Awesome teacher!! great way of thinking!
Makes History unenjoyable. Doesn't have an effective teaching style. You will have to write alot!
Worst professor I've ever had. Discussion day is on Friday's. Which means that he goes around the room making fun of people. Calls you out. Test and papers are extremely hard!!! Get out of his class!!!
He is definately a prof that thinks outside the box. Once you get his teaching style (or lack thereof) down, you'll be fine. Participate in the discussions and follow directions on the papers. And if your papers are one line short, you'll fail the paper
Dr. Harris is a good guy. Sometimes he is unorganized, but go by and see him if you need help. He does call you out on discussions...but that is not always a bad thing.
He is on a mission to change the world. He failed a paper because it was literally 2 sentences less than the requirement!! I tried to be an active speaker in the discussions, but he always made me feel stupid for stating my opinion.
Dr. Harris is a very cool prof. He is very helpful. Class is challenging, but follow directions and you'll make good grades. It is a lot of writing, but it will defitnaly prepare you for the future. Class discussions are not hard, just say SOMETHING.
all you do in this class is write papers. his style of lecturing is very hard to follow. i struggled in this class and wish that i had dropped it
Prof harris is great! if you like to learn and want to be pushed then take him... dont take him if your just looking for the easy A cause he wont give it to you for nothing
Very strict, but intelligent professor. However, the discussions on Fridays are his way of calling you out. Participate in each Fri and do the papers. Tests are graded more fairly. Just read the books and you will be fine. He has favorites in his classes.
Dr. Harris is a very educated man and wants everyone to learn in his class. He is very intimidating esp. with his Friday discussions. You have to say something or you will get called out! He does have his favorites! Not very appoarchable
I absolutely loved this class and Dr. Harris. He is one of the best professors I have had. He makes you want to work and do well. Fridays are discussion days and if you know what you are talking about it is really fun.
You will work, but you will learn. I enjoyed his class.
Dr. Harris is one of the best teachers on the UNCW campus, like everyone says he is very smart but all you have to do is do you work and show up to class. He grades the papers fair, if you make good points you will get a good grade. I would take him over again.
Professor Harris is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He is incredibly intelligent and inspires some of his students to actually study for more than a simple grade. He does not care about grades, he cares about learning. Not for slackers or disrespectful students.
Dr. Harris is an intelligent man, furthermore he is really concerned with educating his students. He expects you to develop your own opinions and encourages you to do so in papers, discussions, and tests. It is important that you attend class and participate in discussions and you will do well.
AWESOME TEACHER...if you like a little challenge
Good teacher, a little tough, but do the work and you will fine. Very smooth story teller.
Very intimidating and unapproachable in class. He WILL call you out in front of the entire class. He does, however, have a want for his students to learn.
Very difficult to approach and intimidating. Very intillectual and if you're not, well... he'll call you out for it. If you're not oppinionated, don't take his class.
Dr. Harris is awesome. He wants his students to learn, and he is big on his students interacting and contributing to class. If your someone who doesnt like to talk, or speak your mind even if your not sure if your right or not... this isnt for you
He's a cool guy, but I cannot follow his class!
Dr. Harris is an awesome guy, but a tough teacher to follow at times. I know everyone has watched SNL's "The Lady's Man" ... okay, THAT IS Dr. Harris. He talks just like him- so he is quite exciting to watch, which makes class easy to pay attention to, and I have ADD like crazy. If you keep up with the readings and talk to him, you'll be fine.
His TA grades hard but other then that he really isnt that bad. You learn a lot of interesting this in that class...and yes he will come on you in class even if you dont raise your hand but u can say anything and hell expect your answer....DR Harris is a cool guy....
He's an intellectual who likes the class to think so. He will pause in order to find the perfect word. Very condescending and when he asks questions, be it on an essay or during class, it is difficult to figure out what he is actually asking because he will not use plain English. BTW every essay question has been stolen from a website but no ans.
He is a very nice guy, but his class is hard to follow. He has great passion for history, but the style he teaches (Ideology of America) makes the class hard. Do not be scared of him if you were to take this class. He comes across as a hard a--.
Harris is a really nice guy but taking 3-4 pages of notes wasnt really fun. Discussions every Fri that you have to participate in. His TA graded all of our papers and graded them as hard as possible. I thought I was going to fail the class. If you bust your ass you can probably get a B but it didn't seem like anyone would get an A
He is an awesome history teacher! First paper the TA grades very hard, then it's fine. It wasn't exactly the easiest class ever, but you will learn so much! It really did change my percpective of everything. I loved the class. Try to get Dr. Harris!
Really intimidating. First paper is graded tough but they get better as the class goes on. Study for tests.
He was very intimidating at first, but very nice. Awesome teacher, very educated. Take him if you want to learn a lot and challenge your mind. Hard work, but worth it.
Horrible! Clarified assignments the week they were due. Class was ridiculous and a waste of time. You have to go though. Major paper was due, and he posted the essay online the day before Thanksgiving Break. HE SUCKS. DO NOT TAKE HIM
almost impossible to receive better than a B
He is very difficult but it is extremely worth it. Don't take him if you don't care about the class, but if you really care about history he is your guy. He was awesome.
scary at first, no paper. 6 grades in all (papers). will call you out, cool guy outside of class. his TA suck
VERY interesting! His class is difficult but in the end he will help you out. If you have any questions just see him after class. Very cool guy once you get to know him. He does like to scare you on the first day. Just go to every class and take good notes because he moves fast. Your only grades are writing assignments. One of my favorite teachers!
One of the rudeset professors on campus. Has no respect for students. Avoid his classes at all cost.
he is an awesome teacher. yeah he's hard but its worth it. u have pappers which are based on answers straight from the textbook. he will PUT U ON THE SPOT in class..jus b ready to answer. he can be rude but he onli means it for your good. dont take this class if ur not serious. he's one of the best teacher's i've had. u'll lov him
This is a very hard class. I expected historical dates, events, wars... but it was NOT that. The class is only philisophical things. All ideals of Americans and religious aspects. Very hard to comprehend. All grades are papers and midterm/final exam. The TA's grade the papers. I would not reccommend Harris.
Dr. Harris is a very pulled together man, he knows how to get through life, and he'll fill you in on some of his tips. The class, however, is difficult, I don't understand the lectures, nor the readings. I usually like history, but i had poor American history classes in high school which I think are making this class much more difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HARRIS' CLASSES. He acts as though he's superior to his students and doesn't see anything wrong with it. He's rude and self-centered.
Dr. Harris is an AMAZING Prof. The people who talk smack about him are just lazy and used to squeaking by. However, do not take this class if you are looking to just get by and fill a requirement. YOU WILL LEARN HISTORY. You take tons of notes and work hard, but it WILL PAY OFF! Great class for "college."
Do not take this class! If you are looking to just fulfill a basic study and have no interest in history, this class is a bad idea. I loved history before this class, and now I don't want to hear anything about it. Be prepared to read a lot if you want an A. Also, he skipped right over the Civil War, so don't expect to learn ANYTHING interesting.
This class is NOT about memorizing dates and events. He requires you to think. He is a pretty intimidating guy and WILL call you out. Grades pretty difficulty. Do not take this class if you do not LOVE history.
He is the type that you have to get to know him to like him. He is the the teacher that affected me the most out of all of my other teachers. Take him over the summer He is awesome. he want to affect everyone of his students not just preach to the crowd and leave. AWESOME TEACHER
Very hard to get an A in this class. Be prepared to participate in class, and he loves putting people on the spot
His class is very intimidating at first. I hate history but I really enjoyed this course. I suggest scheduling a meeting with him if you feel youre struggling. He's very understanding and will definitely help you out. He sometimes spends first part of class on a discussion question and then flies through the lecture but you get used to it.
Professor is easy going. Very interesting class. The teacher moves very quickly. The work was somewhat hard. Remember to ask him for study guides.
By far the most amazing professor I have ever had. You can tell he really enjoys watching you learn and grow throughout the semester. You have to work hard and be able to interact without hesitation. At first glance class is very intimidating, but if you put yourself out there you will learn a great deal. I have taken three of his classes, loved it.
AVOID AVOID AVOID! Rude and criticises to the point of condesending. Arrogant.
AMAZING! Very challenging and makes you think and apply yourself, but oh yeah, you are in College. Very worthwhile prof. Come to most of the classes, do the papers (little homework) and show effort and you'll be fine. TAKE THIS PROF!
Amusing and interesting to hear lecturer. Seldom gives A's and enjoys surprising students by putting them on the spot or asking them philosophical questions. Will push you but is a nice guy and motivates you to try harder. Notices when your not in class, so make them few and far between.
Do not take this class if you are not a good writer. He does not give tests; only papers. The prompts are ridiculous and relate solely to African American history. He says the book is important to read, but he never quizzes you on it or mentions it. Just make sure "TO BE ON POINT!" and attend every class. He will call your phone if you aren't there
Ok the class isn't that hard, but do not take the online course. I'm about half way through and it's pissing me off. There are daily discussions on topics, and when it comes time for a paper he gives you the same prompt size for a 5 page paper as he does for the discussions.
Worst professor I've had! He's arrogant and condescending. He won't respond to your e-mails and if he's late for class you pay for it! He tries to come off organized, but if you listen to his lectures he just talks in circles, and goes on tangents about "perfecting your craft." Dont take him unless you enjoy rude, arrogant, unprofessional teachers!
intelligent, teaching style takes getting used to. a bit disorganized and his professionalism is not what I would have expected from a man in possession of a PhD. He says axe instead of ask, fails to return emails or come to scheduled meetings. But you will learn in his class if you put forth the effort. TA grades and is helpful if you ask him.
He is very challenging but knows what he is talking about. He will push you to be a better writer and thing of clear thoughts and thesis' to present. A lot of his lecturing does focus on African American history. However, African American culture and growth of that culture was a period of time lasting for almost a century in our culture..
I definitely recommend taking this class. It isn't easy by any means but he makes it fun. Dr. Harris most definitely has style and is hilarious. Goes off on random tangents but they tie into the lecture. If you want to be challenged, take his class. You won't regret it. I had doubts at the beginning of the semester but am glad I stuck with it.
IDEOLOGY. This is not your typical history class. He bases everything off of the ideology of american, up to 1865. It's not about dates, and events, its about people and thoughts. Not a terrible class, just not what you'd expect in a basic studies history course. If you like discussions and such, go for it.
Online: Worst online professor I have ever had. The course was too time consuming for a Gen. Ed class. He never responded to emails and the TA couldn't even tell us what we were supposed to be doing. The grading of papers were unfair, but magically after complaining all semester we all failed the papers. Passed the class. Dont take him!
Dr. Harris and this class was the best! He is an awesome professor! He can seem a little intimidating at first but he is always willing to talk to you and help you. If you get a chance to take 333 do it! You read a lot but its so interesting and informative.
Dr. Harris is very intimidating on the first day of classes. He does this to get rid of all the people looking for an easy A! Don't be afraid of him! If you talk with him after class and get to know him, he is one of the best people you will ever meet. He will force you to write clearly and define your intentions for each paper! I took 3 of his...
Took online. Interaction with prof near nil. Feedback not timely respecting ability to implement for future papers. 3 short papers one medium paper, mid-term and final (essays). Discussion board. Sucess depends on writing well and making a defensable argument. Prof encourages students to challenge each other during discussions (16 total. Overall +
As said in others comments, does focus on ideology a LOT...not dates and names. Pushes students to actually learn something, rather than straight memorization. Does seem quite intimidating in the beginning few weeks, but taking his class is definitely worth it and something I really enjoyed as a basic study.
Won't respond to emails and only talks about ideology not actual events. I regret signing up for this class cause I like history but this is not history. His grading is poor and does not communicate with students very well.
This is an awful professor. Avoid if you can. He wants you to "take your craft of writing very seriously" & each day I find grammatical errors in his slides & speech. Never replies to emails & does not show up for scheduled meetings for a lot of students-myself & 6 others included. High amount of work with this teacher. Terrible b/c of the teacher.
Dr. Harris is an amazing professor. He challenges his students to be the best they can be. He is intimidating in the beginning but after a few class's is a very awesome professor. He is more than willing to talk and help you with anything you may need. Challenging class but the best professor I've ever had.
Harris is a very difficult professor. He is a great person and I highly recommend going to see him outside of class for help. By doing that he will help you a lot more and you will have a higher grade. He is not easy but his class is manageable.
He's a really cool guy outside of class, but his lectures are impossible to understand. He uses powerpoint but it is almost impossible to write anything down because he skips around so much. The reading is VERY extensive (at least a chapter and an article for every week) Again, really nice guy but not the right professor for an entry level course
I would not recommend anyone to take this class. Dr. Harris comes across as extremely arrogant towards the students and he is not helpful at all. I emailed him several times over the semester and he never would respond. The work load was ridiculous and there was a lot of reading and writing involved. I did not learn anything from his class.
All he cares about is presenting history from the black perspective. That is not the class I signed up for. I learned nothing in his class. He vere referenced the text book. He wanted essays about theoretic situations from the black perspective but didn't let the students know that until he graded the papers, so everyone did poorly in the class.
I would not recommend a student to take a class with Dr.Harris. I do not believe I learned American History. This is not the class I signed up for. His content throughout the class was overwhelming bias towards black suffrage. We didn't look at other races. In addition this class involved tons of writing and Dr.Harris failed to follow the syllabus.
I am not a fan of history, and this class did not help my cause. Impossible amounts of reading (a book a week, at times), incoherent rambling during class, even the PowerPoints didn't make sense. If you don't want your GPA to plummet, steer clear!
This professor was rediculous. The mid-term took 7.5 hours and the final took 11 hours. Their were questions on the exams that were not in the syllabus and were never discussed prior to the exam. The powerepoionts were useless and his attitude was condesending and arogant.
I am happy I took this course. It was a lot of reading and challenging, but I'm not in college for an easy ride. Dr. Harris' course is designed for you to pass if you just do the reading and think about the course material. All of the readings were interesting. The key to this course is taking feedback from papers and actively improving yourself.
Took this online summer session. My final was 11 pages, took all day to finish. The powerpoints are nothing short of ridiculous. HST 105, do not let that fool you it was anything but an entry level gen ed credit. I did better in Gen Chem than this class.... a book a week, not a chapter, a book ....
Dr. Harris is a great professor. This being said, he is not teaching just for the heck of it. He is a tough grader and holds everyone in the class to a high standard. He wants to make every student in his class better by pushing them, and requiring a lot out of everyone. He is very willing to help and wants to see everyone succeed.
Unbelievably difficult class. We had to have a book read every week. A BOOK, 300 pages typically. Completely intimidating and makes you feel dumb if you don't know the material and ask a question. Citing your papers has to be in Chicago style. He also makes it clear if you cite it wrong he has to report you and could get possibly expelled ): BAD!!!
290 is pretty much the hardest class I have ever taken. Everyone told me that I was an idiot for taking it with Harris, and at times, I believed them. But coming out of this class with him has made me a better student overall. He was always there for me for both classes I've taken with him and would happily help me with anything I needed.
Dr. Harris is by far the worst instructor I have ever had. I am a Senior history major and the lowest grade I received in any history course was a B. He is unclear with what he wants. He baits the paper prompts so that there is only one side discussed. Didn't have office Hours and would only respond with cryptic emails. Avoid at any and all cost.
Dr. Harris is a good professor; he expects the most from his students, so don't slack off or get offended by his feedback. He assigns reading every week, but as long as you get the gist of the books/articles, you'll be fine IMO. If you want to actually challenge the way you think, I'd recommend taking him. Participate too!
Dr. Harris was by far the best proffessor I have had so far at UNCW. If you don't read, you can't participate in class, so pretty much to get a good grade: 1. Read all books assigned 2. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS DISCUSSION 3. use what you and your classmates say in discussion for you papers. If you do these things, you're golden. Good luck!!
Dr. Harris has by far been my favorite professor at UNCW! The papers can be very difficult, but if you participate in the class discussions and ask questions whenever you are unsure, you will be ok. If you are looking for a challenge, definitely take this class. It will change your way of thinking and improve your writing and communication skills!
Sit in front of class
THIS MAN IS THE GOAT OF HISTORY. Yes the work in his class is heavy with essays and blogs once in a while. I'm no history major but Dr. Harris made history interesting. He has a hilarious side to him class class and has a passion for students and teaching. This man deserves a 5.0+ on a scale. He is the Michael Jordan of History.
Grades strictly come from discussion boards and papers. No clear expectations for papers and how grades are given. Hardest course taken in four year program at UNC-W.
Awesome class- if you are a graduate student who doesn't care about their GPA. This is an "intro" class in name only. And it's not history- it's "Philosophy of Early America." Not a single even was studied. Dr Harris teaches through "ideas." Don't take this class unless you want to work your ass off for a B
Professor Harris is great! Even online he makes it very clear that he is there to help you do well in his class. He does, however, make you work for your grade. Be ready for lots of reading, and lots of papers (with CMS style citations!) Overall though I enjoyed him as my professor, and think very highly of his character.
Awesome teacher, must be willing to read and write a lot. Class is mostly all papers, but context of this course is amazing!!
Dr. Harris was an okay prof. There was a ton of reading and homework that felt like busy work at times. But he does really care about your grade, and if you put in the effort you will do well in the class. Overall, it wasn't a bad class. But if you don't like papers or reading it is not the class for you.
Not recommended. It's lots of readings and paper, paper, paper. He wants you to use ideas to learn history. First paper was: Do Puritans identify any threats to the communal idea? You cannot think of these terms in a contemporary sense, it has to be historical. This is a terrible way to teach history.
Absolutely worst class I have ever taken. Spent more hours on this class than my 2 other nursing classes combined. Stupid papers and discussion boards
Dr. Harris was very funny during lectures but claimed to teach history through it's ideas so i found myself walking out of class almost everyday not really knowing what we were supposed to have learned. He gives good feedback on papers and the weekly discussion boards. Very clear on what is expected and flexible if you pay attention and try.
Do not take this class if you are looking to actually learn about history. There is an 18-24 pg final paper. Notes are never taken in class, no historical events or people are ever mentioned nor talked about. He goes off of tangents that can last up to 45 minutes that has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.
I cant believe there are any negative reviews... Harris is easily the best professor Ive ever had. He is the most informative and inspirational teacher. If you genuinely care about America, history, and learning, I can guarantee you will enjoy Dr. Harris and this class. Greatest teacher Ive had in my entire life. I wish I could type more words.
Dr. Harris is ok. He is an extremely tough grader. This is simply an entry level history course but expects you to apply knowledge as if this is an upper level course!!! Doing the material and applying knowledge as best as you know most likely won't be enough. Weekly discussion boards and papers 3 pages long will replace tests. Wouldn't recommend.
This is supposed to be an entry level course but it felt nothing like the sort. All youll do is write papers with very difficult prompts that hardly correlate with the class work/ readings. Spent more time on this class than my classes for my major. He counts a 90 as a B in his class and a 91 as an A. Getting an A is possibly but very hard.
This is the crucible all history majors must pass through. Yes, he makes you read a lot. Yes, he makes you write a lot of papers. If you don't follow instructions and skip class, you will fail. Dr. Harris is an excellent professor and he does not hand out A's. If you are going to whine about having to read and write, history is not for you.
Dr. Harris gave really good feedback on assignments and always was easily available and answered questions effectively. There was a lot of writing and reading, however there was only one assignment weekly. He always gave a good amount of time to complete an assignment.
Do not take his class if you can't do a lot of reading. He runs his undergrad class like a graduate seminar and did not teach us how to write a paper. He says wild stuff sometimes such as when he said he sits in the graveyard for lunch because he sees spirits. But yea he's hard to get clear instructions from and every assignment is super unclear
Dr. Harris is nice. Assignments are unclear at times and i do not think the materials provided are enough to do the essays. Dr. Harris does provide feedback. I felt very stressed by this class, as a perfectionist, due to the lack of direction. This class felt more like and English class than a history class. Lots of reading and writing.
I am a freshman currently in his class and he is amazing, his curriculum and the way he makes you think is amazing. I definitely recommend taking this class if you can. I wish to take another class of his and I am an environmental science major. 10/10 recommend this class and professor.
If you don't like writing or arguing your ideas, don't take this class. However, I learned so much about writing and making sure I can defend my ideas and arguments about to historical ideas. You will be writing about a three page paper a month, and an essay every other week. They aren't super tough, but they are focused on some pretty hard ideas.
this class had me questioning my will to live.
Had ridiculous expectations for a 101-level course. Removed points from my essay on a HUNCH that it was written by AI. I reached out and told him it wasn't he refused to change my grade. Somehow was the only one of my professors to not have a course evaluation at the end of the semester which was disappointing because I would have ripped him apart.
I usually don't write these but this class was absolutely terrible. The average for most discussion board posts was in the 70-80 range. He had unrealistic expectations for a 105 course and didn't tell you why he took off points (no rubric). I also emailed him 5 times during the semester and never once got a reply.
Expect a challenging course with lots of writing and reading, but Professor Harris provides great feedback. Utilize resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook to stay on top of the workload.
Great Professor, enjoyed this class so much, Attendance is mandatory. After 4 absences your grade drops one letter grade, only assignments are discussion boards and essays. Max assignments is about 1 per week. Lots of reading and writing .
If you don't like speaking up, do not take this class. On the first day he asked me about my GPA, grades last semester, and how my grades were in high school. He asks about unrelated things every class. His lectures have nothing to do with the work, and he's also a ridiculous grader. Although he will push you, he always crosses the line.
The course material is not straightforward like I would expect a history course to be. I haven't received a single A in the course, including our syllabus agreement, for which you had to write a paper acknowledging that you had agreed to EVERY point on the syllabus. If you are looking for an easy online credit, this is not the one.
His expectations for a 100-level course are absurd. The averages on assignments were normally Cs. I earned As on most assignments and barely have an A in the class. Take anyone else if you can. There is so much reading, and it is nearly impossible to do well in the class. He will grade harder than an English professor on your essays.
I don't know if the tough grading was him or the TA, but either way, it was ridiculous. I emailed him about ten times throughout the semester with questions and he never once responded. I got an 80 on the final essay, and the only feedback as to why was that it was too long when it didn't even have a word count max or min.
One word, terrible. 100 level course harder than 300-400 level course. Grades late, everything is a paper. Randomly changes syllabus multiple times and gives you 2 day heads up. Requires "mandatory" email check ins, but can't even reply to the email spelling my name correctly (my name isn't sophisticated either). His TA grades, he does nothing.
Something will always be wrong with your papers in this course. When you correct it, the next paper you submit has something new wrong with it. This course has nothing to do with learning and everything to do with patience and how much time you're willing to sacrifice for what should be an enjoyable and not overly difficult course. TERRIBLE.
Just…just drop out if he's your only option for 290 just drop out.
Dr. Harris' provided no lectures whatsoever, only bare bones PowerPoints that were not even in complete sentences. When giving feedback on assignments he would tell you that you did something wrong but never how to correct it in the future. I love all things US History but this was miserable even for me!
He is an amazing lecturer. The assignments include lengthy readings and essays, of which we did have extra to write (4 instead of the 3 mentioned in the syllabus). However, I greatly enjoyed this, and it was a wonderful opportunity to improve my writing. I have never had a professor give such detailed feedback on how to improve my writing. :)
