Tostevin makes you work hard for your grade, but he is funny and if you talk to him personally he is really helpful. Cute too.
Gil is fantastic; he is excited about his classes, and he makes lectures interesting. Not the easiest grade ever, but not challenging if you listen to his great lectures.
For the most part, Gil can make some pretty boring material relatively exciting. He is an expert in what he teaches and can explain anything to you
BORING, he goes into WAY too much detail, there is way to much stuff to learn for his exams, I would not recommend him at all, i heard taking this as a night class would be way easier.
Well, maybe it's just me, but I thought this was an EXTREMELY difficult course. He goes into WAY too much detail,a nd the exams cover the book, lecture, lab lecture, lab, films in class, way too much stuff to handle. Class means are like failing too. Thank god it's curved at the end.
Great teacher! I suggest taking Gil's class, it is an easy way to meet the Bio/Lab requirement for graduating. He is a nice guy and likes to have fun in lecture. Take him!
I have no interest in science whatsoever, but Gil's class wasn't bad. He made lectures pretty entertaining, although they did go really in depth. You'll have to work quite a bit for a good grade, but in the end, you end up learning a lot. I thought the class was hard, but Gil did a great job of teaching-he's passionate and knows his stuff!
I took this to get rid of the bio lab req. Very difficult and in depth. The labs were usually easy though. I took it S/N -- very good choice on my part. I did the readings, went to most lectures, did assignments, and did a bit above avg on tests and would have gotten a C+. Interesting class at points. He cracks a few good jokes. :)
He had a great sense of humor and made the topics interesting.
I took this for the BIO/lab req. It was harder than I thought it would be. The exams are in depth and long. The lab is easy, I went half awake at 8 a.m. and did fine. Take a lot of notes on the lectures.
His teaching all depends on the class. I have had him in 3 different classes (flintknapping, neaderthals, and material culture). His flintknapping class was really cool, and he is really fun to take it with. Neanderthals and Material culture were a lot harder, but he still taught well, although there was a lot of reading. He is one of those profs that actually make you think instead of do mindless homework assignments.
He is an awesome teacher. Firm but fair and super fun!!!
I was a science-hater. He changed that completely. I actually enjoyed going to lecture. He is a very engaging speaker and tries hard to stay away from dullness in his teaching. It was a really interesting class; if you put forth the effort, you'll do well grade-wise.
He is a good professor, a funny guy who interjects humor into his lectures. The subject matter is a LOT more in depth and DETAILED than i thought it would be. I'll probably pull out an A or high B in this class but because of the exams its definitely not a breeze. The labs are fine just make sure you do the readings every week for the weekly quiz.
Sometimes the lectures became suddenly very upper-level and difficult to follow. Hard to know what's important for tests from the lectures. Labs are very straight-forward. Staying up with information for the lab quizzes was the hardest part, so only take this during a semester where you can devote significant time to it outside of class.
I took ANTH 1001 with him and Prof Tappen team teaching. His teaching was clear, engaging, and incredibly informative and made me thoroughly enjoy this class. If you can take it with just him the better!
Gill was a bunch of fun! He was a great teacher, he always stayed on track, and always go the point across. He is funny, and very approachable, and easy to listen to. I HIGHLY recommend Gill! That class would have been Much harder if I had a different Prof!
He is a very good teacher.
Spectacular professor.
Great teacher, very interesting person. Had lots of great stories and ideas to add to the official topics.
I really thought that this class was great. He was very good at making the topics fun and enjoyable.
Class was interesting. Labs were very easy and always got out way early. Its not an Easy A class, you will have to study very hard on all the tests to get an A. But semi Easy B class.
very knowledgable, but expects a lot from intro students. only problem was that he had TA who did not teach us write exams. One midterm had 60% class average with no curve. tested on things we were told we did not need to study. tests are HARD. Would have enjoyed this class if I felt that tests were not impossible to pass.
Professor Tostevin is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is funny, super-smart, and legitimately cares about his students. Slackers and the lazy should avoid him because you have to actually do the work (and there is quite a bit of it) to do well. Serious students and lovers of archaeology will learn a lot from this man. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Professor Tostevin is an all around good guy. He makes funny jokes in class and tries to liven up lectures that can get immensely boring sometimes. This is definitely not a slacker class and is not for those who want an easy A. The assignments and labs are super easy but the tests are brutal. You must come in with prior biology knowledge!!
Professor Tostevin was very clear and structured in his lectures. In general not too difficult but his tests make up for the easiness of the rest of the class. Very difficult tests.
Professor Tostevin made class interesting & he often made jokes to keep us entertained. You can tell that he cares about what he's doing but he goes through his lecture slides really quickly & his structure is hard to follow. As the class goes on he goes really in-depth about the subject & it gets confusing. His tests are HARD so prepare yourself!
Gil has really entertaining/interesting lectures that definitely motivate you to go to class. However, I found the exams to be very difficult. I kept up with the readings and did all the required work and I still barely scraped by. Otherwise, it was a good class taught by a great professor.
Professor Tostevin is incredibly passionate about the subject which is very clear through his lectures. He is very funny although his lectures are a bit fast paced. I got 92% on the first midterm, but after that I found the course to be very difficult and the tests definitely got harder, which Gil even warned us about. Advice: read the textbook!
Professor Tostevin is an amazing professor. He is extremely passionate and very willing to help with everything. He likes to make jokes to keep the material interesting. The class has some easy points, but the tests are quite difficult, so studying is absolutely necessary. His lectures are always very interesting and well-planned.
Good class to get your science credit out of the way. Tough class, lots of reading involved and the lectures in class move quickly and can be difficult to follow. He is very funny, nice, helpful and approachable. He responds quickly via email with good tips for studying for exams. Nice guy, but the class is NOT an easy A.
Prof Tostevin is my favorite professor of all time. Before taking the course I knew almost nothing about Anthropology and after I decided I wanted to add Anthropology into my future and double major in Biology and Anthropology all because of professor Tostevin. You don't have to read the book, just listen and understand everything in the PPTs.
Does his best to keep things interesting. Lectures were long and hard to follow. Tests are based more on the lecture material than textbook--don't bother getting the book, but make sure you take excellent notes. I'd suggest recording the lectures (video AND audio). Interesting class, easy labs, hard tests--but passable w some studying.
I have never seen cumulative midterm. This one has two of them and my notes are 38-page long for each midterm. Taking note in class? Nope. It's not just possible unless u have 5 hands.
Fun, interesting lectures. Labs are even better.
Dr. Tostevin is not what you would expect for an Anthropologist. He is actually a really down to earth guy who loves what he does, and it shows in his lectures. The man is a plethora of information. I only took the class because I needed a ScienceLab credit, but found myself really enjoying his course. If you need help, just seek out the TA's.
I honestly took evolution just to knock off a lib ed requirement or two. However, it turned out to be the most interesting class I took all semester. I thought Gil's lectures were super interesting and he's obviously very passionate about what he does. There's only a handful of tests throughout the semester and they aren't curved, so study well.
Labs are easy, tests are hard, and it's impossible to keep up on notes in lectures. Definitely not an easy A.
Lectures are long, and he covers a lot of material. Note-taking skills are essential. Study hard for the tests, but there are enough points in the labs, etc. to make up for lower test scores. I got C's on my midterms and a low F on the final and still got a B in the class (thanks to the curve). Would recommend him and the class if you need it.
The reading homework can be intense, but this was easily one of my favorite classes I've taken at the U. Gil presents the material in an interesting, accessible, and well-organized way. I learned a lot about anthropology and I think about the class and the texts we read all the time. The tests were a bit challenging to study for.
Gil is an extremely interesting guy to listen to and you can tell he is passionate about what he does. This class has A LOT of reading that I didn't have time for, which made certain concepts hard. Otherwise, an overall decent class. Great professor.
I took Dr. Tostevin's Human Evolution class due to a needed lab requirement, although I did not ace the class by any means, I found that I really did enjoy his lectures and the material presented. When it comes to grades, he doesn't have any hands on, it is all on the TA's. Pray you get a good TA & not one who thinks you should know it all
Gil was a really funny professor and a lot of his lectures were very interesting. At times he will go on rants and some lectures won't be very fun and will seem long, you need to go to lecture though because the book only covers a small part of what he finds important. Be prepared to memorize and there are no study guides given for tests.
I loved Human Evolution, it actually ended up being my favorite class I have taken since I had come to the University. Very interesting, although he goes through a lot of information very fast and the tests are hard. If you get a chance to talk to him about the material, take it, because he's a really cool guy and seems to know everything.
Fabulous lecturer, very engaging and passionate about the material. As an Intro class, this course covers a LOT of material, and the exams are cumulative. The lab sections are extremely helpful. If you do all the work, you'll do well.
Tostevin is long-winded in lectures and goes into way more detail than necessary to pass the class, but they are always enjoyable and interesting. Tests are a bit tough. You have to go to class because there are little attendance assignments every day. Interesting course that gave me a deeper understanding of human evolution.
Best professor I had so far. Lectures are very interesting. It's hard to take notes in this class. Just listen to everything he says and go over the powerpoints. Start studying for the midterm a few days before because it covers a lot of topics. You should do fine. Definitely recommend it
If you were thinking to take this as an Easy A - don't. The lectures are long and boring, and he talks too fast for you to be able to keep up. The labs and homework are easy, but the tests are ridiculous and he gives you no resources or guides for studying. If this kind of stuff is interesting to you, take the course. If not, find another class.
Spent more time on this class than I had hoped to. Lectures have ALAs, so there's a point incentive for showing up. Lectures are pretty dull, and a little awkward. Labs are where I gained the most. TAs are super nice, and lab material gives you an idea of what's really relevant for exams.
lectures are crazy boring, material is crazy boring. The professor himself is very nice and understanding and passionate which is nice. Exams are pretty.
One of the most interesting - fascinating classes I've taken. The professor presents the information well.
It's easy to pass this class because 50% of your grade is participation. The other 50% is exams, and if you study the lecture slides and labs you'll get a C on them. Lectures are boring but he knows that and does his best to make it semi-interesting.
I took introduction to anthropology (1001) for the biology lib ed credit, and I heavily regretted it. The textbook is very confusing and lectures don't really clear anything up. The tests are cumulative, so if you didn't understand stuff before you will do poorly on the tests. Doesn't help that I really disliked my lab TA. Don't recommend at all.
I absolutely loved Mr. Tostevin. He knows the subject matter very well and inspired me to study anthropology at the U of M. The tests are cumulative so it's important to stay on top of the labs and readings.
Tostevin is a fun and engaging professor but the lectures can get long and boring. He tries to make it as fun as possible but the subject matter makes it difficult. There are 3 tests and no study guides so that is difficult but as long as you do well in the labs and the in class attendance you will do fine. It is not an easy A if you don't study.
My advisor basically signed me up for this course. She told me people didn't have a hard time and I believed her. This course is SO DIFFICULT. Thankfully my lab TA was great and I passed the labs. Even the smart people at my table who actually understood the material didn't pass the exams and the professor chooses not to curve them.
It's definitely not an easy A. But Dr. Tostevin is passionate about his material and makes class interesting. I learned a lot but definitely lowered my usual expectations for my grades because the tests are hard
Nice enough guy, good teacher, fair grader but READ ATTEND & SPEAK. Not hard but a lot of reading. I only read summaries of the books & could only give surface level discussions & he sensed that. But I spoke at least once every class & got full participation points. A LOT of reading. Wouldn't take again only bc he probably thinks I'm an idiot lol
Gil is a great professor and a really kind and approachable human. There's a lot of reading for his Science Fiction course, but the books are all fantastic and thought-provoking (if you like sci-fi and anthropology).
I really liked Prof Tostevin, I found his lectures easy to follow and interesting. It helps that he loves the subject, because sometimes it's boring and it would be worse if he didn't. He made adjustments for us in the 2020 online class that were so appreciated and he really listened to the feedback from the class about how it was going. Cool guy.
Prof Tostevin relays information very well. He explains topics in a very natural way and is an excellent speaker. He really listened to students' feedback on course mechanics, since the class was online, and adapted things that weren't working. The easiest way to pass is to show up to labs. Don't show up and you will definitely drop a letter grade.
Unfortunately the pandemic made this course entirely online so I didn't have the opportunity to have Tostevin in person, however the lectures he posted were very interesting and he is incredibly understanding and flexible if you email him about concerns you may have with the course.
The course I took involved a lot of guest speakers. I would have liked to hear more from the professors of the class.
He's a good lecturer and makes the content interesting but it's pretty difficult to get an A in this class. The exams had a really low class average and there's an insane amount of content that this class covers but no study guide so you tend to go into exams feeling unprepared. If you need the gen ed credit though it's probably still your best bet
Tostevin was a decent professor, lectures were fine but boring. The class itself was easy, but the tests were difficult and weighed the majority of your grade. The class means for the midterms was about 60% and they did not curve anything.
Tostevin is a genuine guy. But oh man were those tests hard. Our class average for each test was a whopping 63-64% for all three tests given. It doesn't matter how hard you study, everyone struggles. I once studied for 7 hours and literally failed an exam and I was going into it with so much confidence. But hey, if you like anthropology do it!
Did a great job keeping students engaged considering that it was a 350 student class. The biggest class I've taken at the U, and hopefully for the rest of my life. I took this course for the Biological Sciences liberal education requirement and would recommend it for those looking to do the same. Course material was understandable and interesting.
Have had him from my 1000 level freshman classes to my 5000 level senior/graduate level classes. He's great! He can get a bit niche but his lectures are helpful. Tests are gone over before and after and he is always open to helping you succeed. In smaller classes his humor comes out and he's even more conversational in his lectures and discussions.
Not much of a fan of this goof ball. His module quizzes are way harder than they need to be. Do not recommend using his lecture slides for notes, they are not helpful at all.
Lab is interesting, lectures can get long.
Really enjoy his lectures, but they can feel a little long as they last an hour and 15 minutes. Really funny guy in lectures, although they are not mandatory. You must go to lab, but they always finish early and are pretty straight-forward. No midterms or final is a huge plus. Strongly recommend him for the Bio Lib Ed.
The lectures are typical. Your TA makes or breaks your experience with the class, mine made the class. He is very passionate about the class/ topics. There are textbook readings assigned but you really don't need to read them. The labs focus on the main idea of each module and it's where I learned the most. He posts lecture slides and recordings.

I found ANTH1001 to be a rather difficult course but Professor Tostevin has excellent lectures and does a good job explaining complex information. Your grade in this course is based on many assignments so if you are willing to put in the effort it is fairly easy to pass. Attendance for lectures is not mandatory but lab attendance is.
The course was interesting and you could tell that Professor Tostevin is passionate about the subject. The class itself is pretty easy; there isn't a lot of homework and the only "tests" you do are short module quizzes at home. The only problem I had with the course was the course workbook, it's a lot of work and is just busy work.
Gil will single-handedly take down the patriarchy. The lectures are very well researched, presented, and interesting. The work is reasonable, the module quizzes are difficult but all other assignments are not. Lab's are pretty easy to understand and complete. Don't fall behind on the course workbook. Attend the sex lecture its awesome.
This is a good class to take to get rid of a Lib Ed. There is a lot of work involved in this class and mandatory labs. The work for this class isn't that hard it's just time-consuming. The lectures are actually helpful and you definitely should take notes. All lectures are posted after class if you miss one though.
This class is really easy, and the professor was pretty nice. You don't really need to go to lectures since he posts the materials online. You do have to go to labs, but the labs are pretty fun. There's also minimal homework other than occasional module assignments.
Overall easy class the only difficulty was the quizzes and there are no tests. Assignments every other week and labs weekly were all graded by the TA who in my case was very lenient. The lectures are boring and their were lots of guest speakers, basically just reading off slideshows but it the course load is very slim, would definitely recommend.
He is a fun professor and the class was really cool. You don't have to show up to lectures (but you should) but you do have to show up to labs. There was no final so it was no pressure for a 40% grade effect. There are more quizzes spread throughout though. He is very understanding and is very knowledgeable.
Tostevin is an engaging, passionate, and funny lecturer even though the materials can get boring here and there. Lectures are semi-required as there are in-class participation questions so you won't want to miss too many. A time-consuming class for sure, make sure to study for the exams, but everyone wants you to succeed and it's a good lib-ed.
i loved tostevin's lectures. even though there is A LOT of material and lectures can get very boring, he is extremely passionate about what he teaches and keeps you very engaged. the tests can be a lot, but all the profs and TAs want you to succeed.
Gilbert Tastevin is very knowledgeable and clearly loves what he teaches. He lectures clearly and goes beyond just reading off the slides.
lectures can be very long and monotonous at times, but tostevin is obviously very knowledgable and passionate about the field. he is able to expand on topics beyond the slides (which are full of content as well). midterms are pretty hard, but everyone wants you to succeed.
Professor Tostevin was overall a good lecturer albeit a little boring and monotonous at times. The lectures were informative and the labs really helped to solidify your knowledge in the course. There are A LOT of things to learn and remember though. A lot of the midterm materials relied on the lectures and labs, didn't really read the textbook.
He's a great teacher and gives good lectures. They are easy to understand, but they just get long sometimes. He genuinely cares about his students and makes hard concepts easier to understand. The midterms and final aren't too bad, but they require a lot of memorization.
I had him as my lab lead temporarily and although he's super smart and passionate he's a bit of a tough grader, not usually a problem as there were weird circumstances that caused him to sub in lab but overall he did a great job and has super interesting lectures! I love that he's authentic in lecture not just trying to wear the 'professor' hat.
