this teacher is horrible, he cant teach, hes boring, he makes you fall asleep in cl;ass, he doesnt explain anything, by the time the semester was half done more than half the c lass already dropped. he's not sympathetic, not understanding, he's one of the worst teachers ever--he's up there with ling
This teacher is like a robot, he doesn't even look in his student eye when he talks to them. Do not take his class if you want to do well in math80.
Extremely hard. Exams are irrelevant to lectures + homework. Very smart guy who doesn't resonate w/ average students. I'd suggest to avoid any of his classes.
Took him for both 115 and 120 this semester. He's very bright and teaches the class quite formally. Exams are tougher than homework, but generally easier than the problems he solves on the board. Studying from those worked better for me. He can be a little cold in person, but he was very helpful in office hours. Recommended for math majors.
Avoid this professor if you can. His tests are not easy and it was pretty hard to figure out what my grade was. He knows his stuff, but the material for the class is pretty difficult to understand.
Mumbles, distant from class, stumps himself with his own examples
The man is practically a genius, and he really knows his stuff, but he doesn't know how to get it across very well. I wouldn't recommend him.
Aguiar mumbles in lectures, is distant from the class, and stumps himself with his own examples. On the day before finals, I was correcting him from the back. You could probably learn better on your own.

This guy knows his stuff and is a nice guy, but isn't so great at communicating the knowledge to the students.
I added his class by random this semester. He himself is a genius. He can calculates complicated stuff without calculators. But to be honest, I feel confused what he's talking about and his explanation sometimes. His tests are not really difficult, comparing with the homework. I like this teacher, and I have been getting A since the first test.
This teacher is horrible. He doesn't seem to want to actually help his students pass the class, by breaking down the material to be understandable. And when you tell him, he gets an attitude. Not good! I wouldn't recommend him.
He's a bit of an eye sore....mumbles to himself, and stumbles himself on his own examples. He's such an genius (IQ probably compatible with mensa) but can't communicate to students at all. Tests are irritatingly hard. Half the class dropped out after the first two midterms.
Cool teacher, he passed me.
The teacher knows his stuff.
I'ts extremely hard to get a passing grade in his class. He's a teacher that doesn't believe in curving and dosen't want to give you safety options. For the final, he gave us an option to choose whether we wanted it to be grade at 20% or 40%, but we have to decide early before the final, so the option is like a gamble.
Great teacher in terms of forcing you understand every detail of the topic by have you take one quiz per week. After the Final, you will realize how good you are on that subject. Meanwhile a mediocre teacher in terms of clarity and helpfulness outside of class. He is kind of a self-centered guy, not very considerate of students' feelings.
He was my first caculus teacher and the class was pretty tough. He is a tough grader, but curved the grades a little bit, which helped. He's a wiz at math. sometimes his examples don't make the material crystal clear. study hard, use office hrs., use student learning center. I was a better student after taking his class.
He always mumbles and digresses constantly. Goes through work way too fast. Is not at all clear about 10 times in a summer class he even confused himself!
HOLY CRAP! do not waste your time, money and effort taking this guy's class! just look at all the disatisfied comments! he cannot communicate with students at all! and the midterms are very difficult and will leave you sleepless the night b4 midterms! this class was a total nightmare! i honestly recommend him to work on his communication skills.
All you have to do to pass his class and understand the subject is show up and listen
He is very hard to understand. I tried talking to him during office hours for help and he didn't seem very interested. He doesn't seem to connect well with his students.
If you deinfitely know your stuff and know what you're doing then you are good to go. I got B's and a few A's on his test and never did any homework. I never even really showed up for class much except on test days and got a B+ for the class. If you don't know anything, then you're pretty much screwed. Nice guy overall.
He is a good teacher, you have to do the homework but who doesnt? He will help you in class if you ask. all around nice guy.
He is the WORST teacher ever. Sometimes he doesn't even know what he's talking about. No one attends his class because it's so boring. His grading scale is very low but still only about 1 or 2 people pass with a A. Half the class fails the course because he cant teach! When he lectures, he doesn't explain things clearly. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
his class is cool. it was very hard. I took a summer class for this math 80 and it was very tough. but he is a great teacher. you have to show up for class and do all the homework and you'll pass
I know math is boring to begin with, but guy is just supports that whole theory.
he is a very good teacher, and he is very nice. good for you to take his class.
I never go to class because i get more out of the book than i do in class. He goes on random tangents and confuses everyone. Hes a good guy but his class is VERY confusing. If youre good in math i'd recomend him, if not.. find someone else.
This teacher is a boring, always late, and does not teach well. You can just read the textbook yourself instead of going to class. A short quiz every Friday.
I mean...he's an ok teacher. If you ask him a question, he'll answer to the best of his ability...but he does go through the work way too fast.
I took him for summer school last year and he's a pretty good teacher in my opinion. He gives you a lot of examples which is really helpful in learning the material. There was extra credit on each exam and he did curve the overall grade. He's not as bad as it seems!
Patient, concise, and has a great sense of humor. Assigns the homework that is necessary to LEARN the material. Math can't be learned by just watching. Preps for tests/exams. I hate math, but he made it understandable and enjoyable. Enjoyable and engaging.
I don't know what's up with this guy... I don't believe he's actually a teacher! He seems kind-of air-headed to me. EXTREMELY disorganized and forgetful! Uses this really old book with a whole bunch of errors in it. He clearly understands the subject but doesn't explain it clearly.
Clear, consistent and fairly engaging. He covers everything he'll test in class with many examples. Pay attention to everything he says because he throws in important comments without putting emphasis on them. Take active notes, do all the homework and you will be absolutely fine. Gives extra credit opportunity. All over reasonable, fair teacher.
This guy is cool. He gives a lot of examples in the class. Gave practise exams, what was very halpful. I recomend him for students who need to practise a lot to understand subject.
he SUCKS! a terrible teacher that i ever have. dont take his class
I've had a lot a math classes, & a lot of really good teachers at City College (thou not all). Prof Aguiar is definitely one of the better. A real laid back attitude, tries to be funny (but so far funny hasn't happened - I only sense the confidence in his attempts), and is quite patient listening & understanding while interacting w/ his students.
he is arrogant I seen him make fun of the dyslectic guy in class he said " what are you dyslectic" then made a face like the guy was dumb when the guy said he was dyslectic Glen Aguiar tryed to cover it up and mumbled "I better be careful" to himself. don't take his class he should not teach he should be in a lab collecting frog specimen.BEWARE!!!!
Hard to follow if math is not your forte. Seems to be a nice guy but not very didactic. He mentioned several times in class that he was lazy (!) and cutting steps during the exercises, as if going into more detail were unnecessary. Terrible book, good think he used it to give HW only.
C, overall I give his class a C.Why? Becasuse his lecture and structure of the class are staight from the book but his approach/style is straight boring and at times condescending.
After our first exam 80% of the class was failing and he decided to move on. I told him that as a stats prof. he should consider the numbers and maybe go back and review. He wasnt having it. Then I realized that the book he had us buy had the wrong answers in the back. I dropped and took Masood. He is awesome but you need a calculator
Aguiar is a pretty laid back guy albeit, a bit socially awkward. He'll make fun of students that ask questions that seem trivial to him. I think he just doesn't know how to interact with people. As a teacher there's nothing special here. Lectures straight from the book. He'll often go off on tangents solving the same problem for an entire hour.
This has gotta be, by far the most mind numbingly boring class I have ever taken. He never takes attendance so while he eventually learns everyone's name by personally passing back homework, you can miss class pretty often, only do homework for half the semester but as long as you're there for tests and quizzes, you'll pass.
What a dufus. Siriously, this teacher is such an airhead. He doesn't make any sense and when you ask questions he responds my confusing you more. He does not prepare you at all for the next math course you take. I did not learn anything in his class, yet I did all the work, attended all the classes and for some reason was given a C!
so quiet and just does problems on the board. doesnt help you at all unless you really listen and learn from copying the problems
The worst instructor I've ever had in my entire life.
Lectures on the underlying theory are excellent. Could stress the basics a bit more rather than covering the board with elaborate proofs, which included errors. Testing could be more frequent, as volumes of material condense down to just a few questions. Class average was quite poor, and I believe it could have been better with a few adjustments.
If you have any kind of math anxiety and/or bad math teacher history, strongly recommend NOT taking his class. You want to learn Algebra with clarity and genuine understanding, take Bertens or Saunders or many of the other math teachers with good communication and people skills.
Very funny teacher. People complain that he comes across as little smartaleck but this happens when someone is asking a dumb question that could be answered if they studied. You'll like this teacher if you study and try to comprehend instead of being a "lazy-give-me-give-me-I-don't-understand-anything" student.
Fantastic teacher. Very well-organized, passionate about the material and teaching. Many students have difficulties because he writes tests that require you to actually *learn* the material instead of memorizing and plugging in formulas. If you care about learning more than just getting an easy A, he's the teacher for you.
hes irritating and not funny, even though he tries to be. hes not a good teacher at all. even though i passed i struggled most of the semester. his explanations and the ones in the book dont match. i dont recommend this teacher
Choose this teacher if u want to pass this Calculus I easily. First, though his teaching stuff is not that useful, u will do great in his class if u read textbook by yourself and work a little bit hard. Second, he is very funny and patient to your opinion if u have some advice. One of my friend is poor in Calculus but still pass.
My only qualm with Mr Aguiar is that he is not always clear on his lectures. However, frequent visits to his office and visiting the math lab helped clarify things for me. Mr Aguiar is a very brilliant and great teacher overall.
This man seems to feel proud when he puts something on a test that nobody gets right. He needs to understand that this is not a competition between him and us; he is supposed to help us learn.
Quizes every friday, based on HW. Tests are pretty hard. Teaching style is to run through example after example the whole time. Doesnt like calculators.
Mr Aguiar is a very average teacher and is hilarious if you get dorky humor. Granted he is not the best explainer of mathmatical concepts, but i would say that most of the people who say he is too hard not good are the same people who didnt spend much time doing the homework or doing more practice problems if they were struggling, all around hes ok
Prof Aguiar is a very nice kinda dorky guy, he knows the material VERY well however if you need a little time to go over the work or math isn't your strong subject look for a different teacher.
This class was really hard. He is pretty good at explaining stuff.
If you the homework and actually understand what you are doing, then his class is a breeze. Don't do the homework, or don't show up? Then good luck. Just understand all the examples he does, cause thats what the test is practically based on
110C is a very difficult class and Prof Aguiar can be somewhat intimidating, but if you show him you're serious he will help you a lot. Also he is very responsive to the needs of the class (ask him for a review day or to push back the test if you/the rest of the class doesn't understand. He will listen!) Great in his office hours/very funny guy!
This class will be hard to pass. Aguiar constantly mumbles and goes way too fast. The homework is not graded, trust me that is not a good thing. Also, there is no textbook so the only source of material comes from aguiar, who likes to speak quiety and blocks the notes with his body, then erases them. You will find it very hard to stay focused.
Great professor! His class is easy to pass,if you paid attention in class. No book use.Every test has 10 extra points. Easy grader.
Very hard teacher. He has a very clear voice, which is thrown off by he's constant mistakes. He puts the hardest and lease reviewed material on the tests. If you want a good math teacher avoid him at all cost.
Great Class!!Just as long as you show up and do the work you will pass.
Great Teacher!! Just go to class and do the homework and you will pass.
i've read the other reviews about glenn and i can't understand how anyone can give him good reviews. he will put that hardest least reviewed material on tests. the test he gives are not made for u to ever get a perfect score. if he didn't grade on a curve half of the class would fail. i got a C in his class.
mr. aguiar has a lot of passion for math and lets it be known. he made me want to know more and do better, but calculus was hard for me.i felt comfortable asking questions from homework and class lectures. he was really fast in his lectures but with the help of online tutorials it didn't really matter.
He doesn't explain things well. The class was a self -learning experience. no need to submit homework and attend class.
He is quite a nice guy and is very open to questions but he has a tendency to mumble and like another reviewer noted, block the notes on the chalkboard with his lanky body. I passed with an A through practice and some self-learning. Overall, he is feasible so long as you sit in front to hear him and find extra help from your class overachievers.
As the others have stated, this is a self-learning type of class. He's a nice guy. But what he does is when class starts, he just goes in. By that I mean he just starts to work on random problems on the board and for the most part when he explains it, it's as if he were just talking himself. There are no guidelines on what topics will be covered.
doesn't grade homework so you dont know what you did wrong and what to improve on. like everyone else is saying, it's a self learning class. you have to read the text on your own or you will fail miserably. if you want to waste money on lowering your gpa then i recommend taking his class.
Very passionate about math and a funny guy. However, his stats class is very difficult if you've never taken college math and try to take it in the summer. I thought this class would have some practical application for the non-math major--Mr. Aguiar's class does not.
He's a nice guy, but the problem is that i cant keep up with work. Every time he does it on the board he doesn't quite do it step by step. He expects us to know how he came up with that answer
Initially was failing class getting Ds &Cs for two exam and all quizzes.Wasn't a hard-working student. Went to his office hour, told me I'm getting C, but very encouraging said I just need to get a B forlast exam and final to get a B in the class. I did it!Prepared for110B which I got an A in. currently in 110C. Most of these classes ARE selftaught
he didnt really explain the work and his test doent make sense. when he's teaching the class it feels like he is mumbling instead of talking. also he doesnt explain the work and just do the work in his head and just write it out on the board
His lectures are a bit fast, so you need to read the material before coming to class. He's not as difficult as most people say.. Most of the materials on his exams are from his lectures. Just take notes and review them before the exam and you should be fine. I didn't work hard, and I ended up with a B.
he doesn't know how to teach at all. there is nothing you can learn from his lecture. no eye contact with the students. he looks at the blackboard all the time while he is presenting "speech". the exam is totally out of what you could expect. Don't take him! one more thing, he always switches his flip flop, make the classroom stink
Mr. Aguiar is a nice guy, but he does not present material very clear. He likes to ask challenging problems on the test (at least one proof that would mess up your whole grade if you miss it). His B is from 70-90, but it is hard to get an A in the class. Many proofs problems are HIT or MISS kind of deal anyways.. Good luck!
One of the most frustrating courses I've taken. Aguiar often blocks problems with his body while he's teaching and skips steps he thinks students should knowespecially with proofs. Homework policy changed three times and no midterm grade was posted. Typical number of students receiving an A on a test (80 to 100): zero to one.
He answers your questions and explain them well. Very informative, my advice is not to miss classes, he explains very clearly in classes, but if you miss classes, you will miss a big chunk of info and you will begin to find things frustrating. if you had to miss classes, copy notes from someone!
Very easy!!! Give practice tests : )
He's a really nice teacher, but he goes super fast when he explains a problem, he likes to jump ahead and expects you to follow his pace. If you plan to take his higher level math classes, be ready to work three times as hard as you would for a normal math class. Personally, I found his lecture pointless almost if you just study on your own. Bad.
Sometimes he likes to cracke a joke to change up the mood! But it was difficult to follow his lecture when he turns around and talk to the board rather to the students. As if he is lecturing the blackboard... if you miss one problem on a test it basically brings your grade down by a letter grade. He is really nice, but I regret signing up :(
The way he teaches is questionable on how he taught for the last many years and he got good feedback. I had to grind the math book so hard, I might as well just learn it myself. Recommend about 4 hours on reviewing the material beforehand and after lecture everyday.
extremely hard not recommend.
First day of class he states that he won't use the textbook so when doing homework we have no idea where to access what we are studying. He jumps all over the map so it's not like we can start from the beginning. Homework is assigned at every class & he only gives the answer -not how to get to that answer and then only goes over 3-4 of the problems
There's a high level of mathematical sophistication to the material he presents. Fluency in the language of math is paramount is this class. Homework is challenging, forcing you to be methodical in your approach. No plug-and-chug in this class. Extra credit questions on the exams, which is generous of him, not many teachers do that.
The worst teacher in the CCSF. He can't explain in the easy way because he explains for business major - advanced level. He doesn't use a book, he also doesn't recommend to use a tutor. So, if you are not a master in math science, avoid to take his class because you have no chance to pass this class. He doesn't have an extra credit as well.
Tests are easier than homework, but the class is boring somehow. He doesn't grade the homework but you really need to do it and bring some questions, which really help your tests.
First time I have ever enjoyed going to a math class. Doesn't put you on the spot & is clear in lectures & explanations, occasionally cracks sarcastic jokes, don't think there was a class without laughter. Daily homework, but just by doing this &coming to class each day I was able to get A on each test. Very fair grader
great teacher! pass easily!!!
Took statistics with him last spring. No complaints, did a solid job teaching the material. Enjoyed my time in the class.
Great sense of humor. Explains things in detail, goes over homework and makes sure everyone is on the same page. Goes a little fast when doing problems on the board but as long as you pay attention he is easy to follow.
Awful class and his teaching manners. He is explaning material for himself and mumbling toward to the wall. He forces you to take his office hours but while this time he just repeats all material at the same level, so you will not be able to ask for clarifications. In the end, only 15 students remained instead of 37 who were enrolled.
Great teacher, love his class. He will go over the homework questions before the next class, just ask as much as you want to.
Although he doesn't take attendance, showing up to class is important to get the hw handouts. Grading is based strictly on exams, and usually he'll take the easiest questions from the hw for the exams. It's a really straightforward class. If you show up every day, do the hw, ask questions, and study you'll get an A.
He does not give any assignments so our whole grade is based solely on Exams. He does not explain how to do things he simply posts problems with the answers. He has office hours but they are early and he just mumbles through it.
Great math teacher, if you don't understand a problem ASK QUESTIONS he'll be glad to go over it with you. Take advantage of his office hours, and make sure you understand how to solve the problems of each modules. Exams are based on homework exercises and he choses the basic questions BUT make sure you complete them all correctly.
The worst math Professor Ive ever had! He skips all the steps and he takes everything for granted. Dont take this class if you dont want to lower you GPA
Logging on to class was basically, watch man use his apple note app to do math problems. Explanations were unorganized if there was one at all. He has borderline no teaching ability. I visited his office hours to ask a question and he came across as condescending. You will end up teaching yourself calculus on YouTube. Big time regret.
all of your grade is dependent on exams. does not speak clearly throughout entire lecture and is difficult to understand what is being written. hardly learned anything. highly suggest anybody else.
