Can't get past the accent...kind of annoying...might be better if my class was
great math prof., not too boring and explains well, easy grader
goes to fast and has an accent
easy grader and will points to help your grade. always here to help if needed.
Nice teacher, class and test is very hard. English speakin is kinda har to underatand. BUt a good professor and will give u higher grade than u earned.
Friendly guy, hard & fast class but as long as you pay attention and attend he'll help your grade
The accent definitely is a killer, but a nice guy. If he sees you work, he'll give you the grade you want; he doesn't fail anyone.
Very easy, and you don't have to go to class.
terrible class, terrible accent, and terrible grader. He is not a good teacher, well maybe to himself he is.
u can't really understand him. tests are hard. easy hw. verrrryy hard course.
Accent is definitely killer...and his tests are hard..but didnt fail anybody..has a weird grading system which helped us!! if you have test avg. of 75 in his class, he will give you an A!!! take him!! Nice guy, easy to approach.
unless your rastafarian, i dont think you can understand anything he says... his tests are hard as hell... but has a good attitude so hes not too bad, we'll see what grade i get in the class!!
Nice guy, but unsure of his grading. Said he would add extra points from doing homework, but it didn't seem to appear... Gets a bit perturbed if you don't understand material and claims you don't do the assignments
i cant understand him and he thinks he funny, but isnt. tests are hard, work is hard, but i get an A. how am i learning???
Class gets harder as you go along, and the fact that you cant understand what he is saying doesnt help. Got all B's in the class and failed the final got a C for the class. If u dont wanna do any work and dont mind a C take him.
worst teacher ever...expects you to know everything and doesnt teach anything...STAY AWAY
This professor is very nice and helpful. The work load is hard because Calc. is hard not because of the teacher.
Kotey is such a good guy, and a good professor. He always offers help to his students and he basically tells you exactly what will be on the exams, and he is a generous grader. He is down with new age slang too. Ok, you can bounce.
the course was difficult, but he explained the material clearly; extremely fair on exams; is also quite merciful and lenient; veritably wants the students to do well
Great teacher, wants students to do well and will help in class if you struggle. His tests are impossible though. He doesnt always give a curve but will most likely curve your final grade a lot if he thinks you tried during the semester
Not bad trys to help you along.Accent is kind of bad
Very easy, very nice. Every test was either take home or open book (including the final). Scales grades and is very fair. Take him.
he's a very nice man...explains everything very well and is helpful to those that don't understand
Nice guy, horrible professor. He can't teach, unless you like learning ONLY examples. He gives no notes and his explanations are poor. He is never available when he says he is, so extra help is impossible to receive. If you have to take the class, take it in the summer or with someone else.
HE SUCKS!!!!! RUN!!!!!!!! Can't teach, is never available and has lack of teaching skills. If you LOVE examples, he is your best friend. His test are impossible to pass and he CAN'T TEACH!! Any Cosines?
He is a nice individual, but if you're concerned for doing well in this class, you may want to select another professor. You have to keep on top each class, and may need to review notes on a daily basis just to earn a B. Kotey is as intelligent as they come, but cannot explain it that well. Accent also is difficult to understand.
Run as far away from this man as you can. The tests are incredibly hard to get even a B on because he puts information on there that he doesn't 'teach', which is by the way something he never does. All he ever does is put random examples on the board and never teaches the material in an organized manner.
nice guy real chill he aint as bad as these ppl say in 07 spring semister. hard to understand with accent but has easy tests that are from hw questions. very realistic to get a B or better in the class he changes the numbers..78 is like a B-. if u cant get another prof dont worry if u get him just take his notes and do the hw for test review.
He is extremely helpful. He knows this subject is hard and does as much as he can to help out his students. If you don't pay attn or take notes you'll struggle but overall i would take him again. He is interesting and while he does have an accent he is more than welcome to explain something again.TAKE HIM!
He is a really nice and fun guy, but his class is kind of hard. He is not very good at explaining things that students do not understand. He curves grades by a lot. Overall, the class is not great, but it is not bad either.
Kotey isn't the best teacher, but he is a real nice guy. He knows his stuff and is great at math. You kind of have to teach yourself a lot but he gives you the benefit of the doubt a lot of the time. I had a 66 average in the class and he gave me C+ so he is very generous.
good but difficult
Stay away at all costs. He assigns maple homework that is impossible and it greatly effects your grade. Unclear about what will be on tests and is a terrible grader. I asked him when his office hours were, his response, "I don't have office hours."
DO NOT TAKE! You will want to drop out of this class, not only because the class is tough, but because he will teach you NOTHING. All he does all class, every class, is do random problems on the board. He will randomly assign homework [we only had about four assignment] BUT those four assignments ended up being about a forth of our final grade!
I took this professor for calc 1 and 2, calc 1 was easier material so i got a decent grade, but he isn't the best explainer. He is extremely nice and curves well because I was failing calc 2 and he gave me a c-. I wouldn't recommend him.
Calc 1 with this man was incredible. He is very challenging but once conquering the difficulties you will win at life. Very help as well.
He is brilliant & he will make you work on your critical thinking skills applying everything that you have learned. He may not be the best at explaining, but he is there if help is needed. I would recommend him if you want to learn. If you want an easy A this is not the class for you.
Really tough. His thick accent is pretty easy to get past, but he doesn't 'teach,' he just gives example after example. He seems nice, but his syllabus makes no sense, and he never responds to questions emailed to him. Overall, meh.
I had him for both semesters. He gave me a new found appreciation for calculus and math in general. He doesn't make things easy because he wants the students to learn & once you have found your motivation to learn the class shouldn't be as difficult as everyone makes it seem.
Horrible teacher, I would NOT recommend him. He does not explain material clearly and mocks students if they ask questions in class. He did not follow the syllabus and his tests were EXTREMELY difficult. If you miss a class, he will call you out in front of everyone.
He's just a terrible all around professor. He is unclear with everything. Tests are very hard. Only people that took calculus in high school do well in his course. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Prof Kotey will answer any and all questions you have in class. This is the main reason I believe he is a great professor and hes very passionate and funny
Look, Professor Kotey is a nice guy, but I've had better calc teachers. He's incredibly intelligent, but assumes that everyone in the room knows everything he does so he skips a lot of steps in a problem and makes learning the material more confusing. i wouldnt recommend him to anyone but if you get him its not the end of the world. youll be fine.
Kotey is a really nice guy but you have to try in the class to really do good in it. He is hilarious, just laugh with him dont get too offended, he has a different type of humor. His grading is really nice like a 70 could be a B in his class if he knows you tried alot. Ask questions after class if you dont get it, he would be nicer then.
Hes nice but he is hard to understand and doesnt teach material clearly because he expects you to know it. I failed his class but when I retook Calculus next semester with a different teacher I received an A
Kotey is a really funny and nice guy, his class is just really hard. I personally didn't take calc in high school ad struggled through the entire course. I ended up passing with a C+ after barely staying afloat all semester because he's very generous with the final grades. Go to class, do all the practice probs. Text examples will be on the exams!!
He was tough, but I don't blame him. He wants to make sure all his students know the topics well. If you want to pass exams, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, even though it's not required. You can go to him for help although he won't usually check emails. Great prof.
Very knowledgeable but does not know how to explain things. He has a heavy accent so its hard to understand him, you get used to it after a while. Made a joke here and there and dropped the lowest test score out of 3 tests, not including the final. No mid-term. If you can, avoid him but if not, you're gonna have to put some extra work in.
He's hard to understand simply because of his accent. He is not clear in explaining the material he is teaching and just jumps straight into things. Also, don't expect any quick email replies and he's almost never available for office hours if you need help. You can use your computer on exams and he uses questions from the book that are on Chegg.
Beware that you can be an A+ student in every class and he even is impressed by you for getting nearly perfect on every test, but he forgets to teach certain topics that are on the exam. He also doesn't go by his syllabus, so the final is 40% of your grade and if you do ok your grade is not what it should be. You'll be better off not taking him.
ill be straight up with ya. He is a great professor, cares about your learning, teaches well and goes over problems during class. Just listen to him during class, practice and you will do well on tests. Gives 4 tests including final, removes worst test before final. final is weighted heavily but its usually the problems he goes over well in class.
The previous reviews might scare you away from Professor Kotey's class. But during semester, most of my fears quickly vanished due to his encouraging words and his obvious interest in teaching his students. In order for you to pass you will have to put in the work!Tips for doing well:#1 Do your homework #2 Ask for clarification #3 Review tests
He grades how he likes and won't tell you about it until after the test. His grading system is confusing and at least for me he is hard to understand.
Nice guy but hard to understand. He goes too fast and is not clear. He does not have an office therefore no office hours. He grades hard, is unclear, and moves through material quickly. I would avoid taking his class. There are better calc professors at SHU.
He is a stud. He may not be the best teacher, but he sees the best in people and he really is a great person. It is easy to pass with his grading scale, but you need to put in the work. Do the homework and especially the word problems, he takes them straight from online and the textbook. Lastly, helpful hint: always say yes (if you know, you know)
One of the worst teachers at SHU. Does not explan anything and goes extremely fast. He will teach new material and then put it on a quiz that same day. I strongly recommend to find anyone but him. You cannot understand him due to his accent, he laughs when you ask a question, and does not seem to care about anything but cramming material.
Very passionate about Calculus, however I do not agree with his teaching method. Yells at students for taking notes when he is lecturing (it's my $ I'll do what I want), and can come across as plain rude (made a girl cry in my class after accusing her of not doing her hw). Textbook terrible. If you aren't good at math, stay away. Funny guy though
Seems like a decent guy but not a good prof. Avoid him if you can. He flies through the material in the lectures and makes everything unclear without following the syllabus. There were at least 3 or 4 tests and a good amount of quizzes. He'll sometimes assign problems that weren't even discussed in class.
The math Dept at Seton Hall is a "pick your poison" situation, you can never win. Prof Kotey's syllabus and grading is clear, but that means nothing. This class is run like 6th grade, he will literally YELL at you. The smart ppl get A's/B's, avg ppl will get a C-, and ppl who struggle with math will prob fail. He has tenure, he will fail you, sorry
Yells at your for asking questions and pulls random topics on tests
I asked him what topics were going to be on the final, instead he yelled at me like a crazy person. Definitely take this class if you want to work with mental patients as you will learn to be a psychologist through this class.
He is not a good professor. I did okay in the course but seriously avoid taking his class. I took AP and still got confused on things I had previously learned. He makes everything confusing. And has very few grades in the gradebook so if you do bad one time, it will haunt your grade. He will not teach you calculus well. Avoid at all cost
I took professor Kotey in hs for AP calc and stats. One of the best human beings you can come across. His methods in unorthodox, however you leave his class knowing more than when you went in. The bad reviews I see above breaks my heart hes a genuine great teacher
Avoid him, your seriously better off taking Laura Schoppmann (sometimes in the summer). Tests are next to impossible to do good on and there are only 3 total, which is extremely dangerous. He does curve hard and bumps you a point or two at the end but still bad idea. My buddy got a C-, retook calc and got an A with the other professor I mentioned.
Professor Kotey is a very caring professor in his own way, if you truly put in the effort it will reflect on your grade. He is available outside of class and is willing to answer any and all questions. He can be tough at times but overall not terrible.
Godwin is a very hard teacher. If you are not good with accents do not take him. If you also are not good at math DO NOT take him. He barely teaches he only lectures and he does not explain things he writes down. He also is rude about stuff if you do not know it. Please do not bother with this class or this professor. Save your mental health.
kotey grades rlly harshly and he doesn't even give extra credit. He just sits in his chair and writes on the board and expects u know calculus when he doesn't even thoroughly explain anything!!! he gets mad when u dont know it quickly and he goes too freakin fast. i dread each time i went to this class. save urself pls. SOS
You will sit in a class literally staring at the wall for almost two hours. You will only be pulled out of it by him saying yes or no and hello bc he demands you respond every time he says something. Never before in my life have I wanted to cry in a class more than I have in this one. CALC 1 I'm sure is great, but not with this professor.
Does not explain content clearly, just shows how to solve problems. Tests are 90% of the grade and no extra credit is offered. Small curve. I do not believe I know Calculus after finishing this class.
Does not respond to emails. Belittles entire classes of relatively new students for not understanding topics he's failed to explain. He had to explain almost 80% of the Final exam because of his failure as an educator.
The class is exactly like when you were in middle school learning algebra from you dad and he started progressively getting scarier and then your hw is covered in tears. yes. that is the embodiment of this class. There are 4 tests and 3 quizzes but that's about it. He's funny but be prepared for him to call you out in class.
I contemplated getting a therapist half way through the semester because of him. He doesn't know how to teach and is very mean. I was struggling with the material and instead of helping me, he called me lazy and accused me of not paying attention. This kind of 'teaching' should not be allowed. For your own sake and well-being, AVOID THIS PROF!
One of the worst calc teachers in existence. He does not pity students. No homework grade or project grade. He only gives a few exams and if u never taken calc before you're screwed. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Kotey is the worst professor i have ever encountered. He teaches as if you understand every topic before coming to the class. He does not explain anything clearly and jumps right into hard problems. He is lazy and sits in his chair the entirety of the class. When you ask him for help he laughs at you and accuses you of not paying attention. AVOID!
In reality, Prof Kotey is a really good professor. He always gives partial credit when you don't find the correct answer in a test.
He tried his best to give us more opportunities to succeed
Kotey was nothing short of amazing. You get back the work you put in. I struggle in calc but if you showed effort he will help you. he drops your lowest exam and your tests are all textbook questions. the more you show you care about your grades throughout the semester the more he will want to see you succeed. would take him a million times again.
He's a good teacher who wants his students to succeed. He may get angsty with questions but answers them well. If you put in the effort, he'll help you earn a good grade. His tests and quizzes mostly come from homework and class discussions, so do your homework and take detailed notes.
You can pass the class if you put in the effort and do the homework, as the tests/quizzes tend to be similar. However, he can be hard to understand, and his explanations can be confusing, especially if you've never taken calc before. He does care about his students and their success, as he will take the time to answer questions if needed
I'm not the best with calc and honestly professor Kotey is a caring guy and wants to see you succeed. However, his class is quite hard and the tests are difficult. HW is not mandatory but I would recommend doing all of it, some questions can end up on quizzes or exams.
Caring guy, horrible teacher. You're only graded on two tests and two quizzes (which are VERY difficult and short), and he picks the hardest questions for the exam. Some are homework repeats, gives partial credit if work is shown, but it still sucks. He explains using variables (no numbers) so it's confusing. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Kotey was great overall. We had 2 quizzes, 2 tests, and 1 final. He doesn't check homework, but he uses questions directly from the book for quizzes, tests, and classwork so I'd say buy the book. He's a really caring and friendly guy who just wants everyone to do well. He gave us a 3rd test so he could drop our lowest test too. Beware of dad jokes!
whoever said kotey was great is lying. he's not the absolute worst but youre gonna have to put in blood sweat and tears if you want an a or b. no curves, no homework grades, your entire grade is 2 exams +2 quizzes + final. hes kinda funny ill give that to him but his tests are not a joke. uses the hardest questions for exams and sucks at explaining
i drove to this class without a seatbelt on hoping i'd get hit by a car before making it to school.
Save yourself. This guy does not like any one of us nor remembers any of our names. He's just their to teach and get it over with. His explanations are terrible and he gives homework that is not put in the gradebook. All you have is tests and quizzes, which makes it difficult to save your grade if you bomb one of them. Hopes and prayers!
He's a nice guy but a horrible professor. He tries to give you points and opportunities but your grade is decided on only tests and quizzes. He has convoluted explanations because he tries to make you understand the material rather than just memorize it which usually end up being really confusing. If you get this guy do all the hw and pray.
He is a great professor. Meeting with him to discuss what you're struggling with, doing the homework, and participating makes a difference. Of all the calc professors, Kotey's the one to take. His explanations are clear and he provides formulas during exams.
