A wonderfully intelligent, thoughtful, caring professor. Gillian has an extensive knowledge of music, and makes this class highly enjoyable. She is always available for help, and makes an effort to interact with students. She is more than fair to students, and makes this course worth taking. If you enjoy music, you'll love this class.
What a great prof. She made me want to keep taking music classes because she was easy to understand and made it fun to listen to her lectures. If anyone was confused about what she was saying, she would take the time to explain :)
Good prof. 2 midterms and an essay. Alot to know for midterms but she gives you practically everything you need to know before. Posts notes online. Brings in videos. Interesting class. Take a class with her if you have the chance!!
She's a great young professor which means she is very understanding. Tests are fair and lectures are interesting. A very nice person and cares about her students. Definitely take MUS 505 with her if you have the chance.
As a third year student i'm at the point where it's weird when you have a prof who actually cares about their students. I wish more profs were like her. I LOVED this class, it was so interesting. if you love music you really will love the class! the history of popular music is so interesting! She ends the class in a ROCKING WAY! She's AWESOME!!!!!!
what a great class but that's because she's a great professor. she has insane knowledge in every musical genre there is! wish there were more classes like this.
Easy prof, easy to understand, cares about her students :)
She's a very nice professor! Good marker as well. Her slides are very detailed and helpful. Listening quizzes are not hard. Her tests aren't bad either. Take her class, you'll only do bad if you don't show up and don't spend a day or two studying for her tests.
Great Prof!
She is an awesome prof! The first professor that i really admire. The course is not hard. I didn't buy a textbook and still get A- for it. Study her slides for midterms and final, do well on your essay and you will be fine. She is really helpful and considerate. If you have any questions, ask her and she will try her best to help you.
Gillian is an AMAZING prof! She's very nice and will help you when ever you need the help. She loves what she teaches and makes you enjoy her class. If you was a class where you can chill and work with ease take this class. I loved Gillian and would recommend to take this class!
Gillian is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She is so understanding and a really great professor. She loves what she does and really made the course amazing! I was going through some tough stuff when I took her class and she was SO understanding.
Not much to say. She is just the best professor I had! You do not have to attend all her classes, but after first class, you will want to attend her classes no matter what.
Very good prof. I was surprised to see calculus and linear algebra show up on the exam, so be ready for lots of math in this course.Have a few shots before the final exam to help with the jitters.
Best prof I have ever had. She is so nice, understanding and is a great teacher! Very clear with instructions.
She's so pretty and pleasant! She is nice, very clear and helpful. She makes the course very interesting to learn! :)
She's awesome!!! THE BEST PROF AT RYERSON! She's extremely helpful and nice! She makes the course interesting and I would definitely take another course with her!
I LOVE GILLIAN. That's what she makes you call her, too. I will never take a music class that isn't taught by her. She makes sure everyone understands and gives a lot of extra help for assignments. She's so funny and loves what she teaches. One of the best profs I've ever had. Usually ends up extending the final essay deadline.
Great Prof. Extremely helpful, very flexible with deadlines and due-dates. She is an easy marker as long as you pay attention in class and do the work. One of the best ones at Ryerson.
absolutely amazing! spent 5 hours on the essay and ended up with 80%. if you actually try , you'll get A's. I didn't but she I still ended up with an 80. Pray that she teaches next year because she said her contract might be ending soon !
God bless this woman! She is by far one of the sweetest ladies I have ever come across. Never met a prof who cares this much abt his/her students' success.
She may seem nice, but when I asked her out she said no.
Friendly and a somewhat lenient marker however the real problem lies with the content. Most of it is boring and her slides do not help either (no formatting; white background with TONS of memorization for tests). This class is DIFFICULT for those not used to music theory as many difficult terms are used. Easy projects/ essay but DIFFICULT tests.
Gillian is a fantastic professor. Her listening tests and midterms were very easy because she posted the exact information needed to succeed. If you get this prof you should consider yourself blessed. She is so helpful and kind. I am so happy I chose this elective. I would definitely take a class with her in the future.
GILLIAN'S THE BEST
Gillian is one of the best profs I've had at Ryerson. Her lectures are clear, and easy to understand. She gives detailed outlines of exactly what she's looking for in assignments and gives you a lot of preparation materials for tests. She gives great feedback on assignments and is very approachable. I'd definitely take another class with her!
Shes so nice, her tests are basically lecture notes and her review packages help you out so much. For the essay grammar plays a pretty big role in your grade be careful so you don't lose those marks, podcast was fun choose any song and talk about it shes very helpful and this class was so interesting start to finish.
Gillian is really approachable and overall I think she's fair with her grading. The tests do require a bit of memorization but if you're interested in music or have some background knowledge already, you can do well. I made the mistake of leaving studying to the last minute for the tests but I do believe an A is very doable.
took mus 101 with her as well. shes straight forward. power points are key!
Gillian Turnbull is very nice and friendly. The study guide that she provided for the final exam was very helpful. There are many articles to read for this course but I learned a lot from reading the articles. I liked that she posted the slides from the power point on Brightspace. I enjoyed being in her class!
Best prof ever... I LOVE HER.
Great professor, 10/10 would recommend !!!
Gillian is amazing! She is so easy going, passionate about music, and has great lectures. I had her for MUS 211 and 505 and they were both my favourite classes by far. Would definitely recommend taking one of her classes if you are interested in music.
She is the best prof I've had, she makes you excited to learn. She also seems to genuinely care about the success of students. Highly recommend taking a course with her.
You're better off teaching yourself all the content and skip all her useless classes. Be aware of LISTENING TEST something I never understood the purpose/goals of this evaluation, seem like the professors way of robbing students of 10%. Avoid only if alternative professors are available for this course.
really knowledgable!! lecture heavy, listened to good songs. assignments were reasonable. only downside was participation worth 10%, and the weekly reading questions were 10-20 questions (pretty heavy), considering she didn't tell you if they're accepted until end of class (so you'd end up doing all this work for nothing)
Gillian is fair and she tells you exactly what she expects, her study guides for the midterm, final, and listening quizzes are helpful. She explains concepts clearly and the text is easy to read through. Her weekly reading quizzes are easy marks (10% total) and I recommend listening to the songs posted in advance. For the essay, office hours is key
MUS 505 is by far my favourite class that I've ever taken. It's super interesting, and if you love music and culture, you'll actually enjoy coming to class. There were reading quizzes every week, but they were short and simple, two listening quizzes that are more like fill in the blanks, one essay and an easy final exam. Gillian is really great!
Very nice and approachable prof. Her slides are very helpful and she basically tells you what will be on the tests. Gives a lot of help with your essay and is very flexible. Great Prof!
Fantastic prof! Very clear in terms of what she expects for the essay and makes very fair, easy, and straightforward exams. Reading quizzes every week are super short and are practically free marks. There are many evaluations in the course, but they were all quite easy. Overall, the content is interesting and Gillian is super nice and knowledgable.
If you've never studied music before I do not recommend this class. So much to memorize for the tests and a lot of musical terminology used, if you're not use to you will have a hard time understanding/following. Had to take an upper liberal & this course was the most work out of any of my classes and that's coming from a 3rd-yr business student.
Gillian's a nice prof who's very passionate about the things she teaches and lectures are never boring. The class is a quick music history course over the past 100 years or so and as a result it starts off really slow and boring. She does her best to make it entertaining. Other than that, she's really friendly and easy to talk to.
The best prof ive had for a liberal so far! Made me appreciate and discover alot of new music and genres as well. Tests are simple as long as you read the textbook/slides and the marking is well spread out so if you do bad on one thing you can easily make up for it. Overall, a great prof!
This prof was absent for classes 8-10. Criteria is not clear. Listening test's have no connection to the course content. 0/10. Would not recommend.
The lectures are really interesting, and Gillian is good at engaging the class into the lecture for discussions too. Super recommended course for music lovers, but there is quite a bit of work involved. The course has two listening quizzes, an essay, a podcast, a midterm, a final exam and weekly quizzes online.
One of the best profs that I've ever had at Ryerson. The course material is very interesting as are the lectures. She seems really passionate about the course content and that fed off of me. Listening test was fun to study and a unique testing method. Lot of material to study for both midterm and exam, but both are straightforward. Highly recommend
Such an inspiring prof. A must take class for any music lover.
She is a strong lecturer and she cares a lot about her students. To quote her "Hey I don't want to bore you guys by telling you about my weekend how was yours?" Lol. Good sense of humour and she can ask the right questions to stimulate a class discussion "Do you think Ed Sheeran is an authentic musician?" Highly recommend her, fun class, fair marks
Gillian is the best professor I have ever had. She is very engaging in her lectures and I was constantly interested in the course because of her. Very helpful when it comes to essays she always was available to give me feedback. If you never had a class with her you're missing out! 100% would take again.
She is one of the few professors that actually teach. Very passionate about the subject
The only class I look forward to
AMAZING. She is so sweet, caring, enthusiastic, and genuine. You can tell she really loves teaching, and music. She knows what she's talking about. She is an easy marker, show up to class and you will do well. She truly cares about her students doing well. Gillian, you are the best! Thank-you so much for being so inspirational.
This prof is great! Really enjoyed her lectures and she was able to keep them fun and interesting. She applies her real life experiences to her teaching which makes it much more personal. Definitely knows what she's talking about and delivers it in a great way. Would definitely take her class again!
She is a sweetheart! She makes class personal and interesting so you will not get bored. She is a very fair marker and you can basically talk to her about any of your interest in music. She also very helpful with your essay topics if you go to her office hours. This was literally the one class that didn't stress me out during my third year.
Gillian is very passionate about what she teaches. Her lectures are fun, interesting, and engaging! She is super funny and caring. Genuinely wants to see students succeed and offers a lot of help outside of class (essay writing workshops, etc). The course is pretty easy if you pay attention in lecture and read through the slides. 100% recommend!
Gillian is a great prof! She's super chill and easy going, and also gives good feedback for assignments. The weekly D2L quizzes are an easy way to boost your mark and the other assignments were relatively straightforward as well. I recommend!
having a musical background (knowledge of music theory) means you can do well in this course. Students with no prior music knowledge will struggle. Gillian is some type of freelance writer and therefore she is a EXTREMELY hard marker when it comes to grading the Essay worth 35% of the grade (worth more than exam). Grading criteria is not disclosed
Amazing professor and person. Gives good feedback on assignments and gets marks back in a timely manner. Did my exam today at 12pm and had my exam grade by midnight the same day. Highly recommend taking one of her classes if you have the chance.
Gillian has been one of the most dedicated and caring instructors I've ever had throughout my academic career.. No seriously her passion for music is contagious and she always make all her teaching relatable with personal stories. She also has a really good sense of humour that livens up the class. Very understanding and a easy /fair marker!
Hard marker. Had given 2 surprise pop quizzes this semester. Power Point slides are redacted before being uploaded to D2L. Very fast marker. She managed to grade all our exams in 24 hours, which included, multiple choice scan tron and long answers + essay.
Dr. Turnbull is an enthusiastic and caring professor. I enjoyed learning about Mongolian throat singing, Berlin techno, and L.A. rap among many other music cultures. I would recommend this class to upper year students as the essay is graded easily if you have some personal connection to your topic and are experienced in conducting sound research.
I've had the honour of being in two of Gillian's classes and would take her 50 more times if I could. Gillian is an excellent lecturer and constantly keeps you engaged in the course content. Gillian is knowledgeable and passionate about the course content and always there for extra help. If you haven't taken a class with Gillian you're missing out!
She is one of my favourite profs. She is such a kind woman and really cares about her students and wants them to do well. Her grading criteria is very clear and is easy to do well on. Lectures were interesting and engaging.
This prof is passionate about this topic and that much is obvious. Going to lecture can sometimes be fun but oftentimes feels unnecessary as she reads directly off the class slides. Does a few different assignments/quizzes that you can use to boost your mark but then is a tough grader when it comes to essay. Overall a good choice.
She's a gem and probably one of the best profs I've had during my time here. Super accessible outside of class time, super passionate about music and super relatable. She understands plenty of different artists and genres. Class is about normal difficulty; you need to pay attention and put in the effort for anything higher than a B.
Decent prof, but class was not "birdy"
Gillian was delightful, she was engaging and passionate about the course material. She's a real person, not like one of those robot profs. I found her easy to talk and relate too, maybe because we share the same favourite band and thats really all we talked about but regardless I think anyone would enjoy being in her class. She's cute too. lol
AMAZING Professor. She is very passionate about music and extremely knowledgeable. She posts all the lecture slides online, if you study for the exams and the listening tests you will do well. There is an essay but it's extremely interesting and fun to write. She is woke about social justice issues and includes that in the class at times as well.
Such a wonderful professor!!! She was incredibly accommodating and patient with me with one paper I had a hard time finishing due to personal life stuff (she let me get an Incomplete and take my time writing it). I learned so much from her class also and had a lot of fun in it! She is genuinely amazing and I really appreciate her kindness.
She's a great lecturer, she's very passionate and engaging. However outside of class you really have to put in the work. There are weekly reading quizzes, and if you don't like reading 30 pages of dry, graduate level text each week then this course isn't for you. This is only an elective but I worked harder for this course than my program courses..
She's a very caring teacher. this is the first time the women in music course has been run but i found it very interesting and inspiring. i recommend it! she was very flexible in accommodating our needs as a class and was very receptive to criticisms. I would love to have her for another course.
Professor Turnbull is exceptionally knowledgeable in music and social issues. The weekly lectures are enjoyable to watch and full of important knowledge. The examples of music provided really helped me understand the concepts of each topics. The podcast assignment was really fun to make. I would highly recommend Professor Turnbull and MUS 503.
She lectures really well, gives fair assignments but gives really long readings and the content is a little too SJW at times but overall it was a good class
Gillian is a wonderful prof even with this course being asynchronous. She is kind, knowledgeable, passionate and is there to help students. Midterm/exam are MC and she gives study guides too. I learned a lot about music - I would recommend as an elective! Do the work and you will get a great grade. :)
Gillian is a great prof for this class. She was really accessible outside of class and everything was asynchronous so you can go at your own pace. The lectures were interesting and podcast was fun to record
Overall with course migrating to online platforms, I found Ms. Turnbull to be so supportive, friendly, and helpful. She responds promptly to emails and has a way of making you feel like you matter. I found the course the right balance of challenge and creativity, yet not overwhelming. The culminative essay is the best! Would recommend the course.
Take it! This course is more than learning music. While it teaches you musical terms, it also teaches you about music's connection to capitalism; sexuality; feminism and gender; race; protesting; Indigenous Peoples, reconciliation, and their contributions on modern day American rock music. Dr. Turnbull is authentic, caring, fun, and knowledgeable.
Loved taking this class with Gillian! Was the most interesting elective I have ever taken. You do not have to be musically inclined to do well. Would highly recommended it.
Love that everything can be done on your own time. There are also not too many assignments or tests. Easy course, good prof, and def one of the best upper liberals.
Dr. Turnbull is one of the best professors, not only in terms of kindness but also in terms of teaching. The course was completely asynchronous this semester, but her recorded lectures were so thorough, engaging, and filled with so much insightful knowledge about popular music. The assignments and tests were straightforward and quite fun to do!
Gillian is one of the most straight-forward profs you can have. Her tests/assignments are M/C right from class reading/lecture, she gives you plenty of tips and test prep, and gives you a chance to earn up to 5% in extra-credit. She also responds over email quickly and you can tell she cares for her students. One of the easiest A's you can get.
Honestly one of the most interesting electives I have ever taken. I thought there was a lot of assignments and tests but nothing difficult. She's a fair marker and the assignments were good bc u got to pick ur own interests and write an essay about it. She gives a lot of choice and even gives 5% bonus marks. She's really kind, great elective:)
I absolutely loved Gillian, super organized and supportful during online asynchronous classes. Provides thorough instructions for the essay or guidelines for the exams. Also added additional 5% extra credit for reading quizzes. Content is a lot but straightforward; she is a very engaging professor! Highly recommend.
Gillian is a nice and caring prof. Her lecture content is very interesting and applicable to your personal knowledge of music. Her grading criteria and assignment outlines were very helpful and specific and straightforward which I highly appreciate from a prof.
Gillian is such an amazing lecturer and well-rounded person. I'm really happy that decided to take both MUS520 and MUS503 with her this past year as I feel that I've learnt a lot and have had the most wonderful experience. She has so much knowledge to give, has relevant material & is incredibly kind and accommodating. Take her classes if you can!
super kind and accommodating. her lectures are wonderful and the courses contents are very interesting. she provides great feedback and is a great professor, if you ever have the chance to take MUS503 with her you should def take it
One of the best profs ever! Marks fairly. You just need to put in effort into your work:)
She is very nice and welcoming for questions at business hours, willing to take other lessons from her.
Great prof overall! Listening quizzes are pretty intense but her bonus quizzes are very helpful to improve your grade. The final essay was really enjoyable. Would recommend Professor: Turnbull
Best prof ever! Her lectures are so much fun, interesting, and engaging. I learned so much from her GO TAKE HER CLASS RIGHT NOW.
Amazing prof with fun and engaging lectures, genuinely learned a lot from her and she made me want to go to classes. Highly recommend if you get a chance to take her class
Content is easy but Gillian wants to make students have a harder time by over complicating essays and music quizzes. The essays are overly complicated and marks are taken off for silly things like "overly complicated words" Losing over 5% for every little thing means your setting students up for failure. Pretty pathetic.
includes way too many "preliminary" rules for essay writing -- refuses to follow a distinctive formatting (will choose chicago but change almost every rule) and will deduct 10% if you miss a space or punctuation ONCE. setting her students up to fail. the way she imposes such strict rules on things that have 0 pertinence to her course is ridiculous
and gillian, we can tell you wrote all these good reviews yourself....
Gillian was one of the best profs I had at TMU. Her lectures prepare you very well for quizzes and she keeps the content very engaging. I learned a lot in her course, highly recommend!!!
I loved Gillian so much! She is such an engaging professor and accommodates you. She wants you to do well. Probably the best prof I have had in my 4 years. Definitely take her class if you get the chance.
