This guy makes Math bearable. Attendance not mandatory, but recommended. He can take a long time to explain things, but makes it stick. Extremely helpful to students. He's right about homework - while not required it helps to prepare you for exams. Exams are straighforward. GMU needs more professors like this one.
Great professor. I have always hated Math and would never have taken this class unless it was required, but Professor Preston was the best teacher I could get.He gives practice exams which was great and if you do the homework and go to class (quizzes are extra credit), it is easy to get an A. Extremely helpful.I loooved him...
Very good prof. Very helpful, replies to emails almost instantly. You do have to work in this class tho. Also if you miss class he sends emails to everyone with important information so you never miss anything important. A LOT better than most of the profs teaching 114. Do take him!
Best math teacher I've ever had, and I've taken a lot of math. He's a great teacher; goes above and beyond the call of duty to help out any student, any way he can. His class takes a bit of work. He'll do whatever he can to help you through it, while remaining fair to the rest of the class.
What can I say?? He's not only a good teacher but also a great human being. Absolutely take him!
Mr. Preston really cares for his students. Unfortunately, if you are taking Calc 2, having a teacher that really cares will not guarantee an A. You have to put LOTS of effort and DO NOT get behind. The final was 11 questions and we had 2hrs and 30 min to complete it. A tip I would give anyone would be to check YouTube for tutorials!
really great prof that will try to help you in any way he can. The tests aren't too hard as he will tell u what each problem on the test will be on, also will let you have a cheat sheet, curves tests and gives extra credit too. So if you are willing to put in the work (as it is not easy) you should do really well.
Definitely take him. You will have to work since it is Calc 2, but he's very helpful and a LOT better than most Calc professors at GMU
I took him for precalculus and really enjoyed his class. He teaches for "fun" because he likes to help out students. He does not curve the class althought there is extra credit on the exams, they're typically 115 points. Just do the homework go to class and you should pass no problem.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He takes the time to make his own notes for student use of every chapter. Shows the practicality of all the methods in precalc, as well as provides different points of view for understanding. His study guides are almost exactly the exams, the quizzes are extra credit, and the homework is optional.take him
He is amazing, really cares about students learning math skills to apply to everyday life. He is really good finding different ways to solve problems, goes over the material as many times as needed, holds study sessions and is always available. Just make sure you do the homework before class so you do not fall behind and you should be good.
Preston is extremely good willed, and more than willing to help his students (he doubles his normal offices hours, and hosts additional study sessions). However, during his lectures he tends to go off the beaten path and talk about morals or other stories. The class is difficult as it is, and this distraction hindered my personal studies.
BEST MATH TEACHER AT MASON!!! Calc 2 is hard, but he is very passionate about the material which helps.. He gives out detailed notes so you have extra examples other than the text book material. He's always willing to meet up help students. He's really great, and his exams aren't hard, very straight forward.
great teacher. Held many extra help sessions beyond office hours. Was funny. Also showed how a person would think about a problem if they had no idea what to do which helped alot.
Literally the MOST dedicated teacher I've had my entire life. He provides his own notes and examples for every chapter, and the exams are 80% from the homework, examples from class. I skipped so much class but still got a B at the end purely based on his notes, the familiar exam questions, and extreme leniency in grading. You MUST take this guy!
Fantastic professor! The best one I've in math as a math major and having taken 32 math credits. He is an amazing teacher and will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material.
Glenn has to be the best math professor at Mason. He isn't easy, but he will go far above the call of duty to do anything possible to help you understand the material if you ask him. He writes up pages of his own notes for each section and distributes them to the class, as well as holding study sessions before tests. FANTASTIC PROFESSOR.
Great professor. He's the Best. Take him easy A. Cannot say more
So this is what happened I didn't go all of the recitation for quiz (0%) and 4 exams. I got 80s-90s on the first two, 18% on the 3rd and 99% on the final. The policy is if you get higher final, the grade is also replaced on the lowest. I ended up getting from F to B+. Calc 2 was really REALLY hard but the teacher is amazing :)
Preston is the hardest working professor I have ever had, by a long shot. With that said, he is not all that good at teaching because he is INCREDIBLY slow in class/office hours/review sessions. His tests are very hard and I was forced to get help elsewhere. He is a very nice guy but I am unable to rate him highly when his lectures are so useless.
Very difficult professor, not clear at all. Makes the tests extremely difficult. Does not make attendence manditory. If you do not have time to spare outside of this clas do not take him. 90% of your free time is spent studying for this class. Is helpful when he wants though
Preston goes far above and beyond what other math teachers do. He always holds two study sessions before tests so that you can attend whichever one fits your schedule best. Tests are very difficult but doing the homework makes it a lot easier. Great professor and person in general. highly recommend.
An amazing teacher, thorough during lecture and provides strong notes. He gives a detailed guide of what to study for each test. Homework is expansive but not graded and most test questions are extremely similar to problems in the homework. He is willing to help students to a great extent.
Best professor I've ever had, he really knows how to teach and goes at an understandable pace. His tests are fair, he gives study guides, so its on you if you don't do well. He really likes to help students and strives for everyone to succeed. If you put good effort in this class should be a nice B. If you go above and beyond, EASY A. take him.
I am a math major so obviously I've dealt with many of the faculty in the math department. HANDS DOWN, HE IS ONE OF THE BEST. Not only is his teaching habits amazing, but he is genuinely a good guy & understands the struggle of being a student & is willing to help them out. Go to class, try, communicate with him, and you are GUARANTEED TO PASS!!
Pr.Preston is good professor. If you want get grade in the class, please do all homework problems including even. He only gives odd problems for homework but when you study even problems, it helps in exams. You get extra credit opportunity in each exam, so that plus point. My only suggestion is "Do the freaking homework", its his favorite slogan.
Now I may not sound impartial because I'm a Math Major but he's the best math teacher at GMU. Not only is the way he teach solid, he's willing to go the extra mile. Trust me he's really helpful and considerate of the struggles of a college student.Just go to class, don't be hesitant to ask questions, and 'Do the freaking homework'
Loads of info: handoutsPDFs with HW, examples worked in detail. HW: lots, do most of it. Exams: study guide, study sessions scheduled outside of class (go to 1 per exam), 15 possible pts extra credit built in. Downside: he goes on tangents , never gets through scheduled material on syllabus. Calc3 isn't super easy, do the work and you'll be fine.
STAY AWAY if you are not a natural math whiz. Just ask for his class distribution, people either pass with over 100% or they fail with a D or F. Exams entail few & cumulative Q's -meaning if you cant do part A, there goes part B, C..D & 25% of your exam grade. REALLy nice guy, but he will only cover 1 problem per class, IF that. Must know intuition
Extremely helpful one on one but I found lectures were not productive. He spends a lot of time on algebra that students should be proficient in. He gives tons of extra credit on exams, however the exams are hard. Expect some sort of hard trig function and a graphing problem on every exam. He goes above and beyond by holding extra reviews for exams
Terribly hard professor for Precalcus. Tests are unnecessarily hard, and questions don't really relate to the homework or online quizzes. Get something wrong and you'll get everything wrong (Part a, b, c, etc. for each problem). I understand college math is harder, but this guy makes stuff harder for no reason! Lectures are long/have no context!
I did all of the homework problems he assigned and still got a D. His lectures are not even that helpful. Because of his tough grading I have to retake the class and I can't take my major related classes next semester. His tests are completely different from what he does in class. Study Guides do not help at all. Definitely would not recommend him.
Professor Preston is probably the best professor I've ever had. He goes so far above what is expected of him to help students. He holds review sessions before each exam which were incredibly helpful. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
I really enjoyed this math class, probably the best math class I have ever taken. His lectures were clear, and if you needed an extra problem or two to understand a concept, he would happily oblige. He was also willing to work around medical issues and etc. to reschedule tests&exams with students on a case-by-case basis.
Glen Preston is a dime in a dozen! He is always available to help. He creates accurate study guides. He schedules review sessions before exams. He creates step by step solutions for homework problems. He cares so much for his students and its rare to see a professor that doesn't just help you but goes the extra mile to make sure you succeed.
I enjoyed his class a lot, bordered on one of the best math classes I've ever taken. Lots of extra credit on exams, holds extra review sessions outside of class, and is pretty funny. Would recommend for 106.
Good teacher. However, I thought his final was a bit rushed. They should have more adjunct professors like Preston teaching lower-level math courses. They are a good intermediate between high school teachers and associate professors. Not an easy class by any stretch, but he provided a ton of notes and samples which helped a lot.
Prof. Preston is awesome, but his pre-calc class isn't easy. He explains material thoroughly and holds extensive reviews, but prepare to put in a significant amount of effort if you want to do well. 4 exams - no calculator, weekly quizzes, attendance not taken but necessary if you want to succeed. You will definitely learn a lot for higher math!
Great teacher. Even if you struggle in math, it's hard not to pass this class if you go to tutors and his office hours for help.
He's a really entertaining lecturer although he gets behind in his lectures. He provides all his notes online and homework answers. He's willing to help students outside of class and genuinely cares about you learning the material! If you do the homework and ask questions you will pass.
He does not explain well in class, however he tries. he thinks that everyone knows all the basics in math whereas he sometimes jumps to conclusions immediately. he is a tough grader, and you have to be able to write a new math's book in order to get an A.
THIS CLASS IS NOT EASY. YOU MUST WORK FOR YOUR GRADE. going to class is useless, the lectures are boring and not helpful. I recommend studying through math lab. Quizzes are not that bad and if u do all of them u get EC. Tests are not so bad if u study previous exams, they are super similar. Make sure you keep up with quizzes and study for tests
Gives lots of extra credit on tests which will save you if you're not a natural!! Puts all notes, lectures and many resources online. Hilarious in class but falls behind in lectures so you're better off just doing all the homework and practice exams before the test.
Preston is a really great professor who clearly cares about his students. Classes aren't mandatory but if you don't attend you probably won't pass. He gives out exams from previous years so that's really helpful! Tries to clear up questions and gives as much info as he can. I dont like math at all but he made it tolerable!
Glenn is a really awesome guy, as well as being a great professor. The reason that he is a great professor, on top of everything else, is that he cares a lot about creating intuition on the subject matter, rather than covering tons of material. Definitely recommended. (Plus he gives extra credit for REALLY good answers ;) )
Very through professor, and very reasonable overall. Difficult material, however he makes it easy.
Great professor, especially if math is not your strongest. Have the chance to drop an exam. Didn't do HW problems but he does have exams from previous years. DO THOSE AND KNOW THEM IN AND OUT. They usually are similar or exact problems that will be on the exam. 44 quizzes but only grades 37 of them. He definitely cares about his students.
Prof. Preston is a really great math professor. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed, but if you don't put the work in you won't pass. He has a lot of extra credit, and his exams are mostly from notes and the homework, but slightly easier or harder. He also has a great personality, and is a real cool guy.
I'm am currently a freshman who needed a math credit, and boy did I find a professor that goes above and beyond the call of duty. Before every exam there is a review ( that I didn't go to) and every exam has detailed solutions given out after the exam along with his previous exams and solutions. It's evident that he cares about his students
Taking pre-calc with Preston was a challenge, he's a really chill and funny professor, and he gives you a lot of chances to bring your grade up. 7 optional online quizzes that give you a grade bump. 3 midterms, and one final, he's a slow lecturer but if you visit his test review, office hours, and study previous exams you'll be fine. Practice!
Im terrible at math. Flat out. This professor will help you until the material is drilled deep into the subconscious of your brain. You have to take the initiative to ask for help though becuase in the end this is college. He will explain it to you step by step if you are willing to do the work first. Lesson: Do the work first then ask for help.
Seriously one of the best out there! He knows his stuff & is able to teach it in a such a way that it actually sticks. Goes above and beyond in his responsibilities as a teacher. Whether that is holding extra review sessions before exams, making in-depth study guides or his chapter notes which are lifesavers! Go to his class, do the HW & u r set!
Glenn is the best. He believes in telling students what they are going to be tested on, so his study guides are REAL close to his exams. He explains things thoroughly. He encourages questions in class even though the classes are big and he wants to be corrected if he's wrong. Optional homework and 15 EC points to start out with on every exam.
For the love of god please do your homework and go over the past exams he gives you. It is very tempting especially with a load of other classes to just not do the homework and try and let his exam review carry you but it is not worth it. Save yourself the headache and get the easy A that doing the homework would give you. If not you will get a F
He is one of the best professor I have taken at GMU. He goes the extra mile to make sure students have all the material to help them. He was also very respectful of other students, which I sometimes don't see here. If you're like me who has struggled in math a lot, he is the professor you want! I would take any class with him!
He's very kind and genuinely cares about helping students learn. But if this is your first experience with calc, maybe take someone else. He gives partial credit, but his lectures are v hard to follow, and there's not much opportunity to make up for bad test grades. I'd leave his office hrs more confused than when I came.
His lectures are hard to follow, notes don't make a whole lot of sense, and his tests took basic concepts and turned them more difficult than they should have been. Do the homework, practice difficult problems, and try to complete as much of the problems as possible on the test. He does give out lots of extra credit, but overall he made calc 1 hard
DO NOT take him for calc 1. He's a very bad lecturer and barely does any practice problems in class. His tests are also VERY difficult. Our exam average was a 55% and he does not curve. Do yourself a favor and not take him.
If you aren't a math wiz, I don't recommend him. Problems he asks are harder than they should be and are worth much credit as there are so few questions on exams. They are taken from hw probs in the textbook, but each subchapter has around 40+ questions so you'll never know which one he'll ask. The class highest average was around 60+. Nice guy tho
Clac I is hard. However, Prof Preston does a good job explaining it. Also, his exams come exactly the same as his study guides. Super nice guy.
Do a comprehensive job of the homework. Ask for help! After struggling through questions yourself. Preston goes the extra mile to make sure his students understand what is happening in his class. Review sessions, study guides, and office hours. Remember if you are moving on; you need these base skills. This class is hard, but don't give up.
Overall a fairly good class. However, the lectures were not entirely helpful sometimes. Occasionally, they were off topic or just came straight from the textbook and I couldve taught myself. He puts a lot of work into teaching though and really cares about students which is why I would take him again. Theres also tons of extra credit in class!
Many of the people in this class were freshman who don't know how to study YET. Preston can be abrupt sometimes, but this material wasn't made to be put in a lullaby. It's wicked hard! Review the HW multiple times to solidify comprehension of the material. Preston is assiduous in helping his students if they're willing to help themselves learn.
Professor Preston is very hard to follow in class. He stays forever on one point and wastes so much time that he has to jump through the rest. Would not reccomend!
He takes simple concepts and makes them difficult. Get ready to learn everything off youtube. Lectures are spent ineffectively as he doesn't know when to switch topics. However, he's a super nice guy and cares about his students. He has good intentions but with no curves with averages of around 55-60% the class is too hard.
Unless you're good at math, do not take him. He cannot explain any concepts clearly.
Class was a waste of time because it took him 2 hours to get through one concept, which wasn't explained throughly enough. Millions of tangents during lecture. His study guides were 10 pages long with words. Do not take him for calc 1 and DO NOT listen to the high ratings of the few people who got an A+. He was awful.
Very difficult exams for a professor who barely teaches.
Preston cares about us learning. Even though he went off tangent often during lectures, he tried to keep intact with teaching each chapter. This class is a weed out course, its hard so you have to give it your best. Practice homework problems, go to office hours, work on your trig and algebra skills because of that most people's weakness.
Hes an awesome and hilarious guy, and he goes the extra mile to help out(exam review sessions). But his tests were way more difficult than they had to be. Average class grade was a D. And one exam, half the class didnt finish because it was so time consuming. Also his lectures are useless.
Unless you want to do proofs all day long dont take him. Lectures are random and incoherent. Only 5 questions on tests but each question is huge and long.
Preston is my favourite professor at GMU! He provides a LOT of notes online that are VERY helpful (which is rare in a college course). For those complaining about him for MATH 113, that course is challenging and you have to really know your pre-calc. You will appreciate him more once you take harder math courses. He actually cares unlike most profs
If you like math, you will enjoy his lectures. He provides all the materials for success online. There is plenty of study material there. He cares about your success but you also have to care. I think his exams are very fair and looking over the lecture slides is good preparation. Math courses are challenging, but that isn't the professors fault
Humbly, I took MATH105 with him as well. His exams are difficult. I HIGHLY recommend this: do some problems that aren't listed as homework towards the end and/or the even questions. Some lectures were better than others, but he was always willing to help and admit his mistakes. Think about it, we all can't be at our best 100% of the time.
This professor cares. He's awesome. He cares about you passing. Unfortunately he does sometimes go on tangents and gets off topic at times - sometimes his lectures can be a little dry too. Despite that, he absolutely is a great guy. If you can keep your nose in the books and study HARD, you'll do great and come out with a fantastic understanding.
It's a tough class and I am not that great at math. This professor was way too random for me. I felt like exam material was nothing like the study guides or lectures. Hes a really smart and funny guy, even motivating but he needs to teach with much more structure. Very traditional teaching style. Grades you like your a math major.
Spends an entire class on one problem instead because he keeps wasting time talking about random things. Definitely wouldn't take with him again.
Best professor Ive ever had. Took this class with another professor last spring and failed. Retook with Preston and got an A. Read his study guides and youll easily get an A on exams. He even gave us a playlist of his favorite study tunes before finals. Great guy and an excellent teacher, take his class if you ever get the chance.
Prof Preston invests in his students, provides the most helpful notes, gives extra credit oppertunities, tells hilarious life stories, and has a great taste in music. Once you're his student, you're always his student - he truly cares and wants everyone to succeed.
Heres the thing, Linear is a hard class in general. But I know a good professor when I see one. He says "once you're my student you are always his student", he goes above and beyond for his students. Its not an easy A, but he is by your side if you show the effort. Just do the hw and practice exams and you will be fine!
Professor Preston loves to see his student's success and willing to go beyond to help students. He's also very knowledgeable about the subject and well prepare lectures. If you put in a fair amount of time to the homework, the exams are a joke. Take him for Linear!!!!!!!
Material can be hard but he gives you every opportunity to succeed. Optional extra cred quizzes every week, good feedback on exams + built in extra cred, & lots of resources (his own notes/hw explanations, past tests for practice, etc). A breath of fresh air during covid. Hes funny and accommodating. Couldnt recommend him enough. TAKE HIM!
Linear is a hard class, but he explains the material very well. I took notes on the textbook, did the hw, and did his past exams to prepare for each exam, and it worked well. Quizzes are for extra credit only but his tests can have similar problems so would recommend doing them. VERY kind, respectful, funny professor. Best choice for this class.
Linear Algebra is hard. This professor made it much more bearable. Really cares for his students and strives for perfection in his teaching. Lectures are concise and just make sense. One of the best math professors I've had.
A great math teacher for linear algebra. Teaches concepts straight up and puts those same lecture examples in the quizzes. Tests include a couple conceptual questions that require you to know the material, but he goes over it in class, so as long as you watch lectures, you should know what you're doing. LOTS of extra credit too.
I have enjoyed taking Professor Preston for Linear Algebra. The class notes he prepares are easy to understand and he offers a lot of extra-credit opportunities. Professor Preston will teach you the importance of deductive reasoning and how to check your work, which are skills I will take with me. Take Preston for any math class you can!
Overall, the course was organized and well structured. Professor Preston was always accessible and had great communication via BB/emails. Tried to make linear algebra as straightforward and easy to grasp as possible. Lots of practice materials and study guide for tests. Extra credit in the form of weekly quizzes. Excellent professor!
Prof. Preston is my fav teacher at gmu. He's incredibly accessible outside of class, and is always willing to help you with anything if you just reach out to him. Very accommodating, and very reasonable
Preston's retiring after this semester, and he deserves it! The amount of work he puts into the course is unfounded by any prof @ GMU. Gives everyone a chance to do well. Has a passion for math and a distaste for BS. I hope he enjoys the rest of his life with his family, works on his health, and stays away from friggin' touch screens and Microsoft.
The single best prof I've ever had. If you have the chance take him.
Prof Preston was awesome! I went to his office hours all the time because I'm pretty bad at math and he was always so kind and encouraging. He also genuinely cares about his students and wants you to learn. I wish him the best in his retirement!
