This class was hard, but Prof Martin did a great job nonetheless. Intro Bio is used to weed out weak prospective students from the major, and this class definitely accomplishes that. The tests are brutal, and for non bio majors this might be a killer. To succeed in this class, just take the time to read the book, attend class and listen.
Exams are quite difficult. Tends to spend a lot of time re-reviewing where he last left off, and runs out of time to adequately cover new material before an exam (and then goes ahead and includes it anyway, despite 1 day to prep). Offered option to retake incorrect questions for half credit, so it seems he is concerned about class performance.
He just goes through his slides. The exams are really hard and he asks about things we did not study in class.
He just goes through his slides during the lecture. His exams are difficult and he asks about things you did not study in class.
Class average on first test was a 40, yet he blamed study habits. He is not helpful whatsoever. Takes too long going over things he already said. Doesn't get to new material but includes it on the test anyways. I would advise to avoid this professor
Really smart biologist, but probably not suited to teach biology. The information that comes out of this man is quite amazing, yet none of it would be on an exam. First exam average was a 40, yet he doesn't take blame for any of it. This would be a great person to get to know in a lab, but as a professor he seems to fail.
Hard exams and low scores which contain no information from the notes; yet the teacher blames the student's study habits. Emphasizes notes with confusing intellectual sayings. Homework is not possible to complete using your notes. iClicker questions are 100x easier than exam questions. He knows his stuff, but forgets that not everyone has their pHD
Goes through slides too quickly for scribing or typing. Uses complex vocabulary which confuses students. Exams do not reflect the material on the notes. Low test scores were blamed on the students effort on studying rather than teaching style. He knows the material but needs to understand that in intro biology not everyone is a bio genius.
Would not recommend. Nice professor, but needs to be understood by the students. Hard exams contain spontaneous material. Not an easy class even the best end up with low marks.
I liked biology before this class now I dislike it. Try to avoid the class if you want a good learning experience.
Only a terrible professor can make you dislike a subject you've loved for years. Intellect and teaching ability are completely separate, the latter of which glover has none. material is taken from textbooks not assigned for the class, tests are worded purposfully difficult. I dont feel he cares at all about us learning biology or passing.
Nice person to talk to. Horrible professor to get taught by. Compared to the previous professor it is a total fail. He does not attempt to make his material understandable and when he does it vanishes from the exams.
This man obviously knows his material when it comes to Biology, however he cannot teach it at all. Lecture is filled with confusing words, iclicker questions are not consistent with tests and homework. The homework is not possible to accomplish without outside sources, even then it's too difficult. Class average was a 40 out of 300 students.
Tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Class average of 40% out of 300 students...
Consistently tests on things that you have never seen before. It doesn't matter how much time you spend preparing for exams, it is hit or miss. This is the worst class and a complete waste of time and money. I am flabergasted at the fact that this man has a job teaching. He is a nice man, but not meant to teach this class.
Very unclear and plays guessing games. You are better off just reading the book and teaching yourself. And guess what the exams are extreme application of material on the notes, but he does not give examples of any test questions. So, you have the knowledge, but he does not show you how to apply it. Avoid!
do not take him if at al possible, destroying everyones semester and GPA. Effort doesn't show in your grade. Frustration does not begin to describe what his class is going through currently.
He is not a good professor. The exams are hard and have nothing to do with what he lectures about. He doesn't care about student success and gets all his exam questions online.
Very hard course for even an A student like me. The professor needs to give a lot of extra credit for most people to pass.
Steals all home questions from AP Biology online websites, which makes studying for his tests all about memorizing and answers, rather than learning. His poor teaching caused this GEN BIO course to be scaled by 40 points. He doesn't even say what chapters will be on the test, and takes 2 weeks to return tests. The WORST professor I've ever had.
Poor Choice. Boo as a professor, but good guy. This semester has been a total failure since day 1 and everyone knows it. I passed the previous bio course with B.W. and received an A, but here I am failing: at best a D. Hard tests and very complex wording which requires application of general material to weird confusing questions. Try to avoid!
He's nice but his teaching style is bad. He tries to fit a lot of very specific info into a class that's meant to be very broad. It's very difficult to keep up. He has to scale EXTREMELY generously so a D ends up being an A. Would not recommend.
This guy is just plain horrible. What he teaches...no what he reads on his slides have no correlation on the test that he gives, mind you that his tests are copied and pasted from online AP Bio questions
This class isnt hard and I have done very well. But the professor isnt clear on what he wants you to know for the exam. He tells you not to read the text book - yet he uses a test bank that comes directly from the Campbell's text book. If you dont read your book - you WILL NOT pass. Huge grade inflation.
Definitely tough class, but if you put the work in, you can get an A. His exams are really hard (you have to apply the material; questions aren't right out of the class notes), but exams are HEAVILY scaled. You HAVE to read the book in order to do well (to get background info on material). He gives extra credit and lab will boost your grade.
Worst professor I have ever had. Uses the slides from the book but its not what he uses when making the tests. Tests were off topic. He wasn't helpful at all. I read the chapters outlined and studied xtremely hard for this class and only managed to get a B+. He had a standard deviation set in place for each test the was 28 pts. His class was awful.
He is the worst teacher I have never had. His class was boring and useless. He treated us as all of us with PHD. His exams were very hard and tested you something which was not from the book. He is not responsible for his students. Don’t take this class with him. He makes you even more confuse about the materials.
Everything people have been saying about this guy is true. Avoid if you can and hope for the best if you are stuck with him.
What everyone here is saying is true: Do not take a class with him. He is very unorganized, unclear, he goes too fast, the material is not level appropriate, and this class is for science majors. He is unapproachable and never answers emails. The worst class I've taken at this school!!
Do not take him Please
Keep saying you don't have to worry about the details but his exams are all about those details. His lecture is not enough for his test. He also uses different textbook.
This guy can't teach to save his life. Not to say he isn't knowledgable in the materials he's just not an educator. The exams are downright impossible to study for, with no clear indication of what he wants. Don't try to tough it out drop the class. Class avg in the 20's for his exams. I wanted to take Biochem II but now I want no part of it.
I took Bio 101 with him, the Basis of Life. I was supposed to learn the basic, "THE BASIS". And he taught stuff that higher level biochem student could understand.
I would not recommend him unless you plan on being a biologist. I took this class to fill a gen-ed and could not regret it more. "basics" of bio my butt, everything is complex, for online quizzes GOOGLE THE QUESTIONS he takes them off a website and they're impossible to do on your own. iclicker for extra credit attendance, never answers emails.
Prf. Martin was an excellent lecturer, and often made himself available to discuss the material outside of lecture/office hours. Exams demanded creativity/problem solving skills that are otherwise unseen in most biology courses, so superficial memorization probably won't work out. Being encouraged to reflect was challenging, but worth it.
He gave good lectures. Everything else is bad. He handed back lab reports over a month after they were handed in, and the feedback would usully be a "?" with 30-40 points randomly taking off... I've received straight AB's on lab reports in all of my other physics, chemistry, and biology labs thus far (quite a lot). He often skips office hours...
Flat out- this teacher was the worst I've had, including middle highschool and college. he was unhelpful, didnt respond to emails, got all of his homework questions and test questions online, gave long boring lectures that had no correlation to any of the homework or exams - DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!! gave him 1's cause it wouldnt let me put 0
RUN! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I'm sure he's a great guy, but he is a horrible professor unfortunately. He does not answer emails, nor does he give clarifying answers to questions. There were times he seemed just as confused as we were, during the semester. Maybe if he made his class/lectures a little more exciting it may help??
Horrible Professor. I took this class to fill a gen ed requirement and got a higher level biology course instead. All he does is read from his slides and the lectures are boring and confusing. Had biology major friends help me with homework and even they didn't understand homework. AVOID HIM!!!
Of all the lab instructors I had for my 3 years in college, he is by far the worst. Not only is he a tough grader, he is so bad at explaining information(in a boring way too, how is that possible?). You can tell that he does not want to be there for his students. Late for office hours and no response for emails. Ignore him if possible
Not too bad at presenting the material, but he's a very tough grader... like very though. Know the material very well and you will get along with him for sure!
One of the worst professors I've have. Boring lectures - he just read off slides, never answered emails, and took off point on tests for no reason.
I have to disagree with any negative commentary, although you all had me worried. Doc M is a wonderful lecturer, breaks things down, points out what matters and why... much better than many of the other biochem lecturers I've had. And my grades with him were no different than with the others. Give him a chance. He doesn't made you feel dumb either
his tests were very long open response. very detailed and questions were not specific enough nor did anyone have enough time to finish. My average was like 50 on each exams. doesn't scale. lots of online homework from sapling that u have to pay for. not a good lecturer. no enthusiasm for the class.
Please wait for another professor. Exams are long essays. His expectations are unreasonable. This is undergraduate not graduate. Do not try and toughen it out. Homework contains 39 questions per chapter and it's not related to the exam. Save yourself the headache and thank me later. Just drop or don't his class. I regret this class sincerely.
Amazing professor 10/10. His tests are hard but study and youll get through. One of my best professors Ive had and seems to know what hes talkinh about. A lot of these comments are bashing him but hes a genuinely good teacher.
He doesn't even answer questions you may have about the class, does not provide solutions for any class problem we may be having. He looks lost and dismissive to his students. Regretting my decision of enrolling in this class.
Concern about how you doing? He would not answer your email if you just taking lecture course only Could not read his handwriting
Professor Martin is a friendly dude, and definitely accessible outside of class. His morning lectures however seem to drag on at a snail's pace, and it kinda feels like none of us want to be there. I don't understand science at all, and probably couldn't recall anything I learned, and barely paid attention, but I passed with a B+.
He is by far the worst professor, let alone teacher, I have ever had to endure. He gives an accessible amount of homework, he is impossible to contact, and when approached for help face-to-face in regards to class work as well as my poor health, he was condescending, rude, and refused to help me seek a solution to the problem.
Professor Martin is a nice guy. His lectures are interesting, and he cares about his students, but he is a hard grader. There aren't many tests, and the ones he gives are difficult. You gotta study. Only study lecture material. You don't have to read the textbook, only skim it. There is a lot of homework, but it isn't hard. Overall, nice guy.
Every day I walk through this planet, trying to understand what life was like before Prof Martin steeped my mind in perpetual wonder and amazement for the forces of life all around me.
I pass/failed the class. Doesn't grab your attention at all while lecturing. Besides participation & in-class quizzes, the rest of the grade it's three 2 page essays about the topics discussed in class which he takes a while to grade, and the final which is multiple choice.
Very kind, but never answers emails. You don't really need to textbook, you can just google the questions and find them online. You have to use iclicker so you should by the textbook early, it was back ordered for weeks.
Before this class, my lowest grade was an A-. This class requires you to submit 3 papers and select from 4 different due dates. I had a submission error and realized it after the due dates but showed him proof I did my paper early. He still gave me a 0 on the paper. I don't recommend this class because he clearly doesn't care about his students.
This professor is the most disrespectful professor I've ever had. If you ever try to reach him outside of class GOOD LUCK because he doesn't show up to his office hours, his emails are vague, and if you do get to meet him he is clearly trying to leave asap. He just doesn't care about his students and could care less if you comprehend the material.
Martin is wonderful. He's clear, calm and gives great applicable explanations. I think his intelligence can be intimidating but he's extremely helpful and answers any questions really thoroughly. I took Bio 101 and I felt like for such an abstract concept he took his time to make sure we have the info. He held an extra review session before final.
He's a phenomenal educator. I believe he grades fair and makes adjustments to on the fly for students. I took his class during quarantine and he made a very stressful time less panicky and shifted lectures online quickly. I'd take his class for any subject if I could. He doesn't assign a ton of work either.
Professor Martins class was not hard, however his three hour long lectures were painfully hard to get through. He talks the whole time and does a poor job of gaining his students attention or making his class interesting. In addition, he was often unorganized, late to class, and went over scheduled class time.
HE DOESNTCARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS AND THIS GRADING IS WERID. Again he doesnt care about his student. I know we are in hard time with COVID but he is not being considered with his students. His class is bring more stress to my life and cant withdraw because I dont have the money. HE DOESNT CARE!!! Dont take this class try taking another one.
He didn't give any extra time on papers which wouldn't be a problem if he gave us a heads up about it. Didn't even show up to his own extra credit class on Blackboard, and ignored two of my emails, and sends out a mass email to students about something else instead. Overall, a horrible professor, completely turned me off from my own major.
This dude has got to be the laziest professor out there. He wants you to teach yourself literally everything then gives you chapter quiz's that count for a huge part of grading. He has not done one helpful lecture out of the entire year and we have already done 3 chapters. Should be fired.
IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE THIS CLASS OR ANY OTHER CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE, PLEASE TAKE IT. I have no doubt that Prof Martin is smart, but he full of himself and lack of problem solving skills. He doesnt care about the students. His exams are HARD. I hope I never have to take a class with him again. NEVER AGAIN.
uses clicker for attendance which is graded so you need to show up, every other week unit material is due along with papers which isn't a lot but you cannot fall behind, also book isn't required but buying online access from achieve/macmillan is required which is $50-100 I think
Lectures are pointless as he repeats exactly what is in the book. Exams are tough as half are multiple choice (easy) but the other half are written questions worth 25 pts and if you get one wrong you fail the test (he also is a hard grader on those questions so good luck). >60% of your grade is based on how you do on exams
Just. Don't. you will need therapy following this course.
Speaks very low and does not engage with the class, only reads off slides for every class. TOUGH on deadlines/strict deadline policy. Assigns 3 mandatory papers, have to purchase subscription to do the homework and reading. You basically teach yourself. Actual class material is not difficult if you have taken bio before.
None of the previous review you may have come across are a lie, unless they are praising this professor. If you cannot avoid this class I sincerely feel for you and wish you ALL THE GOOD LUCK! This is not a teacher who will keep you interested in the class/course. Keep in mind you will be teaching yourself and you're on your own.
50 points for multiple-choice questions and 50 points for open responses (very hard). A significant amount of homework that won't be relevant to the test. There isn't a study guide for the test. only the questions provided following the chapter in the textbook, which won't also apply to the exam
He gives you 4 admission dates for short papers, 3-5 pgs long and you get to choose when to submit depending on the 4 dates he gives you. have to buy achieve, was about $80 for semester, you use it a lot since thats where our hw is. one midterm and final, both online
This professor is one of the most disconnected professors I have ever met. I have sent so many emails asking for help with the midterm and asking questions that I needed answered to complete my work. My grade is going to be so bad and I partly blame this professor because they are supposed to help with some things, and he simply did not care.
Learn to read your professor. He's so knowledgeable and friendly. Since he distills the info, I didn't touch the textbook once. If you can go through each lecture slide and understand what they're about, specifically what he said about them in lecture, then you're golden for his exams. 30% final, 45% 3 exams. All OR's in the spring.
Possibly the worst lecturer I've ever had. He's boring, disconnected, unhelpful, and a poor communicator overall. No direction or due dates for textbook reading or homework, so you're basically teaching yourself, though not at your own pace. Makes you pay for a $100 online service not only to do homework, but also to mark yourself present in class.
This professor is not helpful at all, I been having problems accessing the homework and other assignments to complete. He gave little solution to resolve this problem and currently have a bad grade because of it. I find myself be very disengaged while sitting in the class. I feel as though I am not learning anything from this class.
Worst professor ever, makes annoying faces when you ask questions - just rambles in class and when students are confused he says "If you read the txt book you wouldn't be confused" his exams are all essay formats no multiple choice. He loves to say " you should've known this by now if not go learn it " Avoid him at all cost No extra credit.
Very personable guy, especially when you go to office hours. Grading is a bit unclear, but he is a very fair teacher. As long as you are above the average on the tests, you will get at least a B. Massive scales at the end of the course. Had him for both lab and lecture, extremely nice and helpful as long as you prepare.
He might be the worst prof in the bio department. Powerpoints make no sense and do not help. Notes on the board are straight up illegible. Exams are vague in comparison to his lectures. A yapper that makes you feel like you've learned nothing.
he's a good dude, just not meant to be teaching in a classroom. teaches undergrad courses at a PhD difficulty. if you can take another professor for the same course, do it.
Taught with Hagar. His slides I thought were better than Hagar's but that not saying much. Glover also spoke in a way that made more sense to me. Course structure was very bad. From the slides (100-200) to HWs not in sync with lecture to the sheer volume of material and lack of clear main takeaways. Lack of study direction was frustrating.
Good person and a smart guy. Unfortunately that is where all the praise ends. The presentation of the class is poor. Endless amount of slides (black text on white background too) and concepts taught at a very high level for a baby's first Bio course. Not a very good lecturer, speaks super slow- almost like he is reading a bedtime story. 4/10. Bad.
The class is set up horribly. Never seen another STEM class like this. Exams were all ORQ based on class slides, either hit or miss. He is a nice guy but the format of the course should change. Class slides are also vague and like hundreds on each topic. He also is not the best at replying to emails. Take the class elsewhere or with other Prof
Through my 4 years in UMass, I can tell you that without a shadow of doubt he was the worst professor I have ever had. He is a very lazy man that will not post anything until last minute, and he grades the course like he is handing out Nobel Prize awards.Aviod at all cost even if that means taking the class a semster later.
I had Dr. Martin for intro to nutrition, and I have nothing bad to say. He was very understanding and reasonable, and is a genuinely funny guy. You could tell how smart he is by his lectures, but not in a way that was pretentious as he understood this was an intro course and was able to explain everything at an understandable level
His first time teaching this class, so not the most organized and lectures were quite boring. The textbook is online and on the same platform as the homework. There were either 2 homeworks per week or 11, but they weren't too hard, some were time-consuming. The final is worth 30% of your grade, and there were 2 quizzes, but all were online.
