I took this class on a whim and it turned out to be amazing. Probably the best class I've had at Montclair. His lectures are really deep, but they don't lose you. The classes on the bible were particularly good.
a lot of reading, tests are open ended questions about three sentences a question, very tough class in general. If you keep up with the readings and come to class all the time you will do well.
HORRIBLE!! very tough, does not help you out and the class is a waste of time!and it's like your in grad school the way he teaches... he is not a good prof.
I love this class. I like how he shows that mythology is ancient and mysterious and yet relevant to modern life at the same time. The class can be difficult sometimes, but that's because he makes you think. I think the more challenging profs are the better profs.
Myth and Pop Culture = Best Class Ever!!!
STAY AWAY!!! I DON'T KNOW WHO HIRED THIS GUY??!! I was actually looking forward to this class. I now hate mythology because of him!
I loved this class. The guy below doesn't know what he is talking about. I found Gill to be interesting and helpful. I'm going to take more of his classes.
Gill's. Classes. Rule. I've taken two of his classes now and they were both great. Most literature classes focus on what happen in the stories; Gill tells you *why*. It's a whole different level.
Prof Gill is awesome! I definitely agree that his teaching style is much tougher/challenging than most others, esp. for a gen ed class, but honestly, that's what college is about, right? Go to class, keep up with the readings, and participate. You pay tuition to be challenged, not to be spoonfed information! Take Gill, you'll definitely learn w him
don't do it. trust me. you have to buy 5 books, and do responses on the readings. Attendance isn't mandatory, but good luck if you miss class. midterm was horrible. don't take it.
Dr. Gill is very passionate about what he teaches. However, if you are not as passionate about learning the subject matter, then good luck! The mid term was quite hard and the final is going to be accumulative. He is a cool guy, but do not take this class if you are looking to be laxed and get an easy A.
He's a good guy who LOVES his diet coke. There is always reading, however, most of the readings are short until you get to the Iliad and the Odyssey. If you don't do the readings, he goes over them in detail during class so just take notes. Mid-term was on things that he stressed in class. Pay attention and you'll do fine.
Celtic Mythology. Dr. Gill is an excellent professor. He is interesting and has a great deal of knowledge in the subject he teaches. The work is extremely hard and challenging, reading and writing assignments every week, field project, termpaper and final. But overall if you like mythology you will love this class, and his teaching style.
don't take this class if you are not interested in mythology. class is boring. no homework besides 12 responses on readings throughout the semester. the midterm and final are ridiculously hard and there is also a 10 page term paper.
Even though this was a very hard class, it was easily my favorite class. I recieved an A but really had to work hard for it. The key to passing is paying attention in class by reading the material given, perfect attendence, and hours of studying in the library.... very good at teaching i highly reccommend him
He is goooooddddddddddd....easyy..take him..
I love Dr. Gill's classes. I have taken him twice and both classes were great. He's always pretty fair and organized. He's the kind of prof you just want to listen to talk because everything he says is useful. Some stuff he says clicks right away, and other stuff makes sense later, but it's all good. Going to take another class with him next term.
good professor but very boring. He will call you out in class if you give him any reason to. he lectures the whole class and goes over important stuff. you have to order a set of books - 3. Never used them, you can find the stories on spark notes. He gives a midterm and a take home final and a term paper. Dont take class unless interested.
worst class ever, don't take unless interested. gives a midterm and take home final which are ridiculous and hard. his term papers don't make sense - 9pg comparative analysis.. He will call you out if you are talking to someone. very boring class lectures the whole class, never used books. don't take class, pick another gen ed.
HORRIBLE. if you have him now DROP IT. he hates girls. you have to go to class. you have to read every story and take tons of notes and you still will get no higher than a B- if you are a girl. unfair grader with no reasons behind what he gives you. BORING class and he takes it too seriously for a GENED. NEVER take him!!
IDK what these people below me are talking about. Gill is really interested in his teachings. He gets really involved and is CRYSTAL clear! Word of Advice highlight everything he says in your book and write notes on the side so u remember. His exams are based on that. He makes the course really interesting if u pay attention! Highly recommended!
Gill is one of the best professors at MSU. Most of my friends say the same. Not only was his class cool, but it actually helped me make sense of my other classes! Sure, he's serious, but do you want a joker for a prof? The critical stuff below obviously comes from people who are slackers. If you are serious about learning, take him.
Not the best. There are worse, he's nice to his students but his lectures are boring. Always fall asleep. I used to like mythology but not anymore. He gives terrible notes and gives you tons of readings. But the readings are hard to understand because they are written in old style writing. Went for extra help during office hours and he never showed
Rocks. I've taken two classes with Gill, and both were great. Looking to take a third. Few profs at MSU are as good as he is. I could see not liking his approach if you have to take his subjects, but if mythology or ancient lit is your thing, there is nobody better, because he takes you more deeply into it. And he's totally a babe, too!
HORRIBLE. If you are not interested DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He takes it WAY TOO SERIOUSLY. His lectures are SO BORING, I always fell asleep. He assigns TONS of readings that are too difficult to understand. I was a little interested in the subject before taking his class but now I hate it. He assigns a 10 page term paper and gives the WORST TOPICS
HORRIBLE! I recieved a B and a B- on the midterm and he gave me a D+ in the class! I emailed him asking why and he ignored me. Assigns way too much reading and a 10 pg paper (and even if you write the greatest paper in the history of humanities he still will give you no higher than a 80%). Unnessarily hard and ruined my interest in mythology
If you're interested in mythology you won't find anyone better. Ignore the comments below - pay attention in class, do the readings and you'll be fine (funny how everyone who said they did poorly also said they slept through class). Take Gill's classes, you won't regret it. Easily the best professor I've had so far.
If you do the readings and homework you will do well in his class!!!! Arrogant in class although very helpful one on one. He keeps the class interesting. Take his classes.
Regardless of my grade, I was friends with everyone in the class and we all hated it. He assigns extremely long and hard to understand homework assignments, gives exams w/o discussing or Preparing with the class, ignores all emails; overall, I don't recommend taking the class. I like humanities, but didn't get anything out of his class. DONT TAKE!!
I've had Professor Gill for two classes, Celtic Mythology and Tolkien Myth. Yes the readings are alot and the journals can get easily lost track of but if you are interested in off the beaten path subjects, he's the right professor. He does all he can to help out his students and always finds time to talk when needed. Highly recommened
One of the best professors I've had at MSU. Very smart and funny, really made us read into the texts, class was always enjoyable. Fair amount of writing involved, but it was an extremely interesting class. I highly recommend him :)
Gill is brilliant, seriously. He's very passionate about his work and it shows. Lots of reading and lots of writing, but class is interesting. For celtic myth we had readings and journal entries through Bb which were annoying but worth doing. He talks a lot but you should too. His final is eeeassssyyyy.
I don't know why there are so many good comments on here. I am a good student and try hard in class but Gill has canceled 8 out of 11 classes and its hard to learn w/o a teacher to explain the readings. even in the classes he held his explanations did not clarify the text.
I tried giving mythology and this professor a chance but that was a hugeee mistake. I have no clue what I am doing in this class anymore. He cancelled class more than half of the semester. (Not exaggerating). Although he posted audio lectures in place of the cancellations, if I wanted a hybrid course I would have signed up for it. UNFAIR.
Nice guy, loves what he teaches, explains everything well. Replies to emails. The midterm and test are HARD. You HAVE to read. Has Journal entries that add up and are easy if you read. 10 page term paper at the end of the semester. Only complaint is he cancelled class more than half the semester and didn't curve the midterm.
Dr. Gill is an incredible professor; the best I have had at MSU. Having had several classes with him, I know how good he usually is. The complaints below about him having to cancel some classes are unfair - I happen to know a ton of extracurricular work was suddenly dumped on him this term and he had to make it work. Normally, he's all awesomeness!
Dr. Gill is the best professor I have ever had, hands down!!! Even in grad school, not one of my professors approached his level of professionalism, dedication, and seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of the subject matter. His ability to connect meaningfully with us as students was extraordinary; he is the quintessential teacher in every sense.
I absolutely love Dr. Gill's classes; I have taken three courses of his now, and they were all wonderful. He knows and sees so much in mythology that every time he talks some incredibly wise insight rolls your way. The fact that he has a hot, sort of Russell Crowe / George Clooney vibe doesn't hurt either!
Fantastic prof!
Professor Gill rocks! Super smart, interesting, and really nice guy.
The awesomest and coolest professor at Montclair State. Brilliant, supportive, understanding. What more can you ask in a teacher? I'm going to miss his courses now that I am graduating!
I don't recommend anyone to take this professor. He is super smart, but unless you are actually into Mythology you won't understand a thing he talks about. He also canceled 8 out of 11 classes.. who does that?
Extremely knowledgeable. Knows everything there is to know about literature and mythology. Grade consists of weekly journals, discussionparticipation, and a final paper. He's funny and not boring at all in his style of teaching. His class is more of a open discussion and flys by. Very nice and helpful. Take him and you won't regret it.
Amazing lectures, but there was so much reading. Dr. Gill is high up in the University and frequently has to cancel class. He is still a great instructor.
Dr. Gill is probably the best professor I've had at MSU. He cares a lot about his students and he wants them to do well. He's incredibly intelligent and he knows a lot about what he's teaching. I learned a lot in his class; however it was no easy task. A lot of work is in store but it pays off. 1010 would recommend.
Dr. Gill is well versed in Literature, History, the Humanities, Mythology, and more. Dr. Gill is one of the most inspirational human beings I have ever met. If you are willing to read, think, attend class, and participate, then you will do wonderfully. There is a lot of reading when taking Dr. Gill's class on J.R.R. Tolkien, it is worth it.
Gill is the best professor I have ever had at Montclair State, by a long shot. His classes not only immerse you in the subject, but have relevance to all of your other classes and your life as a whole. Take anything you can from him.
I had heard great things about Dr. Gill's Tolkien class, but I didn't know if I would be into it; but it turned out to be the most uplifting intellectual experience of my life.
Great prof. Highly recommended.
Dr. Gill is all kinds of awesome. He's incredibly knowledgable about everything to do with literature and other cultures, for one thing. Also, his lectures are actually entertaining, while be deep at the same time. Best of all, he lives in our world: he's into pop culture and movies and the music we listen to. Brilliant, but down to earth.
Gill is a really great professor, and an all around nice guy, as well as knowing more about mythology and ancient cultures than just about everyone else on the planet. His lectures are great, even exciting at times, and he's very understanding of students' needs. He's also a bit of a hottie, if you like burly guys...
Outstanding prof. Makes the material interesting, and is very helpful with assignments and grading. Genuinely likes students. Would definitely take him again.
You have to love Gill. His lectures are like TED talks and he teaches the best subjects. He's also a fair grader and makes time for you outside class. Fantastic prof.
Awesome prof. Interesting classes. Fair grader. Would take again.
Gill is a great prof, and his course on JRR Tolkien is the best course available at Montclair State, period.
I can't stay enough good things about Dr. Gill. He's the best professor I have ever had. His classes are interesting from beginning to end, and he goes the extra mile for students. He actually cares about us.
Took his online mythology class and I regret it. The expectations for the class aren't difficult - weekly online journals, a term paper, and final. But he isn't helpful at all when it comes to extra help. The amount of reading he assigns is excessively long and uninteresting. The final is very difficult. If you're looking for an easy A, AVOID!
Prof. Gill is AMAZING!! I LOVED both the courses I took from him. The people that are sniping below about not being able b.s. their way to an easy A are obviously lazy and ignorant. I took Dr. Gill's Tolkien class, and it was beyond awesome: exciting, enlightening, and yet challenging. So was his classical myth class. Highly recommended!!!!
Dr. Gill is extremely rude and didn't respect my disability. His class was far too hard and he isn't kind or caring to his students. He is by far one of the worst professors I've taken at MSU and I definitely wouldn't recommend taking him.
I didn't enjoy his class one bit. Oftentimes his lectures weren't even on what we were studying. There were way too many textbooks and reading and he didn't have any idea what was too much for students. In addition to that he was not available to discuss his lectures and he wouldn't e-mail me back when I sought his advice.
Way too difficult. Only cared about a few students.
One of the most interesting Professors I have ever taken. The way he relates everything about his class to the real world and makes you think is great. It's a really lecture heavy class but his lectures are amazing and make you leave the class thinking, which I what college is supposed to do.
Gill is knowledgeable and passionate, but I wouldn't take him again. His grading system is wack. Participation is essentially the largest component of your grade. Most of the semester is focused on reading the bible. Reading responses are graded out of 3, and he never gives the full 3. If you like discussing myth and the bible, go for it.
I know there's a lot of good reviews on this man but I am strongly against this class. The readings are so long and confusing and he's not exactly easy to talk to. He is definitely passionate about the subject but clearly does not understand that it does not come as easily to others as it does to him. I have yet to learn anything from him.
Very smart and passionate person. He helped me fall in love with mythology, and willingly want to learn about more mythologies as time goes on. I am excited to take him again
Surprised to see good reviews. He is very passionate about what he does, yes and he explains things well but sometimes a little condescending. He expects the journals to be on his opinions which I thought journals were supposed to be about our thoughts and our take on the readings. For a humanities major he's okay but for others, take someone else.
Professor Gill is very passionate about the humanities, but he views his own opinion as fact. Our journals were harshly reviewed for an assignment with almost no direction at all. Feedback is based on opinions and less about content, and the assigned readings are dense and can take hours to get through.
He is very lecture-heavy. You read some myths and he lectures them. He explains them well and really gets you thinking. There are journal entries for the different types of myths and a 10pg paper at the end. He curses a lot and talks about sex a lot, which took a little to get used to.
Reading every week, and a writing assignment pretty much every week too. Very tough grader, so you'll never get a 100. He lectures on readings then you discuss them, but he has strong opinions and sees them as fact. However, he is very knowledgeable, cares about students, and likes hearing what you have to say. I wouldn't take him again.
Overall the lectures are interesting because he gets alittle sexual about his topics and curses. But he is an awful professor. there are about 5 journals GRADED SO HARSHLY. Youll never get a 6/6 on them no matter how hard you try. Get ready to read for hours. Always requires you to get over 8-10 books. Dont. Also doesnt answer emails. Goodluck!
Dr. Gill is caring & does teach you all about the Bible and mythology. However, there is so much reading for this class that I stopped halfway and started sparknoting everything. 12 journal entries (don't ever expect a 3), a 10-page research paper, and a final. My advice: read sparknotes, talk a lot in class, and do your journal entries.
He was a fine professor but most times it was hard to follow along in the lectures. He assigned journals and gave feedback for the first one, but after that, he gave up. Don't be surprised when you get a low grade and no commentary. Tells students different things so no one ever knew what was expected of us. Choose a different professor if possible
he was a good person and was very caring but he did assign way too much readings and we had to do these weekly journals that he expected a lot from. he would sometimes not give us a prompt and that would make the journals 10x harder. what we learned in class was interesting but it was a lot of class discussion
He speaks to the class as if the entire class has already taken Mythology and knows what he is talking about. He speaks in such a sophisticated manner and almost has a big ego and is so proud of himself to know this information that the class isn't about teaching, but to brag about the knowledge he has. I haven't learned one thing this Sem
He talks about different topics in one lecture, and it's hard to keep up so make sure you take notes. Most of the books you need to read provides them or you can just search them up. It's A LOT OF READING but that's expected from a mythology class. Don't take this class if you don't like heavy reading, but regardless he's pretty average.
Dr. Gill really knows what he is talking about and is passionate about teaching about it. He does a good job of connecting these ancient stories to modern life and explaining why what he's teaching is important. He is a tough grader so if you're just looking for an easy class, I would avoid this one. If you want to learn however definitely take him
This is a good class to take if you love to read. He gives assigns a journal entry for most of our readings (write a page reflection on what we read), but other than that there was no hw. The end of the semester gets stressful because there is a 2500 word (about 10 pages) term paper & a final exam. However, he is amazing! On of my favs for sure.
Prof gill is interesting and funny. However, if you're looking for an easy A, this is definitely not it. The class is a seminar so you have to participate every class which isn't bad but it's hard to keep up with. If you think you can get away with just participating every other class, think again
Sad that it's over! I felt this class was easy bc I love to read, analyze, discuss, and write. That is what this class is all about. I naturally participated a lot. I enjoyed the reading and writing assignments. Even if you don't like that stuff, the lectures are so interesting and Dr. Gill is a great speaker. He genuinely cares. Which is rare.
Not great. It was difficult to understand his lectures. He does not post notes or slides on canvas, so if you miss class, you'll be even more lost. His expectations for assignments are always unclear, and he does not give much advice for improvement. Lots of reading, and lots of textbooks. A nice guy, but def take a different professor if you can.
Dr. Gill was a great professor but definitely be prepared to work for your grade. Very kind guy but I never got more than a 2.8/3 on any assignment. There's one exam at the end of the semester, lots of reading. Every class we had readings due but his lectures were extremely engaging and enlightening. great guy
Unless you are an expert in mythology I wouldn't recommend taking this class. You are made to feel like you should understand things immediately, and like what he is teaching is just common sense. He is a very tough grader who doesn't give clear directions or feedback. He writes all the notes on a chalkboard, which is often not legible.
Funny professor but has way too high expectations for your papers.
Dont take class unless youre a professional mythologist. Great professor but its not something for undergrad. Get ready to read 100+ pages weekly. Wayyy to much for a freshmen or even sophomore. Writing expectations are unclear and tough grader. Very unenjoyable class. Several other professors teach the same course in an easier manner
For a GenEd class, he does way too much. He refuses to reply to any emails (I asked him the same thing I put in my email in and he said "oh yeah i saw your email"), does not pay attention to Canvas comments, egotistical, and assigns a 10 page term paper (GenEd btw!!). Way too much effort for a class that has nothing to do with my major.
I am certain he must be the hardest professor to have for mythology at MSU, take someone else who teaches it. He was not too bad; was funny, the course was def harder than I thought. Readings for every class. 5 journals (eh) gave 1 quiz to scare us on like 3rd class. And a 10 page term paper (hard) We had a short answer Final exam in person (easy).
I actually really enjoyed his class. He makes the stories super interesting and fascinating. If you don't care for mythology then I don't recommend taking him because he is a kind of difficult grader and you'll prob get bored. I really loved his class, hes really nice and funny. Theres 5 in person journal assignments and 1 term paper at the end.
I am typically a straight A student. This course, I obtained a B. The professor is funny-ish, however he can be “rude” in a way. Doesn't take attendance, but it matters. Only assignments are journal entries, random quizzes based on the first 5 mins (way of attendance) & term paper. All are graded heavily. Don't take unless necessary.
Dr. Gill is very knowledgable and is one of the best lecturers here, he is fun to talk to. However, he will never give you a 100 on an assignment. He'll comment on your paper saying its great work, but will give you a 39.2 instead of a 40. He also takes it as a personal offense when you're late or skip class. He can be a little rude sometimes.
