Cannot recommend him enough. You can tell that he loves what he does and his energy in lectures is very contagious. Make sure you take your own notes because most of what he goes over is not on his slides.
He a prof that really makes you enjoy what you're learning. So much fun listening to and even better when you speak to him personally! Most of his lecture slide have very little text and were mostly images so it necessary to go to his lecture but he is so helpful when you ask him questions. Definitely a prof I'll take another class with! =)
I had him last semester for GLGY 201. He's an amazing prof, extremely helpful, really keeps the class engaged makes 50 minutes go by really fast. He's a " verbal" teacher meaning most of his contents are explained rather than put on PPT so attending class is mandatory. Cant wait to have him for another semester!
He is an amazing prof and I would recommend him to anyone and I would definitely take another class with him. He is very helpful, enthusiastic, and teaches in a different way that makes you excited to learn. I recommend taking down notes or printing off the slides and adding additional comments he makes. Favourite prof by far!
Dr.Dolphin is the coolest prof ever! It takes a while to get used to his sometimes unorganized, mostly verbal yet highly enthusiastic lectures! make sure you attend class and take notes as his lectures are mostly verbal! If you put in a little effort in this class, your guaranteed at least a B+
Fantastic professor. Super enthusiastic and very interested in his students. Teaching style is unique, and some may not like it, but it's super memorable. Didn't read the textbook once and did pretty solid.
I had a few different professors for GLGY 201 throughout the semester and out of all of them, Glenn Dolphin was the best. He is clear, enthusiastic, and gives out many key points about what you should know or not. Probably one of my favorite prof's. VERY ENTHUSIASTIC, helps you memorize content well!
Amazing prof - one of the best I've had. He makes coming to class very fun and he has a lot of good advice to give. Really wants the best for his students, plus he's very easy on the eyes.
Very enthusiastic and can actively engage a class! His lectures are exciting. Knows his stuff. Only small critique is that sometimes, I would not know what I should take notes on, and what I should just listen to and absorb. Overall, great professor who is highly respected.
do not recommend, his tests were very ambiguous with all of the above and none of the above as options for most of the test, he believes himself to be a teaching master but is extremely inexperienced and overconfident resulting in unbalanced tests, naive lab assignments, and a misconstrued portrayal of what the course should actually cover
Extremely underqualified for the job, and he tries to make it up by being overly enthusiastic. His interests are obvious and very narrow and limited to just being adored as a lecturer and therefore the labs and tests he makes are riddled with ambiguity which the student suffers for, even if they have a good understanding of the topic. Not reccom.
Glenn Dolphin is one of the worst profs i have experienced in university. He tries to be very funny to make up for his lack of teaching. His lecture notes are photos that do not relate to the test. DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL.
He always says "Take charge of your learning". Well if thats the way he thinks how learning occurs then why are we paying so much to sit in lectures and hear him babble about topics that aren't related to the course? Or to see completely absurd and unrelated stuff in the exam? Avoid!!!
He isn't very clear on what he want you to know for the course. In fact, he doesn't really tell you much at all. He just teaches a little bit about the subject material and assumes that everyone will go home and spend 2 hours reading the textbook, teaching themselves the material and then write impossible midterm and finals. He's a nice guy though.
"Hippy" way of teaching , expect you to learn on your own. Test questions absurd and hard to understand and has very little to do with content of the lectures.
Worst prof ever. The midterm average was very low. His jokes are very rude and makes up excuses to why he won't curve the marks. Class average was very low. Do not recommend.
Glenn was an amazing prof! The GLGY 202 exams are based on lecture notes and reading comprehension skills. I ended up with a 53% on the midterm, but looking over it, I just wasn't reading the questions properly. He has great, inter-active lectures and truly cares about creating an interesting course. He is willing to help you if you just ask!
Avoid at all costs!!! Glenn was extremely rude and disrespectful to students and made excuses to why marks were not curved. The class average for test were extremely low. He does not help when you go to his office hours and shares his personal experience to why he didn't do good expecting us to relate to him.
No. Just no.
I took this class as a science option and it was great! However, you do have to know how to take good notes and I do recommend printing out the ppts because he teaches using pictures as examples. His exams were very easy but his grammar is terrible, so definitely ask questions during the exam about what the questions mean if you're confused.
Did not enjoy whatsoever. Found Dr. Dolphin to be very rude to students, especially when answering emails. His lectures were all over the place and not helpful at all. He tests on material that is not in the lectures or in the textbook, so you have to do extra research. Best method for tests? Literally memorize the book.
Glenn Dolphin must be avoided at all cost. He is extremely rude and somewhat childish. His test are very ambiguous and does not give proper instructions on what will be on it. His lectures are just photos and he does not explain them well at all. He is not helpful during office hours. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
Powerpoints are pointless. His lectures are all over the place, and his attempt to engage students is forced. Also was very patronizing. That being said, it was an easy class... if you spend time deciphering what he was talking about and then referencing the textbook. The textbook is a lifesaver in this class.
Really energetic, but only had for 1/3 of the classes. Starts class with music everytime. Really focuses on being able to apply knowledge. His slides aren't the greatest, so show up to class so he can explain his slides to you. Make sure you do some extra work just to make sure you cover everything, as he does not.
Taught 1/3 of the class with 2 other profs who were much more experienced. He doesnt even hold a geology degree, he holds a degree in "teaching geology" which is useless since he CANT teach it! Absurd analogies, slightly patronizing with questions-you can tell which ones he wrote. AVOID IF YOU CAN
Dr. Dolphin (in my opinion, anyways) stepped his game up from GLGY 201. In 202, he used prezi to allow students to mind map ideas together, and had actual words in the presentations (that must be a first). He presented engaging videos to the class to help us understand concepts, and allowed students access to summaries of each lecture as well.
Honestly, by far one of the best Prof's I've had thus far in University. He caters toward actually learning the material instead of giving full notes, which is what you are coming to university to do (I hope). Really good lecturer and may come off as harsh in responses in times but he seems to mean it with the best intent. Dolphin, what a guy )
Great teacher! He really knows how to engage the class in his lectures. His presentations are unorthodox but super engaging. If you like taking notes you won't like him, his lectures are more meant for listening and learning rather than mindless note writing. He makes class interesting which is something no other prof can seem to do.
Strange, and goes on tangents about everything. This class is for art students trust me.
What a joke. He caters to a very specific group of individuals, those who are creative and learn through story telling. He "wrote" his own textbook and half the chapters weren't available to us since it was an online text. He also loves group work, despite the fact that the class had over 400 people in it, not really the approach I would have taken
Alot of people really hate his class but he designed GLGY 209 for non-science majors so it makes sense why it was so ridiculously easy. He really engaged and taught in a way that didnt require us to just sit and write notes; and by this, i mean group work. I didnt find this class boring at all.
Not your typical Geology class, who knew learning was fun
dont take his glgy 209 class if you actually wanna do some geology. only thing this guy talks about is everything but geology. he'll cover psychology, biology, chemistry, etc. he even loses your midterms if you dont watch out. the positive thing is that if youre tired of his lectures just skip it, all the assessments are in group anyway, final too.
If you have zero interest in any sciences, this is the class for you. Glenn vehemently rejects the scientific method and his textbook is an atrocious scam. I don't feel as though I have learned anything about geology. As well, he places people in groups, which is the worst experience of my educational career thus far. Avoid at all costs.
Disorganized. Pointless lectures. Incomplete textbook. Lots of group work. You will not learn anything about geology from Glenn Dolphin.
If you like geology do not take this course. Most of the material is related to history, marketing, chemistry basically everything that is NOT geology. He has a very unconventional teaching style but group assignments were fairly easy and group tests certainly help your grade. I would recommend this class as a gpa booster elective and nothing more
Great person, enthusiastic, but unfortunately I didn't actually learn anything in class, making the tests very difficult to study for and the group projects pretty much depend on whether or not you get a good group. Difficult to get an A in his class, but easy to get a C+ or B. Just be prepared for a gong-show.
I thought he was a great prof! Very enthusiastic and broke down the material in a simplistic manner. For someone who won't purse a career in geology, I took this course not expecting too much. But I actually enjoyed and definitely considered it a GPA booster.
This class is entertaining and is definitely for non science majors, however every single assignment(6 short assignments, 1 long one), both midterms and even the final are done in group work. If you're not okay with letting your entire grade depend on 5 or 6 strangers, I highly recommend you don't take this course. Coordinating 6 schedules is awful
His class is a gong show. Your mark depends on the group he assigns you. His textbook isn't available at any u of c library, so you have to buy it. Tests are impossible to study for. It's hard to tell what he is teaching and what is a tangent because everything seems like a tangent. Teaches you everything but geology. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE.
Everything is done in groups. You're entire mark will depend on the group you are assigned. If you actually enjoy science DO NOT take this course. He talks about everything but science. I honestly haven't even learned a single thing about geology. The good thing is its an easy class. Do you're assignments and you'll pass with flying colours
Passionate but can go off on tangents. There were lots of group projects and if you skip class youre screwed
The course is fine, but the lab exams are brutally difficult. Not even the TA's can tell how to identify all the minerals in a rock sample, so when your test is almost entirely based on that you're bound to fail.
The lab exams were really difficult for an introductory class .
Guy is the nicest prof and always has more energy than I ever do. Tests are kinda weird but if you read the book you should be fine.
Glenn was very entertaining during lectures however, I found it somewhat difficult to stay focused on the material because he went sooo slowly and went off topic very often. The labs were always ahead of the lectures so we would have to teach ourselves all of the material going into each one which was very annoying, and my particular TA was useless
Your mark depends on your group. If you get a poor group, you're in for a tough semester. The tests are really hard because they are "thinking questions" that don't test you on facts, and the wording on them is confusing and unclear. His marking rubrics are also vague.
Glenn Dolphin is the best. He is funny and enthusiastic about everything he teaches. The bad reviews on here, in my opinion, are unfair because this is a Rocks for Jocks type of class, not a class for someone majoring in a science. The assignments and final are done in groups, it's fair to say that this is probably the easiest and best class.
If you're looking to take Rocks for Jocks DONT TAKE IT WITH GLENN. The entire course is done in a group that you're randomly assigned so if you're in a bad group then forget about getting an A in this class. Tests are hard and poorly worded. What you get on your group assessments is a multiplier of your final grade which is stupid.
If you take this class take it KNOWING it is a class that has group work and is not a typical science class. If you get a good group (if), then you're probably fine. Don't all buy the textbook, just have one person buy it and split the cost. The projects are easy as are the exams. This is a class very much for NON-SCIENCE majors.
If you take this course, go in knowing you are randomly placed in a group. If you have a good group, that's great but if you end up in a bad group you are doomed for the rest of the semester. Glenn is nice, replies to emails really quick. This is not an easy A course. Your group assessment mark affects your final grade, so get along with your group
He's a good guy
Like this Prof! He can go off on tangents but it's fun to watch. Class is not for Geology majors so information is more conceptual then statistical. Everything's group work but over all the assignments are easy and the exams are even in groups making them easier. The importance is getting along with group as everything is done together for 4 mths..
Makes you buy a textbook that he wrote himself which has nothing to do with glgy. Makes you write chapters for it which he will make money off of. Makes you do everything in groups which is nice for exams but screws you over for projects. Doesn't believe in science and spends the entire class talking about how the scientific method is wrong.
The fact that group assessments act as a universal multiplier is a joke, I got over 100 in some assignments and others got below 80 when we got a 90 group mark. Not to mention the end of the year exam has so many subjective multiple choice questions it's unreal. You will need the textbook for the fictional stories that contain tested material.
Yes, he goes off tangents. But this man is seriously the most entertaining guy! He plays Pink Floyd before class, one he stripped (not completely) for a demonstration, I mean, his name is Dolphin. How cool is that?! You do have to read and memorize a lot however he is very captivating so it is easy to listen to the lectures and retain information
Starts every lecture with classic rock and belongs in Cirque du Soleil. Really cares about success of students.
He starts class by playing classic rock music but often strays off topic. The lab midterm was very difficult from the perspective of a first-year student.
This is probably one of the most poorly taught geology classes. This class is littered with odd personal anecdotes and subtle political opinions which appear on the midterm. There is a lot of irrelevance in lectures to the materials and what you need to know. The second half of the semester gets you deeper into actual geology. Must read the book!
Cool guy with a great sense of humour. Always starts the class with classic music. Anyway... this guy can get off topic and there have been a few lectures where it was a complete waste of time. Furthermore, the midterm was extremely hard; half was textbook base and the other half is "what they think of Geology" which is completely irrelevant to geo
Professor Dolphin has got to be one of the best profs at UofC. I only attended one lecture but god damn that was the best lecture I have ever been to. The guy is a comedic genius and if he gets fired for having such a low rating I wouldn't be surprised if SNL picked him up. Be ready to listen to his rants and read the textbook.
He's a really great teacher, and he really simplified the lectures so that it was easy to follow along. He is very good at grasping the attention of the audience. A very fun and approachable person.
Midterm and final questions were very subjective and the majority of questions had weird wording and weren't really relevant or discussed in class. There was absolutely no structure. PowerPoint slides were cryptic and disorganized. He is a really weird prof.
Very interesting class. Wish Glenn taught the whole thing though. Love his shirts and enthusiasm. Too much memorization for me though.
Great guy and its always a pleasure to attend every one of his classes. On the down side he is horrible at providing the proper information in order to do well on the tests, Unless u study SUPER hard, which lets be honest not many people are taking geo majors. Finished 1% below a B- and could not bump up the mark even tho this is an intro course.
He is the worst professor for this class. Try to take it with another prof or take physics because that will probably be the less dreadful option. If you can teach yourself that's great because don't expect too much. The tests are both lecture and textbook but no one really knows whats happening.
I will never take a class from this prof again. Lectures are unfocused, unclear and misguided. He thinks that his teaching is very knowledgeable, which may be true if only he knew how to teach. Stay away. Seems like a nice guy though, I'll give him that.
I don't understand why everyone is giving this wonderful man such horrible reviews. He is extremely clear with what he expects. He knows his info inside and out. He is super helpful and caring. He gives a bunch of examples to ensure that everyone understands. Definitely an easy A. 10/10 would recommend.
his dancing? on point his excitement about rocks? go glenn his course outline? needs some revising-majorly his assignments? easy peasy the class as a whole is pretty dam easy
He wants you to be creative. This class is such a waste of time and required way too much effort for what the course was worth. A LOT of group projects with random assigned groups. Tests are still difficult even when done in groups. Skipped most of the lectures. Online textbook for $98 Canadian that he wrote himself. Course was not worth it.
Glenn is a well-intentioned prof. He really wants to help students with course material and wants to help students understand it better. His head is very much in the clouds and the content seems to be quite lofty. If you hate LOTS of group projects and you're looking for "rocks for jocks" this might not be the course for you.
Dr. Dolphin is truly an amazingly caring prof and wishes nothing but the best for his students. He is always willing to help you even if youre no longer in his class. He literally told my class that he will always be an email away and can meet up whenever we need help in the future. He is also entertaining and the funniest prof Ive had by far!
I'm honestly not sure how to rate him. On one hand, he's a great guy with a wonderful sense of humour and always brings enthusiasm to lectures (as well as stuffed animals and other props) But on the other hand, I'm honestly not even sure what I learned in his class. It's very hectic and messy. His grading scheme is also very confusing.
ALL GROUP WORK. Shared the textbook with my group. 2 midterms and lots of mini-assignments. My group just used a google doc and worked on it the night before class. Scheduled final but it is a group as well. He cares more about the learning aspect than the testing. His lectures are interesting and easy to follow! Great option for a science elective
His lectures are fun and engaging and he was very caring! The assignments were also marked very fairly. This is a great GPA booster if you are fortunate enough to be placed in a good group. It would be an absolute nightmare if you were unlucky and had a bad group however, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're willing to take that gamble.
I took an introductory geology class with this professor, and it was by far the worst experience as a student. All assignments and tests were done in groups which meant only one person did all the work, and he never taught a single thing about geology. He is a stuck up man who uses his students to rewrite his textbook each year and make money.
This professor gives more work than he can mark. Its the end of the semester marks should be up but my grade book is half empty because he hasnt finished marking. On top of that he says grades shouldnt be taken seriously but marks so hard over small things. He expects us to know beyond course material and his exams are so vague nothing from lec
Glenn himself is knowledgable and enthusiastic, cares about his students. However, everything in the class was done and graded in groups of 6. So prepare to work with people a lot... and to do most of the work yourself. That being said, the assignments are mostly short and easy. Tests are average. Lectures are engaging and well put together.
Expects students to memorize 520 pages ( 13 chapters, avg 40 pages a chapter.) of material for the midterm. Literally sends an email out hours before the midterm adding even more material to read. Everything said is testable. DOES NOT provide study guide nor does he specify what will be on the midterm. RUN FOR THE HILLS AND AVOID THIS CLASS!
Gives no direction for midterm or final exam. Disorganized.
Glenn is pretty funny and for the most part, engaging as a professor. However, he can be very disorganized and rushes through lectures. No clear criteria for the exams, which made them brutal, i don't think anyone knew what we were supposed to study. The labs felt really disjointed from what we were covering, everything was kind of confusing lol.
I loved him at the start, funny and has cool shirts but his material is so disorganized! He does the bare minimum to teach and spends more time trying to be relatable. He loves what he does, but from someone in sciences with a 3.8, he is the worst TEACHER I've had, his tests are so on topic it's surprising since his lectures are not.
Very fun guy. Really horrible prof. The final he wrote up was not completed and as a result many of the criteria was not included. All the questions ended up being solely on the lectures and points that we simply glazed over while the part that was uncompleted was the stuff we focused the entire class on. If you don't have to, don't take this class
The BEST and ONLY advice I can give someone about to take geology 201 with him is to not take it at all. Drop it the first chance you get if you're enrolled. Powerpoints are horrible and disorganized. Midterms and final was so specific and felt like he taught us nothing as the tests were nothing like his lectures. tried very hard but he's terrible.
So so disorganized. Even his office hours are terrible as his office is full of books everywhere on the tables so you can't even put out papers or books on a desk, only your lap or standing up. Unless you're naturally good at school this will be really hard. Read the book and honestly just hope to pass. Labs are also irrelevant to the lectures.
As a science major, this class was difficult. The lectures mainly consisted of him talking about his personal beliefs about geology. His exams were difficult and disorganized. He blames final mishap on the print shop (even though he submitted the document). He believes grades are subjective, saying the main focus of class is to learn...
If you can take Glgy201 with someone else, do. I took this instead of physics but honestly wish I would've taken physics instead. Glenn is nice but he is so disorganized and so are his tests. The midterm covered content that wasn't discussed until after. The only reason I did well in this course was because of the lab and the amazing TA I had.
Glenn is a really good lecturer, it's the tests that are brutal. He doesn't give any outlines as to what's covered on them, and the final definitely did not cover many main points that were emphasized in class. Print errors as well as ambiguous and repeated questions meant 26 questions had to be removed from the final exam, it was a mess.
I appreciate his teaching style, but didn't personally connect with it. Still, not terrible for a 200 level course. Come to class if you actually want to absorb any information. The textbook and doing 'learning assessments' aren't required, but they will help you keep up. If anything, I mostly learned that I really hate rocks.
There were far too many downsides to having him as a instructor. Learning assessments in lectures were of very little use (we were never given corrections). He was very unclear with what we would be tested on. He also really messed up on our exams; there were 23 unanswerable questions (due to incomplete diagrams) which affected grades a fair bit.
Terrible, avoid at all costs.
I think we all know that some people get upset at a prof because they didn't study or do well in a course. Well, this time it's actually true. Everything said on here "he is funny and nice" is true. But the disorganized, worst tests ever, and unclearness is also true. Said marks don't matter yet I got a C+, worst grade by far.
The best prof I've ever had hands down. I learned so much in this course and remember almost everything even two years afterwards. You may struggle if you just expect to be able to gather all the information you need from the slides, but his teaching method prioritizes learning the material rather than parroting it in order to do well on tests.
He does not teach well. Watch out.
Worst teacher I've ever had in 3 years of University. He has no idea how to teach. Says he's trying this "new way of teaching" but in reality its just him being all over the place and making test that are impossible and have absolutely no way to be prepared for. Stay away from this teacher and his classes if you possibly can. So disorganized.
The first L I ever took was on his midterm, and I'm a pretty hardworking student. His exams are a complete mess, he even left the answers ON the test he handed out. He waxes about philosophies of geology but never tells you what specifically to study for. Passionate about his work but not a great teacher.
Glenn overall is a great prof but is unlike most professors. Everything is done in groups (at least fro GLGY 209) so if you get a get a good group then the class is easy. If you get a bad group (the more likely outcome) then you will struggle to get good marks without doing all the work. I did not attend any classes as you can look up everything.
Required text was a $71.40 eBook purchased direct from the publisher that HE WROTE (meaning he got a good share of profits) AND the eBook EXPIRED after a certain amount of time. All of this DURING THE PANDEMIC. Course outline was hap hazard and had no clear schedule or real outline. EXAMS and assignments graded BY GROUPS! DO NOT TAKE. Would give 0
The content in this class is super boring, but Glenn makes it fun and entertaining. The whole class is based on group work so if you get a good/bad group that will determine your grade. Lots of mini projects that are hard to keep up with if you have a busy schedule.
Everything is done in groups. You will most likely have to do all the work yourself if you want a good grade. Glenn means well, but the assignments and lectures are severely disorganized, he doesnt provide proper clarification, and the textbook that he wrote has a ton of typos. Hard to talk to. Condescending. The TA definitely saved the class. Run
Glenn was my first prof for a Geology class and I enjoyed his class. Yes, it is group work but I don't think he should take on the burden of lazy group members. In my course he was always very well organized and seemed to genuinely care about his students which is rare at university. Not an easy A which is probably why people do not like him.
Can't believe the low rating professor Dolphin has! He was the best professor I've ever had. His passion made the lectures enjoyable, and although there was a lot of reading assigned, his lectures covered most of it. All assignments and tests are done in groups, but members are able to evaluate one another. These evaluations affect your mark
The class is entirely group work, and the work itself is really demanding and challenging for a non-science major student. I just quit after finishing the first group work. It's not doable for a student who is not into science.
Professor Dolphin was the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are boring, his tests are super difficult, and his class is based all on group work. He does not care if you're the only one in the group doing work. There is nothing memorable about this class or this professor. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
I took this class in fall 2019 and while he is passionate and accessible outside of class, his tests are horrible, questions are on things he never mentioned in class. I had to take this prof as this class was a degree requirement and he was the only prof but avoid him if you can. The lab exams were brutal too (although labs themselves were fun).
Somehow, as a science teacher, he manged to make his tests incredibly subjective and opinion based. His classes veered in and out of relevant course material, and he would grade on the most obscure things. Very passionate and engaging speaker, however terrible in terms of assessments
He was enthusiastic and passionate which made his lectures entertaining but his tests are hard and weighted high. The textbook he uses is self-written and online- Plus there can be errors found in his uploaded material/assignment descriptions. It is all group work and he is a storyteller making it hard to know what to study. Tests are cumulative.
Dolphin had interesting lectures. However you were forced into group work, and you missed a fair bit if you missed a lecture or two. His grading was terrible, and he often confused himself and the class with due dates. He only graded 4 of the many assignments, and he was not clear on his grading criteria. Your group did evaluations on you.
Disagree with all the negative reviews. He has an alternative-style of teaching but he clearly explained that in the first class. An assignment almost every week, but they were easy. I really enjoyed the narrative style of learning. He actually made me like geology. Grading seemed harsh, but he has lots of grade-boosters to counteract that.
Glenn has different teaching techniques that were made very clear in the course outline and in the lectures he explained in the first week. Glenn strives to allow his students to experience working with other people in a group environment that would replicate future workplaces - a very informative and beneficial technique to my learning.
Personally Dr Dolphin is my favourite professor after taking 20 courses. Guy is hilarious and entertaining, and I am yet to have another professor with half of the passion he has. Just don't take any of his classes if you dislike group work, as this is where most of the grades come from. He also is a super generous grader especially on assignments.
Dolphin was very well spoken during lectures. He stuck to the course outline and marked easily. Tests were a bit difficult but they are done in groups so chances of getting a good grade is a bit higher.
Unorthodox approach that makes it a good science option for arts majors. Dr. Dolphin is engaged and passionate, but note that most of the important concepts are in the lectures; you might do poorly if you don't attend class. Everything, including tests, is group work. Many assignments but most are small. Expectations are clear and grading is fair.
I'm not sure why everyone is rating him so highly - he's a terrible prof who is condescending and lacks basic teaching capabilities. He does not communicate what is expected of the course or exams, citing that studying with others will help while avoiding answering your basic questions. 0 / 10 would not recommend for any major.
Glenn was an amazing instructor to have. He is very enthusiastic about the content of his classes. He structured his classes in a fun and creative manner, conveying the information in various ways. Definitely would take his classes again!
DO NOT TAKE GLGY 305 WITH GLENN DOLPHIN. He has warped the class to no longer be about dinosaurs and paleontology as it is presented in the course description. He spends entire lectures on pointless metaphors and topics that have zero relation to the class.
people are hating. Glenn is caring and hilarious, easily the most engaging class I have ever been apart and super easy to follow along. only thing I'd say it that its been 3 weeks and we haven't talked about any dinosaurs
If you have Glenn Dolphin as a professor (for at least 209) GET OUT. By his own admission he is not qualified to teach the class. He refuses to use a microphone and instead yells as loud as he can. He provides a full tutorials worth of work while taking up over half the time with completely useless stories. I repeat, if he is your professor GET OUT
This guy is the absolute GOAT he will yell at you from 2 feet away until you understand what is going on in this course. Thats it, Absolute legend.
He is the worst professor you will ever have. By his own admission he is not qualified to teach this class and cannot even pass his own exams.
Glenn Dolphin is the worst professor in western Canada. By his own admission he is not qualified to teach the courses that he is in charge of, nor can he get 100% on his own tests. He will provide 50 minute tutorials that can take up to 5 hours to complete, including a requirement to watch hour long videos. Stay away from Glenn Dolphin at all costs
DROP THIS CLASS. GLGY 209 made my first semester of university a living hell. I'm not even sure where to start... On the first day of classes, he told a story about a wizard who lives inside a crystal and can control the universe. Get ready for insane incoherent lectures, unequal group work, and a huge course load including 3 tests & 8 assignments
Course content is abstract, objectives sometimes lack clarity. Worked in small groups. Assignments are easy and don't prepare for quizzes. discrepancies in due dates. Required textbook is written by Glenn, it is not written like a typical science textbook, and it costs around $80. He is enthusiastic about the material. there is no study guide.
Glenn Dolphin is a unique character. The first lecture had him yelling at the top of his lungs about "the wizards apprentice" and "communication crystals". He tested us on this random short story about a fictional race of dinosaur people on the midterm. One morning my eardrums were shattered by him yelling about magnets. But he is a nice guy.
"Use you ever-growing knowledge of geology" will haunt my dreams for the rest of my life.
Nice guy, but he tends to include a lot of stuff in lectures that don't really matter on tests or assignments. Also, the entire course is group work. Even the tests. So if you were stuck with bozos for group members, then you're absolutely screwed. If I hear another thing about stories in geology I'm going to put a toaster in my bathtub.
Funny prof but his lectures do not cover any of what is on his tests well and you literally get quizzed on children's stories on these tests. All of your assignments and tests are done in a group, so if you get a bad group, you are basically screwed. Don't be fooled, this is NOT an easy options course
He's not an awful prof though he should not be teaching a course about dinosaurs. He spent far more time on metaphors about science and learning than he every did on dinos and repeated the same rants many times. This was even reflected in the exams where we would be asked more questions about side tangents than what should be the actual content.
Dr. Dolphin was so obsessed with being "different" that his course lacked structure. He wasn't even aware of his own assignments and due dates, and made the poor TA Jason take all the responsibility for the assessments this semester. This is the most disorganized class I've ever taken. Avoid.
Dolphins teaching style is not for everyone and involves a LOT of group work. His lecture styles is extremely eccentric which would be fun if he didnt transfer that same style into making extremely hard exams. Course is not too sciencey and exams are open book (trust me dont skip out on studying tho). Take this class if you like group work.
I would not recommend taking this course. Glenn's tests are impossible to study for and his multiple choice questions have many unfair traps. The entire course is also done in groups and he is not at all lenient to changing any groups if you are in a bad one. He doesn't really care, and didn't provide a study guide despite many students asking
A bit eccentric. Class content was interesting enough. However, he spends too much time preaching about his personal outlook on science/education. He even uses some of his opinions to structure questions on tests. Some questions on said tests were not great for this reason, but assessments were easy nonetheless. Easy A, yes. Helpful/inspiring? No.
Dr. Dolphin is an incredible lecturer. His classes were fun to attend and it's clear he's super passionate about the material! The only difficult part about his class is the group work as it really puts the pressure on the students to work together. Which, let's be real, a lot of y'all don't do well in assigned groups.
I hope he changed the structure of this course, but my course was entirely based on your group. Even your final! The assessments were poorly worded. His lectures consist of him yelling. I will say he is passionate about the topic. Just know if you dislike group anything you will dislike this entire course as it is all group based.
Lectures are very disorganized and consist of him loudly rambling in circles with little explanation. Everything is group-based which is tolerable as long as your random group members are good. If not, then this class may become a living hell. Very condescending. Another prof heavily driven by presence in research rather than knowledge in content.
I don't understand why there are so many negative reviews. In my opinion, he's a fantastic professor who genuinely cares about your learning. He's passionate, and while everything involves group work, I believe it's valuable for future jobs where teamwork is crucial.
Genuinely awesome prof, I think the reviews are way too harsh on him. He really cares for his students and wants them to learn. He even teaches passionately which you dont see in a lot in teachers.
Many of these reviews are harsh but from taking his class, so far, it's the opposite. There is a lot of group but its nothing too hard and you can do the exams online with your group to collaborate. The exams are worded in a way to really make you think, but if you attend lectures then you and your group are solid. He's very energetic but good prof
Hate how he organize this class, why everything are all depends on that group he chosed.
Amazing Professor. Without a doubt deserves the teaching award he got this semester. He is passionate and there is a reason the lecture theatre is full every class even though this is an elective for everyone. There are some haters in here but I do not understand why. Top 3 prof at least that I've had in 5 years of university at multiple schools.
Very passionate about geology, making the lectures captivating. He has a very different style of teaching. Everything is groupwork; if you get stuck with a bad group, good luck. Assignments are marked very easily, but tests are hard (he does give bonus points). You need the textbook to read short stories for the test.
Very passionate prof and great guy. If you get a bad group, consider dropping the class because everything is group based. Overall easy class tho. And pretty interesting.
If you're looking to boost gpa I urge you to take glgy 305 with Dolphin. He made us into groups on the first week and we did assignments, midterms, and the final together. Cherry on top was that peer evaluations gave the final grade a multiplier between x0.6 to x1.3 so it's easy to get an A+ with 120%. Definitely an eccentric lecturer but fun!
Very unfair method of grading, ended up getting c- for a course that i studied as hard as my group yet only group reviews are a multiplier for your grade, mean group. They never talked to me or cared to know about my opinion. And I approached the prof about this and he told me to improve my side and not much else. Extremely unhelpful and unfair.0/10
These reviews are proof that people will complain about anything. Easiest A ever. You just gotta do your part in group work and you will literally have 0 issues. Exams and tutorials are very easy & you get to do them with your group of 5. His lecture style was hilarious and kept me more engaged than I would be with a normal boring monotone prof
BEST TEACHER EVER. If you need a grade booster take this class, but even of this class was impossible to do good in I would still take it because this is the best teacher I have ever had. Glenn you rock.
He manages to assign you to the worst group possible who you have no chemistry or group dynamic with, and your entire grade ends up depending on how they think of you, avoid this class unless you are very very extroverted.
Entire class is based around groups, and Dolphin is one of the most engaging and best lecturers in the whole university. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, would highly recommend you do so.
Prof Dolphin makes this class super engaging and fun. The group-based structure can be hit or miss, but if you have a good group, it's an easy A. Unstuckstudy is a lifesaver for prepping for exams!
Professor Dolphin is very enthusiastic and passionate about his rocks! He is interactive and is very good at maintaining focus/attention during the lecture - regardless of how long the class may be. This class is focused around group work and is relatively easy (and surprisingly quite interesting). He is great!
Glenn Dolphin is an amazing professor. His classes are really engaging and you can see how passionate he is for what he does. All projects and tests are in groups that he will arrange, so grades depends a lot on who you can rely on. It's a really interesting class and a great science option for arts students. Would totally have class with him again
He's such a good teacher! His lectures are so engaging and fun, plus he brings his own props! He wrote his own textbook, which is so easy to understand! Plus, you can tell he loves his job and is very passionate about the sciences! I was lucky to have a good group, so most of the heavy graded group work turned out great and we got good marks
Hes very entertaining, engaging and funny professor. However, the course load is heavy and it is VERY confusing. Emails all over the place and not a clear outline on what needs to be done. It is also group mandatory so you dont have a choice on who to collaborate with.
Professor Dolphin is great at teaching this class. He makes science fun so if you're an art major looking for a science I recommend this one! One thing to note is class is fully group work so if you get a bad group you're cooked...
Engaging lectures. All work is done in groups of 6 (quizzes and final incl.). Hard quizzes that take some from Dolphin's "mandatory" $120 textbook. If you have a 3-4 good group members, class is sorta easy. Final grade multiplier determined by how well you are evaluated relative to the group. Painful final project, TA marked most assignments easy
His classes are very group-oriented and you do everything in a group, so make sure you are ready. He wrote the textbook himself, and often you'll get quizzed on really niche short stories from there. He is very eccentric and had engaging lectures, but sometimes it was hard to follow, especially with his instructions during assignments.
Everything is based off of groupwork so beware if you do not have a good group. Their peer evaluations may have a pivotal effect on your final grade. There are a lot of small activities you need to do which may get annoying and it is practically impossible to get 100% on the final. The prof himself said he didn't even get all the questions right...
Most of the coursework is done in groups. Professor Dolphin is very enthusiastic about the course and the material is decently engaging.
The Greatest prof, super enganging and entertaining. all group works/group test, just show up to lecture do ur work in class and you finish with above a 90.. if u don't, idk how u managed that.. super loud guy and has so much passion to what he teaches.
Glenn Dolphin is hands down the best prof I've ever had. He's very enthusiastic and passionate, and clearly really loves his job. He prioritizes student learning and collaboration, and this course has taught me way more than just geology. Glenn is a total ray of sunshine, and I was looked forward to this class! Plus he has a great taste in music :)
genuinly the chillest funniest dude ever. ppl that rate him below a 5 are just haters and dont have friends or know how to have fun. GLGY/ERTH 305 is the easiset and most fun class ive had. simple: show up, laugh, do group assignments = A...
My biggest problem are the groups. Other than that, I like Dr. Doplhin, he is fun and enganging. But your grades depends way too much on the random people you get assigned in the group with, and to be honest, if they do not like you, you will get a bad grade no matter how much work you actually do. That feels unfair.
Glenn is awesome. If you have a good group, you'll do great. Prof made the one class I was dreading this sem my favourite.
If you have a good group this class is an easy A+. If your group sucks, I would drop the class due to the amount of work you will be doing alone. He does curve your grade based on group feedback but it won't be worth it if you are alone during every tutorial and the only person who knows what's going on during exams.
Glenn's method of teaching is something I really like. Group learning. At the beginning of semester you're assigned a group. All tests and assignments are done in said group! If you have a good group, the class is an easy A. Great lectures too! He really cares about the content!
Dolphin is the funniest prof I have ever had. He made the lectures very engaging and was very receptive to feedback. He cares about his students, even in a class of 300+. The only downside to this course was that it required you to work in a group all semester, which could get challenging.
