Best music professor here at Baruch College. It's a tough class but he makes it interesting and understandable by playing Youtube videos and simplifying the readings in the textbook. He's a chill dude. Very friendly.
Overall a very good professor. Recently starting teaching, but he's really good. He's very knowledgable and is very passionate about music. His tests are pretty straightforward provided you read the material, paid attention in class, and listened to the music (and no the night before doesn't count). There are no trick questions. Have fun!
I loved and learned a lot from his class. There are 5 tests and they are generally easy as long as you pay attention in every class and listen to the music. Participation helps with the grades too! You can see his passion for music through his lectures and he has a cheerful personality. Take him!
I think he's new but he's very good! There are 5 tests he gives review sheets for each which are very helpful so there are no surprises. He is very passionate about music and overall its a fairly easy class if you put some effort.
Awesome professor. He is extremely passionate about the subject, funny, and makes the lectures interesting. The subject matter is somewhat tough but take good notes and you'll do well.
Absolutely clear. Always ready to answer any questions and concerns. Gives review sheet for every exam. Easy class as long as you pay attention.
I like him very much and his class is meaningful to me. It's not an easy class to me because I don't know anything about music. But I still do well in his class. He gives review sheet before each exam, and there are no surprises on the exam. take him, you will never regret
The class is hard, lots of definitions, but he explains everything. He clearly loves music, and is always telling stories. He makes a lot of jokes, especially at the expense of the students that arrive late to class. 5 exams, the final was worth 25% of the grade. If you pay attention, take notes, and study you should be fine, if you don't...
If you are reading this while looking for a music teacher during registration, do not hesitate. Register for this man's class as soon as possible because he is excellent at his job.
This professor is the best. Don't think twice about taking one of his classes, actually if you're lazy maybe think twice...Straight forward, gives review sheets. Solid professor
I DON'T GET why people saying that he is a good teacher i don't think so . his five exams are really hard like killers. don't recommend him.
Grade is based on 5 exams. Since there are so many, you'd expect them to be easy, but that's not the case. They are much harder than what he makes them out to be. Way too much work for an introductory class. Stay away if you're part of the 95% of the college population that doesn't care about music, and just takes it as a requirement.
He is really nice guy! He is the man. Actually ,I messed up for the first and second exams, but I got perfect score on the third test. Also, he gave everybody extra credits too. I don't really understand those who are saying that this class is hard. If you really feel hard about this class, then.. what can I say? College is not your cup of tea :)
His tests aren't hard at all if you study. He lets you know everything that will be on the exams ahead of time and provides all the music. Don't let the harsh comments keep you from taking his class. They're probably just lazy kids who sat back and expected an A to be handed to them just bc it's a 1000 level class.
Absolutely loved this class! He's a great professor. Really knows what he's talking about, is a very fair grader, engages the class. Take him if you can!!
Best professor I've ever had, hands down. Take him if you can; you will learn so much. Loved this class!
Loved him! Teaches everything that's on the test, don't even need the textbook. No homework and is very passionate about his class. Only thing is you have to be able to recognize some pieces for tests, but that's easy. Very clear when teaching and plays the piano during class
His class is enjoyable. I would recommend him. Test are not hard but you'll need a little studying. Funny guy overall and i quite chill.
My favorite college class ever! I truly looked forward to his class, he's pretty cute too so that was a plus! The material was not hard at all. If you people can remember Bieber songs, it shouldn't be hard to remember Bach or Mozart. It takes effort to get a good grade, but nothing should come easy. Plays the heck out of the piano too!
his personality rocks. i will be missing his moonlight sonata 3 mvt. solo and Bach's stuffs. Really loved those.
Love this class! the exams are easy and clear since he gives out review sheets prior to the exams. All you have to do is go to class and read your notes before the test! He is always willing to help!
Although he struggled with the spelling of the French word for rebirth, I did in fact enjoy this course very much. Prior to the course I was already a Jeopardy whiz but now I have almost mastered the music clues, well at least during the teen tournaments. His dashing looks sure did make the class more pleasant.
This professor's teaching style is amazing. He managed to educate us without making it feel like a formal class environment, but rather, like a conversation. I really enjoyed the material and had a fun time. I feel like taking this class has made me more well-rounded as an individual.
I would recommend him. His class is easy and fun. He gives review sheets before each test. All you have to do is go to class and read your notes before the test! Definitely take him !!!
Awesome, funny teacher! The material, too, is interesting. Harel is full of trivia and knowledge. His tests are easy and he posts review guides at least one week in advance. Try to engage yourself (as in any other class) and you will have a blast. The environment is relaxed and conducive to learning. Also, just a nice guy.
This class (The Opera) is great, and Prof. Harel is great at teaching it. He's engaging, friendly, fun and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the material. I wasn't a huge Opera fan before taking the course, but the professor has really sparked my interest. Professor Harel demands that you know your stuff-he's no push over-but he's fair and clear.
Great great great professor! To an otherwise boring class (Opera), he made it engaging and it we clearly felt his enthusiasm. A course that should be available every semester...only with Harel of course!
Really awesome professor. Knows his stuff and makes the subject matter interesting. Pay attention, take notes, and engage yourself and you'll do well.
Does a great job of making an Baroque music class tolerable. Explains things clearly and keeps the class fun.
Made Baroque interesting. Gives you a chance to improve grade if you work hard, and it's really important to read the textbook
Greatest music professor you can possibly find. Give review sheets before each tests. All fair games if you study. Take good notes during lectures because things that he emphasized are most likely gonna be on the test. Handsome and funny guy. You should take him if you can!
Amazing professor, easy going, funny, knowledgable in the subject, and always willing to give help if needed. Gives review sheets before every test. As long as you take notes in class and study what's on the review sheets, you'll do fine.
The professor was simply amazing and this was the best class I have yet to take at Baruch. I wasn't looking forward to taking a music class, especially over winter break, but I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. He is handsome, funny, and makes the class really interesting. I honestly really recommend taking him!
Great Professor, makes class very interesting. But I hated his exams. he gives a review sheet with the terms but on exam he wants every detail of that term which is so tough since he doesn't have review sessions. Needs to make his exams better otherwise great class.
Take his classes. Prof. Harel's high score is not (only) because he is very handsome. He is very funny, a fair grader, and a great speaker. I only objected to music upon being assigned my first semester classes and ironically I learned more in this class than all my others put together. I have so much respect for him and I will truly miss the class
He is crystal clear when he speaks and I was in a class with more than 100 kids. He will acknowledge you and if you put an effort and study, will probably get an A. You will not just learn about music but a bit of everything (he even gives mini German lessons). I now keep classical music in my iPod because of his listening tests.
Winner of the 2014 Presidential Excellence Awards for Distinguished Teaching and he deserves every single bit of this award. The combination of his passion for music and teaching is lethal. Extremely knowledgeable and amazingly talented person. My love for music grew exponentially after taking this class. TAKE HIM!!!!!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!
Prof Harel is the best! Going to his class was the highlight of the day. He is funny and and makes the material fun. Overall good dude who tries to teach you what could be a boring topic. He's young so he knows whats up with the whats up. Gives review sheets for tests. Gives some extra credit. Good times on the reg.
Extremely recommend this professor. The best teacher in my life. You must take him.
Professor Harel is incredibly passionate about the subject and clearly wants his students to do well in the class. He can be a bit pissy in certain situations, but nevertheless is THE best professor to take for any music class.
This professor opened up a whole new world to me. Now when I listen to music I can talk about it. I got tons of knowledge. He teaches you a little German as well as art so not only music. His class was a highlight in my day and I used to run to his class. Exams are extremely easy he also gives extra points. Greatest semester in my college years.
I am not a classical music person but this class actually felt like a blessing between my accounting and economics class where I can just enjoy good music and great discussion for an hour. Amazing professor, completely changed my perception of music.
Great professor, great guy. Really teaches you everything you need to know, respect him and he will respect him. Just show up for lectures and take notes and you barely even have to read the textbook. More than fair grader. Study the review sheet and your good to go for the test. Easy A and interesting material too.
JUST LOVE HIM! HE IS AMAZING! TAKE HIM!!
Just awesome. Study the review sheet he gives for every test and get an easy A. The tests are not cumulative.
Amazing prof. took him in the summer. Test are easy plus hes way hott.
I've never met a professor so passionate! His lectures goes by quick and he only has 5 tests and no HW, if you pay attention you only need his review sheet i never actually baught the textbook. He has so many funny stories and can relate to students. Great guy if you can take him do so because he's the best!
By far my favorite teacher so far. I am so happy I had him my first semester at Baruch. He explains terms on the review sheet and goes over what we have to know for the tests. The tests aren't hard, 5 short ones the whole semester. I always looked forward to going class. He makes class both fun and serious. If you have the opportunity-take him!!
Gil is the best prof ever! He knows what he's doing, knows everything there is to know about music, speaks clearly, lectures are entertaining, tests are easy and straight forward, if you pay attention, barely any hw. and you learn to speak some German! He is my fav prof so far and I would take this class again! plus, hes cute *_*
Honestly he's a really amazing professor! My playlist is now SO diverse. I never thought I would enjoy a class on "music history" but he makes it great. I loved the challenge, although it wasn't crazy. He really makes sure we're all learning enough, and getting our money's worth. He plays the piano beautifully as well haha. LOVE GERMAN GIL
Professor Harel is an absolute must-take. He is brilliant, intelligent, knows his material. He is hilarious, funny, and very cool. He has only 5 tests throughout the semester, and you MUST go to his lectures to do well on his tests, which are relatively easy if you just listen. In general, MSC 1003 with Harel was awesome, fun, and easy!
Great professor, would definitely take again. only 5 exams everything is covered in the lectures. I actually like operas and classical music now!!!
4 in helpfulness because gives review sheets for all his tests. 3 in clarity because half the stuff he says is very helpful, while the other half is pretty much useless. 4 in easiness because it's an intro class so obviously easy, just study the review sheets and read the the assigned pages in textbook.
I loved him. If you're looking for a good time and want to actually learn something take him. Seriously do not take this class with anyone else, he's the best. Read the textbook and listen to the music he puts on blackboard, pay attention in class and participate and you'll get an A. It's really not that hard to get an A in this class.
Prof. Harel is a really down to Earth guy. He makes class fun so that was cool. His tests are rather simple as long as you study at least two days before. If he taught more than one class I would be a music minor. Overall great class and a real GPA booster.
He makes the class very fun and interesting. He only gives 5 quizzes. They're easy as long as you pay attention in class. He also gives review sheets before each exam. Very passionate about the subject. Overall a great class. You won't regret it.
He's tests are mainly based on his lectures. His lectures are in the form of story telling so the material is really easy to understand and remember. I wouldn't take anyone else for music! He is the best professor that i've had so far!
Definitely Dr. Harel is one of the best professors in Baruch. I really leaned a lot from him and now I am keen on classical music as well as Romantic music because Dr. Harel is an erudite person and he treats you like a friend. Notwithstanding the five exams probably are not as easy as you image, if you study for these, you will get at least A-.
Great Professor. There is no better than Prof. Harel. Personally I could care less about classical music but he makes the class enjoyable with a combination of school and hilarious jokes
Excellent smart amazing gifted professor and musician.
Professor goes off on many tangents, talking about boston and germany way too much. He will put 40 definitions on a review sheet and then only have 10 questions on the test. All these high ratings are because the class is casual and he cusses alot, not because he is a good professor. Because he is not.
Amazing teacher! I am so happy I got to take him my first semester at baruch! He is so clear&his test are easy. He makes class so enjoyable with the way he teaches. Sometimes he would play amazing pop tunes on the piano which made coming to class even better! If I could, I would take it again! Take him if there's a spot available!
Harel is the best! he really loves the course and makes you love it too. Just go to class and get the definitions to the words on his practice test and study. He really makes you love music.
Love him! Makes me want to learn German lol
Exceptionally talented & intelligent guy. Very hilarious & respectful. He knows his stuff. Even his tangential knowledge is astounding. Half the time he's speaking I'm more in awe of his knowledge, and how well informed he is and how he relays the information to us than I am about the topic he's teaching. Tests are easy but you gotta study.
One of the best professors I have ever taken. He genuinely piqued my interest in the field of music, in the past where I have dabbled in playing guitar and piano, and shunned any musical productions before 1960, I now find myself putting Mozart on repeat, and endeavoring to further my curiosity in piano. This is all because of Harel's class. LOVED.
Harel is by far an amazing music professor. He knows his stuff and plays the piano beautifully. The exams are short and cover stuff that was read so they are easy. I understand so much more of music and learned some German too. Great class and would take again and yes he is good looking
Prof Harel was probably my best professor of the semester. He has a wide base of knowledge that he applies to the subject that makes it much more interesting than it could have been. He is approachable and gives clear direction. Highly recomended 11/10!
I have absolutely NO interest in music history but it was required. Professor Harel made it bearable and I was able to get a B. He's certainly funny and creates a welcoming atmosphere in the classroom but the content was just too much for me to grasp. Pathetic, I know.
Dude's so cool. If you need some type of elective I'd recommend this. Music history is fun for no one, unless that's your fetish, but Harel makes it interesting. 5 tests worth 10, 15, 20, 25 & 25 points of a final grade are so important, but quick studying is all it takes. Listening portion give yourself 2 days in advance to study for. Great class.
He's funny. His stories are great. Show up and take notes, you'll be fine. He summarizes and goes everything needed from textbook. He's practically the book so you don't even need the textbook. A plus if you'd like extra help but everything is said in class. Practice listening to the songs/pieces. Show up, pay attention, study a bit & you'll pass.
Best prof I've ever had. As someone who is interested in music and for those who do not, he is a must have. Hilarious and cool. Awesome lectures and really makes you want to learn!
Professor Harrel made the class a breeze. As long as you write down the notes which he spoon feeds you during class you should get an A. He's really funny and the class was enjoyable. Take him if the class is open
Professor Harel is the best. He is really funny, cute and hot. He responds email within 2 hours, which is very good compared to other professors. I dont understand why other professors at Baruch make subject tricker even it is actually not a hard topic at all. But professor make it easier to understand and his tests were very fair and straitforward
Professor Harel may be the best professor i have taken in my years at Baruch, he is a must take. Five easy quizzes are all the work that needs to be done. TAKE HIM. His class is so interesting and it is an easy A, but you will learn a lot. Has a big passion for teaching, you may even learn some German.
I really wish I could take another class with him. His lectures were hilarious and even though he doesn't take attendance, his lectures makes you want to come to class. Five easy tests but he doesn't drop your lowest grade or offer extra credit. If you miss a single test it can really screw up your grade.
Harel is the best music professor at Baruch. Lectures are interesting and as long as you participate in class and get engaged in the lectures it's an easy A. Gives extra credit for attending music events at Baruch. Cool guy
A true inspiration. My favorite professor I've ever had. So funny and insightful, he will make anybody interested in music. TAKE THIS MAN! So much fun and if you study the listening for about 30 minutes and pay attention to the lectures, you will get an A!
Would not recommend this class.
Professor Harel is one of the best professor's that I've ever had. Please ignore the comment that someone left down below that warned people not to take this class. I highly suggest taking this class if you are looking for a fun and interesting class. He will often times combine his talent of piano, singing and German for an interesting class.
I took this class just for credit and ended up enjoying every single session. Professor Harel is smart, passionate, organized and has a great sense of humor. He cares about students and does his best to inspire them to do better. The wealth of knowledge that you gain by taking this class with professor Harel is beyond measure. R.K.
Best Professor ever!!! He's so nice and understanding; if you're ever absent make sure to let him know the reason. He's a really engaging professor and you can tell he cares about his work and his students a lot. STUDY FOR HIS TESTS!!!!! All in all I definitely recommend him to everyone.
This guy is literally amazing. He definitely knows what he's talking about andis extremely eloquent in his explanations. He's an expert in his field, and his passion for the subject matter makes each class interesting.
Prof. Harel is an incredibly knowledgeable instructor who is able to deliver consistently engaging lectures with humor and charm. Outside of the classroom, Prof. Harel makes himself very available to students and is unbelievably personable. It's a shame that he doesn't teach more classes in CUNY.
Far and away the best professor I've had in Baruch. Incredibly funny, articulate, and knowledgable. Do yourself a favor and take this class.
Professor Harel is very passionate and an amazing speaker. He makes his lectures very interesting, even on a subject you never thought you would be interested in. Although I took this class as a requirement, I will miss it so much. He gives 5 short tests which you need to study for, but he goes over everything in class so take good notes.
I never write reviews on my professors but for Professor Harel it's worth it honestly. I've never seen a professor so respected by his class as a whole, or students so inspired to learn more about a topic that's probably so far from their major. He is passionate about the topic and makes it interesting and funny to learn and learn more about.
Honestly the best professor I could possibly wish to have. The class is lecture based and while the material does get a bit dull at times, Professor Harel never ceases to make it interesting with a myriad of jokes and witty comments. It's rare that a teacher is liked by an entire class of students but everyone loved him so much!
Boring class, but good teacher Here is exactly how to take this class. Don't buy textbook go to class take notes 1st test really easy 2nd test really easy, just study terms he gave you a day or 2 before 3rd test hardest one because of classical listening section 4th and 5th test are easier.
Professor Harel is one of my favorite professors here. You could tell through his lectures (which were never boring) that he is so intelligent and well spoken. He cares a lot about his students and about creating a stimulating environment for them to learn in. The entire class had a lot of respect for him. I am very thankful for such professors.
easy class, 5 tests , review sheet overfilled and you have to memorize music
I honestly loved this class mostly because I could tell how passionate the professor was about the subject which made me actually wanna learn it and easy to listen to him lecture. I completely recommend him. He's nice to look at also haha.
Dr. Harel is by far one of the most intelligent professors I've had while attending Baruch. He is very sophisticated and his knowledge goes far beyond the study of music. If you aren't a slacker, not only will you succeed in his course, you will learn a lot about music and history.
Good professor, nice guy
Honestly, one of the best teachers I've taken in my entire life. He was able to make class fun and enjoyable and really inspire you to learn the material. At the beginning of the class, I was expecting a boring music class, but he really makes the effort to make the class fun by cracking jokes and playing the piano during class.
Boring yet very laid back class. Good for young students as the professor is decent looking and the quizzes/class is a joke in terms of difficulty.
One of the best professors at Baruch. Lectures are interesting and engaging, and information is taught eloquently, articulately, and passionately. He loves what hes teaching and he wants the class to enjoy it as well. 5 tests, about 35-40 minutes long (Multiple Choice, Long Answer, Listening). No final exam. Textbook was helpful, but not essential
Amazing professor, take his class you don't regret it.
