I like him, I dunno, maybe it's just me--teaches well; adds humor; not too hard
not the most dynamic prof, but sometimes humorous, an enjoyable class
Great teacher. You learn a ton. Kind of difficult.

Bring a pillow to class, he covers about 30 min. of material in a 70 min. class.
Not a difficult class, not easy either. Fairly interesting.
Sounds like the boss from Office Space. Nice guy, boring professor.
Nice guy, classes boring. Hard quizes, and hard to get an A on papers
kind of random in grading; tough in humanities for no reason
Nice guy, but he forgets that he's teaching college, and not graduate, students.
Dr. Harp is the man! Anyone who disagrees is a stupid freshman.
Intelligent but boring for the most part, loving the subject keeps you awake

fairly stress-free class, a bit mundane unless you enjoy history but he tries :)
great teacher... also he let me make up a quiz when i slept through his class
Superbly crafted lectures, good humor and very kind.
Intelligent, witty, a wonderful teacher
Awful professor! We still warn freshman of harp's huma 101 class. He seriously is one of the worst professors at GCC.
smokes the tweeds
He's a great advisor, awesome in British history, but terribly boring elsewhere. However, he does give you a second chance if you fail his papers, to which he never gives A's
Extremely dry and ambiguous in his teaching.
Dry sense of humor, tests are decent, tough grader on papers
The negative student rating here (dated 3/4/03) was written by a jerk who should drop out of college. Dr. Harp is a very well prepared and clear lecturer.
That was one of the worst classes ever. Nice man, but very hard. And I had it at 2:30-3:45, perfect time to take a nap!
So boring. Could not stay awake at all. Test on the least important and trivia detials. You will never get an A on a paper. Everything you do is never good even if he helps you and you do what he said to do. Worst time.
The student who wrote on 4/2/03 is clearly insane due to his view of Dr Harp. Are we talking about the same man?? He's awful!!!!
Dr. Harp is hard, but he knows his stuff, teaches the truth, and I've always trusted what he's told me (unlike some other huma profs . . .)
Dr. Harp is the best history professor GCC has, and I've had them all. His lectures are highly organized and interesting. He is a true scholar. His class may be hard but you will learn a lot.
He once claimed that he would make a great Hitler youth. It's comments such as this that all of a sudden wake you up and make you wonder which country you fell asleep in. You then realize it's just Harp's dryer-than-dust sense of humor.

A very well prepared lecturer and a sensitive professor. High standards but generous and fair. Lazy students don't like him (see a few of the other raings).
I found Harp difficult during my time at GCC, but since I've been in graduate school I have realized how much I am indepted to him. He is a dry lecturer, but he forces you to think more than many other teachers. And he really works on your writing.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had at this college. Not only is he difficult to understand, ambiguous in his assignments, but his dry lectures were enough to turn even an eager mind towards apathy. Please avoid him if possible!
He's an avid speed-skating. You can work your heart out, or not work at all and still end up with a B. Hope and pray that he doesn't use the Conkin book when you take this class. Don't listen to him when he says that it's ok to use secondary resouces.
A caring professor with interesting and humorous lectures. Hist 400 is demanding but you learn a lot. Students who leave papers to last minute don't get high grades.
Simply wonderful. Really makes you think. Work hard and you will do well but Harp is not a grade inflater.
i love gillis
His personality is sooo dry that it takes extreme effort to stay awake, never brings his handouts to class and repeats the same half sentence 4 to 5 times before he moves on. Lectures are boring and long and have harp's poor attempt at humor. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. My opinion.
A generous teacher always eager to help. Lectures are clear and engaging. Not easy but really worth it. Students used to easy profs. probably should look elsewhere.
Harp was very dry and was hard to stay awake through. He was a very nice guy tho and I liked him as a person. However, he was a inconsistant lecturer and had no powerpoints. He would stand up front and just lecture, no note helpers.
BORING. Avoid there are much better profs
One of the worst professors at Grove City. He has stained my passion for history with his horribly unclear assignments and his unfocused lectures. Leaving anything of military importance out if his lectures, I have major gaps in my knowledge of American history.
Is this the same teacher? (Harp a Nazi? Right...) Seemed very organized, excellent lectures. Really helped me on my paper. Not easiest for Huma but learned a lot.
Great teacher. He is great for cultural history but a little weak on the military issues. He is very hard on the subjective part of his exams. His lectures are informative yet entertaining (and hilarious to some odd souls). Harp's greatest strength though is outside the classroom, he really makes an effort to get to know his students.
Does not focus on the interesting events of U.S. history. Spent 30 minutes on WWII. Tests and papers can be difficult but he is always willing to help if you are having trouble.
Gillis Harp is one of the most responsible academics at Grove City, and that is saying something. I cannot help but assume that detractors on this sight are only marginally interested in the real work of history. Harp is a thoughtful and incredibly enlightening professor and scholar, as well as one of the few interesting publishing professors at the Grove. His classes are incredibly stimulating, and his grading of papers is thorough and rigorous. If you want to learn, Harp is your man.
What can you say about, Gillis? Boring lectures, goes off on tangents often. His tests aren't bad, and he grades the paper fairly.
Dry, boring, gave lectures in a monotone that almost put me to sleep pretty much every class.
Unbelievably boring. His class is like watching paint dry. He will put you to sleep in fifteen minutes flat. Here's some advice: bring a pillow and sleeping back to this guy's class...he has no emotion, no inflection, and no way of keeping you awake.
Harp is a great model of Christian scholarship. He is pretty tough on papers but only because he wants to help students. He is always willing to talk to students out if they are having trouble or if they are interested in exploring a historic topic not usually covered in class. Exp has shown that serious students love Harp while slackers don't.
I hope to just stay awake at the beginning of every class
I found his class boring
Harp is the dryest person I've ever taken a class with. His command of history is solid, but oh dear lord is he a snooze.
He definately always knows what he's talking about...but the class hardly ever knows what he's talking about.

Many people thought class was a bit slow, but if you are into history, you'll enjoy it. Short quiz (10 points) every week which are easy if you read the chapters. Lots of emphasis on Building a Christian Worldview. He makes the midterm and final clear and manageable.
Dr. Harp is an excellent historian. Quizzes (w/ rare ex cr) are straightforward if you seriously do the readings. Take good notes on lectures and study a bit and the exams are smooth. Paper is graded rigorously but helpfully. Don't try to blow anything off. Harp can be funny, but not overthetop/cheesy (Schaefer). You learn more than the other 101s.
I was a history major at GCC and look back on my classes with Dr. Harp (years later) as some of the most rewarding and memorable. Most of the comments thus far have been from students of huma 101, if you have the chance to take a class from Dr. Harp for something he's really passionate about (i.e. intellectual history) you'll find it enlightening.
Harp is boring. There is no question about that; plan on checking your email, facebook, and whatever else about 30 times per class. His class is quite easy to get a B in but hard to get a straight A. I never got less than a 90 (without dropped scores) and I still got an A-. He asks mostly obvious questions and an absurd trivial question or two.
Dude powerpointed us to death, i was usualy out 15 minutes into class but his test and quizes are fair as long as you read for the quizes.
Good professor and scholar. He encourages discussion and intellectual thought. His courses let students learn for themeselves. Anyone who does't like him is probably either A.) Not a history major or B.) A freshman.
He's boring, makes bad jokes, and doesn't like technology, but his tests are fair and he's easy to understand assuming you can hold your attention.
So. Boring. Entertain yourself by watching your classmates sleep. He's drier than dust, but really is brilliant, and knows his subject. A nice person, just boring. Tests almost entirely on lecture notes, so don't totally space out. Compare notes with others before tests. Don't spend too much time worrying about the books, especially W. Heritage.
He's a really nice guy, but helplessly uninteresting to listen to. He's pretty helpful, if you have questions he'll help you. Has weekly quizes and is tougher on papers than most 101 professors. I'd rather take someone else.
Very good.
I guess a good guy. Its just a boring class.
Really nice and really helpful, but his classes are the only history classes I have trouble paying attention in. It's not hard to avoid getting a C grade or lower in this class but it's pretty tough to get an A.
Well organized and clear lectures. Helpful outside of class. Some non-academic students don't love his Huma class, I guess.
Lectures are slightly scattered and boring. The weekly quizes are easy if the reading is done although, some of the reading is difficult. He is forgetful and assigns work/ test details last minute.
There are far better professors out there for this class. Simply put it is very difficult to pay attention in class as he finds a way to make history dull. Others in the history department are excited to teach and give galvanizing lectures. Dr. Harp does not.
RIDICULOUSLY boring class. His tests are insanely difficult, and he is a very tough paper grader.
While he knows his facts, he is tedious and slow. Very idealistic about professor-teacher relationship ("our journey", etc.). Not too helpful and tests on impractical knowledge.
While he knows his facts, he is tedious and slow. Very idealistic about professor-teacher relationship ("our journey", etc.). Not too helpful and tests on impractical knowledge. He quizzes on the textbook chapters--easy if you do the reading.
the class can be boring. the lectures can be hard to follow sometimes. that being said he does have his funny moments and it is clear that he is a nice man, he is educated, and he is helpful
Takes history of ideas approach. Well prepared and clear, well-organized. Non-history majors don't like the high grading standards, but you can learn a lot.
Clearly a very educated man. I thought his tests were fairly difficult, but it's probably because I devoted minimal time or interest to this class since I had so much to do for my other classes. Lectures were sometimes boring, but you can tell he's a very caring and helpful individual.
Stay away from Harp unless you are looking for some serious nap time in the middle of the day. The dude is nice enough but his class is boring as all get out and his quizzes tests and papers are unclear and deceptively hard. Also watch out for his jokes that Im pretty sure he practiced in front of the mirror before class and his psalm reading voice
Dr. Harp is one of my favorites at GCC. Yes, his lectures are somewhat dry, but he's there to teach you, not to entertain you. His lectures are organized, the tests and papers are difficult but fair, and the quizzes are generally a boost to my grade.
One of my favorite professors at GCC. Yeah, he's a little dry, but he's there to teach you, not entertain you. Tests and papers are hard but fair, and the quizzes are generally a boost to your grade. Great guy.
I like Harp because he's probably the most objective grader in the history department. Attendance is taken each class. If you get below a B in any of Harp's classes you aren't trying and if you get above a B you're a prodigy. Don't expect a lot of help, he'd rather be doing research for his next book on an obscure 1800s theologian than talking to u
Easily the drollest professor on campus, his razor wit is belied by his deadpan delivery. Watch for it. Revel in it. You will get a B, b/c everyone gets a B, & b/c he has better things to do than make you feel good about your brain. Life will go on, & with a bit of humility you'll be the better for his input. He is what your boss will be postgrad<3
Boring to listen to, but his quizzes were easy. The test and essay were more difficult. It sounded like he gives lots of Bs.
He is hard to listen to. But he is very intelligent.
He is a solid choice for mod civ. He's upfront about his expectations. You have to do the reading to do well on the quizzes. His lectures can be boring sometimes, but I thought it was interesting material. His tests have essays, but he gives you the possible prompts beforehand.
Harp gives everyone a B. It doesn't matter if you worked your butt off and did pretty well (or thought you did) you and the person who didn't try will both get a B. His lectures are also long. And I was bored almost to tears in every class.
Harp is great until the second half of the semesters and his lectures get more erratic and confusing. My mistake was not carefully reading the textbook but I had other more important classes. Overall not bad for this class but don't expect to get an A.
His test questions are fair. If you study the lectures and the book you should do fine. The paper isn't graded super strictly, but talk to him about it.
Dr. Harp was a decent professor. Lecture coverage is pretty much irrelevant to exam questions so make sure you read everything there is to know from the textbook. Difficult essay/paper grader. Spent too many hours studying for exams and it still wasn't good enough.
Do your work and you will be fine but the work can be a lot. Take notes while reading for the reading quizzes. Study as you go! Do not leave it for the day before the midterm/final!
Fantastic professor. Very knowledgeable and quite funny in a subtle way. Really wants you to understand the material and brings in lots of perspectives. He is really kind too and very available outside class. He will assign a lot of reading and hw which you definitely have to do. Participation is KEY. Strict paper grader; CHECK GRAMMAR!
Very interesting lectures. Great guy - hope to have more classes with him
Great professor, well organized explanations and doesn't bore you. Makes the people and events in US history fascinating even if thats not your favorite area. Can be particular about things so make sure you know the material well. Make use of the resources he suggests - the textbook website he recomends will save your life on quizzes and exams.
Dr. Harp is an incredibly passionate, knowledgeable, and caring professor. He is more than happy to answer questions and extends a lot of grace to students. However, every class is a long, boring lecture (he would often lecture 10 min past class end time), and I struggled to stay awake. Not engaging. Long, boring textbook readings. Tests not bad.
Harp knows American history. And that is about it. The lectures are boring and long, and often poorly organized. He will find almost a reason to give you a B on your paper, and will ask weird questions. He also just has a very quiet and monotone voice, making falling asleep a guarantee. If you do not mind a dogmatic professor, take him. Or dont.
A lot of people will say that Harp's lectures are boring, and they can be a bit dry, but if you like history you'll like his style and dry humor. Really tough grader, and you aren't graded by very much. Make sure you are ready for the essays on the exams, because the multiple choice usually aren't too bad.
a great and super nice guy. really clearly cares and wants to help students. looks for grammar on papers, so be careful. overall class can be a little bit boring, but you will definitely learn. he challenges perceptions and if you engage with the material, you will really learn a lot
Has an attendance sheet. I liked his lectures and his dry humor. He is very knowledgeable and is a pretty likeable guy. If you like history, you'll like him. If not, you might not. He is a little bit vague when it comes to assignments and you will probably have to talk to him a lot to help out with that stuff.
Kind! Kind lovely man! Everyone loves Dr. Harp!
i liked him a lot but he grades his papers harshly in my opinion. his lectures are really interesting and he's pretty entertaining. exams can be tricky idk make sure you keep up with the reading
