Horrible teacher, who knows where she got her test questions from
she tried but her lectures were long, boring and not too helpful. Also, tests had essays
HORRIBLE! Avoid at all costs!
absolutely Horrible. capital H.
Yes, her lectures are frustrating but the class wasnt that bad if you kept up with the readings in the book (which is written in very simple terms) She is a sweet lady, just probably not the best teacher.
do not take this class with this teacher. awful
Read the book, lectures are boring and you dont have to go. Shes nice, the exams arent bad.
I am confused. The first few weeks i hated her cuz she didnt speak english and her tests are hard as ****, but i somehow managed to get a B+.Its like you have four wrong answers to choose from & u have the least ofthe wrong answers...am i making sense here
Incoherent and inconsistent lectures. Don't expect her lectures to help you, you're going to have to teach yourself. Avoid her if at all possible!
so incoherent, i do not know how she is a "doctor" of anything, it's not even worth going to class sometimes, her lectures pertain to absolutely nothing, she repeats the phrase "am i making sense here" about 50 times per class. Avoid h
ive never been so confused in a class in my entire life
She's funny, but really hard to understand!
this class i thought would be amazing, but is a ton of work. her tests are hard, and even her lectures are hard to understand.
She was a wonderful professor. She explained things clearly, fostered very good discussion, and her tests were not difficult. If you followed the study guides, you had NO problems at all. Anyone who complains simply didn't want to work hard.
Shes a really cool teacher, the people who complain about the class don't ask questions, she's always open to answering anything on your mind. The tests aren't bad as long as you study the study guide she makes.
she is kind of hard to understand becuase she is foreign. however she is funny and the MATERIAL is not that hard. i would say the studyguides are way harder than tests. tests are multiple and t/f, her studyguides are like critical thinking questions. take notes in class and from the book, youre fine
people bash her..but a great class to take. dont have to go, just do the study guide, read the chapters and you'll get an a..just dont expect to retain much
Dr. Lessan was a great teacher. I think that to enjoy the class, you have to have an interest in this subject and you have to pay attention. Not hard at all. I got an A very easily.
Dr. Lessan is a nice lady, but once again a thick accent and a backwards, convoluted way of explaining issues that definitely DONT correspond w/ her syllabus or even her own directions. Don't go to class, except the day before test and do the study guide.
Lessan is a good teacher. Over the summer I was really sick for about 2 weeks. She let me make up all work and helped me out however she could. She is a bit quirky but if you come to class and show her respect she will do a good job teaching you the subject.
Fairly easy class. She's pretty hard to understand, but you get used to the accent after a while. The study guides helped alot.
I had her for a class last year, and i took her again-it was the same thing.I thought the class was hard and i had a bad grade...but i ended up with A.i dont know if she curves alot, or bonus, but i was always surprised how the grades came out.
The class was soooo boring and I was getting so tired of hearing her say "do you understand"? I hated this class with a passion.
She needs to learn to speak and write English. Nothing spoken in class or in textbooks was on the tests.
I took her for two classes social problems and sociology. She is a little difficult to understand for like the first week but thats all. The tests are cake as long as you take notes. I didnt even buy the book for sociology and got an A. Just take notes and its easy.
horrible class!!!! she goes off on pointless tangents, notes are most of the time not useful, and no idea where she gets test questions because they aren't what she teachers or in the book. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
this class was extremely boring. i recommend not taking this class.
I TOOK THIS CLASS IN MY FRESHMAN YEAR AND I GOT AN EASY A..I DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE TEXTBOOK! JUST MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS AND PARTICIPATE..ALL THAT IS IN THE EXAMS ARE USUALLY FROM CLASS NOTES AND DISCUSSIONS..HER ACCENT ISNT THAT BAD EITHER..AT LEAST YOU COULD ASK HER TO REPEAT WHAT SHE SAID..MY BEST LECTURER IN FSU SO FAR!
This class is a little boring, and her tests are a little difficult. She's not as bad as everyone says though.
Shes a nice lady and if you go to class and take good notes the test are easy, you dont need to read the book much at all. Her accent can make it difficult for some to understand.
one of the worst teachers i have ever had.... you automatically fail the class if you miss more than 4 classes because she gives pop quizzes as attendence... test are a lil confusing. cannot understand her at all... only thing you can understand her saying is when she says understand... lol... would avoid her if possible
Her class is interesting, just read the chapter and go to class and you will do fine.
Dr. Lessan made the class very interesting. She is very knowledgable and helpful when asked. She is a little unclear, but she tries to ensure that everybody understands. Tests are straight from the lecture and book. Study and they are a piece of cake. Good class to take if interested in Sociology.
Very nice lady. She's helpful and understanding of circumstances. If you actually LISTEN to her you'll have no problems understanding her- and if you ever need her to repeat something she will. Her tests can be hard but she gives out so much extra credit which helps.
Very sweet lady. Test are hard, but if you go to her and ask for help she totally helps you out. TONS of extra credit.
I love Glorida!! She is an awesome, energetic teacher! With her "commercials of the day" and he repetitive "EY!" He keeps the class entertained and she is very helpful. The key to success in her class is to read the chapters, do the study guide (I usually spready it out by doing like 5 questions a day), and you'll do great in the class.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Her lectures were interesting and thought provoking. She allowed for productive class discussions and she was helpful outside of class. Attendance and the study guides are a must to making a good grade.
got a great attitude.. and is funny
Her accent is just too hard to understand. I tried but eventually just gave up and zoned out. This made her tests hard as lecture notes were very important for success. I will not take any other classes with her nor would I recommend taking this professor. She is a nice lady but accent is just too thick.
Terrible!! She seemed like she knew what she was talking about but the poor lady had no idea how to teach. She would go off on tangents you would not believe. Her lecture notes were not helpful at all. You are better off reading the entire book and never going to class. Would not recommend and if you do get ready to hear "Am I making sense here?"
Dr. Lessan was a great teacher. I would recommend her class. She's very easy to talk to, and if you need her help she will find the time to do it. Knows her stuff and is a sweet, classy women.
A nice lady with a pretty good sense of humor. However, I highly recommend to NOT take her. I did better on the exams that I studied less for and worse on the ones in which I actually read the chapters. Her lectures are useless and as is going to class, which is very boring. If you do have to take her fortunately the paper is a guaranteed A.
She's kinda hard to understand but the class is really easy. The textbook is a waste of money and she posts all her notes on Blackboard so going to class is pointless. She tends to ramble.
The tests are hard, so you must read the book to do well on them. She gives extra credit for coming to class on random days and practice tests count as extra credit. Her lectures do not help much for the test so read the book. There is enough extra credit given to get an A in the class if you read the book.
She's a nice lady, but gets carried away and her tests are difficult if you dont read the book, her study guides don't help too much cause it just random stuff, most of which isnt on the test but if you go every day and get the attendance extra credit and do good on the bogus exams you can get an easy B but if you read you should get an A
Test are somewhat challenging but easily passable if you read the text. Takes attendance @ random 4 xtra credit. Practice test are xtra credit also.Do them!!! Some questions come directly from practice tests. She does have a heavy accent but if you make an effort to understand, you'll get what shes saying. Overall a good professor and VERY HELPFUL!
She is very very hard to understand, she babbles, sometimes I wonder what she is talking about. But the class is not that hard if you actually attend, she give "bogus" quizes which count as extra credit and also takes random attendance for extra credit.
Hard to understand sometimes. Tests are nothing like STudy Guides.
Going to class is useless because her lectures are nothing but a series of ramblings, but you do get bonus points for showing up every now and then. The tests are pretty hard for such simple subject matter.
Great teacher, lectures are entertaining and she is extremely helpful! Go to class everyday, b/c if you need a little boost to get a better grade she will help you out if she knows you were in class. I would recommend any of her classes.
The only point in going to class is to get the bonus points for attendance otherwise its completely useless. Her lectures are long and boring and she is extremely hard to understand. No one knows where she gets the test questions come from because they do not correlate with the textbook, lectures, or her powerpoints. I do not reccommend this class!
HORRIBLE. Do NOT take her for ANYTHING. You can hardly understand her, the tests are incredibly detailed and impossible to study for (the "bogus tests" that you get extra credit for doing have nothing to do with what's on the test, neither do the super lengthy study guides) and the lectures are forever long. Had Christian Vacarro as a TA and he'
Her lectures were impossible to keep up with and study guides never reflected what was on the test and were also very difficult to complete because none of the information was in the book. She does offer a few extra credit opportunities but it barely helped me. The whole semester with her was a blur and i didn't benefit from it at all
Awful teacher. She makes absolutely no sense and ironically her catch phrase is "am I making sense here?" Her tests are difficult and there is no proper way to prepare for them. She teaches nothing in class. Take a different teacher!
If your going to take this class be prepared to read the book. Her lectures are interesting but only like 5% of the test. Its all about the book. There are 4 tests & 4 1 1/2 page essays. It isn't hard if you write a good essay and read the chapters for the test. Go to class for the extra credit. read & try a little. you will get an A
this class is like common sense. i did not touch my text book once, i barely read the online notes but i went to class (although fell asleep almost all the time) and attempted to listen, completing all the extra credit - there is a lot that can help, doing the quizes, again common sense and the paper was easy. The tests were the only hard thing
I pretty much stopped attending this class. I didn't buy the book, but probably should have. I barely looked at the notes, except for when I was cramming. She rambles, everything was about her being Mexican, this is why I stopped showing up. I would rather of been sleeping. Paper was easy, opinion based. Got a B+ overall.
Boring class. She rambles on and had a thick spanish accent. This class was a walk in the park because I have a syg background. Attending class doesn't really help, just make the quizes. You can give her a sob story if you miss one. Easy A. Waste of time.
People make her sound alot worse than she is. Yeah she rambles sometimes but overall very interesting. To get an A:suck it up and read the chapter. Go over the notes, but focus more on chapters, review bogus test because a few questions will be on the real test. Dont do the study guide, really doesnt help much.i did work but id take her again.
This class was easy ,but do not take this class if you want to learn anything. The only thing I can remember about his class is "Do you understand what I'm saying" She says this like a million times. A lot of rambling...
Rambles. A lot. Talks about broader aspects of what the book covers, and then puts nitty gritty stuff on the test. If you print her notes and study them and study bogus tests and skim the chapter it's pretty easy. She gives a lot of extra credit so it's hard not to pass with a decent grade.
this class is awful and you have to go to make quizzes. She gives EC but her study guides suck and so do her lectures half the time you dont even know what she is saying. Dont recommend but its an easy B to get an A you have to read the chapters
Save your money or take this class with a diff. prof if you can.Worst class I've ever taken.Lessan is hard to understand with her mix of Spanish/Chinese accent and her lectures are not worth attending. You're better off reading from the book because most of her test questions come from there and not her lectures. Waste of time.
Not a good teacher. Lectures are pointless. She does't teach what you need to know, she just talks about, well i dont even know what she talks about! Hard class to follow. What is expected of you is not laid out. I had to teach myself the material which is kinda hard. If you have to take this class i suggest you take it with a different teacher!
She rambles so much on her own opinion...study the book a lot and power points...the study guides are also helpful...she gives a lot of extra credit if you attend so make sure you go to class...other then that get used to "you understand what I'm saying" because that will follow about every statement.
Worst teacher ever. Class is torture, it is mandatory and if you miss more than 3 you fail. Bring an ipod because listening to her is pointless, and impossible because her spanglish is inconprehensible. Buy the book and read it. It will be your lifeline as she doesnt teach you anything. Easy Material but pointless common sense. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
She is a sweet lady, but not too great of a professor! She is almost impossible to understand and loves asking, "Do you understand me here?" Her tests are biased towards her viewpoints and even the answers sometimes go against what they book says. Nice lady, but take another professor!
Nice person but unclear about what is expected in the class. Her lectures and online notes were random, so what was expected in the class was uncertain. study guide did not pertain to the test, and you have to read a lot to understand the concepts. i would recommend a different teacher even though she is smart in her field.
It's easy to pass the tests. All you have to do is answer each question as if you are a socialist hippie, and voila! Passing grade. The material is so ridiculously slanted, be prepared for Marxist propaganda and outright lies. Just remember: If someone else's life sucks, it's YOUR fault.
The class itself really isn't very difficult. However she is very slanted and sometimes pretty difficult to understand. She has somewhat of a Mexican/Chineese accent mixed together. However, I would reccomend taking her. Just try to stay on top of your work and you'll get an A no problem.
She's hard to understand and the viewpoint for the class is very socialist and leftist. Just ignore the lectures, read the book and do well on assignments.
These people don't know what they are talking about-she gives many opportunities to answer questions, and she will usually provide you with the very same answer on the quiz/test! She also just gave everyone all A's + B's on our papers! Extra credit regularly. Sweet women, just sit at the front and write what you hear and you'll do fine!
Lessan is disorganized, sloppy, and inconsistent. Her materials and tests are frustrating and she makes lots of careless mistakes. She makes interesting material boring, and her tests are passable only if you can figure out what she is asking. If you bring attention to her mistakes she is defensive and stubborn. This class was TERRIBLE!
If at all possible, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. The study guides are inconsistent with the tests and the textbook is difficult to understand AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!
gets off subject sometimes, but very helpful. go to class she gives extra credit!
This was the absolute worst class. You can't understand her, can't figure out what she is asking on tests and 'assessments' (pop quizzes), and it's so boring. I promise you, you will regret taking Dr. Lessan for sociology.
such a sweet lady! and so funny! it's a lot of studying, but the material is interesting. as long as you attend class, you'll be fine. she gives extra credit too! :)
She's really not that bad! It's kind of hard to get an A because it's 95-100, but an A- or B+ is definitely possible. You have to go to class, she gives random EC for attendance. Just do good on assessments and actually study from lecture notes, power points (online), and the practice tests. You get 5-7 points back on the test.
Gives a lot of extra credit for attendance randomly. Tons of grades. Easy B, atLEAST. Open book assessments and pre-tests. Multiple choice/true-false tests. A little hard to understand, but pretty funny and interesting. She definitely wants you to understand. Don't leave early, esp. on extra credit attendance days.
She is funny and entertaining but her exams were a little tough to be a 1000 level class. She gives tonsss of extra credit, come to class & stay whole time for attendance points. There was one exam where students had accumulated 15pts of E.C. thats a letter grade and a half!
She's very nice and funny but her thick accent makes it hard to understand her sometimes. Her assessments are a bit tough and she spent a LOT of time on theories, but she's pretty helpful and so is the TA
She tells it like it is and is very helpful. Her thick accent can be hard to understand sometimes, but it's a pretty easy class and the teacher really knows what she's talking about
Hard to understand sometimes, but she is helpful. Really helpful TA. If you have a good TA she will help you out a lot.
Very inconsistent and her tests are only difficult because it is nearly impossible to decipher what she is asking. The language/grammar barrier makes tests and written work difficult. TA this semester hardly showed up to class and never responded to questions. Would advise against this class if you want a consistent grade of your deserving.
Had her for intro to sociology. She is boring, extremely useless. Her quizzes are not really related to lectures or the assigned reading. Random attendance and extra credit. Make friends with the TA if you want to get a good grade.
This course required a lot of reading. However I did not read all the materials required and still averaged a B on each exam. After each exam she offers survey's that will give you 10 extra credit points which saved me! There are also discussion boards. Overall it was a fair course, not too hard but not too easy.
She is a great professor, I look forward to going to her class. She makes lectures interesting and gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Anyone can easily get an A in the class if they attend the lectures and do the readings. She has a bit of an accent but she is comprehensible. It is a fun and interesting class, she is very nice and helpful.
Dr. Lessan is one of the funniest professors I have ever had. She makes class interesting and applies it to life today which to me, makes it seem more relevant. Her exams are easy and there's a ton of extra credit opportunities. Just go to class because she takes attendance randomly and if you miss a certain number of classes you automatically fail
Literally I can barely understand this teacher. She has such a thick accent and she refuses to use the microphone. I've gotten Bs on my tests because I read my book instead of going to class; there's no point in going if you can't understand the teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER (I'm currently enrolled in this class, it ends in December.)
Dr. Lessan is a Great and Easy Professor...I've taken multiple classes with her and she is straightforward, gives alot of extra credit and is a good source to use if you plan on going to Law School or Grad School.
As a student with a near 4.0 GPA, I took this class online thinking that I'd receive my normal A. Surprisingly, that was not the case. Not only are the exams annoyingly difficult and specific - but they use materials not mentioned in the textbook. When I mathed out my grade I had a B. She gave me a C. DO NOT take this class if you value your GPA.
she's super nice and is a very helpful teacher. her powerpoints can be pretty boring and hard to follow, but she loves what she teaches. she recognizes who comes to class and who doesn't.
Absolutely terrible. The online textbook (that she wrote herself and then charges you $80 for) is incredibly difficult to follow. Half the material on tests are not even mentioned in the readings. Also, you can't e-mail her for help. You have to talk to an aid first.
She has an accent but is very entertaining, she can get off topic sometimes.. If she doesn't go through everything on PowerPoint make sure you look over them, lecture notes, and read the book
Great easy class. Gives tons of extra credit for attending ESPECIALLY THE TUES. BEFORE TNKSGVING! she gave +10 pts on the final for attending. Her accent is hard to understand but she is nice, helpful, and cares about her students. I just read the textbook (which was easy and actually pretty interesting) and got an A. I highly recommend.
She's a great professor, full of humor. Read the assign chapters before class and pay attention to lectures and you will do fine. Go to class, she gives a lot of extra credit for attendance. Also she is very helpful and encourages conversation throughout lecture.
I am a Biology major and took this class thinking it would be an easy A. It could have been-the material is not so difficult, but this teacher does not teach. She spends all of lecture rambling on about common sense sociology concepts and then all her tests drill you on theories never mentioned in class. Do not take this teacher.
terrible clas... Lectures were full of her trying to be funny and getting through to the students and not at all about the material. She barely covered anything that was on the test. Thought it would be an easy A and interesting but it was my toughest and most dreaded class....
She is a nice lady, but her lectures are very boring and her accent is hard to understand sometimes. She rambles on about the material and most of it is based on her opinion. The tests and assignments are very subjective and not based on factual information. I had trouble staying up in her classes.
worst professor ever
6 discussion boards - 60% of your grade. 4 exams - 40% of your grade. Test questions can be confusing. Extra credit can net you 10 extra points on your exam! DO THE READING and you'll be fine. Great syllabus, easy to follow and clearly defines your assignments and due dates ! Quick to answer emails and post grades.
Claims attendance is mandatory, but takes attendance rarely (solely for EC). Many typos on tests, assignments, and PowerPoint's. Hard to understand. Tests are pretty simple, all MC, but she is very broad on what is on the tests. Gives bogus tests for EC which help, but lectures are long and deviate from the point. Assignments graded toughly also.
Very knowledgeable teacher, accent may trouble some however. Goes off topic easily but tends to wrap things together. Bogus tests in the class before the actual tests give extra credit for the real test, need to read the textbooks and PP slides in order to do well. Random attendence (some EC, some not), 3 at-home assignments + a few in class ones
Thought this was going to be my easy A for the semester but easily became one of the worst classes I have ever taken. She goes on senseless rants in class about the topic but barely teaches the material. The book is confusing and hard to follow and the tests are based on her opinions more than facts.
Tests can be difficult because they are not over the general information taught, but the specifics. Interesting class, but her accent is sometimes hard to understand. She does give quite a bit of EC through bogus tests and attendance.
Readings are often lengthy. Gives extra credit and study guides. Go to class because she has random attendance checks. She is very entertaining and is always willing to help. I also had her for SYG1000.
Dr. Lessan is easily my favorite professor at FSU. She's funny and really sweet, and makes the material easy to learn. She takes attendance, so you need to go to class. She also gives "bogus" tests before the real test which are extra credit, and some of the same questions are on the exam. If you study, the tests are really easy. No trick questions
So difficult to understand and very unclear about what she wants you to study for the tests. Alot of practical application questions and not clear definitions for tests.
Prof Lessan is easily one of the worst professors ive had at FSU. Very hard to understand in class and had poorly written tests. She is unclear on what will be on tests and is not very helpful. I regret taking this class
Dr. Lessan's lectures are long, boring, and stray from the point. She makes so many spelling and grammatical errors that her powerpoints and tests are hard to understand. Her expectations for assignments are unclear and she grades them very harshly. This was supposed to be an easy A but it was easily my most dreaded class all semester. DO NOT TAKE
There are online discussion boards every 2 weeks. The book is extremely hard to understand. The tests are very hard and almost impossible to pass. Not sure about how her class is on campus, but online it is very hard.
Her lectures are not comprehensible, not because of her thick accent but because it appears she does not prepare her lectures and always goes off on a tangent on subject that don't have anything to do with the class. Instructions for class assignments are not clear. She shames students in front of the entire class if they ask any question.
Class is full of busy work that is more frustration than anything. Tests are extremly difficult. Ebook she wrote is full of gramatical errors and hard to understand and at times contradicts itself. Don't expect her to know what is going on in the class when you email her, run by TA. Course is very unorganized with due dates all mixed up.
She is very funny and interesting. She is always there to listen and/or help you with questions concerning the material or upcoming test. Visit her in office hours, she loves to know her students and help them out.
Her assignments are graded very harshly, along with the fact that she isn't clear at all on what is going to be on her tests while she rambles on about basic sociological principles. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
She is sometimes confusing during her lectures but also pretty funny.
I never attend class and still make a B
DO NOT TAKE. Test material comes out of nowhere. I attended every lecture, took notes, read the whole textbook and still managed to get a C on a test.. She goes on in class about things unrelated and makes it hard to discern what we actually need to know. Papers graded really hard too and almost no feedback given. She does give extra credit though.
Four tests and three essays. The lectures aren't clear so you will have to study the material by yourself, but everything that comes in the test is in the book. She's a very sweet lady who's always making jokes and willing to help the student out. There's a bunch of EC opportunities. Don't miss tho', she notices.
Dr. Lessan is the kindest professor i've ever had in my life. Although her lectures in class are hard to keep up with, I still love taking her class.
She goes on rants about things not relating to the course material. Every test I have had to just read the chapters when I do the study guide and I learn everything then. She doesn't seem like she prepares her lectures. I hardly learn anything in the class. I have never gotten a grade below a B in any class and I hope I can barely get a C.
Hard to understand but is passionate in what she is teaching.
Honestly this lady gives you so many chances to get extra credit just by showing up and doing the Bogus tests. With that said the whole book situation was confusing and the study guides were kind of difficult at first but they get better.
Class wasn't horrible. It was harder than it needed to be for an intro class. The study guides were long, the tests took getting use to, and the book and slides were useful. Study both. Go to class bc she does xtra credit. Bogus tests also give extra credit. You can get 9 points for each test max She's nice and will explain info A- but had to study
Given the option to eat glass or attend class I would choose the glass. She is incredibly opinionated and constantly goes off on rants that are not at all based in fact and I would always leave class fuming because she wouldn't let anyone disagree with her. The class isn't hard but the study guides are really long and the class is very boring.
She's an ok professor. The class is hard if you don't study or go to lectures. Lectures are mandatory. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities that go onto your exam grades. She is passionate when she teaches but she does ramble on about things and seems to go off topic a lot.. also has an accent.
She is very friendly and is available outside she of class. However, does have an accent that can make things difficult. You have a large paper/project worth 20%. There are long detailed study guides that are due for each test and are worth 5% each. Tests are 12.5%, including the final which was not cumulative. Attendance is worth 10%. Tons of EC!
Professor Lessan is a great professor. Her tests weren't to hard, but even though you aren't forced to read the textbook, reading the chapter can really help with the tests. She is really caring about her students and very personal. her accent is tough to understand sometimes though.
Dr. Lessan knows what she is talking about; however, her lectures are hard to follow and she goes off topic a lot. Her accent is hard to understand! She can also get political. This class wasn't hard if you do the work and study.
The way she lectures and the way she designed her class are both awful. I'm not sure if a single word she says in lecture will be beneficial on the exams. The exams have repetitive questions that share repetitive answers - it is hard to differentiate between each answer. If possible, avoid this professor.
Lessan's lectures are boring and she goes off on irrelevant tangents throughout her class. Getting anything out of attending class is useless, and the only reason to go is solely for the fact that she makes attendance 10% of the final grade. Her study guides are also extremely intensive for no reason. Avoid any of her classes at all costs.
Dr. Lessan is very smart in Sociology and is passionate, but she tends to go on rants during lectures and it can be hard to follow what she is trying to teach most of the time. Tests are pretty hard, so you have to read and go over the power-points. Attendance is mandatory and is a grade! Gives a lot of extra credit as well.
Do not take this class unless you have to. There are 4 study guides due(30 essay Qs) but theres also a term paper due at the end of the semester that literally doesn't make sense unless you contact the TA to clarify. If you miss more than three classes you lose points which is understandable but the lectures are her rambling and the tests are HARD.
its really not bad. As long as you show up to class, do the ec (quizzes on canvas and other opportunities), do the study guides (theyre a pain), and read through the PowerPoints on canvas the night before the exams youll get an A. There is one paper but she is not a tough grader.
Class attendance was mandatory and was 10% of the overall grade. I pretty much taught myself everything from the book because she was a little hard to understand sometimes but she is so nice and funny.
Sweet teacher, really wants to work with you. Difficult to understand at times - but she does her best to help students understand. Study guides are lengthy - but they are worth a lot and essentially help you prepare for the exams. makes you work for your grade
Lessan is a really sweet lady and is always wanting to help you. Her lectures are rambles and don't always make much sense, so the long study guides due before every test are basically how I learned all the material. Tests are not hard if you do the study guides and understand the basic concepts, but she words some questions weird. Tons of EC
I have learned more in this class than I ever have before, but you HAVE to show up because she takes attendance every day and it's 10% of your final grade. The tests are difficult, but there are opportunities for EC (Bogus Tests) and other assignments to boost your grade. Definitely not an easy class, but definitely worth your time
Dr. Lessan is actually such an intelligent, caring professor. She really knows what she's talking about during her lectures and makes an effort to get to know her students personally. There are 4 relatively easy exams and she gives up to 7 points of extra credit for each! Study guides are long but you can work on them during class.
Gloria Lessan is very lecture heavy. Whether or not the lectures have anything to do with the course is to be determined. She has long study guides for each exam that do not pertain to what is actually on the exam. She mandates that you buy the textbooks for the class but she wrote both the textbooks herself and they are very expensive and online.
Gloria Lessan is a very nice but it works for nothing because her TA is the person that grades mostly everything and he is a very difficult grader even if you do good on all the tests and you do bad on the semester project you still will get a bad grade in the class. She is a sweet lady but does not help you pass.
Too much for a level 1000 course. I completely understand the idea of working for your grade but 30-40 question mandatory study guides in which each question requires basically a whole paragraph?! No. And the study guides don't even reflect the exam much, it just basically extends what the reading says. She's nice, but its not worth the stress
I was scared to take this class because of the reviews, but I actually like it. The class itself is pretty boring (i have to take it as a requirement), but Prof Lessan is really funny. If you usually put in hard work in your classes, youll be fine. Her accent can be hard to understand at times but shes always down to help you. i like her as a prof
Dr. Lessan is among the few professors I even remember from my time at Florida State. I was always impressed by the care she took to learn the names of EVERY student in a huge lecture hall class on the first day. A year after I took her class, I passed her by on campus, and she greeted me by name. It says a lot about her character. Great professor!
Her class is structured poorly and will not work for all learning types. You can tell when she walks into class she has no idea what she'll be lecturing about and her notes often differ from the information in the textbook and leaves you to figure out what to follow. The mandatory study guides barely help on the test and take hours and hours to do
Dr. Lessan is my favorite professor I've had so far. She gives many extra credit opportunities and gives you 100 points for doing each study guide correctly. You can tell she knows a lot about what she's teaching and that WANTS her students to succeed. Her tests are a little difficult because they require you to think CRITICALLY about each subject.
Dr. Lessan is kind! She is an easy grader and her test are easy if you go to class and look over the powerpoint. There is no point in buying the books, they were difficult to read and hard to follow. Not a lot of effort required to pass.
Many of the reviews seem negative, but I think she's a great professor. Yeah, the assignments seem tedious, but it's pretty easy if you have the books and have notes from the lectures. She tries to have the class participate so it doesn't seem boring all the time. Her accent might be hard to understand from time to time, but I definitely recommend
Professor Lessan deeply cares about her students and is a nice person. IF you show her you care about doing well, she will help you. However, she is not technologically efficient or clear about due dates. It makes it difficult to know what you have to do and when sometimes. She also goes off on tangents a lot. Still, she means well.
Gloria Lessan was by far the worst professor I have had at FSU. She makes this class the most difficult, time consuming pointless class. The class is study guide and test heavy, while she randomly only grades 1/3 of the class. She/ her TA's were not helpful or kind when I reached out for assistance. Very disappointing do not even bother to enroll.
Took online and it was 3 tests, 3 discussion board posts and 3 study guides. Exams were really hard, but every exam had a pretest for extra credit and was curved. Never watched the lectures until before the exam and did fine on the exams.
Dr. Lessan was not a great professor, she didn't teach at all. Class was asynchronous, no lectures. The class was textbook based and a few slides. Class is all about study guides and exams, its time-consuming , and doesn't help with the exam. Hard to understand her, not clear on directions or grading criteria. Don't take if you want an easy class.
Took this class during the pandemic and hated it. She makes you do four long study guides that are about 4-9 pages each and they're almost never helpful during tests. The whole class consists of just these study guides and tests. The questions are hard to comprehend too; they usually contain errors. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
Grade based on 4 exams and 4 study guides. Beware of the exams because although attendance isn't mandatory, most of the questions come from the lectures. She gives a lot of extra credit, but they are a gamble. She is accessible, but she makes you think more when you reach out to her. Overall, a good professor.
I have taken two courses with Prof Lessan. The course structure is the same for both; very little oversight. There are 3 absolutely massive study guides you must turn in and they are daunting if you put them off, but you will be able to fill in at least part just from the lecture. They really prepare you for the exams. I really enjoy her classes.
She was incredibly nice and very funny! She does have a rather thick accent so she can be hard to understand at times but her content is very clear and she's a good lecturer. For the study guides, keep them open when you're in class! She answers almost every question almost in order, so much easier than doing the night before the tests.
This professor made no sense during her lectures and barely taught anything. She mainly just tried to be funny and not teach us anything, while forcing attendance which doesn't benefit in any way. Lots of study guides that she grades very hard for no reason. I was a senior when I took this with a science major and she made this class impossible.
She was a good professor, and the class was fairly simple, even if you don't do amazing on the exams if you do the work and try even the slightest amounts on the exam you'll be fine
Super friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. Though she has an accent, I had no problems understanding her. Lectures are mandatory but she rambles and goes off on tangents at times. Use lecture time to do the homework. Receptive to questions and will clarify well. Tests were multiple-choice, taken in class, and very easy.
