She's a crazy lady! Has high expectations and wants participation. She likes giving out many in-class writing assignments, where you only have about 30-40 min to complete. She's nice at times, but a little crazy.

Horton is great! She sometime get a bit weird but only when we dont do the work, so we workt real hard for her and she turned out to be so nice, invited us to have conferences and just everything! Cool lady! Take her class. Learn all about stuff.

what does this lady take in the morning, she is always pumped up for class! she gets upset at the class for not being as excitied about english. if you want to get an easy A then take her but you'll have to make an effort to come to class, its boring!
Fact: I learned a lot of useful skills in her class, but anyway she was such a hard teacher and little too narrow minded to keep up with!! I don't know why she stays in PCC. Very academic and maybe very fair teacher in that way, but anyway she is HARD.

she doesn`t help students to pass her class. she doesn't give students grade a.Last semester only two of the 25 students got a. During her class,if you take her class, you must be sure she is a feminist.
To get a good grade: talk a lot in class, feed her back. Talk to her previous students to know the answers. Biased towards immigrants. No grammar in this class. Gets upset rather easily. Good stories from life. ESL33B=Eng1A class in this case.
I guess...she is a kind of a teacher who you will be thankful after a year or 10 years later. If you are in her class, listen to her lecture and try to do your best in all the work she assign!! The things you learned will really back to you LATER.

Very difficult. Did not agree with some of the topics she choose for us to write about. Also, I never felt comfortable asking questions in class because of her tendency to raise her voice at students, which can seem very embarrassing.

If you can speak the english language this will be a wonderful class for you to take with Ms. Horton. She is great, but does not tolerate laziness or B.S. If you are not a serious student, then look elsewhere!!!

She seems polite, but what comes out from her mouth is mean. Don't teacher much on class, don't get much chance speak in the class, one of the reason is because what she talks doesn't relate to what she is teaching...most of time.

Prof. Horton certainly has her standards, but passing/succeeding in her class shouldn't be too difficult for a serious student. Some felt like she was always shooting down their opinions, but she was just playing devil's advocate. She spent time with those who actively wanted help, even held a special meeting for them. Dedication will get you far.
SUPER hard teacher...at least 70% would fail in her class.. dropped her class.talks alot..always make you feel bad...don't expect A,B,C on your papers..EXTREMELY UNFAIR...she will let u pass if she likes you...

Passionate about teaching and seems to care alot about her student. The class was fun, educational with easy quiz.
she is really harsh upon her students. she scolds us and picks on us. She can't tolerate different ideas in the class. Anyway she thinks she is always right. She strucken down your confidence, at makes you study hard. but she will become quite easy on you at the end of the semester while no one seems to able to pass her class
Hard to pass her class . You need to work hard. She has strong confidence, but I did learn a lots from her class. Take her if you are work hard person. The trick to get a good grade, you need to finished everything she assigns in time. Also, Do what ever she say.If You are really want to learn ,and don't care much at grade.

This teacher does not teach, she lectures like she's some super critical parent. She just scolds at you the whole time in class. This is not productive. We don't have discussions of the work or tests or anything of that nature. If you want to learn something, don't take this teacher. If you think your ego needs a beating, then by all means.

Under a lot of negative rating, I still want to say Horton is not a bads teacher, she has a high standard of English. If you serious have a good ability in English, you can take him. One of possible to get A if yous tudy and try a lot!

well i think she is a great teacher. i took her for English 1A and 1B. i like her personality and i feel she is interested in what we learn as students. of course be prepared to work..its not an easy grade but she is a great teacher! i recommend this classs for the ones who are ready to work!..not for the ones looking for an easy grade.
A very open minded woman for her age. though you need to understand her demands and show passion in your work to get a high grade.

She keep made me write the thesis over and over again! and I show the thesis to my very smart friend, and she said is was so good, but when I show to this teacher she say is not good! This is a ESL 33B class and the main purpose of this class is to learn to do research paper but she NEVER teaches you to do that! Just do some stupid writing and reading in the class!!!

we learned how to do research from the libarian, not her. The MLA format is learned from the handbook. She is probally a knowledge professor, but doesn't teach us. Maybe she s not interested in teaching us. our class hours are usually 30 minutes shorter than it was scheduled.
She has very high expectations so be sure to work extra hard. However, she's not very organized and sometimes, it's hard to understand what she wants. Class time is usually shorter than allocated. To pass this class, make sure you spend a lot of effort in those research papers.
This teacher surprised me when i went to her office for help. i was there for some comments on how to imporve my paper. Guess what she said? She asked me to looked through my paper and her standars which were listed hand out and found out the reasons by myself. If i could find out what problems i had, did i still need to go to her?? wired..
terms of the person, Horton, i believe may be one of the hardest teacher in PCC. However, you have to push yourself. Take this routine if you are courageous enough-Horton for 33B, Meier for 1A. Get two A, I promise, you will have no problem going to Berkeley.
She is one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. She doesn't really offer help either she would rather you "figure it out yourself" The in class essays are VERY difficult and are different topics from in class talks. This is also coming from someone who got an A in Eng1A during an accelerated course.

The class is difficult and she demands a lot from her students. If English is your obsession then you will have a good time. A lot of reading and essays. You have to dedicate a lot of time. She encourages us to ask for help if we need it.

what a useless professor!she has never given any quiz so far, but she gave a horrible assignment(we have to write at least 6 pages in an hour). I want to mention that ESL 136 is a speaking and listening class but she never give us a chance to talk just only a written assignment. I beg you guy do not take her class or you will regret in whole life.

I dropped this class early on because of her policy on grammar. Any kind of grammatical error on one of her papers results in an automatic "D" grade for that paper.

Professor Horton is one of the best professors I have had at PCC. THIS IS A COLLEGE COURSE, and Prof. Horton treats it as such! Be very active in discussion and take advantage of her help and comments. If you're a decent writer and willing to put in the work, definitely take this class! I got a lot more out of it than I ever thought possible.
She's a extremely strict teacher, however students can learn a lot from her classes. Her words sound demanding but you will find out they are helpful.
I don't recommend this professor. Don't take her ESL classes unless you are 100 percent sure that you won't make any grammar mistakes as a ESL students. She won't help you to correct the grammar mistakes you have made at all. I learn nothing from her. I regret it so much.

I have to describe a professor in 350 characters! Impossible! In one word, she is great. First, She believes that there is a world behind a word. If you want to succeed in her class you need to respect that world. Second, she values integrity. You will face your self-concept in her class and you need to develop that if you look for success.
Never take her 33B! She's not strict,She is mean! She refuses to answer any questions of my classmates! If you ask her for help, she will refuse you and blame you as if you made a mistake on purpose to displease her! We ask her questions because we are confused about the lecture! You can never figure out what she writes on the blackboard!

Drops you after three missed classes, grades papers harshly, you need to participate in discussions. Not helpful at all when it comes to revising you're paper. I really liked this class. But you have to put in work. If you are naturally an introvert and really shy, you might want another teacher. She puts a lot of emphasis on class participation. She wants to know you are actually involved and learning. If you want an easy A, this isn't the class for you. If you want a rewarding A, then this is it.
With all my respect to her as a professor, she confuses you or deliberately plays word games with students. Her problem is that she doesn't know how to deliver the material smoothly no mater how hard it is specially in the ESL department where bilingual students have different mentalities towards English! you'll waste your time not recommended.

I loved her! We had to read many different stories and she never lectures, we sit and have a discussion. Very interesting, fun, inspirational.. You will have a few essays to write but she very clearly outlines what she expects from you. Participation is a must. Overall this class is very interesting and she's awesome

No lectures. Need to finish the homework on time, if not you will be in trouble. Tests are Inclass writing. Requires 1 research paper before final. Final is inclass essay also. Tough grader. You'll feel under the pressure from the 1st day. But I like the way she teaches the process of research paper. She's helpful when asking for help
I got good grade, but I don't like her lecture. Teaching grammar is not clear. She uses a short story book and discussion the story a lot. The discussion doesn't connect with grammar nor writing. It is just chatting. Participation is a must. You have to study yourself. I don't recommend her.

The reason i choose her class was because that is the only class left at the time i choosing . She may be very knowledgable but you can't learn anything from her .She teach nothing at all. Engl59 Children's Lit. Changed schedule/syllubus of assignments more than three times. Lecture a lot but some ideas differ from textbook. Textbook gives information and teaches students but professor discusses and opionated differently. Kind but strict. Fair but poor leading. Do not recommend Russel's text. This is a tough class. Don't have many homework but grade is unclear. Don't open a canvas online so it is hard to check how are you doing in class. However, you will learn a lot from her. Recommend her if u want to be prepared for 001A.
I took Professor Horton for Children's Literature and it was my first class at PCC. She was very understanding and caring towards me and was really helpful even after the class ended. However, it is vital that you buy the textbooks, as she is a tough grader and expects you to do your part.
she is a bad teacher. you learn nothing in her class. when you ask something the way she talks back is rude and it comes off as if you dont do the work the way she does you wont pass period. she doesnt accept late work so dont even try to send her an email she wont even read it. dont recommend her.
I took her class thinking that i would learn a lot from a teacher whose said to have a lot and it is a nightmare. She does not like to be asked question about an assignment and will always expect for you to know what she thinks. She avery confusing in the way she teaches, she doesnt give much details and she will not care even if you seem to care.
This professor DOES NOT reply to emails nor take ANY late work. I probably would have learned more from the 3 textbooks she wanted us to get. Anyone who questions or challenges her "lectures" will never hear the end of it. She ends up giving life lesson lectures and treats 1st-year students like they are illiterate morons who just "text" 24/7.
Would only recommend if you want a hard class. Very strict and it is important to attend class because once you miss a class, you stay behind.
She does NOT use Canvas or use e-mail. It is hard to contact her outside of class. She asks her students to buy physical books to annotate a small section of the reading and NEVER use the book again. She gives out an assignment list but she does not follow it. Tough grader when it comes to essays and makes 1st year students feel incompetent.
I would not recommend Professor Horton. I am registered with DSPS with several learning disabilities - she denied my LDs and said my usage of an educational therapist was an act of plagiarism. I will not be taking another course from her.
Professor Horton should no longer be employed by Pasadena city college. Her inability to utilize canvas is ridiculous. Professor Horton will take points off of your assignments for not following a rubric that she has failed to upload. Do not take her offered classes.
