Love Love Love her!! She is so sweet and thoughtful. Very understanding and fair, marking for essays is a little hard but overall a good class, very interesting concepts, and fun movies!
She knew her stuff but sometimes confused it. She had a hard time answering student questions.
Very pleasant to talk to. Relatively fashionable too.
FILM2401: The video selections are old and female-focused. They do not have historical significance. She is a product of her generation (late 70s) and thus picks accordingly. Presentations suffer due to lack of a grasp on technology, including presentation software and even the use of youtube. Her course also fails to comment on current issues.
He's pretty awesome. I enjoyed the lectures and the assignments were vague enough to allow for creativity, but he has a definite bias against the traditionally narrative structure. He doesn't really give any criticism.
She is not organised and I found her a little bit like a prima Donna, that is the only way I can explain her wanting u to make an appointment before you can come to her office during her office hours. I wonder why she has office hours then. If u email her or her incompetent TA (Dion) you never get a response and neither her nor her TA are helpful.
I aced this class! =)
This professor was not clear on her thoughts when it came to teaching. She read off the notes a lot and had the entire class half asleep. Her lack of timely responses to emails can cause major issues in marking so beware.
Test questions are purely from her slides. The assignment was marked tough for several students in the class, so make sure to put a lot of effort into it. Tests are very easy and the class is interesting overall.
Doesn't even know what films are on, makes tons of mistakes about them and gets characters names wrong etc. Picks random reading assignments that have like nothing to do with the films. Muller is the worst TA ever, totally useless and an unfair marker. Won't go to his office hours and gives stupid feedback.
Slides and assignments were rife with typo's, doubled words and endless grammatical errors. Slides in some cases were copied directly from online readings, and she often read from them for lectures. They were posted online. Essay comments were incomprehensible, and she was often unprepared in class. Anything I learned in 3420 I learned on my own.
I dont know how people are complaining about her! Easy class where you sit and watch movies and listen to get talk about them! Go to class, watch a couple films, take some notes, and write a couple of easy, short assignments, HOW LAZY ARE PEOPLE AT YORK?! Great profs, no complaints, a breeze for a non-film student!!
This teacher does not seem to care about her students, and does not mark fairly.
Unclear and vague lectures, harD tests with no review or explanation, unfair marker..dont even bother with this one
Completely contrived and useless lectures that half of which is copied right off the wiki page of the movie. The essay questions are stupid and really have little to do with the movie and rather just a general ethical topic. This course is only hard through obscurity that she creates.
Most useless onine instructor I have ever had. Tells you specifically not to use school email, and then never responds to email; instead posts comments on the general announcements board not to email at all her despite being told that the TA had not responded to any queries after 5 days. Do not take a course with her; you will be on your own.
She's very insightful, goes in detail analyzing texts. Very knowledgable and very interesting. She's tough/precise; you must know your stuff, even if info seems unimportant. Don't know what to expect on the exam - students= stressed/surprised by its difficulty. I like her, I look forward to continue learning with her and hope/
I took her online film course and was shocked that not only do you not have to watch the films but you also don't have to watch the lectures or do the readings. You can get away with watching 6 movies and writing 3 essays. You can send things in late. Easiest mark ever. Don't expect any feedback or reasoning for your grades though.
this course is an absolute mess! (I'm saying this and i got an A) It is a bird course IF you have a good TA, and there's only 1 easy TA out of 7 TA's, so it's all luck. I had the hardest TA and i still got an A, it was tough. Lectures will put you to sleep, assignments are the same. You're on your own in this course. Wouldn't recommend you to take
I am taking this course now and the ta's are really hard markers. The prof is interesting but is unclear about what she wants in your essays. Feedback from essays are useless. Would not recommend this prof or course.
The HBO course was not difficult at all. The assignments were fairly short (even the "long" assingment was only 3 1/2 pages) and easy. However it is impossible to do research for the paper and she is VERY unclear about what she wants from you. Participation 30% and its all online!!! what more could you ask for?
While the class is not hard (come on it's on HBO) the assignments are very vague & the ta's are extremely hard markers. I emailed the prof & she was not helpful at all. Would not recommend this class and definately not the prof!
Asks students to write ambitious essays in less than 1,000 words. Lectures were mostly focused on historical context, which contradicted her obsession with getting students to discuss the formal aspects of the film. Overall, very unclear and mostly generic. Avoid.
This was an interesting course. The assignments were straightfoward and the t.a.s were helpful with any questions. The movies were interesting and overall the course was really fun. I highly reccommend both the prof and the course.
If you are passionate about film don't take her. A perfect example of "those who can't teach" and she takes it out on you if you show a little bit of potential. She's absolutely ridiculously uneducated. Its sad to let her teach cinema. She makes film boring/class claustrophobic/and your GPA s***.
Hard marker with unhelpful feedback on assignments. Avoid if possible.
Do not take this class!!! She asks for a ridiculous amount of time and commitment for an online class. Several hours of lecture and hours of movies, then she expects you to read the textbook. She's a hard marker, she's boring and makes something as exciting as film very painful. Avoid at all costs!!!!
Absolutely disgusting commitment from the prof. and TA's in this class... I received zero feedback and absolutely no replies to any emails i sent concerning assignments, etc. The instructions are vague and lectures are extremely long. Avoid this class- it is definitely NOT a bird course
Depends entirely on your TA. Try for Alex Levant if you are planning to take this course; has online lectures but don't bother listening because they are pointless. Entirely subjective course but, in my opinion, very easy to get an A. Compare movies, talk about interesting things, COMMENT on other's discussion and you should be fine.
This is not an easy course. The movies are enjoyable and there are no exams but it is a challenging course. You are expected to create a work of art in under 1000 words for your final assignment. I liked the course for the great movies, but did not like my final grade even though I tried really hard to do well.
AVOID THIS CLASS. This professor is the worst professor, I've ever had in my entire life, and this class was online. That says something. With an online class, it's critical for the professor to respond to students, but she doesn't. The amount of disorganization this class had was unbelievable. Save yourself the headache. AVOID.
So unprofessional.. Marked my work for a 3rd year class that she must've been helping in and after I emailed for a clear reasoning of what I did wrong she has been avoiding me and claimed to have sent me it already. Does not deserve to be a professor.
She answers when you have questions, but is quite rude and constantly just refers students to the syllabus, where there was no answer, instead of actually answering your question. She gave us a redo for a quiz because of internet problems which is a plus. Course material is interesting, but overall, not a great prof. OR T.A. for that matter.
This is by far the worst Professor I have ever had. DO NOT take any course with her, especially Film 1701 - online. She was not helpful at all. Very rude and condescending. Seem to not care about students whatsoever. Very hard to get feedback or response via email. Very unclear and confusing, especially the wording of quiz questions. BEWARE.
Stay away from this course. It is not bird course at all! Your expectations of this course will be the complete opposite! Take another online course, because this course is just ridiculous, too much of a mess. Don't waste your money or your time. That's real.
Please do yourself a favor and do not take this course. She is so stuck up and rude, when you are communicating with her, it is like talking to a wall. She is the worst professor I have ever had in my life and I am someone who loves to read, learn, and loves the academic. But my experience in this course was nothing less of a great nightmare.
I've taken 9 credit core courses that require less work than her pretentious 3 credit film class. Minimum 6 hours of watching and listening. Avoid at all costs. I got out of there within two weeks.
Disorganized! The quizzes are painful. A lot of "technical" issues. Don't expect any type of direction/ feedback further than what is on the course outline. The movies are decent. Though, not very "new". The course has potential but, not with Helfield as the Professor. On the flip side, my TA has been nice but... it takes her forever to grade.
Horrible for an online 3 credit course. It requires way too much commitment (6-8 hours) weekly between, movies, lectures, and a reading. Her quizzes are hard for no reason as well as the marking on assignments. She unapologetically made a mistake resulting in a changed test date to an earlier day with only 26 hour notice. NOT WORTH THE PAIN! AVOID!
Very interesting lectures, clear cut instructions for essays and exams. Very helpful if you have questions!
Professor Helfield was more than willing to help and clarify things. I found the class super interesting and I have a new level of film analysis skills that I can use in the foreseeable future. The lectures are broken up into parts and paired with visuals so that its easy to follow; very important/interesting themes are explored throughout.
Professor Helfield is a great prof, and 1780 is great intro to themes in the Humanities. Lectures are clear and engaging, with new perspectives on classical texts-NOT a bird class where you watch movies all day. It is going to be MANDATORY to do the readings, and connect the themes. PowerPoint slides are important for multiple choice on exams.
Do NOT take this course thinking it will be easy... because it isn't. There is a lot to do in a week. Two movies to watch, a chapter to read and a discussion to participate in. If you keep up with the content, you will do great. Moodle site is disorganized and the movies were annoying to access, but it was a fascinating course. Great content!
Gillian Helfield does not care about the individual. Just about the money received. One can expect long delays in response to any emails or moodle posts sent. Very indirect when it comes to asking about grade progression in the course, or no response at all. There were no new Hollywood movies, & a lot of what was taught is irrelevant to the course.
I don't understand some of the feedback on this page. FILM 1701 is hands-down the easiest course I've taken at York so far. Very straight-forward, and as long as you keep up with deadlines and put SOME thought into your discussions, you should get no less than an A. You shouldn't really even have to interact with the prof much in this course.
If you take this class know that you must post one original discussion post and two responses to two other discussion posts for full marks every week. Its not hard but way too much work every week for a 3 credit course, do not take this class. I seriously regret enrolling in this class.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! It's the worst class I have ever taken at York! First off, no 3 credit course should involve this much work! There are two films to watch each week, and most of them are painfully long and painfully boring. Also, her lectures are painfully monotone. Also, hard marker and condescending! AVOID!!!!!
HORRIBLE. The worst most condescending professor I have ever come in contact with. She's disgusting and I hope she sees this. I also have no idea why she treats classes that are not online as an online class, ridiculous.
She's a solid professor, though I do think she could have made the lectures a bit more engaging beyond just asking questions (which were good) though, I do think she taught this class very well. I'd be excited to take a class from her again. As long as you are ready to do work (which you should be, it's University) you'll do just fine.
The breakdown of the course is great. There are no big essays or tests, just short discussion posts and quizzes which can be easily done if you put in the effort. Sometimes the moodle website is tricky to navigate and technical errors occur, but it is easy to communicate with her and the TAs. It's a good choice for an online elective.
Her lectures drone on and on. She has a monotone voice and her lectures seem to last forever. She talks so fast that I had to listen to her lecture videos 3x to get all the info. Every word she says is important since it will most likely be on her test. It is very frustrating. The only good thing is that she seems enthusiastic about the material.
Loved everything about the course except for the monotone, lengthy lectures and quizzes. This is not a bird course, be ready to do A LOT of work. The work load is too heavy for a 3 credit course to be frank. The quizzes are difficult and GIllian makes the questions too hard & specific. However, the films and insights given were amazing.
I've had Dr. Helfield twice and she's a great professor. As long as you listen to the lecture and do the assignments her courses are an easy A. I do think the work work load for a 3.0 credit course is too heavy because of the amount of films you have to watch should be 6.0 credits.
Online course, really depends on your TA. Class was easy, never watched the lectures but it was graded on tests that you could google answers for and a couple creative projects. I had to fight with my TA and Prof to get an A because they had opposing views, my TA was bad but the prof is alright, class is easy, just stay on top of a schedule.
Hardest course I have taken at York University and I am a Third year Biomedical Sciences major! If you are taking the course as a mark booster then pls don't! I had to put in 8 to 12 hours of work a week to get the mark I got and it's just not with it. The assignments are graded hard, tests are impossible and the films suck! Overall useless course!
This course was so disorganized so much confusion and "technical issues". It caused me so much unnecessary stress the grading started off as tough. I came out with a good mark because the content was relatively easy just put in some work and you'll do okay. So many people complained I think thats why the marking started to become easier.
Dr. Helfield is a great and caring person. Unfortunately, she is not very organized, due dates were not clearly stated and changed often. The moodle site was not updated from years ago, links were not working and we had to watch movies from unsecure sites.
FILM 1701 was a great course! Prof Helfield was very organized and her lectures were really interesting. The movie choices were great and the textbook was straightforward but this course definitely has a big time commitment (2 movies, 30ish pg reading, 1 forum post per week).
This course required way more work than any of my major courses, and this was only an elective. Unnecessary work and not enough time in between due dates! We have other course work to do too you know! Kind of disorganized and lectures are extremely boring so try hard to pay attention. I was excited for this course but it was just depressing.
I would recommend staying FAR away from this course. While interesting, Gillian's lectures are so wordy and very hard to pay attention to. You are graded on a lot of things that are not worth a lot, but take up so (too) much time. My TA was especially unavailable and tough. f you're taking this course for fun/easy class, look elsewhere.
Excellent course and interesting material/ easy for out of major . However it eats up a lot of your time between lecture, Textbook, 2 movies and forum + replies. If you are prepared to do a lot of straight forward work. Then this course is for you.
I've taken two online courses with Gillian, both were quite difficult in my personal opinion, and I have taken both in-class film courses, and online non-film courses. It's important that you TAKE NOTES during the LENGTHY lectures, and prepare yourself for her monotone and nasal voice. Wouldn't reccomend, unless you can handle the heavy course load
This course had way too much to do to be a 1000 level course. Quizzes every single week on lectures that were way too long and densely packed. Forum postings every other week along with five other assignments throughout the 12 week course.
Doesn't give accommodations for most assignments - unfair for students with disabilities. Difficult to communicate with - takes long to respond to e-mails and has an unapproachable, rude attitude. Course was too heavy for a 1st year - long, boring lectures with dense readings, and weekly forum posts with 2 responses, quizzes and 4 assignments.
She is a very tough grader. You can put as much care and effort into your writing but she will always find a fault in it. It is near impossible to get an A because she does not have any specific grading criteria. Her course has A LOT of work in it, and she is probably the worst prof ever when it comes to leniency for due dates. I do not recommend.
This course is good if you aren't taking a lot of courses because it is quite demanding. Long lectures (ex 30 mins) and you need to watch 2 films per week along with posting a tutorial discussion and replying to 2 other people. I only had this course along with 2 others and I did pretty well.
FILM1701 was an absolute bird course. Weekly forum posts were tedious but not difficult at all - I got 100% on every single one. Helfield's lectures can be a bit dry but as long as you take decent notes on them you will be more than fine for the 2 online quizzes.
I took FILM1701 with Gillian last year and was very excited for the course. Gillian made this course hell on Earth for me. It was an online course, but she managed to give out more than 10 hours of work per week. This included 2 movies you had to watch (sometimes 3 hours each), 2 discussion posts, and a weekly assignment/test. She is also very rude
Probably the worst professor I've had at York. Her lectures were dry, but the issue lays within the way that she grades papers. She outlines a specific criteria for success, and then penalizes you for following it. Going as far as denying things that she said herself in lecture. The countless notes she leaves on the paper are just childish.
This course does not teach you anything if you are not interested in pursuing a film career. For a class that was considered a "bird course" it was not, It was way to time-consuming for an elective course, especially on top of worrying about getting the best grades in our majors. Assignments every week, double assignments every other week, BADDD!
I was concerned at first when seeing this low feedback, but after this course i change my mind. She is a nice prof, even though we have to read alot. But if you know the basic thing on the lecture you could easy pass because she tries to give you grade eventhough you are wrong, you only need idea. She also boost everyones grade. Thanks you prof
I only read through the slides and read the online summaries of the novels. You only need to understand the concepts and themes and make some connections to pass this class. A lot of reading and writing for the weekly journals. Her feedback sometimes contradicted her own instructions which was annoying but overall a fairly easy class.
Awful.
Prof is also inaccessible and DOES NOT want you sending her emails or setting up zoom meetings. Pre-recorded online lectures are boring. The coursework is heavy for a 3 credit course. You are expected to watch 1.5 - 2.5 hour films and make multiple journal entries every single week. You lose marks if you submit your journals on the weekends.
She does not make herself accessible by not giving out her email to students, which is already a bad start. I was unable to contact her when passport York was down which added a lot of anxiety to her class. I can tell she is passionate about film but when I reached out to her for academic support she did not give it. My TA was cool though!
If you choose this class because you want to "having fun", then RUN AWAY. Do you know that the professor does not leave her or TA's contact information, and only makes it painful to ask questions on the moodle (response is very slow)? Did you know that it only gives you due day is ahead of schedule on the title of dashboard? If u dont, run away.
I doubt this class would be as hard as I say it is if you actually show up. I personally hated the online class and never actually went. Overall the course is heavy in terms of homework and tests. Dont leave anything until last minute or you will regret it.
This class was physically painful, not only because of the dry course material and the repetitive lectures but also because Prof. H didn't make any boundaries. In a lecture of over 100 people, it got treated like a tutorial with people continuously cutting her off and adding points. This turned the boring class to being sometimes an hour over.
Professor Helfield is very kind and understanding. She is also very accommodating to her students especially at the end of the year as she knows we have a lot of anxiety and stress from other courses. Her lectures are very detailed so get ready to keep up with her notes. The assignments and exams were based on all lectures and ready. So show up
3 TIMES the assignments as for every other class. The assignments are also difficult to do because theyre essentially repeats of other assignments she has you do (why would you make us do discussion post responses AND journal responses??) Also unclear rubrics so its super hard to know what she wants and get a good grade
I took this course as an elective because it looked easy on the surface - watch a movie a week, write a couple discussion posts a week, and a journal biweekly. It wasn't until the prof started contradicting what multiple TA's had told us and it was too late to go back and fix our posts. Clearly not transparent with her class. Don't take this course
I do not recommend taking this course as your elective even though it seems that it is easy. It is challenging, overwhelming and frustrating. You have to write so much for it, like six journals that are like six essays besides the final essay and the discussion forum and highest mark they give you on assignments is 90 which drops your overall mark
Main complaint is for the people who run the course. Professor is extremely disconnected with her students and the course itself. Only posts lectures, opens up discussion posts, and makes announcements. TA especially did not give feedback on discussion posts. Communication with TA takes long via eClass message, not allowed to have TAs email.
No real complaints given how idiosyncratic the whole course syllabus and attendance with asynchronous courses can be. Marks were rather vague, and had no real responses, but hadn't had much of a complain in regards to difficult grading.
I like this professor quite a bit, she is very accommodating and her lectures are super interesting. The entire class is online, with a film and usually three 20 min lectures to go with the film. There are a lot of essays, and discussions, but its really not that bad since they are all due far apart from each other.
Disappointing & inflated course. Gillian does a massive disservice to the film department and students. Unorganized, contradictory and arbitrary marked. TAs lack expertise and professionalism. No accountability. York needs to reevaluate this course & she should not be teaching if this is how she runs her courses. Such a wasting my time and money.
Very disappointing course. Its unorganized, zero of feedback, and missing materials made it very frustrating. This course could have been fun and interesting but it was very phoned in by Dr. Helfield and the TAs were not clear or helpful at all. A real shame but skip this course.
Course is pretty easy. New section of movies every two weeks with a discussion post to do. She expects content from her video lectures to be used in the posts. Two assignments pretty easy. I will say the marking is a little stingy. No final exam or tests. If you need an elective with little effort, you can do pretty well in this course.
Write your desired mark on a sheet of paper. Walk to your nearest shredder. insert paper. I strongly suggest you buy a thesaurus because the teleprompter essay style lectures are impossible to understand with run-on sentences and supererogatory words (might as well test your thesaurus skills now). Oh did I say clear grading criteria? More like none
Arbitrary marking. Dr. Helfield is the worst prof I've had throughout my time at York. Well done!
Definitely not recommended at all. This is supposedly to be an easy course, but she makes it random and complex. Avoid at all costs.
Worst course and professor I took in my entire York experience. Her lectures were unfocused and boring, with deep dives on irrelevant topics. The course was about New Waves and took 5 weeks to get to this topic. Assignment instructions were unclear and weekly quizzes would open/close at random times without notice. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!
Really unorganized on eClass, making assignments and weekly work hard to navigate. One assignment even had two different due dates until students asked for clarification. The TAs mark hard despite vague instructions, and discussion posts become an automatic zero if late. There's no late penalty for them, and she gives no room for leniency.
Her eclass is very messy and unorganized. I can never find the right thing in a quick and simple manner. Her videos are very boring and doesn't have much energy and she honestly looks like she doesn't even want to teach to begin with. Shes doesn't seem motivated at all and doesn't seem to care much about student well being and stress.
Her eclass is very messy and confusing. I'd have to struggle to find what I need. The TA are not at all helpful or understanding and the lectures are both boring and useless. She doesn't give off and active nor positive energy and doesn't even look like she cares about teaching at all. I genuinely can't say anything positive about her or the TAs.
