Doesn't require book for class, requires weekly journals from the WSJ

Not the easiest professor, but taught you the most relevant things needed in the finance world, and taught them well.

Prof Bales is the best finance professor, BY FAR, at Hofstra. She'll make you work, but her class alone is the perfect prep for the real world. She teaches useful knowledge that you'll retain for YEARS after the class ends. HIGHLY recommended!!!
she dowsn't know what she is talking about. She is a complete idiot.Don't take her
what a nightmare!! take another professor so u can save ur money and time.
great teacher. informs you of all relevant information. tells yo utest questions before hand. show up to class and participate sometimes and you will do fine
gives a lot of work and is sometimes overwhelming but she is very thorough
I have never seen a more disorganized professor. She constantly makes mistakes and writes all over the board, most of the time sideways. Most of the time I was completely lost in her class. I don't understand why people like her!!!!!!!!!
if you go to class and pay attention this class wil be easy. tests come straight from her notes. a lot of work but if you stay on top of it you will get a good grade.
she should be fired,, she has her children grade the exams, and she plays favorites
She was a great teacher
She plays favorites. Tough class mostly with her. Makes people feel stupid b/c they havn't worked at prestigous firms like merrill lynch.
she is the devil if you want to fail take her,, i had a 3.89 and i took her and she gave me a B it was the only B on my gpa
I liked her. I agree about playing favorites, but I was one of them and I wasnt even good at finance. I think I still only got a B, and it was hard work, but she taught well and I learned the material for the tests. She was very outgoing and friendly.
a really intelligent person. has alot to offer if you're willing to be dedicated to the class
come to class and you will be fine. frankly, i think she is totally hot . . .plus she knows her stuff and doesn't mind when class questions take her off topic or lecture outline. . .adore her.

Not good. not good at all.
WHAT WAS I THINKING(just kidding) bales is cool! but plays favorites ... loves the yield curve... teaches very disorganized(no structure in lectures)... should take a sign language course to understand her!!! take fin 141 first
Nice person but not a good teacher. Very disorganized, lazy. I are leaving the class with a huge question mark on your head. Hard tests, hard assignments, strict attendance. Basically Don't take her
Avoid this women. She loves to have her ass kissed, and plays favorites. If you take her make sure you do her hw, because she makes you go up to the board. Her test are all math
doesn't but up with the disrespectful jerks but thats cool in my opinion, a very intelligent person
Her course was very challenging but i thought she was a good teacher. I learned a lot in her class. If you are looking to really learn the material, she is a great prof. If you want an easy A, forget it. She is also very nice and personable.

Amazing professor. I learned more about bonds than I could have imagined there was to know. Fell in love with her on first night (yes literally) and it only got better from there. I actually looked forward to class. Hoping to take her for 141 in Spring05.
I love this woman! she is so hot! if she wasnt married i would so ask her out! omg she is so hot! I really didnt care about her course i just jion her class because she was hot!
mrs bales is soo hott! she rocks and so does missa! rock on i luv u best etacher ever!!! =0) super smart n so nice all u ppl who rated her bad get a life morons u r so hott!
She is a very good teacher. Will teach a lot about the Wall Street Journal in this class. Make sure you do well, be through, on the Market Monitoring Project. Is not easy, but you can do well if you go to class, take notes, no BOOK NEEDED!
SHE IS SOOOOOO COOL EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE HER CLASS!IF YOU DONT LIKE HER YOU STINK! AND SHE ONLY LETS HER KIDS FIND THE AVERAGES
If you are a good student you will get alot out of her class. If you are a lazy, direspectful bum she will make you look like a fool. I personally think shes a riot. Do the work and you should do fine
I really really really enjoyed this class. You will get a lot out of it if you pay attention and due your work. Take good notes and due your extra credit. Very good course with a very good teacher.

She is a great teacher hard to follow sometimes but when it comes to the tests they are straight forward. Slacker beware not a hard class but requires some effort.

She rambles on about nothing, she spent three weeks on presentations and a 1 week doing nothing, not the greatest professor she's nice, you learn something but her tests are not easy, the math is easy but the essays are hard, i would recommend her i guess not the greatest but not the worst, bond project is easy but get a good group
Professor Bales is the nicest lady at Hofstra her class is easy, test stright foward. She is very understanding professor, if you show you care she will reward you. Def do extra credits they are easy
Forget Bales,EVERY FINANCE major should take Dr.Esmeralda LYN she is the best
Every Finance major should take LYN. I like LYN. LYN is THE BEST teacher in all of Hofstra and she is way smart. So next semester EVERY I want EVERY BLOODY finance major to take LYN she is the BEST. LYN LYN
By far one of the best professors that Hofstra employs. She is intelligent and fair.
I really liked her. She is smart and gives good advice. Beware: She has this magic ability to tell if your an a** hole. If you put some effort in you should be fine.

Not difficult to understand, but sometimes she goes off and expects you to know what shes talking about. Tests are pretty hard. Half are essays about topics, second half math. Her essay topics are more difficult then the math, so stay ontop of your game
The Worst, stay away as much as possible. she doesn't know how to teach, she talks to you like if you were an expert. all you learn is how to read the WSJ and collect data. midterm and final is all essay of topics she doesn't know how to teach. so therefore is extremely hard. she doesn't use textbook. I learn more with the book then her teaching.
2 tests that are very hard.U must attend all classes bc tests are essays str8 from notes.she is a tuff grader. 1group pro (try 2 cover the major points &make it as simple as possible 2 get good grade).no text just read wsj.ALOT OF work 4 monitoring pro. but she gives lots of xtra credit 2 add points 2final grade. HARD class, take it if you dare...
You walk away from this class having learned alot..1 project, some HW that she checks, midterm, and a final.. Her tets are long and demanding..Do all the extra credit you can throughout the semester..Try to get on her good side..I got an A.. Don't slack!
It was an interesting class, I definitely learned a lot about Money and Capital Markets. She was very helpful, clear, and I didn't think she was a stingy grader at all. She was pretty generous in grading definitions and short answers, I thought. Just pay attention to her lectures and you will do fine!!! She will do what she can to help!!
Tests are tough, but if you put in the effort she will know and your FINAL grade will reflect that.
I can not believe students rate this professor HOT! I got an A in this class, but came out learning nothing. In another session, she gave only one lecture and the rest where presentations by the students themselves. Easy grader yes, but you learn nothing. A waste of $3000 WHEN I COULD HAVE LEARNED THE MATERIAL iIN A 3 DAY SEMINAR FOR MUCH LESS!
I came out learning nothing in this class. In summer session, she gave only one lecture and the rest where presentations by the students themselves. if you want only pass this class and learing nothing take her.wasting money..
she is rude and she doesn't know how to teach
Excellent professor, applies real world experience in analyzing capital markets, provides indepth insight into Banking Institutions, gets angry at wise ass students, which I think is amusing to say the least.
The Worst, stay away as much as possible. she doesn't know how to teach, all you learn is how to read the WSJ and collect data. she doesn't use textbook. I learn more with the book then her teaching.she is a disgrace!!
Excellent Professor. A lot of work but it only helps you. She offers extra credit and grades fairly. The exams are extremely long but she usually makes the final a take home and allows you to redo the midterm. I highly recommend.
Dean Bales is THE best teacher you will have at Hofstra. She is absolutely brilliant. She knows everything there is to know about financial market, fixed income, etc. You will learn an enormous amount from her. She is tough but that's what makes her so amazing. Take any class that she teaches. Be prepared to work hard.
Dean Bales is the BEST professor at Hofstra. She is a walking finance dictionary. She has A LOT of real life experience working in finance. If you work hard then you will gain so much from her. She made me truly love the industry. She makes everything interesting and relates it to the real world. TAKE HER FOR EVERY COURSE THAT YOU CAN!! I love her
She is the absolute worst. U dont learn a thing in her class all u do is collect data from the wsj test r hard hope she loses her job someone filed a lawsuit against her for the way she talks to students
Horrible Teacher!! Avoid at all costs! She will ruin your GPA and is extremely disorganized. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!
Not worth it people drop Finance as a major because of her, that class is a waste money and she shouldn't be teaching DONT DO IT
Professor doesn't adhere to her course syllabus. She gives very little feedback on student performance, and grades very subjectively since all work is non-quantitative. I WAS a finance major before, am an sad to say that her teaching style played role in the change.
The class may seem intimidating at first, but Dean Bales is a very nice professor, who ensures that you stay up to date with what is happening in the markets. The project is easy but gets tedious. However, being able to speak about the market cogently will help on interviews. You'll learn a lot in the class although it is not quantitatively based.
ONLY TAKE CLASS IN WINTER INTERCESSION. Read some articles which are kinda hard but does count as much. Attendence is important but your going on trips in the city 410 days. Final ok just takes awhile. If you've take a few finance classes should be easy.
Gioia thinks that she knows it all when it comes to finance because she worked as a research assistant in the field. She is awful at explaining things and I came out of class knowing less than I started with due to her confusing teaching style. Do not take her.
Good teacher. A lot of work is required in this class. 1 presentation that she grades easily. A midterm and a take-home final which are both somewhat difficult. Attendance is very important in this class. Don't need to buy a textbook because she gives you materials.
Enjoyable Lectures Especially if you are interested in pursuing a career in the financial Sector has real experience in the field and has exceptional speakers come to give lectures in this class, Truly the class i look forward to attending every tuesday & Thursday Although she may be vague with descriptions of assignments still good professor
Want to be a wallflower? Not in this class. She will call on you no matter how hard the question is, and make you feel like an idiot regardless if you get the question right or wrong. Wall Street Journal? You WILL be reading it ON THE DAILY. Market Monitoring Project? Get ready to research every stock index on the globe. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bales is an amazing connection to have. Her class is time consuming, but relevant and so important to learn as a finance major. Be prepared to get called on randomly, take good notes, and make a good impression. If you don't go to class, she will call you out in front of everyone. Hard work but lenient grading and offers extra credit.
Dean Bales is great but tough. Take really good notes and don't think about missing a class. I got an A but the midterm & take-home final are HARD. The projects aren't an easy A, you have to work but I learned a lot which has helped me in other classes and in general. Definitely do the extra credit! Overall, I would take her again
Dean Bales was a tough professor - I will warn that the semester-long market monitoring project was a doozy, but it was totally worth it. I learned so much from her class, but make sure you don't skip, & look over your notes before each class, because she asks each student a review question at the beginning of class. Do the work and you'll be fine.
There's no way around it--this class is a lot of work. The tests are long but she provides review material that prepares you aptly. Our final was take-home. Ultimately, all of the work was purposeful and I learned a ton from this class; Professor Bales requires a lot of her students but ultimately imparts a significant amount of knowledge.
If you're there to learn about Finance, and you're willing to work for that knowledge, you've come to no better place. Let's just leave it at that.
Dean Bales seems like a very nice lady but she doesn't take into account that people have other classes that are just as demanding. She is also, in my opinion, disorganized and all over the place. She doesn't seem to have a real game plan on what we are going to go over. And what we do go over, she doesn't talk about what it means. Horrible IMO
Dean Bales doesn't realize that students have other classes besides hers. She throws hundreds of articles at you every class and expects you to read and summarize every one. The semester-long project isn't hard but takes some time. It's hard to tell what will be on her tests because she's all over the place in lectures. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Simply put, this class is a lot of work. However, you learn so much valuable information over the semester. Bales offers so much extra credit so if you don't do well on an exam there are ways to make up for it. The semester long project is lengthy but also an easy grade. Put in the work and you'll be fine. AND THE FINAL IS TAKE HOME!!!
She is great. Learned so much but you have to participate in her class and know the answer to her question or else you dont look good. The project is not hard but very time consuming to do at the last day so do the project every week. Extra credit is given and barely any homework. Expect to read Wall Street Journal and take good notes. Not hard.
Dean Bales is extremely intelligent and respected. Would suggest taking the winter session class to anyone who wants to learn and build their network. Half lecture/ half meetings in the city with alumni. Learned more in 10 days than most full semester classes.
Overall, lots of useful information in this class, but terrible presentation of information. All over the place, my notes are completely random, and the class goes off on tangents a lot. Very difficult to keep track of. Lots of work. She is very disorganized and all over the place in lectures. Better to take someone else.
Dean Bales is the hardest toughest Prof I've had. She is a good administrator but a trash prof. There is no textbook and no PowerPoint, instead, you have long lectures with no structure behind them, you will be lost in your notes because of how many tangents she goes on. you learn from the term project but it was very difficult and tedious to do.
