Instructor added nothing to the course. Liked to brag about "all the consulting work" she does. Book had nothing to do with course, and was not used. I strongly advise you to avoid taking a class from this person, as she will add nothing to y
I took it as an online course. She was obsessed with the syllabus and gave us a test on it, believe me it was 30 pages. She's very tedious! I learned nothing and failed the course!
Class is challenging and detail-oriented. She is very rigorous, but smart and informative. Class really made me think.
SHe is a ****, her class suck, you learn some **** things, eventhough i pass this class is one of the worse class in the comm department, TOO MUCH TIME CONSUMING, WARNING DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS ****. YOU WILL REGRET IT IF U DO
If you are not a good writer or a critical learner and you expect high school level learning, then yes, you will struggle in this class. It is a good challenge but she provides a lot of support. Also, there is no longer a textbook. It's classes like this that will make PSU less of a joke.
This course has way too much work for a junior level course. Too many postings online each week, and the test questions were vague and what I would consider "trick" questions. She grades on grammar and spelling, yet her syllabus and online lectures were filled with grammar and spelling errors..sad
You have to be smart to do well in this class. The instructor is incredibly clear and helpful, but if you don't read well or write well it will be obvious. I learned a lot and was challenged. She does not give trick questions.
Students should note that this class is listed as a "WRITING INTENSIVE COURSE." Don't complain that there is too much writing.
I have taken two classes from her. While she expects a lot out of you she is more then willing to help, all you have to do is ask. The online course is a lot of work. She definitly loves what she teaches and is an excellent professor.
I HATE this class. Every week we have to do stupid postings and there is a TON of busy work to do in this class. I would not recommend it to anyone. So far over 30 people have dropped this class...... doesn't that give a little insight?
This woman was the absolute worst person to ever set foot into a classroom. She was never willing to compomise and will not hesitate to fail half of her class. I am not bitter about my grade, b/c I got an B+, however, I am extremely angry becasue she put our class from hell.
Took Communication and Gender online. There was a lot of work associated with this class but it made me think and I enjoyed the postings because they helped me formalize my own attitudes and beliefs about gender and society. Interesting how divergent these ratings are!
Material was 100 level at best, but work is at least 300 level. No one with her communications skills should be allowed to teach. Inconsistent, unclear, and unhelpful. She claims to do consulting, but consultants like her make people hate "team-building" stuff. I was so disappointed that I'm planning on writing the dean regarding her performance.
This class was one clusters and it took up more of my time and took away from the classes I should have focused on more. I hated it, and unless you have alot of time on your hands I definetly don't recomend it. There is alot of writing. Honestly, just be prepared to spend alot of time by the computer. She is not understanding either!
The work load was unreasonable and her attitude toward teaching seemed to be more a dictatorship than a partnership.I regreted taking this class and I have petitioned to retake it with another teacher. You've been warned!!!
Avoid this class! Busy work galore and at least 6 hours of writing every week plus other assigned grunt work. This class was challenging, but not very well organized. Also, it was way too much work for a Junior level course. Without a doubt, this was the class I hated most at PSU. Thank god it's over!
Communicating Feminism. Sounds great! Nightmare! Don't do it! You will be sorry; she is disorganized and scattered and unclear and throws out assignments willy nilly then expects you to put it all together in an organized hard copy format for a class that is 100% online (I turned 104 pages at the end of the class). Unless you like pain and agongy..
She is a horrible teacher. All assignments are BUSY WORK! The information level is 100, very basic, boring, and elementary. The amount of time you spend doing the work, 400+. I am not afraid of doing work, when it is meaningful! For your own sake, do NOT take her classes. I have never hated a class more, not even more than Physics!
I've never had so much work for a class that taught so little. The material was not difficult in of itself, but the overwhelming amount of nit-picking detailed questions and instructions and horrendous amount of pointless assignments left me little time for my other classes and left me drained. Never take this Prof. unless you are a sadist. The gro
She is the WORST Professor/Teacher I have ever had. You won't learn much but yet you will spend your time doing work where the topics are easy but the TA'S will mark you down for any comma you might miss. I was warned and didn't listen, PLEASE DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Im all 4 hard work but this was just pointless crap!!!! So her TA's and her :(
Her syllabus is over 8 pages! You need a translator to understand it!
Couldn't even begin to say how horrible this class was. I'm absolutely drained. Don't take her this class!!! I read the reviews and thought it couldn't be that bad. It's that bad! Don't do it!!!!
The quantity of work load is more overwhelming than other three 4-credit classes that I'm also taking COMBINED. You need to spend a lot of time on interviewing people, write endlessly almost everyday, read a whole lot of what other people have to say. This course feels like a graduate course but rewards you so little. Please save your sanity.
This is not an easy class, surprise, she expects college level work! Tests are relatively easy, most of the work is in weekly posts and a course long interview assignment. One of the more challenging classes I have taken, but worth it.
GenderCom. I liked this class a lot. I do not feel Gisele is getting a fair rating at all. To get an A, follow her guidelines! This is a hard class and you will have to work hard in it, so if you are not a strong writer or you're a slacker, don't take it, you will not do well. This class is designed to change how we think, it's not meaningles
Unreasonable workload and meaningless dribble. I am a post-bac with a 3.8 GPA and this class was an absolute waste of time. You spend more time trying to decipher her syllabus and meeting the very specific criteria therein than learning anything meaningful. I have nothing against hard work - but I don't like wasting my time.
I've done fairly well in the class. If you follow instructions (and they are very detailed with a 20 page syllabus) you will do great. My problem is with the amount of work - there is so much work in this class that it's hard to really learn or retain anything because you have to move on to the next thing. Every week there are three assignments due
I did well in her class, but I was quite surprised by the poorly written course lectures, especially for a communications class, consistently filled with spelling and grammar mistakes like sentence fragments and the like. These errors hindered effective communication because the mistakes were distracting, and since this was noted almost two years a
i took an online class. there was a lot of busy work, but if you get through that you'll probably get a good grade.
This class has a 20 page syllabus in 5 size font. It is meaningless, there are loads of busy work, and absolutely mind numbing. All you do is write post after post after post in her online class, and it is very hard to determine what you are learning, since everything you write is a reaction to something else. Super blah. Super boring.
After reading her 12 page syllabus I am still more confused then ever. She changes the requirements of writing weekly. It is confusing and very frustrating. She piles on the work and doesn't care whether you are getting the information that is needed to achieve understanding of the information that is in the class. Yucky teacher!
My bro-in-law took her online class a few years ago and when I started going to PSU, she was the only teacher he warned me of. I took her listening class, and actually really liked Gisele! While the class wasn't the most interesting I've ever taken, Gisele made it pretty fun. She seems really down-to-earth and really wants her students to do well.
I took her online gender comm course and be expected to make this course half of your life during the period you are taking it. Standard work is about 1500 word postings a week, don't forget the survey after each week. Some postings require more than simply reading the lecture. Instructions are headaches to read, pages of VERY small font. She's nice
Challenging, to be sure, but well worth it!
Horrible teacher. Expects students to do ridiculous amounts of busy work, has TA's grade everything, and dosen't even respond to emails. Avoid this class and teacher! I was warned and thought it wouldn't be that bad, it is!!!
Really nice lady... but it was a 200 level class that took more energy than any of my 300 or 400 level classes. I am a comm major and have never gotten below a B in any of my classes til I took her 200 level class! She gave me a b- due to a few absences. Would not recommend her classes. She is a really nice lady though.
(Cross listed as WS) She tries so hard to be clear and direct in her teaching style and course structure, but the lectures and assignments just end up being a difficult read: convoluted and fragmented at best. I now know it is possible to over-explain, over-teach. This course is like deciphering a new language altogether.
This is the best class I have ever taken, I have learned so much and you can tell she is very passionate about the content. I would like to take more of Gisele's classes in the future. Assignments do take time, but if you don't put them off, there shouldn't be a problem. The scrapbook assignment was my favorite, and I got so much out of it. A+ !
Worst Professor ever. Do not taker her. She gets satisfaction out of degrading her students.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. If you know how to read instructions, you'll do fine. She gives you the BEST step-by-step explanations to where you can't go wrong. If you do, you may be an idiot. This class was lots of reading and a good amount of time, but it helped me stay focused on my studies. It's an easy A if you do the work!
The online class is incredibly disorganized! It was impossible to follow everything, the work load is out of control. Do not take this class, you will regret it! (For the record, I'm an A student, not some slacker who doesn't care about school.)
I've taken three or four online classes by her out of sheer necessity. I was doing probably four to five hours of work a day to keep up, and it was made clear that we should parrot her own values or marked wrong. Just unbearable.
I took the communication and gender class online, and it was the worst online class ever. She grades, or her TA's grade way too hard. You get marked for every little thing and you have to post so much stuff it's just ridiculous. This was my pop culture cluster and it was a big mistake!
Online class was organized, but there was so much going on that it was hard to keep track of what was being taught. Not a confusing course but the lectures seemed forced and as if the instructor was making stuff up off the top of her head. She was very nice but not much help when needed. Steer clear if you don't want to waste your $ and time.
This class had more work than any other class I've taken. Very regimented. Lots of reading, both lectures and other posts. LOTS of writing plus several interviews/surveys, etc that are necessary to do the writing. Marks down for spelling and grammar errors even though the lectures are full of both to the point that they are often hard to follow.
Took her violence against children class (not online). Very interesting class and I highly recommend it. She is a good instructor, good personality, and the assignments are fun. The scrapbook should not be saved. Probably the only times I struggled in this class, was when I procrastinated. So don't procrastinate for this class.
Took online, very confusing at first, but then I got the hang of her layout. I was scared after reading her ratings, but I got an A without trying ridiculously hard. Do your work on time, and stick to her guidelines. She always emails back, and appears to enjoy this class a lot.
So this class was hard at first because this teacher is really into giving detailed instructions. But I got the hang of it, and it wasn't so bad. The class is pretty interesting and I learned a lot. I would recommend it but with a word of caution. This teacher words things very strangely (lectures midterm AND final). Also, lots of typos everywhere.
This course is very specific and detailed. The expectations are made clear at the beginning of the course, but they are extremely demanding. The tests are awful. There are 3 tests (50) questions, and they are the most confusing and pointless test's I've ever taken in my time at PSU. The workload is heavy, professor is demanding, I do not recommend.
This class was very challenging. The proff goes into depth about the requirements, so she is fair about providing information on how to succeed. Lots of reading, lots of participation, and lots of headaches. It did help me learn ALOT though, and I felt very accomplished when I finished with a good grade.
I've taken three classes from her and this one was the hardest. Her own opinions are strong; however, it opens your thoughts up to new perspectives. You'll get an A if you just do the work. But there is A LOT of work and more than I would have expected. I will never take another online class because of this class.
This is the most confusing and incomprehensible I have ever taken. The only thing I learned was how to write copious quantities of b.s. She demands at least 1200 words of bs a week. Her lectures and exams are rife with grammatical errors to the point of being gibberish. Avoid this class at all costs! I invested way too much time in this class.
I would not consider this professor as someone to use as a legitimate reference of her chosen subject. I felt as though there was a generous amount of generalizing in the prof's lectures and early morning rants, as they were called. I feel she is weakest in basic teaching skills.
This professor teaches directly from her brain. Her online lectures are extremely opinion based and when you disagree you lose points. This professor is extremely biased in a class where new ideas should be welcome. I regret taking this class and I feel like I have to censor my ideas and opinions. This is the worst online class I have ever taken.
This is the most biased women's studies course I've ever taken. Get ready to submit to endless, detailed instructions and to be micro managed by TAs. Over explains. Works from her own model. It wasn't even insightful if you have already been introduced to the idea of gender as a social construction. The language theory was basic, SP101.
Awful. Reading is horrible, she uses 8+ examples for every paragraph. by the time you are done reading examples, you forgot the purpose. has a ton of errors in her writing but is anal about what you write yourself. posts inappropriate judgements in her own posts. tons of work to do with no purpose. RUN if you can.i don't wish this class upon anyone
I took this course thinking that it was going to be easy.I was wrong. The professor required us to do a lot of reading and writing.I thought that the course material was extremely insightful.Other students have commented that she is biased but they obviously haven't read her lectures. She clearly states that the material is designed for exploration.
I am a senior and this is by far the worst teacher at Portland State. If you want to get anything out of your time at PSU do yourself a favor and never take a class from this person. All of her projects and writing assignments are completely pointless. Has zero organization as well.
This had more work than I've had in other online classes, but the instructions are easy to follow if you can get past the typos (which do appear to get fixed every now and then). Gisele is quick to reply to emails, but depending on what TA you get you may not always get a response about your grades.
She is terrible. Way to much work; huge group project, huge paper for the term project, another paper to complete with a verbal violence log, create a scrap book and on top of all this class is mandatory so you can't skip it to work on your projects! Oh and don't forget about the final exam.... Regret taking this class so much. AVOID!!!
Correction to the post right before this... Idk why it gave her a good quality but she is so bad that I took the time to come back and make it a bad quality.
Do not waste your time in her class! I got a 100% on 55% of the course grade and 88% for 45% of the course grade, 94.6%, she gave me an A- (not including extra credit). I didn't learn anything except that I should not have taken her class.
Worst instructor I've ever had at PSU. This class was a complete waste of time! Learned nothing! Poorly structured!
Most time consuming class I've taken thus far and I am a senior. Instructions are confusing, syllabus is long and convoluted. Interview project is unclear a large chunk of your grade. No text, just lots of links online.
Hard to understand, instructions are conflicting. Unfair grading structure. Lectures incomprehensible and difficult to read. RUN DO NOT take GENDER COMMUNICATION!!!
She is such a caring and awesome teacher, she teaches online people! online work isnt supposed to be easy despite what you think. word count counts because she wants to make sure you are taking the time to think. welcome to college. she's a great teacher, doesn't get back to emails often enough, but overall she is great!
It's supposed to be "dead week" yet we have a HUGE assignment. Typical of this teacher.Lots of work with no real purpose. Long and confusing instructions again. TA's grade way too hard.
why in the world do we have a big useless assignment right before finals? It makes so sense to rehash all the gibberish again and again and again. We've already gone over this and now we have to write 1000 more words about it! You'll need mental help when this class is through.
Very frustrating, most confusing online class I have taken. I may have felt different about this if I had taken it in class room, but she made it very complicated for an online class. Was not impressed with her communication skills given that she was teaching a"communication" class
Worst class ever taken! I am an A student and I received a C in her course. Her lectures are long and repetitive (8-10 pages single spaced, 8 pt. font) and her weekly online posting are ridiculous, 1-2 pages each, single spaced. All posts are graded by TA's and do not do a good job. I got a 4 out of 15 on a couple. Really? Do not take this class!
If you don't want to be left wondering why you received a "D" final grade in the class when: 1)you turn in all assignments 2)scored an "A" in midterms and "B" in finals 3)did extra credit work then DON'T take this course. The requirements for earning a good grade in this course is contradicting and confusing.I don't recommend this class to anyone.
Completely Useless.
Awful. Teacher comes across nice enough but the online course structure is baffling, hard to navigate and ultimately makes you just not care. Do yourself a favor, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
Hands down, the worst class and worst instructor I have EVER encountered in my 3+ years of college. Impossible to follow guidelines for every online discussion post that will be brutally picked apart by the micromanaging T.A.'s. TOTAL waste of time, energy, and frustration. Do not take this class unless you are a glutton for punishment.
This is the worst class I've taken. I'm a communications major so I absolutely hate when I don't like a class in my major. This was a totally online class that was useless to me in so many ways. I never heard from the professor even after I had sent emails and the test questions were ridiculous for an online class. Don't expect to enjoy this class.
This is literally the worst class I have ever been through. I am an honors student and this class was hard..Not because the material was advanced, textbook was dense or the information was new, but because the professor basically made up information in her own words and expected you to memorize only what she wants. I hope PSU realizes this.
Unclear expectations for course. Material was very wordy and hard to understand. Unfortunately, this is a required course for some majors. The structure really needs to be addressed.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. Teacher was confusing, and TA's grade way too hard considering expectations are unclear until AFTER a post is due. Do not take this course, waste of time and I learned absolutely nothing (she makes up her own material).
The most disorganized, confusing, unprofessional, class. Rated Zero in communication skills, useless topics are all made up by the instructor; it has no validity and reliability in what she feeds to her students. Rude and unprofessional TA, all I learned in this class profanity and bad words; it is disappointing for PSU to offer such courses.
What a nightmare! She doesn't respond to email requests for help; her TA is useless at answering questions, yet are happy to undergrade your work; after having A on all quizzes, A- for mid-term and final, got only C's and D's for the posts. When asked to explain the grading in detail, all I got was a short, "off-topic"? WHAT???!!!!
Worst professor!! Absolutely no clarity or rational concept. She thinks because she's a comm professor, she's an amazing communicator. Yet she can't properly communicate what is expected in an assignment. She engages in circular discussions during class and doesn't even realize it. (Some communications expert...) She has no business teaching.
Ms. Tierney is very clear about her goals for the class, and her TA's have specific guidelines with which to grade. This is a communication course, of course in order to communicate on-line you will need to write, a lot. there are word counts and rules, if followed will result in a good decent grade. You don't even have to buy a book. D
Awful class. I am dumbfounded as to why this is even a class. The online "lectures" were totally confusing. The tests were out of the textbook, but the questions were so vague, I asked for help after each test and was told to read the book and online lectures more closely. Not helpful.
ABSOLUTELY the worst instructor I have ever encountered. 2 years after taking her class, I am still haunted by it, like I have PTSD. Honestly, stay away from this class unless you want nightmares for the rest of your life. This instructor forces an experimental communication (made-up by her) technique that is both ineffective and insane. Terrible!!
I understand other people's frustrations because there is a lot of work to do in the online classes. However, the people that are baffled by their poor grades clearly did not read the syllabus or follow course directions. Expectations are outlined every step of the way and there is a method to the madness.
By far the most hated class I have ever taken. The teacher has very strict guidelines for assignments; and not matter how hard you try and hours spent on assignment its almost impossible to get a 100% on it.. The information is boring and lectures are WAYYY to long. Too much work and didn't even learn anything.
This class was not difficult to get a good grade in. Two weekly postings +survey, along with a midterm and a final. What was somewhat difficult were the tests. The wording and phrasing of tests are somewhat subjective and could go for many different responses. Take with a group if you can.
such a joke! Wants thought out disc posts but has a word limit that literally limits a thought out post.Says she cares about plagiarism but didn't do anything when a student clearly copied my online post.Midterm/final exams weren't clear at all (question-wise).I wouldve stayed away fr taking another class with her but she teaches everything...
I really enjoy here as an instructor. Sometimes her guidelines are not clear, but ask and she will specify. Very engaging discussions in class and she's very nice.
Not at all what I expected. If you are hoping to learn how men and women can learn to communicate better with each other, this is the wrong class to take. Instead you learn how we are all the same and society just makes us think we are different. Bright side: not difficult once you learn to navigate all the crazy posting rules.
Awful class. No textbook, lectures are created by prof, not sure where actual information is coming from. Prof is awful communicator, which seems odd for a comm class. Grading is confusing, exact same classwork every week. Boring, uninspiring, zero practical value. Stay away from any class she teaches. Terrible
Should be labeled a Writing Intensive Class. 1500+ Words per week in posting. Post are graded inconsistently by TA's. Some quiz questions are vague and subjective. Because of all the busy work it is hard to learn and retain any of the info in the class. The Teacher seems nice. If you want to keep your sanity take a different class.
I have had 3 classes with Gisele now, two in class and one online, all communication classes. Her online classes requires more work than her in class classes, and she is a little unorganized because she doesn't have powerpoint slides.. as long as you GO to the classes you will get an A. seriously. btw she's a bundle of love, sweetest teacher ever.
Comm&Gender online class. If your assignments were counted off - no REAL feedback was provided except W-for writing errors or other one letter feedback nonsense. Strict deadlines with severe point deductions if one day late. So if you have a life that may throw you curve balls - dont take this class, she does not care & will not extend your assgmt.
If you do the work and put in the effort to understand the material, the course is not very difficult to pass. Take the time to develope your own ideas and thoughts, then be ready to elaborate. Grading is clearly defined and rigid (not a bad thing, you know exactly how she is going to grade, there is no gray area).
I love all of Tierney's online courses because they are structure the same. Do the discussion posts, apply readings, hit her word count requirement and you will be fine. Readings are very easy and make sure to read the concepts attached to syllabus. Some are in there and not the readings and you will be quizzed on them.
I took her communication class. For an instructor offering a communication class, I found her instructions for assignments and syllabus outline, long-winded, unclear, unorganized, and confusing. She didn't respond to specific questions I had regarding assignments. The questions for exams were vague, and word-count requirement was strict.
For a communication instructor there is a ton of sifting through documents to find out exactly what she wants. Very tough grader and get ready to write. About 1300 words a week are required and most of it is anything but interesting. There is little to take away from this class other than learning how to use Rate My Professor more accurately.
Absolutely atrocious. The class is basically a series of regurgitation of the text in "discussion" posts. If you even try and introduce an original idea you will be docked points. It's her way or the highway. You either adopt or pretend to adopt her mindset or you won't pass.
A lot of writing for an online class. I think word count is more important than content. Be prepared to write a bunch of fluff. I didn't really learn much from this class, it was structured more like a self help guide to communication practices.
Tierney is a smooth-sailing professor. All of her online classes are structured the same, and her lecture classes are really easy to follow along with. Typically no book is required and she has few to no tests. Her online classes only require discussion posts. Would take her again!
I'm taking an online class with her, and I'm just over it really. She assigns novels to read when she could much easily compact the things we need to know into bullet points, she grades tough, and assigns long ass writing assignments that take up more time than my four other classes. She expects you to meet a ridiculous word count without fluff.
I don't normally write these, but, I am taking both COMM and gender and COMM and groups with Gisel, both online. And I feel like I am being torchured. This is the worst online class I've ever taken. The information is not organized, she does not return emails until it is too late. There is a huge amount of fluff writing. NOT A GOOD PROOF OR CLASS.
Comm 337 was the hardest online class I have ever taken. The weekly posts (2 posts a week) are time consuming, difficult to write for her specific specifications, and pointless. She marks you down if you say your opinion in posts and her lectures and mini lectures are pages long with only paragraphs where she just runs on. Don't take this class.
She is one of the worst teachers i have ever taken. Her classes are just her talking the entire time. And a total waste of time.
This class is ridiculous. Way too much work for an online class, her lecture are a jumbled mess, and her directions are the opposite of cohesive. SO much reading. You have to write like 800 words in discussion posts two times a week, weekly quizzes, but thankfully the tests are easy. Boring and feels like busy work.
crazy long discussion posts due every week (twice a week). Wouldn't suggest this course at all, she doesn't even grade your work she has a teaching assistant due all her work. Never even communicated with our class.
Workload for this class is super heavy. Instructions are often unclear and test questions are vague & hard to interpret. I spent 4 hours yesterday staring at my computer just trying to decide how to start my discussion post. This week alone was 65 pgs of reading, min. 900 words discussion (no responses this week, thankfully), +long, hard quiz.
COMM313U This was the hardest online class I've ever taken. A workload equivalent to my three other classes this term. All of it was fluff writing. Word count grade. Graded by TA's, no teacher contact. Unclear instructions; it's like Word had a seizure of italicize, bold, and underline. Do not take the class. Drop the class. You've been warned
Avoid. She doesn't teach anything. She is rude and unavailable. Her assignments are time consuming and not valuable.
This course has some interesting info, but the lectures are so convoluted that one is unable to discern actual lessons from the writing. Weekly posts and 2 exams per term are difficult as the material covered is muddled/ TLDR. Clear structured material would go a long way to help this course. All around I would suggest not taking this course.
Wow where do I start. Don't take her for any class. The terms and vocab that she uses are unique to well, the world apparently. Words that have no meaning outside of PSU like, Throughput Variables, Groupness, Groupflow, and many more words and phrases that you will not be able to find on the web. It's all nonsense and PSU needs to look into ths
None of this class makes sense. If you do not have the same opinions as her, be ready for a tough time. As well, the class format is incredibly confusing- I am not sure if that is because its online, or just how she does it... but it makes it very difficult & hard to follow. I would definitely not recommend taking this class online.
Her classes are confusing. I don't understand how PSU can keep for so long, someone with such little teaching skills. Her lectures are confusing and hard to follow. If you attempt to challenge her views, you ought to be ready to become her enemy. She has weekly 500-word assignments and will mark you down if you do one more or less word. Stay away!
Prof doesn't care much about the class or students. Numerous grammatical errors in lectures and on tests (both midterm and final). Formatting of D2L page makes it hard to navigate. Formatting of lectures and readings are difficult to read. All of this makes the class hard to understand. Material doesn't seem current to topic and other COMM classes.
Don't take this class. I spent at least 3 hours every night trying to figure out what the discussion question is asking. She is extremely disorganized, and you must read over the lectures (14 pages long) at least 4 times to understand them. The TA's grade your posts, so expect no more than a C or B on the discussions that took 5 hours to finish.
Gisele gives work and homework out like her class is the only class that you take. I read and re read through pages of disorganized lecture, followed her "guidelines" and still never got better than a B. This is the first class I've taken that I have gotten less than an A. I am a Junior. Now my GPA lowered, Awful.
Worst professor I have ever had. Doesn't respond to emails and complicated instructions. Nothing made sense. No one learned anything. Mainly online course and everyone is doing poorly. Don't bother with this professor its a guaranteed F!
I am very disappointed in PSU for this one. First off, I have taken two years worth of online classes and this was the most confusing class I've EVER taken. Be prepared for a different style of teaching. She also hasn't replied to 3 emails I sent her WEEKS ago. The material is easy, it is the setup that is annoying. Also, she uses D2L email..
Way too much information crammed into this class! VERY homework/reading heavy- fine if it's the only class you're taking. Instructions alone are lengthy! I took it online and am wondering if maybe it's just a class that should be taken in person. Interesting material and straight forward mid-term and final (multiple choice and true/false).
My 3rd year taking online classes and this is by far the most unorganized, agonizing and unnecessary class I have ever taken. It takes me hours to even read through the instructions and the assignments are so repetitive I almost threw my computer against a wall. You write thousands of words per day and have NO time to complete. Didn't learn a thing
This is honestly the worst class I have ever taken. The teacher is an absolute horror. The course material makes absolutely no sense. I honestly can't believe this is a professor. I swear, I read these ratings before I took the class and thought, oh it can't be that bad. I was woefully wrong. I am only in week 4 and I can't believe it's this bad.
Prof. Tierney, not other students, created an environment where opposing opinions would affect your grade. We were required to write a paper defending her opinion that the "Declaration of Independence is cruel". Elsewhere, she provided 16 articles from a pro perspective and 2 dismissive quotes about a con perspective. Also, very disorganized.
Writing another review because of how terrible this class is. Another week, another painfully long essay with no context. Debating reporting to PSU. I'm an honors student and have been the entirety of my college career and I honestly don't know If I can complete this course.
This professor acts like they're punishing you for taking their class. I was genuinely excited to learn about gender and communication, but these are some impossible grading standards. I am a junior with an excellent GPA and this is by far the worst professor I've had. I don't like to complain about rigor of coursework... but this is bad.
I wrote the review on 07/31/2019, and I want to clear this up because I was wrong. After finishing the course I realized how misguided my review was. The course is challenging, but there is a good reason for this, and it made much more sense by the course conclusion. This is a good course and very illuminating in many ways. Just clearing that up.
My tags: Disorganized, confusing, and worthless. The lecture is an absolute waste of my time, incredibly confusing, and no actual plan or points made. Most days are "group discussions" which have little direction and don't need nearly as much time as she provides. As my classmate put it "can we get our money back for this class".
This class was very time consuming, and it's not even for my major. It was a university studies class I had to take. The discussion posts take about two hours to do, because you want to put effort into it to get a decent grade. Your opinions do not matter in this class, even if she asks for them, you will lose points on discussion posts for this :(
The professor as well as her TAs were really bad with communication. They limited themselves to contact only through D2L. Many professors I have had in the past advised against this due to the common errors. I emailed for weeks concerning confusing and non specific feed back. When I finally got a response, it was wildly underwhelming with 0 remorse
Before taking this class I was super scared, I saw the reviews and avoided it until I needed to take one of her courses. She gives discussion pots that involve a lot of work, 3 book reports in her class and 1 big paper as the final. Definitely lots of work, and makes you put in effort. Not an easy class but not the worst.
WORST TEACHER EVER PERIOD........
I took COMM337U over this summer online with no lecture meetings, so I can only speak to that. I barely interacted with her but she seemed nice enough. Read the short lectures, do the (admittedly tedious and long) discussion posts, and take the two exams. She even offered opportunities for extra credit. It's easy to understand if you do the work.
Terribly structured class. The discussion postings due every week are completely ridiculous. A ton of busy work and she expects you to write 1000+ words plus every week. In one discussion post we even had to grade our fellow classmates discussion posts. Weird.. Avoid if you can.
I will never take a class by her again. I was so excited about this class and it's possibly the laziest way to "teach". It takes practically 2 hours just to figure out the instruction.
What blows my mind the most is the fact that she put a question from the syllabus on the midterm. I urge people to not take any courses with her. She clearly doesn't care about the students.
Awful class, all busy work. I did learn a lot, but in that format, it was like tearing my eyelashes out every time I had to do homework. Boring, bland, and WAY too much work. Plus, the professor hardly did any teaching. There are extra credit options, but you might not have time given all the other assignments...
This was one of the worst courses I have every taken & sucks it was my first semester @ PSU when I did it. Tons of busy work and none of it is taught by her. I dont even understand how she was a professor all the TA'S do the work I never once talked to the professor she has 5+ TA's and puts everyone into groups per each TA.
This professor has very harsh, yet unclear grading. It is clearly stated in each assignment AND the syllabus what is required of each assignment. However, when actually grading, Tierney will give praise on what you did right, but not give feedback on what was missing or incorrect, resulting in a low grade and no comments/feedback on why.
Such an amazing class. It was very educational and inspiring. The homework load was very intense and the professor is a harsh grader.
Don't Take her class, She ruined my experience of the course. I love communication courses, but with her, it was a boring and monotonous series of discussion posts that felt nothing but exhausting. Her Teaching style is ridiculous and I don't understand why the college is letting her teach the course.
