He makes you earn it, but he is very sweet (most of the time, but he also can be rude to students who ask dumb questions). You'll study a lot, but the lectures are interesting.
Wants much detail on his test. Certainly makes you earn the grade. Very knowledgable of the material and makes it interesting. Recommend this class over Beito or Dorr.
Mr. Brasher's class is very interesting and he makes it easy to understand. The tests come straight from the notes, but require a lot of studying. There is no need to read the text book. He gives quizzes occassionally on readings assigned from a second book. You have to read to make good grades on the quizzes. I made an A in the class.
Mr. Brasher made the material interesting to learn, he seemed very well versed on it, seemed like he honestly loved what he was teaching. However, could be very rude to students, particularly when he isn't getting the feedback he wants. Is a bit anal, but the class is pretty easy.
Great teacher!
Glenn Brasher is a jackass! He def knows his material, but he's anal on the tests. The study sheets he hands out are useless. He is a complete smart ass to the students and no one in our class likes him!
This was definitely not one of my favorite classes. He lectures everyday and you are required to be in every class or else he takes off points. The study sheets he hands out do not help and he is very, very nitpicky on the tests. Would not recommend.
He is hell on your tests, very picky. However, he is a really excellent lecturer, has a lot of energy and passion, and he was always willing to help. This class challenged me at every turn, but coming to class always felt like "story time." He is that interesting to listen to. I've told all my friends to take his class.
he is a tough grader, but a really interesting lecturer. I don't know if I would call him "hot," (he is a bit out of shape), but he is very cute and sweet. :-) Good class!
Straight up best lecturer ive had in college. Tough grader, but great guy.
knows his stuff, great lectures. tough grader, but come to class and take good notes and you'll do fine.
Great teacher! Teaches by theme rather than chronologically. Really helpful! Gives lots of notes. Great lecturer! Learned a lot.
Great lecturer; really enjoyed the class. Did make me feel incredibly uncomfortable after the class was over, though.
He is a tough grader, but you will actually enjoy coming to class because his lectures are interesting.
Loved it.
he runs a "tight ship" and i was always slightly intimidated. but i hate history and thought i would hate this class. turns out it was one of the best i've had because of his lectures. Everyone says he is a picky grader, and this is very true. and he can sometimes be intimidating, but he was very helpful and nice when i needed some help.
Grades way too tough for a lower level class. Don't take
I am taking this class now and can tell you that the problem is not the tests, its the quizzes on the readings. They are ridiculous.
His class is all about his lecture, which is where most of the information for the tests come from. His tests are moderate I made B's on all of my tests just by studying my notes. it is the quizzes that screw you over he knows that they pull your grade down. without the quizzes i would have had a B, but with them i had a D. i had to drop the class
I just took my final exam for this class, and I am actually going to miss the class now that its over. I think that says it all. i really enjoyed it.
Challenging class which pushed me. Good prof though and willing to help.
I really enjoyed this class. He is a tough grader, but I sought his help and did much better after that. hated the quizzes, but mostly this was a good class. He was well liked by everyone I knew in the class.
Very interesting class.Take notes begining to end. All my notes are posted on study blue for his 203 and 204. Memorize ALL notes 4 test. On state the relationship q's write at least half a page. For the quizes u MUST read the chapter and at the end is a section of terms study those and subjects that surround them. quizes are 25% of total grade.
His test are hard, so study before hand and take lots of notes. Sometime it does feel like his class drags on forever.
His lectures are interesting and easy to understand. He tends to group his lectures by subject rather than chronologically, so it may get confusing. He tends to lecture as if he's telling a story, so it's not too easy to lose focus. The tests are somewhat difficult, but if you study and pay attention in class, you'll do fine.
Interesting lecturer, nice guy. Great class. The tests are moderately difficult, but lectures are never boring. I learned a ton.
He is a great teacher, but his tests are ridiculous. He grades really hard.
Uses the I Wish I Was There series intensely. Study these readings intently for the daily quizzes because he may pull some fairly ambiguous questions from the readings. Read over the notes every day after class and you'll do great on the tests.
Great professor. Attendance is not mandatory but if you do not attend you miss out on lectures, which contain all the info for exams. He does not utilize Tegrity and does not post his notes. If you are interested in HY, this a great course. If you want an easy A and can take great notes, this is a good course.
LOVED his class!! His lectures were very interesting and to the point. He gives you study guides for the tests. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! You will learn alot from this class!
Had 3 classes w/ Dr. Brasher. He is an extremely effective lecturer. (There were students brought to tears by his discussion of the life of a southern slaves). Don't miss class- good notes are a necessity. He puts lecture outlines online. Quizzes are impossible to pass without actually doing the reading. Picky grader, but I loved the classes.
Dr. Brasher is a great teacher and story teller. His classes are always entertaining, but to get a good grade you have to put in effort. Reading quizzes count for a good chunk of the grade, be sure to read carefully! For testing take good notes every class and utilize the study guides he posts on e-learning.
He is a great teacher. His test are hard but he makes you want to learn the material because he is such a good lecturer.
My roommate & I took the same class with him, but my roommate had never liked history up till then. With Dr. Brasher she began to love and really enjoy history. I loved his class. He is very balanced, interesting, knowledgable, and fair. He grades very particularly, but wants to see all his students grasp the concepts and do well. HIGHLY recommend.
Great honors class! I learned so much.
Very good professor and knows his material. Be prepared to write a lot and study a lot if you want a good grade! test are 75% written but if you go to class in is actually enjoyable. Stressed me out but i would take it again bc dr brasher is a good teacher
His tests are mostly written and aren't that easy. He is super picky about the "state the relation" questions. I studied forever (and I don't mean I pulled an all-nighter) and I made an F on the first test due to his picky grading. His quizzes will kill you as well considering some of the questions he puts on there are asking about tiny details.
He was a good teacher and knew his stuff. You have to go to class or you would be lost (unless you have someone to take notes for you). Attending class and actually hearing what he says can help you more with his tests more than just reading notes. His tests are fairly difficult, but if you listen and look over the material you will be fine.
Dr. Brasher is a great teacher and his lectures are really interesting and keep your attention. His tests are not easy! You have to study a ton and he grades pretty harsh on the short answer and essay questions. I definitely learned a lot, though and actually started to like history.
I hated any kind of History class during high school, Dr. Brasher's way of keeping you interested involves daily quizes that keep you reading your notes. His colorful lectures mesmerize you with a different but realistic perspective. This gentleman may come off as busy or condescending sometimes but he means well and actually loves teaching.
GREAT TEACHER! Go to class, take good notes, and read for the quizzes and a good grade is definitely possible. He knows so much and makes the class so interesting. I would definitely take this class again.
I recommend taking him if you want to appreciate history because he really is a great teacher and loves what he does. If you are looking for an easy grade, stay away. Doable if you actually read and take good notes.
I was in the honors class. He is the best history teacher I have ever had. If you record the lectures and listen to them before the test you will do really great on his tests. If you pay attention, work hard, and take notes you will also do well.
Great teacher, but extremely hard tests. You take notes constantly and he grades very difficultly. Study well before the test day, record the lectures, and COME TO CLASS and you'll be okay.
I enjoyed this semester with Dr. Brasher! I was always excited to come to class because his lectures are so interesting and he clearly loves what he does. He was also super cool & friendly, encouraged the class to make friends with each other, and even organized a trip to the theater see the movie Lincoln. I highly recommend taking his class.
Great teacher in terms of knowledge and interest. Class mandatory to pass, and it is a difficult class with a lot of work. Tests are decent but he grades so difficulty. Need the two books for the papers, wont be able to get above and B without reading them. You don't use the actual class book, just the other three. Difficult class but manageable.
Well, where to start.. I love history a lot, it's my minor and this class has been a challenge for me. The quizzes are difficult, because he asks very specific details, and he is a very harsh grader on the tests.. However, he has offered some extra credit, and is a very good teacher in terms of making the class interesting.
Loved every second of this class and I definitely plan to take more of his classes. He is tough but fair and very direct and clear about what he expects. Very friendly guy and tried to get the students to befriend each other. I appreciated that.
By far the best History teacher I have ever had. He teaches the material like a story and makes it very interesting. His tests are very difficult but after the first one you will know what to expect. I highly recommend anyone who loves history to take this class. Make sure you come to class and take very detailed notes and you should do fine.
I LOVED this class. I always hated history, but he made the class so interesting. It was challenging for sure; don't bet on an easy A, but if you're looking for a great professor who makes the class fun, he's your guy. Make sure you read for the quizzes, cause they're easy credit. Be very precise on the state the relationship questions on the test!
Attendance isn't mandatory but go to class because if you miss there is no way to get the info. Great teacher and by far the best history teacher I've had. Class was pretty hard but very interesting. My only complaint is the chapter quizzes. They were way too specific and too hard. Tests are A LOT of writing. He loves football.
You will definitely have to attend class to pass. The test is based on just the lecture, and because he lectures non stop for 50 minutes, you can not really rely on someone else's notes to get you through. The study guides are broad, but don't be broad when studying, make sure you know everything. This class is work.
This guy knows how to tell a story for sure and make it interesting. Tests are not easy in this class. Not because they are hard, but because you have very little time to write and complete the multiple choice. I recommend him as a fantastic teacher, but he tries to cram way too much into his tests and is highly critical of what you write.
This guy knows how to tell a story for sure! Attendance is crucial. Tests are not easy. Not because they are hard but because he tries to cram way too much content into the test in the limited time you are given to write and complete the multiple choice. He's the guy you want to take but don't want to because the tests are arguably unreasonable.
Brasher really knows his stuff. Very successful in presenting the info as a story. Don't skip class, everything you need to know for the test is said in class. you can't catch up with the book alone. Tests are pretty hard, but fair - he almost exclusively tests on his lectures, so good notes are a must and you'll be okay. Offers some extra c.
This class (and probably a-lot of his classes) are a little tough but he's a great teacher who's really funny and his lectures are really funny and makes it really interesting.
attendance is a must! you won't pass if you don't go. tests cover every detail lectures; multiple choice, fill in the blank 4-5 essay questions on tests. he does know his stuff, his lectures were always interesting and kept my attention, talks from beginning to end. if you seek outside help he'll work with you!
This class is not easy. He will lecture every day from start to finish, but the guy knows his history and his lectures can actually be pretty interesting. His class consist of 10 quizzes and 3 test. You WILL have to read to pass these quizzes. You will not pass the test if you dont go to class and take good notes.
Dr. Brasher is my favorite teacher that I have ever had here. He is super helpful when you need him. You take 12 quizzes but drop 2. Theres no essays and only 3 tests. You HAVE to go to class to pass though. Make sure you know ow to take good notes and you will be perfectly fine.
Very hard class but if you're willing to put in the effort he will help you out a lot! Come to class, if you don't you will not pass. Test are difficult so make sure you understand the material very well! I did not make that good of a grade but this class is worth taking if youre willing to work!
Had to drop this class. Great teacher and great lectures but is an insanely hard class.
great teacher, very helpful, tests are very hard. he is very helpful if you go to his office hours, this saved my grade. if you show you are trying and looking for help he takes that into consideration when giving your final grade. i would have failed if i didn't go to office hours.
Great teacher. You MUST take notes and study for the reading quizzes to pass. Try not to miss any classes, but otherwise, this was my favorite course of the semester.
I cannot say enough about Dr. Brasher! 430 was my third class with him. After hearing horror stories about other 430 classes I was nervous to take it. Brasher made the class a breeze and was super helpful in editing our final papers. The lectures on the Civil War he gave really helped with context. He truly goes above and beyond for his students!
Dr. Brasher is a great teacher! He intimidated me at first but he's really a nice guy. Great sense of humor! He made the class really interesting, but I wouldn't say it was an easy A. A lot of busywork, but he is a pretty fair grader, the amount of work more than the material itself is what made it hard. I worked hard for an A-.
Great Teacher but you really need to pay attention and make sure you write down all the notes. Read the chapter for the quizzes or you won't do to good! Study for the tests, if not you will fail. Go to class and take notes! Overall he's a great teacher!
The best lecturer I've had in college! He really knows the material, and has the ability to keep your attention from beginning to end (even if you hate history). Make sure you read for the quizzes, and take GREAT notes. His tests come straight from his lectures. He can be a tough grader, but he helps you out if you seek outside help.
He is by far one of the worst professors at the university. He refuses to answer emails, will not explain things which does not help when your doing the online course in a different state. Says one thing but then grades differently. Any opinion paper is not an opinion paper, he will give you a lower grade if he doesn't agree with it. DON'T TAKE HIM
I cannot believe how many good reviews he has because he is easily the worst professor I have ever had in 4 years at UA. Maybe it's different when it's a class that's not online, but he was disrespectful in his grading comments. He gave opinion papers but they weren't opinion because if you didn't agree with him, it would reflect. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Loved this class and really came to admire him by the end of the semester. Lectures are very interesting, he knows his stuff, and is a great storyteller. His tests are tough, and you really have to read a lot to do well in his quizzes. I really had to earn the grade I got, and I appreciate that.
I took his online class and it was tough. In addition to book chapter quizzes, you have to write a ton of essays (way too many, in my opinion) and he grades them pretty harshly. However, I found that as the semester went on, my grade improved, which makes sense given how much more effort I put into them and followed the feedback he gave.
Haha good luck. Online is rough... if you're an excellent writer you have a chance. Our class had grades all over the board... so its hard to say. One week you'll get a 90% on a paper and the next you'll get a 75%. He is well organized. You definitely should get the book because you can't use any resources besides the book and what he gives you.
Based on what I've seen others say about his lecturing, I wish I hadn't taken the online class. It was a LOT of reading and work (many essays), and he does grade rough. Still, I found the course to be pretty straight forward, his feedback on the papers helpful, and he responded to my emails pretty quickly. Solid class.
In my previous experience with History teachers, Dr. Brasher is the best one I've had by far. He tells you exactly what he expects and what will be on the exam; however, you still have to work for your grade and it won't be easy. My advice is to do what he says to the letter and try to go above and beyond or else you won't get an A.
Dr. Brasher is a great lecturer, and I enjoyed the class itself. He grades very harshly though, so don't expect an easy A. If you miss a single class you will be extremely behind.
He was such an awesome lecturer, he made it so interesting and you actually learned the history he was teaching. However, when it comes to the tests, if you don't understand it how he does and word it exactly how he wants it, you won't get credit. It's a shame he grades that way because he is an awesome lecturer.
Dr. Brasher has great lectures. He really brings the subject matter to life. Tests are rather difficult, and the quizzes he gives are no cake walk either. Attendance is not taken, but the fact that he doesn't post notes coupled with there not really being a textbook means that if you don't show up, you have no hope on the tests.
Lectures are very interesting. He really knows his stuff. However your grade comes down to 3 extremely difficult tests and quiz grades.
I do not recommend taking any of his classes. Sure, the lectures are interesting, but they do not prepare you for his quizzes/tests. Also no matter how hard you study for said quizzes and tests, if you do not answer the questions EXACTLY like he would have you will not receive credit. This class is more about learning his grading than history.
His tests are not hard if you come to class and take good solid notes. Really enjoyed his lectures and that he makes you think about the "process" of history, not just memorize facts. As he jokes all the time, this ain't your coach's history class! Friendly guy (usually) and funny too (in a dorky sort of way). Take his class!
Dr. Brasher is a very good professor. He is a very nice guy and really pretty laid back. His class is very lecture heavy but he has great knowledge of the subjects he lectures on. The only thing I did not like was that the class comes down to two areas of grading, reading quizzes and the 3 tests, which are very tough tests and he grades them tough
He is hard, but I LOVED the lectures!!!
All I'm saying is that if you're trying to take this as an easy credit GOOD LUCK!!!
Dr. Brasher's lecture are amazing and this is coming from someone who hates history but his Test are very hard and you have to know exactly what he is trying to teach you and there were about 12 reading quizzes, so this is not a easy grade by all means, but if you really want to learn a subject, he is the man for you.
This guy really tells history like a story. He makes it great to hear about and easy to remember. If you want an easy class, don't take him, but if you want to learn and to be challenged, this guy is as good as it gets.
Awesome guy. His lectures are unparalleled. He understands everything fluently. I want to take one of his classes as long as I'm at this school.
I love this professor so much! His lectures are incredible and I have always learned so much from them, even outside of history. If you do not attend class and get the lecture notes, you will definitely not pass this class. He requires reading for the class and some of the homework assignments involve the textbook as well. Overall, he's awesome!
His lectures are very interesting and easy to listen to. He's really passionate about history which made him easier to learn from. He gives a lot of reading quizzes that are pretty difficult. His exams are extremely hard and he grades them very harshly. If you don't go to class and study a lot, you won't pass his class.
I absolutely love this class. The lectures are very interesting and easy to sit through. Take LOTS of notes and study every night before class and you'll do well. Pop quizzes often, but they are straightforward. Only 3 tests, and as long as you study well, you can get a good grade. Funny guy and amazing teacher. You have to work, but its worth it.
This class is difficult, but Brasher is an amazing teacher. You'll read 3 books and write papers on them, have quizzes based on the textbook, and occasional online responses. A solid choice.
Dr. Brasher is an amazing professor. Not only does he know so much about history, but he is able to teach in a way that is effective and enjoyable. I looked forward to his class more than any other I took this semester. His tests are definitely not easy and require a good amount of studying. I highly recommend taking one of Dr. Brasher's classes.
Lecture heavy, knowledgable about the topics. Pushes liberal political agenda and constantly bashes any other political party. Tough grader and does not care about his students.
Did not choose this professor as it got changed like the day before class. the lectures were dry and your hands will hurt from taking notes. You have to explain history HIS way or you fail. He cares more about the effect than the facts. Quizzes were stupid hard. So were his tests. Your grade is based off of the test, so thats why I failed
Dr. Brasher is an amazing lecturer. He made history very enjoyable. He doesn't post lectures or notes online so attending class is necessary. He gives reading quizzes at least once a week and they are very difficult. His tests count for the majority of your grade and they are crazy hard. If you don't have every detail correct he will mark it wrong.
Brasher was very welcoming when I went to his office to ask for help. He figured out what I was doing wrong, and helped me correct it in a way that will change how I deal with all my classes in the future. Very supportive and caring professor.
He gives pretty tough tests and expects a lot from you on them, but they're weighted more the each time. His lectures are very heavy so I'd suggest recording them and not missing class. If you work hard, making an A is doable.
He is a very tough grader, he is very curt with his replies and feedback, and no matter how good your essays or assignments are written, if it is not up to his standards, you will receive a harsh grade. Also, don't ever forget to cite your sources.
He makes west civ interesting! His exams are a little difficult and he takes pop quizzes too, but we didn't have to write papers or have to write huge essays on our exams. Good notes are a must.
His exams are very challenging, even if you take great notes. The exams are based solely on his lectures and the themes associated with them. The lectures themselves are really interesting. Beware of his reading quizzes and try to read the chapter at least twice. These occur once a week and are more challenging than he leads on.
Best Instructor at UA! I had Dr. Brasher for HY's-101, 3, & 4. Knows the material by heart. Lectures are very interesting. Also has a great sense of humor! WILL be taking his class again. Participate, Respect Him, Talk Sports w/ him (anything Bama). 200 character limit on here doesn't do him justice, UA needs to make him a Professor ASAP!
I love this professor so much. He is a total nerd about history. I genuinely LEARNED the material in this class and fell in love with so many new aspects of history. Dont get him started on Game of Thrones though, he wont be able to stop! Love this guy!
Dr. Brasher is a great lecturer. He makes it very interesting and easy to pay attention to. However, there are pop quizzes that will knock your grade down, he rarely will let anyone get 100s, and I have found that he sometimes will distort facts to push a political agenda, particularly left-leaning. Great teacher, but beware tough grading and bias.
You do not need to buy the book unless you just want to. He gives black board responses that occasionally need the book to reference but online research would suffice. I actually enjoy his lectures, but be aware that he gives 12 pop quizzes and they are very specific. I took his honors course and there was a lot of writing on exams but I recommend
Very harsh grader. He has standards set in his mind and if you don't meet them, your grade will show you. Offers very little feedback on papers but grades them very harshly. If you don't go to lecture, the tests will seem like they're in a foreign language. This is a 100 level course but is treated like a 300 level course, so be prepared.
Dr. Brasher is one of my favorite professors at Alabama, I've taken two of his classes. You'll definitely remember what you learn in his class. His lectures are engaging, entertaining, & always welcomes questions. I've seen a lot of people say he's a tough grader, take GOOD notes & you'll be fine. Be sure to study the conclusions of each lecture.
Awesome teacher, and really helpful if you set up a time to meet with him. Lectures are interesting, but very specific and hard quizzes on a stupid book suck and bring your grade down. Tests are hard too as they are mostly free response and he's very picky. If you miss class you NEED to get notes from someone else. Highly respect Dr. Brasher!!
Dr. Brasher is a very intelligent man and super into history! His lectures are lengthy, so take good notes and make sure you have his arguments in there as well because he asks about it on the tests! Does have outside assignments, but they're designed to help your grade so just do them! Very respectful of his students and wants them to succeed!
I don't think I've ever learned as much in any class in my life as I did in this one. He knows the material by heart and listening to him lecture is like listening to someone telling you a story. That being said, it was one of the hardest I've ever had to work for an A. If you go to every class and take detailed notes you'll love it.
quizzes and tests were stupid hard. he doesnt care about his students. 40% of your grade is tests. be prepared to tear out 4 pages of loose leaf for each exam. your hand will hurt from writing so i recommend using your computer. no study guides. if your essay doesnt exactly match his conclusion from the lecture it wont count. good luck charlie...
He says he drops the 3 lowest quiz grades but never actually does. SOo much note taking that your hand will cramp the heck up and fall asleep. Gave a quiz on Thanksgiving break when like legit 5 people came to class out of 40.
I am in upper-level classes for my major, and they were not this level of difficulty. He is honestly a great guy and you can tell he loves what he does but he gives a lot for a 100 level class. His pop quizzes are stupid hard, no study guide, so we don't know what to study out of the piles of notes, and the tests seem to be a battle to pass.
As long as you pay attention in class, you'll be fine. He definitely has a very routine and kind of bland way of doing things, especially since this is a low-level class, but he's a funny guy and his lectures are never boring by any means. He'll grade you for effort on writing assignments, and his test questions are pulled straight from the notes.
Glenn Brasher is a great teacher. You must take really good notes and study them to do well in his class. He gives pop quizzes usually once a week. He lectures all of class so its a lot of writing but you truly learn a lot of interesting material. As long as you're willing to do the work you won't regret taking his class.
Dr. Brasher is very knowledgeable and good at making the lectures interesting. However, for a 100 level course he is a really tough grader. You have to know super-specific details for tests and quizzes. I am typically an A/A+ student and I worked my butt off for a B+. If you want to keep your 4.0 do not take it.
Very passionate about his lectures and delivers them really well. There are so many extra things in his class through the week that you have to stay on your toes for. Would be difficult to keep up with everything if you didnt like history or had other hard classes.
Best history class I've ever taken, Brasher knows the material so well and is very passionate about it. Classes are all notes, but his lectures are interesting. His quizzes are ridiculously specific and you have to really know the material to do well on tests, but I have learned more in this class than any other college class thus far. Recommend!
Dr. Brasher has been the best lecturer I've ever had. He made the material easy to memorize and interesting as well. I wish he was offering the follow-up course in the fall.
The best professor and class that I have had at UA!! 11/10!! He tells American History like a captivating story and shows you why it matters. No powerpoint slides were given; participation and good note taking are musts. One of the more difficult classes I have had, but there is so much enjoyment that you will want to put in effort. Take this class
He's really a sweet guy and cares about his students. Be prepared to take detailed notes, as his tests are based solely on the lectures. He can be a tough grader, but as long as you come to the same conclusions as him in his lectures in your essay questions, you'll be fine. If you're really struggling, reach out to him. He gives great feedback.
Dr. Brasher is a wonderful man to learn from, if youre really willing to listen and TAKE GOOD NOTES. The lectures are very dense, but because of that theyre full of good information. His weekly reading quizzes are pretty easy and fun. Overall Id highly recommend taking this class, I just wish he taught the second part of US History.
I took Dr. Brasher's HY107 course. Overall, I learned a lot, but he is a very tough grader when it comes to essays and tests. I was usually fairly prepared for the tests, but it is really important to come to class! If you're prepared to work for your A, this class is for you.
Dr. Brasher really knows the material; his lectures are interesting. Take good notes! His conclusions are very important; you will see them on the test! He repeats them several times; write them down. Fair grader, very clear about what is due & when. Drops 4 lowest quiz grades & gives 2nd chance on Current Events & PSA's
Do not take this professor! Makes class hard for no reason. Man needs to realize that he is teaching a 100 level class and that no one is taking the class because they want to be there. Will have class even when the university closes.
I wish that 0 was a rating because out of all of my teachers and professors that I've ever had he is by far the worse. Teaches more of opinions than facts and gives assignments that make little to no sense. There are plenty of other great professors for this class that make you interested in the material, he is anything but that. Very very boring!
I am in 300 level courses right now and this class is by far the hardest most complicated class that I have ever taken during college. If no other teachers are available, I HIGHLY recommend taking another semester. If you do wind up with him, be prepared to spend hours daily working on this class! Good luck lol
Guy teaches strictly off of opinion and includes the most boring lectures that I've ever sat through. Pay attention because he will call you out and ask random questions. He tries to make a fool of his students. 0/5**
Class is absurd for a 100 level. I am a 4.0 over multiple semesters and study my butt off for this class and its still an absolute grind. This should be for majors. Tests you on completely arbitrary details rather than actual material. Its like historical trivia.
Gives quizzes every week on an article that has material that he has not gone over. All tests and quizzes are mostly fill in the blank. Not a nice guy and is terrible.
This is my only class that is not 300 level or higher and is by far my hardest class. He is very passionate about what he teaches and expects his students to have the same passion and understanding of it. His tests are ridiculously specific and made up of unimportant details instead of a more broad overview, which is the purpose of this class.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Brasher and the course. Great lectures! Very caring, funny, and down-to-earth guy. We all were aware that he had some health issues this semester, but he always kept informed and connected and did not neglect the class. I will definitely look to take his class again in the future.
Not an easy class, for sure, but Brasher is a very passionate and a good lecturer. I loved coming to class and he is friendly and talkative. A very interesting class in which he explains everything like a story.
He is a very tough grader. He doesnt care if you know the history, you have to know if in his exact terminology in order to pass. I took all AP history courses in HS and got an A+ in HY103 and this was a real struggle. Basically you have to memorize how he says things to pass.
Ehhhh not a great professor. Just doesn't seem to care that much about students and his class is centered completely around lectures. He's very strict about phone use in class and very stubborn when it comes to rules and grades. Class was extremely difficult, which is unnecessary for a basic level history class.
One of my best experiences at UA was taking his U.S. history course. He's funny, knows his stuff, and cares. I bombed the first test, but I went to him for advice and he spent much time talking to me about how to best study for the course. It worked. I learned so much and came to a better appreciation of the value of history. Take Dr. Brasher!
This was an incredibly easy class. As long as you show up and take good notes on the specifics and listen well, you can make an A+ easily. He tells you in class a lot of what specifically will be on the exam and prepares you well for them.
I really liked his class, but if you aren't someone who wants to attend class you won't pass. He usually has a powerpoint but its usually just a couple topics listed and then he talks about those topics, so you can't get the powerpoints if you missed. That being said, he's really sweet and passionate. Will let you resubmit the HW if you did it wron
Dr. Brasher is a brilliant teacher. I learned a lot in his class, but it was no easy A. He makes you work for it, but if you go to class, it's a lot easier. He's very accessible outside of the classroom and cares about his students. I would very highly recommend taking him, he's engaging and his lectures are interesting, but be prepared to work!
You will not get an A plus in this class. He says straight on the syllabus that he will not give you one. He gave me a 96 on every paper and test because it is just under an A plus, and when I asked him why he took points off, he gave no real answer. It's completely subjective.
Dr. Brasher is an amazing professor. He is extremely passionate and it shows during his lectures. His exams are very difficult, if you don't go to lectures or take good notes, you will not pass. The rest of the work is very short and simple. I wouldn't recommend Brasher if you intend to not pay attention. I personally fully enjoy his classes.
I've taken Dr. Brasher three times, and have gotten an A+ all three times. I have friends that did as well, so take that for what it is worth when you see certain claims in other reviews of Dr. Brasher. His classes are tough, no doubt, but he's very cool, knows his stuff and his lectures are always interesting and sometimes fun. I'd give him an A+
ALL class EVERY class you listen to him lecture with just few bullet points on the screen. You'll end up with an absurd amount of notes for each test just for the test questions to be about something minor that happened. Very hard for no reason considering its the base history class here at UA.
Dr. Brasher is THE MAN. Loved his class . I always looked forward to his interesting lectures. The dude knows how to tell a story. Tough tests, but the other assignments were easy points and actually fun sometimes. wish I could take one of his classes again.
Brasher is my favorite professor I've had. The class is hard but if you're a history major it will be perfect, best lectures I've ever heard. If you want him to like you talk about Alabama sports. I've only taken his honors courses and as long as you study a lot for each test you'll be fine
Took Dr. Brasher for HY 103 and 104. Loves what he talks about and knows nearly everything he teaches. There are quiz readings and writing prompts but as long as you read the section and use the book for the prompts you'll do just fine. Tests are exactly what he teaches in the lectures, no surprise questions. Great teacher overall!
Glenn was actually the worst. Avoid taking a class w this man at all costs. I didn't have a very nice computer so I sometimes struggled with the assignments and he was no help at all, he would tell me I am just gonna have to take a 0 on all of them so I had to drop. he sucks
Dr. Brasher is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. He is lecture heavy so you need to be prepared to take good notes but he is amazing! You can tell he knows what he's talking about and he's passionate about it. 14 quizzes (3 drop) 2 tests and final (online) if you go 2 every class you get 10 ec points. take him!! no essays at all
I wasn't a huge history buff but he makes it quite interesting and really knows his stuff. That being said, its a lot of work, if you aren't willing to try, and I mean really try, don't take his class. If you want to do well, skipping is not an option and I cannot stress enough how important notes are. Lectures are not posted you have to be there.
Brasher gets a bad rep but i actually really enjoyed his class. history has always came easy to me and i love it but i did have to put a little bit of effort into his class. he gives 14 quizzes with 3 drops but check your syllabus regualarly because he will not tell you when the quiz is. 2 tests 1 final not cumulative, but lock down browser.
Dr. Brasher is extremely smart and dedicated to his work. I'm not going to lie, the class is hard for a history class, but I've learned so much because of his lectures. He makes them so interesting and over time I've actually enjoyed going to class. You have to go to class and take really good notes but yeah great guy
Dr. Brasher lectures for the entire class time, but he is extremely knowledgable and you will learn so much from him. If you're genuinely interested in learning something, take his class. There are weekly quizzes but he drops four of them and gives 100s on the assignments as long as you do them. Take good notes because he doesn't post them.
I'll start by saying that he is a fantastic lecturer. That said, he grades ridiculously harshly; you must answer incredibly specifically in just the way he described it or you wont get credit. Must be able to take good notes. Frustrating how particular he is on tests and quizzes.
Dr. Brasher's class was one of the most time consuming that I have taken at UA. He is heavy on lectures and incredibly strict on grading. If you do not show up to class, you will not succeed in this class. His lectures are the entire class, so do not take if you are going to have to miss. He is not afraid to give you a 0.
I've taken a course with him 3 times and loved them all, especially his class on Abraham Lincoln! His lectures are engaging and frequently funny. Yes, tests are tough, but you'll learn a ton. He loves to talk, and has given me a lot of great advice during my time at UA. He cares. If you're around in the summer, definitely take his Lincoln class.
Dr. Brasher is amazing. I have learned so much from taking his classes. He knows what he is talking about, and that is very clear from his lectures. Attendance and taking notes are important, as he doesn't post notes online. Be prepared to study, but it is all worth it for the amazing quality of his lectures and how much you actually learn.
Dr. Brasher is great! there are 14 quizzes and 4 of them get dropped (its a weekly reading) and he uses the best 10. Only two tests and then the final. You HAVE to go to lecture or you will not perform well at all on tests. Questions directly from lecture. He does not post slides. Takes attendance but 10 bonus points if you never miss lecture!
One of the toughest graders I've encountered in college, would leave snarky comments as feedback on assignments, and was awful with emails; either he didn't respond or was super rude.
Lectures the whole time til the very last minute. One of the hardest graders I've encountered at UA. He has very few assignments so the majority of ur grade is just tests let alone these tests are extremely hard. He's also pretty rude. Doesn't care ab doctors' notes either. Got the flu 2x that semester & he counted those absences against my grade.
Literally do not take this mans class. Its like he wants you to fail. By the end of the semester most people drop its so bad
Best professor I have ever had. He's a tough grader and does not put up with much nonsense, but he clearly knows his stuff and is a great lecturer and also tries hard to get students talking to each other. Take his class!
One of the hardest teachers I have ever had. Strict grader with assignments that don't make much sense. Going to class at 9 am MWF was so hard. Need to go to class to pass, you will literally fail if you don't go. Doesn't care at all about anyone that has a learning disability or ODS accommodations through UA. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Do NOT take him. I have never had a worse professor. His assignments were easy, but he grades his tests insanely ridiculous. If you don't put the answer exactly as he said it in class, then you don't get credit. Seriously, save your grade and choose anyone else.
Best lecturer I've ever had at UA and I enjoyed going to class. Tough test, but the other assignments were easy and kept my grade up. He also loves conversation, so it is pretty easy getting him off script and talking about really interesting things. Great class.
While Dr. Brasher's classes require a great deal of time, reading, and mandatory attendance, his excellent lectures and his obvious love for his job and his students make it worthwhile. Lectures are well-organized and engaging. VISIT HIS OFFICE HOURS. He gives excellent feedback on assignments/class performance and loves to get to know students.
Best lecturer I've ever heard at UA. It was a fun class. Take it!
His lectures were very interesting, but his test are extremely hard and he grades them tough. Studying the notes I took during the lecture did not help me on the test considering the questions were so hard.
Dr Brasher is a great lecturer. He turns history into a story that's unfolding as the class progresses and has some dry humor in his lectures. However his tests are pretty hard and unless you go to every lecture and take good notes, you won't do well. The quizzes also required a lot of reading and were difficult at times. Attendance was mandatory.
The quiz is every week, however, it is easy if you read the reading. He is the type of Professor to have a couple of things on the board but recalls most of the information from memory. I am not saying this is a bad thing, but is a good thing because it shows he knows what he is talking about. If you go to all lectures he gives 10 extra credits.
He is the best professor I've had. He makes clear what you're being graded on, and you have plenty of things that will give you A even if you dont do well on the tests. You have to put in the effort but the class is really interesting and he's a great story teller.
Brasher is a good guy and means well but the way he teaches the class and gives work is terrible. He doesn't post any lecture material and just babbles the entire class expecting you to take notes, which you must rely on to do well on the test. he has quizzes on material he does not go over in class and you have to read up on. Made me hate history
He knows his history and listening to lectures is similar to listening to a story about history. Trying to take notes was a lot. He assigns writing assignments but doesn't give a clear idea of what he really wants you to write about and has a lot of restrictions which makes it almost impossible to find an article to review that he will except.
I'm taking his online Abraham Lincoln class right now and it is amazing. He is a great storyteller and I have learned much about old Abe that has busted many of the ideas I had before the class. The course forces you to do some deep thinking and I love that. I hope I can take some of Brasher's other classes.
He just talks the entire time and expects you to take notes on everything he says without having a detailed powerpoint. You have to read articles and take quizzes on them every week and they are hard... you read a lot it's boring he made me hate history more.
The professor knows their stuff, but lectures are tough and tests are challenging. Attendance is a must, so be prepared to take detailed notes. Unstuck AI and the textbook can be lifesavers, but expect to put in the work. Overall, a rewarding class if you're up for the challenge.
I think that Dr. Brasher means well and I enjoy his lectures, but he makes this class much more difficult and time consuming than it should be. Attendance is ABSOLUTELY mandatory because he does not post notes and you NEED them to do well on the test. MUST write down all assignments in advance because he does not tell you when assignments are due.
Dr. Brasher is arguably the best lecturer I have ever had here at UA; he's an amazing storyteller and clearly knows his stuff. If you're willing to show up to class, take notes, and learn history it should not be a problem at all. His tests are hard but he does give you everything you need for them and his office hours are super helpful.
Professor Brasher places a strong emphasis on attendance, making it clear that he values consistent engagement in class. His grading is rigorous, the feedback provided can sometimes feel overly critical, adding unnecessary pressure. I learned a lot in this class, however I would recommend taking another teacher if you aren't the best student.
Brasher is an awesome lecturer who knows what he's talking about However a really tough grader a lot of the times if you don't say exactly what he wants, you'll be wrong Three tests online lockdown browser camera 14 quizzes drop 4 some in person some online 6 writing assignments which can be tough but you can resubmit Only Take if you like history
Overall I think Professor Brasher means well, but he is an incredibly tough grader. If you don't put exactly what he is looking for he will give you a zero. There are 6 assignments, 14 reading quizzes, and 3 exams. He will give you a zero for the assignments if you don't do it right, but you can resubmit for a 100%. Don't take him if you can.
Professor Brasher is knowledgeable but a tough grader with specific expectations. If you don't meet them, you'll get a zero. The course includes 6 assignments, 14 quizzes, and 3 exams. If you're looking for lenient grading, this isn't the class for you. His lectures can be hard to stay awake in.
The class is word vomit the whole 50 minutes, and personally I didn't comprehend half the notes because I'm too busy trying to type. You're taking 4 pages of notes every class, so add up how many notes you'll have to study between tests. He sends back work over & over if you don't word it exactly how he wants all semester. The list goes on...
He has an attendance grade, but Brasher is a great lecturer that keeps your interest. Best part of the class is that he gives you unlimited chances to resubmit your assignment grades until they are perfect 100s. I struggled on the tests, but the 100s allowed me to pull out a great grade. Fun class.
He is super passionate and knowledgeable, but the class is a ton of work and he can be a strict grader. There is the ability to resubmit the writing assignments as well as some extra credit opportunities and he did round my final grade up. History here in general is all hard so its hard to tell if its just the class or him that was difficult.
Very passionate teacher, but is one of the hardest graders I have ever had. He grades based off of 3 tests, quizzes once a week, writing assignments, and attendance. Lots of notes. Regardless of his hard grading, he is very understanding and will help you outside of class. If you show up and do the work, it will pay off. He will reward you for that
Prof Brasher is a pretty cool guy who is passionate about history. He does grade assignments kind of hard and will repeatedly send them back (for full credit) if you don't write what he wants you to. He gives reading quizzes that you HAVE to read for. Lots of notes. He moves kind of fast. Will use ALL of class time. Read and show up to be okay.
Avoid this professor at all costs. DO NOT TAKE HIM. DO NOT. DO NOT. I have always been a smart student but he is actually impossible. Havent. got above a 60% on any of his tests. He grades like nothing ive ever seen before. DONT TAKE HIM NO MATTER WHAT. He has made me cry several times, because he is so stubborn.
Terrible professor who is full of himself. Large readings every other day that are quizzed weekly. He grades essays and Tests extremely harsh with no remorse. DO NOT TAKE.
don't. don't. don't. don't. don't.
really bad professor
Love dr Brasher. This was the best history class I have ever had because he is such a good lecturer.
If you are trying to actually learn more about history and understand the context for history, this is the professor for you . However, If you are trying to take an easy pre req this class may become overwhelming . Great and entertaining lectures ,however does grade very harshly so it is important to really study if taking this course.
Dr. Brasher is a nice man, an interesting lecturer, and funny. I looked forward to coming to his class all semester and learned way more than I thought I would. I definitely hope I get to take another of his courses.
Great professor who is the best lecturer I've had at UA. He's funny, interesting, and cares. I've had him for several classes, but his Abe Lincoln class is especially worth your time.
Passionate & knowledgeable! Funny & interesting lectures. Tests each have 2 essay questions worth 20 pts so make sure you pay attention and study if you want to pass. It is definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken, but he's a great professor.
His lectures are very interesting, but he doesn't post nor have lecture notes.. He basically just talks to you during class and you have to write down everything he says. The test are solely on what he says during class time so its important that you go to class. There are quizzes very frequently (once, sometimes twice a week.)
I have previously rated Dr. Brasher, but after starting American HY 2 with another professor -- I have even more respect for how he teaches. Amazing professor. He tells you EVERYTHING you need to know, and lectures are easy to take notes on- just write literally every word he says. I wish I had him for American History 2.
