Very helpful at office hours. Very accessible. Tests are not that hard. Pleasant personality.
This course was my absolute favorite to study for! It isn't a blow off class, but her enthusiasm definitely grabs your interest. Super helpful! Call me a nerd, but I was sad when it ended.
Not a very information dense class. Simply go to class and read the book and you are gauranteed an A. ATTEND CLASS BECAUSE SHE HAS NO MERCY ON SKIPPERS!
not lenient at all. no curving. i suggest other professors.
Good teacher. Makes class interesting with lots of jokes. Takes attendance at random. Tests are not too difficult, but only about 30-40 questions, so there is a high point value per question. Very willing to help and review tests with students.
Good teacher that makes some rather bland subjects interesting, Takes attendance so go to class. She makes some tricky test as well including the dreaded text box questions. Lab midterm and finals are huge parts of the grade and if you blow them off, you will regret it especially the Lab Midterm, Most of the lab TAs are good though
I'm kind of obsessed with Ginger. She's so funny in the quirkiest way. Her class definitely isn't easy, but if you actually go to class and pay attention, it's doable. She's also super helpful during office hours. Definitely recommend her.
Test are hard, but the lab can bring your grade up easily.
Dr. Brininstool is a great professor that really explains materials well. Everything about her teaching style is clear cut and to the point. I didnt buy the book and got an A in the class. Powerpoints are the test. 10% participation, 70% of grade were test and she drops lowest test grade, test aprox every 2 weeks, cumulative final for 20% or grade.
Hands down the best professor I've had at LSU thus far. She's a very sweet, down-to-earth lady who cares about her students. The lab was very interesting, although the midterm and final are no joke, and her enthusiasm made the lectures interesting. Her lecture tests are more on the difficult side, so as in any other class, study!
She is a wonderful teacher. Genetics is a hard subject, but she has high standards for her students. I worked hard for the A, and her class requires significant studying, but she is very helpful in office hours. Wonderful personality. Attend class.
I dropped this class towards the very end of the semester, her tests were HARD. She gave tests every 2 weeks like clockwork during recitation. Her lectures were boring & it was a lot of information to retain for each test which was fill in the blank, short answer, tf & multiple choice. I wouldn't really recommend her. Notespowerpt. were on moodle
Dr. Brininstool was one of my favorite professors at LSU. You really must work for a A but it is entirely possible! She is extremely helpful during office hours. If you study the powerpoints you are good to go! Take her if you really want to learn and are willing to put in effort! Honestly, nothing but a great class!
Very geeky but passionate about the material. Comes off as very well-researched and approachable. Would take her again for sure.
Study her notes and study guides. Labs are fun and they count at least 46% of your grade. She loves to help and loves teaching micro. I suggest going to class because participation is at least 9% although she won't give clickers everyday.
A lot of people call her the lesser option for micro. I had to take her because the other teacher's class was full, but I'm glad I took her class. Her tests are tough but they really make you learn the material. She is very passionate about microbiology and makes the lectures really enjoyable. It was a great experience.
For Micro, take Ngyen. Brinstool is a good teacher; however, she makes her tests unnecessarily confusing. I am currently busting my ass to hopefully pull out a B while my friends in Ngyen are doing much better with less effort. Very nice, but incredibly tough (especially because of the +/- scale)
Very difficult class for a basic level microbiology. The tests are tricky and you must go to class because she has in class participation. She doesn't believe in curving tests or giving bonus, so the grade you earn is the grade you get. Her tests are strictly based on the power points so you don't have to get the book.
"Test are tough" is an understatement-they're often word tricky & confusing. Don't expect curves. Do well on tests-If you fail one it will hurt your grade (worth 22.5% each) & participation counts for 10%. She is a good teacher and is really passionate. I wouldn't take her again though because I found it her class was too hard to be a gen ed class
Brininstool's lectures are extremely vague and she goes on long tangents. You can tell she is brilliant, however she does not care if you do well in her class. Her tests are at the testing center and have ridiculous questions intended for you to get wrong. The lab midterm and final is worth 35% of your overall grade and are impossible.
"Tests are tough" is a huge understatement. Be prepared to scrutinize and overanalyze the powerpoint, because they're your only study guide. No need to purchase the book. The tests are very specific and focus on minute details and applications that you probably missed. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN BIO 1/CHEM 1!!!!
Favorite teacher at LSU so far! I have loved her class and would absolutely recommend her to strong students. As everyone else has mentioned her exams are difficult but she is very approachable and helpful during and outside of class. I would advise weak students struggling with GPA to be cautious as I ended up with a B in the class. Lab helps!
Test are tough but fair. Be prepared to study ahead of time and try to take good notes.
Unless you like super specific test questions about a random picture in the powerpoint-don't take her. I knew the information and generally liked the class, but she chooses to make them tricky and highly obscure. I had an 89.55, and she refused to round up and told me I made a "solid B". Didn't make a difference that I never missed a class.
Great teacher, always willing to help. Hard tests tho. She kinda fine low key.
Cool Professor, more than willing to help in her offie hours. And she is easy on the eyes.
Dr. Brininstool made lecture interesting by adding in her own stories and humor. She is clearly passionate about microbiology. Her exams can be tough as the questions on them are really specific to things she said in class or on her power points. She is very approachable and helpful after class and in office hours.
I very much enjoy Dr. Brininstool and her class. I was told not to take her because she's "hard" and do not regret taking her class at all. She is very straightforward when it comes to test material. She is accessible outside of class and very knowledgeable about the material. Beware the lab though-- the midterm and final tough.
She thinks that Microbiology is the only and most important class ever. The exams are hard due to the fact she has questions with multiple answers and if you miss one of those answers or choose one of the wrong ones, the whole question is wrong. Some of the comments she says is very disrespectful towards her students and makes us feel inferior.
Dr. Brininstool is absolutely amazing!! If Micro is your passion, then she's the professor for you. I find that her tests are super straightforward! The only thing bringing my grade down is the lab midterm. The lab final is way better, but not much easier.
She's my favorite professor! I went to office hours at least once a week and she was so nice. Lab killed my grade, and if I tried just a little harder, I would've had an A. It's not an easy class, but I like a challenge and I can actually say I learned something with her. I definitely recommend!
Dr. Brininstool is a cool person in her office hours. Her exams kind of suck due to the fact that there's a lot of multiple response and she's very specific on her exams. She does have an optional final/drops 1 out of the 6 tests. Lab is no joke (harder than the actual class)! Study for the lab midterm and final! It will ruin your grade if not!
The lecture exams are not that hard if you know both the big picture and the details of the information covered in lecture and powerpoints. She was super helpful during office hours, telling me which questions I missed and why. Start studying for the lab midterm as soon as you start, trust me. The lab final was still hard but definitely not as bad.
She worded her tests where even if you knew all of the material you still couldn't get the answers right. She did care about the class and would help during office hours. However, the lab section of the class was horrible. My best advice: if you have an option don't take Brininstool for micro.
Good amount of homework opportunities, not overwhelming though and most of them are very easy. TESTS ARE SO HARD. I study my butt off and still struggled. Her lectures are easy to follow and she keeps your attention. She is an interesting person and it reflects in her lectures, but she expects you to absorb everything for the test.
If you are attending LSU to learn, be inspired, and succeed, then do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from this professor. Her FIVE exams (plus a final) are ridiculously difficult. I studied my butt off all semester, but i was never able to do well on her tests (and I got an A+ in Organic Chemistry so its not because I'm dumb) TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!!
She is extremely nice and she loves her students, but I would not recommend taking her class for micro or genetics. Her tests are ridiculously hard. All the questions on her tests were worded very trickily and we weren't aloud to ask questions during the test so there's that. If you do take her I would recommend getting the textbook!
Professor Brininstool is very passionate about what she does, and that makes her lectures interesting and engaging. However, her exams are extremely difficult. She isn't out to test knowledge, she's out to test critical thinking and often includes incredibly tricky questions. If you want to learn, take her. If you want a GPA saver, avoid her.
I took Dr. Brininstool for 2051 and had to take her again for 2153. Her exams are challenging, no doubt, but if you truly study and understand the material then you should do fine. She is incredibly helpful both in and out of lecture, and tries her hardest to help you understand the concepts. 11/10 did take again.
I very much enjoy Dr. Brininstool! Had her for micro and decided to take her for genetics because I loved her so much. Tests are challenging, but not impossible. I feel like I've learned a lot in both courses. Plus, she's super passionate and extremely helpful during office hours!
She is amazing but not an easy A. You will have to work for your grade but an A is possible. She is passionate about the subject and I loved going to her lectures. Youre graded on 90% 5 tests and 10% homework and the tests are a challenge. If you want to actually learn then take her and go to her office hours. Dont ask for extra points she is fair.
The TAs for this class, Alexander and Stephanie are awful! They aren't willing to help and hard graders. They confuse you and when you answer something wrong they look as if you're dumb. Also, if you don't answer you will sit there until someone answers. Goodluck in this class because they are the only TA for this course.
Very bland lectures. Does not seem interested in own profession. When asked to clarify, will restate exactly the same. Exams on computer. Lots of test questions with purposefully tricky multiple choice (multi-answer, t/f w multiple parts, etc). Despite performing very well in lab, had to retake because grade/understanding from lecture was so poor.
Tests are very difficult and questions are worded really weird many grammar errors which makes it hard to know what the question is asking. The lab midterm/final is very hard.
Dr. Brininstool is awesome. She really cares about her students. Her powerpoint are thorough but using the textbook helps a lot. Her exams do require actually studying and preparation but they are not impossible.
Awesome lecturer. Beware of lab midterm/final, they're made by your TA and worth a lot of your grade. I enjoyed the class and don't regret taking her because I learned a lot, but I wouldn't take her again because the tests were tough even though I knew the material well (I'm going for a high GPA, yo.). The wording is tricky and super specific.
Dr. Brininstool has great, interesting lectures. However, I studied for each of her tests extensively and I do not believe my grade reflected the amount of smart, in depth studying and effort that I put into the class. I believe hard tests are good, but not to the point of not rewarding students that actually put forth the effort.
A very difficult class. The questions are extremely confusing. You can know the materials forward and backward and still get it wrong. She doesn't explain things very well either.
Nice lady but a terrible teacher. Her lectures are very boring and she doesn't seem interested in teaching. She often goes off-topic so we rarely get to the important stuffs. Very unhelpful during office hours. I have to teach myself the materials most of the time. This could have been a much more interesting class if taught by a better teacher.
One of the worst teachers I have ever taken. Exams are ridiculously difficult and she does very little to prepare you for it.
Dr. Brininstool is a great professor. You can tell she really loves microbiology. The lecture exams are difficult but everything is straight from the powerpoints, you just have to really understand the material. The lab is what hurts your grade. I enjoyed labs themselves, but the midterm and final are impossible.
The hardest teacher I have taken in college. Exams are very tricky and incredibly hard (all conceptual). My first "B" in college. Very brilliant lady though.
Ms. Brininstool is extremely smart and because of that, she is very tough and has high expectation. Be prepare to spend a lot of time for this class ad her exams are mostly application based.
This class is very time consuming. Her lectures are long and boring. You have to memorize hundred of slides and be able to apply it to the highest level. She does a very poor job of explaining the materials. Not a good teacher.
Tests don't reflect how well you know the material. (in genetics at least)
So Ive taken Dr. Bring stool for micro biol and currently genetics, this has been the worst mistake I have made so far in college. You can get an A in micro if you try your absolute best and study a lot for the lab mid term and final. However, the exams for Genetics are absolutely ridiculous in difficulty, youll be lucky if you make it with a B
Brininstool's lectures are tedious and have no direction. The exams cover a tremendous amount of materials with a comprehensive final exam. Very unhelpful and sarcastic during office hours.
Took Dr. Brininstool for Micro & Genetics-one of the most passionate biology professors you will ever take. Attending class is a must (& easy points) and exams are challenging but 100% do-able. Tough but fair grader; she is so patient and helpful at office hours.
Dr. Brininstool is a good professor. The problem is that her tests are the hardest, most all over the place tests I've ever seen: matching, drawing, written response, true or false, etc. Test performance doesn't reflect knowledge of the material. 25% of the class dropped; going into the final only 5-10 students of the 90 total had an A- or better
Worst teacher I've taken at LSU so far (Junior currently). If you plan on going to med school or dental school and need good grades, do not take Brininstool for Genetics. She grades very unfairly and the tests are impossible. My friend is in the other section not taught by Brininstool and the class average is a B. My class's average was a D.
Test grades weren't a proper reflection of the material learned in class. Very little multiple choice: matching, short answer, fill in the blank, "choose all that apply" question heavy. If you have 10+ hours a week to study you might do well.
Absolute absurdity! If you can get through this class with a C your probably Dr. Ben Carson. If their are more than three multiple choice problems on a test you basically won the lottery. Just go ahead and study the information front to back, you'll soon find it didn't matter. Whatever you do, stay away from GINGER BRINNINSTOOL!!!!!!!!!!!
She is a sweet lady but she cannot teach. Her lectures focus on basic stuffs but then she tests on the most difficult concepts. On top of that, the questions are worded in the most confusing possible way. If you have a strong background in biology and are willing to dedicate a lot time, you might be able to do well
Brininstool makes the class ridiculously hard and she doesn't teach or explain the materials very well. The average for most exams is in the low 60s. Be prepare to teach yourself the materials.
There is a test every other week that covers a lot of materials so you have to study every day. The tests are very detailed and require a lot of application. You have to be able to connect multiple things and apply it to the highest level within 50 minutes. She is very nitpicky and grades very tough.
She is a genius in biology but she can't explain the materials to the level that the class can understand. Her lectures take forever and the PowerPoint are mostly pictures so you have to spend a significant amount of time to read a very lengthy textbook and decipher the information. She gives study guides but they are very unhelpful.
I think she is an amazing professor, she is very passionate about the subject she is teaching. I have learned a lot in her class. I would take her again anyway. Her test are very very hard and you have to study in advance to do well. Her class is 100% possible if you put in the work. her test are in Himes and are multiple choice, true or false, etc
She seems most interested in making the class as difficult as possible. Exams focus on the most mundane details worded very confusing. Doesn't explain things very well and have unrealistic expectation. 10/10 Will not take again.
Her lectures are pretty boring and her power points are extremely long and lack detail. Her tests cover minute details but are doable if you do her study guides. The lab midterm and final are very hard and take a lot of time studying to pass.
I thought Dr. Brininstool was a fairly good professor. She lectures a mile a minute but her lectures can sometimes be interesting. Make sure you write down everything she says in lecture because she'll say some pretty important details that aren't in the slides. The lab was also fun and interesting.
Ms. Brininstool know her stuffs but is unable to teach it effectively. Her lectures are long, tedious and she tends to waste a lot of time telling random stories that have nothing to do with the course. The exams are very hard, confusingly worded (to the point where you don't know what the question is asking) with a lot of different formats.
She is very rude and unhelpful. The lectures are extremely long and boring. The lab is a pointless and a complete mess. The exams focus on the most unimportant details.
She is incredibly brilliant. Having said that, she doesn't teach well at all. Her lectures are vague and she is very unhelpful you have questions. The tests are very hard to the point of being unreasonable.
I learn next to nothing in this class. There were little to no explanation on the experiments so you never know why were doing it and for each lab, there was always something missing making it difficult to go through the experiments. The exams focus on stuffs that were barely cover in class. Overall, a very poorly constructed lab.
Incredibly difficult class with a horrible teacher. Her powerpoint are extremely vague but the exams are very specific/tricky. Be prepare to spend a lot of time outside of class to study because she doesn't convey the information very well in lectures.
Her questions were ridiculous and sometime didnt make any sense. On top of that, she was very negative and condescending when you came to ask questions during office hours. Move extremely fast during lectures and PowerPoint were mainly pictures with little explanation.
This class was unnecessary time consuming because nothing was explained clearly in lecture and lab. Every questions were very tricky that you have to read it numerous time to know what they were asking. Very unhelpful and tests are much harder than the materials covered in class.
Professor Brininstool possesses a massive knowledge in the subject of microbiology. For that reason, she has very high expectation. At time, it seems like she is teaching this class on a graduate level. She can't explain to the level that the class can understand making it very difficult to learn the materials.
Very challenging with a lot of boring materials. Lectures are unclear and exams are ridiculous with questions that are difficult to understand. Smart lady, just a terrible teacher.
This class was very hard. The questions are very poorly worded and can be interpreted in many different ways. She is incredibly rude and unhelpful when you come to ask questions. The materials are dry and the lectures are boring and we always stay to the very last minutes. The lab is time consuming and pointless.
The lab was a complete nightmare and huge waste of time. The due dates and rubrics constantly change (to the point where you don't know what to follow). When you came to ask questions, she would tell you to read the super confusing rubrics and did not offer any help. The experiments were very rushed and we never understood what was going on.
I have never seen a teacher who is only interested in making the class as difficult as possible instead of actually teaching the materials. Her lectures are vague and difficult to follow. The tests are beyond ridiculous.
She lectures at light speed so it is very difficult to keep up. She expects you to dedicate all your time to the class when in fact you have other classes to focus on. There are a lot of HW, tests are very tough and the materials are confusing.
Worst teacher I have ever taken. Very bland lectures that last forever. Exams are hard and focus on super specific and unimportant details with questions that rarely make sense.
This class is the absolute worst. The lectures are very difficult to understand because she goes very fast and tends to go on random tangents. Exams are very challenging and the lectures don't prepare you much for it.
This class was just not interesting and she doesn't seem to care much. To top it off, the exams are very challenging and require a significant amount of time.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken in college. Her exams were extremely detailed and require you apply multiple concepts simultaneously. The final was ridiculous.
Brininstool is not a bad professor like the other ratings suggest. People just think she is bad because they don't study like they should and end up making horrible grades on the test. Get the textbook, you'll need it. She gives random attendance checks so make sure you're in class. Just study hard and you will make a good grade.
Lectures reflect exam questions but she crammed way too much information into the final to be reasonable. Lectures extremely boring. Occasionally takes attendance
Her test are very specific, so if you miss class make sure to get the notes are you will be out of luck. The majority of the questions on the exams are based on her powerpoints. She is not helpful when you go to her office hours and does not always respond to emails. If you can take it at another school or with another professor DO IT!!!!!!
Great lecturer and knows her stuff as if she sleeps and dreams of bacteria and binary fission. With that said, the tests are extremely difficult. The amount of hours I put into studying for this course was ridiculous. Somehow the ONE thing I didnt memorize would be all over the test. Felt so confident pressing submit only to come out with a 65%
I deff think she takes pride in making the test as difficult as possible with the most complex wording. Like straight up, sits in her office and thinks of how complicated can she word the simplest questions. I get it is part of growing with education but come on, you want people to pass on concepts not an english lesson. Get your thesaurus ready.
This is the hardest and worst class I have taken in the college. She has ridiculous expectation. The amount of time of time I put into studying for this class is greater than all my other classes combined and I still did poorly on the exams.
This is an extremely discouraging class. The lectures are very boring and do not prepare you much for the exams. The exam questions are poorly and confusingly worded in such a way that you can master the materials and still easily get it wrong. Very unhelpful during office hours and doesnt explain things well.
She is not as bad as everyone is making it seem. You have to go to class to get the notes and READ the textbook, I think that's where people go wrong & don't do well on her tests. She gives homework so that helps w/ grades a lot. Takes attendance randomly so go to class. I read the textbook once & then started studying the notes a week before test.
So hard! A significant amount of works from both lecture and lab. You need to have a mastery knowledge of the materials and dedicate a lot of time in order to do well. Her powerpoint are very vague because they are mainly illustration. She seems to focus on making the exams super challenging.
She is very tough. Exams are composed of super hard concept questions in the most confusing and tricky wording. If you want a challenge, she is the person to take.
That class is very hard, confusing and very time consuming, She has unreasonable expectations, doesn't explain things well and is very unhelpful (and at time very rude). The lab is equally as confusing and I never understood anything because the experiments were extremely rushed. I like biology but this class was horrible.
You have to read her questions like five times to understand it. Get ready to over interpret everything because she picks the most random details to ask about with very confusing and tricky wording. She doesnt explain things well at all and seems very focus on making the class as difficult as possible.
Attendance is optional, but go to class to get the notes. Plus, she is funny. Her lectures are not bad. You can also get participation points. Use your textbook. It helps. There is not a lot of mastering homework, so make sure you do it. Do not forget about packback either. There are a lot of opportunities for points, and she is willing to help.
This is by far the most pointless, time consuming and tedious lab. The amount of writing that you have to do is ridiculous. It like she wants you to rewrite the entire lab manual. Points were taken off very randomly and you never know why you got a particular grade on the reports.
Took this course over Summer 2020 and never had any issues. She worked very hard to make this normally-in-lab class fun and easy. This online course was a trial run for her, but she did great! Don't be afraid to take a micro lab online with her. Exams are a little difficult, but if you pay attention "in class" and keep notes you will be good to go!
Had her for the lab part of the class. She is extremely smart and explains things very well. Very tough exams but she is a great teacher.
Honestly, I hate this class. Microbiology wasn't too hard, but her tests were very specific, so you had to know the material and understand the material. Sure, she is passionate and she loves the topic, but her lectures were boring and she rambles on and on. I struggled to pay attention, and it didn't help that she was also disorganized.
Extremely difficult class. Her lectures are long, boring and vague so it's hard to know what you need to study. The exam wordings are super confusing and half of the questions don't even make sense. Very unhelpful and doesn't explain things if you have questions.
Her exams are very hard for no reason. The exam questions are difficult to follow and understand. The level of details that you have to know is ridiculous. She isnt great at teaching or explaining the materials. The lab takes up an immense amount of time with little to no explanation. The worst professor I've ever had.
Super specific exams designed to be tricky at every possible level. Lectures are very long and unclear. The lab is a mess and takes up a huge amount of time. The directions for the lab assignments are vague and confusing and it took forever for grades to be posted. A very hard class.
Personally, she is such a sweet lady but the lectures are not helpful and her "quizzes" are test. Be sure to read the textbook and take notes because almost all of the test questions were from the book. She is super unorganized and lectures are not helpful. She also likes to use several different platforms to submit work/participation.
I just dont think she values our time. Shes late to class, her powerpoints are only pictures and she forgets to upload them on time. Tests are designed so we can only see one q at a time, and q is locked after we answer. It makes managing time on tests really stressful on top of an already disorganized class.
Terrible. The amount of reading you have to do is ridiculous, and yes, you HAVE to read because she does not teach. I don't mean this in the cute-sy way. This. Woman. Does. Not. Teach. Her lectures are useless and a waste of time. Her exams are set up to where you cannot go back to questions. I love micro, but Ginger has made me hate this class.
To start, the exams are called quizzes, but don't let down your guard. She requires you to take a 35 multiple choice quiz in 40 minutes where you cannot go back to previous questions. The quizzes covers too much information. She scoffs at student feedback. Reading and taking notes from the textbook is most effective because her lectures suck.
The lectures are composed of her going off on a tangent so they are pointless for the most part. The textbook is your main source of studying, but it is extremely lengthy and not easy to read. The tests are very difficult and have the most ridiculous format where you cannot go back to the previous question once you have answered that question.
The tests in this class are ridiculously hard. You can only move forwards, so if you do not know a question you have to skip it or guess so that you can move on. The time limit is also about 60-90 seconds per question. Her lectures do not help when it comes to studying or understanding because she jumps all over the place.
Arguably the worst professor I have had at LSU. Her lectures and ppts as nothing more than supplemental material, students are expected to memorize 70 sections worth of the textbook in the 2 weeks between quizzes. She will not use the word exam for the 46 minute, 33 questioned, you cant go back quizzes. Unorganized. VERY unclear.
Worst professor of my life and probably the worst professor at LSU. Super disorganized, lectures are useless, exams are stupidly specific. This professor has made me forever despise microbiology. Honestly wish that she could be fired for her lack of people skills and lack of ability to teach.
Personally, I have never so little respect for a professor until this class. She is very disorganized and reading the textbook barely helps on the "quiz's". I love microbiology but this class was more difficult than it should have been. Just do not take her for this class. I am honestly so disappointed because I was so excited for this course.
She tries her best to make the class as difficult and time consuming as possible instead of actually teaching the materials. The lectures are unhelpful so you are left reading a super lengthy and complex textbook. The quizzes are poorly structured in that you cannot go back to the previous question and they are confusingly worded.
Worst professor ever. Doesnt care about her students. Makes everything harder. Makes you buy 3 separate materials that all have different homework and due dates. Laughs unnecessarily too much on zoom. Disappointing teacher for a great class. Only gave her a one cuz I couldnt give her a zero
By far the hardest class I have taken. Her lectures are very tedious and help very little with preparation for the exams. There are tons of HW/assignments on multiple different platforms making it difficult to keep up with the materials. Quizzes cover a lot of difficult information and you cannot go back to double check your answer after answering.
this professor had the AUDACITY to call a 70 section assessment (236 pages of textbook material) a quiz after only having 2 weeks to learn the material. You also cant go back after u answer a question on the quiz. In order 2 get a good grade have 2 at least spend 30+ hrs studying. Dont go to lecture just read the textbook if u want an a.
The way to succeed in college is to find the best professor for each class. Best professor a professor who cares about students learning the material and not making the material insanely difficult. She is not that professor. If your only option is to take her then wait a semester and take it with anyone else.
Microbiology is already a hard class and Brininstool does not make it any better! Took this class during COVID and we had to buy 3 different things for this course $$! The "quizzes" are each about 30-70 sections of the chapter. The lab midterm and final are both short answer, you can't go back and see your answers and you only get 1 hour. TERRIBLE!
If you have to take it: download textbook and save each chapter you will have to use for the exam, download all of her ppts and make a master ppt, ctrl f. I stopped going to this class when she spent 40 minutes taking about potato beetles or something when we had a test. I've taken and failed Donze's 2051 b/c of health reasons, take Donze.
Brininstool is not necessarily a bad teacher, and she is very passionate about what she teaches, but she does not care at all about how her student perform. It almost seems as if she enjoys watching us squirm and then gets cocky when we are confused/asked for help. It is obvious that she is here to get through the material, not to help us succeed.
She made micro the worst bio class i've ever taken. She requires us to buy 3 different subscriptions for homework which is excessive and expensive. Exams are set up to where you can't go back to check work or skip around on questions. This Prof made everything more difficult to students during a pandemic. Avoid
I have her for the lab portion. Gives terrible feedback for exams and is so unhelpful. Its like she wants students to fail and doesnt respect students WANTING to learn/better their knowledge- so ridiculous. Putting her in the burn book. If I could rate her a zero I would.
She is just awful... cannot teach plus doesnt want to listen to her student. This is the first time I have ever cursed at anyone. She didnt even care that we are going through different things this period..
Because the lab is apart of the lecture she makes the lab mid-term impossible. The class average was a 22% with no curve because she does not have to reach the "C" mark. This is due to the lab being apart of the lecture. She just lowers your whole grade and does not care one bit. If you can't get 100s on your lecture tests to boost your grade GL!
Disrespectful towards her students.
I have never had such a dislike for a person in general as I do for this woman. She DOES NOT care about her students what so ever. The absolute worst professor and person on the LSU campus. Her exams are impassable, and the average is an F. She blames the students for the horrible grades. No drops, curves, bumps, etc. nothing. Good luck.
Wanna know how bad this teacher is? (no, not a professor.) I didn't even take her for the lecture portion, but from the lab alone I feel so sorry for those who took her for lecture. Rude and condescending to students, and impossible tests. I understand the hateful reviews finally. Don't take her, she does not care about the students at all.
Having BIOL2051 lab under Brininstool was easily the most challenging thing I've had to do at LSU so far (I just finished up Organic Chemistry). Way harder than it should be simply because of how tests are designed/graded. Spent 2+ weeks studying intensively for the lab midterm & final & it wasn't enough. Impossible.
Horrible.
The absolute worst lab class I have ever taken. If you can't do extremely well in the lecture half of this class, you are SCREWED. You need to know every inch of the lab manual to do well on the lab midterm and final. Super rude and basically loves to see her students fail.
This is the worst lab you can ever take. You are note given notes. The midterm and final lab exam are absolutely impossible because you don't know most of the material on it. The "study guide" gives you no help. She does not care about you as a student or about your grade. The TA will get mad because you didn't do well and blame it on you.
Down bad
lectures don't help. lab makes no sense. don't take this professor.
WOW. By far the WORST teacher I have ever seen. The lecture professor (luzan) didn't know how to use Moodle, never even knew the passwords to her own tests. Tests also had NUMEROUS mistakes that she didn't even know about, not to mention she gave us a "study guide" written by a 2 year old. And the lab final.... well. "read the manual"... yeh.
She doesn't teach. All she does in lectures is goes off on random tangents and then expect you to magically know hundred of pages from the textbook. The average for the exams are in the "D" and "F" range and she doesn't care at all. The lab is extremely hard, a huge waste of time and doesn't teach anything useful.
This woman is god awful. How she is a professor blows my mind. She talks randomly in lecture about stuff that doesnt even pertain to the class. Exams are information she never covers, even in homework she assigns. Doesnt give credit where is should be due for a lot of assignments. Ignores emails to top it all off. Stay away for her class.
You have to read, learn and teach yourself the textbook. Most of the lectures are composed of her telling irrelevant stories that have nothing to do with the course materials. The exams contain very hard questions that are confusingly worded and they ask about the most random details. She is also very unhelpful and rude if you have questions.
Worst professor Ive had at LSU Tests are based off textbook which you are expected to memorized 72 textbook sections for and questions are on the most random material from the book. Lectures are useless. Lab isnt as hard as others are saying. Read the manual, take notes during lab class, and study for the the midterm and final and it will be fine
Dawg, if a 0 was possible, she would have it. This lab is so hard for absolutely no reason. Even the lecture prof tried to get her to chill. You only have a final and a midterm and you are expected to know THE TINIEST DETAILS FROM THE EXTREMELY LONG LAB TEXTBOOK. If the average is failing across every section, clearly students are not the problem!!
Ran the micro lab my semester and not too bad at all. If you email her she will always reopen the quiz within two weeks it closed but a day after that and you are not getting a response. Some of her questions on her quizzes are wrong when theyre literally straight out of the book is my only real complaint
Very difficult class. You have to know everything to the greatest details. The exam questions are ridiculously tricky and confusing. She spent most of the lectures talking about random things that do not pertain to the materials so you have to learn everything through reading the textbook. '
Worst professor at LSU. Forced Dr. Nguyen (an absolute jem of a prof by the way) to make the lab worth 30% of our grade, and only made it to where the midterm and final - in which she made you memorize the whole 100 page lab manual - were the only components of your grade. I should have an A in this class but her meddling is making me barley pass.
Professor Brininstool was a very interesting professor, the lab portion up until the lab final was pretty okay actually, but that lab final was terrible, and everyone knows it. I am literally 5 one hundredths away from a b- and I don't think she is going to help me out. At the end of the semester she didn't answer any questions about grades.
Run by a TA but is still not run well. The lab tests were ridiculous and the study guides she posts arent even worth completing since half the time they don't help. Expects us to know the textbook word for word.
Brininstol seems to be a nice person. However, for lab theres only a midterm and final along with hws. The two exams are written answers no multiple choice and many of the questions are on tiny details that you will not be aware that you need to know.
The lecture portion of the class was not terrible. I was on the verge of an A the entire semester until the lab midterm and final. The lab grade will make or break you in the end. Study the lab notebook front to back and you might be okay. Lab exams are short answers only but all lecture exams are multiple-choice. Be ready for lots of homework tho.
She tends to go off on random tangents during lectures and then expects you to know the most difficult topics that she never taught in class. Very unhelpful if you have questions. Get ready to read the textbook a lot and memorize/understand everything in great details.
Brininstool is obviously very smart but doesn't teach the materials well at all. She has very high and unrealistic expectation. Spends way too much trying to the make the course super difficult and confusing and not enough time actually teaching the class. I had A in all my other courses except this one.
She presides over the micro labs. I spoke to her about a valid issue happening in the lab and she did not care at all. She would not change her ways if her life depended on it, even if the whole class is against her. She is passive aggressive and makes you feel small. Impossible lab exams, as in MANY F's. I had a 4.0 up until this point. Good luck.
no, just no. never.
Brininstool is a nice person but structures the class in a way that makes it extremely difficult. She doesn't give study guides or practice tests. Her tests are on moodle, but she makes them extremely hard in case people might cheat, and she collects attendance during only 8 classes throughout the year and you don't know which ones they are.
This class is not structured well IMO. You have so many things to keep track of during the week (Packback, Mastering, Connect, etc.) so organization is the key to success. Topic quizzes are hard af and even if I studied for them it didn't help. Micro is a hard class in general but this class is not structured for student success. Take Luzan instead
Class is not structured well. Don't bother asking for help. She does not care.
If I could make one teacher leave LSU it would be this one. She is awful. I learned absolutely nothing. Her tests were online and at home and they were still ridiculously hard at times. I was a straight A student until I met this woman. A lot depends on your lab TA so if you get unlucky with that you are absolutely screwed. Take Luzan she curves!!
This lab is the reason I didn't get an A+ in micro. Allison was the absolute worst TA. Made the final and midterm SO much harder than the other sections then bragged about having a 59% average (which was apparently better than the rest of the sections? You shouldn't be proud of that). Horribly managed, horribly executed. Just gotta suffer through.
Very tough and almost impossible handling of Micro class. It will depend on your TA and though my TA was kind, the class itself was a mess and not competent at teaching for the lab midterm and final. Avoid at all costs if you dont want to cry every day out of frustration.
This is a very poorly managed lab. All the experiments are super rushed where you don't have time to do or learn anything. The TA does not explain anything. There is little guidance on how to study for the lab exams besides memorize the entire lab manual. The averages for the exams are in the low 50 range.
The amount of stuffs that you have to buy for this class is ridiculous. In addition to the expensive textbook, you have to buy the lab manual, lab supplies, subscriptions to TopHat/Packback/Mastering/Connect. Exams are very hard because she asks about the tiniest and most random details in the most confusing way.
I still have nightmares about this class. The only reason I got a good grade is because Luzan gave us a lot of bonus because she felt so bad for us in Brininstool's lab. For real grade reference, the average on the lab final in my section was a 48%. If you do not do well on the lecture exams, your micro grade is toast, I am just being honest.
Very challenging and time-consuming class. Her exam questions are extremely tricky and can interpreted multiple ways. She does not prepare you for the exams and is very unhelpful/rude if you have questions. She often goes on a tangent about random things in lectures. I study so much for the class and still could not do well.
Brininstool is a very nice lady who loves microbiology. However, the setup of this class is not very good. Firstly, she takes attendance randomly for a grade so you cannot miss it. The lab midterm and final are extremely difficult- all written response with very confusing questions. The exams are on Moodle but also super confusing and hard to pass.
Incredibly difficult exams. You are expected to know everything at the mastery level but she doesn't prepare you for the exams. Get ready to spend a lot of time studying for this class and reading the textbook and lab manual.
Dr. Brininstool is not a good teacher. She acts like everyone already has a colorful background and micro and therefore we should just get it. She has a habit of making you feel stupid. The lab final will make or break your grade, you literally need to know the manual from cover to cover to even pass the final. Good luck
She spends most of the lectures telling irrelevant stories, laughing at her own jokes and then testing you on the hardest topics that she barely covers in class. The exam questions are so confusingly worded and tricky that you don't even know what she is asking most of the time. You need to have very strong background in biology for this class.
This class sucks. I spent nearly $200 on books and access codes for this class alone. Be ready to memorize all of the incredibly small print on the lecture slides and in the lab manual. The concepts you learn in class will be helpful for about 5% of the exams. I've lasted 5 semesters with above a 4.0 and know that this class is going to tank it.
Very long, tedious and boring lectures that help very little with the exams. She tries to do everything to make the class as challenging as possible. I study so much so much but could barely pass her exams. If possible, take Luzan. My friend is doing much better in that class despite putting in a lot less effort.
You can know the materials forward and backward and still easily get the questions wrong on her exams because of how the questions are worded. I only go to the lectures because she does random participation points; otherwise, the lectures are useless because she just goes off on a random tangent most of the time.
I studied that lab manual front and back and still failed the midterm. She makes the questions tricky for no reason. Even if you know the material well it's no point. She'll have you second-guessing everything on the exams.
Very difficult class. Despite studying two weeks for the lab exam and memorizing the lab manual, I still could not do well. The questions are ridiculously tricky and do not make any sense most of time.
The hardest class I have ever taken. She designs every questions so that you have the highest chance of getting it wrong and there is no guide on how you are supposed to study.
She is just horrible. Her topic quizzes (really exams and 4 of them) are hard and not at all about what she discussed in class. Everyone normally said that lecture carries the lab part of the class but it is really the other way around. she just doesnt transfer the stuff in class to the quizzes and yours grade will suffer
I WISH I had listened. It IS that bad, don't sacrifice your GPA. She formulates each exam with the intent of tricking you, they are impossible. Halfway through the course the class average was a 70 and she was "very happy with this bc we have to put in more work". The lab was doable, it's her half of the course grade that is not. DON'T DO IT!!!!
Everyone told me not to take Professor Brininstool, but I thought "how bad can it really be?" Her lectures are so hard to listen to, she goes off on tangents that are not relevant to the tests. She also said all information on exams can be found in lecture notes... definitely not the case. Tests were very hard and lectures are hard to follow.
Where to start? Get ready to spend money for this class: Mastering, packback, lab requirements. Randomly does attendance so class is mandatory. Lecture is very boring. Micro is already a hard course, and she tests on the most minute details so be ready to know micro inside and out. Exams are in Himes now. Wouldn't even recommend to my worst enemy.
I thought how hard could this class be. Her rate my professor was horrible but I was use to teaching myself things but I wish I would have listened to the reviews. Unless you're ready to study nothing but microbiology please take any other professor but her. She just makes the classes harder than it needs to be for no reason.
Take someone else. She gives no extra credit even when 75% of class has averages below C. Emailed her and received a stuck up, snarky response. Complete B. Lab exams are completely unfair containing 40+ questions that are short answer/written. No multiple choice.
You study a lot of material that can get very specific but presented on the test, it is very general bc you have to understand the full concept. The lab midterm/final is difficult bc you should know the organisms, media type, and specific procedures that go along with every experiment (15 labs). It is possible to pass but u have to put in the work
No extra credit, basically graded by three exams which are borderline impossible to study for because the "chapters/lessons?" are so vague and out of order. exams are all written no mc and graded very harsh. would definitely avoid if possible but if you get 100s on all the connects and quizzes you will pass. have to keep up with connect on your own
Very unorganized, got off topic a lot during lecture, Very difficult tests, you have to study several hours a week to get even a C on tests. One of the few good things was that she gave office hours to review tests and ask questions and that helped a lot. Not terrible but definitely not the best
She would put so much emphasis on certain material during lectures that would not appear on tests. Probably the most in-depth test I've ever taken. During office hours she stated multiple answer choices were correct but one was "more correct" and overall prides herself in making hard tests. Her lectures rambled off-topic and weren't engaging.
Take someone else, for the love of god take someone else.
Most in depth tests I have ever seen. The lab is alright if you have the TA and not the professor, but anything that is considered an exam will be extremely difficult and in-depth. I would say take someone else, but there is no one else currently.
DO NOT TAKE DR. BRININSTOOL. I've never felt passionate enough about a professor to leave a rating here, but Dr. Brininstool is the worst professor I've ever had. She brags about her low test averages and spends valuable class time going on rants about her kids, pets, etc. She teases her students and becomes happy when we fail.
Do not take this professor. She knows what she is talking about, but does a horrible job at teaching the subject. Other classes have a much better time with microbiology because of the professor. However, Dr. Brininstool lacks any empathy or reason for anyone. If you have a busy schedule, do NOT take her. Your semester will be so much harder.
Other peoples reviews all say the same things and its all true. Class is interesting sometimes, but usually spent learning concepts that arent super hard; then on exams she asks questions that wont make any sense. She constantly complains and makes every day a nightmare. She's told the class many times that she wont change anything about the class
I have never had a professor that I ever hated before but this lady is just so special. NO extra credit, her lectures are pointless because she just runs her mouth about things that do not matter (only went for participation), she looks at how long you take to do her mastering biology homework and if it is not to her liking she will not help you.
Exams cover EVERYTHING, so you need to study every slide and article bc she WILL ask a question abt it. Her lectures really weren't that bad, she gives a lot of info so you need to pay attention, but she does record and post them. She'll do a question for attendance most classes and it can help slightly pad your grade.
IM C C CALLIN IT QUITS RIGHT NOW THIS TIIIME WERE PLAYING GAMES AND ALL WE DO IS FIIIGHT ITS GETTING LAME SO OLLY OLLY OLLY OXEN FREE ALL THE BAD GIRLS COME CHILL WITH ME YOUR LOVES A DRUG YOU GOT ME ON THE RUN IM JUST ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE BAD GIRLS CLUB HEY
This is honestly one of if not the hardest lab I have taken due to the professor and structure. I had a TA who would never answer questions and the exams were killer.
As a person, she is okay. Did not like her as a professor. I studied harder for this class than any other (I'm currently in OChem 2, spanish, and a marketing class and am passing all of them) and no method of studying I used worked. Exams ask very specific questions which isn't helpful in a class with so much material to cover. NO EXTRA CREDIT
If you want to save your GPA and your mental well-being please do not take this class. You can study all you want, nothing you do will prepare you for her exams. In addition, the lab is unnecessarily hard. The exams and quizzes for the lab are all short answer. She will never give extra credit or curve any exams.
Absolutely terrible professor. Lectures were pointless. Questions on exam are detailed but imo irrelevant to testing your knowledge on key concepts in microbio. Currently majoring in Engineering, so I've had my fair share of awful professors. In those cases, I've always been able to flip through the textbook myself to get by. Not with this course.
Words cannot describe the distaste I had for Micro and she added to my pain. This is a class where every point counts to save your grade. The lab is manageable but her as a professor is impossible and followed with nothing but stress and tears. Be warned. Exams are challenging to study for and my grades were nothing but D's as an A level student.
Lord help anybody who takes Brininstool. I have never failed a class so bad and I have done everything in my power to at least get a 60 on an exam. I full believe the micro department is set up to make you fail. Majority of my lab has to retake this class. I even emailed the dean about this god awful class its that bad. Do yourself a favor and dont
She is the most heartless professor I have ever taken in my life. I am a straight A student who is horribly struggling. She is unapproachable and very rude to you when you try to ask for help or explanations. Save yourself and take this class not at LSU. The microbiology department is HORRIBLE and their goal in life is to make you fail. RUN!!!!!!
Brininstool is not a nice lady or teacher. I only had her for lab and her midterm and final are horrendous. The tests are extremely specific and the only advice you receive to study and do well is "memorize the lab manual", which is impossible to do. This lab is super unorganized and difficult. Do NOT take her for lecture or you will fail.
Brininstool's class is a challenge, but using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook can help. Lectures are dense, but attendance is mandatory. Exams cover a lot of specific details, so thorough studying is key. Overall, a tough but manageable class with the right prep.
During the lab midterm, my microscope did not work as it hasn't all semester. I wasted 15 minutes trying to view my stain until my TA finally let me use another one where I was able to view it immediately. I emailed Brinninstool, because this wasted my time and I could not finish the written portion and she said I should have managed time better.
Top 3 worst teachers OAT. It's almost like she expects us to know how her static powerpoint slides play out in real time upon first view. Its impossible to take notes in real time because she is so unorthodox your notes will look like chicken sctratch. She only makes attendance mandatory since most people will learn more watching recordings at home
Dr. Brininstool has a lot of negative ratings. I think because of her difficult tests. However, she is a super sweet lady and does care about you when you put in the effort. Every time I have met with her, she has put in a lot of effort to make sure I get what I am struggling with. She is always up to meeting.
She is very nice as a person and can point out inadequacies in the content you learned for the exam. But her exams are quite tough so her slides require EXTREMELY thorough reading. Attendance gives credit. Cumulative final is optional and replaces lowest grade. 4 topic exams. Her exams are the dealbreaker honestly but I like her lectures.
If you want a reason to drop out, take this class.
If there is one class as a bio major that I would never want to take again it would be this class. It isn't even the class really, it is the lab! I did not like my TA and he was a really hard grader, so I am biased on my opinion. I know a couple of my friends had really good TAs, but that is something you can not choose.
Ginger made me switch majors. This was the worst class I've ever taken (straight-A student). Only thing stopping me from dropping class was textbooks costing over $300 in total for this class-between lab and lecture. DO NOT TAKE HER. She pulls things out of thin-air for her tests and does not offer extra credit. This is as hard as biology can get.
I loved this lab! There are weekly moodle quizzes but they're easy as long as you have the lab manual. There are virtual simulations which you'll get 100% as long as you do them. The Exams are alright, just study and memorize the information on the practice sheets (especially for exam 2). There is bonus offered after each exam.
She is not a terrible person but her ability to keep people invested in the classroom is not good. For an hour and a half class she does not talk about relevant information for about half of it. She is knowledgeable but it takes a lot of extra time to study and remember information. There is stuff from the textbook and the lab exams SUCK!
I took lab under Brininstool, lecture with Luzan this is for lab. I had a great TA so lab itself was fun, but, the final and midterm were not. When they say memorize the lab manual they are not lying! I did well on both the midterm and final because I memorized all the information in the lab manual (insane ik). Write out exams, not multiple choice!
Rude. Insanely rude. I had Luzan for lecture and her for lab. Lab midterm and final are written by TA and range from being exact questions on Moodle to complete and utterly impossible questions. Hope you get lucky w an easy one. It's not like you have an option to take her if you have to take micro. Just don't take this girl for lecture. In awe.
lab sucks, manual is disorganized. i used it to start my christmas party bonfire. find a therapist before taking this class or say a prayer. it's like a situationship: unclear about what it wants, teaches u lessons u don't want to learn, wastes ur time, leads u on, making u believe you'll get an A but u don't, makes u cry. the list goes on.
I had Luzan for lecture, so the A- would be lower just for lab. This was one of the most unorganized, intense lab I have ever taken. The manual was AWFUL and required you to flip between multiple chapters per lab. GOOD RIDDANCE.
I had Luzan for lecture and Brininstool for lab. It was like a two-headed monster. On one end, the lecture was chaotic and disorganized, and on the other, the lab was extremely rigid and unforgiving. The lab exams required you to not just memorize but understand the entirety of the lab manual content. Take this class in the summer if possible.
DO NOT ignore the other ratings this class is farcical. As a bio major, I love the material. But this was the hardest class I have taken. Passing requires KNOWING the ppts, lab manual, & chapter reads word. for. word. Exam questions are worded weirdly & ask about the smallest details. The lab... no words. The lab TA Ms. Aheli was my saving grace.
Have only had her for the lab and it has still managed to be a horrible experience. If you are not a BIO major but still need to take this class, take it over the summer or at another school if possible. Brininstool makes the lab unnecessarily complicated and makes you take lab quizzes each week. Wish she would retire.
Brininstool is a terrible professor; strongly advise against taking her if you have a tough schedule. If unavoidable, review her disorganized, lecture-heavy notes every other day to understand the material clearly. Be aware that lecture exams have no curve, even with low class averages. And her lab exams are entirely short answer. Good luck.
Take Luzan. The only way to study for her exams are to watch them and they are so disorganized. There are so many different types of assignments it's hard to keep up with and she is not lenient on anything. The tests questions come from her head, are detail orientated and tricky. She's really smart just a bad teacher.
not a bad class, but it depends on TA you're taught by. mine wasnt bad. exams are hard and are all fill in the blank, must study! pretty useless bc the lab doesnt really help w exams. Grade is based on 3 exams, virtual labs (easy) and a lab technique grade. failed 2/3 exams and still ended w a B-. offers test corrections for extra points on exams.
All of her PowerPoints were just pictures, very little words were on them. That made them completely useless to study when it came time for the exam. Her exams are the worst. They are split into sections with 10-14 questions per section, and once you submit one section, you cannot go back and change anything. Heed my warning and do not take her.
The most miserable human being who wants to take out her misery on her students. It is almost like she set the class up for people to fail. My TA told me she was forced to grade hard/make our grades lower because Brininstool "didn't want a super high average". That should speak enough about her character.
Very very rude. She be talking to you mad crazy as if we not the ones contributing to her salary. LSU should fire her and hire a professor that actually has a passion for teaching and isn't a raging b-word.
Didn't interact with her too much, as she oversaw the lab that was led by TAs. However, her midterm and finals were some of the hardest exams I've ever taken. I would definitely suggest taking this class over the summer because she oversees all of the labs in the Fall and Spring.
Had Luzan for lecture and they fired her instead of brininstool. Might as well fire both. Lab final exam was structured horribly and made no sense. Just use pictures instead of walking around in circles like idiots. 2 mins each section and you can't go back and why go back a regrade peoples exams to be lower. Just take microbio over the summer.
You will fail every exam no matter how hard you study. I went to office hours to see what I was doing wrong and when I took her advice, I got the lowest score I'd ever gotten on an exam. She says exams are lecture based but lectures include getting off topic for 30+ minutes. The lab exams have no word bank so learn how to spell Escherichia coli.
Never had a professor that was truly a horrible teacher. Her tests are NOTHING like her lectures. She never gives instructions and grades harsh. Lab is unorganized and the exams are extremely hard. She does not round or curve grades. Get your PhD in microbiology before attempting. Truly don't have a good thing to say about her class.
Ridiculous
I only took her for lab, but this is the worst experience I've had with a course. Theyre not lying when they say you need to memorize the manual - a manual filled with useless background information and no organization. You do multiple experiments at once and have to flip through the entire thing. I don't care about my grade, Im just happy Im done.
the lecture exams are nearly impossible and no matter how much you study you will fail. but honestly the lab wasn't too bad just unorganized and the fact that the lab midterm and final are fill in the blank/written is ridiculous
You know that scene in Mean Girls where Regina walks into her room crashing out? Yeah...
you can tell Dr Brininstool is really passionate about what she does and I think that really carries the class. That being said, I have never worked so hard for so long for 4 credits in my life. You need to study every day if you want to do well in this class. this has been my hardest class without a doubt and good luck to whoever takes it next
I had Luzan for lecture and Brininstool for lab. I had the best TA and UTA which really made the difference. Moodle quizzes, midterm exam, and final exam (plus safe points and technique care but these are EASY points). Moodle quizzes are very simple imp and you will do fine on the midterm/final if you just put in the work and study the lab manual!!
The exams are as bad as everyone says. Be prepared to memorize the entire lab manual. My TA (Wendy) was passive aggressive asf anytime I asked her a question. Gingers have no souls.
I have never encountered a professor who wants their students to fail as much as Dr. Brininstool. I'm thankful I had Luzan for lecture because I could not deal with Brininstool for 2 courses. Midterm/final are made by your TA and incredibly difficult. I had Saiful as my TA and he regularly had outbursts at students. Memorize the entire lab manual.
I spent over $400 on the REQUIRED materials for this class that should tell you enough. On top of that every assignment is due at different time of the week which made it super hard to keep track. I had Brininstool for lecture and the exams are ridiculous hard and you have to memorize every lecture slide to do good and there's no curve.
She's a good person, but she cannot teach for her life; her lectures are just her talking and her slides are simply images without any theory
Just drop the course if you have her
Cannot teach for her life just talks throughout every lecture
Don't ignore the reviews. She is not a good teacher. She tests on the smallest details. She will LAUGH in your face and is happy when her class fails. Don't even get me started on the lab...
The words biology teacher i have ever had in my life. Got a 95 in bio 1201 and 1202 and halfway through the semester there's no hope for me. She is the worst teacher ever. Talks through her lectures the whole time, doesn't curve, doesn't remotely talk about anything on the test, and makes test purposely brutal!!! Don't take for your own sanity.
makes me feel stupid. the lab is awful. had to fight for my life for this class. im writing this review instead of studying because its hopeless. take the other professor offered for lecture. makes it impossible. lab depends on TA. my TA pulls questions from they're butt and the entire class failed. F THIS CLASS
Dr. Brininstool is knowledgeable in microbiology and is outgoing. However, she is terrible at relaying her knowledge and is rude to her students when they ask for clarification in lecture. Lectures are unorganized, she goes off topic frequently & goes through powerpoints that have little to no words on them, she purposely makes her exams difficult.
Quite literally the worst person to teach this class. Currently arguing with her about this stupid project THAT SHE GAVE NO DIRECTION ON.
had dr. brininstool for the lab portion of BIOL2051. she is a nice person, but asks her TAs to be harsh on purpose. the lab pretty much depends on how your TA is, but it's definitely not an easy A.
I personally really enjoyed the material but Ginger Brininstool is an unbelievably difficult grader compared to other micro professors. I know people in the exact same micro class, just with a different professor, who get, on average, a B or A on every exam because the material they're taught is more surface level, AS IT SHOULD BE FOR 2051.
If you have to take BIOL 2051, take it with Bhattacharyya. My friend had Bhattacharyya and their exams are almost identical to the practice online quizzes that she released before the exams. On the other hand, Brininstool makes the exams extremely difficult and does not prepare you for them at all. I study for weeks and still can not do well.
FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS REVIEW! This review is for the lab portion of micro because I was blessed enough to have Dr. Nita. You are STUCK with Brininstool for the lab part, it is TA based but she is the overseer. She actually came into our lecture and BRAGGED that the final would be the hardest test we take at LSU with a villainous grin on her face
Actually more to say cause she made this semester feel like I was in the upside down, except I would rather face VECNA than take this class again. Im not gonna tell u to avoid her cause u cant for the lab, but I will recommend to start studying for the midterm the second u start the class cause her advice is to "know the entire manual"
Sadly what I actually want to say about this women will get taken down. She flipping sucks and gets off on students failing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This woman is genuinely the worst professor at LSU. She quite literally brags about making the exams hard and i swear gets OFF on failing students. I worked my ass off in this class and just BARELY made a C+. Take literally anyone else.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take this professor. Tests are extremely difficult and do NOT focus on the main ideas of the lectures. Save your time, money, and GPA. Class averages were in the 60s and she did NOT curve whatsoever. Also, textbooks were insanely expensive. This is by far the class i've studied the most for, and still got a C.
I only had her for the lab part of this class, but MY GOD do I have so many problems. First of all, the average midterm and final grades should NOT be in the 50%. That is not something to be proud of and yet she refuses to change anything. She is so unorganized with unclear grading criteria, and without Dr. Nita, I would have made a worse grade.
The lab itself is super fun and easy. However, the midterm and final are both challenging. Read the lab manual over and over again and take notes and you should be okay. No interaction with Dr. Brininstool herself, the entire class is TA based. Study hard and early for the midterm/final and an A is possible. (Only took her for lab)
Her lecture slides are just pictures for the textbook with no explanation. She spent most of lectures going off topic. The exams are very tough with mostly application questions that you have to learn by yourself. If you ask her a question, she will respond in a very condescending way. Worst teacher I have ever taken at LSU.
I enjoyed the lecture and labs part of this class, but you must attend class and take notes. Her slideshows are mainly pictures that she talks about. The lab exams are EXTREMELY difficult. I studied very hard and did not do good on the lab exams. Dr. Brinintstool's exams in general are just difficult, but you need to study very hard.
