No real textbook, notes were good, exams very reasonable (considering its adv. organic chem), Sammis is cool. Too bad he is married.
Brilliant professor! Knowledgeable, crystal clear, and takes extra lengths to make sure that students are able understand key concepts. My favourite professor at UBC, amazing.
He's a genius! If you pay attention (its not hard, he's pretty interesting), you'll probably do well. Talks VERY fast though, so be prepared to take some really fast note taking. Amazing prof to have when learning organic chemistry.
Next to the CSP class, the Drs. Henning & Sammis combination for Chem123 was brilliant...we ended up with the highest average. Notes? Nope. Examples? A lot. How do you learn? With examples! He definitely recommended you preread (and I do too, though I didn't do it) but with all the examples we did in-class, you'll grasp the stuff anyway. HR!
Definately one of the best classes you will take if you are in chemistry. he's the man
i just had to comment on what a great prof he is. He explains rules and concepts thoroughly and is willing to go over ideas until you understand them.
Awesome prof! nice, approachable and patient; he talks a bit fast in lecture though, but if u listen to him, the concepts are clear! actually cares about students' learning and willing to help you until you understand; definitely recommended! the best prof i've encountered so far
He's the man, enough said.
Teaches everything with great clarity. Although substitution reactions were kinda rushed cuz I think we were running short on time.
He really cares for his students - he'll answer your questions without making you feel inferior etc. He's fun-loving (we had ice-cream on the last lecture!). MUST COME TO CLASS - because his slides are not everything, there's also inclass notes. he's an awesome professor.
best prof. ever. he uses models effectively. he knows his stuff. and a bonus, his love for organic chem definitely shines through. just makes you want to learn more organic chem.
Hes good. good teacher to have if ur going for a+
Really? Oh no, I missed the ice cream. But a great prof, does lots of examples so really prepares you for the final (which is still hard because the first half of the course is just that way).
HE'S AWESOME!go to his office hours, its like having mini-lectures and you even get COOKIES. He really really cares about his students and tries his best to make the material clear. You will love him!i've never met a prof who cares this much for his students
He's an awesome prof! He explains everything so well and uses different teaching techniques so the material is understandable. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well in his class.
Great Prof. and person. He's very helpful and is willing to go the extra mile for you to understand the material. Go to his office hours, it's extremely helpful if you can't absorb all the material in lectures. Best Prof I've ever had.
Totally awesome professor. really cares about his students. I would highly recommend attending his lectures... even if you are in a different section.
Most amazing prof ever!!! Seriously. So nice and clear with his explanations. He's a pretty funny guy too.
I skip my own class (with prof. Rogers) to go to his! He teaches in such an efficient way that you completely understand the material, you know how to approach problems, and you have fun! I really couldn't stand my own prof, but Sammis make organic chem look so easy and I became so much more interested after attending his lectures!
Best. Prof. Ever. Dr. Sammis is pretty much the epitome of a fantastic teacher. Cares deeply about his students and their learning. Also he's good looking, but that's beside the point.
He is awesome! I actually learn in his classes and understand most of it. He goes over everything after he finishes teaching that section and makes a timeline thing that we can follow to answer questions. He is my favorite professor! I read the textbook to study for the final and I actually understand it all because he taught it so well.
He's crystal clear in his class, and although organic chemistry is difficult, he made it seem like it could actually be tackled and made me feel like I could actually succeed in this course. He's funny, and approachable. Explains things really well, and if the class doesn't understand the way he explained it, he explains it in a different way too.
fantastic teacher!!! he really cares about his students. You can see him after class, go to his office hours, or email him and he will always respond with such clear answers. By far the best first year science teacher i had this year!!
Cant stress enough about how much I love this guy. Skipped my class (Lekhi) to go to his. SO WORTH IT, also hes quite the looker.
He is extremely helpful and great at explaining organic materials. One of the best profs at UBC no doubt. So smart!
Dr. Sammis is the best chem prof one can encounter in first year or otherwise. Your hard earned tuition money will not go to waste if you're in his class. If not, come anyway.
one of the best professors at ubc!
As a chem student interested in organic chem, I would say he is the best organic chemistry prof in UBC. Knows his organic stuff well and knows how to convey to students clearly yet concisely. More essentially, Sammis has a warm and helpful personality that everyone likes to communicate with him. Gonna miss him after I graduate this year.
This guy's a legend. Student-friendly and explains things very well when asked; entertaining fellow jokes often. Recommend
Fantastic prof! Explains concepts clearly and concisely, and posts all lecture slides which is really helpful. Best organic prof, highly recommend
Go to this class even if you're not registered. Professor Sammis was exceptional. Alongside excellent teaching and intriguing lectures he effectively taught organic chemistry in a way that was easily understood, at a good pace, yet always was open to answer questions. He explains concepts using memorable and often hilarious analogies.
I love him.
This guy is amazing. Go to his section just to learn the ochem! He made it such a breeze. He does a ton of practice/review problems in class that are very helpful for learning the material. He teaches things in a very concise, clear manner. And he is super nice and can be funny at times!
Loved him! Makes lecture very interesting, and is funny too! Also, he's very welcoming in office hours. I wish he taught for the whole term. I'll miss him.
He is the best prof I had in first year. He is really helpful and wants his students to do good. He makes organic chemistry fun and easy! Students from other classes usually come to his lectures, he is that good.
Hard course, but definitely doable. Professor Sammis, more than any professor that I have had before, has a passion for teaching and loves chemistry; it was a pleasure to take a course from him.
Easily the best prof I've had. In looks and teaching skills :P He is great at explaining concepts And is very approachable in his office hours.
Extremely helpful prof, really tries to make sure students understand the material. I feel he sometimes moves a little too fast, but just raise your hand if you're confused and it'll be all good. The final exam was pretty difficult though even though I'd done as much practice as I could and made sure to seek help when I needed. Overall great guy.
Extremely clear lectures, use of models during class makes organic chemistry so easy to visualize. Useful mnemonic devices, key concepts explained. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Listens to and answers questions very well. Engaging lectures. He made me enjoy organic chemistry. Highly recommended.
Quite clear, goes a bit fast in class. He doesn't put all the info on the lecture slides so I need to take notes, but he talks so fast that I can't keep up. Other than that, everthing else is great.
The best prof i ve ever had. Concepts are clearly explained.
FANTASTIC PROF! one of the best at UBC, even if you don't have him, make it a point to go to his lectures!!
BEST PROF EVER
SUPER helpful prof! He let us know exactly what we needed to know/didn't need to know for the final exam. He has amazing and funny analogies as well as testable examples in lectures.
He wasn't even my prof for this course but I still ended up going to his classes every week. He explains organic chem very clearly and is so helpful!! Absolutely amazing prof!
He was the best professor I had in first year. He explains organic chemistry so well, and his notes were so helpful. He was clear and told us exactly what we needed to know. The workbook he made was so helpful also.AMAZING TEACHER!!
Great prof, great explainer and tries his best to hold office hours despite his schedule. Highest mark in my first semester and definitely a top 2 prof. Guy is so damn smart and hilarious.
Superb?? I actually am enjoying chemistry with this professor . That means a lot.
The best
Awesome prof. You will actually enjoy taking this course if he is your prof. Answers questions and super clear when he lectures about material.
He is amazing!!! Best Chem prof!!!!! Words can not describe how good his class was!!! He is so patient when you ask question and he will try his best to make sure you understand it!!
There are not too many profs at UBC that are down to earth and understanding. Good prof, and a good person.
The best prof you will ever have in UBC. Passionate about chemistry but not overbearing. He understands students; he can teach and research at the same time (which is really rare!)
HANDS DOWN THE BEST. Understands students and how to teach so they actually pay attention and absorb material/ WANT to learn. Friendly, relatable, incredibly knowledgable. I was terrified to take Chem after not taking it for a couple years... made Chem not only enjoyable but also made it make sense
probably the best thing that has ever happened to me.
AMAZING professor. Clear and concise and never makes a student feel bad for asking questions. Makes you look forward to class. All the material was explained incredibly well and he was organized and always willing to help. Hands down the best professor at UBC. Attend his lectures!!
A very enthusiastic and passionate chemistry professor. Clearly explains concepts, so that everyone can easily understand. Would highly reccomend. Also, very charming.
Goes over topics and stops the lecture to review topics that are hard to understand.
Professor Sammis is one of, if not the best, profs i've had at UBC. He's very clear in his lectures and super helpful if you come by his office hours. His exams are extremely fair, and if you go to class, you're guaranteed to get at least a B-. I highly recommend taking him if you have the chance!
Great Prof. He sometimes uses "odd" analogies, but they work. Very clear, understandable language in his lecture. He somehow takes the most challenging of concepts and boils then down to a point where they become astoundingly straightforward. He's definitely an example of a prof who is equally adept at teaching as he is with his research.
Most clear professor I had. Skipped a different section and attended his (sorry for taking a seat), his classes are always full and there's clearly a reason why
The perfect professor. Not inspirational or too funny, but no one will teach you as well as he will.
Prof Sammis is hands down the best prof I've ever had in uni so far, his lectures are very clearhelpful; he makes sure everyone understands the concept before moving on (but doesn't take too much class time answering questions). Very clear with what's expected on exams. If you go to class and pay attention the class is not difficult at all.
His lectures are super informative and interesting to listen to! If I had been with another professor for chem 123, I probably would have failed. But thanks to Glenn, he was able to clearly present the material we needed to know on the final with enthusiasm and helpfulness. Our lecture hall was full to the point where people had to sit in aisles.
Dr. Sammis is an extremely succinct, helpful, engaging, and empathetic prof. Lectures are very informative and are presented in a clear, concise manner. The pace may be a bit fast but he clarifies any misconceptionsquestions in office hours, which are extremely helpful. Highly recommend this amazing prof! :)
Great prof, very kind, energetic, and always willing to help. You need to attend his class, as the textbook is useless. He goes quick but makes everything you need for exams is covered. Office hours (esp. around exam time) are extremely helpful. I would have failed if I didn't have him!
Hands down he is the O CHEM GOD.
BEST PROF AT UBC
Awesome guy, his lecture notes are clutch
Glenn was the best professor I've had at UBC. His lectures were so engaging, his office hours so helpful and he was extremely encouraging. The way he explained concepts made them very easy to understand.
great prof, not the best like people have said, but still decent compared to other profs
He is a really good prof but you need to attend lectures and take notes to get a good mark cause his slides are pretty much empty and he either explains things or writes down on the projector which he never posts online. But in terms of explaining material and concepts he is one of the better ones in Chem 123.
Clear, knowledgeable, organized, funny!
Seriously, Dr. Sammis is legit the best chem prof. Funny, kind, SO succinct, always encourages students/tells us not to stress, and has this incredible way of simplifying every hard concept into something that's easy to understand, which is rare. Yep, he's as good at teaching as he is with his research. Will take a class with him again!!!!
Dr. Sammis is an amazing lecturer. He makes all the concepts clear and concise & always encourages questions. It's a real shame he's not going to teach CHEM 123 for a while though
Hard course but amazing prof!
Just unreal. So organized with his lectures and super clear with his explanations. Really makes going to class enjoyable.
Very good
He is a fantastic professor who cares a lot about his students and is ready to answer even the tiniest question you may have. Exams are VERY fair so make sure to do all the homework. Quizzes are just a grade boost.
HE IS A VERY VERY NICE PERSON BUT NOT AN EFFECTIVE TEACHER. HE HELD OFFICE HOUR FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT GET GOOD GRADE OF THEIR MIDTERMS AND GAVE THEM ADVICE ABOUT WHAT TO DO NEXT. BUT! HIS MIDTERM PRACTISE IS SO EASY BUT! THE REAL EXAM IS VERY VERY DIFFICULT.
Took 213 with him and it was amazing. He was completely a fair grader and had a pretty high average before the final. He expects you to study the material well, and if you do the tests are easy and straightforward, exactly what you'd think. He is kind, reasonable, one of my favourite profs to date.
Best Chem prof I had. Really sad I can't just keep taking Chem with him because he makes concepts so clear and gives so many practice problems you can easily study. Loved his class
PROF SAMMIS IS AMAZING, BUT HE HAS VERY DIFFICULT EXAMS, I FAILED THE COURSE, COULDN'T GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS BECAUSE IT WAS ALWAYS FULL
LAST CLASS WAS TODAY AND IM SAD THAT I'LL NEVER GET A PROF LIKE HIM AGAIN :'(
The best prof I've had at UBC. Lectures are super engaging, and he's very accessible, either by email, before/after class, and office hours. Gives lots of practice questions to ensure a good understanding of the material, and his tests are very fair: not super easy, but definitely doable. I wish he could teach me ochem for the rest of my life.
Professor Sammis is literally the best. My group chat with my friends is literally titled "Glenn Sammis Fan Club". He's a real g.
Nice professor with excellent teaching skills, give a pretty high mark for all exams.
absolutely the best chem prof. you are lucky if you can have him as your teacher
Amazing prof. People who complaining about the hard exam is just because they didn't study. Exams are fair. He is the best
The best Chem prof I've ever had! Always looked forward to going to his classes. Exams are fair but you have to work for a good grade.
Professor Sammis is an amazing, amazing teacher. This is my first time giving a review on this website - I never actually do this. Last semester I took CHEM 223 and the prof wasn't good at all, I justtt passed and I thought I sucked at ochem. But Dr. Sammis taught me so so well that I got an A+ on the midterm. He is an amazing professor!!!
If you have the opportunity to be in his class do it! He was easily my favourite professor this term and made it clear and fun for someone who isn't great in chemistry. He's the best at answering questions and never makes anyone feel bad for asking things in class.
Professor Sammis deserves all the praise he can get. Explains concepts clear and concise. Reviews concepts regularly in class and makes the effort to be funny.
Lectures were well organized and occasionally contained some fun chemistry trivia. Definitely recommend attending both his lectures and office hours for organic chemistry.
Prof.Sammis really tried to break down tough concepts in chemistry and explain them clearly, sometimes with humor. He always welcomed questions and would be willing to help students even outside office hours. Super nice guy, solid prof!
Sped through lectures so our section was often ahead. As a result he used a class at the end of each ch to do practice problems. This was ok but I wish he slowed down instead since he kinda glazed over some topics. His slides are also very sparse, had to supplement w/ baseline slides, eChIRP, OHs :/ But he's a very kind approachable person.
Dr. Sammis had good office hours and was able to clear doubts on lecture content or the problem sets very well. I would really recommend going to the office hours because he speeds up the lecture content and usually is ahead of other classes. He is very clear and good at teaching. Recommended for Organics.
He explains things clearly and goes through a lot of practice problems in class. CHEM123 is not a hard class with reasonable grading schemes and tests. As long as you attend lectures, do the problem sets and practice problems it will be an easy A
He works through the material much faster than other sections, then goes back and reviews, which is super helpful! He teaches in a way that is easy to understand. He really cares about his students, and never makes them feel dumb for asking a question. Would highly recommend attending his lectures even if you are registered for another section!
Dr. Sammis gives the best lectures ever. Love hearing him talk and he made chemistry overall more fun and enjoyable. Goat!
He has a fast pace which I really liked, but if you like a slower pace go for Stirchak. Sammis was my favourite prof because he is charismatic, engaging, and explains things well. His pace is fastest out of all profs but that gave our section more time for review which I liked. Slides make 0 sense if you miss the lecture, but overall he's fantastic
He is absolutely amazing, does an amazing job at explaining the OChem section and put in a lot of effort to make the exams fair and the lectures enjoyable. The true GOAT of Ochem. He is the reason I am specializing in chemistry and pursuing synthetic organic chem in future studies.
Very charismatic, energetic, and engaging Prof. A no BS kinda guy. Review concepts prior to lectures because he goes fast. However; the rapid lecture pace can be beneficial for review sessions before midterms/final.
The actual GOAT in organic chemistry. His lectures are mesmerizing and I attended every single one of them. Mind you that I have a tendency to not show up to lectures. Everything that he says stays in your head, it's like magic. I bought his book on amazon, never used it but hopefully I can get his autograph. He is genuinely a hero in chemistry.
One of the best chem profs at UBC. Makes lectures fun and interesting, and makes an effort to ensure concepts are understood. goat.
Sammis is the absolute goat of chemistry. Makes lectures fun and exciting, has great and very in depth office hours, often stays behind to properly explain concepts if you didn't get it during lecture. Funny and caring, and even explains concepts that are way beyond the course content if you ask. Straight up the best prof in the chem department
He made OCHEM interesting to me
A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Never knew someone could be so good at teaching. He is so knowledgeable and genuinely cares about his students. He teaches at the perfect pace and his lectures are always so interesting. 10000/10
Glenn is the MVP of ubc ochem imo! had him for 123 and 233, incredible both times. classes are tough but he makes it better. good lectures and he tries to make them more interesting, super nice and you can tell he cares about your success. highly recommend him if you need to take ochem
He is the best prof I've ever had. He's caring and explains concepts in clear and thorough terms. I appreciate how he follows pedagogy and doesn't dumb things down for us. He shares why we care about concepts and relates them to real-world examples. 1.5-hour lectures feel like 15 minutes, and I am always excited for class. He's made me love o-chem.
Professor Sammis was one of the greatest profs I ever had in UBC. His lectures are amazing and fun with lots of facts that make organic chemistry fun. His office hours are awesome.
Tough Course but Sammis made it fun:) He broke up heavy lectures by taking breaks for fun facts and "trivia" and cultivated a class atmosphere where no one was afraid to ask questions. Sammis was also super accessible outside of class and made time to help you out if you were confused, which made this course so much more doable. Amazing prof!
Not a lot homework. Course had hard quizzes. Exams hard so pay attention in lecture and ask questions. To do well requires lots of outside practice. Talks a bit fast though but Dr. Sammis explains things really well when you need extra clarity. Very captivating lecturer. Makes orgo chem enjoyable.
If you see him in any section and in any class you need to take.. TAKE IT. He's such a good prof that you'd be an idiot to choose any other section over his. He makes things simple, explains well and is overall such a good person. Loved going to his office hours just to sit in an listen. His section does the best out of rest. He's such a joy :)
He is the BEST prof at UBC. His tests are really REASONABLE, and I love him so much!!! Definitely will take his classes again.
The best professor I've had at UBC! Captivating lectures interspersed with real-world trivia and breaks. Great office hours, will go until all questions are answered. Truly an incredible lecturer, explains everything well, will often use hands and models to visualize certain topics. If you have the chabce to take a class with him, DON'T PASS IT UP!
glenn sammis' lectures are never boring! he's a great prof
I LOVE GLENN HE IS SUCH A CUTIE the class sucks tho but glenn is awesome
Dr. Sammis is a fabulous professor. He does an excellent job in teaching complicated concepts by using memorable analogies and breaking down concepts. His demeanour and the way he carries himself in the classroom makes him very approachable. He sets a standard for how UBC profs SHOULD be teaching.
Sammis is THE ochem goat. Even though he goes through some of the content a bit fast at times, he'll always answer questions thoroughly if students are confused. He makes 90 minute lectures engaging by relating the mechanisms to lab procedures and telling us fun facts. 10/10 recommend!!
I hate chem, but he made it interesting enough that I could not only pay attention but I was actually following along and understanding the course. The teaching team this term was overall really good, the tests were pretty much exactly what we learned in class and was on the practice tests, and both the in person and online lectures were engaging.
An engaging and charismatic professor who makes organic chemistry enjoyable. Lectures are fast-paced but captivating. Utilizing resources like Unstuck study alongside the course material can help boost your understanding.
lowk the best lecturer i'm ever gonna have at UBC. i usually don't really care if lectures are engaging or not but this guy is so charismatic it just makes ochem seem like the coolest damn thing. funny dude also. one downside is: how is a chem prof cooler than me? makes me sad :(
easily the best prof i've taken at ubc. if you have to take chem233 (which is by no means an easy course) do it with sammis. always open to questions, gives clear explainations, lots of office hours. i have friends who've hated ochem and came out of his class loving it.
the lebron james of teaching organic chemistry
I can singlehandedly say I would transfer majors for this prof if he'd take me as his phd. The absolute best chemistry (definetly) prof/prof in general (possibly) I've ever had in my life. He somehow makes lectures fun while making me actually understand and want to learn the material all in 50 mine. Absolutely love the guy 100% recommend.
Amazing prof! He is so lovely to learn from! He makes every lecture fun and interesting, and inspired his students to be chemists! We love Glenn Sammis!
Arguably the best professor at UBC - so attentive and knowledgeable in all concepts, it's truly a pleasure to learn from him.
literally the best ochem prof u can get. he does handwritten notes with the class, LOVE. super approachable, encourages questions, and the pace is perfect. great at what he does. reviews in lecture before exams. id go as far as saying he's UBC's best prof
Absolute beauty. Did horrible in 121, slightly better in 123, and currently cruising through 233 with high 80's and a new outlook on life. Never even went to this guy's office hours, but his lectures are so engaging he's always answering questions, and has great fun facts along the way. Undisputed ochem GOAT. 🐐🐐🐐
literally the best prof ever! very passionate and sweet person, who cares about his students. we love glenn sammis!
Glenn is 100% my favourite prof at UBC. His lectures are super engaging, and his little "trivia" anecdotes are so funny and makes o-chem really interesting. He clearly cares a lot about his students and I will surely miss him.
I wish he was my dad.
Super kind professor. Clear lectures, lots of time for questions, and an engaging teacher.
THE ABSOLUTE GOAT!!!! lectures are so engaging and he's so kind to his students, genuinely cares about all of us not only as learners but as people too. i had an amazing experience in his class :)
THE GOAT OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. i hate this class with every fibre of my being but glenn sammis is the greatest prof of all time. very digestible lectures + he made everyone feel super comfortable w asking questions during class. also he's funny. if you have the chance to pick him as your prof do it immediately
there should be a fan club for this man
Literally the best prof I've had! I took Chem 121 and 123 and thought I hated chem, but Dr.Sammis made me love it! He is approachable and engaging. I always looked forward to his class!
Loved him in 203!! Made me love ochem so much more and made everything so digestible. Very accessible outside of class and welcomes questions.
Such an amazing teacher, great at explaining, engaging, and making everyone comfortable with asking questions. He's also just a very well rounded person and super kind. I wish there were more classes I could take with him.
Literally the best ochem prof ever. He made ochem so fun to learn and all the lectures so interesting. He gives LOADS of practice problems and truly wants you to succeed. He also encourages everyone to ask questions and will answer them in full detail, even if it's simple. Wish he taught more ochem courses, DEF recommend.
GOAT of chemistry. King of trivia. Prof Sammis breaks down ochem so nicely makes me really enjoy doing it. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. He always welcomes questions during lectures and explain everything really well. His office hours are really helpful and they are worth going just for the vibe.
He's just so good. Not sure what else to say. Loved the lecture and the content, but part of me thinks I loved the content because of his lectures. Best prof I've had so far.
The Lebron of chemistry. He's genuinely so good at teaching the material and keeping the lectures entertaining. Super good at reading the lecture hall and understanding the needs of his students. Tests in this class get returned to you in three days and they are super fair. Have fun in this class!
Clear explanation, fun trivias and responses to questions are great. The expectations and assumptions for this course are made clear and concepts are explained with adequate amount of detail/mechanism. Made me respect him more knowing he doesn't like bio (LOL). Appreiated how he kept the carbohydrtae section chem focused
