
Shemer is passionate about what he teaches and truly tries to integrate the entire class in his lectures. But his tests are very unfair. I studied for weeks before and still did badly on them. He even said in class "I know that some of you are studying a lot and still doing bad. Don't be discouraged." Great, but my Gpa is messed up bc of this! :/
He is fabulous. hard and expects a lot from his students but truly one of the best at UNC. He is a must!
Passionate, interesting, knowledgeable, and humorous. His exam are fair but challenging. I highly recommend him for A&P.
Great professor. Very funny, loves what he teaches, crystal clear. His exams are not bad, makes you think and apply your knowledge, if you study his notes and understand the material well, you'll be fine
The class is hard, but very fair. Shemer is a great teacher and gives lots of resources for extra help. If you study the material along the way and don't wait until the weekend before the test, you'll be fine. Lab is worth a big part of your grade, so study hard for that too and you'll be fine
Shemer is one of the most intelligent lecturers I have ever had. He makes attending lecture interesting and worth my while. There is a TON of material, but that is with the nature of the class. He also only has two exams, and then the final, so there is more pressure on those two classes. You really cannot find a better professor for the material.
Dr. Shemer is the best professor I've encountered in the biology department. His lectures are clear and well organized, he's interactive with the class, and takes questions often and seems to really care if we understand the material. He gives a lot of practice for the tests and his review sessions are super helpful.
Great teacher! Shemer is very knowledgeable about biology and answers any questions you have really well or to the best of his ability. He assigns just the few pages of reading that you need and goes over topics in detail during class so everything that will be on the test will be explained in person. Take lots of notes during lecture.
Dr. Shemer is a genius and makes class really interesting. The tests are fair for what is covered in lecture, but sometimes the multiple choice is tricky
Great lecturer, who knows his stuff. If you're fascinated by the human body, this class will give you the satisfaction of deeply exploring its marvels. I must say that since 92% of your overall grade is test average, the pressure to perform is always there... which amounts to many hours of studying notes and textbook material.
Before I decided to take his class, I remember visiting this site. I remember many people saying that this was the professor that they had ever had, and now, I think the same thing. However, don't underestimate the work load. Anatomy in general is tough, but you are still expected to know just as much as any other course.
Gidi is great. His lectures are engaging and often funny. He explains things really well, and clearly cares about his students. He is easy to get a hold of during office hours if you need additional help, and he has review sessions before tests. Overall a really great professor!
Dr. Shemer is one of the best professors I've ever had. The material is extremely tough, but he makes it possible to grasp and gives lots of resources to help you really get the material. He is an amazing lecturer and absolutely hilarious. Although it's a tough class, I would highly recommend Dr. Shemer.
LOVE LOVE LOVE professor Shemer. He clearly has a passion for the material and teaching. He is a great teacher and is hilarious. His tests were so fair and tested you on accessible information-no surprises. There was in class participation, and a forum to asks questions, which he or other students answered promptly. --This made him very accessible
Dr. Shemer is the BEST! By far the best science professor I have ever had because he tests you extremely fairly. He is also super hilarious and makes the material interesting and enjoyable to learn. Take him!!
Funny, awesome, goes out of his way to help you. Best prof I have had at Chapel hill
Dr. Shemer is such a gem - there's a reason he is hailed as the best biology professor at UNC! His lectures are organized, well-thought out, and consistent. He is extremely knowledgeable about anatomy/biology. Extremely accessible outside of class. Lots of homework, but again, it's well-thought out and useful. Put in the work and you'll get the A!
Every bio major needs to take a class by Dr. Shemer at least once before they graduate. He's super passionate and very fair. Amazing class, and an amazing person. If his class is open, SIGN UP! He's the kind of guy you'll never forget and tell your kids about. He usually teaches a split class, so make sure to look for him in Connect Carolina.
Dr. Shemer is by far the BEST professor at UNC. PLEASE take one of his classes, he is tough but passionate and very helpful. Study hard and go to his office hours and you'll do well. Overall a wonderful instructor and even better human being!
Shemer is one of the Biology department's best. HIGHLY recommend taking one of his sections. There will be a good chunk of reading to do and he does use the active learning setup, but he goes very in depth in lecture on how what you just read applies to mol. bio and genetics in history and in the present.
You can tell that he is very passionate about Biology and a good lecturer but I did not have the same experience as a lot of the other ratings. I felt that office hours were not as helpful as others found them. I also felt that the tests were meant to be overly tricky and even after studying for days for exams I still did not feel they were fair.
In a perfect world UNC would fire most of it's biology department and have Gideon Shemer select replacements who actually want to teach. Take Shemer for any section he teaches.
As a biology major Ive been fortunate enough to have had Shemer in both Biol 252 and Biol 202. Hes really great at explaining complex material at an easier level. Memorizing the material will not take you far in his course. Youll need a deep understanding of what he lectures in class to be able to implement in his exams. LC questions are key!
As a Biology major, Shemer is the only reason I have decided to stay with my major. He is also the only reason my grade in Biol 202 was saved because the other professor (Garland) was not the best. Shemer really knows his material and is very good at explaining difficult concepts.
Dr. Shemer is definitely one of the best professors that I have had at UNC. He knows what he is talking about and is very passionate about teaching. I had a bad experience with a biology professor my freshman year so I was skeptical of taking this course with him. I ended up loving it and loving him. I highly recommend taking 252 with Dr. Shemer.
Professor Shemer was very passionate and did a good job of keeping students engaged. His tests are pretty difficult and tricky, so good study habits throughout the semester are crucial. He is pretty good at explaining material but sometimes moves a little fast. Challenging course but worth the time
Dr. Shemer is one of the best professors I've had at UNC, but the class is still very tough. He's pretty funny in class although serious in office hours. His tests are tricky and you really have to understand the material beyond basic memorization to be able to do well. Tests are mainly based on his PowerPoints with the occasional textbook detail.
Dr. Shemer saved my grade in this class. I was very worried after the first exam given by the other professor, but as soon as he started lecturing, the class became fascinating. He is able to break down complex topics, and his exams are very fair. I 100% recommend taking a class with Shemer at least once while you are at Carolina!
Shemer is invested in the material and making sure that the students understand it. He explains concepts thoroughly and asks questions that are relevant and useful in helping the students understand the material, but doesn't waste time in class making students do problems and talk them over with their peers, like most Biology professors do.
Dr. Shemer is an amazing professor. He is VERY enthusiastic, and you can tell he loves to teach. He really cares about whether people understand the material and makes his lectures interesting. That being said, his exams are difficult, and he asks mostly application based questions. Attending lectures is key!
Dr. Shemer is best professor I have had for a science class at UNC. His lectures are AMAZING (one of few professors who actually "teaches" the class - not a class where you have to teach yourself)- if you just record the lectures and listen to them again while studying, that should be all to get an A in this class! Very little use of the textbook.
Shemer really cares about his students. You should do well in the class if you pay attention and study. A study tip that helped me do well was recording his lectures.
For the love of all that is good, re-listen to his lectures, and take notes again. This is where most of the material on the exams comes from. Do practice questions. Dr. Shemer is really nice and I believe that he wants us all to do well. If you put in the time and seek out help from SI/peer mentors when you need it, you can get a good grade.
Shemer has a great understanding of the material and is able to clearly communicate with students what he is teaching. He uses lecture time effectively and uses relevant examples and poll questions. The tests reflect what he reaches in class, with no real surprises as long as you pay attention. I recommend shemer to everyone that needs anatomy.
Lectures are wonderful and entertaining, tests will challenge you but are extremely fair if you have studied. Largely multiple choice. You don't wont to skip lectures, and he encourages you to record them. I hope to take another class or two with him. The BEST Biology instructor at UNC, by far! It's a no-brainer choice.
Dr. Shemer is a hands down the most caring and amazing professor I have had at UNC. He not only is passionate about the material but attempts to make learning such a rigorous course fun. He even takes time out of his weekends to do Q&A sessions before the exams. Challenging course but if you listen to the lectures again you will do just fine!
Dr. Shemer is the GOAT, one of the best lectures, and most caring professors at UNC by far. If you have the oppertunity to take a class with this gem, DEF do. He has 100% changed my life while at Carolina, and even answers your frantic, mental breakdown emails at 2AM ( 5/5
Shemer gives good lectures but expects you to gain a very strong understanding of the material in greater depth than he presents in class. Tests are tricky and most of your grade. Shemer's style is geared towards someone who already has a stronger background in bio, physiology, or medicine. Presentation of the material was not straightforward.
I had hard time understanding his accent. The tests have small detail things he mentioned briefly during the lecture. definitely record his lecture and re-listen to it
Confusing slides, confusing accent, confusing wording in exams, writes questions that maybe only he can understand. Even his TAs think some of the questions in his midterms are too much and he insists to put it on. so.
Amazing professor and in my opinion the best lecturer in the UNC Biology department.
Has an entirely separate document to outline the enormous amount of assignments that have to be done using 4 different platforms. Most important information, i.e., questions on the test are said once in a one-line aside he mentions in class. No one WANTS to record lecture, but they HAVE to in order to do okay to catch those important tiny details.
Gidi Shemer is an actual blessing. He is a fantastic lecturer, and he really cares about his students. The test are hard, but they are in no way unfair or too tricky if you put in the work to study. There's lots of assignments and attendance is crucial but it's definitely manageable and it's for your own good. Highly recommend taking his classes.
Gidi is literally the best professor I've ever had - he's so knowledgeable about anatomy and he explains it on a level that anyone can understand. If you actually put effort into this class and studying, it will reflect in your exam grades. You can't blame Gidi if you don't do the best in his class - he gives plenty of resources to study for exams.
Amazing person! Very enthusiastic when teaching his favorite subject. I recommend recording his lectures if you want to do well in his class and go to his office hours. Exams are challenging but fair and always think of the "what-ifs" when preparing for his exams instead of relying solely on memorization and he does play on semantics in the exams.
DR GIDI IS THE BEST!!! His exams are fair as long as you record his lectures. Most of his test questions are basically mentioned during the lecture. He made Anatomy and Physiology such an amazing class. Definitely recommend!!!
Dr. Shemer was one of the best professors I have had at UNC! His passion for teaching exudes on to his students. One thing I would recommend to future students is that memorizing information will only get you a C to B range.. you have to think of the hypotheticals and 'what ifs' to score in the A range on tests
Dr. Shemer is AMAZING. He absolutely loves his students, and his lectures are actually interesting. He is so understanding, and when I was having medical issues while taking his class, he was more than willing to work with me. The class itself is not easy, but Dr. Shemer does everything he can to make it approachable.
Dr. Shemer is an amazing lecturer who not only really cares about the material, but also cares a lot about his students. His tests are pretty straightforward if you paid attention in class. He is very accessible outside of class and a great resource for anything biology related. I would recommend recording the lectures as he talks pretty fast
Dr. Shemer is as good as everyone says he is, or better. He is a wonderful lecturer and person and he clearly cares about all of his students both in and out of class. He prioritizes conceptualizing science over memorizing small details, which I loved. Plus he's hilarious. Highly recommend recording his lectures and going to office hours.
Great teacher. Kind of hard to understand, and talks very fast. You should audio record the lectures. Overall, a great teacher and a fun class.
For this class to have been a 300 person lecture hall, Dr. Shemer had a way of making everyone feel valued and important. His tests are pretty straight forward and his test saved my grade! Record his lectures and listen to them again later because a lot of the test questions are stuff he says in lecture verbatim!
Dr Shemer literally made me love biology again. His lectures are AMAZING, he keeps the students engaged in class, and he's very good at explaining concepts. Some of the test answers LITERALLY come from his power point slides, so review those constantly before an exam. His lectures flowed very well and he always made class interesting.
Shemer is an amazing professor and person. His class is hard no doubt and some of test questions can be tricky but he gives you everything you need to know. I could have done better if I would've started recording lectures at the beginning because once I started doing that my exam grades went up by a lot. He helps you love bio in a hard department.
Dr. Shemer is a great teacher when it comes to biology. You can tell that he is very interested in the topics he teaches. It is very important to grasp material in order to do well on they tests, but they are straightforward for the most part if you study well. He can be a little hard to understand at times, so record lectures if possible.
Awesome professor, his exams can be a bit challenging but his class is definitely worth taking!
Dr. Shemer is an amazing professor, which is sometimes hard to find in the STEM department at UNC. Although his exams can be challenging (lots of "what if" questions that make you apply the information), he teaches you everything you need to know. He is very upfront about his expectations and really cares about his students. Take a class with him!
Literally one of the best people at UNC. Trust all the great ratings on here because they are all true. Dr. Shemer is a fantastic professor and person, and it was an honor to be able to take a course from him. If you take something with him, show up to office hours!!! Even if you don't need help, have a conversation with this man. He's incredible
Dr. Shemer is a good person, he's really sweet and makes you feel welcomed. His lectures are good too, you just really have to do the work to pass the class and understand the material. The only downside is that his exams are so difficult and impossible to pass. They're also 84% of your grade.
I have no words other than to say how AMAZING King Shemer is. Makes a course like A/P very engaging. One of the best STEM professors that set foot on UNC. Though tests are weighted pretty heavily he explains concepts very well and is fully supportive of your personal and academic success in the course. The SI/PM were very helpful as well. TAKE HIM
Dr. Shemer is a professor who cares a lot about his students. Most of the grade comes from tests which are 78% of the grade. The final is not cumulative and all of the tests are based mostly on lectures. The tests are difficult but for the most part fair. Dr. Shemer is very knowledgeable and encourages questions.
Best professor I've ever had! He tells you exactly what you need to know, is specific in his answers, recorded class lectures so we could watch them after, and did everything possible to help us. The things he said weren't on the test weren't on the test--wild concept for professors.
Dr. Shemer is my favorite professor and his class was my favorite I have taken so far at UNC. He is very willing to work with students, especially during the pandemic. He is so kind and accessible. 10/10 recommend!
Dr. Shemer lives up to his reputation of being a good choice to take a bio class with. The only down side is that he is a fast talker, but then again you have a LOT of material to cover. He is very approachable outside of class and loves his (what if...) questions. His exams are straight forward STUDY THE POWERPOINTS and rewatch lecture recordings.
This class from the start is going to be hard regardless, but Dr. Shemer did amazing during lectures. He is very knowledgeable and quick with his communication. His guide-reading homework always matched with content taught in class, so READ BEFORE CLASS!!! Love his accent. This class is test-heavy with three exams and a final all together worth 74%
TAKE HIM. Best professor I have ever taken, and probably will take. Anatomy is a dense course but Shemer gives such amazing analogies and ways to remember the material. The course is exam-heavy, but he definitely prepares you if you do what he says to do. He writes study guides for each lesson and this course was my FAVORITE. TAKE HIM <3
One of the best professors Ive had at UNC, A&P is a difficult course due to a lot of material, but Dr. Shemer explains everything well, is very understanding, provides a lot of resources, and also doesnt make the course more difficult than it needs to be.
Dr. Shemer is the best professor I have had at UNC. He genuinely cares about his students and takes the time to make his lectures interesting. The class is very test heavy and goes over a lot of information, so be prepared for that. Take Dr. Shemer!
BEST professor at UNC!! I really loved the course. Readings outside of class were very manageable and Dr. Shemer made lectures very interesting and engaging! Tests make up most of your grade but early studying really helps to do well.
Dr. Shemer is an excellent lecturer. Some say that he writes tougher exams, but I did much better on his exam than the others. Outside of biology he has some interesting life stories which he tells well (this may be why he is such a good lecturer). Overall a good choice for BIOL 202.
Dr. Shemer is great. The class has a large focus on application over memorization, so make sure to understand the concepts and how they relate to each other.
Shemer is a really cool guy who has done lots of cool things but don't be fooled by his rating. This class is hard, especially if its your first second level biol class. His lectures are understandable but the tests are really hard and require deeper understanding and application of the course material. Definitely requires lots of hours studying
I absolutely adore everything about Gidi Shemer. He's a very compassionate and understanding professor while also trying to engage you in learning the material. You do have to put work in to get a good grade in this class as the exams are difficult and he has a specific way of writing questions. He also offered a virtual livestream all semester.
Shemer really tries to help students do well. Anatomy is always hard, but Shemer is a great option. He provides so many resources to help you do well, just make sure you actually use them.
If you can take BIOL252 w/ Dr. Shemer, then do it! Best BIOL professor I've had at UNC. The lectures are engaging. Exams are very fair, despite anatomy being a tricky concept sometimes. Watch the lectures and then review them, testing your knowledge as you go. Practice w/ the material and you will be golden for exams!
Probably the kindest professor I have ever had. I loved his lectures. HOWEVER, his exams were HARD. I studied for hours for every exam and my efforts were never reflected with my grades. If you take this course with Shemer, make sure to take other bio classes first, as he has great emphasis for higher order understanding of material
Dr. Shemer deeply cares about his students well-being and academic success. But, the course is extremely challenging, you cannot just complete the preclass work, you have to constantly be reviewing and applying. The practice exams were much easier than real exams. I would recommend taking sophomore year or later.
Dr. Shemer is one of the best professors at UNC. He is hilarious, an amazing teacher, and deeply cares for his students. However, the exams are very difficult and worth a large portion of your grade. Regardless, I would 100% recommend Dr. Shemer if you have the opportunity.
Very no-bullshit, though mostly fair. Goes out of his way to provide extra material and reading to help students. Class included a poster presentation which was assessed rather haphazardly, other than that very fair and excellent teacher. Returns exams extremely fast (later same day or the day after, for mostly non-multiple choice question tests).
Dr. Shemer is great. You can tell he knows the material from working with it hands on. His lectures are great! He assigns short GRQs and not that many mastering assignments, but the exams are HEAVILY application based. Definitely recommend office hours, peer mentor sessions, SI sessions, and/or peer tutoring.
Dr. Shemer is an amazing lecturer. His classes involve a lot of participation and problem solving. He prioritizes problem solving over memorization, and you get to have a notes sheet for all tests. His tests are worded a bit trickily but you get used to them over time. He is very good at explaining concepts one-on-one.
Deserves every bit of the praise on here and then some! A fantastic lecturer, whose humor, anecdotes, and slightly outdated pop culture references made lessons engaging! In a class of ~200, it seemed like he knew everyone's name by week two. Material was interesting and on par with the difficulty of other intermediate bio courses (take 103 first).
This is my second time taking BIOL252 (took it with Zwemer first time) and it has been so much easier with Dr. Shemer. Does have a decent amount of homework, but not an excessive amount. Lectures were very engaging. He made it clear what to expect on exams. Never really interacted with him individually, but he seems very caring for his students.
Dr. Shemer is fantastic y'all. He has amazing lectures and his homework load is super light (like maybe 5-15 GRQ questions). It is traditional classroom with him teaching the class. He is super knowledgeable, takes all questions seriously, and keeps it lighthearted. A few assignments besides GRQs but he communicates due dates very well. TAKE HIM!
Although this course was difficult, it has been a pleasure to be a part of. Dr. Shemer is such a great teacher--and even friend. He cares and will uplift you outside of class. Totally recommend, despite not receiving the grade I wanted.
Gidi was AMAZING! For all exams you can have a double sided cheat sheet and he posts the lectures after class for review. 75% of your final grade is tests so it is difficult in that aspect, but he makes the course as easy and fun as possible.
Gidi is the GOAT. His lectures were so clear and informative, and he is really funny. I found all the exams very fair. He doesn't give too much out of class work (especially compared to BIOL 103). He also records all the lectures which was clutch when studying. My only gripe is that every time I went to office hours, it was super chaotic.
Definitely recommend a tutor and go to class! Take notes! Start studying for exams well in advance. 75% of the grade is from the exams. Dr. Shemer is a great lecturer and definitely knows his stuff. He is very upfront that it is a tough class. If you put in the work you will learn a ton. It was a fun class but definitely hard. Super short QRGs!
Dr. Shemer teaches hard topics well, and returns to the big picture often to help students understand. He is understanding, and responds to emails about problems with assignments quickly. His lectures cover heavy scientific topics but he tries to make them interesting, straightforward, and he cracks jokes. Seems passionate and a student advocate.
Dr. Shemer is the best professor I've had. He cares deeply about his students and is always willing to help if you are struggling with concepts. His lectures are interesting and interactive. The exams are extremely difficult, so I suggest going to exam reviews afterwards to talk about what you got wrong.
Dr. Shemer is absolutely amazing. He uses lots of analogies to help ensure that his students understand concepts while also pausing after every concept to ask his students for their questions. He also encourages critical thinking during lectures and encourages the use of our many TAs.
all the homies love gidi shemer
Dr. Shemer is one of the best biology professors I've had at UNC. His lectures are entertaining, and he uses analogies and jokes to connect the material with students. He makes himself very accessible during class time to ask 1on1 questions, and his GRQs for homework are relevant and fairly short. Take his classes!
Dr. Shemer is amazing. He uses lots of analogies to help ensure that his students understand concepts while also pausing after every concept to ask his students their questions. He truly cares about each student and encourages students to come to him with any questions or concerns.
Good lecturer. I wish his exams weren't as detail focused. His notes have good examples, but he can miss the main point sometimes, brushing over it. Overall good, do reccomend.
I only have amazing things to say about Professor Shemer! He cares so much about his students, is a passionate and engaging lecturer, and gives fair exams. If you have a choice I would most definitely choose him as a professor :)
He's VERY difficult, definitely more difficult then i expected, he's a good prof tho
The GOAT, class was difficult but he does a great job lecturing and has done actual research on the topics he discusses. Would highly recommend. I look for his name for any Bio class I will take in the future.
a usual bio class, cheat sheet allowed but ofc not v helpful bc tests are 'conceptual'. annoying to get an A- but it's alright. he's a very sweet professor. attendance not mandatory but he's very into what he's teaching which makes it fun. i appreciate it. wish there were a little more buffer grades.
Pros: - Amazing lectures! - Gave us extra credit on occasion - ULAs are gifted teachers Cons: - HW was tedious... get ready to read - Exams were tough - His accent is thick and hard to understand at times (Love Gidi tho) How to study: Go to ULA sessions and Gidi Office hrs
Great prof, very engaging and is passionate about what he teaches. The only thing is lectures can be fast paced because of how dense the material is and his accent may require more focus to understand. Overall, the exams were very fair; mostly application based and had very little "tricks". Go to his exam review sessions!
Good prof and so nice but very hard class. You get a cheat sheet on every exam and 4 on final. Lectures were dense and detailed - completely flipped classroom so come in knowing the content. GRQs due every class. Exams were heavy on application, tricky, and made you THINK. Minimal-no partial credit. Don't miss a lecture, don't get behind.
Gidi is amazing! His class is very difficult and forces you to go beyond the basics, with many challenging concepts that take a while to grasp. That being said, he is super accessible outside of class and willing to work with you to help you succeed. Go to his office hours regularly and exam revision sessions and you'll be fine!!
Dr. Shemer is great! Exams are 75% of your grade and they are difficult, but if you study well, you'll do fine. Shemer is the best lecturer I've ever had and his jokes keep everyone engaged. Caring, funny, passionate, and organized. All of his classes are very similar- if you took 220 with him, everything is about the same besides the content.
As a senior bio major, I had somewhat fallen out of love with the subject due to my experience with the 200 level classes. After taking this class with Gidi, my love for biology has honestly been restored. I have never had a professor so passionate and caring who can also teach his ass off. I will miss his lectures and stories dearly.
I adore Gidi. He is incredibly talented at teaching, he really cares for all of his students, he's very loved by all of us. Cancer biology is a FASCINATING class. I highly, highly, highly recommend this course!!!!!!!! The 200 level courses at UNC and experience working in a research lab help a lot with succeeding in this class. Take 445 if you can!
This class is difficult, but Dr. Shemer gives you all the information and resources you need to succeed. It is up to you to study and pay attention in class, but if you put in the effort you should do well. Dr. Shemer really loves what he teaches and it shows in his lectures and lesson plans.
I absolutely love Dr. Shemer. I had him for 220 and 252 and while the classes are hard, he makes it easy to do well. His lectures are great and he explains things in a way that makes them really stick. Exams are weighted heavily and are hard; the final is hardest and can change your grade a lot so beware. Would 100% recommend for both classes.
Dr. Shemer is INCREDIBLE! His lectures are so engaging, funny, and genuinely interesting. He has been my favorite professor at UNC thus far. Don't get me wrong, this class is difficult and test heavy, but he makes it worth-while - and genuinely wants to make sure you understand what you're learning at a deeper level. Take his section if you can!!
Great class and professor, reading the text along is helpful, but Gidi covered everything in lecture. Content is difficult, however, the guided notes allow for a much easier time.
Dr. Shemer is such a good professor and puts harder concepts into real life examples to help his students better understand. However his tests are very challenging but you do get a cheat sheet but honestly it doesn't help much. Honestly, I would reccomend if you want a easier time take the other professor provided.
Dr. Shemer was one of the greatest professors that I have ever had. He is engaging, funny, and deeply passionate. His explanations were very helpful and every assignment had a clear purpose. I have seen a lot of reviews saying that his tests are very hard but don't let that scare you. They're fair and just require some studying. Gidi is the best!
Excellent lecturer. Exams are very fair but weighted heavily (75% of grade), so make sure you make a genuine effort to study if you do nothing else. Many things he says in lecture are not on the powerpoint, so it is very important to go to class to get everything. He records lectures. Outside of class assignments are easy and short.
Really good lecturer and he makes genetics more interesting than it already is. Exams were made up of questions that were mostly application-based, so its important to understand everything he talks about in lecture. He's very available outside of class and genuinely cares about all of his students.
I don't think he is as good as other people say. Many things that appear on the exam are not covered by the lecture. His review session did not help as he just answered random questions instead of having a clear structure. His accent is a bit hard to understand and he does not have bonus extra credit or roundup. He's funny but not a great teacher.
This class is really a chore and I did not find it interesting. Gidi seems very busy given how big the class is and his other many responsibilities managing the department. He feels unapproachable and a bit putoffish in his responses. The presentation slides were not easy to follow and the tests strayed outside of what was focused on in class.
Dr. Shemer is the best professor I have had at UNC. He is genuinely passionate about the material and loves what he does. 220 is average in difficulty when it comes to biology at UNC (basically just 103 with some added detail) but he is by far the best professor to teach it. His tests are fair and he lets you use a cheat sheet.
Such a kind professor, he makes it obvious he cares about his students. His tests are challenging, but if you use all the resources and rewatch the lecture videos you can succeed. He was accommodating and changed our test weightings since the first test average was on the lower side. Take with Shemer!! His lectures are enjoyable!!
Gidi is a really great lecturer and I enjoyed this course. Exams are 75% of your grade (3 non-cumulative midterms, 25% each, your last midterm is the final) and some of the questions are very tricky. I've heard that the other 252 profs are easier but Gidi is a really amazing guy so I'd totally recommend.
As much as I wanted to like Shemer, I wasn't a big fan of him this semester. His exams are crazy difficult and no matter how hard you try you always get a mediocre score back. There is no buffer in his grading system either. 75% are exams which puts a lot of stress on the exams. He is a decent lecturer but he needs to look out for his students more
Professor Gideon is intense but worth the effort. The material is challenging, so use all resources - lectures, office hours, and unstuck study. With dedication, you can crush this class!
I had Dr. Shemer for fall 24 and he is one of the best professors! He explains concepts in a way that makes you understand the full picture and how everything is connected. Exam content mainly comes from lectures, as he addresses scenarios that are similar to those on the exams. HW is light too. As long as you are attentive you will do great.
If you do not like lecturer type professors please save yourself and take a/p with someone else. He makes the content 10x harder than it should be and has me questioning everything because his questions are worded in a tricky way. He might be better for 220 (I have not taken it yet), however, I think there are better professors for biol252.
This honestly is the best class that I have ever taken at UNC. Dr. Shemer's lectures were more of a story where he made sure that he brought everyone along each step of the way. You can tell that he is so passionate about the material, and it is infectious. His exams were also fair. He let you bring in a 2-sided cheat sheet, and no trick questions.
He teaches very well, but his exams are 100% application and almost no memorization. To do well 100% rewatch every lecture, watch youtube videos, and do MANY MANY MANY practice problems
He is probably my favorite professor at UNC. His lectures are well structured, and he helps us understand with a lot of helpful analogies. He is also funny and kind. He wants us all to succeed.
Loved this class with him! Absolutely phenomenal lecturer and makes it really engaging. Tests are really heavy for your grade though so make sure you spend time getting familiar with the material.
Overrated. Lectures are good but densely packed, requiring rewatching. Exams are overly difficult—small mistakes are heavily penalized, and effort doesn't always translate to grades. Median unexpectedly high due to large pre-med group. Consider easier alternatives if aiming for a balanced workload.
Dr. Shemer is such a great professor for A&P! The class is very lecture-heavy, but he keeps the lectures engaging, and is excellent at creating analogies to help understand complex topics. He keeps his questions pretty straightforward, without really trying to trick you.
DR. SHEMER IS THE GOAT!!
This class is so exam heavy and he intentionally makes them very difficult. There's no curve and very few opportunities to get your grade up if you do bad on an exam. He's a good lecturer but that doesn't do much when one bad exam tanks your grade. I expected more from all of the reviews
His lectures are amazing, with good analogies and a straightforward way of teaching. Very deadpan, so his sense of humor that falls flat sometimes. His exams are hard, but he allows a cheat sheet, which balances things a lot. Pay attention to lecture and actually do the questions in class, and you'll be fine. Much more forgiving than other profs.
Dr. Shemer is tough but such a caring and funny professor. Makes an effort to connect with students and make the material relevant. Super interesting class and great prof!
Dr. Shemer is the best professor I've had at UNC. Took Garland for 103 and 240 and never quite understood anything, got C's in both. Something about Dr. Shemer's teaching style just made everything click for me in 220. Would definitely recommend taking classes with him.
Dr. Shemer is an amazing lecturer, very engaging. He presents material well and actually checks to see if people understand what he's saying. Super nice person, great lecturer!
dont fear dr shemer- took biol 103 and it was sooo hard but hes rly great 4 220. tests seem to have way more straightforward questions and he tries to make funny analogies (lectures are way less jam packed with time to discuss). The peer tutors and SIs really shined this semester as well! just listen to what he says verbally as slides r sparse
Teachers like him make it hard to want to stay in science. Don't get the whole cool teacher thing that many students have going on with him when he seems to look down to some students, clear bias. If you can take the class with someone else, regardless of who it is, get ready to read and review review review.
Dr. Shemer is an awesome teacher that is a genuinely caring and funny as well. His lectures are the best way to learn because he explains the concepts in a way that is easy to understand, and is very open to questions/feedback. The exams are straightforward and don't try and trick you, he actually helps you learn a lot. Great guy and great teacher.
This was my first bio course at UNC and I was worried. This class is tough but doable if you study and go to review sessions. Shemer is incredible and his lectures are engaging. Beware your grade is solely based on your test performance, no extra credit or curve. He makes you truly understand the material, just be ready to dedicate lots of time!
Dr. Shemer was an amazing 252 professor. Even though his exams were tougher than other professors' exams, if you put in the time, they will be totally fine. His lectures are very engaging, and he breaks down the content in a manageable way. I learned so much in this class, and I definitely feel like his lecture and exam style made this possible.
Good lecturer, tough tests, gets to know students (especially if you participate!)
I unfortunately don't see the Shemer hype. Before taking this class I was told by everyone I HAD to have it with him, but I think I would've been fine with someone else. I found his tests unnecessarily tricky at times. He seems like a nice guy and his analogies and commentary in lecture are helpful, just be ready to put a ton of work in.
Dr. Shemer is tough, this is the first bio class I really struggled in. I really enjoyed his sense of humor and he is a very king and caring person. Since he doesn't drop exams, it is very difficult to pull yourself back up from a poor test grade. He was very enthusiastic about the material and it translated to the students. Plus, he holds OH a lot
By far the best lecturer I have had at UNC. Exams were tricky, so if your GPA is more important than learning the subject definitely take it with someone else (this class ended my 4.0). Nice guy but definitely doesn't mess around and will not budge on grading policy, due dates, etc.
