Best teacher I ever had. I'd dedicate a book to her. :)
She is one of the best proffessors ever. Definately take a course by her
good teacher, gives good notes
thee best! easy marker, makes class fun!
She's laid back and easy going. You'll learn something from her
easy prof, very interesting, great teacher
Awesome teacher, very clear teaching, lots of note taking, easy marker.
great prof, well organized

really nice person. very interesting class.

Clear and helpfull classes combined with a $7.00 text and good marking style make one good teacher:)
ANTH 121 & ANTH 206. Very nice, informative teacher; her knowledge of the First Nations is excellent, and her love of culture shows. It is because of Gillian that I switched my major to Anthropology!
excellent, informative, easy to follow prof. tells you exactly whats going to be on the exam and cares about students. very knowledgable. i highly recommend her!!! excellent
If anyone else taught this class, it would have been a nightmare. But shes such an understanding, caring teacher that I made it - and had a good time. I love you Gillian!!
Great teacher, I really can't say enough about her. She has created her own textbook, saving you about $70 in books, which we all thank her for. Her course is a bit tough, but if you study you'll do fine. She's awesome!
Great intro to anth. Notes are very easy to follow and make studying a breeze. Tests are pretty basic, and I loved that fact that there was no text to read.
OK this course is all about theroy and it's dry and if anyone else taught it it would be my worst nightmare and I have told her that. She is awesome and she wants everyone to do well but dont be fooled her tests aren't easy but study and you'll do well.
Should've tried harder cuz an A+ is a very good possibility in this course!!
very interesting
This course is to be honest, pretty dull, it involves copying from the blackboard for 4 hours a week, for 13 weeks. Generally this course would belong mid-way through high school. There is nothing that challenges. Gillian is a very nice person though
yikes what the hell was that. Average tests but picky marker. Not very helpful but lecture was clear. Wouldn't move my grade based on a 0.75% discrepancy... but whatever. I would go elsewhere next time.
excellent prof!text book is cheap, easy to read and no actual heavy duty reading. bascially, D readings that u have to do is the notes that u take in her class. so have to attend lec. or else wont' have material to off of. very through knowledgable prof.
This was the first anthro class I took and she made me want to take more and more. You should really give this course a try it will open your eyes to the many different ways of seeing different cultures.
extremely knowlegeable and helpful.

Like every anth course, intro to soc anth is extremely easy. Anthropology is softball, a bright 13 year old could get an A+ in this class, really.
This class *is* pretty easy, but it's interesting and Gillian is totally awesome, extremely friendly and knowledgable. Highly recommended for those interested in social anthropology.
I loved Gillians class... she's very sweet, approachable and helpful. She has a passion for anthropolgy, and you can hear it in her voice when she lectures. It's a pretty easy course, but is so worth taking just to understand more about the world and the people in it. Plus the text is super CHEAP
Gillian is a totally awsome instructor. She is very laid back and open minded teacher. Although a little tough when marking tests. If you were to take Anthro I reccomend her.
This was my first anth class and I learned so much. It doesnt matter how challenging it is, as long as you come out feeling like you learned something and your time was well spent. I enjoyed the assignments, you get to be creative. The class is a breath of fresh air.
What a wonderful teacher and is especially tolerant of stupid loud-mouth students. She's a talented anthropologist with alot of knowledge. If you ever take an anthropology class, try to take one with her!
she'd a great, fun teacher. BUT VERY hard marker. You can study for hours on end and still end up with a crappy b-.
I was very interested in Social Anthropology before, then once I took her class, my interest was gone. She's a very nice lady with an interesting history but it wasn't exactly an enlightening experience.
she's an awesome teacher. have to pay attention in her classes tho. her exams are hard but very straightforward. she is very detailed with her lectures. presents alot of examples
no textbook which is good and bad. Too much notes. Boring class. Straightfoward test but very hard marker. takes off 1/2 marks. C'mon!
No need to buy textbook...you create the text by taking lots of notes. Very interesting class!! Tip for exams: memorize everything word for word, and an example of each topic. Essay/assignments are easy and fun to do.
awesome
Extremely helpful person, was willing to come to study groups and essentially lay out the tests ahead of time to help us. Very knowledgeable and open to comments and snippets of information. The lack of textbook is great but understand that she requires you to learn the stuff that you write down and read between your own lines.
Really enjoying the class. Gillian is a great prof, really cares about her students and makes sure that you understand the material. Can definitely tell she loves what she does. Lots of note taking, but at the same time, there's lots of material to cover - but she's really good about it. Organized and good lesson plans.
Very interesting class and she's so organised! Course was planned out very extremely well and she made sure we had lots of different material to learn from. She's always there to help when you ask and is very enthusiastic and approachable. Highly recommend her classes and look forward to taking another one of her Anth of Food course in the Spring.
A super nice person, but teaching is not her forte. Her notes are very hard to understand, and the coursework is not very engaging. It is less about the religions, an more about anthropology, with religions being used as examples to show the main tenants of anthropology.
Interesting class - lots of perspectives and topics covered. Her accent is a highlight of coming to class and the British slang she uses regularly are amusing. Very enthusiastic, kind, humorous, and helpful. Gives lots of resources to look into what is covered in greater detail and is extremely organized! Great prof, good class - def recommended
enjoy class a lot - she's pretty cool.
great teacher. very clear explanations. would definitely take more classes with her.
The course material is a tad dry, and lectures consist of writing down her notes into a textbook for the entire time. She is a nice person but not always clear, and demands very specific answers for tests.
Gillian is great. Make sure you make it to EVERY class. There's not a lot of reading to do, but there's a LOT of notes to take and interesting movies to watch. If you miss a couple of classes you will fall behind. She is funny and engaging. The exams are tough though and she's a hard grader. Enjoy!
Each class consists of writing down notes which are unclear and very repetitive. Her exams are hard and are entirely short answer questions. Spend a lot of time memorizing every last bit of your notes and you?ll do fine. You can tell she is very passionate in what she does however the class is dull.
She is really quite funny. A very sweet lady and a great teacher. She is a bit of a tough marker. She has 2 papers, midterm and final. The midterm and final are both brutal if you don't study. You should really study every day for this course to be able to remember everything. Read the articles in her book, they are on the two tests.
i took this class because i thought it would be easy, boy was i wrong. her midterm and final are both short answer and you have to memorize everything in the notes in order to get a decent mark.
Genuinely wanted to learn and do good in this class.. but the content is just so repetitive and unengaging. Nice prof, but her notes basically need to be memorized for the midterm and final and it doesn't help that the notes make zero sense. Not recommended whatsoever, waste of money, waste of time..
Gillian is a great instructor in every sense! She has extensive knowledge of and passion for her field, and is very generous with her time, in and out of class. She thoroughly answer any questions students have in class as learning the material seems to be of paramount importance to her. Ask questions, study hard and you'll do well!!!! Enjoy!!
Intro to anth: I've already taken some anthro courses so I thought this would be a breeze- Wrong. Gillian is very nice, and the course is interesting, but her tests are brutal and completely disheartening. I studied for hours (forewarned of her marking), but it did no good. She wants you to regurgitate her words. Very disappointing.. :(
Gillian is adorable and a really interesting lady. This course can be a bit dry at times, but you'd be surprised how much you've learned by the end of the class. The exams are intense, but the papers are easy. I would really recommend this class and Gillian as a teacher.
Ridiculously hard, class is extremely dull, not interesting at all. All you get out of class is her babbling nonsense but you need the notes to study for which make absolutely no sense what soever and theres no textbook to help out.If she doesnt like you, you will do bad.
Gillian Crowther is an absolute wealth of information and absolutely fascinating. I hear around campus some fairly defamatory comments about her teaching style around campus, but I generally find such comments come from whiny first years who've been coddled through highschool. She's incredibly helpful, well-versed in her material, and she's fair.
I thought anthropology would be cool but every single day she said the exact same things. her class was so boring i found myself skipping it almost every week. if you want to actually learn useful stuff then dont take this class. simple as that.
Gillian is a wonderful teacher! She is very passionate about her subject and gives great notes and examples. Shes always available and willing to help out her students, its clear that she really cares. I found her class easy, as I found her engaging and interesting. I went to see her at her office hours when I was unclear, she was so helpful!
Gillian is a fantastic teacher and super intelligent about her subject(s). I found the class really interesting and actually enjoyed the 'textbook' readings (not really a text book, just info about indigenous groups around the world). She is also really nice; I messed up the exam time and she let me write it any ways!!
Amazing teacher! she is so nice and very understanding. absolutely loved her class. it was a lot of work, but she made it fun.
defintly knows what shes talking about but sometimes goes on for a bit too long ! Lots of note taking and that is basically what her mid terms and finals are about. Class is full of memorization
Had my doubts about this class over the semester, but in the end I liked it. Subject matter is mildly interesting but quite useless afterwards. Gillian is a talented and passionate anthropologist of the old school, but her teaching techniques need work. Notes were all over the place, study guides horribly vague. Expected verbatim answers on tests.
She's definitely passionate and knowledgeable about anthropology, and she tries her best to answer any questions you have. The class could be kind of boring sometimes, though, so make sure you're interested in the subject matter. The notes on the board are never really detailed enough to study later, so add to them during lectures for clarity.
Very unclear with her notes and her assignments. Does not give good criteria for what she wants from our assignments or tests and marks extremely hard without any detailed reasoning as to why the mark is low. Overall EXTREMELY unclear about EVERYTHING. Definitely should not have taken this course!
Worst prof and class I have ever taken at Cap. She is a nice person but a horrible teacher. Very unclear notes and explanations for her assignments. She did not follow any of the guidelines she gave us for the assignments. I should not have taken the class. I have been getting A's in all of my other classes, but got a C in this class.
Very nice instructor, and very passionate about the material. Has a very poor teaching style. Her mid-term and final exam were vague with specific answers. Her notes were difficult to read due to her poor English. I visited her during office hours many times, however, nothing she said was any more clear than her notes. Would not recommend.
You need to show up and read the textany articles on moodle. Always willing to go over anything you are unsure about after class, via email or office hours. She wants you to do well but expects you to put in the effort. She will encourage you to send in draft copies of any assignments and she will give feedback before you submit. V. understanding
She was a wonderful teacher, who cared for her students. Lectures were easy to follow as long as you brought the prepared notes sheets to class. Midterm and Final were based mostly on lectures, and about 16 of the test was on the required reading. Essay topic (Evaluate your life basically in terms of the lecture notes)
Old school style teaching, notes are hand written short form on dry erase board. Some lectures are boooring, although the content has the potential to be more interesting. She expects a lot of detail on her exams, and marks those hard, but easier on the essays.
Gillian is an extremely passionate person when it comes to anthro, but her teaching styles are WAY too old school. Writes all notes on the board and you have to take notes or else you will be lost on the exams. Has a textbook, written by her, that is mandatory and pulls directly from this for midterm and exam. Nice person overall! :)
She is very helpful with her explanations. I took this class again because I failed the first time with another prof but Gillian was more than helpful as my second teacher. Her teaching style however is just lessons on the board and videos which you have to write out because she doesn't share notes. Good first year teacher, idk about 200 courses.
My least favourite professor at Cap. Notes have zero continuity, board writing is illegible, completely unclear as to what she expects for assignments and briefing notes so good marks are hard to get. Highest mark on midterm was an A- which isn't good. Very disappointed with this class because it's a subject I was looking forward to studying.
Her notes are so extremely terrible and messy with dashes everywhere that can sometimes make absolutely no sense. Textbook is essential if you want to pass. Extremely hard marker on the exam.
Although her lecture style involves writing vague notes on the board, which many people find a bit confusing, Gillian is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about her subject, making it a wonderful class to take. I always find myself inspired by the material and have taken 2 of her classes, just because she teaches them. Tests can be tough tho
Didn't think that I would like Anthropology but Ms Crowther gave lectures that were very clear and easy to understand. Everything she taught was interesting and makes you think of the world and the lives that are going on beyond the place you live.
In my class Crowther's attempts at classroom management repeatedly manifested as public shaming (complete with finger jabbing and isolation). As such I would STRONGLY advise anyone with mental health issues (esp. any anxiety) to avoid this prof, as she may dismiss requests for accommodation (& basic courtesy) even after they're granted by faculty.
Class average was very low. Course material is all over the map; very repetitive and intersects. Gillian is passionate about what she is teaching but be careful of voicing your own opinions as you will get shut down quickly. I'm an A average student and I received no higher than 65% on everything I submitted for this class.
Often found her lectures were unprepared and seemed to be an hour and a half of going off on tangents and rambling making it hard to take notes. Exams were fairly easily, although vague on the criteria for papers. If you offer intelligent insight during open discussion then she will like you, and grade you accordingly.
A very nice prof, who's clearly very well educated about anthropology, and is passionate about what she teaches. Notes are sort of confusing to copy down in this class, as I find you get home at the end of the day and look over the notes you copied from the board only to find that its a bunch of single words separated by dashes.
I love Gillian's personality, she's so lively and caring. But - she's a terrible lecturer. The topic itself is very abstract and subjective, but her notes are all over the board & make no sense when you come back to them. She doesn't post videos you need to know examples from on moodle, and textbook readings are a NECESSITY. Best not to skip class!
Very inspirational, average lectures level
attendance mandatory tough exams
You can tell how passionate Gillian is about her field and teaching. Her lectures are interesting, but the notes can be a little confusing- take your own notes while listening to her rather than copying from the board. You need to go to class if you want to understand the concepts. Concepts can be difficult/lots of vocab- wouldn't recommend to ESL.
Gillian is very passionate about Anthropology, but also about her students and their success. This class does not have a textbook though so you have to show up every class, and take a lot of notes to do well. I enjoyed her class, found her lovely, and would take again!
Please never take course with her. There is no any marking system and she never gives worthy marks. Exams are not so tough but she is never satisfied with the answer. Whether you write the answer of full page she will still give half marks and say it is needed to be explained more. Totally frustrated with her course.
Never ever choose this professor. Does not appreciate the efforts of the student.
Gillian is brilliant, kind, and a great teacher! Highly recommend!
Was always very kind and loves what she teaches. Used lots of examples to help explain different topics and always tried to engage the class in discussions. Exams were easy if you show up and take good notes. She's clear with what she wants and gives good study guides. You have to take lots of notes and go to class but its fun.
Gillian obviously is knowledgeable but is not very good at conveying her messages during lectures. She tests you on material from lectures but the lectures are so difficult to follow. She writes the worst notes I've ever seen, I literally can't even understand what points she's making in lectures. My least favourite prof ever. Advise to avoid her.
Gillian is brilliant. Very inspiring for the students who love anthropology. She is knowledgeable and has a great personality. I love anthropology just because of her. She knows what to teach and how to teach. Attend all classes, read the notes and materials she provides, and you will get a good mark.
Gillian is whip smart, passionate and hilarious. Her lectures are wide-ranging, but really embody the anthropological perspective. Pay attention, read the readings (they're interesting!) and ask questions if you're unsure about anything. Gillian is extremely approachable and cares a lot about her students.
Very inconsistent grading. Will easily give 100% on papers and assignment but is an irrationally difficult grader for exams. She literally laughed at the fact that 7 people in my class failed the midterm. We also had to purchase her own textbook for this class which should have been a telltale sign of what to expect for the class.
She is not the best, at least with online classes.I think zoom classes would have helped so we could discuss things. She gives very little time for tests and that is about 70% of what you are graded on. There are other profs that are better for anthro, I loved the topic but not her teaching style. The questions on the test are about the author alot
Nope nope nope. Never again. Lectures are boring and the tone of her voice doesn't help make it more interesting. I was excited to start this course but she made me hate it and not care anymore. The Biweekly tests are hard (and make up of most of the final grade) AND you don't have the possibility to know what answers you get wrong.
Her online course content is heavy, have to spend at least 2 hours a week watching films on top of reading the textbook and watching lectures. She gives very very little time on tests. It is hard to contact her, she leaves a question forum open for general questions but usually doesn't answer them...
Final exam was 34 questions in 35 minutes... WHAT??? This was the hardest course I've taken so far. Way too much homework and expectations for an INTRO course.
The fact that she has made no adaptation to her outline or teaching styles to tailor more to online learning during a pandemic is messed up........ You can study and write all you want, but it still won't be enough. Is Dr. Crowther forgetting that this is an Intro course?? Do yourself a favor... Do not take any classes with her.
Had to drop the class to save my GPA, no marking scheme, inconsistent lectures, care about only those who sit in front of her class.
Gillian is a caring professor and loves teaching. She always helps her students and gives them extra information, but it looks like switching from in-person class to online is not relatively easy for her. I hope she does a better job for the next semesters. Trust her. She is lovely, kind, and very knowledgeable.
You can tell she is a teacher that truly wants you to succeed and learn as much as you can from the course! She is understanding if something seems unfair and works with her students to help them as much as possible. Wonderful person and teacher! Very passionate about her course which is appreciated. Would love to have her as a teacher again!
READ THIS BEFORE YOU REGISTER FOR HER CLASS!!! I took this course as an INTRO, but the amount of work you get is NOT INTRO. You will have no free time. 35 question tests within 30 minutes every other week (AT LEAST 3-5 WRITTEN Q'S TOO, not open book either). 1 hour films a week with 10-20 questions, textbook readings and 1+ hour lecture slides.
Dont ever take course, she created a mess with my gpa. Was my last semester but suspended for 1 semester because she failed me
Very hard marker but friendly enough. Lectures were very heavy. She definitely knows what she's talking about but can come off as very cold sometimes.
Don't take this class unless you're willing to ruin your GPA. For an INTRO course, there's an endless amount of studying and work to do. Her tests are unnecessarily difficult, and some of the questions are completely irrelevant to the course material. She's unavailable for help, but expects you to dedicate your life to her class. AVOID! A V O I D
This professor assigns so much work and required reading/viewing material that it's as if she thinks it's the only class her students are taking during the semester. Not only that, she expects you to dedicate all of your time to her class. Too much for an intro course and doesn't even have the decency to introduce herself to her students.
Dr Crowther has an outdated style of teaching. She makes you use the PPT to listen to the lecture instead of videos. She talks a lot and doesn't even get to the points of the lecture. Her tests are super freaking difficult and heavy. She asks irrelevant questions such as "Who I worked with on the field trip abcxyz", like what??
Tests were very difficult. Given 30 minutes to complete 30 questions, 27 ish multiple choice and 3 long answers. Ridiculous.
she expects everyone to be an ANTH professor like her or something. She gave a lot of homework including film (up to 1.5hr), textbook, slides, etc. Even though it is just an Intro class, she is extREMELY HARD ON US . no matter how hard you study you will never get an A lol. She is such a joke
If you really want to learn more about anthropology, Dr. Crowther is the best professor you can choose. She is very kind and helpful and truly care about her profession. Get ready to read and work hard as she doesn't give free marks.
I had three different courses with Gillian. You will be amazed by how she is well-educated,sharp and understanding. She is incredibly passionate about the subject she teaches, and she works hard to raise the level of knowledge of her students. Highly recommend her. She is wonderful.
Gillian was an amazing prof, she's a great lecturer and the content was interesting. Grade is divided into many components which was nice, but there were at least 1.5 to 2 hours of films/documentaries to watch each week (outside of class), with questions on those included in biweekly quizzes, so keep in mind that you'll need to make time for that.
She is an average professor but expects her students to be pros! Do not expect to learn so much in her class, although she talks a lot. She acts friendly on the outside but is a bit mean inside.
I took an online course in my first year, and taking her in-person course currently, and I highly recommend taking Dr. Crowther's courses in-person. She is high-energy, her lectures are entertaining, and she genuinely cares for her students. She has tons of experience as well, and overall one of my favourite courses thus far.
Her lectures are not clear at all. Most of us have no cue what was going in the class. Have to memorize 1hr long videos for her quiz and she'll make sure that you will not get above 6 or 7 in her quiz as and most problem you'll end up failing her course.
Gillian's class is tough but Unstuckstudy helped with study prep. The lectures and tests are challenging, but engaging with the material can pay off. Consider using a mix of resources like the textbook and video content to manage the workload.
