a very informative class and easy teacher
A wonderful class that everyone must take. The professor is very clear and good.
Read the book for the quizzes...once

this guy knows his stuff, comes straight from his head. listen to the cool tunes he plays and take good notes. you'll be set for the final exam. =) batman...batman, batman, batman!
Great teacher with great musical background
Pretty funny guy. Every day plays something pretty hip on the speakers in class. Lets you know in the beginning the class will be easy and he does it on purpose. Its one class I don't miss just for all the awesome music and info.
Knows his stuff very well. Not Boring. Tests come right out of the text book. Easy Grader
Pretty chill class. I only attended maybe 10 times and still got a good grade. Hes kind of boring but trys to be funny. Just take good notes or read the book and you will Ace.
Great! The music he plays is great. He plays music in class everyday. Grades on a super awsome curve which make 25% of the class get As. Just take notes in class and you ace. or read the book, and get the nots from someone else. Best class yet.
EASY CLASS... DONT WALK IN LATE WITH A JAMBA JUICE! HE GETS MAD!
He is boring as hell and kills an otherwise interesting subject.
This guy is really into jazz and because of this, he can come off quite overwhelming. There is a lot of info in this class and he spews it out like its nothing. His tests are also overwhelming, but he grades on a curve, so you usually will be ok.
chill teacher. dont be overwhelmed by his lectures. take notes. grades on a huge curve which can help you get a whole grade higher. didnt go to class for about a month and a half straight. still got an A!! EVERYONE should take this class
A good GE class to take. Easy teacher, lecture can be uneasy because you sit on chairs instead of desks.
Good interesting class, Fairly easy. HArd to take notes because of not having desks. Good knowledge to have.

A class where you must hear music to pass! What could be more fun. Professor Glenn's a sax player and a Steely Dan freak. Learn all the sax players' names he spews out, and read the text for fun. Tests are based on the notes and jazz history mostly.
The class is fun. you listen to music everyday and you learn a lot about its history and theory. very easy class. doesn't take attendance, and as long as you take the test you will not fail, lowest grade on test is a D.
this class was my all time favorite. It ruled, really opened my up to Jazz.
excellent professor. he really knows his music. i like how he's more into the music than the grade. cuz on his test, i was supposed to get an F, but w/ his curve i got a B.
He is a great professor who makes jokes and knows a lot...Not a hard class as long as you pay attention and take note because everything is from notes and some of it from the book
Can be intimidating at first but really isn't. Just never come late to class, especially on test days. I read very little and got an A in the class. He also knows what he's talking about. Plays lots of music. Take good notes.
Awesome class. All you do is listen to the history of music and the actual music itself. Don't bother buying the book, i never even opened it and i got an A in the class... very interesting, and great professor.
Extremely good class. He goes over the test questions from the lecture at the end of each class- Still listening to some of the music now. Hardest part is missing Laker games to attend class- sometimes.
Great teacher, EASY tests if you go to class or even if you are just kinda sharp
easy going teacher. gives out hints to test questions. it's just hard to pay attention during lectures.
Glenn is the master of Jazz. He knows everything about it. He plays tons of music in class and will ALWAYS help anyone who needs it. Take his class, you wont regret it!
Awesome class- Glenn's very passionate and knowledgable. Gave me a new goal in life- to be in a Jazz Band! One of the best lecturers I ever had!
should have failed..gave me B...amazing teacher..i never went to class.
Cool professor. Not one desk in class, just chairs =/ The whole class consists of a lecture for 75 minutes. Class gets boring, plays about 5 songs a class. Notetaking every class. You're just listening the entire time. Good notes=Great grade. Just review!
He's a cool cat.
He is the best professor ive ever had. I hated jazz and rock music before i took his class. Now all i do listen to the music he plays in the class. He is clear, funny, and a very passionate and knowledgable teacher. AND HIS GRADING RULES!!!!!
He is so awesome! He grades like a champ and is pure comedy! It is the EASIEST class I've had! You can totally tell he got a lot of chicks when he was younger 'cause he's so smooth and his jokes are so corny it's cute.
This class has made me appreciate the music i listen today because of all the history behind it. he plays alot of great songs. many notes to be taken but well worth it. tests are easy. just an easy class overall.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! out of all the courses i take this semester, i enjoy going to this class the most (even though it's on tue. and thur.'s). Really interesting, sometimes says funny stuff. He's a nice, friendly guy. I wish i could take this class again heh. Take this guy you'll love it!
His lecture was very helpful and interesting. Test questions are from reviews, and they are very clear and easy.
Easy, easy, easy. I think everyone should take this class in order to boost the average CSUN GPA and make our school more reputable. The class is very interesting, he plays music during class and gives great lectures about the backrounds of each of the bands. The tests are based on lectures.
So awesome and life-altering. I am so uncreative when it comes to making music, but learning about it and its history makes me feel better about myself :) Great teacher, great subject. Take notes - it's not that hard.
He's a GREAT teacher. Gives hints as to what's going to be on the exams, so listen and take good notes. Lectures are very informative and interesting, but can be boring at times. I highly recommend taking him.
It is virtually impossible to do bad in this class. He gives clues through out the session on what will be on the midterms. If you go to class, you will get an A. Ohhhh!!! His curve is awesome!
As long as you love American muscis of 20th century, you will like it. otherwise, i do not recommend this class.
He's very passionate about jazz, and I learned a lot. He's a little aloof, but grades pretty fairly. I made a B on the midterm and final, and turned in all my papers on the last day of class, but still got an A in the class. Get to know him and he has a lot to offer. Take good notes!
This is one of the easiest classes I ever take. All you have to do take good notes, listen to him little and I guarantee that u will get an A.
he gave me a "D." only because i did bad on his easy ass test but then again i gotta say that he is kool teacher.
Easiest teacher ever if you come and take notes... read the book just to gurantee your A too. The curve is so bloated it's almost ridiculous. Didn't exactly teach what I wanted him to teach me though... the class focuses on things that arent as important as other things. Could have better material.
I have to say he isone of the best professors I ever had. He is so passionate about teaching the class that makes u feel more willing to get good grade in his class. Very clear and funny, makes the lectures entertaining. Grades very fairly and loves to talk about musicians' stories. Thanks Garret!
this guy is so dam easy.. just sit and listin to music.
I rarely went to class. Still pulled a C. If you go to class every day and pay attention you will definitely get an A. Some of the lectures were boring, but some were very interesting...
He's a hip guy. His class is pretty easy, you have to be an idiot not to pass. If you just show up to all of his test you get an automatic C-. He's not about failing students and his class is pretty chill. HE ISN'T HARD AT ALL!
Get ready to take ALOT of notes. There are no desks, non stop writing from beginning to end on your lap. Tests are not hard, but you have to study all your notes. No Joke. Nice guy, class is packed with people. If you dont study, dont take this. BE PREPARED TO TAKE NOTES FOR THE WHOLE CLASS PERIOD.

BATMAAAAN...BATMAAAANNN.. BATMAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN. THATS ABOUT ALL I MEMBER FROM THIS CLASS
so I don't like music.... at least the music in his class but hey........batman.....batman.......batmaaaaaaaaaaannnn!!!!! Now I'm interested in b-bop, rock-a-billy, and all that jazz..
Best class ever. This guy is so cool that i whish i could take more classes with him. Veery easy & interesting class. He plays music everyday and knows a lot of stuff. Also his test are easy, just take good notes.
Great guy. Funny, lots of notes, good music. Pretty easy overall, although there is quite a bit of notetaking involved.
Very easy class. What a grading curve!! He knows so much about music and I had a great time.
This class is easy if you only take GOOD notes non-stop, some questions on the test are not from notes but from the book as well.
if you know about music take the class because then he teaches you stuff you already know. if you don't then take the class but you may need to study. note taking is indicative to how much you know. his class is an EASY A. the guy knows a lot but he is kind of a jackass though and by the end of the semester i couldn't stand him.
Boring class...looong lectures and no table.
very good teacher. good music in class, interesting, but LOTS of notes to take. but just do it, its worth it. tests are curved, just study your notes the night before. good guy...highly recommend!
Booooorrrrrriiiiiinngg! It was so hard to stay awake, so I only went for the first month and when we had a test, which was 4 times after that. I never ever studied or took notes and still got a C+.
I took notes the first half of class and got a low C on the Midterm but only because he has a huge curve. I went into the final not knowing anything. I didnt study and had not gone to the class for about 4 or 5 weeks in a row. I guess my way through the whole final and I still passed the class.
Take notes gor God's Sake and all will be well. Don't take note and kiss it good bye. You will know Jazz when you are done.
Teacher does his best to make somewhat boring information interesting. If you attend all classes and take notes, there is no way you will get lower than a B- in this class. He puts all the info in front of you, its your job to just remember it on the tests. There are no surprises here. Pretty much my easiest A ever.

If you like music, take this class!! I can't believe people are saying it was boring. He is very informative and the tests are SUPER easy. I ended up with something like an A+++. It was so interesting. However, if you don't care about music and it's history then don't take the class and waste chair space.
THIS GUY KNOWS HIS****. He's cool, he's smart, he's funny. YOU WILL LEARN FROM THIS MAN. People that don't like him: a) don't know**** about music or b) are pissed because they learned that they don't know**** about music.
GIVES WAY TOO MUCH INFO THAT NO1 NEEDS......NO DESK...A LOT OF NOTES...CHILL TEACHER THO PS...BATMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN
Ok, so he had interesting material to work with...but I loved this class. He really knows his stuff and makes sure we get it too.

Show up to scheduled test date, and no matter how bad you do, you atleast get a C-
This guy knows his material. I learned a lot from him and learned why I like variety of music because of this guy. he might seem like a jackass at first but he's a great guy. attendance is a must. don't miss class or you will miss out a lot on what will be on the tests. read the text, listen to lotta music (not just what you normally listen to), and do all your**** and you will be fine
This class is so easy you are guaranteed a C- as long as you take the test. He has a very low curve.
very funny teacher. his tests are easy because he gives us study guides two weeks before each midterm.. review the study guide and u'll do good. but if u wanna do better of course take good notes n study them.. it is hard to stay awake in his class but it's an EASY A!
This is an easy class. His midterms are based on lectures and questions from the book but he gives study guides to which questions he is using from the book. The lectures are boring but 80% of lectures are on the midterm. Attend class, take notes and you'll get at least a B.
Chill class, come in for lectures and you will do fine.
cool teacher, but hates when ur late for test. the class is boring at the begining then it gets better toward the end. His test are easy if you take good noted and study his study guide. its and easy A.
I went to class once a week and got a B. I did study for tests and final. They were all based off the book and the study guides. I recommend this class if you need an easy class for your schedule.
if you like rock music and old school blues funk....take this class...garrett is so cool, hes the man, i wish he taught like 30 of these classes and they all fulfilled GE requirements... take his class... be ontime,,, rock out with him
Just go to the lectures and take good notes. He does a good job of going everything important so you know it will be on the test. Study guides are easy points and gold in his class. A true lover of music and a good class for any musicians or music lovers.
does not take roll, but will not give you study guides if u dont show up that day. gives u all the information u need to know, just know the study guides. i went to class not knowing there was a test that day and passed with a C. He knows his stuff and is a very nice and laid back guy. Just never be late for tests, EVER!
only 3 things that u have to avoid for not being on his -ve side;- don't come late (specially on his quizes & exam), don't bring any food or drink in the class, don't sit at the end when there is one available right in front. make sure to listen him carefully and take good notes. if got a chance then study the book otherwise will be fine still.
Great Teacher! If you're shooting for an A like I did, you wont even think about missing one class meeting... atleast 30% of the exam questions are from the notes, so be sure and take good notes.. other than that, study his study guide, glance the book if you have time, and you'll do well.
Wow wow wow... Come to class...and do the study guides. no class work or anything. there are three midterms that are pretty straight forward from the study guides and a final. if you have an A you dont take the final. The class is on a curve so anyone can get an A. SUPPERR EASSY.. great professor so awesome... i wish every class is like this one
This class was boring. It is very easy to pass because professor Garrett grades on a curve. Easy to get an A. A class to take if you need to have a boost.
He is one of the nicest teachers. His class is very interesting and easy if you pay attention. He gets mad only if you talk during the music and when he is talking. There are 2 midterms and a final. All have study guides. And he curves.

coolest teacher ever. wears dickies and chucks and is a real musician so he knows his stuff. has teaching notes on old envelopes. plays awesome music. really nice guy and tells great stories
totallllllllly awesome!!!!
This was an extremely fun class. I loved it. Glen was awesome. You read the book, listen to music, and discuss what you read and heard. A lot of history. It's absolutely great. Highly recommend.

hes such a great prof! his lectures are his midterm questions. the class is easy if you do the study guides, go to a few lectures and take some notes. he makes the class easy.
I feel bad. I rarely showed up for class. He is an awesome professor, and highly intelligent. The material at first is boring for many, but as I've come to realize is gets a whole lot better at the end. I would definately take another class with this professor if given the opportunity.
I showed up for the first half and then once in a while the second half. The prof. is great , honest , and very knowledgeable . If you show up you will learn something. I enjoyed this music class more than any other i had to go to . Great Class.
Awesome Class, and awesome teacher. I learned so much and it just made me love music even more. Showing up to class isnt madatory but you should go because he gives lots of notes that end up in the test. which there are only like 3. Two test and the final. so if you take notes and complete the study you will get a good grade.
He’s a funny, knowledgeable professor. Very easy class. Just go to class and take notes..you'll do just fine. He gives out chap. reviews before the midterms. If you do good on all your midterms, you are excused from the final which is awesome. This class gave me appreciation for the history of music. I really enjoyed it. Take him!!
Teacher knows his stuff. If you are not even slightly interested in jazz DO NOT take this class. The teacher won't let you fail though so atleast you are guaranteed a passing grade. Tests are extremely hard though.
Attendance isnt mandatory. Make sure you study your notes, not just the study guide for the tests...If you do that, easy A.
He's a nice easy going guy. I wasn't interested in Jazz music at first, but after taking the class, I find myself listening to it!! But I have to say- the late night class gets boring, 2 hours straight of him rambling on and on:P Easy B, but a little more effort for an A:)..
Really cool guy. Talks A LOT and it gets kind of boring after listening to him for four hours two nights a week. Only 2 tests and 2 assignments. Get it all done and you get a passing grade - of course it depends on how much effort you put into it.
This was the 2nd class I took with Garrett. He is the best professor. Knows music inside and out and is always playing great music in class. Easiest A you can get. Just go to class, take notes, and review them before the exam and there's no way you can't get an A. He's awesome.
Very easy class!!! Take it. He gives answers to tests and the study guide is very helpful!!
Really interesting guy. Good professor. Long lectures. Great music played in class.
EASY CLASS GIVES OTU STUDY GUIDES AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SET OF READINGS GIVES THE ANSWER TO THEM IN HIS LECTURES ALL THE TEST Q'S COME FROM THE STUDU GUIDE...GREAT MUSIC PLAYED IN CLASS...GIVES OUT EXTRA CREDIT...U DEF LEARN ABOUT MUSIC EVEN IF U AINT A MUSIC MAJOR U WILL FIND IT INTERESTING...ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY
If you really like learning about music, then you will definitely love this class. The class is definitely easy though. Attendance does not matter at all and he gives study guides before every exam. Must take if you need music class. I have the new edition book needed with CD in great condition (a little highlighted) email me at [email protected]
Glen is a GREAT music teacher! Come to his classes ready to learn the subject and enjoy the music. If you're there for an easy 3 units, to talk to neighbor or play with your cell, you're in the wrong class. If you're there to learn about America's Music & expand your mind, you're gonna love it.
This prof is one of the best if you really get to know him. His tests are a little bit hard, but he give you a study guide and he also offers 10 points of extra credit for the exams. i did not study alot at all for the exams, and i still came out with a A-. there are three tests, and a final that are 80 questions multiple choice. he is eassssy!!!!!
Knows his stuff completely and teaches well, but gets a little boring with his low volume monotone, otherwise attend the lectures and tests will be easy. I got an easy A, but attended every lecture. You don't need to buy the book if you go to class and take good notes. If you ace the first 3 tests, you don't need Final. I definitely recommend him.
Easiest class @ CSUN and my fav class of the semester. Really interesting if you're into any type of music. Take good notes and fill in the study guides. There are three tests and a final. If you get A's for the first three tests he'll let you leave the class a few weeks early and you'll have an A in the class no matter what. Highly recommended!
this is the easiest class offered in csun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boring class - he just self-talking on and on for hours. But it's still amazing to see that he just takes out of his mind all the trivial things about every musicians in the jazz history. Take notes and you'll pass.
When I had him for Mus 107, we rarely used the book and just listened to him speak in a lecture form. Don't even buy the book, just get the CD and look up the answers to the study guide online. You'll get an A from that I'm sure. I got an A- with missing like 7-8 classes here and there. Don't miss on test days and you'll be fine :)
OMG the biggest bore in the world. His class was so difficult to go to because of his monotone lectures that are scattered everywhere! yes, the class is easy but your sanity is not worth it!
Even though attendance is not mandatory you still want to go because he tells you whats on the test every class. And that's better than reading the entire book. He's a cool guy, especially if you go to class.
easy A class. just go to class, take notes, and you'll be fine. great way to bring up your gpa!
This was probably the best class I have ever taken. Glen is a wonderful professor with passion for the subject. I wish more professors loved their subjects like he does. If you don't have an open mind with music, don't take the class. As long as you take detailed notes and study for the tests, you will get an A. It really isn't hard.
Coolest teacher at CSUN. Plays great music, has a real passion for the subject.
Hes an easy teacher but his lectures areeee boringggggg
Love Glen. He loves music and enjoys teaching. Just take good notes and you'll be able to get an A. If not familiar with names (a lot of them), then try to read the book. Gives test review before each test. Curves. Recommend! :)
This teacher is interesting, he really loves what he is talking about, but jumps around alot on his subjects. as long as you take notes in the lectures then you will do fine on the tests, just TAKE NOTES!
Yes, his lectures can be boring and tend to be scattered, but he is a cool guy with a good knowledge of music. It's an easy class if you feign interest.
He's a cool old man. you need to pay attention, skim the book, and TAKE NOTES, if he says it more than once its one the test!
Awesome teacher. Curves both tests so easy A is you study. Tests are based mostly on the lecture with some stuff from the text. LOVES to teach and is super knowledgeable about the subject. If you take anything from the class and are open-minded about your music there is definitely something in there you'll get into long after the class is over.
Awesome class! Professor Garret has such passion for what he is teaching that he makes it really interesting. If you love Rock and Roll music, take this class, and if you don't, you definitely should. This class gives you a whole new appreciation for music. Very lecture heavy. The notes are vital for the 4 tests. Read the book too!
WISE MAN! I love this guy, no homo. He rarely needs to see or use any notes, he knows his music and makes me feel confident that I am getting top notch information. I STRONGLY recommend his class. It may be boring at times but if you would want to take a day off, you welcomed to. BUT... that means you'll have to read in order to catch up.
Professor Garret is so enthusiastic about the class that it makes the students more into it too. His lectures can be long and a little dull but if you take notes & pay attention you'll get an A in the class. Book isn't neccessary if you take good notes. LOVE HIM!
Knows his info off the top of his head, plays good music in class. With that said, IT CAN BE REALLY DRY AND BORING! especially if the class is 3 hrs long! (cuts out the last 45 mins). tests are curved, no hw, just withstand the longg lecture and you'll pass for sure. curves are huge so dont worry when you see the test. oh yah, did i mention, boring
He lectures every day, but it's about music so who cares? NO homework. Only 4 tests, and the final isn't cumulative! Such an interesting class! If you go to class you won't have to read the text book. He's super SUPER easy. I love him
Super easy, just go to class, do your study guide and it is an easy A.
He's a great professor. You can tell he's legit...he lectures everyday, plays music, and he knows what he's talking about. He gives study guides for every exam, and tells you exam questions. grades on a curve. I would say it's an easy class if you go everyday and take notes.
I lovee Mr.Garrett! He amazes me til this day knowing all that info and history on music! He truely has a strong passion for music and thats why he wants to teach students to appreciate it too. The class is easy and interesting!! He plays music and lectures the whole period..so make sure youre good at taking notes. I 100% reccomend to take him!!!
Love Professor Garret!Class is fun but u have 2 pay attention. 1midterm & final about what he went over n class. Take notes! 98% is based on his class notes & he gives u hints n class on which questions will b on the test. 2 jazz concerts u must attend & write a 2 pg. paper of what u thought about it & a 2 page book report. Book is short & easy!:)
Glen Garret is a true legend at CSUN. He makes it clear from day one Music 107 will be the easiest class of your college career! Attendance is not mandatory, but go because not only will you miss out on listening to some great music, but also because his tests are lecture heavy! Even so, I highly recommend this his class, you won't regret it!!!!!!!
I agree with the comment below: Garrett is a legend. This was the easiest class of my college career. Tests are multiple choice, and every question can be found in the lecture. Great instructor. Highly recommended.
Garrett is the best, an old school teacher that doesnt let his class get sidetracked w/ meaningless discussions. He has a memory like no teacher I've ever seen.. a must take
He is the best professor I have ever had!!! this is a must take course!! he is extremely entertaining and there are only 2 midterms and a final. THAT IS IT!! no hw! no class work! no essays! just take notes because his test are all based on lecture. its the most fun ive ever had in a classroom!
I agree, Glen Garrett is a living legend. He is extremely knowledgeable of the material and will ramble on and on about it. He said it first day of class, that nothing major would be given, only for a few tests and a final. His course is only easy when you attend. I recommend attending he is very creative, fun and interesting.
Very easy. SHOW UP because tests based on lectures. 2 midterms and a final. Highly knowledgable and talks the entire time. Great teacher.
He is so cool! just don't take his class in the morning, cause sometimes you really don't have the energy to stay awake listening to him lecture. he's funny and you need to make sure you're a good note taker...and if you have a recorder, record the music he plays cause it's hard to remember or study that specifically for tests
Wow! Ok, he is awesome. It may be a Hiphop music class but it really delves into the socioeconopolitical forces that helped create it. I learned so much stuff beyond the class and I can honestly say he has contributed to my musical future. If you think you're a DJ because you have a computer this class will remind how much of a sucker DJ you are.
ya...he is pretty awesome but most importantly, he's fair to his students. 80 Q midterm/ 100 Q final/ 2 pg paper of 2 jazz concert experiences/ 2 pg book report on Jazz Anecdotes. Class meetings were originally 3 hrs but he let us out an hr early. Just take really good notes & study them for both tests..no need to buy the book. YOU HAFTA TAKE HIM!!
Garrett was pretty cool. He really knew his material that he teaches to the class. He lectures every class the whole time so it tends to be boring after awhile (especially if you have him on a morning class) Nevertheless, if you are there everyday, you'll do fine. I strongly recommend this teacher.
Really awesome guy. He loves teaching this subject and his study guide is pretty much what he asks on the test. BUY THE REQUIRED TEXT! it will help you in the end.
very easy class. go to lectures take good notes and your set! his final is the easiest final you will ever take in college i can guarantee it!!!
I loved him! He has a strong passion and love for music and its history and he just wants to share it with his students. Go to class, take good notes, read through the book..and you'll get an A! =)
Tedious classroom experience. He was not clear as to what is on the exams. Information is thrown out there in an inconcise and unclear format. In the end, he gives his students a higher grade then they actually earned. I got an A, probably deserved at best a low B, at worst a mid C. I learned early jazz is great, but later jazz is self indulgent.
Long lectures w/ a LOT of info. Must see 2 jazz shows (1 paper) & summarize the Jazz Ancedotes book (1 paper). Don't buy the text book. Study guide is just a list of 100 musicians. I got an A and didn't do or learn anything. Easy A but long and boring if your not a Jazz fan.
Best teacher so far! he knows his music history. very interesting stories and is a very easy class to take. only three test and all you need to do is get at least a c on them to pass the class. take good notes cuz he goes kinda quick. totally worth taking
the class is interesting. the prof knows his material. notetaking is a must because tests are based on notes and the reading. (i'm selling the book for a reasonable price. still new.you can reach me at [email protected])
He was a pretty cool teacher. There are 2 midterms and a final. Attendance isn'y mandatory, but all his test information comes from his lectures. So you should show up and take good notes. He is easy as long as you study for his tests and take good notes during the lectures. It is a fun class and he really knows what he is talking about.
It isn't every day you get a teacher who is as much of a true expert like Prof. Garrett. He knows everything he talks about, and he accompanies it with a good sense of humor. Great class!
took him first semester at csun. i enjoyed his class very much. hes understanding and nice. lemme remake an exam because of sickness. even though the class is long, it still is interesting. got an A but gotta work for it. no bs.
Awesome guy!Loved music before I came into this class and he made me love it ten times more. Highly recommended him!! Take notes and you will be fine! AWESOME GUY! Learned so much! Wish I could take more of his classes!
I loved him. He is so passionate about music and he knows his stuff. It was worth getting up early to go to class at 8 am on a FRIDAY! My favorite class by far. I'm taking another one of his class. I just LOVED this course
Awsome teacher...he is a jazz lover but knows alot about hip hop. Garret is a musical genius who defies the definition of a true music lover..Didnt even have to show up to class...he is easy..class can feel slow at time's but worth it
The class is alright, however...he loves to take the stage!Class consists of 2 exams(midterm and final)and a turn-in final(no exact format)and he always accepts extra credit!SO DO IT!I was pretty careless about the class and passed w/ a B!& make sure to take notess!(whatever he talks about in class is likely to be in the exam!NO BIGGIE
The whole class is on his lectures, 2 midterms, 1 final. You dont really need to read the textbook, but it helps. As long as you attend class, sit in the front and take notes then you should do fine. It is mostly memorization, but you listen and discover some awesome music!
Great class, teaches outside the box . Doesn't take roll its up to u to be there for notes. Mainly a lecture course. impossible to fail. Top 25% of scores are an A the next 15% are a B & the rest are C's. hes great.
The class was kinda boring. He plays a lot of music though, which helps class go by faster. The midterms and the final are easy if you take good notes and memorize the terms well. DON'T COME LATE TO HIS TESTS! He'll freak out on you. Overall, I thought he was just an OK professor.
Very talented guy who knows A LOT about jazz. I recommend bringing a laptop to type notes because he talks for a really long time and almost everything he says is on his exams. Just take perfect notes, pay attention to the songs he plays and you'll get an A. The only reason you need the jazz annecdotes book isbecause you need 2 write a report on it
He is an awesome professor! Very easy going and does not fail anyone. Worth taking, as long as you pay attention to the lectures. Book report and concert report, but only two pages max for both. Tests are easy, just make sure you remember the songs and people who play specific instruments. Awesome professor, worth taking. Learned a lot!
hes very easy his tests are all from his notes so if you go to class the tests will be easy
This guy is a living Music Encyclopedia. Very easy to pass the class. Just show up to class & take good notes. There are 2 midterms & 1 final. He has the best grade curves on his test so you really have to be an idiot to fail his class. Everybody gets good grades in there & I would definitely recommend him as a professor to take. Don't buy the book
Wonderful professor. Lectures off book and is very knowledgeable on the subject. Book was an easy read but not mandatory. Can't miss class b/c his lecture material is on the tests. Overall, class is easy. Hardest part about the class was that it was Friday @ 8am for almost 3 hrs.
Great guy. Fun class. And I dig his little kid chuck shoes
Amazing professor! Had him for summer school so his lectures were fast. He has a passion for jazz, he literally memorized everything on the textbook and blurts it to you in class. Easy grader, he told us the lowest grade we can ever get in his class was a C-, highly recommend
Glen's a nice guy but the lectures can drag. Grading was easy, ended up with a B with barely any effort. Don't bother buying to book
hes a really good teacher. its a drag to be in there for almost 3 hrs but he knows his stuff. i really admire him. hes one of those teachers that you just respect. his class is easy, hes passionate and has great style.
Cool guy. His exams were hard but he has a lenient grading system. I think the minimum to have an A is 80%. B is Between 79-60%. Even if you ended up with 40% on the exam that is still considered a C. He does require a bit more reading then the other professors. 2 two page papers. 1 on a book filled with short stories, another is a concert report.
The best teacher you can take for MUS306. He defiantly knows what he is talking about and is really passionate. attendance is not mandatory at all, he gives numerous extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. tests are curved like crazy. lowest grade you can get is a C. MUST TAKE!
Really cool class. You'll learn a lot about history of music. You HAVE TO go to class because all of the questions are drawn from lectures. He DOES provide a "study guide" but if you didn't take notes onthe topic when he was talking about it, you better hope one of your friends did. Internet won't really help because questions are specific.
Tests are multipul choices, mainly from his lecture. He doesn't use white board too much except writing musician's names. Easiness is depend on you. 50% of students can receive B, so easy B for sure. If you want an A, you must take very good notes. We could listen lots of music during the class. The professor was very passionate about jazz.
He is a really nice guy. It was a light course and easy. I got a B without showing up to the classes. There are 2 multiple choices midterms and a final with listening part included. I highly recommended him.
Good class, professor loves to play music. Atendance is not mandatory, doesnt take roll. But you have to take notes in order get an A on the tests or you'll get a B or a C for just going to class and taking the test. Pretty easy class.
Took his hip hop history class and it was actualyl prety cool. The material was all interesting. HE just talked though, so it was easy to fall asleep, zone out, or get on your phone. Easy A cuz hes got such a dope curve. the clas was really quiet though, not alot of energy but easy class. Definitely recommend this dude. Easy A
really passionate about jazz. If you listen to jazz and are familiar with the artists, youll get an A or B. Take good notes and listen to the music he tells you to listen to b/c it will be on the test. Class is quite boring because he talks non stop about jazz(2hr) and tells stories from the jazz anecdotes book.overall, easy class& cool cat indeed!
The fact that he is a grumpy old man should say enough. The things we learned in class were interesting, but he just talks and talks and it got kinda boring. Questions on the midterm & final come from the objective questions in the book. He curves when grading. Pretty much anything goes for the final project. He can be kinda rude sometimes.
Really down to earth guy and a fantastic teacher. I was not into jazz when I first started this class. He expanded my mind and got me into jazz and I never thought that I would. Looked forward to listening to a highly credible teacher this summer. Sometimes it is not about the grade but what you get out of the class. I am very appreciative for that
Has no organization in the class. No worksheets or studyguides throughout the course to keep us on pace with his lectures. Class is boring (esp 3 hour class) because he lectures the entire time with occassional song played. It's as if im hearing my grandpa speak to me about the past. Not very willing to help raise your grade as well.
Very hip teacher for his age. Classes are not mandatory but required because that's where all the materials on tests are from. 1 Midterm, 1 final to determine your grade..Tests are really easy. Basically come to his class, take notes, and pass. Don't bother buying the book because it will never be used. Overall, class was great.
wonderful professor.
Easy class. The professor is okay. You don't have to show up to class to pass. Only 2 midterms and a final, all multiple choice. Text book is completely unnecessary.
Hip Hop. It was a three hour class on friday afternoon, boring af until the end when you talk about tupac. The book is pretty dry too, but if you do a good project and study the questions at the end of chapters in the book youll probably get an A. If you just show up for midterm and final, turn in a project youre guaranteed at least a C.
The man is a walking encyclopedia of rock 'n' roll knowledge! Highly recommended if you like 50s-70s music or are interested in it. He goes over pre-50s music before the 1st midterm, but most of the semester is the 50s, on. Go to every class, take notes, listen to the music, and you'll do well!
Interesting class and professor! To be a 930am class it was very interesting. If you like gospel, jazz, bee-bop, oldies, motown, rock n' roll then this is the class for you. He definitely knows his music history. He plays music in class and sits on top of a table and lecture the entire time, but interesting. I got an A.
JUST TAKE HIM! Yes, his exams are not easy but he carves.Just read textbook.I got a C+ of midterm but my final grade is A-. The attendance is not mandatory but if you go to class you will learn a lot! His concert report can be both formal or informal. However, the book report is really important. I LOVE HIS CLASS!!!GO TAKE IT!!!
Its super easy, just show up and sit there.Record his lectures, its helpful when its time to study. He lectures the entire 2 hours. If you pay attention, his test are worded exactly what he lectures. He tells you what's on the test, repeatedly. Don't buy the book, it's pointless.I only hated the fact that it was 8 in the morning on a friday.
Really easy going guy. Class lectures were boring, you really have to be able to take notes as he is speaking. Try to really keep musicians and their instruments memorized and listen to the music, you should be fine. Even if you do not do goon on Midterm or Final be sure to do the book report and concert write up and you'll be able to do well.
This guy is a badass. Not mandatory to show up but you'll fail if you dont. You can use the textbook questions as a study guide to test. Did I mention hes a badass?
Prof Garrett isn't too passionate about his work and it's very apparent. It almost seems like he repeats the same thing every class session. This is one of those classes where it is very easy to fall asleep. Attendance is not mandatory but extremely recommended. If you show up at every class session and take good notes, you will do great.
great professor. two mid terms and a final all three based solely off the notes you take from the lectures. DON'T BUY THE BOOK. won't take attendance but show up at least 70% of the time and study at the least two nights before each test and you should pass the class. He knows his facts. really is a walking encyclopedia. nice man
I just finish his class. So glad its over. He's really not approachable. Never know what your grade is in the class He likes to make an example out of students so he purposely yells so everyone hears what he's saying to the students. I wish he wouldn't teach. He obviously is miserable doing it.
not the nicest guy always grumpy
He didn't use ppt to teach so you have to listen carefully to his lecture and take good notes.Recommend to memorize the musicians and what instrument they played. Try to listen to the music in the CDs again and again because there were about 10 listening questions. I am an Asian, I could get an A, you can do that too.
I loved taking this class from Professor Garrett! Even though it was an 8 am class, he made this course worth coming to. His passion for music is inspiring and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the origins of rock and roll...and a little music in class is never a bad thing! :D
Professor Glen's class can be fun or can be boring depending on your interests. He goes in great detail of Jazz history so prepare to take notes. Does not write much on the board. If you like Jazz and want to learn about it then take him. He is not an easy A, but is easy pass so if you are ok with a C- then take him. If not take another class.
If you're interested in the history of rock and roll, take this class. The lectures are long, and you have to pay attention because he rarely writes any notes on the board. Tests are based off notes you take in class, but he gives a generous curve. Although they were long, I did learn a lot from this class.
So this class is great if you really enjoy music and want to learn about Jazz history. His lectures are more him talking about the music he loves and it's not really clear what is on the test so you have to take really good notes. He curves the grade like crazy so if you get a F on a test the lowest grade you can get is a C.
Basically you listen to him talk about music and runs off into something thats not in the textbook, yet the midterm and final are about the questions in the textbook. He is passionate about his work but really boring class. Final project was pretty easy on any subtopic in Hip Hop. Curves the exams which is a stress reliever.
Great class and awesome professor. Don't buy the book, all test material is in the lecture. I recommend recording the lectures if you have a laptop, then jot down key musicians he talks about and what time it's said during the recording. When he gives you the study guide it will be a list of musicians and you can go back to your recordings.
Jazz is fascinating to me so I loved this class. About as easy as it gets. Show up and pass. Kind of a grump, but he's a cool dude who knows his stuff really well. Plays amazing music and has a real passion for the subject. highly recommend. lectures are pretty essential to getting the test material. never opened the book once.
He is rude and impatient. His lectures are all over the place. He just lectures for 2.5 hours. On the plus side... you can't fail this class. The lowest you will get no matter how badly you fail a test, is a C in the class. But you MUST write the book report. Most who failed the midterm & final got B's in the class because of the papers. nbd.
His lectures take hours but he gives away a lot of the answers to test questions he will use during them. Fill our the review questions after every chapter and you will pass. Participate in class and get crazy amount of extra credit! 1 midterm, a final paper worth 25% of final grade and a final worth 50%
Show up for the midterms with the right scantron and you will pass. Easy class, long lectures. I always left at the breaks and still managed to get B's on the midterms with little studying. Don't get the book unless you're interested in learning more. There is absolutely no way you can fail this class, the lowest grade he gives is a C.
Sometimes he can be quite the grumpy old man but you can tell he teaches not for you to learn but because he is so passionate on the subject which makes it a little better. Even if you fail a test the lowest grade he gives is a C. 2 pg book report, 2 pg concert paper and 2 exams make up your entire grade and the curve is INSANE. So easy!!!!
This class was really boring to me, It was not what i thought it would be. However, you will get a C if you do the 2 papers, his curve is great! I basically screwed up really bad on the midterm and final, and i still got a C just because of the 2 papers. You HAVE to do those papers though. You're basically guaranteed at least a C.
Ughhh!!! His class is UNBEARABLE. He is SO BORING and his attitude is REALLY GRUMPY. Obviously he is passionate about music, but he literally will prattle on until he interrupts himself with a jazz track. I have tried to listen to him and once I even caught him losing track of his OWN THOUGHT and switching mid-sentence. The whole class is dead
Lectures can drag on at times. The class is not what a lot of people expected so don't take if you expect to talk about JCole and Kanye for 2 hrs. There a midterm and final (MC). And a final paper on any topic of your choice. Doesn't like it if you comment on any info he gives. He kind of just stares at you and walks away to play music. Not nice.
The class starts off pretty slow and kinda boring, but it picks up as he progresses. Attendance is optional but HIGHLY recommended, he plays music that will be on the midterm and final exams. He is kinda rude but he keeps it real with you. Everything is pretty much straight forward. P.S ........... He has a famous curve
Class is extremely boring, didn't show up for most of it. I bombed the midterm and final, I did the two papers and got B. Be careful; he will give you a 0 if he thinks that you didn't read the book(I didn't, still passed.) Pretty rude, even if he is wrong, he will be "right." His curve is insane though.
his class is super easy but quite boring if you're not interested. 2 midterms, 1 final and that's it, nothing else. Show up on all 3, you will be guaranteed a pass! Take good notes from lecture (he tells what's on the test!), or get it from your classmate, study it according to his study guide, you will ace it.
This class is extremely easy. You don't have to go to class if you have the notes from someone from the same class, just make sure you attend all exams. He does get grumpy sometimes if you come in late. He is your caring old grandpa you love so much, who will never let you fail this class, but at the same time you hate his boring long talks.
you might feel a bit frustrated with his long lectures. but you'll definitely learn and easily pass with an A.
you will pass forsure!!! lecture is really heavy slow and mono tone, if you have no interest in jazz you will be bored, however the proffessor is really chill and you will definitely pass if you just do what he asks, which isnt much. if all you care about is passing this is your class.
Glen is the homie, I've taken his upper and lower division classes and it's ridiculously easy to pass. Lectures can be kind of a drag but the dude is super into jazz and is a great saxophonist (saw him in hermosa once!) Honestly you learn a lot of cool stuff about music too. Take MC tests and he grades on a MASSIVE curve. Def recommended!
You don't need a textbook at all. It's seriously so hard to get a bad grade in this class. Just show up, or even get someone to take notes for you on the lectures. There are 3 major tests. He curves the test so just study the day of and you should be good.
Easy A, just three assignments throughout the whole class that require studying time if you want to get a good grade on them. You can not fail this class the lowest he'll give you is a C- if you were horrible.
HE IS THE BEST! YOU WONT FAIL HIS CLASS if you will take his midterm, final and final paper. I got on my final paper C, i did not get the book and i passed his class with B. His tests are multiple choices and i just guess on everything. The lowest grade you will get in his class is C- , even if you will fail his tests. I LOVE HIM!
What a fantastic class! I love Rock and Roll but Mr. Garrett just literally blew my mind with how much info he knows about Rock and Roll and he has so many interesting stories. The class was 3 hours long, which is a drag, however I high recommend this class if you love Rock and Rock history AND an easy A!!!!
Glen 's class is absolutely hilarious. You don't even have to show up to lectures to pass! All you have to do is take the tests and even if you get every single question wrong on both you get a C- just for showing up! If you are interested in music though, come to class. He can be very slow and monotone but he knows a crap ton about music. Cool guy
You will pass this class. I had this class on a Friday 8am-10:45am and he always lets us out either at 10 or before 10. The lectures can be very dull.
Professor Garrett is a cool guy. He is very very knowledgeable about music. We always get out of class early but he does lecture nonstop while we are in class. He takes it very personally if you show up to class late or if you leave early. He will say that you don't need the book but he lectures out of it and gets upset if you haven't read.
The only real reason why this class is popular is because you can skip all lectures, bomb all the tests, and still pass the class. Avoid if you care about getting a high GPA. The class title is misleading. You don't talk about recent, modern hip-hop or rap music, and the material is dull IMO. He does get grumpy if you show up to class late.
Professor Garret is caring and wants to ensure everyone passes. He curves the tests and is not harsh on grading the final project. Aside from the lectures being heavy, he let's class out early. I do recommend reading the book, it really helped out this semester, it has sample questions of the final and midterm at the end of each chapter.
Took his class during the Winter. Like everyone else stated, you're only graded by 4 items: Book Report, Live Performance Review, Midterm, and Final (will leave the class with a C) The only book you'll need is the Jazz Anecdotes.
Low stress, chill class. His only priority is to make you like jazz. This means he doesn't fail anyone, as long as they do all assignments. How to get an A: bring a laptop and take good notes, focus HEAVILY on the Jazz Anecdotes book, and pay attention in class. WARNING: show respect for jazz or suffer his wrath
He's such a nice man and deserves more attention. He gets upset when students don't participate and gives extra credit if you do. There was a midterm and a final along with a final project that he grades easily. Focus on the book questions at the end of the chapters and you'll pass the exams with an A or B.
All you need to do in this class is take his two midterms and finals and you pass this class. The lowest grade you can get in this class is a C.
Take good notes and you should pass with an A. He knows A LOT about music. Very cool class.
Don't take if you actually care about your education. I took the 3 hour class and he often would let us out 2 hours early. No syllabus given but it doesn't matter because you can pass the class by failing all the exams. The lectures are excruitiatingly boring and he has no visual aid which doesn't help. He doesn't bring up modern hip hop at all.
He is boring!!! Ugh but hes an easy A. 2 concerts write about both in 1 assignment. 1 book report 2pgs. Midterm and final. Easy! He has a huge curve!!!! Dont need book.
Very passionate about what he speaks but his class felt so long. All he did was talk and play music. The class was an easy A!!! so worth dealing with the 2 hours of him lecturing. Didn't pay attention all I did was record his lectures wait for him to post a study guide( all on test). His test are based on the lectures so take notes or record!
easy class with only 2 papers and a midterm and final. he gives a huge curve, but lectures are very heavy because he doesnt use powerpoint or even write on the board ever, but if you want an easy A take him
Show up and pass. If you fail the class you are just lazy! He truly cares about jazz and his main concern is to make you enjoy it! He curves very generously. Two papers and a midterm and final! Very laid back class!
Professor Glen gave a huge curve after each exams. There are 2 midterms and Final. Take him if you're skilled at taking notes really fast, since there are no slides. Sometimes I recorded but it took too much time from me to rewrite everything down, so I learned how to take notes in this class. Memorization is key to getting an A in this class.
Doesnt teach actual lectures, just sits in front of class without mic and babbles on about the book. Basically we are meant to learn in this class solely from reading the textbook on our own. In class he will brush through chapters and not actually teach. Very frustrating. Also doesnt use any online grading sources like canvas, does it oldschool
This class is an easy A for the simple fact that he massively curves the exams and the lowest grade he gives is a C. So if that's what you're looking for, go for it. But personally while I don't think he's the worst professor I've ever had, I would not take him again. He doesn't really teach and he's incredibly hard to follow.
Nice guy but his class did get boring. He mentioned that no one fails a test but if u do fail, the lowest hell give is a C. There are extremely cringe moments, especially relating to hip hop.
Favorite Professor! Super sweet guy, and really interesting all around when you get to know him. He WANTS you to pass, and is very lenient about test grading. Only 2 tests and a final project the entire semester, other than that it's just class and him lecturing, but his lectures are fun, and class gets let out early. Textbook will help with exams
Before Covid-19, class seemed to be difficult. He is just talking, no presentations, need to write down infos or study from textbook. No quizzes. Attendance not mandatory. Midterm, 1 project, Final. That's it. After we went online he just sent us the Midterm and Final and gave us a week to complete. You can find everything on the internet. Easy A
Since Pandemic he cut down some assignments, but overall the class is easy the professor is one cool guy. Much respect to Glen Garrett
This class was actually The History of Rock N' Roll class. If you love oldies, rock n' roll, jazz, blues, then you would propbably enjoy this class. Professor is VERY leacture heavy! no powerpoints, doesn't use canvas, only his voice so you gotta be in class to really know whats goin on. Low grading scale and really easy to pass, pay attention!
Just know going in that his teaching style is to spend the whole class playing a ton of music for you and talking. If you know that in advance and that works for you then you will LOVE his classes. I took his Jazz & Hip Hop classes. I found it helpful to type notes as he spoke too fast to handwrite everything. Show up & you will pass. Easy & fun A!
