How are you supposed to magically know what a prof's thinking?
one of the easiest classes i have ever taken at the university. She was respectful and gave easy exams and papers. Why does no one like her?
Because you must be mistaking her for someone else. You must regurgitate EXACTLY what she wants to hear (missing no details) to get a good grade. Watch out unless you like to work overtime for no extra pay.
Very clear expectations. Engaging material. If you read carefully and take good notes, her class will be no problem
No Comments
Worst Teacher by far! Absolutely unreal expectations. Unless it regurgitated word for word what she said...it's WRONG! No flexibility or openmindedness. Her way or FAIL! Once she has you labeled, she make you fit into her sterotype. Definately has favorties! When will she retire? I need this class..

horrible teacher, not good at all, if you can't read minds you won't do good, read everything and memorize and you might do good
Horrible Horrible condescending feminist! What a bag!
I swear, doesn't take anyone elses view point but her own. I work my rear off and barely pass. Unless you can reiterate her ideas and follow her beliefs you are outta luck. Everything and I repeat everything is about sex in literature with her. Weird :S
I liked her clas until I realized that she is completely self absorbed, and puts herself on a pedastal. This woman needs to come back down to earth. So what you wrote a book and have your Doctorate - deeming urself better than ur students makes u a very ugly human being. We are people too. Get a clu
horrible awful bag of a woman. made a subject i loved and was good at something i hate and am almost failing. even if you work your ass off she still hates you and your work. and why the hell is everything about sex? i doubt shes ever experienced it so why does she pretend to be an expert?
Morgentaler generally knows the historical context of any work like the back of her hand. She's knowledgeable, but expect to earn a grade that's at least a full letter grade below your average (if you're a B student, expect a C)
not a good teacher! it does not matter how hard you try you will do poorly! she doesnt tell you what your doing wrong or how to fix it just that your wrong! really dicouraged me in my major!
love her! fun inspiring classes, excellent enjoyable readings, pop quizes to ensure attendance, oy, who can complain?
No matter what you say in this class you are WRONG! Don't matter, you could have evidence coming out of every which way. But you will still be wrong, plus she is crazy with no contractions (they are the devil) Always write down with the defintions she puts on the board.
she seems to be unbending on her opinions about her literature. She also seems insecure about her position of authority and thus is very anal about menial details such as calling her "Prof. Morgentaler"
She isn't a great teacher but I loved all the material, and she promoted a lot of discussion. You've gotta KNOW definitions and don't take her too seriously. Be firm on your opinions and she'll respect you for it. If you don't contribute in class, she might call on you to say something but be prepared for her to infer that it's wrong.
All I can say is stay away!
Absolutely the worse professor I have ever had! Was extremely arrogant about her opinions and position as professor. Her class was a joke! No allowances for differing opinions from her's. Where was the openness about other views? Don't take any of her courses! She's a horrible teacher and writer; her book on Dickens is insufferable pedantry!!
Best prof at the U of L! Knows her stuff! Is kind and considerate and has a sense of humour. Tough marker, though.
Easy class. Make sure you do the readings before the class because she gives you pop quizzes. Know your definitions. She appreciates participation in class and is usually quite forgiving.
I took 1900 with her. Good prof. Knows everything you ask her and she's good at explaining. Really knows her stuff. There was lots of discussion in this class. Too many quizzes for my taste, but other wise good class.
I would not recommend this prof to my worst enemies. She is pompous and arrogant and thinks that her students are below her. It's difficult to like someone who dismisses every opinion that doesn't match her own, and who treats her class as if she's doing them a favor by stooping to their inferior level. Terrible.
I thought I was going to hate American Lit, but it was good. Readings were really interesting and prof was great. She's really helpful if you have a problem.
Smart teacher...just very smug with her opinions and not very flexible...very hard marker...she lets her own biases on both her students and her opinions on the writings get in the way...
She was very hard, knew alot, but was a very hard marker. Should have been a 4000 level course with her expectations.
Great prof, she knows her stuff, good explanation of the material, fair. I'd take another course with her.
If you don't know how to play the English game (i.e. re-wording her opinions in your own words) don't even bother. However, she's definitely passionate about what she teaches and really does know literature--American Lit had some really interesting readings. However, tests and grading were indeed quite difficult--not elective material.
Do not miss class, the stuff you do in class and essays are basically the course. Memorize all your terms!Morgentaler tends to disagree with people's opinions if it is not her own. She does however have some great class discussions, but is not a very nice teacher. Read project outlines and instructions thoroughly or you will lose marks!
She was somewhat brusque and rude with opinions and collecting work, and was not clear on what was to be studied, you basically had to rely on her gabbing the whole time, there were hardly any notes, mostly just words she wrote on the board-- no definitions, just the word. She looked the most animated when she danced to a Bob Dylan song one day
She is not a suitable prof for a first year class. Especially if its your first semester. Stay away from her!
What's the matter with everyone? She's a great prof. I'm taking my third course with her. If you like English, you'll learn more from her than from almost everyone else. But she's not easy and you have to work!
She's a very good teacher. She's demanding and you need to work hard, but the discussions in her class are very interesting. I learned a lot and would recommend her to serious students.
Her class discussions are awesome and she can be very helpful if you go see her outside of class time, however her classes are TOUGH. Expect a full letter grade lower than your usual. Her exams have a lot of ambiguous questions on them which makes it difficult to give her what she wants. I will avoid taking a class with her again at all costs!
I have mixed feelings about Morgentaler. Her discussions and material are great, but she's a tough marker and very inflexible. I don't really like her, but I have to take a 4000 level course with her next semester so I guess I have to deal.
Although she is a first rate professor and knows her stuff, she tends to be condescending to certain students. She assumes that only her interpretation of an author's work is right; suggesting that English is as objective as it is subjective. Her tests are ambiguous and her marking style is as rigid and authoritative as she is.
Do NOT take a class with her if you are not an English major. Although her classes were interesting, she clearly disliked some students in our class and shot down their opinions. She was openly rude and arrogant. It was okay for her to cancel class, but she expected students to attend without exception.
If you can read her mind, memorize every word of every poem, story and play for the exams, and enjoy not having an opinion of your own, then this professor is for you.
Goldie is an intelligent woman. This is a university people. It is suppose to be challenging, that is how i know my mark is earned. She knows her stuff. She is tough, but if you give examples and don't use "like" every other word then you will learn a lot and be better for it. As for the proper name thing? She EARNED it, it is called RESPECT! If yo
ridiculous testing. all based on memorization. Exact wording in a poem...not alot of productive learning. just memorization
I bet she is a nice lady when she is not in the classroom but I just want to say that I did not like being in the same classroom as her. Who does she think she is? God apparently. Well goodluck to all. If you can ace this class, you can get through anything. Just know what her opinion is before you state yours. I feared speaking. shot down!!
Course readings are extremely interesting and never boring. She was very passionate about english which was nice BUT this class is much too demanding to be a first year class.DO NOT take unless you can handle a ton of work and readings and are able to deal with a women that is the devil at marking and has terrible difficult tests and may hate you.
Dr. Morgentaler is a fantastic professor. She knows her stuff and if you work hard you'll do very well. Her class was interesting and thought provoking. She is a rare English prof who isn't scared to give an A+.
Morgentaler is one of the best proffs out there! She's a hard marker because she knows her stuff and she knows exactly how to teach it and what she wants the students to know. She's open and friendly and loves to hear peoples opinions in class, but expect to be able to back up whatever you say! She wants evidence you put thought into your work.
Morgentaler is passionate about what she teaches. Because of this, her lectures are the most interesting ones I've ever been to. You WILL learn new things in her class, you WILL work hard if you want a good grade, but you will also MOST LIKELY enjoy yourself extremely. Most of the textbooks are novels which are the best and most fun to read!
This is clearly a woman who would rather toot her own horn than inspire learning in the classroom. She has no concept of what it means to be a teacher. If you want to take a class that encourages independent thought and critical analysis you will likely find your time spent with Morgentaler both frustrating and fruitless. Her opinions and interpret
Her opinions and interpretations are as narrow and as rigid as her outdated view of education. As an educator myself I believe that all students are entitled to a classroom that promotes acceptance and one that allows students to develop their own voices, and for their teachers to learn from them in turn.
Goldie is the WORST Prof i have ever had in my life. If you have any desire to do well and enjoy University, avoid her at all costs. Her tests are way too long, she doesnt give nearly enough time and she has ridiculous expectations. If she doesnt like you, you grade is an F
Actually the worst professor I have ever had. How is it that I went from an A in english to a C-??? She doesn't give you any helpful advice- you'll go in to discuss an essay with her and then get a C. She likes to make students feel stupid in class. I don't normally write negative ratings, but this was terrible .
I love English. I have gotten at least a B+ in every class I have taken. I got an F in Goldie's class because it was uninteresting and base. She is discouraging because she laughs at her students. Tests are based on memorization of inane facts from the texts. Your grade is based on how much she likes you. She shouldn't be teaching. Waste of money.
She is a great person and has a loveable character. Then come the marks. Stinging from the first quiz to the final exam. Very strict in terms of answer content: no half marks. Knowledge-based class with little value on student interpretations. In short, if you have an aquired ability to regurgitate, this class is for you.
Horrendous. Absolutely Terrible. Talks down to you and laughs at you when your are wrong. Made me feel so horrible I dropped her class. Meaningless information on her tests. Boring readings. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I'm warning you, don't take her classes.
She is a very very very very hard marker. For example on a test if she asks for two examples of x and you give her two perfectly legitimate examples or x that she in fact said in her lectures she will still fail you if it isn't the exact two she had in her head at the time. She also gives 0 help or support when asked.
Prof. Morgentaler is a very, very, very difficult marker. She is so strict in class and attendance is highly mandatory. Her use of textbooks is also very compulsory. Despite the fact that she is a difficult marker, I encourage students to take her class because she teaches very well.
Morgentaler's classes are hard, the lectures are dry, and her approach to literature is draconian. She is a difficult marker, leaving discouraging "feedback" on assignments. She refuses to listen to contemporary theory and approaches, or alternate interpretations, regardless of textual evidence.
Terrible. Does not give constructive criticism, just criticizes work and does not state what should or can be fixed. Very condescending and does not provide help at all.
Often is condescending to students. I think she might dislike students. IF you dont have her opinion you are wrong. Her tests and quizzes are handwritten and they cover the most random but very detail oriented stuff from the text or something she said in a class. possibly one of the worst teachers i have ever had. How did she even get a job
Definitely the worst prof I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. Very rude, very closed minded, no room for student interpretation, VERY tough marker, a generally unpleasant person. I had high 80s in HS English and am currently in danger of failing the class. She also has a habit of laughing at incorrect answers from students. DO NOT TAKE!
She's not as intimidating as she seems. She's a fairly hard marker, and has no problem disagreeing with your opinion, but contrary to popular belief, she's really quite friendly and likes her students. That doesn't mean she's easy to get along with, or that you'll get a good grade, but she's opinionated and stubborn, not hateful.
Picked good content NOT helpful at all and a brutal grader if you are looking for constructive criticism look somewhere else.
She comes off as really strict and mean but she really isn't. She shows up to class to teach you. She isn't going to try and make you laugh, she's going to give you the information. Her midterms and finals are straight from lecture and she marks essays hard but not unfairly. One of the only profs to actually give me useful critiques on essays.
Goldie is a intelligent, insightful, and kind professor. She welcomes students interpretations of texts - as long as you can support your claims with textual evidence. She will push you to succeed. I highly recommend meeting with her prior to submitting an assignment to ensure you are on the right track. She gives excellent feedback.
Although I found her to be genuinely nice and easy to interact with, she has unrealistic expectations for her students - especially on test. She does not specify what she is looking for when writing test question. This left me answer the questions to my best knowledge but it was never what she "was looking for." I would avoid taking her.
She is the nicest lady! But also a crazy tough marker. She also has unrealistic expectations of her students, especially in 1900. She gives random quizzes at the start of class about the readings and the questions on them are far to specific. I hated her class and it killed my GPA
Openly insults you on your paper evaluations and does not offer ways to help you get better or give ideas on how to improve. Call this post millennial angst but it's a shame that she is allowed to teach this style.
Morgentaler has very high expectations and thinks very low of her students. Self-righteous and very old-school mindset. Finished HS with a 93 and got a 92 on the written portion of the high school diploma. Currently don't know my 1900 final mark yet, but averaging 60-65. Got a 60 on the last essay we wrote.
I do get along a little with this professor, I don't mind getting assignments to do, she gives it all more at the end of the semester. She does require you to back up your theories with evidence from the text, which is reasonable. However, the fact that we are not allowed to use any secondary sources, or else fail the assignments. Is a little rude.
Was very specific of what she wants in her answers, she is very nice to begin with but I found if you don't participate in class she really frowns upon you. She makes you show lots of evidence to build your opinion which is really good, but she is a very difficult grader. Lectures are also very heavy and must pay attention to small details!
No feedback on how to improve papers. I went to her for help on the final paper, she read it over in front of me, said it was very good and after some small grammar corrections (it was a rough copy) it would be a good paper... polished the paper and handed it in... failed the class.
I thought Dr. Morgentaler was a great professor. She is a hard marker and she does have a lot of quizzes but she is very fair in her marking and gives good feedback. You definitely will not be able to bs your way through her class. Her lectures are very interesting. Take specific notes because even the tiniest of details are on the midterm.
Dr. Morgentaler is awesome IF you try and get on board with her style of teaching. Read every piece of literature carefully and make notes of all details regarding the plot and the pop quizzes will not throw you TOO off-guard. She gets a bad rep for being too hard but frankly, if you try, Morgentaler will appreciate your effort.
Avoid her class if you want to make good grades.
Just not good
Most enjoyable class I have ever taken. Dr. Morgentaler expects you to have detailed knowledge of texts, but I have retained more information from her lectures than all of my others combined. She seems super interested in what she teaches, which made class discussions really engaging. I definitely recommend taking at least one of her classes.
Class is all discussion on readings that must be done before class. She has no problem if you sit and listen to the discussion. Marks very hard, but gives very good feedback. Quit revery class based on the readings that was suppose to be done before hand. Read the assigned reading and you will get a really high mark on the quizzes. Only 2 papers.
Although she gives harsh criticism when marking papers, it is somewhat constructive. Theres also the opportunity to go to her office hours if you would like clarification on the way she marked your paper. There are quizzes every class but If youve done the readings its fine. Dont let her harsh demeanour scare you, shes really not that bad.
If you don't interpret a story the exact same way she does you will be wrong and don't bother trying to make your case she will jump down your throat insisting you are wrong and she's right. She changes her own interpretation of the story from the day before and if you bring up what she said last class you will be wrong. Don't bother with her class
Honestly the hardest marker I've come across. Essentially no matter how good of a paper you hand in she will re-word the whole thing for no apparent reason. Also shes incredibly interested in empathy for students who have challenges and won't allow you to use ANY technology in class... she will call you out if she sees a computer or phone!
Very hard to share opposing opinions with, READ BEFORE CLASS, always has pop quizzes up her sleeve, so be on the ball at all times, and your hand should be killing you after taking two pages of notes on each poem...
Prof. has lots of info to offer, but she does not respect her students ideas. Be prepared for depressing/ offensive reading. Read everything BEFORE it pops up in the syllabus because quizzes are before class discussion. She wont tell you how many quizzes there will be. Math is not her friend for tallying. Take lots of notes. Won't answer ?s later.
she made some comments on my essay about how to improve the structure of the essay and I followed up with questions on how to improve because she made very vague comments and I got no answer, no support to her students who are seeking for help. If you are taking her class make sure to be prepared for any pop quizzes even from the start of the class
She gave unfair quizzes on the readings which were much too tricky to actually demonstrate understanding. Sharing an opinion in this class or answering a question is not seen as helpful, as she will tell you that you are wrong regardless of what you said. You can not win with this professor. Please do not take her class.
Goldie is one of the worst profs I have had. She is extremely unfair when it comes to testing both in terms of marking and giving enough time. She is very opinionated and makes students feel uncomfortable and dumb when they share a differing opinion. She does not reply to emails that question a comment or grade and offers no support to students.
This professor has been horrible. Unfair quizzes on details that don't reflect understanding. The class was given 45 minutes to answer a 40 question short answer midterm. Even with requests for more time we were ignored and met with rude remarks. DO NOT take any of her classes. She is rude to students and I dread attending her classes.
Dear future English students: avoid Dr. Morgentaler at ALL costs. I have taken two classes with her and she made me lose my passion for English. She is pretty hostile to people with learning disabilities and her exams are set up for you to fail. I am a diligent hard-working student and I struggled immensely. It is not worth it and it'll wreck GPAs.
I was so excited for this class, but Goldie treats her students awfully. She quizzes, tests, and marks incredibly unfairly, and creates a toxic classroom environment by shutting down opinions that are different than hers. If you want to keep your GPA, sanity, and passion for English, don't take her classes.
Absolutely terrible professor. Lectures were monotonous; she made no attempt to make the material interesting whatsoever. She does not allow the use of laptops or tablets to take notes, and worst of all, she tries to disallow students from leaving class, even to go to the bathroom, like we're in elementary school. Absolutely ridiculous.
JUST. AVOID.
