Very thorough, difficult only if you fall behind.
He's weird, but he knows his poly-sci.
Very knowledgeable, learned a lot from the class. Gives a LOT of work; very demanding, but not impossible. Just don't fall behind. Not as bad as his reputation would make him out to be.
Hard teacher, but very knowlegable. Makes to stay after the exam. Takes attendance. Loves to hear himself talk (and admits it). Bland humor.
Great Teacher makes you use your brain and your writing skills.

He is a very hard professor but he is always willing to help students. He is a brilliant and an inteliigent professors who make use of hard words and makes you read a really really hard book that no 1 can understand.
GRRRR! I cannot stand this man. He is mean and nasty, and if you don't know everything under the stars you are a horrible person! STAY AWAY!!!
He is def boring and arrogant. However he knows his stuff. Explains everything but just take good notes. Tests are fill-in blank, multi-choice, short answer and then 2 essays. If you take good notes and study it should be no problem. And one 10 page paper u have to write.
Great "teacher" very informative no more that 1 a each semester, he is one of the ones behind revamping princeton's new grading policy. He was the most imformative teacher i've had but I wouldn't take him again because he is a ****
Earned 2Bs ever & 1of them was in his class. Over the years the info has become boring 2 him & in turn he doesnt care if hes explaining it in an organized fashion. Furthermore he makes u read&write multiple entires on a790+page1776 book that can only count against ur grade if u dont do them!STAYAWAY
Harsh test grader. I wish I hadn't taken the course. He speaks in an arrogant manner which becomes very annoying very quickly. Don't take his course!
He is very smart and I find him very amuzing to listen to. He has a dry sense of humor which I always find entertaining! The material is rather boring but he makes it intereting and he is always available for office hours and responds to emails in a timely fashion!
He is a very good teacher, and although i am not doing great in his class i have learned quite a bit.
Sometimes really hard to follow, dry sense of humor, really harsh test grader. I do not recommend taking this course.
The man is so boring it is hard to stay awake. He is awful but his test are easy... the hmwk not so much..
BORING, BORING class/professor. I never went because there was no point. I honestly can't recall a lecture that made any sense to me-and it's not like the material was even difficult. It was just beat-and all he does is go off on tangents about his family, grandkids, washer/dryer, his retirement...please. Nice guy-bad professor.
Prof. Ricketts kept me laughing for 3 hours! He is extremely knowledgeable and brilliant. He encourages you to come into his office anytime. Great professor!
He is an aquired taste. If you have an ounce of maturity you'll get on fine.

I enjoyed his sense of humor, though it's not for everyone. He explained the material well, though he sometimes had a tendency to repeat himself. If you hate to read and write, not only should you not take this class but you should consider avoiding political science and history for the remainder of your college experience.
He's an original. Doesn't try to be hip or well liked, and that's what makes him so appealing. Give him a try.
The very first day of class he brags about how much of a pompous ass he is, no joke he actually called himself that. My best reccomendation i can give you other than to avoid this professor like the plague is to bring no doz and beat yourself about the head until you drool uncontrolably. This man reads the Federalist Papers like its Tom Clancy. Horrible horrible man. NO personality, mean spirited. I dropped this class and lost money thats how bad it was.
I dont know about anyone else, but I actually really liked this guy. He gets a little slow sometimes, but****, who doesnt?! He made me laugh every single class and thats not easy. Its hard, and a lot of work, and i failed anyways, but**** I had fun failing.
If you've got an ounce of maturity you will see that this man is a good teacher. He is unique to say the least, but that's what makes him so funny. He reminds me of someone out of a movie...I wish I could remember, but he really is a nice man.
This guy is a good teacher, and he knows his stuff. One of the smartest people I have met in my life. If you want challenge take his classes. I found them damn near impossible... and I'd like to think I have some brains. Good class though, great sense of humor.
His exams are straight forward and are based off his lectures. If you study (I would recom. flash cards), you'll do fine. If you don't study, then. well, you can guess what happens. His lectures tend to be somewhat long and tedious (unless you have a high interest in the topics). I woudl recommend taking the class in two day segments, if possible.
This teacher is one to stay away from. Dont even hesitate to drop this class beacuse I can say through experience only about 4 people in my class were recieving a AB or C on there final grades. Hes tough hard to follow because his lectures are so long and boring, and basically his tests are unpassable without atleast 4-6 hours of studying.DONTPICK
Extremely knowledgable. Difficult and definately pushes students above and beyond the standard. Makes corny jokes but a good teacher. If you want a good grade in his course you have to WORK for it. Dont take more than one of his classes at a time and try to take it on 2 days. International relations for 3 hrs kills you

HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!!!
Not a very good teacher. Taught to tests and gave rather uninspired essay questions. I didn't mind memorizing things and reading the federalist papers, but he didn't allow for much discussion beyond regurgatation of text. It wasn't a hard class, but probably the least interesting one I've taken. Wouldn't recommend it if you just want an elective

Horrible teacher for a 101 class.Teaches like he is teaching a Master level course.Very arrogant and unhelpful
The most challenging professor I've had, but I thought it was a good thing - it felt like an actual college level class. He has been teaching forever so he really knows what he's talking about, and he talks. A lot. You will definitely come out of his class knowing how to take extensive notes. Overall I think he's great.
worst prof. I ever had. He is boring diring his lecture;makes you wanna fall to sleep. His tests are nearly imposible. I studied alot for his tests and still got 67or69. He just talks and talks. He knows somethings about gov't but some other thing I heard him sayin were bs. He tries to act funny ot tough, but he aint. 2 bad hes the only prof teachi
I really wouldn't recommend this professor at all! His class is very difficult and in every lecture he just gives out too much information to handle. His tests are very difficult, involving multiple choise, true or false, open ended questions, and an essay (yes all in one!) You can't even drink water or use a laptop on his class! very old fashion gu
Yes he knows his stuff. But he is a harsh harsh grader, makes you read The decline and fall of the roman empire and summarize every 200 pages. Stay away from this man if you are not looking for a masters degree type course.
HARD...is not the right word for this professor....he is the worst nightmare of a student. His exams are only one hour long and he includes multiple choice true-false and two essays....and when you ask him for extra help he will just look at you and only talk if you ask him questions, if not he will just look at you. THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER
He was an overall bad teacher. Was not very student friendly. Grades his students extemely hard. Takes a lot of points off for little mistakes.
Have to read "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire": 760+ pgs, wordy & must write 6 summaries on it--REQUIRED for course, though don't count toward grade. Course tough. Strict grader, quirky, but good guy w/genuine concern for students. Clear about things, but have to listen, and make sure to take more notes than he writes on board.
Not a good teacher, does not give extra credit, or even show that he cares if students pass or not. Don't take him if you don't have to.
This teacher is horriable. It is impossiable to get an A in this class. All his tests consist of essay questions that he picks apart and give only partial credit. Aside from homework assignments every class "all mandatory, but for no credit to your grade" you will have a 10 page paper to write as well. Best possiable grade in this class is a B.
Not a bad guy. It was harder work than my other classes, but I really didn't think he was unreasonable or insane or anything. Only take his class if you're genuinely interested. NOT the class to take to fill the general humanities requirement. I would probably take a class of his again.
The prof is not that bad, he is a walking encyclopedia! He is probably one of the smartest teacher I have ever had but also one of the hardest. This is not an easy A class or B for that matter. You have to pay attention from the get go and really take good notes because the tests are based on your NOTES. You have to put the time in this class.

International Relations... Kinda quirky, funny in a dorky way. Really smart, but gets off-track a lot (usually interesting, though). The tests are a little spastic, and the essays are really hard, but really really interesting. Really great if you're into the subject matter, a little tricky if you're walking into the class totally clueless.
Not al0t of work at all. NEED TO TAKE GOOD NOTES. TEST BASED ON NOTES. You do not even use the book at all.Classes all lecture. No interaction of any kind. Pretty boring although he tries to make it interesting.Nice guy though. Test questions are very specific. Do not miss class. 3 tests, final, few summaries and one paper make up grade.
Professor Ricketts is a very smart man. He knows his stuff and seems to not use notes at all. His class is completely lecture and does not really involve any discussion. The book is not used and if you listen to him and take good notes you should get a good grade. The tests are mostly short answer. He was overall an average teacher.
tough class, tough professor and he cares if you do!
Very boring lectures. I'm lucky I passed with a D. I would not recommend him for an intro class. OH yea, and you have to read a 700 page book just for homework that was wriiten in 1700's. needless to say...Good Luck!
ricketts knows the subject but his lessons are boring. he does not answer questions well, he only restates what he said originally with not much clarification. if you take this class prepare for extremely hard tests and tough reading for homework.
Very interesting lectures, although often off topic, and all tests are based completely on notes. His assignments are just too much - more than 100 pgs of reading from the most boring book I've ever touched. He says its good for you, probably is. Tough love...
Professor Ricketts is very smart, though he often says he has no idea what he is talking about. While the book is a good read, it's useless for this course since all tests are based off notes and in-class lectures. You also have to read and write summaries on the history of Rome, and there is a term paper or book review due as well. Hard, but good.
Ok, so obviously you are reading these comments since he is the ONLY teacher that teaches American Gov't and Politics, a class that most degrees require. Now all I have to say is good luck. The tests are very difficult, the final is clearly impossible, and your attendance is mandatory. He is smart but is all over with his boring lectures. Goodluck!
Very boring. Did not use textbook once. Rambles on and does not answer questions. He is very educated in the subject matter as well as latin..but that does not make a good teacher.
Upon reading the previous reviews, I assumed his intro class would be terrible on all levels. Although his exams and assignments were challenging (so what this is college...)his lectures were informing, and fascinating. Also his exams were based right off class notes. Guy is funny, and a walking encyclopedia...Highly recommended.
This was the best prof. I had last semester. He was a bit difficult, but he was the only guy yet who really taught me anything.
Very good professor. One of my best ever.
A brilliant professor, from whom if you are willing you will learn very much. He knows his subject perfectly understand Latin and expects you to do your work. After all this is college. His tests are centered around the class notes and reinforced by the book, however if you are good at lectures you wont need the book.
I really like this professor. He really knows his stuff, and once you get to know him he's nice. He doesn't use the text books, except for the Federalist. Only buy that one. He's great about taking late assignments. I didn't find his tests to be too difficult, but it's tough to figure out what to study.
Awesome teacher. Moderate to difficult work load. (6 pain in the butt summaries of an unrelated history book), but other than that no complaints. Learned ALOT.
Hard teacher, but this is college - what do you expect? Extra credit assignments are for middle school students, high school at best. In college, we're all adults - it's OUR responsibility to see that we pass the class, not the teacher's! Kudos to teachers who still have standards and don't cater to whiners. In a job, attendance is mandatory!
Stay away from this one. 90% of the class failed. He knows alot about the subject but it isnt taught well. Instead take the summer class with Brindle
WAYYY difficult aside from academics u cant bring coffee to class/have to ask to be excused. He is insatiably particular for detail. In class, I wanted to ask about my grade for my paper, and overheard him reading aloud the SAME critique word for word that he wrote off someone else's. The only prof offered as of now for the intro course, good luck!
by far the worst teacher I have EVER had. this school needs a new professor to teach this class. the man is a brick wall. he doesn't care for his students needs one bit.
Sorry everyone this class is not and easy A. But mr Ricketts is a beast and awesome. You will take a lot of notes and his test are all off his "notes". So if you write exactly what he puts on the board and actually study you should pass all his tests. Mr. Ricketts is so funny and extremelly helpful. If you ever have a question he will answer it.
This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken in College. Ricketts is a nice guy but you really have to work your ass off to do well in this class. Don't even dare missing one of his classes, you could be potentially dropping a letter grade off of your next test. Once again, he is VERY TOUGH. Stay FAR AWAY from this class if you are a slacker.
Whoever wrote the comment about writing his notes word for word off the board is clearly lying about ever having taken his class. He is 90% lecture and 100% unreasonable. It is NOT worth taking his class if u are looking for an intro to polisci class bc he justteaches a history course under the name. EXTREMELY difficult and condescending professor!
Lectures- extremely boring. Three hour class, no food, coffee, soda or anything except water. Need to ask to be excused from the class. If he knows he is going to get done early he will try to entertain the class with unnecessary, irrelevant side stories just to make the entire three hours.Take the notes he puts on board.Miss 1 nd class u will fail
Ignore the bitter comments, these are obviously from people who refused to put work into the class and were angry when they didn't get a good grade. If you are a hard worker you will do fine in this class and you will come out with a lot of interesting knowledge. Glenn Ricketts is a brilliant man! Just realize this is a very tough class.
Yes, this class is difficult but if you put in an effort you will pass. Professor Ricketts is a nice guy and will go out of his way to help students understand material He is funny in a quirky way and is extremely smart. The required book review is an unpleasant 7 pages but this is college. Overall this class is challenging but you will learn alot
Recommended. Pros: Organized, intelligent, humble, great storyteller (reenacted Shays' Rebellion), makes cute jokes & lapses n2 Jimmy Cagney impersonations. Any1 interested n politics will b rewarded. Explains both sides to every story. Cons: Doesn't go over exams- expects u2 prioritize his lessons- take thoro notes on main ideas & use flashcards!
This man is hell on earth. RVCC needs to hire another professor to teach American Government & Politics because he is just AWFUL to say the least. Lectures are beyond boring, his jokes aren't funny, his tests are ridiculous...I could go on and on. Avoid him at all costs if you can!!
He makes sure students understand the lesson material, if they take the initiative to ask questions. Mr. Ricketts is very strict about grading, especially with writing assignments, but that makes the student an even better writer and test-taker in the end. He may be a tough teacher, but he is by far one of the best I had. Loved the class.
He is always willing to answer questions, if students take the initiative to. He is strict with grading, especially with writing assignments, but this just makes the student a better writer/test taker in the end. College isn't 13th grade, so expect to be challenged. Mr. Ricketts was an extremely tough professor, but amazing. I loved his class.

Very difficult course. Honestly, moves too fast when it comes to notes and doesn't go over assignments with the class. Hard class, just don't even be late nor miss class. He will fail you.
lectures.. but not really about anything that you need to know for the exams.. although his lectures will keep you entertained.. you have to teach mosst of the material to yourself by reading the text book. you are also required to read and summarize a book throughout this course which is a pain. but besides that hes not too bad.
He is by the far the most difficult professor I have ever dealt with. You will learned a lot though. Take good notes and go see him when you don't understand something. He will answer you questions through email or in person. Just don't take him if you're a slacker because you will fail. Stay away from him unless you're a major in global politics.
Really good professor. Initially comes off as harsh but has a very dry sense of humor. Get his humor and you'll understand his underlying humanity. All exams taken from notes so attendance is extremely important. Study notes and use text as a back-up. I like him but the semester project is horrible but an easy way to increase your grade.
My friend put in 100% effort and she has had a 4.0 in college for 2 years now, and she is going to get a B in his class. I have gotten all A's and B's and have a 3.19 and I may not pass this class with a C. This teacher is very bad and should not be teaching. Stay away unless you want to bring down your grade.

A scholar and intellectual of the old school. Not an easy class at all but he's knowledgeable, informative, and professional. Best for those who really care about the subject matter. He's everything a college professor should be.
Great teacher! I have taken additional classes that he teaches for fun. Classes are difficult, but if you do some time working on the assignments you'll be fine. Tests are based almost 99% on what he writes on the board. No trouble getting an A.
Great teacher. He expects effort on your part, and with some work it's a pretty easy A.
I cannot express how much I enjoyed this class. Professor Ricketts truly loves what he does and it is evident in his lectures. The class can be challenging at times but for those who value an education over an easy grade...this professor is for you.
Do not take this class unless you're really into what he teaches and its your mayor. Extremely hard and challenging, does not offer any tests reviews, must literally learn on your own and on what he lectures. His semester projects are horrible, not lenient with work... Not an easy grade here, you have to really work for it and earn it.
An awesome professor, I learned a lot.
Overall, I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot. That being said this is NOT AN EASY CLASS! PROFESSOR RICKETTS IS TOUGH! Your grade is based off 3 tests, One 7 page book report or 10 page page, and one final. THATS IT! My suggestion is take REALLY GOOD NOTES! He is the only one who teaches this class. I studied real hard and got a C.
I DISAGREE with the other reviewers on here. Yes, Prof. Ricketts is a hard grader BUT he gift wraps the answers directly to you! If you make flash cards and actually STUDY a decent amount of time you will get the grade! I did not get lower than 91s on all my tests! He is a great teacher who will help you. I would recommend this class to anyone!
This guy is in his own world. Maybe the most vague teacher i have ever had in terms of grading requirements and material review. Also is very aloof natured away from teaching and isn't flexible about anything. His teaching style is also very drab and uncreative, always right to the textbook. All in all, he's really a lousy teacher.
I would not recommend this teacher. He is extremely difficult and very inflexible. He is off in his own world and appears to find himself extremely interesting. You have to study VERY MUCH in order to do well in this class.
Great at teaching the material, just very hard when it comes to the exams. Do NOT buy the textbook! You CAN get an A without reading one page from the book. The only book you need to buy is The Federalist Papers. All of the answers to the questions on the tests are from his notes, so write down EVERYTHING he writes on the board and MEMORIZE them.
Everything comes from lectures. Write down everything he says or writes on the board. You wont use the book. There are only 3 exams all year. He covers a lot of material between exams. There is one book review that he grades harshly. Believes that, "the only difference between his class and a Harvard education is that you pay more at Harvard."
Funny and eloquent. WORK. But worth it. Overall, loved the class... exams are a mix of open ended and multiple choice. STUDY. NOT AN EASY A.
Ricketts is a great teacher who seems very well informed and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Not the easiest class in the world but is not even remotely hard. If you are a good worker and study well, you should pass this course with no difficulty.
not a very good professor. he isn't straight forward and goes off topic multiple times
Prof Rickets is the kind of guy you want to be educated by. If youre not serious about school or want an easy A this class is not for you. However, if a decent amount of effort is put forth an A can come from this class. I would recommend taking a class from Professor Ricketts, the guy is a genius.
Take notes on whatever he says, study those notes and you'll do fine. The class is all lecture based, with a few short assignments now and then. He is a very polite, formal guy and will not hesitate to help you, you just have to ask. The class really is not tough if you just pay attention. Ignore all the bad reviews, it's a good class.
He's a harsh grader, but this class is relatively easy if you pay attention in class. The real difficulty comes in with his reading and response assignments that will count for a good portion of your grade. Read and hand in the assignments class shouldn't be too hard. I thought he simplified his lessons enough that they were understandable.
So. Much. Writing.
What can i say about this professor that has not been said already , he is possibly the worst professor i have taken at RVCC so far. u miss one class, u r in danger of failing. NO HOMEWORK. 3 Test and 1 Paper. Tests are extremely hard. if u fail 2 tests, drop out and save time! His lectures are long and he never lets u leave early. WORST CLASS EVER
Fantastic professor who is very enthusiastic. Has some interesting quirks but by far the best teacher I have had at RVCC thus far. I think he is a reasonable grader and the HW is farily light. He assigns readings which are extremely helpful for the tests but he does not give quizes so you do not have to read them. He deserves a high rating.
he will give you a book to read harder than any shakespeare you have ever read only to offset you from the assignments. do not buy any of the books as he will not care what the book will say at all and it is a waste of money. He does not help nor give extra credit. memorize what he writes on the board. Expect a proffessor who is old and set in ways
Took this class expecting to know more than I thought, I was wrong and was over burdened by weekly homework assignments and exams (one over spring break) It is like the work load never ends and the weekly amount of questions to be answered usually can not be done in one sitting and I have no clue what my grade is because he does not grade us weekly
His classes are short so he starts his lectures immediately, expect to learn he is very knowledgeable and is interesting. This is college so expect to work, however he is not nearly the toughest most burdensome teacher I've had.
This professor absolutely deserves a higher rating. He is incredibly well-versed in the subject, and is exactly the type of instructor that history professors should model themselves after. He is very professional, while strictly keeping his opinions out of the subject matter. The lectures are broken down very easily. Pay attention, work for an A
this was by far the worst class i've taken at RVCC, and i would not recommend anyone taking this professor!
One of the best professors I've ever had the pleasure to be taught by, either in the U.S. and overseas. This is the type of education you might expect at college level and not the dominant mediocrity of most of the classes in U.S. colleges. He's exactly what a university professor is supposed to be: smart, verse in the subject , strict and sharp.
I bit off more than I can chew taking a political science class however this man has taught me more than most other professors I've had combined. He's not biased and just gives facts. His lectures go off topic at least a day so write down everything he puts down on the board and memorize it to the letter.
I'm seeing quite a few sour grapes reviews on this page. Professor Ricketts taught my International Relations class, and he was easily one of the best teachers I've had at RV or elsewhere. He's an old-school academic, so show up to class and remember that your lecture notes will be your lifeline. Study & do the readings. If you do, you're good.
Prof Ricketts can be difficult at times, however, his lectures are very interesting to listen if you're interested in political science and foreign affairs. He knows the subjects extremely well and is very educated. There are only a few homework assignments, however, they may take a while to complete as they involve some reading.
Best professor at RV. He is evidently passionate about the subject, and teaches you a lot without making it overly difficult. He gave a few quizzes and one out-of-class essay. Getting an A was straightforward: just pay attention, do the homework, and take notes.
I enjoyed Professor Ricketts's class. He lectures for most of the class period, but they're entertaining. Pay attention to what he writes on the board and take good notes. Don't put off the semester project, especially if you choose to do the research paper. The federalist readings are hard, but he goes over them in class. Interesting course
Hardest and worst class I've ever taken. Totally uncaring about his students. Only 5 grades over the semester, with required and ungraded response papers every week. Lecture heavy with no visual aid or notes online. Write down everything on the board and memorize it to pass the exams. Incredibly difficult for a 101.
He is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable in his field (it's astounding how much info lives in his head). Requires 300 pg biweekly reading (ungraded ugh!). Be warned, Gibbon reading material is dense! Sometimes the lecture notes won't be enough for the tests so read the textbook! Is open to dialogue/questions & is impressively unbiased. Tough class for intro!
Ricketts is a lecturer, that is the only way you will get the information needed for the tests. The tests are quite randomly selected when it comes to questions so you will really have to pay attention. I thought I was doing at least better than the C I got but his grading is so stupid, for homework he grades them with check marks... what?
I was skeptical about Ricketts considering the negative reviews he had. Its true hes all lectures but his lectures are always interesting. Ricketts is very well informed and unbiased when lecturing. He always has interesting stores to tell when lecturing. Only 5 grades through the semester, 3 tests, a book report or research paper and the final.
Incredible lectures. Tests have weirdly worded questions from them that may not be originally emphasized, so pay close attention. No study guides but plenty of office hours. He doesn't state his opinions outright but you must figure them out & agree with them in your exam essays. If you don't, you'll end up paying with your grade like others have.
I was eager to become more familiar with politics. Leaving this class empty handed. I am a straight A student, I received my first C. Really uncomfortable learning environment, no room for double sided conversation, weird details on test, and no chance for feedback until Ricketts harshly grades assignments. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I did a book report on the book "The new Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander that talked about the war on drugs and how it was utilized as a legal means of racial oppression. He didn't like it. Said it had nothing to do with politics. Got an F. Took it again, another F, only to rectify himself and give me a C after I confronted him on why he failed me.
no point in buying a text. ANTI TECHNOLOGY semester is nearly over & 0 grades in. entire class is lecture ONLY. praises decline & fall by gibbon, made us write 2+ pg "UNGRADED BUT REQUIRED" summaries about that horrible, 16th century, outdated book every class. super tough grader on the work he does grade(1 test so far) anything is better than this
Only allows you to leave the classroom once per semester, wouldn't let me go to the bathroom. I take diligent notes during class as well as from the book and study for every test but never did very well. Offered no outside help when I asked. Failed me on my semester project which made me fail the class. Loves hearing himself talk, do not take him.
No technology allowed during class (yup, no laptops), not allowed to go to the bathroom, and heavy lecturing. Ricketts is very passionate about what he teaches so it's only him lecturing the entire class time. Tests are very hard even if you studied, his grading is very harsh and and unforgiving. DO NOT take this class even if it's the last offered
This is my first post on rate my professor. I am graduating this year from RV. All As except his class I got a C (thank God for pass/fail). Dont get me wrong, he is extremely intelligent, I wrote down everything he wrote on the board PLUS what he would say. Still did bad. Lecture is so unorganized. No matter what I did it wasnt good in his eyes
Lectures for the ENTIRE class. Write down EVERYTHING he writes. Prepare to memorize things. You get very limited chances to increase grades. He has a lot of knowledge. Not an easy A. Be careful what you write about for your research assignment. He has his own views so i recommend agreeing with them for that A.
Worst class ever taken. Never once received a good grade in this class. He provides no feedback and when he does all he writes is "confused". He was ignorant and had a cocky attitude. Tests and grading were RIDICULOUS! He LOVES to hear himself talk and his is so disorganized! It's like everything I did was awful in his eyes. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLAS
Worst professor! He is arrogant and belittles people. No matter what you do or how hard you try, everything is always wrong! He gives no feedback and doesn't care about his students. Only wrote the word "confused" on papers I somehow failed. Tests are impossible and you can never do well on them. I hated him. Do not take him. Plus no electronics!
AWFUL! He doesn't help. Failed me on every assignment. One sided and loves to hear himself speak. Had to drop the course because he wouldn't help me succeed even when I asked numerous times for help. He doesn't allow you to go to the bathroom or have electronics. Worst person I've ever met.
Everyone who is complaining about bathroom/devices is 100% right, he doesn't like people leaving class and he doesn't allow any electronics (laptops, phones) during class. He lectures the whole time too. He can get a little repetitive sometimes sometimes in the lectures, but if you take notes and do the reading/summary assignments it's not too bad.
If you are interested in taking any political science course, don't take it with Ricketts. Class is very lecture heavy and boring. What is said about having devices and using the bathroom in his class is very true. He loves to hear himself talk and does not stop for anything. The work for class is pretty much useless and pathetic.
I went into this class really nervous because of the reviews Ricketts has on this site. But, it turns out that this is not a difficult class to pass at all. Literally all you have to do is copy what he writes on the board and study just that for the exams. The most annoying part of the class was the required weekly reading of Gibbon
The name of the class is very misleading. If you are not a political major and want to take an entry level poli sci class to learn about this subject, take American Government, not this class. Ricketts is a nice guy and very smart, but teaches very old school. Gives way too much work. Weekly summary/readings of Gibbon plus a book report and tests!
I took his American Government class back in the Spring of 2012. Class was difficult at first but if you study what he writes on the board youll do fine. I ended up with a C because I wasnt serious at first. Failing the fist exam was a huge wake up call. After that I put my head in the game and was determined to pass. Thats what you need do.
He's a smart guy, no doubt about it. But what everyone else says rings true here. Very lecture heavy and never posts anything online. There are also few chances to raise your grade and the fact that his feedback is really vague doesn't help.
Ricketts overall I think is a great professor. I enjoyed the way he taught though it was incredibly lecture heavy. Though the class falls short because there is an insane amount of reading. From the first day of class you will find yourself reading hundreds of pages of textbooks. I stopped doing them but I still got a good grade via quizzes.
Worst professor at RVCC!! Lectures and very long and repetitive. He also provides no opportunities for extra credit and only grades students on 3 tests and an essay. He also does not provide clear feedback and his tests are impossible. Avoid taking this class at all costs!
Old school lecture and paper notes. Large amount of readings a week, hard grading, mild tangents during lectures. Be ready to double down and do work outside of class.
This is the worst professor I have ever had at any college. He is old and doesn't use tech at all. Refuses to post anything on Canvas. Readings from some stupid book that isn't relevant to course material every week and they're like 100 pages each week. Horrible grader, no feedback and basically just stands and talks nonsense. Also homophobic
Worst professor ever. Very pompous and loves to hear himself talk. 90% of class is him rambling about random information that doesn't apply to class. Weekly readings are TORTURE. Summarizing 100+ pages a week of the most boring and confusing book ever.Very old fashioned. If he wasn't the only one teaching PoliSci rn no one would be in that class.
Start studying very early for tests. Don't be afraid to reach out to him. Tests are very hard. Currently taking the class and it's challenging. He's respectful to students and usually very understanding. Use outside sources to study like videos and make flash cards.Make sure to study his lectures and make study groups
I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS PROFESSSOR! He lectures the whole class. He does not update canvas at all. When he writes on the board or writes you feedback on papers, you will have a hard time reading his handwriting. Class is based on 3 tests and 1 paper of either 7-page book review or a 10-page research paper.
Every review basically hit the nail on the head. Ricketts is a smart guy and very knowledgeable, but talks way too much. Has trouble getting to the point. Extremely lecture heavy, only grades based off of like 3 tests + 1 10 page paper. Handwriting is hard to read. He's way too old fashioned. Never allowed to have phones on desk, never used canvas
This is an old fashioned class; No laptop notes, lots of handouts, and barely anything posted on canvas. I enjoyed the class, but the biggest issue for me was the final. It covers the entire semester and we didn't receive a study guide or a review day, but to be fair we did get a chance to ask questions. If you're up for a challenge, go for it.
Pay attention to lectures and notes. He gives very interesting lectures and is extremely knowledgeable.
Professor Ricketts can be a nice and funny guy but when it comes to his class all he does is talk. You are assigned to write summaries of The Federalist papers, but these summaries are not graded. Grade is based off 3 test, a paper and the final. Was going to drop class but decided to talk with him instead, but got shut down. Had to take the F :(
Glenn Ricketts is definitely old fashioned and intelligent, but he wants the students to work hard outside of class. He does like to listen to himself talk a lot. He also does not give a chance for extra credit. This class was difficult and required most of my attention for the fall semester, and I was barley able to focus on my other classes.
Just don't. Professor Ricketts needs to retire he has everyone ask to use the bathroom which is just annoying. If you are a bad test taker just don't take this professor. This was my least favorite course of the semester. He acts like his class is the only one you are taking dodge this one.
He was asked about the gender pay gap and claimed that women "just like to stay home more". Either he doesn't understand how unions work or he is painting a misleading picture of how they operate. Does not use any powerpoints and has long meandering lectures that lead to nowhere. Do not take this professor if you aim to learn anything about PoliSci
Very outdated teaching methods. Spends the whole class talking about irrelevant information that does not pertain to class. If you can avoid this class, I would recommend doing so.
If you are required to take American Govt & Politics for your program requirement, don't take it with Ricketts. Grade is based off of only (three) hour exams, a final exam, summaries of The Federalist Papers, and a book review. He LOVES to hear himself talk all the time and has students ask to use the bathroom. Avoid this class at all costs!
Ricketts has an old-fashioned teaching style, but his lectures are insightful if you're willing to put in the work. The heavy reading load can be a slog, but unstuck ai helped me stay on top of it. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
he's old school. he said "you have to raise your hand up if you need go to bathroom..."
Terrible teacher. try to avoid his class at all costs!!!!
Worst professor EVER!!!! You have to raise your hand to use the bathroom. Sorry, I didn't think I was back in Elementary school. And he will call you out on it! He is very old school, is a VERY harsh grader, and just rambles about nonsense. I do not know how he still has his position here, but it needs to get TAKEN AWAY. Do NOT take his class.
Do not be discouraged by these reviews, passing Professor Ricketts class is very possible. I will say I learned a lot from his class. However, it is also extremely difficult. 100% the hardest class I have ever taken at RVCC, but if you're up for the challenge I say go for it. Professor Ricketts is a very harsh grader so be warned.
If you really enjoy political science and history, then you'll enjoy this class to some extent. However, if these subjects aren't your bread and butter, you may struggle in this class. Professor Ricketts is a very traditional lecturer and harsh grader, especially compared to other professors at RVCC. Pay attention to his lectures and you'll be ok.
My class started with 16 students and ended with 4. Terrible.
Just terrible. Hardest class I have taken at RVCC. Was rude and did not offer any extra credit. It almost seemed like he did not care about his students success at all. Also, by the end of the semester there were only 5 of us left.
I recommend him if you dislike the curriculum being disrupted by class participation, he's a very traditional professor who doesn't use electronics during the class period. It's very easy to follow along, it's just the work load that gets you if your other classes have a lot of assignments — be prepared for Edward Gibbon.
worst. professor. ever. i have always had an interest in gov and poli, this class took away any and all passion i had for it. take any other prof if you can, save yourself.
