Really nice lady, but tends to repeat herself and the class is hard. Must put alot of effort into it to get a decent mark.
She was the best prof I think I have ever had and expect to ever have. She's really insightful and inspiring ; her class is hard but fair
Very hard class. A lot of reading and she doesn't explain anything very well...tends to repeat herself. A hard marker.
Gloria is a great prof. She is very insightful and intelligent. She is willing to help students and answer any questions. She is easy to talk to and very understanding. I've learned more about writing from her than any other English prof/teacher that I've had before. If you put in the effort, you can get a great mark in this class.
there was alot of homework, she marks pretty hard on essays
An amazing lady and a wonderful professor(best one I have ever had)! I had a great experience in her class. She is incredibly helpful outside of the classroom and very easy to talk to. Very insightful and interested in hearing the opinion of everyone. Take a class with Gloria and you will not be disappointed!
Lots of assignments worth little of the mark, expects too much out of an intro class, very tough marker, gender biased towards female students, repeatedly repeats herself, wastes class time with unnecessary stories, expects every one to be a scholar. Overall a bad experience
Dr Olchowy is a great prof. Yes, she might repeat herself from time to time, but she knows what she is talking about. She's a pretty fair marker and more than willing to help you out. I've had many hour-long conversations with her after class. I highly recommend this prof!
Good teacher. Can get a little bit off topic, but if you go to class she's an awesome teacher. She gives detailed outlines for every class as well. =)
extremely helpful if you ask her for help, marks essay fairly hard, gets EXTREMELY off topic wasting ALOT of time, lots of little assignments, lots of class discussions and expects you to participate, lots of class presentations, requires lots of books to purchase
she is pretty good overall. marks essays really hard, and expects you keep up with alot of homework assingments. but she explains thing really well, and she gives alot of feed back on essays and allows you to revise them for an average mark.
Gloria was an amazing prof. She is interesting to listen to, and while she does get off topic if you are uncertain of something she is more than happy to explain it. It is A LOT of work but she is extremely fair.
Rozeboom is pretty crazy.
-amount of work expected to keep up with is rediculas. - granted however, some of the discussions were extremly amazing and fun, while lots were boring and ZzZzz.- marks VERY hard, but she will bend the rules a bit to help a student in need, and does know her english stuff very well. - Take this class if u are prepaired for the workload.
Honestly run!! she is insane! dont do it think of the children! If you want to fail take this class.. No joke. but enjoy her performance!...
Overall, she is my least favorite proffessor. She does mark extreamly hard and will even subsitute word choice on an essay. I find her to be favoritist. She does not treat everyone equally as far as helpfullness. Some students have recieved extensive help, while others do not. Often class discussions do not adhere to the subject.
She rambles about her kids, and is assigns a ridiculous amount of homework for a drama course. the class discussions were not on topic and we discussed menstrual cycles and breast milk for 4 classes. i would not recommend this course for anyone, it was nothing what i expected and all we did was read plays.
Worst class I have ever been a part of. Mandatory attendance was ridiculous. It's university, not high school! Were given daily outlines that resulted in strenuous amounts of homework. Hardest marker I've had, marked our class on NOTES, Wtf? Her drama class was felt more like English class than my English class. Stay away, it's not worth it.
Very strict and heavy on homework sometimes, but fair with grading. I enjoyed the class.
Gloria is a wonderful prof if you are willing to work hard. Yes her homework expectations for an elective are a little ridiculious but if you put in the effort you will do well in her class. Lectures were off topic often but she is still interesting to listen to. Personally I really like her but I would probably not take another course with her.
We spend more time talking about her life than the literature. She diverts to her own personal topics in class. I immensely enjoy the literature being covered in English 105, however, she can not stay on topic. She is very passionate, but it makes the class uncomfortable. She tends to disrespect people and regard them as naive.
If you bring maturity and a sense of personal responsibility to her class, this course will be a GPA booster for you. If you have an open mind, you will learn a lot. She is ALWAYS available and happy to give extra help. However, if you sit on Facebook during her lectures, expect to have a bad experience (but seriously, are you surprised?)
She's not all bad. Hard on homework, but thats EXPECTED in university, so I can't really blame her. Very personable and though her lectures sometimes go off topic, it's still fun to listen to her. However, if you are still in the high school mindset, you are bound to fail her class.
Overall horrible teacher. Highly **** and highly biased not to mention the fact she never stayed on topic. If you do not write a topic that interest's her, you can just forget about getting a mark higher than a C. When she did her usual Male bashing I stepped in and was called an idiot by her. If you're a male stay away from her.
I loved Gloria's classes! She is very knowledgable in her field, and although marks based on attendance is annoying, it is not unheard of in university. Though she has a 'wacky' personality, & may not be for everyone, she is very approachable. If you simply do your assignments, and take her criticism into account, you will probably get decent marks
A lot of the negative comments about her have some truth to them, but overall I found the class one of my favorites. Grading criteria clearly laid out and she is very willing to help students improve their writing (in a very friendly manner, I might add). A very holistic teacher. You'll get more from her than just regurgitation of a text book.
Such a hard marker and an overall bad teacher. She picks favorites and makes it very clear. She is the worst professor I have had and she should not be allowed to teach. Do not take a class with her.
No one in our class enjoyed her. Difficult marker that stresses grammar mechanics and format. Often diverging from course content and spending too much time on unimportant topics. Hated this class. Argued with her opinions. She picks favourites so be one or do poorly.
I do not recommend Dr. Olchowy. All of her miniscule assignments consumed more of my time than all of my other classes combined. Attendance is mandatory, and class is boring as all she does is talk about herself. She requires you to take notes on readings that you do outside of class and then hand them in for marks, which is a little unreasonable.
I thought I would enjoy this class, but after a few months I totally changed my mind. She goes offtopic every class, gets behind on material, and asks for almost useless assignments. Also, she reads previous students writing and it makes ALL of her students feel like their writing is inferior. Take 102/103 instead.
gloria's teaching methods make failing hard. she loves what she teaches and is very passionate, sure sometimes she goes off subject but what she has to say is always interesting. i love this class.
Gloria is one of those professors you have to get used to. She strays really far off topic, but I found that some of her personal accounts of plays she had seen/directed/acted in helped me to remember things. She's got an activist streak, so be prepared to hear her rant. This is a text based class, so there is a lot of reading and homework.
Dr.Olchowy is one of those profs who is really great but you have to be prepared to do a lot of work. You get more work in this class then the rest combined. She strays off topic a lot. But, if there is any teacher to teach you the proper foundation of writing its her. If you take this class you will be set, writing wise, for future classes.
Dr. Olchowy was the best teacher I ever had. She knew what she was doing, and made sure her students were successful. She is very engaging when she lectures, and is passionate about what she does. I highly recommend her class!
Dr. Olchowy is amazing! She is by far the best professor at Grant MacEwan. She knows what she is doing and she is extremely helpful. I really do strongly recommend her class. Warning: There is a lot of work involved. Dr. Olchowy loves work and expects you to work. If you do the work you will be rewarded. Don't get behind, especially in her class.
Great prof! Just be open to her style of teaching and do what she asked you to do and you will be fine. Some tasks might seem pointless, but most do actually help you become a better writer! She's a fair marker and you know what she expects before you start writing. The best thing about her is that you can revise your essay and its 50/50 graded!
This prof is by far the worst I have had yet. With twice the workload of any other English class and twice as hard marking. Take someone else if you work or have a full course load.
If you don't have much interest in English and are just there to meet requirements (like many in my class), go elsewhere. However, this is class is great for someone really interested/talented in English and analyzing and such. Olchowy has helped me improve my writing skills a great deal, and uses interesting literature in class.
Gloria is a great prof! If you're not interested in English as a major, take another class or choose another prof because she has so much passion for what she's teaching, you won't do well unless your participate in class. Her workload is larger than most classes but she is always there to help and you get to revise your essays!
A LOT of homework but it helped me out immensely so it was really worth it!
I had her last year and there is a lot to do in class. But she gives you plenty of chances to raise your mark and she's always available if you need help. I would recommend for sure.
She is a very passionate and brilliant person. Although she assigns a lot of homework, I found that it helped me a lot. She can be a little tough but she truly wants to see her students succeed. I'm taking another English class this semester and I miss her a lot. I HIGHLY recommend her, GREAT PROF.
We had 10 quizzes, a novel study and a film study this week. A whole lot of work completed entirely outside of class, but fairly easy grades. She rants about her past constantly in class and leaves the actual work for hw which is really, really annoying.
She is a royal witch
Attendance is mandatory and she is a hard marker. Gives you wayy too much hw and if you have high course load her class is not recommended.
A wonderful prof. She is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. If you dislike when the prof goes off topic, discusses their personal life, or if you are anti-feminism, then don't take this class. Otherwise, it is fantastic. This is the first year I have actually LIKED English. The work load is moderate, but not ridiculous.
I'm in my 3rd year and Gloria has been my fave prof. If you're willing to put in the effort and do all of your work, you will walk away with a good mark. She's passionate, interesting, and actually cares about her students. She has inspired me so much! Highly recommend her!! Lots of work but her class completely changed my University experience.
Loved her! She is passionate, helpful and just a wonderful person. Put some effort in your written assignments and you will do awesome.
She's a wonderful lady, it's easy to tell she really cares about her students and the subject. Her class is definitely not easy though, she's a tough marker and you will need to bring your books every day and take detailed notes as she marks you on your in class notes..
An amazing prof. The course load is moderate/high. Truly my favourite prof in uni, I recommend you try to get her for both semesters of English!
She has ridiculous standards for a first year English course. She is unreasonable when it comes to formatting, even when her rules differ from that of the Macewan library. By far the worst class I have experienced in my three years of university. Be prepared for one hell of a workload.
By far the best English teacher I have ever had. Work load is extremely high and she has high expectations. Be prepared to work hard. However she outlines exactly what she is looking for and is extremely helpful when you ask. She is very caring about her students and takes an interest in her students academics and well being. Classes are enjoyable.
One of the hardest marker ever. she has too much expectations for a junior level English course. Also has a heavy workload.
Has unbelievably high expectations for a junior level class. The workload provided would be hard to complete in two semesters let alone one. Very hard marker and almost always loses focus in class.
I loved Gloria's method in this class. The workload may be heavy, but it is worth it. You leave the class with a deeper understanding of the materials and a new way of seeing things that exist around you. Not only did she spark a new love for literature, but a new confidence in myself as a writer and a reader. I could not recommend her enough.
If only her exams were based on her life i would have an A+ for sure. she goes terribly off topic and repeats stories about her farm life over and over again. Her 132 and 133 classes are really difficult and her final exam is a living nightmare. I honestly learned more about her biography than British literature.
I thought she was wonderful. A heavy workload but she is helpful if you ask her questions. Doesn't treat you like she is above you like some teachers, treats you like a friend. Class was always fun with discussion, she was always enthusiastic.
Shes a crazy hard marker with unrealistic expectations for our first year introductory course. And no, this isn't written in MLA format because nobody cares.
One of the most engaging Prof's I've ever had. An absolutely insane work load but she is always willing to help and you're never confused about your expectations. Makes lectures interesting and is the most passionate Prof with respect to her subject matter. Demonstrate the same passion and she'll break her back to help you succeed. +AAA
She is by far the best prof I've had so far in university. She really cares about her students and is extremely helpful if you need it. However, her classes are a ton of work and a lot of your energy is spent on papers, but if you work hard and attend class then it will pay off.
She is so passionate about her students and it really makes all the difference with her lectures. Gives clear expectations for papers and assignments. Also gives opportunities to revise your work.
Best prof I have had, hands down. She is super helpful and very passionate. I was really struggling to begin with and she not only helped me improve my writing but was always reassuring me there was no need to stress, we would work it out together. I am very thankful for teachers like this. She makes you work hard but it pays off.
Dr. Olchowy is very passionate about literature, which is clear in her lectures. She is a hard marker, but she offers feedback and revision assignments. She also literally writes out EXACTLY what she expects from each paper. Definitely participate in class because she loves to hear your thoughts on the works she covers. Final is hard- study wisely
Loved having her! Expectations for exams were clear. Lots of constructive feedback on essays. Made us edit our final essay twice so we got the experience. If you ask her for help she's more than willing to provide it. Go to class. She's hilarious and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend her!
Loved it.
SHE IS PHENOMENAL! Very motivated, inspirational, organized, gives amazing feedback, passionate, and everything good! Her work load may seem like a lot, however it turned my papers from a 70% average grade to literally in the 90% zone. she is a professor i NEED to have in every class. I RECOMMEND HER TO EVERYONE !
There's not enough I can say! If you like English, take some classes with her, it might change you for the better
Dr. Gloria is really passionate about what she does. Her assignments are fair games and are really easy. She is always happy to help you through your essays, assignments, or to prepare for exam. The only complain I have is how hard her final exam is. She's not that hard of a marker. she gives you plenty of chances through essay revisions
Gloria was an awesome prof. Although her semester is very work heavy, she is 100% worth it. She was always willing to give feedback on any papers, and her assignments and quizzes were basically easy bonus points. Final was rather long, and definitely intimidating, but you had plenty of time to prepare for it. One of the best profs i've ever had.
Awesome instructor. Very enthusiastic about all of her work and wants you to succeed in the course. Her instructions are very clear and is very dedicated to her teaching. Always available after class and very approachable and friendly. She made class fun and interesting and will always give you great feedback and corrections. Would recommend!
Great prof, missed 4 weeks of school due to an injury, Gloria was super helpful in allowing me to make up for everything while taking into account my other classes.
You need to work hard in her class but she is 100% clear in what she expects and you will actually learn. She genuinely cares about her students and is still one of the best profs I've had. She gave us interesting material to read, adequate time to get things done, and detailed feedback. There is a lot of peer work but it was so beneficial.
I truly learned so much from her! She was so kind to me and allowed me to reach my full potential! encouraged me each step of the way and provides so much feedback! Things seemed very hard but here i am at the end of my first semester and it was all worth it and it will benefit in other future classes too
also i never really used the canadians readers refrence textbook you can proabbly just share a textbook with a friend she takes attendance every dya and you are penealized she may seem strict but she wants you to succeed and she is very kind and helpful
While enthusiastic about her class, this prof was a VERY difficult marker and her lectures were hard to follow. If you struggle with English I would not recommend her.
By far the best teacher I have ever had. Super passionate about what she does, and it translates into her teaching. I was terrified for my first university english class, but Dr. Olchowy made the subject significantly less intimidating and is there to help you every step of the way. Lectures are super interesting.
She's very passionate about what she teaches. A strong feminist.
Yes her class seems tough and to some extent it is. BUT, if you are truly at MacEwan to learn something more than just the textual facts, she is the one to study from. She shows you what passion is and how teaching should be. SHE IS ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU, HARDER THE TESTS, MORE SHE HELPS YOU. She just REFINES YOU AS A STUDENT BY BEING IN same boat
One of the best. If you want easy run the other way. But if you want to learn more English in one semester than your whole degree, and understand it, and get feedback, and make a friend (seriously she'll adopt you), then Gloria is your woman! HARD marker. Makes you work for it, but because she honestly cares. 100% about the work nothing personal.
Dr. Olchowy was honestly the best English prof I've ever had. She is super helpful with all everything she assigns, and she tells you exactly what she wants in all assignments. Though she assigned A LOT of work, I feel that taking ENGL 102 with her was worth it. She is very passionate about everything she teaches. I definitely recommend her!
Dr. Olchowy makes English interesting. Lots of homework, and not the easiest marker. One thing that was a bit frustrating is how she would ask the class a question, and when someone started to answer, she would talk over them. Sharing was difficult in her class, as she hardly lets anyone get in a word edgewise. Overall, a good class.
super awesome prof, lots of energy, makes it almost impossible for you to fail her class, she does give hw but is very approachable and easy to get help from. she can seem a little low key crazy at times tho.
Gloria is really passionate about drama. Her lectures are boring at times, but her enthusiasm keeps you awake because she's intense. We were required to see two plays out of school, watch an online play out of school, and read Hamlet on our own time. It's a lot of extra work aside from class, & she grades your work meticulously. Nice lady though!
Gloria is a very nice and kind person, however she expects a lot out of her students. She claims she understands that we have other classes but I dont think she does as it seemed there was a paper due every week. Incredibly frustrating having to go to her office at inconvenient times because she didnt finish grading my assignments in time.
Gloria really cares about everyone in her class and really wants everyone to do good. she does not have favorites, i really enjoyed being in her class, she puts effort into all her lectures and takes time to teach you on what you did right and what you did wrong. i recommend her for drama or English.
If you want an engl class that you can slack off in and put in minimal effort than this is not the class for you. That being said I have never had a better instructor in all my years of schooling. She's extremely helpful when writing papers and genuinely wants her students to learn proper writing skills. 110% recommend. I'd love to have her again.
I am writing this review in my third year of university even though i took a course with Gloria in my first year. Her teachings really set me up for success in university, and i still look to her feedback once and while to inform essays i am writing even in my third year. Her passion and knowledge truly makes the class!
Great Prof! would recommend.
Generally a nice teacher. I found that she rambled on too much about Christianity and sex too much, mostly unrelated to what we need to do for the course. she gave a lot of small insignificant assignments to do. When she assigned papers she was very clear of her expectations, but still a VERY hard marker on papers and is very detail oriented...
IDr. O is an AMAZING English professor, always available for extra help, and extremely clear in her expectations for assignments. Those expectations are high in comparison to many 100-level professors, and she makes you work for it, but you will be rewarded if you put in the work. I learned so much in her class, highly recommend her for 102!
If it wasn't for Dr. Olchowy, I wouldn't have learned how to write a paper in my first year. Now that I'm finishing up my degree, I can honestly say taking her class set me up for success. There's a lot of homework but she gives great feedback and cares about your well being. She's very passionate which makes her lectures worth attending.
She insists on talking about her own life to the point she cuts herself off when talking about course content so she can give her own anecdote about everything (usually very unrelated and sometimes uses the same story 3-4 times...) Overall I would not recommend this class unless your interested an old ladies boring life.
Gloria is a very friendly and passionate professor, however, she expects too much. She claims she understands we have other classes, but I have never been given so many reading/essay assignments in my life. She expects you to pay for and attend plays on your own time and then write essays about them. Love her as a person, not so much as a prof.
She had many assignments due worth little of your mark. There were many steps you needed to do to complete each big assignment and you are penalized if you miss a step. Group projects were given and due within just a few days and it would be hard to coordinate meeting times. She is a super tough marker. Expected a lot of students outside of class.
Don't waste your time. Talks about herself, the holocaust, how women are so incredibly oppressed, more than anything else. Not a great writer, doesn't seek to improve your writing, just flex her "skill." Corrections are always redundant: word choice, correcting style. Annoying. She takes it personal if you don't take her suggestions. Sad!
Really wants you to learn and succeed
2 novels, 1 long play, 1 short play, 1 two hour documentary (watch individually), poems, short stories, group project. Makes participation and attendance mandatory. 2 essays (worth 35% and 20%) due a month and 1/2 a month before finals. Assignments due almost every class. If you want to sit back and relax, don't take her class. Nice but very picky.
Only the last 1/3 of the semester was crazy, but, though she was strict with some expectations, she broke everything into steps to make it manageable. The other 2/3 of classes were spent listening to her as she talked about the most interesting things, and it was nice not having homework. She really wants her students to do well and loves to help.
Nicest lady ever. She seriously cares and wants you to succeed. Would highly recommend. Shes kinda scary at the start. She gives really good feedback. And my favorite part. She let us revise 2 of our papers, one being the research paper, and combined the marks! Which is a really nice grade boost especially if your like me and not good at English
She is nice and... Yeah that's pretty much it. Ridiculous amount of readings/essays. This class was the most unnecessarily difficult class I've ever taken in my undergrad. I deeply regret not taking these reviews seriously and actually tried giving her a chance. Being completely honest, BUSN 450 was easy compared to her class.
This was basically an English course and was by FAR the BEST English class I have ever taken at MacEwan. I am a good writer and her class helped me to become a better one: great writing advice and lots of interesting theatre stories and insights. I loved how the reading list was a mixture of classics and more obscure. I loved it.
Expect lots of readings and papers. She always gave good feedback on papers, and allows for revisions. Notes are difficult to get as she rambles about feminism, women's oppression, the holocaust and herself most of the class. Her assignment expectations are high, she's very picky. Overall she wants you to succeed but expects a lot for a 100 course.
Gloria is such a great prof. There was a lot of homework in this class, but it was totally worth it because this class was an easy A. Gloria wants her students to succeed in her class and beyond. She is dedicated to making sure her students learn very important writing skills to take beyond just theatre. I learned a lot from her!
Gloria is a nice person and is very passionate about her lectures. However, there is WAY too much homework for a 100-level class, and the expectations are incredibly high. Get ready to spend 2 hours a day minimum working on graded assignments due each day. If you don't go to class, you won't pass. I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Dr. O is VERY passionate about the course content, which made lectures fun and engaging. She did talk about herself (nuns, farms, childhood sexism) a lot which wasted time. The homework was constant and only for participation marks. You can do revisions on all your papers which really improves writing & grades, but she can be picky.
I got lost in her words...in a good way. She's very smart and very passionate about her profession. She made me rewrite an essay 4 times because I didn't do it right each time instead of giving me a 0, that should say a lot about her. She cares, although there is a lot of readings and homework for a first year course.
Dr. Olchowy is the most wonderful professor I've ever had. She is so knowledgeable and passionate, but most of all, she wants you to succeed. She will encourage and inspire you, but also make sure your work is top tier. I took Dr. Olchowy's THAR 105 for my fine arts credit, but she ended up setting me up for success for the rest of my BA in English
Dr. Olchowy was a great prof. As a first year student, she made the transition very stress-free by trying not to assign much homework. This meant that attendance was highly important but that was never an issue for me as I enjoyed her class very much. She takes time to get to know her students and gives very personalized feedback to assignments.
