Dr. Kim is a good professor, but you need to be really careful and not lose points on REEF participation and make sure you actually understand the hw. If you just skate by and then cram you'll end up with a C at best.
Gets upset easily if you don't ask the right question. She also goes quick, then says she doesn't when asked to slow down a bit. Overall the usual of what you'd expect from a Genetics course. I believe this is her first year teaching here.
Professor Kim is a good teacher. Her power points are very clear (& they're posted), and if you study the material given (pp lectures, quizzes, hw, iclicker questions), you can get an A. She takes problems that have been seen before, sometimes word for word, and puts it on the test. This class is on track with other gen classes, don't be deterred.
I love Prof Kim! This was her first year teaching Genetics and she was super caring, for example I think she got more nervous than we were for the first exam. Offers review sessions, practice problems, test questions are straightforward and like the book homework. She tries very hard for this class to be as enjoyable as possible. TAKE GOHEUN!
Her tests are super easy, with questions copied word for word from quizzes and homework. Study these and you'll get an A for sure. She has clicker questions in class, so you do need to show up, but every homework is a completion grade and you do them together in discussion section. There's weekly quizzes online but they're not bad. I'd take again
Hard tests, discussion is pointless because all you do is take quizzes. She goes extremely fasts in lectures so be ready to read that book to completely understand things. She's nice but she can be passive aggressive. Not really nothing else to say other than Goodluck if you get her.
like pointed out before me, discussion sections are useless. Tests are very hard and not curved. She goes by super fast and I can barely understand what she's saying half the time
Dr. Kim assigns a lot of homework and quizzes throughout the semester, along with REEF Polling during every class, but DO YOUR BEST ON THESE! IT helps bring your course grade up and give you a little cushion if you don't do so well on the exams. Her practice exams weren't always helpful but if you study the quizzes and such, you'll be fine!!!
Kim was ok. Her lectures were wayyy too fast, but if you went back and looked at the posted slides you could get all the material you needed. Her lecturing was subpar, but if you put in the work to fill in the knowledge gaps that she failed to communicate in lecture but that she wanted you to know, you could get A's. Required more outside work.
Dr. Kim definitely made this class harder than last semester since there were too much A's. This class has been the hardest class I've taken here so far. Genetics is no joke! Discussion is pointless since you only take quizzes. I would've been more helpful if there was concepts covered. Also, Dr. Kim goes through slides way fast. Just go for reef
Material could have been presented in a better format. Lectures were pretty dry, as she would just read off the slides. Discussion sections felt pointless, we would take our quiz and then leave. Very helpful in group office hours, and caring in individual circumstances. Use the quizzes and homeworks to study, forming a group would also help.
Dr. Kim is a really sweet lady but her class is challenging. Discussion sections are used to take online quizzes (you have to go to get the code). I had discussion section the day after the test each time and the quiz was always over new stuff I hadn't even looked at yet because I was studying for the test. Go to class for reef but notes are online
The class isn't the hardest but it also wasn't the best experience. Lectures consist of her reading off the slides and you can tell she's just trying to get through them . The tests were difficult but studying the homework that she gives helps A LOT. The only thing that saved me in this class is the group assignment she gave.
Dr. Kim was not a great Genetics Professor. Her lectures are just her reading off slides. She often loses her place or doesn't know what the slide is about and will stop class for a good 15 seconds to read her slide to see what it is about. She could at least look over the slides once before she lectures. The discussions are unhelpful as well.
listen to other recent reviews - she really just tries to get through the slides, but the slides are semi-helpful. Tests can be very difficult - she likes to ask double-negative APPLICATION questions rather than just straightforward ones that would still show your knowledge. Even with the 5min collaboration on quizzes, they were still pretty hard.
Her lectures are mostly slides so make sure you take notes on the extra stuff she says in class that are not on the slides. Her tests are pretty hard and I would mostly study past quizzes and homework. Her class isn't bad but its definitely not easy.
I felt that this course was very fair. HW and quiz every week. REWATCH HER LECTURES. She goes over clearly what you need to know and what you don't. The book was ok but I only really used it for hw. REEF almost every lecture for participation. She drops 2 quiz grades and 1 hw. Dr. Kim really sets you up for success, you just can't be lazy.
I loved Dr. Kim as a person but her lectures can be confusing and very dense. She actually dropped 3 quiz grades for us instead of 2 which is nice; she really wants you to succeed. Her exams usually consist of reworded hw, quizzes, and practice exams with some new hard questions thrown in. I put in a LOT of effort for this class just for a B
Most organized professor I have taken. Every resource is uploaded promptly at the same times every week. You know exactly how you will be graded and what kinds of questions and content are tested. Never was surprised. The class was so organized, it was impossible to fail if you just did the work, showed up, and studied, maybe an occasional OH.
While Kim is a nice professor and will go out of her way to help you if you come to her office hours, her lectures are brutal. If she starts running out of time, she'll zoom through the material and it's easy to get very lost. Her first midterm will be the hardest you'll ever take for the semester. Get ready to read after class a lot.
The class has changed up a lot so most of the older reviews won't apply. Lectures are often rushed, convoluted, hard to sit through. Homework is frustrating as most of the material involved isn't taught until the day its due. Discussion is reserved for weekly quizzes which tank your grades. Overall, the entire class is frustrating.
Dr. Kim is caring and wants her students to succeed. That being said, the 3 midterms are difficult and you have to study many days before the exam if you want to do well. She curves the tests by a few points but not enough to save your grade. In the middle of the semester she offers an extra credit group assignment that can bump your grade by 2%
Dr. Kim makes you work for the grade, but it helped that the final was easier than the midterms. She really cares about her students, and her office hours were very helpful. If you put in the work and do the extra practice and understand it, the tests aren't too bad. She's such a sweet person and gives a solid amount of extra credit.
Dr. Kim is super nice, but the only reason I'm doing fairly well is because I attended office hours every week. The homework she assigns is almost impossible to do just based on lectures (for me anyways). Office hours was a life saver but people who don't go definitely struggle in this class. Overall, I'd take her again, but it's been a long journey
Genetics, regardless of who you take it with, it's hard stuff. On the edge of whether you should take her? I 100% recommend her. Her class has challenged me but has also been the most rewarding. TIPS: PPTs (things taught in class) EVERYTHING you have to know. Textbook useless. Go to OH, HW probs pops up on tests.
Lectures are ppt slides, though not very concise. In general not the best lectures considering the test material. Read the book, it's much more clear. Do all the practice tests without notes and youll be ok. Everyone failed 1st test, but easier after that. Go to OH and read book to do well, lectures are secondary.
She is a very good professor. The key to get an A on the class is to do ALL the practice problems that she give you + hw + practice tests. The practice problems are similar to her exam style. Most of my class failed the first exam. The reason I got an 89 on the first exam was because undid all the practice problems 3 times. Go to all OH
Genetics was one of the hardest classes I've had to take, but it is doable with Kim. Her first test was the hardest for everyone, but her other midterms and the final were manageable. Make sure to review the homework and practice problems she gives, all the Instapolls, and the quizzes before the exams. Doable, but with a alot of effort to get an A.
she does not answer in-class questions, discussions arent your traditional discussions, and you will use that time to take quizzes alone, youll have to learn everything on your own, she doesn't know how to explain things at all, emphasis on at ALL. Take another professor, positive note: grading isnt so harsh!
Dr. Kim is one of the best professors I've ever had! A majority of the class did poorly on the first exam, but don't be discouraged by this because the class does get easier if you put in the effort. She goes out of her way to help you individually evaluate what you need to do in terms of studying. I went from failing her class to getting an A!
A great professor! Tests are often similar to practice tests. Her slides contain great information. Weekly homework assignments that you should seek to understand, which will help you later on. Very interesting/fun class. Highly recommend Kim for BIO 325. There are weekly quizzes during discussion. Test scores usually improve after the first exam.
As a non-science major, I thought that Dr. Kim's class was great. It isn't too hard, but you have to go to class. There are also daily instapoll questions, some are for attendance/participation whereas some go toward your grade, but it's completely random. The tests are MC with short answers.
This class was pretty hard, but Dr. Kim provides tons of resources. Exam q's repeated from past exams, quizzes, etc. Quizzes and exams were tricky and required a very deep understanding. HW is completion-based and she offers extra credit. Dr. Kim is a great prof but I struggled in this class. Not a bad choice, but be prepared to work hard for an A
Kim is a good professor but sometimes lecture gets a little confusing. Exams are heavily based on the lecture, quizzes and homework but is non-cumulative. Homework isnt too bad if you attend office hours but there are a lot of questions. The quizzes are online on canvas and are semi-easy. There is extra credit but be prepared to work for an A
Dr. Kim was a great professor. There are weekly homeworks and quizzes but the grading is generous and attendance is only a small percentage of your final grade. She cares about her students and creates many extra credit opportunities. Even for students not strong in science, this should be a pretty easy class to do well in. There is no textbook.
Ever since class transitioned online all the reviews you're reading wont matter. Possibly the WORST class ever. You would think she would have sympathy since class is online now. She makes you watch 35-50 min videos before each lecture, and then IN class you do instapolls. Idk who told her to structure her class this way but it is TERRIBLE!!!
She tries very hard for her students. Most of the professors at UT do, which is why they're at UT. I was honestly surprised when I found out that she had office hours every single weekday for 2 hours, in addition to the 2 hours of prerecorded lectures on her weekends and 6 hours of class she spends giving live lectures. Taking genetics? Take Goheun
Powerpoint teaching style. She posts 1 hr pre-lecture vids before class starts. In class she restates some points of the PowerPoint + instapolls. The quizzes are really hard. You can take it together with other people, but we still got Bs on them. Her exams are like her PS and homework.
Hard to understand. English is not her first language so she isnt able to comprehensively explain the difficult concepts in genetics. Her class isnt too hard though, just be prepared to spend extra time on stuff she didnt explain well
Homework, problem sets, and quizzes due each week. No point of reading the textbooks because everything is lecture based. Her exams were really hard unless spend hours going over the instapolls, quizzes, homework, and problems sets over and over agian.
1 hw, 1 PS, and 1 quiz every week but trust me they're not easy and if you have TA Emily, gl your gonna need it LOL. Kim is really nice but she goes very fast and the exams are very hard so you really have to know your material. She prob teaches the most out of all the genetics professors but rip my grade :( harder than ochem and that says a lot!!!
I think professor Kim is a good lecturer. She keeps content relevant by relating it to current science developments. The assignments and quizzes are the same every week and not too hard. Sometimes the homework questions aren't content covered by the lectures, but it's a completion grade so this isn't a problem.
Quizzes and tests are hard and the depth of knowledge needed to do well isn't really covered in lecture. She covers the broad, big picture and not the specifics and thats what you're tested on. Other genetics teachers are more forgiving when it come to grading, like dropping more grades or curving test grades. Definitely harder than ochem!!!!!
bombarded her students with prelecture+lectures weekly & it was a waste of time. Pre-lecture was a 45 minute video going over a ppt with minimal info. The combo of both a pre-lecture and weekly lectures was too much & essentially 'd going to class five times per week sometimes. Lecture was the exact same ppt and was pointless too much broad info
SOME ppl who complain abt dr. kim are those who rely on peers in class to send them answers and don't put in honest work. dr. kim's lecture slides are full of useful info. lectures and videos are supplementary but also important. reviewing learning objectives and doing problems is key! majority of class is a completion grade, and she's such a gem!
The videos you had to watch before class were sometimes an hour long, which felt time consuming since we still had to attend normal class. Quizzes were really hard even though you can work with peers during them. HWs are all completion grades which was great. Lectures felt boring but overall it's an okay class w/lots of grades which helps.
Dr. Kim is a pretty solid choice for genetics! I believe that an A was easily attainable as long as you complete homework, quizzes, and problem sets you'll be set for the tests. Practice tests resembled exams pretty closely as well. Dr. Kim clearly cares about student success and makes herself available throughout the week.
This course had excessive amount of work tbh. The quiz time limits are pretty harsh considering we could only contact people via messaging. There are so many moving parts to this course. I remember a week where we had a 2-hour exam, two 45 min prelecture vids, two lectures, hw, ps, instapolls, and an optional lab. Just unnecessarily chaotic.
I took Kims genetics online because of covid, and the class itself was fairly easy. 36% of the grade is basically participation because homeworks and problem sets are graded on completion. Her tests are only worth 45% of the grade and the lowest is replaced by labs if you do them. The class isnt bad at all if you put in a decent amount of effort
Dr. Kim tended to take up more time than she should've, given that she was only scheduled for MWF 1 hour lectures, as well as a lab. Her lectures were very heavy, and her exams involved understanding/applying the concepts she taught. Lots of homework and extra assignments, but she also gave us lots of opportunities to earn extra credit.
I am taking Professor Kim now and absolutely love her. The material is somewhat difficult in its own regard, but she has a very widespread grading distribution that doesn't solely rely upon exams, gives a small amount of extra credit, and gives an option to have a test score replaced. The class is a lot of work, but it's upperdiv bio... come on lol
This week we have a 2-hour midterm, 2 50-min pre-lectures, 2 regular lectures, 30 min quiz, homework due, AND (optional) lab due. This class is WORK. Like, unnecessary amounts of it. Kim was nice at the beginning of the semester but as time goes on she's getting less accessible and the material is only getting tougher. Don't underestimate genetics!
I took one other genetics class before, but Kims style was far better in my opinion. There are a lot of assignments but they are usually short and for participation. The exams were fair but its genetics so study!! Her office hours were so helpful and she was very kind. This is a class where you can succeed easily if you put the work in.
Dr. Kim has clear grading criteria for evey assignment. Genetics is quite difficult but she made it easy to understand. The textbook is needed for the homework problems so you need it. She was very caring and was clear in what she expected. Lectures condensed the material and were colorful.
Dr. Kim wants you to succeed, to do so don't fall behind and attend her office hours. She is always willing to help and clear up any confusion. She understood the stress we were all under and is very understanding with due dates and assignments.
She is kind of an awful lecturer lol. Her grading scheme is fair though and there is a lot to off-balance the really hard exams she gives. Her class is a lot harder than other genetic professors from what I have heard, so I would not take it again. She is a really kind person just not the best lecturer and the hmwk is insanely long.
Lectures were not very informational. Homework assignments were too long. Does give extra credit though.
Dr. Kim designed the class in a way that you would be able to get B's in all exams and still pass with an A. there are weekly quizzes, HW, and PS assignments but HW and PS are graded on completion. She is kind but she doesn't do a good job explaining the materials. I had to go back to past classes notes to understand lots of materials.
Dr. Kim was the sweetest. There are a lot of assignments in the class and the material can get confusing, but she does give a lot of opportunities to get help/collaborate with other students on most of the assignments. To study for the midterms, it helps to go through all the previous material: HW, quizzes, past exams etc
this class in general was agonizingly hard, but if you need bio 325 to complete major requirements she's your best bet. she designed the class to have as many EC opportunities possible and has 3 office hours through the week (one which she posts). she truly wants you to succeed. the class content is just extremely difficult and can be exhausting.
Dr. Kim's teaching style was very beneficial for me personally. Her Pre-Lectures that you are expected to watch before class are a bit confusing, but going to the actual lectures and completing Instapolls really helped clear things up for me. Discussion sections are also beneficial if you have a good group.
Dr. Kim is an amazing Genetics professor! The content itself can be very difficult but she does a great job at explaining everything. The exams are very similar to the homework, problem sets, and quizzes that she gives us so you should be prepared for the exams. Her office hours are super helpful because she goes over every single homework problem.
Dr. Kim is a great professor. The class is very lecture heavy and there are pre-lecture videos to watch. However, she gives many opportunites to get a good grade in the class. Make sure to attend office hours and discussion section. There are two assignments and a quiz due every week but you can collaborate with peers.
Dr. Kim is one of the best professors I've ever had at UT. Genetics definitely required me to put in the work to do well but the class is structured to be very forgiving, even if you have a bad exam or quiz. Dr. Kim is so passionate about teaching, and I would highly recommend her!!!
Dr. Kim is great. Lectures were clear, she was accessible outside class, lots of extensions + drop options. Workload is high but pretty manageable. The worst part were the prelecture videos (~35 min long but 1-2 hrs if you take notes like I did). Exams match past exams, quiz questions, and instapolls.
Dr Kim is one of the nicest professors I've met. She is very encouraging and want her students to do well. She makes you feel like you are not alone. Go to her office hours! she goes through concepts again in her OH and go over the homework. There are weekly HWs, quizzes and problem sets but trust me they are very doable.
I took BIO302F but that wasn't an option on here lol. Her lectures are painfully boring but getting an A is very doable. There's so many assignments like literally so many, it feels like one is due every two seconds, but if you actually do them, you'll definitely get a good grade in the class, most of the time they're not hard, just annoying to do.
I thought this course was fairly difficult, Exams get harder as you go start off strong. Go to her OH if you want that A, have her go over the homework and then you should go over it AGAIN after and understand why she did what she did.
STAY AWAY FROM DR KIM. She's the only genetics professor that gives HW, Quizzes and exams. None of which are easy or short. She gives you exams then has homework and quizzes due the same week. Her exams are so hard and she does not give enough time for them. She tries to give EC, but it doesn't help. Take it in the summer, or find another prof.
Course was organized very well, lots of assignments get dropped, exams are open note and online. The class is challenging but Kim helps you to succeed. So glad I took this prof
the lectures do not correlate to the quizzes, homeworks or test. i studied for days for each test only to find the tests have no correlation to learned material in class. there are no curves and little resources that actually help.
Dr. Kim was an extremely unhelpful professor. Her exams were completely unrelated to anything she teaches and the quizzes are difficult. It was online and open note, but it does not take away from the fact that she did not teacher her material well. She makes it sound like you are going to be prepared, but you won't.
the worst professor i've ever had at ut. her class changed a lot this semester. tests are next to impossible to score high on and quizzes and practice exams are 20 times easier than the test. every assignment is hard except homeworks so there isn't enough to boost grades. don't have a lot of resources to do well or improve. ta's don't know much
comes across very nice and says she wants you to succeed but doesn't really do a lot for it. exams don't correlate with material we learn and practice we get. i studied over a week for exams, did all practice, went to office hours, and read the textbook and was still not able to do well on exams. take anyone else and avoid her at all costs
Such an infuriating class. The textbook, lectures, practice exams do not prepare you for the tests in the slightest. You will not know what you need to know for the tests. You barely understand what the questions ask never mind what the answers even mean. Lengthy and very time consuming assignments every week. This class is degrading.
Homeworks, quizzes, instapolls seem like a lot but they are the best way to score well on the exams. Listen to her tips. Some exam questions seemed to match with additional homework questions she suggested, as well as quizzes and instapolls. All you have to do is pay attention and have some common sense. Exams are open book after all!
just too much. nice person but super difficult way of teaching and testing. a lot of hw too no other teacher gives as much work as she does. class or quizzes will not prepare you for tests. avoid this class
Finally got an A on the last midterm. You're better off just watching the lectures online. Rewind that jawn until you get it. Don't waste your time getting lost in class, just way too much content. Half the struggle is understanding what she's even asking. Read Q's at least 6 times before answering like I'm so fr Drops & extra credit came clutch
Kim is the nicest professor I've had at UT thus far. That being said her excellent organization, extra credit, and helpful hw sessions can only go so far. Exams were online open-note but so beyond what was taught in lecture. Other assignments cushioned my grade but every exam had such a low class average idk how anybody could get an A.
Lots of work....
She's a nice person and has extensions on all of her assignments but that's about it for the good stuff. There are so many assignments (on the last week of the semester we had a homework, lab report, quiz, midterm, and final all within 5 days). Her lectures are long and her exams and quizzes are difficult. Take someone else if you can!
She's a kind lady, but I did not resonate with her class and lectures. Her exams are so hard to do well on and her exams were beyond the material she taught in class. We had quizzes and HWs every week and extra credit would not help at all. Her averages were so low and she would make us feel like we were prepared when we weren't prepared at all.
Dr. Kim's class was quite stressful to be perfectly honest. She had a really nice 24 hour grace period on all assignments other than exams (which were all on canvas and open for about 18 hours). On exams you'd have 31 questions to do in 2 hours, and they were quite difficult. Dr Kim took pride in the fact that notes wouldn't help and she was right.
One of the worst classes I have taken. Lectures were easy to follow through but nothing prepares you for the exams. Also, exams were open note online but final was comprehensive and closed note. If you take this class, be prepared to spend hours and hours studying.
dr. kim is a really sweet professor with a passion for genetics. the grading is very reasonable (offers extra credit, hw is graded on effort, instapolls can be resubmitted, etc). the exam questions can be tricky but if you study the instapolls and quizzes you'll be fine.
I found her lectures unhelpful and her tests/quizzes went beyond what she taught in class. The material isn't too difficult once you get used to it, but tests especially were convoluted and don't cover lectures well. Averages were consistently low and she was weirdly pass-agr about it. Lenient grader but not an instructor that prepares students.
going to lectures not helpful. so many assignments, yes she gives drops, but be prepared to put in a lot of effort every week on hw and the quizzes. tests are so hard; no matter how much i studied, always fumbled. final was even harder. the average was so low but no curve. don't take; if u do decide to take her, do the hw first before the quizzes.
Dr. Kim is so nice, but she was not the best professor. I struggled so much in this class; the class content is very heavy and her lectures didn't help me. I relied heavily on the textbook and doing the homeworks again since her exams and quizzes were so difficult. She has a 24 hour grace period for assignments that I was grateful for.
Everyone recommended her for genetics but she recently changed her grading scheme masking it harder to get an A. Very sweet lady, but the content was just so hard. Tests were open note but the averages were in the 60s and 70s, Lots of extra credit, but just a difficult class. Be prepared to put the work in.
Dr. Kim is very sweet, but she is not the best lecturer. There is a homework assignment every week, and is VERY long (can go up to 1000 words per HW assignment), although she does go over homework in her office hours. Exams are VERY difficult and the questions dont even reflect what we learned in class.
Her in class lectures are pretty easy to understand but then when you get to the test, those simple lecture notes don't really prepare you. I found the tests to be pretty difficult and hard to finish on time. There were many "holes" in her notes where she would skim through and it would show up on the test and I felt underprepared.
Homework was graded for completion instead of correctness, so it helped me learn the material without the stress of grades. She was available with office hours and was always willing to help students. The course itself was challenging, but doable. Exams were open note, so they tested problem solving abilities rather than memorization skills.
She is genuinely a nice person as an individual but her teaching style was not any that helped me learn. The lectures were very shallow and when it came to exam it was very long and required so much which she doesn't prepare students for. Some topics are really interesting and you might think you got it but her questions are completely different.
This class was very difficult. Kim was a good person and very understanding if you had technical issues with exams. For me, her lectures did not help me at all. I had to learn everything on my own.
Dr. Kim was so nice that it's almost hard to rate her bad, but man was this the worst class I've ever taken. The tests and quizzes are impossible. If you understand the lecture, it doesn't mean you will do well on tests or quizzes. Luckily the discussion extra credit and homeworks (also hard, but her office hours help) raised my grade.
This is a pretty hard class. The tests and quizzes are really difficult and very hard to study for.
Kim is a very nice person and wants her students to succeed. Weekly quizzes and 3 exams that are open-note and pretty straightforward (also on Quizlet). Weekly HWs are graded for completeness and are relevant to the exams. Kim offers extra credit (usually 3 points) on all exams. Class is very manageable if you can understand the basics.
Dr. Kim is a very understanding and helpful professor. I just find it difficult to bear her lectures. It's difficult to follow her point, in the harder material, and she asks questions a lot which can make class stressful and tense. I know she just wants us to learn well.
I have one thing to say about the difficulty of this course: the exams. Everything else was fine and completely doable (the weekly quizzes, weekly homework, instapolls, labs, etc) but the midterms were so hard. They were online and timed, but there was not enough time to get the questions done considering their complexity.
Dr. Kim is very nice and pretty understanding, but this class was insanely hard. I watched lectures, read the textbook, went to discussion & I still thought tests were extremely hard. Test averages were never over 70% and the average for the final was in the 50s. She is also not great at explaining concepts. The extra credit was helpful though.
Dr. Kim is very nice and responsive, you can tell she cares about the students. However, I found lectures hard to sit through: she asks a lot of questions to the class more than focusing on teaching the content. The class is difficult. Low exam averages, weekly quizzes and homework, lots of extra credit. I had to work really hard to get an A-.
I like genetics, but I wish Dr. Kim made the class more interesting. I felt that her lectures were boring and too easy. There was way too much to do at home, since online quizzes and HW's were due every week. Tests were hard, but were online and open-note. Lots of extra credit. It helps to do the HW, do practice exams, and watch OH recordings.
As long as you stay on top of your assignments and always go to class with the intent of learning, you will do very well in the class. Good number of drops, and the grading system is designed to help you if you mess up 1-2 times. Also, make sure you have a good grasp on basic probability and conditional probability before you take genetics.
Not the most organized lecturer, but the grading scale is SO forgiving. The final was only worth 7% of your grade, and there are a lot of other free assignments that should boost your grade (along with EC). The quizzes and tests were open-note, and HW answers were available on Canvas via her recorded OH. Exam averages were bad (
dr. kim tries to be very accommodating and mindful. the class itself contains so much material that she's at times forced to blast through concepts, which can be at the expense of the students. her lectures are decent but tense sometimes because she likes to ask questions for understanding. i would advise to not skip class.
Things are manageable until the last 2 weeks when she springs a test, final, and group project on you. The final is low weight, but beware, it includes 315H AND 325H material. Do well on the first two tests, and the rest is basically completion. An A is extremely attainable with the way she weights things. Not an engaging speaker, but she's okay.
Kim is very nice but struggles to lecture in a way that makes sense to students. Under-explains everything and expects a lot of prior knowledge. Curves exams to the next highest multiple of 5 (76->80). Exams are HARD and are nothing like homework or quizzes. Go to discussion for extra practice problems. Exams online and open note but need to study.
Exams are super hard. Instapoll used in class for participation and graded on accuracy. Review homeworks and quizzes but don't expect exam questions to be similar. Exams are 20 qs in 1.5 hours which sounds reasonable but each question takes a fat 20 minutes to solve so ur always rushed. Discussion helps. Lectures recorded which is nice.
Absolutely don't recommend if you didn't take AP Bio in hs!! It moves way too fast and Dr. Kim gives very confusing and frankly useless lectures. She barely brushes on concepts and asks incredibly demanding questions on HW, quizzes, and tests. Her teaching style is confusing and difficult to keep up with. Save yourself and don't take this class.
Advice: Lacking AP bio coming into college, Professor Kim was good overall. Find knowledgeable friends and adapt. What worked best for me was reviewing online recordings. She trails, and the recordings can be in 2x speed, which is super helpful. Breakdown: 12 homeworks, 12 quizzes, 3 projects, 3 midterms. Looks bad, but it isn't, I promise.
I honestly don't understand why people say bad things about her class. Curves tests, grace period for every assignment, fair grade breakdown, etc. Her in person lectures are not the best, but watching the lecture video helps so much. Her office hours are also helpful. So easy if I get a 0 on my next project I'll still get a 94 in the class.
Some previous bio knowledge is expected, so if you haven't taken AP Bio, use the bio study resource beforehand. Lectures can be confusing/unclear, but they contain all of the information you need to know and are recorded. Quizzes and exams were fair and a curve is applied. Grade breakdown benefits students and makes it relatively easy to get an A.
The midterm is online and open note, and the curve is very generous. The final exam is close note but very easy. 7x will go to 80, and 8x will go to 90. With the curve and extra credit, is it not hard to get an A.
Not a great lecturer or a great teacher, but makes the class really manageable. Textbook readings are unnecessary for success. Grading is VERY lenient. The class may seem like it will be hard and a lot of work, but once you get into it you realize how easy everything is. Dr. Kim truly cares about her students, and she's the sweetest. Would retake.
This shouldn't be a hard class. The class isn't set up to be hard either. The 1st exam average AFTER the curve was a 70. The questions in homeworks and exams are unnecessarily hard and confusing. The class itself is fine and feels easy to where it's almost pointless to go if there wasn't attendance.
Dr. Kim is a sweetheart and knowledgeable on the subject matter. Her lectures are not always delivered directly, but they are informative and inspiring. She encourages students to work together on assignments (Homework, Quizzes, etc) except exams (allowed a sheet of notes) and her grading is always generous. TA is amazing, so go to the discussion!
I took her for both BIO315H and BIO325H. She's so sweet and as for her lectures, the things she talks about in words often are examples that show up on the test! Discussions aren't mandatory (the WS are very similar to the exams), curves are amazing (for example, an 81 is a 90), HW and quizzes are open-people, and you get a paper for a cheat sheet!
This class felt like a fever dream. Her tests prove that Kim is the problem. Kim is friendly, but I feel there is an ulterior motive for why the tests were so extraordinarily difficult. Her final is nothing like the midterms. I recommend her to stop with the curves and just make the tests more related to what we learn in class.
I was so afraid to take Kim's class but it honestly was one of the easiest classes I have taken at UT. I could have done better if I would have studied more but with the labs and homeworks along with the quizzes you can really get points from other places so its not all dependent on tests.
I had Kim for 325H, and personally, I thought it was a really easy class. The exams are straight from the lectures and discussion section worksheets, and the quizzes can be easily done by paying attention to lectures in class. Overall, I would recommend watching all the lectures before the exam and DO THE PRACTICE EXAM (it's word for word)
This was the easiest stem class I've ever taken, even without the crazy curve on exams. Quizzes are take home and collaborative.
Took her for 315H fall semester and 325H this past spring. Again, this class is very easy to succeed in unless genetics is genuinely just not your strong suit. Her grading is more than fair and office hours are very helpful. She can be a bit boring but I never went to class and just watched lectures on 1.5/2x speed which i found to be helpful.
She is nice and her TA is also helpful in regards to explaining the information taught in class. She does move through the content at weird paces, sometimes 2-3 lectures on an easy topic and oftentimes 1 lecture on a harder topic. Just set a schedule on when you will do the work as it is well structured every week. The exams were acceptable.
Dr Kim is amazing. Her syllabus/grading criteria is built in a way to help students do well. She is caring and understanding. It's important to keep up with the assignments and class to do well. It was an honor to have met a great professor like Dr Kim!
Sweet professor, but lectures were hard to stay awake for. She just reads off pre-made slides and sometimes goes too fast to get all the info during the lecture (tbf it's bio). Despite this, her grading distributions made it insanely easy to get an A. A lot of completion grades and the exam curves make it hard to do badly.
Dr. Kim is a kind, caring professor and her office hours are always super helpful. Her lectures can be a bit poorly paced and her lecture slides have blanks and questions on them, so you need to attend class and take notes on the slideshow. Grade is mostly based on 3 midterms, weekly quizzes (2 attempts), and homeworks weekly + instapolls in class
Do NOT trust these other reviews. I am actually so mad I was lied to. The tests are NOT lecture based. The content from lectures are very easy to understand, and she makes the instapolls easy to deceive you. Also, attendance is mandatory in this day and age for whatever reason. Her tests consist of a lot of "Select all that apply" questions.
Do not trust these other reviews talking about a "curve" on exams. She belives that someone with an 70.05 deserves an 80, but if you get an 80 then you deserve the same grade as someone who got a 70.05. Make it make sense. That's literally almost a 10 point difference. The curve makes no sense and screws over a lot of the class.
Dr. Kim is really nice and you can tell that she cares about her students. The bad reviews here are probably because they didn't use all the wonderful resources that she provides. Her practice exams are quite similar to the mid-terms, and all of the other assignments (home quizzes, HW, and 3 simple projects) are free 100s. Her curves EAT (81 -> 90)
Her TA, Anthony, is also very helpful! For the class there are optional discussion sections (that mostly everyone goes to), that are led by Anthony. His reviews and practice worksheets are very helpful for the exams and understanding concepts. You also get a one pager for mid terms!!
Very easy grading with a good test curve, however the lectures are kind've boring so it makes it hard to learn/be engaged. Memorization heavy and hopefully you remember your AP/IB Bio knowledge. No final, but accumulative for BIO325H. My grade is only a B+ because it's an 89 (she won't round) since I took an exam while extremely ill.
I could not recommend Dr. Kim more. I was nervous taking honors, but I had it easier than all my reg bio friends! You can tell she genuinely cares so much about her students. Collaborative quizzes, cheat sheets on every test, opportunities for EC, amazing TA. And material is rly interesting! I'm taking her again next sem for genetics!
Professor Kim is such a sweetheart, and the course is definitely designed for student success! Canvas is very well organized, multiple quiz attempts, extra credit, exam cheat sheets/curves, etc. It can take a little bit of time to understand how to utilize resources best and at times content is challenging, but you get out what effort you put in!!
Dr. Kim is a great professor who makes it very easy to succeed in her class. About half of your weighted final grade are free 100s (Has, participation in discussion sections, take at home quizzes, etc.). The lectures are bland and are fast paced so attend and takes notes. With a curve and cheat sheet, the class is a manageable hard worked for A.
Horrible slides with no info. Must come to class to learn content but explains things very poorly and way off the point. Leaves off info then tests you on it. Does this so you can come to class because she knows he always has bad attendance. Makes groups and seating charts and calls groups out in class because she knows she has bad attendance.
Dr. Kim is an amazing and kind professor! She always made students feel valued and seen. Genetics is a difficult class but she made it easier to do well. Weekly quizzes and HW, quizzes and midterms are open note. The lecture notes don't help for the exams- look back at quizzes & practice problem video or instapolls. Attendance is required/graded
Exams were hardish, just go over your notes. People's loudest complaint is for attendance.
Dr. Kim's lectures often got boring and were not that intriguing but she made up for this by making sure that students felt like they were participating and making her grading very lenient (an 81 could become a 90). Her tests were easy and came directly from the lectures and readings, also allowing cheatsheets.
While the exams can be tricky, this class is overall pretty manageable. Just stay on top of the lectures and quizzes, and utilize Unstuck ai and other study resources. The generous curve helps a lot too.
Dr. Kim is a good genetics prof. Her tests are online and open note, meaning they tend to lean on the harder side than other profs. The KEY to doing well on her exams is to thoroughly rewatch the lectures and write highly detailed notes. I did this and comfortably got an A despite bio not being my strong subject. She curves nicely. You can do it!
everyone on here claims she's “caring” but she refused to round up my 89.9……… her class is so boring and her tests are very difficult. thank god i never have to take this bs class again. she was so rude, thanks for ruining my christmas.
Dr. Kim has been my favorite professor since coming to UT. She is so nice and caring and honestly has been so thoughtful and insightful in class. Getting an A in this class is super easy if you just show up, pay attention, and take care of your stuff. Anyone else that says otherwise thought this was a blowoff class. The best genetics teacher at UT!
Good curve and interesting content, the teacher is very caring about students and tries to make the course not only about the content but also involves real world implications. Small class size makes it easier to talk to and reach out the the TA and the professor. I liked the content and an A is guaranteed if you go to class and pay attention.
Dr. Kim embodies the growth mindset. The course she runs allows you to mess up a lot, but as long as you show growth you can get an A. She genuinely cares about the students (she reopened quiz after deadline), and emails you when assignments are missing. She wants to see you succeed. Lots of drops and curves. Overall amazing, she learns names too.
Dr. Kim is such a kind person and very focused on the student experience/learning process. Her lectures can go fast, but she goes over any hard concepts repeatedly. She curves well too. GO to her office hours! She brings snacks and goes over any and all of your questions. However, there's a lot of homework/discussion sessions to stay on top of.
Dr. Kim was a wonderful teacher for BIO 315H. She was very generous with her grading style (71-79 = 80, 81-89=90) and really wanted her students to succeed. There was only one HW due per week and one quiz which was online. She is easy to talk to and very good at learning her students names. 10/10 recommend.
Dr. Kim cares for her students and how you do, she's very supportive and accessible! Dr. Kim can run through lectures pretty fast, so rewatching lectures and going to office hours will help. Discussion is helpful, curves are great, and there's tons of extra credit. Her TAs are amazing, shoutout to Aishwarya, Meghna and Crystal!
Professor Kim is the sweetest, kindest professor ever, and she does so much to help her students succeed. Her class is very well organized and lectures are engaging. Weekly homework assignments were very reasonable and helped with learning the material. Exams were difficult, but they were fair and matched the content from the lectures.
This professor is very straight forward and a very easy A. Amazing teacher, very chill. Just do the work she assigns and do the practice problems before the test and you fine.
Shes a great professor I appreciate her kindness and curve system very tolerance, you will learn in her class and she is a sweet person. Just that exam are somewhat challenging which is expected and I guess will help you more on the MCAT. Put in works and an A is the easiest thing ever.
I love Dr. Kim she's so chill and genuinely cares about her students. The exam is not the easiest thing in the world, probably the most challenging thing in this class, but all the contents are pulled from lectures and textbook! Put works in and you WILL success and get an A. She curves a whole lot and honestly it saves people's lives!
Easy A class take her or Engler if u ever push back genetic next year.
Sweetest lady but terrible lecturer. Reads off of slides and doesn't really seem to know what's going on but she's so nice and it's an easy A just be prepared to retain nothing.
I'm so so glad I took genetic with her along with Iverson literally the most manageable combo on earth! She hands out so much extra credits and really hopes you success, some people might get mad because how unfair the curve is when someone with a 71 can get an 80 but womp womp it is what it is Went to her office hours a few time she's so sweet.
Ignore the bad reviews in all seriousness. I was skeptical at first, but this turned out to be the easiest A lol! If you're a decent student who shows up and puts in effort, an A is absolutely within reach. She's fair, clear, and honestly one of the better professors I've had.
i love her shes like my mom. easy to get an A. she lets us have a cheat sheet on the exams that you can put anything on, good grade inflation and teaches well. very sweet, very caring would recommend
dr. kim is a great lecturer and her grading policies are amazing. even if you struggle with genetics it is definitely doable to get an A in this class. along with open note quizzes there are also 2 required projects for the class (one individual and one group project). dr. kim is so underrated, if you can take her for genetics do it!
I LOVE Dr. Kim, she made me enjoy genetics again after a traumatizing first semester of 315H with another professor. She is genuinely so sweet and wants her students to succeed. U get cheat sheets and a curve. She even once changed the due date on the weekly homework after a student requested it, she's truly kind. There's no easier genetics prof.
I don't even like genetics, but Dr. Kim is such a good professor. Her grading policies are designed to help you succeed, but you will still learn a lot from this course. She is a great lecturer, so go to class!! She is so helpful in and out of lectures, and you can see how much she genuinely cares about all her students.
Dr. Kim is a such a sweetie pie. She genuinely is so caring and wants her students to succeed. Go to class, keep up with the material, do the homework, and GO TO HER STUDENT HOURS AND DISCUSSION SECTIONS!! Genetics is hard but she gives you so many opportunities to succeed, you just have to take advantage of them!!
I love Dr. Kim! She's not the best lecturer (reads off slides), but SO caring and sweet! Very approachable and open to questions, and it's hard to get a bad grade if you try. Quizzes are take home & open note w/ multiple attempts and you get cheat sheet for tests! And her TA Anthony is the best! Have had them 2 semesters now and love them both!
Here to defend Dr. Kim with my entire soul, 315H/325H this year was so much more doable than I thought. Completion HW, take home quizzes, exam cheat sheets- she makes it so easy to succeed in this class if you put in effort! The material is difficult at times, yes, but what she asks of you on assignments/exams is very fair, and she is so sweet!
Amazing professor, don't believe anything bad said about her except that lectures are a little bit boring.
I love her don't play you got to pay attention in class and try you will be fine I promise. I believe those that gave bad reviews just did not try hard enough or they hate genetic.
if you can take her, DO IT. i love this woman she is so mother she is so awesome. genuinely so caring. genetics is hard in any class but she makes what you need to know so clear. midterms and quizzes are online open note. the way the grades are set up are to make you succeed
Dr. Kim is a very good professor and truly cares about her students' success. I don't see where the other people leaving negative reviews are coming from because she gives you every opportunity for success. If you simply pay attention to lectures and study lightly, you will most certainly get an A or whatever grade you're going for/
Took her for BIO315H. Although I never met up with her personally in OH, she was obviously very sweet. You can tell she cares about her students. Also, her TA's discussion sections were very helpful.
Kim is awesome, her lectures are good and she uses instapoll to make the class more engaging. She also grades on a curve so if you get a 81 she raises it to a 90 and so on. She is very focused on making the class understand genetics and not so much on getting an A which isnt too difficult.
Dr. Kim was a passionate and engaging lecturer, and she consistently made efforts to check in on students' mental health. Her grading policy was very fair and tests were take-home and online. The class wasn't too hard as long as you took notes on the lectures. Decent amount of work (HW, quizzes, discussions) per week, but it wasn't too difficult.
Dr. Kim is very caring and encourages students' with their learning. She has a good grading system and has many resources to help prepare students for her exams. She also opens up time slots for students to meet with her to go over exams.
Dr. Kim is a solid professor who truly cares about her students. While her lectures are not always the best (she somewhat reads off the slides) and Instapolls basically count as attendance, Dr. Kim makes it easy for every student to succeed in her class. She curves the exams heavily, quizzes have multiple attempts, and homework is completion.
Dr. Kim brings a lot of energy to lectures and canvas is very organized.
Overall, the class was very chill. Her lectures were kinda boring but she curved the tests. The hw and quizzes were very easy. I think as long as you some foundation from ap bio or whatever class you took you'll be fine.
Exams are very easy if you review the material and practice problems. Curves are generous. Prof. Kim is extremely genuine and accessible, but her lectures can be a bit boring at times. However, her office hours are very useful, and she will go through specific problems thoroughly. Also, she has snacks. Homework and short open-note quiz once a week.
Dr. Kim is very sweet! Attendance is mandatory, unfortunately. She's very fair and gives very easy tests and quizzes as well as weekly homework that is not hard at all to keep up with. A was very, very easy to get and maintain.
Dr Kim was a very kind woman but her tests were not fair. There were 9 multiple choice questions that were very different from what we've gone over in class. Her extra credit helps, but the curve can work against you. Do not take, so much effort into doing mid on tests.
I really love Dr Kim. She is very kind and genuinely wants to see all of her students succeed. Lots of office hours available - some of the content can be tough. Cheat sheets are allowed on the easy exams. Most grades were basically participation. Gave 4/5 only because she isn't a perfect lecturer, but the resources to learn the material are there.
I love Kim! She allows cheatsheets for her exams and retakes on quizzes. She is the one professor who knew my name, and you can genuinely tell that she cares for her students. Content can be a little tricky, but I did pretty well for having an absent AP Bio teacher in high school.
Dr. Kim is the kindest professor I've ever had at UT. She truly wants you to succeed. Her exams are challenging, but completely fair. Weekly quizzes + homework were manageable
Kim is genuinely amazing!! She makes 315h literally the easiest thing ever I cannot recommend her enough. Her exams are so straightforward and exactly like the practice problems. The nicest prof ever and gives extra credit for reflections on your growth.
Dr. Kim is the best professor I've had until now. Caring, kind, and understanding. Her exams were fair if not easy if you studied.
Kim is one of the best profs ever. She has a great teaching style, great class organization, and she really wants you to succeed. There's a generous curve on the exams as well.
easy to get an A. you can do instapolls at home. did not go to lectures and just made the cheat sheets for the exam (just copy the powerpoints on 5 pt font) and studied quizzes. a lot of drops and grace given. she is super sweet and class is barely any work.
I love Dr. Kim honestly the only professor I gotta spend some times to let people know how amazing she is. Shes literally so caring and understands her students' struggles. Her exams were super doable and not hard at all if you understand lecture and practice homework, instapoll. Take her if you can she's the kindest professor I've had.
she was an amazing prof who genuinely wants you to succeed. you have to teach yourself though as the lectures can get boring. s/o to TA jay for helping me understand the content! loads of extra credit, hw can be tedious, but it all adds up to helping you ace the exam. i bombed the final and still got a B-.
