Very good teacher, very hard subject. She makes it easier by giving practice tests before each regular exam. STUDY THEM!! Those practice tests are your lifeline. Otherwise, a tough subject made easier by a good curriculum design.
Good teacher. She explains material well. She gets a little bogged down in lab though. I'd take her again.
She is NOT a nice person.
I had Dr.Ray for lab. She seems more of a lecture teacher. She gets really sidetracked in lab and doesn't have time to answer your questions. I would recommend her only if you are a self-learner and require no help. Otherwise switch teachers!
I had her for a chem lab. She wasn't available for help, and answered questions abruptly and shortly. Nice lady, but difficult class. She is a good teacher if you don't need much help in labs.
she is a okay teacher. she will help you when you are really in a dead end but beside that....she is not a good teacher.....her lab lecture is fast and hard to follow. it would be nice if she can show us how to do the lab.....but overall......just do wat she put in the notes and you are fine. i didn't pay attention in class and had all my lab done.
she's a good lab professor. You'll be fine if you take lecture notes (guides on how to do the lab). Quizzes are easy and let's u know in advance when it is and what's going to be on it. She's very helpful and thorough if students have problems. I'd recommend her.
Horrible teacher. Reads directly from her powerpoints and doesn't teach. She never has time for questions. If you would rather teach yourself then by all means take this class. You don't even need to attend class because it doesn't help. Just stay home and study.
everything on powerpoint
Was helpful when she had the time. Constantly rushed the lectures and went over procedures instead of printing them out ahead of time. Lab was hellish (rushing and limited make-up sessions). I always used gloves but got silver nitrate on my hands twice due to other students who couldn't clean up their messes. It wasn't used in my expts.
Dr. Ray has a good heart and does a decent job at helping. However, she is very scattered at times and not well organized in the labs. Her english is crystal clear which is a plus for a GSU professor. She is very through in helping people during office hours. Unfortunately that results in LONG wait times. She can be rude at times. But overall kind
She was hard! She made the lab work so tedious and put so much pressure on us for the lab report! She did give us extra exams to help our grade but dont take her class if you want a good lab grade
don't attend this class, she is cold and robotic - memorizes everything from lab handouts and just spews it out verbatim at a pace of 300words per second. good english though as opposed to other science teachers. overall she is 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best. I was on my way to getting an A but because I failed her lab i got a B+!
She is not a good teacher, as a chem student you need to be taught the material and all she does is read off her slides, this all she does in class. Her exams are super hard and sometimes she chooses the most detailed and picky thing for a lot of the questions. Unfortunately, she is the main teacher to teach this course but BEWARE!!!
After class review sessions lead by Dr. Ray and getting old tests make it very possible to get an A+
The most boring professor in GSU. Get old exams, do the practice exam she posts up and study the notes because going to her lectures will NOT help you at all. I barely went to her class and it's better to take Molecular Cell before taking her class because it will help you out. You have to be hooked up to a caffeine IV to stay awake in her class
Had her for Lab and she was much better than the lecture instructor. A bit scattered and talked a mile a minute but her lab was straightforward, so were her tests. She told you what you needed to study. I liked her as a lab teacher.
Had her for Lab, went out of her way to keep up with all students, even ones that weren't doing well. She had good powerpoints for Lab and was very patient with students. Lecture is very fast, lab time can be hectic. She will help you be a good at lab
Get your hands on the old exams (there's plenty being passed around) and study the slides. Don't be an idiot and be able to comprehend some pretty basic concepts you've already learned from Molecular and Orgo. Book isn't necessary. Easiest A+ I've ever gotten from a CHEM class.
Probably the best teacher I've had at Georgia State. I've only been here 2 semesters, but still, Dr. Ray is great. She gives you more than enough opportunities to succeed in this class, though it is a lot of material.
An awesome prof who is willing to help students with respect to the questions as well as with grades..i recommend you attend review sessions...attend all the class periods as she gives out signing sheet randomly...n the most imp part, attendance helps a lot at the end as it can boost you up one letter grade..wht else we need?
I had her for lab. She was unapproachable when I asked her for help. Most of time she brushed aside or disregarded my questions so I never really got answers. She isn't a bad teacher though. If you have simple questions, I would talk to the TA's before approaching her. In the end, I ended up with an A+ in chemistry, so I can't complain.
Probably the best teacher I ever had so far!!! she is very clear and organized. Her power points are so comprehensive that you won't need to open the book. I made a mistake buying the book because didn't use it even once. she is very respectful and knowledgeable. make sure you review old exams
I had Dr. Ray for the lab in the summer. The lab felt really rushed. You've to run behind her to get help. She tries being helpful but she does have an attitude if you don't get it immediately. Her lecture printouts are messy. You can't really ask her questions before class and after class she was in a hurry to get you out.
Dr. Ray is very clear in prelab. As long as you listen, you should have no problem completing the lab assignments. It is impossible to ask questions though, she always seems to be busy. However, I thought she was clear enough in prelab that it wasn't an issue. If anything, I think she takes too long making everything clear before lab.
She gives ppts with some empty spots that you fill in class. ALL her test questions are from her ppt. Very straight forward and lets you know what you will be tested on. If you got through Orgo 2 unscathed you will get through Dr. Ray's class. But study, study, study to get an A+. All her Quizzes are on D2L and tests always MC 40Qs. Final is 60QS.
Her tests come from her fill in the blank slides of her powerpoints. Highly recommended for Biochem 2. You do not need the book, but I would buy the workbook so you can ask her questions.
She makes CHEM 4610 as painless as possible. The secret to an A in this class is to continuously redraw all pathways over and over . Four exams and a final, in which the lowest test was dropped. Have a study group, it helps!
She is super picky and tough ! If I knew her before this course, I never take my course with her! Her teaching is great, but she is not pleasant at all !!
She is very direct and gives you all the information that you will need. Always have lab book ready or you will fall behind. She has make up lab days scheduled in the syllabus if you start to fall behind during experiments, but you want to work as efficiently as possible. She is very clear about answering questions, but many students crowd her.
I love Dr. Ray!! She is very clear and wants you to pass with flying colors. Lab was very easy for me. I always did my procedure and notebook setup beforehand and she clarified any questions I had by explaining the procedure before lab. She is available for help in her office hours. Particular in what she wants, but she's a wonderful teacher.
She is sweet , but Hard professor to get in touch with as well as In lab. The TA's are okay, but not too much help. No tests expect final exam, there are quizzes. Make sure you read and understand lab instructions given, or else you will not do well. It's a pass or fail class
So I took Dr. Ray for lab this Fall. I don't know my grade but I did decently well in the class (lecture + lab) as a whole. Dr. Ray is a clear teacher, but 1211 lab is extremely stressful and she can sometimes be intimidating (not really her fault but the way is structured). She is not that bad, so don't worry if you have to take her.
Everything you need to succeed is in the highly detailed powerpoints she uses in class. For tests, I just studied those and found them easy. She goes over things multiple times and words them in ways that are easy to understand, even if the subject can be complex at times. She's great at getting grades back quickly and gives lots of resources.
Good professor. COME TO CLASS. Her powerpoint notes are fill-in-the-blank style. There are a lot of slides so get ready to read and don't put it off. I only used the textbook for the practice problems tbh (do them!). Easy online quizzes. Some people don't like her because she talks/moves fast, but this didn't bother me. Biochem is pretty cool :)
If you're not a powerpoint kind of person, I don't recommend taking her class. Writes a lot on the whiteboard, so if you're nearsighted, don't think about sitting anywhere beyond the third row. Doesn't use a mic either, so DO NOT SIT TOO FAR!!! Info heavy, but it's biochem; what do you expect? Speaks really fast so you better record her lectures!
Biochem 2 is much harder than Biochem 1, so don't think you'll be fine if you did okay in Biochem 1 with her. Lots of information, all powerpoints. Graded the tests (MC and 4-5 pages of short answers) way harder than needed. Her tests had confusing phraseology and the questions can be vague and can have more than one answer.
She explains things extremely well, but you have to concentrate in lecture bc there is so much content. She is very powerpoint heavy but once you get the rhythm, it isn't so bad. If you're a chem major, take CHEM 3400 and BIOL 3800 before this class (both help a lot and save you time). Attend all lectures (it will pay off in the end).
I had her for lab. She gave quizzes near the middle of the semester and the final exam was similar to it. The labs were difficult and the TA's weren't too much help, but she allows office hours to catch up on things you need help with. Labs can be complicated if the calculations are wrong. She gives a lab handbook and lab instructions for each lab.
NEVER responds to emails. Sounds condescending sometimes. Not sympathetic w/ COVID. When people attend class virtually she can't stand it, no matter the reason. Lectures are strictly ppts so if that's not your thing don't take her. Achieve quizzes are much easier than what in person exams are. AK Lectures on YouTube is whats getting me through this
Powerpoints are overcrowded and she has absolutely no organization in her outlines and presentation. Atrocious lecture format where she provides "fill in the blank" powerpoints. So when she moves too fast, doesn't finish the lecture, or forgets to come back, you essentially miss that content because she rarely posts the answers.
Ok so boom: There are only weekly achieve quizzes and 4 exams. Only one exam gets dropped. Everyone must take the 4th exam. She doesn't really care for her students in the way a professor should. Not encouraging at all. Speeds through the lectures ppts, so its up to you to go back and understand it all. I do not recommend.
Please take this class on a light course load if you are. If you want an A, expect to dedicate 2-3 hrs a day to this class. Fill in the blank PPTs; not a fan bc missing a lecture means you can't learn the content as she never posts the answer slides. USE AK LECTURES!! Quizzes are easy points. TBH, exams aren't as hard as orgo.
Her powerpoints are all over the place and very busy. Use VERY tricky wording on assignments and would always blame students for failing the tests (which occurs very often). She would also sometimes get lost when explaining something important, and she also lectures till the day before the test (no class review). The exam is 90% of your grade.
She was an extremely inconsiderate professor with no empathy. What kind of teacher hosts lectures on new content TWO DAYS before the FINAL exam??? The workload is insane and it was clear that she had no idea how to properly plan her semester. Lecture sessions were hard to decipher and she had an unnecessary attitude when asked for clarification.
She did zoom for ppl who couldn't come in due to COVID and she HATED it. She would mute herself & when was asked to unmute, she would roll her eyes. Each slide in her lecture is crammed with words & pics - not organized. Shes v condescending. The class avg per exam was 50-60% & she thought that was good just to make herself feel like a good teacher
Dr. Ray is a solid choice for biochemistry. The course is hard because of the amount of content biochem has but she goes over everything in her lectures/slides. On tests, I never saw anything she didn't go over. She also hosts sessions outside of class you can get more clarification on. She had practice exams which are similar too.
(PART 1) So I'm going to need a few parts to give you a brutally honest review of Dr. Ray this semester. She was my only option for Biochem so I had no choice but to take her and survive her class. Content wise biochem is generally a difficult class and there is ALOT of information. So get ready to spend ALOT of time studying if you want to do well
Biochem is a very tough subject. It can be nerve wrecking thinking about taking a course like this. Unfortunately, Dr. Ray is not going to make it any easier for you. She's a professor that will introduce all the material needed but, It's up to you to really grasp and teach yourself the concepts.
PT 1: I want to give a full review so u can know the class youll be takin. We only have quizzes (online), 4 exams, and a final. So it can be fatal if you fail one exam since there is nothing to rely on. Class is pt grade system, so quizzes barely count (prob since they're online) & exams (F2F) weigh heavier than u think. Txtbk isn't mandatory but..
Despite the negative reviews, Dr. Ray's class is very doable. You will have to put in many hours of studying because there is so much content, but once you pay attention in class and study her PPTS to a T you will do well. She can be condescending at times but she gives GREAT lectures. Made a B on my first exam and an A on the rest including final.
When I first started in her class, she did move fast so I was alittle scared but as the semester went on, I got acclimated with how fast she teaches. Shes a really great teacher though, just teaches kinda fast.
Biochem with Dr. Ray is VERY doable, you just have to put in the time. The material can get complex, but overall it is not too bad. Test questions are generally pretty easy and straight from the powerpoints. If you study the powerpoints, you will do very well.
Everyone keeps using the word "doable". This class is NOT doable if you have a busy semester because it has to be the only class you focus on. I personally couldn't stand her, her lectures & ppts, BUT her exams were very similar to her practice exams. You have to figure out how to study for this class on ur own because it is not a one size fits all
Ray was a very cut-and-dry professor. She was kinda strict about the results you would get in the lab, but I appreciated that since it made me strive to do the experiments well. I won't lie; I cried a few times in lab because of the difficulty, but that's something you'll expect when doing chem labs. the TAs were amazing though!
expect to study 15-20 hrs/wk if you want to succeed. Seriously. Lectures move So fast (1 FULL slide/minute). The homework, quizzes, and extra study material are worth it, but the latter exams are much more mechanism heavy than the assignments were. Study during the break. She is very straightforward, smart, dry, and it can come off as rude.
CHEM3200: I have never met a more nitpicky professor than Dr. Ray. Asks way too much for an elective. Turned a college career planning class into research writing; out of 25 topics to choose from, 20 were biochem related - geared towards her interest. Guest-lecturers that have info NA to us, then gets mad when we dont pay attention. Horrible class
She is very strict about her labs. Before the lab, she will hand you a data sheet/worksheet that you need to complete at home but she doesn't explain how to do the worksheet properly before you take it home so you end up guessing how to do it. She also rushes you during labs if you are working slowly.
Terrible lab instructor. Does not properly explain concepts and instructions, even when most students are confused. She creates are own set of rules unlike the other lab instructors.
don't get me wrong, she's a really good professor. there is an extremely large amount of content, yet it is do-able. study and practice biochemistry for just like an hour or two everyday. practice exams are the closest resource to her actual exams. this is advice i wish i could've told for myself :)
Don't let my grade fool you, this course is no cake walk. My advice for Dr. Ray's class: go light on your credit hours. Some of her hits include: Late arrivals, fill-in-the-blank notes, & delayed quizzes, yet no extensions. If you thrive on death by PowerPoint, then this professor is for you. Otherwise, be prepared for a demanding course.
Pretty straightforward. Kinda confusing during lectures but is more clear and able to elaborate more in her help sessions and office hours. Make flashcards, study sheets, and religiously do workbook, textbook, and practice exams. TA sessions were very helpful too.
FIRE! FIRE! RUN! RUN! Unforgiving when it came to exams and not well organized when it come to lecture materials. Dr. Ray will read off the slides and the lectures are overwhelming and difficult to follow review outside of class. You WILL spend hours studying outside of class. I got an A and i feel like I lost a peice of myself in the processs.
Pretty tough professor but info is pretty much handed to you without having to read the textbook. Recommend taking MCB and lab before this course since information is pretty much almost the same. Review a lot of gen chem and orgo 2 since there's a lot of mechanisms that build from these courses.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I BEG. Exams are unforgiving and are essentially english tests with a hint of biochemistry. Gigi comes to class late, then rushes the lesson. Spends 20 minutes discussing information that wont be on the exam, makes mistakes about vital information then doesn't apologize or explain her corrections. DONT TAKE HER. Thank you
The best thing you can do is show up to class and pay attention. Everything you need to do well on her exams is in the lecture slides. 4 exams (one drop & all multiple choice), a final, practice exams that are similar to actual exam, weekly quizzes, in-class participation quizzes, one pop-quiz per unit, & optional homework assignments.
She was more powerpoint and more physiology heavy in BC2 compared to BC1. Dragged on class even after the end of lecture time. But benefit is that everything on the exam is straight from the powerpoints and student companion book.TA sessions were bad compared to BC1 they barely helped lol and she would complain people never show up.
I don't recommend taking CHEM 3200. If you have other classes going on, this class WILL drain you. I took this class for AREA G, since it is a research class there is a group assignment. Be careful of who you partner with. Also, Dr. Ray played favorites in this class among the group. Made me upset when she insinuated I didn't know the project.
There are a lot of content need study, and the test cover all of this
DONT TAKE HER! Ray is so hard to follow and understand. She doesn't explain big concepts and just assumes that everyone would understand from Ochem. She doesn't care if we understand the material she just wants to finish the slides and leave. Make sure to go to every TA session and go to every lecture, she does participation quizzes and pop quizzes
Can she even be considered a professor? All she does is read off the PowerPoint and gives ZERO explanation. An AI voice reading her slides would probably do a better job. If you're taking be prepared to be self study this class on your own.
5 exams, one of the first 3 exams can be dropped, not the 4th. almost none of what she goes over in class reflects on the exam, the things she brushes on seem to take up the entirety of the exams. go to all the study sessions she offers including TA 1 on 1s, very little EC so jump at all opportunities offered. do well on the online quizzes.
This will be very detailed, but avoid her if you can. I came in as a freshman with chemistry lab experience for years. She is very disorganized and shows up to class late often. She COULD be a good lab professor if she was not as cut-throat and passive-aggressive during the lab itself. If you asked questions, she would answer though.
This professor was not good at anything. She is a tough grader and has very little patience to students who are struggling to grasp the concepts she teaches in lab. She should not be a professor period.
Avoid if possible, very very harsh grader, can be rude but wil explain things if you are struggling. She once gave me a 4/10 for a quiz I got correct answers for Eveyrhjng because I did include units in my WORK. I had units for my final answer but she decided to fail my quiz because of no units on the WORK.
BEWARE. This professors style at teaching lab concepts is horrible. She is not clear in her grading criteria and worse at updating grades. Do not take her. You will be doing yourself a favor. Worst professor I have taken in college.
She rushes through lectures and doesn't post the completed notes. 4 exams, weekly online quizzes, and in-class quizzes. At a certain point I just attended lecture for the notes and taught myself…
Moves too fast.
Having her for lecture might be worse than lab but she will expect you to already know chem even though it's a freshman level general course. She also grades by accuracy but won't tell u how to fix your answers. never be late or you can't participate in lab (10 pts off).
During pre-lab, she is great. During lab, she is really intimidating. Her syllabus is very straightforward and organized. I'm going to be honest, being in her class made me question my abilities and tested me emotionally. However, if you attend her office hours, she is very helpful and will ease your worries regarding any concerns you may have.
If you actually need biochem for exams or other courses, this is your class. She does move fast, but there's a lot of content to cover. Bring the slides on an iPad or print them out!
