He wears the same shirt and black jeans everyday
prepares you well for future math courses
He is the sweetest & dorkiest guy - not a hard grader, very easy-going & helps!
I've never worked harder for a grade...he's wonderful and entertaining
MA123 final worth 65% of grade...have a bad day, and you're in trouble.

Great guy once you get to know him. Will answer any question.

If you take this course, youd better like reading math books and doing proofs.
Very hard class. Not a bad guy, but he needs to be gagged and locked up.
Many people hate on Hall, but he's seriously one of my favorite teachers.

Great, amazing, brilliant man! Patient and smart.

An incredibly useless and difficult course, but he grades very easily. The curve is humongous.
Quite possible the smartest men on the planet... but a HORRIBLE teacher. The tests are hard and the problem sets make no sense. Don't take this class unless you absolutely LOVE math.
A calc review course whose first half mysteriously resides in the world of number theories. An excellent introduction to what college mathematics entails
Lectures were pretty confusing and sometimes boring, but as math classes go, I liked this one a lot.
He is really hard and not very interesting
The best Professor ever! He is very helpful and actually makes a subject like differential equations interesting. But a very tough grader out of a 100 or more people, there were about 5 A's.
this class & this professor made me hate calc
interesting, smart guy. very hard grader. tests are hard.midterm#1 median was a 20. if you work hard, you can manage. i like his class because its a worthy challenge.
He's the best math prof i've ever had. Very smart, humorous guy. Made subject very interesting, lots of real life examples. Cuz he's smart, he's challenging. If you take Differential Equation, take him.
Though he knows what he's talking about, nobody else does. He's an insanely hard grader and if you don't write things out just the way he likes, he marks you down a lot. Who ever heard of answering math equations in sentences and paragraphs?
knows what hes talkin about...no one else does...
professeur hall is an amazing math teacher for ma226. i highly recommend him if you want a challenging and insightful class about differential equations. hes a very witty and funny teacher if you enjoy science and engineering jokes. overall, amazing.
I have to say, professor Hall is GOD!! what an amazing man! He is a genius, he might not explain very well, but if you do the homework ahead of time, then lectures will make complete sense. His lectures are funny, but yeah, his exams are outrageously hard
Very smart, but not a good teacher. teaches faster than anyone in the class can follow He'll assign 20 HW questions, then grade 3 really harshly, and the other 17 questions aren't even looked at. tests are hard, makes review of calc 1 harder than MA123
A good teacher. I thought he explained things well. Tests are long and hard but do-able if you study.
He's a cool. Test are hard, but it out of 130+ point so if you study hard, you can do well. Mathlabs are a killer but really help you understand the material and it realli helps on test.
He actually makes differential equations pretty interesting by providing real life applications so you have some clue about why you have to learn it. He's a good chap.
This is the first math course that I have enjoyed. Hall is an insanely hard grader, but his lectures are very interesting and the course workload is fair. You may not help your GPA by taking his class, but you will definately learn more.
Entering Honors Freshman, this is college math. If enrolled for div req, drop immediately. take some other honors class. If you love math, couldn't possibly rec a better intro class. key: go to lecture, spend a good amount of time thinking and learning.
A very strange guy, but that everything more interesting (for example, his e-mail/alter ego is a TV detective's name). Really knows what he's talking about, which can be overwhelming. Definitely requires a lot of work to get any good grades.
An awsome teacher. Not only does he speak English, but he's written a textbook, so you know he speaks English *fluently.* His goal is to help you understand; a great lecturer, if you're in a small class - could be hopeless in a lecture hall.
He goes really quickly. don't take this class unless you've taken the AP BC exam. I took AB and figured a review of calc 1 + the calc 2 i hadn't seen yet would be a good solid class for me. wrong. it was really difficult. but he is so nice in office hours
Hall is a really great professor. He knows his stuff; he's very approachable, and he always encourages questions. However, the tests are ridiculously hard and probably won't reflect what you've learned.
very good
Definitely take a calc class with prof Hall. He is smart and interesting. Tests can be tough, but don't hesitate to go to office hours regularly-this will help. He really tries to challenge his students, but you'll learn, and respect him because of it.
A very intelligent man who knows his material. He can go very quickly in his notes, so you may have to go back over them after class to fully comprehend what was covered. Very approachable and helpful outside of class. One of the hardest classes I've take
Great teacher... even has a sense of humor. i definitely learned a lot from his class even though it was one of the hardest classes i have taken. he's quite challenging but fair. definitely worth taking if you're willing to work.
brilliant man. entertaining lecturer. very hard exams. but its hard on everyone so the curve is ok. you can still do well. i found it hard to get help outside of class but the math tutorial room came in handy. thank you grad students! take him, hes good.
brilliany man, diffulct tests, worth the work, just dfo i1!
HE IS BRILLIANT, AND HARD...BUT U HAVE TO TAKE HIM...
Good prof, as interesting as calc review could have been. Very intense, very difficult, even after AP, but I feel like I got a lot from the class; very good prep for further work in math.
Wow, what a terrible prof and class...if you don't have to take this, don't. take Calc 2 instead because this class is a giant ball of stress. I did relatively well in the class, so I'm not just some angry loser he failed...I got a B+, and it was probably the worst class I've ever taken. He sucks. More focused on jokes than teaching.
A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. Bores the hell out of you so you don't care to pay attention in class. His grading is bit too tough and he's really stubborn. Avoid him, take Blanchard or Van Baleen for Diff Eq.
He's not the best at explaining procedural techniques, but he makes up with that in giving the right perspective of diff eq's. I left the class with a SOLID knowledge of the material. He's hard and forces you to be efficient in analyzing diff eq's, but if you do the work, you won't regret it. Course with Hall is highly recommended.
had him for calc 2. in my opinion he was a great professor. explained concepts thoroughly and wrote literally everything on the board. tests are moderately hard and he doesn't expect you to finish them. grading policy is neat- he looks at the test after he makes it and decides what a good grade would be- that's an a. can be skipped if you want.
Funny guy..interesting character, sort of "kooky," fun to learn from. Material is very challenging, so even though it isn't required, try to go to every class because if you miss only one you'll be very behind. Overall good semester-loves people who talk in class/ask questions. Very smart man, respectable.
Professor Hall was by far my favorite professor this semester. He was enthusiastic about the material, funny, and intelligent. He was one of the most helpful teachers I have ever had, especially at office hours. He's a tough and fair grader, something hard to come by these days. I strongly recommend taking a class with Professor Hall.
Never collected homeworks, just group quizzes. He made lectures amusing, wasn't very dull. Tests and Final were incredibly challenging. He let us use our final grade as our grade for the entire class.
His course was my favorite last semester. I was a freshman with AP credit for the AB course and I was continuing to finish my math requirements. He explained very well and was very entertaining. Always open to help. Even though I got below a 30 on the 2nd midterm he told me I could still do well in the course and I did! a B-! Ask questions in class
Crazy, over the top, passionate about math. Tests are exactly what he focuses on in lecture. No surprises. Go to class and take notes. Best class I had that semester.
He's got a cutting sense of humor and an obvious passion for mathematics. I had credit for calc I & II so I took 127 as a refresher, and I understand the concepts much better than I would have, had I gone straight to 225.
He's my favorite professor, ever. Clever, helpful, clear. Odd sense of humor. Textbook is great. Read it. Class is fun, and helpful. Exams are straight, nothing weird.
Brilliant Professor, Although if you haven't taken Calc 2, I don't recommend this class I had to withdraw because it was pretty much a review of calc2, a class I hadn't taken. If you can take calc2, material is very complex if you are new to it.
Great guy. He's a good professor and obviously passionate about his subject. I took this class as a refresher and I feel I learned a lot. He really tries to make you understand the principal bhind the steps. He's ready to start over explaining if someone doesnt understand and answer the stupidest questions but its not easy to get an A in this class.
Professor Hall is an awesome teacher, very funny and entertaining. I did not take Calc2, so I had to work a little harder than others, but its definitely doable. He explains things on a deeper level than the other math teachers I have had. The tests are very long, and you really have to know everything to do well. Not easy, but you learn to tons!
Do not take this class if you took AB Calc. Its basically a review of calc2, so if you never learned calc2 then the class moves very quickly and is quite difficult. Prof Hall is very entertaining and seems like he genuinely loves teaching math.
He was a good teacher but he really only knew HIS material rather than being able to help in discussion about what the other professors taught. However, he did give answers to his homework in class before it was due. Just ask lots of questions. Quizzes were never too hard.
Absolutely awesome. Clearly has been teaching math for a while. Loves what he does. Great professor. I reccomend taking anything this guy teaches, best professor I have EVER had.
Professor Hall is a very helpful and enthusiastic professor, one can benefit greatly from taking a class with him. He is always ready to explain and engage students. There should be more professors like this man.
I love math, and i think that Glen Hall is the type of professor who really teaches concepts and not just how to answer numerical questions. MA127 is a more conceptual class though. He explains very well in office hours. Must go to lecture. Must study hard for A.
He explains materials clearly. he is very patient, friendly, definitely wanna take his course again
Prof. Hall is pretty cool. I have zero desire to ever learn math, but somehow his lectures are the most interesting class I have. He explains things well, his exams are fair, and as long as you do the homework and study, this class is pretty easy. I would definitely take more classes with him if I could.
hall clearly loves math, and hes SO enthusiastic. at the end of the day though, enthusiastic or not, the material he's teaching is DIFFICULT. if youve taken calc already, youll be fine in this class. if you havent (like me), itll be really tough, youll study for hours, get a tutor, and STILL get 70s on exams.
Very hardcore intensive course. Great devotion in Math. Never say you hate Math in front of him, a guaranteed Fail. He recognizes face very well, and very patient and super conceptual. No curves, allows a finite numbers of A, A-... BEWARE: TESTS ARE ~45% CONCEPTUAL, AND PRBLY NEED TO PROVE OR EXPLAIN IN WORDS DURING TESTS!
An extremely complicated class that made me resent math even more than I already did. Hall is a nice guy who can keep up a good lecture, but the class itself is complex and difficult. Things are heavily curved only because nobody does well. (on a 90 point test, 60 points was an A) Avoid the class if you can!
I came into the class having already taking BC Calc in high school but trust me, this is not like high school. You will not be memorizing equations and plugging in values. If you want to truly learn math and understand calculus on a deeper level, this class is for you. His tests are quite challenging but fair, but the average will be scaled to B.
Great professor, and also easier than other professors teaching the class (eg Devaney.) Explains well and likes to make occasional jokes. Didn't give us as many labs as the other class sections. Sometimes grades harshly on tests, but when this happens he curves well. There is collected homework, unlike the other profs. Textbook only used for HW.
Professor Hall's lectures are entertaining, and somewhat useful. However his testing and grading methods are redicoukously difficult
Good prof. He explains things well and lectures are easy to follow. Tests are not that hard for 123.
This class was nearly impossible, all COM students should avoid. Though he has an excitement for the material, he has a hard time getting it out of anyone else and the homework and tests are nearly impossible. Seriously, don't take this class.
Prof. Hall is one of the best Math professors in BU. His examples are very clear, he makes funny jokes in the class and he is also very helpful in office hours.
Calc 1 is generally a pretty easy course. Hall explains the topic perfectly and he is kind of funny in his own weird way.
Exams are impossible to finish. Reads off power point but homework and tests are 20x as difficult. If you want to fulfill a math requirement, take MA113.
"It's not really math," my advisor said. "You'll do great," she said. "We always recommend it to humanities people," she said. LIES. The class is impossible. Lectures do not translate to homework or exams. Hall is soso patronizing and, well, hokey. He looks down on people who don't have any interest in math and isn't afraid to show it.
Worst prof ever ever and ever!!!!
he thought he is very funny, but the truth is not what he thought at all! Not a that hard course, but hall explains the concept really bad! worst math course id ever take
He definitely knows his stuff, and I do like his passion for the subject. His test are difficult and he can be a harsh grader, but if you put in the effort and do what he wants, you will be fine. But sometimes I do feel like his lectures don't help.
Really really bad professor! Dont take glen halll's MA 226 if you dont have to.
LOVED taking Honors Differential Equations with Dr. Hall. The guy knows everything, and he's hilarious. He assigns hw problems due for every class and spends the lectures applying the readings to real situations. Incredibly interesting. And a good curve too. I really wish I could take this class with him again.
I loved Professor Hall as a person but his class was super hard. I got a 44% on the first midterm and I literally studied all week (good thing it was curved about 30 points up). This class takes up a lot of your time and I would recommend going over rudimentary skills before going to the lectures. When in doubt, stare at his calves.. their amazing.
I was kidding myself because I decided to take MA109 with Professor. Hall. I respect his passion for mathematics, and the difference he frequently talks about between mathematicians and statisticians but I don's think his passion is helpful to his students. If you want to ruin your transfer, you should do the same as I did.
Prof. Hall is a very funny person. Unfortunately, his lectures are hard to understand and exams are rough. I got 70s on all three exams. That being said, final grades are curved (I got an A-). Online homework and discussion quizzes are easy. The TAs were very involved and Hall always has too many people at his office hours (make an appointment)!
I had him for Calculus II at 8AM, so I rarely went to lectures. However, the MA124 curriculum is synchronized across all three professors, so you really only need to do the online hw and show up to discussion quizzes. Very helpful in office hours.
Extremely tough grader. Have a quiz per week, which is torturing. Arrogant. Do not care students' feelings.
I took the 8AM lecture which I never recommend in general. The attendance got so low that he would assign quizzes based on a random thing from the last lecture. He's obviously a funny guy, but I just wish he was more engaging. I often felt like I was behind especially during discussion when talking to people in Panth's lecture.
The content of the class was hard and the homeworks were pretty tough, but prof Hall is amazing and always ready to help. Lectures are interesting and go by quick. Worth the work.
Hall is a funny guy; unfortunately the humor is not enough to redeem the boring lectures. The course is synchronized across all sections, and I often felt the students in other lectures were better prepared. Discussion section was effectively mandatory, but a waste of time as the TA was exceptionally unhelpful. The exams are tough, study hard!
The material could be so straightforward, but Hall has a way of making it way more complicated and obscure. This was my least favorite class. If you are a COM major, take elementary statistics instead of MA/CS109.
Professor Hall is funny and truly invested in your learning and his office hours are incredibly helpful! Kept people awake during 8 am lectures and simplified the material to a level that it could be understood relatively easily and, although the exams didn't all go perfectly, I learned calculus well from him and I would take him again. TAKE HALL!
He is super enthusiastic about math and if you listen well you will do well in the class. He cares about students succeeding and if you meet his level of commitment you will succeed.
Hall is a pretty straightforward professor. He can sometimes go off on tangents, but that's just part of the fun. Differential equations are difficult to get used to, but Hall definitely helped and he's often free for office hours. I'm planning on taking his MA573 class, partly because I enjoyed his lectures.
Prof. Hall is a hilarious professor and he really likes what he does. Attendance is not mandatory but going to class is really helpful if you don't understand a concept. He goes over a lot of problems in class that help with studying for exams and homework. Overall he's a caring dude and will help you if you need help outside of class.
He was good at explaining concepts, nothing extraordinary, but it is calculus. He managed to keep lectures interesting and engaging, which is all one can ask from a 100+ person math class.
Great at explaining concepts and actually knows how to teach. No BS in his classes and very tidy notes. Always satisfying to watch him write on the blackboard because literally everything is there. Makes math interesting and actually helps you if you go to his office hours. Quirky dude, can't ask for more for a hard math class.
Ok so here is the deal. From what Ive looked at based on other ratings and my personal experience, Hall isn't' a bad professor, he's just bad at teaching MA109. The homework is based on accuracy not completion and the midterm is 40 % and final is 50 %. Good luck and study hard because he somehow makes things so complicated.
EXTREMELY HARD CLASS EVER the exam will ask you to write not only answer but sentences of your justification. And if you misrepresent even single word or number, you will get deducted. Even though you review every materials, you cannot be sure you will do a good job on exam. Remember, this class is different from general math as you might expect.
Hall is absolutely insane. He tells incredible stories and jokes and delivers lively lectures. In addition, he's very good at making students understand concepts when they ask questions. His tests are pretty difficult but he curves them well I'm pretty sure. Would definitely recommend Hall if you want a good understanding of differential equations.
Quirky and gives clear notes
hilarious + goes on lots of little tangents and side stories. steps through each part of an example problem, but tends to go WAY quicker than you can listen + write. extremely talented at mathematics, so he will always have an answer when you need it. weekly bookwork. make friends in lecture to get notes if you miss. grades are only hw + tests.
The goofiest man on the entire planet, guaranteed to wear the same North Face vest every day. Entertaining yet confusing lectures lead to needing to find resources outside of class to learn the materials. Learn on your own, do the homework, take the exams, no need to go to lecture.
Hall's lectures were fun and interesting. I managed to pick up the core concepts of Linear Algebra fairly well, even if his lectures do drag on sometimes. Read the book, participate, and do the homework.
He is extremely strict about his ideas on how things should be. If you want to get full graders on questions you need to follow his exact methods and style. Another big problem is he uses his own book rather than the common books. His book is full of paragraphs with horrible explanations and lacking example questions. Not recommended at all.
Only wish I'd dropped this class
Prof. Hall really makes sure the class understands the difficult concepts that come with differential equations. Not to mention, he's a funny guy - never a dull moment. His exams are worth like 90% of your grade, so make sure you do the practice problems he provides
Hall is a great lecturer and explains concepts at levels of difficulty and rigor that cater to most students. His differential equations course was graded 85% on tests, but he would often give us a really good idea of what would be on the test in lectures. He also wrote the textbook he uses, so review is really easy, and the textbook is used for hw
Hall is fine I guess, like if you show up and do the hw you'll get a good grade. He's just such a freaking boomer it's so annoying. Like he brags about "oh I don't have a cell phone what's wi-fi hurr durr." He's like that "old man yells at cloud" meme. Grouchy hw policy too (which you have to turn in in-class, which sucks), and bad sense of humor.
Great professor. Could've been better if exams were easier
Hall would be a good professor if he did more than read his textbook to the class. He wrote his textbook more like a novel, and it's very confusing, along which his notes, which are often just word for word from the textbook. He could teach a little more for the amount of homework he assigns at the end of the semester.
I learned mostly from the textbook. Other people say it's confusing, but I think it has a good flow with some dry wit here and there. Lectures tend to be on applications of concepts rather than on the concepts themselves, so learn them on your own and ask when you get stuck. Grades homework easy. Exams are take home, but set aside a lot of time.
Prof Hall is an extremely knowledgeable guy. Very approachable and humble. The homework is right out of the textbook, but the tests are definitely a better reflection of the lectures than the homework. He's a cool dude overall and does lots of examples.
COVID year-online only. Open note test avg of 62% which tells you evrything. His explanations were confusing/unrelated to tests or hw. Weekly hw were ok, but the test was completely different & hw only have completion grades, no feedback. He has bad handwriting & wrote the convoluted, unhelpful txtbook. No support in this class, I wish I dropped it
Good professor. Just sometimes was a bit confusing about assignments.
If you want to get a high grade, definitely don't take his course. Online course and open book test but all the test are extremely unclear. He let you "say all you can about this equation" and everything he could think about is not in your answer will get your point off. Every little mistake will be a huge deduction in grades. DON'T Take HIS MA226!
Take his differential equations class!! It's difficult, but this professor gives great explanations in lectures, during office hours, and in his book (which is different, but very useful IMO). Look at his website to see his criteria for turning in HW. You'll do a lot of work + go through many sheets of paper, but you'll learn A LOT of amazing math!
Personally, I do not like math. But Prof. Hall really encouraged us to build connections with our peers. The very first thing he asked to do was to get to know ten students in the class. I met my study mate this way, and later on , she proved to be the most helpful for this class. I recommend using the app Meechu for peer communication.
MA230 is the most difficult class I take so far because the Professor Hall explains concepts in the textbook from an absolutely distinctive and challenging angle. The tests are 200% harder than the homework. If you take his class, I definitely assume you must be a math lunatic. I was lucky on the final, but I didn't dare to try his class again.
Professor Hall teaches calculus with a lot of enthusiasm. You may not like it, but you can tell he genuinely enjoys his profession. He even lets you know midterm questions in advance, AND how to solve them. It is a hard course yes, but at Professor Hall made it bearable.
Prof. Hall was a very interesting dude. He was fun, often funny, and also very smart and articulate. His lectures were something I looked forward to. But with many Calc courses, the material is often best learned through actual examples, while his lectures were mainly explanations of concepts, which for me didn't really help. Great person though.
Homeworks are extremely long and professor Hall grades mercilessly. He's retiring now but despite being a tough professor, he taught pretty well.
