Really tough tests, but entertaining to listen to and brings in treats for you! Helps you out so that you do well in his class.
Difficult material, difficult tests, but Simonett does whatever he can to help you understand. His lectures are very good. Also, very nice and interesting to talk to in an out of class. Brought donuts on several occasions.
He will do whatever it takes to make sure his students understand the material. He is very clear in his lectures, and he is a big fan of partial credit. A great professor
this is an excellent prof. The course is hard so you have to do the work but his tests/quizes are reasonable. His lectures aren't all that bad (not borinig even at 8:10AM) for math. He adds quirky things to class to keep students interested and he tells stories that are halarious.
Do not take this class unless you are masochistic! Mr. Simonett is a kind and courteous person. However, the class is pure hell. No matter how long you study for quizzes and tests, it will not help you. Tests are impossible, way too long, and very tricky. I beg all of you to please stay away!
What a horrible class,if you do bad on the first test, drop it imeediately, because it's almost impossible for you to get your grade back up. He does help you and stuff, but unless you ignore all of your other classes and study for his there is no way for you get a good grade. Don't take this****
you might wanna skip out on this one. while you hear other 175 classes breezing through the course a few people can be seen studying on monday night stressed out beyond anything. avoid him at all cost even if it means sacrificing your electives.
Dr. Simonett is a fantastic professor, and really nice! He makes sure that you understand everything in the class and the concepts behind it. He moves faster than other classes, but I learned more than my friends who had diff. professors. Sometimes he does random stuff, like bring in donuts or have people draw dragons on the board.
Let me convince you of something....This man, the Greek god ZEUS, is absolutely amazing. His tests arn't that hard, but he makes the quizzes too long and hard. He drops two quizzes. He also says squrred, instead of squared. His stories are hysterical!
Simonett is very sympathetic to undergrads and willing to help. However, his lectures aren't very well organized and he isn't very good at guiding students along to understanding. He can be kind of boring in class and the accent is a little distracting. The class itself isn't hard if you are decent at math and do homework occasionally.
He knows his stuff. He has a slight accent, but overall he's a good lecturer. He gives quizzes every Wednesday which are moderately hard. The tests are manageable. He's helpful outside of class.
This guy was terrrible. Avoid him at all costs. Other 175 professors are much easier. Attendance is mandatory and the class is at 8AM. He rarely does examples in class, and he teaches all theory and proofs. The tests are hard and the quizes which are every week are long and hard too. Stay away.
Simonett is a very good teacher, but his tests are impossible. The book is relatively useless, and Simonett likes to focus on proofs. The other 175 professors are easier.
Prof Simonett is one of the best math teachers at Vanderbilt. He explains the material well, and provides good examples in class. His quizzes and tests are kind of rough, but he is an extremely easy grader and gives a lot of extra credit. He does ask us to memorize a few proofs, but he always clearly tells us exactly which proofs to know. Take him!
Professor Simonett is one of the rare professors who truly cares about how his students are doing in and outside of class. He explains things well and will do anything to help you understand the material. His tests and quizzes can be difficult, but they are also fair. He is definitely one of the best professors in the math department and at Vandy.
Simonett was a fantastic teacher. The material on the test was difficult, but if you take notes and study, then you can get A's. The people who struggled were those who didn't come to class. All the test questions are from notes or homework. Sometimes he brings donuts... so that's nice
Attendance is absolutely mandatory (this goes for any Multivariable class, not just Simonett's). His quizzes are usually straightforward; tests emphasize theory and are more challenging. He was very approachable during office hours and he genuinely wants his students to learn a lot about calculus. He's a kind professor and will try to help you out.
Clearly enjoys teaching and wants to help his students. Approachable during office hours as well. That being said, his explanations can sometimes be unclear and it was difficult for me to do well in this class because I did not get a solid foundation of the material at the beginning of the semester. Tests are challenging.
Simonett is one of the better math profs at Vandy. If you seek out help even a little, he's there. Tests are pretty straightforward, but definitely not easy. That is, you'll know exactly what you need to study for each of the three tests and final. There' not much of a curve. The homework is really time-consuming so DO NOT start at the last minute
Ordinary differential equations are not fun, but Simonett very clearly enjoys the subject and teaching it. His office hours are very helpful and his grading is very fair. I always felt that I got the grade I studied for. His lectures are very coherent and focused and the homework actually helps you practice the processes he presents in lecture.
At First I put my focus in class on note taking on his lectures. I used these notes for the first test to study and got a D. It was after this I realized how unhelpful and incoherent his lectures were, and that studying online and the textbook was the way to go, and got a 90 on the next test. Also not helpful in office hours. Have to self teach.
He gives pretty clear lectures and tries to focus on concepts rather than memorization, which is nice. His tests are always just a little to long to finish in the amount of time we have. The biggest downsides are that he assigns a few hours' worth of mandatory hw every class, and stops class to interrogate anybody who walks in even 5 minutes late
The class is heavily based on lectures and homework problems. His lectures are interesting and well taught. He assigns a few hours of homework a week, but the homework problems are almost exactly paralleled on the test. Go to class and do the homework and the class should be easy.
He teaches in a very standard lecture style where he covers one or two chapters of the book. Attending his lectures are not necessary (read the textbook), but he assigns a large amount of homework. The professor is very straightforward with his expectations on tests and won't throw curveballs. It may be a little too straightforward for some.
Professor Simonett really cares about his students. He is very organized and I thought he was very easy to understand despite his accent (he's from Switzerland). This class is definitely hard but he is extraordinarily helpful. He gives a lot of homework but that helped me learn.
Dr. Simonett loves teaching and you can definitely tell by his teaching quality. His tests are straightforward and he wont test you on any concept that wasnt in the homework. He is one of the nicest professors Ive had.
I enjoyed being in Dr. Simonett's class. He gives a lot of homework and his tests are lengthy for the time given, but he taught the material well. He is a bit soft spoken and has a foreign accent, but he's easy to understand nonetheless. He was always very nice and obviously cares about his students.
No final, so the three midterms count for a lot-- and they're hard. this prof practically only tests knowledge/memorization of proofs/theorems. Gieri is an extremely nice and understanding guy, but he is definitely not a great professor. Even my friends in my class who were math majors struggled to get anything higher than a C in this class.
No final, four midterms, which are heavy proof-based, but you can drop the lowest one, which means that if you do well on the first three, your grade is guaranteed almost one month earlier before the end of semester. He gives a lot of homework and grades them strictly, and homework counts for a lot. In general, it is not hard to get A in his class.
Prof Simonett gives you a TON of homework but its OK because its worth 40% of your grade. He is great because he gives out these study guides before each test and if you know each topic you will do very well on the tests. He doesnt try to trick you and teaches the material in a super accessible way. Hes also really nice! Will take again for sure
Dr Simonett is extremely organized and caring. The lecture follows the textbook, but beware of alternative proofs and some extra materials he throws in. He tests you on how familiar you are with the course materials and does not ask for too much ingenuity. HWs are intensive, but reasonable. One of the best 3100 instructors at Vandy so far.
Unreasonable amount of proofs for a methods-focused class. Spends too much time in class on proofs instead of going through practice problems. Weekly homework takes a while, but is worth 25% of the grade, which is nice. Tests are tough (he thinks a class average of 80 is good), but he provides helpful study guides (study them religiously).
Prof. Simonett is a very kind man who clearly cares about his students. He is also a pretty good lecturer. That said, the course is very difficult and a lot of the material is proof-based and abstract, even though the course title hints at applications (of which there are few.) 3 midterms (75%), homework (25%), no final. Overall, solid choice.
The best, and nicest, professor I have ever had. Goes over concepts slowly and deliberately, and makes an effort to make sure everything is understood before moving on. I never felt like I was playing catch-up. He cares about YOUR success, and he is always willing to go over HW/tests and sometimes give extra points here and there.
Amazing and Caring prof. Hard class but he genuinely wants you to learn and understand the material. I had some special circumstances this semester and he was willing to meet with me outside of class and office hours to help get me back on track. Best math prof ive had at vandy so far
Gieri Simonett is the man. Lectures are pointless to attend. I ended up losing knowledge compared to when I entered on some days. But he gives you everything you need to succeed. Just follow his study guides and you'll do well.
Dr. Simonett is the best math professor I've had at Vandy, and it isn't even close. Exams are straightforward, and he gives study guides outlining topics to look over for each of them. He genuinely cares about all of his students, inside and outside of class.
Professor Simonett is easily one of the kindest people at Vanderbilt. His lectures are easy to understand and he genuinely cares if students understand the material or not. He gives lots of homework but his tests are straightforward and he wont try to trick you.
You can tell he really cares about his students. This class isn't necessarily easy, you definitely have to put in the work however, he is a very organized and clear lecturer and easily accessible outside of class if you ever need help.
Professor Simonett was amazing. I genuinely think having him as a professor is the reason I didn't drop the class during the first week. He makes 2300 extremely manageable and genuinely wants his students to succeed. The homework he gives is also extremely helpful.
Prof. Simonett was an inspiration for this difficult class, willing to curve tests if they were too difficult, and made the final optional for those content with their grades. Truly cares about his students and their learning. Highly recommend, may be more theoretical in MATH 2300 than strictly necessary.
One of the best choices for 2300. Really helpful inside and out of class, and he is very straightforward in what he expects for each test. Paying attention in his class is more important than other math classes, however, as he highlights different methods for sketching/parameterizations than the textbook that he expects us to follow on the test.
Probably the best choice for MATH 2300, his study guides are extremely helpful and I do recommend looking over them thoroughly. It is important to pay attention especially if this is your first mathematics class at college. The homework is a lot but it is very useful for the exam.
Professor Simonett cares about his students a lot, however, he is incapable of recognizing that students have varying abilities in math. Took this class expecting a good professor, I was severely disappointed. However, if you have taken multi before don't worry about it.
Not too bad if you've taken multi before but really really hard if that isn't you.
Pretty clear what he wants on exams, they are still really hard and his grading is tough. Not really any curves.
Simonett is a decent lecturer, though he spends too much time on proofs and not enough on practice problems in class. His study guides are pretty useful. He bases exam questions almost directly from HW questions, so DO THE HW (even tho it's optional). Don't show up to class late consistently or else he will call you out in front of the class
Professor Simonetts class is very difficult but he is there to help you through it. Test are the main component of grading and although there arent many curves, they are fair and give you the chance to succeed. Very caring, very personal
Dr. Simonett is a really passionate teacher who cares about his students' success. The expectations for the class are very clear and tests are hard but very doable. Homework is optional, but required to do well on the tests. Thus, if you are not very self-motivated/organized and don't stay on top of the homework, you may struggle.
His lecture is clear. Homework workload medium. Definitely not harsh at grading( calculation errors weigh 1 point on test or so). Test question types are specified and practice question demoed in class. Only issue is that you have to go to proof for theorems urself: he only addresses the most critical ones. Do the HW and I think A is pretty easy.
1 of best teachers Ive had! 2300s tough but hes by far best prof for it. Great person, really cares abt his students. Hw s optional but dont be lazy- tests resemble the hardest hw probs. GO TO OFFICE HRS. He is v accessible to students. If you like math u will love his class. PS Im a freshman. Nobody in my class had taken multi before.
FAVORITE TEACHER
Hard class but fantastic Professor
Simonett makes me love math. Nicest most caring Professor while also (rightfully) expecting the best from his students
100% best Professor for 2300
Any negative reviews are definitely just people who do the bare minimum in class and still expect an A. Simonett cares abt his students are wants them to succeed but u do (obviously) still need to work hard. Tough class great prof
Definitely the best professor for 2300. Hw is not graded but prepares you well for tests. He posts a study guide for each test outlining what you need to know. Lectures are clear and he doesn't move at too fast of a pace. As long as you study for the tests and have some interest in math you can get an A. -Freshman who never took multi before.
Simonett is such a caring professor, but you can't expect to just show up to class and get an A. The homework is optional, but definitely a necessity if you want to succeed in the class. Go into office hours often with any homework questions, or even just to check the answers for even numbered problems. Get to know him - he's so kind!
Professor Simonett is a great lecturer and cares about his students. He gives clear proofs on the concepts in class and grades his exams loosely. HW is not required and the final grade depends on 4 exams. Also don't listen to those who say you need previous experience--Multivariable Calculus is hard but manageable if you attend class and study.
Professor Simonett is extremely caring and passionate about Multi. Do the homework and stay on top of the material and the tests will be fine. Lectures are great but very conceptual so the hw is important to get practice doing problems. Go to office hours because he is super helpful and is also a really nice guy! -Freshman with no prior Multi class
Best MATH2300 professor! Homework is optional, but you should do it because a lot of the test questions are really similar. Go to office hours because Professor Simonett is really helpful. (I had no multi experience before)
Great professor - my favorite math professor so far! He is helpful, his lectures are clear, and he says what to expect on tests. He never tries to trick you, and his grading is very reasonable. Multivariable calculus is not easy math but if you do the homework and pay attention in class you will be fine. Professor Simonett wants you to do well!
This was a very difficult class for me as a freshman, yet despite not doing well in the class, it is clear professor Simonett is a great professor. Definitely go through all the ungraded homework and give the study guide an in-depth look. His exam averages were all usually in the high 80s, so most students do pretty good.
Professor Simonett brings an amazing attitude to class. He cares a lot about students but requires significant work from them as well. Four tests determine your entire grade, so there isn't any room for error. Homework is optional in name only. Always had an A+ in Calc 1 and 2 but multivariable was much more difficult and I got my first B or C ever
Hard prof, nice but difficult
Simonett is the sweetest prof I've had and genuinely cares about helping his students succeed, but he expects you to work incredibly hard to get there. PAY ATTENTION TO STUDY GUIDES for exams, go to office hours. HW is not graded but necessary to pass exams. You'll come out of the class with a good understanding of multi.
2300 was super hard for me, but Simonett is definitely the best professor to have for it. The class is crazy difficult. Do the homework problems to study for the tests. Simonett is the nice prof I have ever had. He is so invested in his student's learning and met with me every week in office hours. So so kind. Great guy, horrible class/material.
Simonett is really an amazing professor! He makes his lectures really easy to follow and he gives super helpful study guides before each exam. He gives a lot of optional homework (sometimes even before he finishes the material) so studying outside of the class is also very important!
Overall good professor. Class material is tough but he generally explains it pretty well. Reading the textbook will help with understanding but is probably not that necessary since he explains stuff decently in class. Definitely do the optional homework because you'll fail otherwise. He's very clear with what he wants you to know for tests.
Professor Simonett's expectations are very straightforward: for every test, you are expected to memorize every theorem, proof, and definition from the chapter. Weekly problem sets are extremely difficult. Made the class way harder than it needed to be-- the other 3100 prof gave take-home tests and let students redo HWs for a higher grade.
Professor Simonett is an amazing math professor. All of the lectures are clear and he makes complicated concepts easy to understand. The class is also pretty generously graded (50% of the score is based on HW). The weekly problem sets teach you as much as the lectures. He's not very accessible for office hours, but the TA's office hours are great.
This class is really hard. Be careful lol don't get stuck in it like me
2501 is a very challenging proof-based and content-heavy class. A lot of people, myself included, had trouble adjusting to the quick yet rigorous pace of the course, but Professor Simonett made this transition possible. He was always very helpful during every office hour and clearly cared about his students well-being. Take his class if you can!
I took the 2500/01 freshman track and although it was a rocky path at first, it was definitely a worthy challenge. The material is very packed and abstract, but Dr Simonett did his best to set me up to succeed. In terms of grading, you need to earn the points but he is generous overall. Is accessible and really cares about his students. Take him!
If you're a freshmen able to take 2500/2501, its an amazing opportunity that will literally change how you think about math and prepare you for any challenge thereafter. Gieri Simonett is definitely the right professor to teach the class.
Prof. Simonett is great. The classes he teaches are tough so naturally not the "easiest" professor but he does a great job lecturing and assigns only necessary homework. If you dedicate yourself you can do well in his class. I would say to take advantage of his study guides (they're typically very representative of the tests) and the homeworks.
Poor lecture engagement and frustrating to talk to
Writes on board so fast and runs very mid office hours
I got horrible feedback, self taught the whole course to myself. Hopeless useless prof
Multi is a tough subject, but Dr. Simonett makes it really manageable. The tests questions mostly come straight from homework so just study the homework to do well. It is clear he really cares about his students and wants the best for them!
Professor Simonett was excellent and knew the material. He was accessible to students and wanted to see every student succeed. The class contained three midterms and a final, with optional homework questions integrated into the exams. Professor Simonett was fair with grading and provided study guides for the tests. I highly recommend him for multi.
Prof. Simonett has a calm and collected demeanor. He is a good teacher and is very patient. This class is difficult if you don't keep up with homework (which is not graded). The consolation is that the final exam score can be used to replace one of your previous midterms. Prof. Simonett will always make time for you and address your needs.
2500 is incredibly hard, but incredibly worthwhile. Simonett gives great lectures, but still expect to read from the textbook A LOT. His office hours are very good, and grading wise the class gives you a ton of cushion with HW being 55%. Don't be scared to take this course but be ready to put in more effort than classes like gen chem require.
While MATH 2500 may seem daunting at first, I would encourage anyone interested in the more rigorous side of math to take the course. Professor Simonett is a great professor and is very helpful in his office hours. I would also highly encourage anyone taking MATH 2500 to work collaboratively with their classmates as well.
2500 is a rigorous but very rewarding class if you are interested in pure math. Homework consists of one proof-based problem set per week, and collaboration with classmates is encouraged. Simonett is such a nice professor. He gives great lectures and tells hilarious stories. His office hours are very helpful.
Prof. Simonett's lectures are very clear and he lets you know exactly what he wants you to master. The course itself is not easy and definitely takes a lot of time to learn, but Prof. Simonett can give you a very clear direction. He is very kind and caring.
very caring prof who truly cares about the well-being of his student. a good option to take if you're taking 2300. not very accessible outside of class so try to ask questions in class and make some friends u can go to
Very good and nice professor. Doesn't grade hard, but that doesn't make the class easy. Lots of work but definitely worth it.
This professor is truly a great person and genuinely cares about his students. He teaches extremely difficult content, which makes it difficult to find this class easy, however if you go to class, office hours, and do your homework, you will find it possible to succeed. He encourages collaboration on homework, which helps immensely.
This coming year will be his last one, so 100% take him if you can. The class is very hard, but it is not graded hard, and Professor Simonett is easily the most caring Professor I have taken.
The class is challenging, but if you put in effort, it's definitely possible to succeed. Professor Simonett cares a lot about his students and making sure that we understand the content. I would highly recommend taking him!
