best self defence teacher in the country
Great Coach. Makes class fun! Sense of humor A+
I also took his table tennis class. Very good teacher, easy, fun, and very little classwork and homework. Highly recommended!
took him for table tennis...b+ but due to my lack of skills in ping pong...too dressy sometimes...hihi j/k...but yea i luv the class but not a sport person...good teacher changed me and had me enjoy sports more...take him for any sports!
Gives clear instructions and requirements for success in class
Sometimes his accent is hella heavy and you can't really understand what he's saying, but he's hella cool, he cracked me up a lot. He's a really nice professor.
He's easy, funny and made his requirements clear ... makes the class enjoyable ... recommended for badminton !!
Go to class and practice diligently. Even if you don't well, he'll give you an A for the hard work.
Took him for Self-Defense, as long as you show up for class you should be able to get B or above. Great teacher to work with, kinda heavy accent but he tries to be funny so at least you know you wont be falling asleep in class.
This is one funny man. Took his Beginning Bball class, which is really easy. Grades on determination and plays ball with the students. It's worth taking his class just to hear him say "Skills Test" and talk about Shaq and Kobe. Really easy f
Took him for self-defense. You've been warned. This is not a kick-back class; come prepared to actually do something. You do learn a lot of skills, although many of them are martial-arts based. Chen is a friendly guy, always willing to help you learn.
This guy is nice, funny, and he cares about ping pong. Yes he has an accent, but I think its charming. Just show up to class, have fun, do a simple skills test and written exam and get an A.
He is a teacher who teachers with compassion. I love his teaching style and makes you like the sport!
Missed the majority of the classes but still pulled off an A- by acing the final. He'll gladly help you if you ask for it; his clarity is not an issue. He also knows how to play badminton extremely well so that's a plus.
He really enjoys what he does and makes class fun. Learning self defense can be strenuous at times and you have to attend class often to learn new moves and practice. But he makes it worth while. He really cares about his students. Take SD with him!!
I like the the guy. Badmiton is hella hard but he makes it fun. If you think your good he kicks your ass and makes you feel like****, but in a good way
This man really knows what he is talking about. He is a really nice, calm, and understanding teacher. His makes the class fun and easy.
I thought at first that he hated my friend and I. But we ended up being the teacher's pet. Awesome instructor, but a bit boring though cuz the class was a beginning class.
Very good. i was intermediate player before and still am. But i did get much better and consistant but not advanced level. Good class lotta fun... Try to take with a friend.
Great professor. Fun to play with. Determined to teach and is very good at it too. Cool professor. One of my favorite since I got into college =)
Really good at teaching self-defense and other karate type of things. I learned a lot of skills from him. Awesome teacher!
Great teacher. Fun to learn with.
Easy course, but did not accept health reasons (with surgeon's note) as an excuse to postpone assignments. Those who know martial arts will do well, but anyone expecting simple defensive manuvers will be shocked. Group skits were fun.
Prof. Chen is a great guy. He has a good sense of humor and makes the class fun and challenging. You will learn a lot of very useful moves and get a great cardio on occassion.
He's a great teacher I've ever had for PE. I almost took all the classes he teaches all I have left is intermediate and advance badminton and his tai-chi class.
Easy, fun class. Final was hard because I didnt study but I still an A- overall. Very good teacher who cares about his students
If you're looking for an easy PE class, this is not it. Take his table tennis class instead. Trust me on this one.
very experienced, pretty easy teacher
Great professor! Teaches really well and connects with his students well too. Great sense of humor.
decent teacher. i took this class just for fun, i ended up improving my game a whole lot. very laid back, the final worried me a bit, but it didn't really affect anything. pretty humorous guy.
I got an A+ and learned a lot in his class! He teaches different ways of playing the game and explains what will be on the tests. He grades heavily on participation so if you show up and make an effort, you can easily earn an A!!
This class is pretty laid back. Each week we either learn something new or play a whole bunch of games. Overall it not a stressful class and high recommended. (its also nice to have friends in this class because its a bit awkward when you dont have a partner to play with on the first day of class... also he starts on the 1st day of class so wear PE stuff)
Very laid back, no retarded written tests every week like what ive heard of other professors, theres only one written exam and thats on the last day of class. Lets you play, and sets up a lot of tournaments..which is how you improve the most. Learned a lot and definitely had fun.
Easygoing guy who makes class fun. He really helps you improve your form and encourages you to try your best. Just show up every day & get on his good side. He cuts alot of slack during the skills test and grades you mostly on your effort. Highly recommended class.
He is a good badminton player. He is very clear with what strategies and skills that he wants you to work on. Work on your skills while warming up. It will help when you take the skills test near the end of the semester.
nice and helpful like everyone else said, but for me, he was hard to understand. just the pronounciation/accent factor was bothersome to me.
I cant say i actually learned too much self defense in self defense class. Attendance helps if you want to know all the moves perfectly, but more so if you want to fill out little 5 point papers. I didnt know the moves perfectly, but good enough. he's hard to understand, especially on tests because of his broken english. Nice guy tho.
Extremely fun class. I learned a lot! Even though I got sick a lot during the semester and ended up missing classes here and there, he was so understanding and helped me to get good grades. He told funny stories and I felt I really learned how to do Tai Chi. Very cool class. Should take it if you have the chance.
He's very nice, very knowledgeable about Tai Chi, very helpful, I really enjoyed the class. You do have to attend all the classes at the beginning or you won't learn the steps, and you need to do the steps well for the final; I only used the book on the tests; class is easy and Chen is super cool, I recommend; Tai Chi is very relaxing
great guy
Great class. Professor Chen is very nice and has humor. You don't use the book except for the final, which is based on a set of questions he gives before hand. I recommend just getting the book from the library, because it will save you money. Other than that, the class was pretty easy and fun!
very laidback! make sure to know the moves even if you miss class. plenty of time to practice. dont buy the book. cool class.
Enjoyable class and subject matter, but I rather preferred the two substitutes/helpers he had over the course of the semester. T'ai Chi isn't as easy as it looks, however, so don't go in thinking it will be a cakewalk...
I loved learning Tai Chi from Gong Chen. He is a little hard to understand but you just watch and learn. He is funny and even though there were many people in his class he knew most people's names. You also learn a lot about the Chinese Culture which is cool. My Favorite GE class by far.
GREAT TEACHER. MAKES CLASS EXTREMELY FUN AND EXCITING. looked forward to every class, learned a lot, and bonded really well with other classmates. The environment he creates is very welcoming to beginners. VERY nice guy, will let you make up missed work but don't push it! HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend.
Super fun and easy. I always looked forward to class and didnt think much of badminton. I love it now and never missed class, he is a great person and cares and jokes with the students. I would take him over again if I could!
Some college hockey players taught our class so it was very laid back. It was fun and my skating improved. But after the 1st 3 classes all we did was scrimmage which isn't very fun if a bunch of sjsu hockey players are taking this class for an easy A and they are far more skilled then you are (and they like to flaunt it).
He is the real deal. Hes a martial arts master, a real ninja. Tai chi wasnt super easy, but I would definitely take him again. You have to show up to learn the steps, its not a class you can miss. I heard that hes a really big deal, that he does a bunch of political work in China.
HILARIOUS!! Badminton has always been fun, but this guy made it super fun. He's kind of hard to understand at times because of his accent, but it makes it all the more funny. He doesnt like giving people that show up bad grades, so just attend class and be nice and you will for sure get an A.
FUN CLASS!!! I learned a lot about badminton's techniques and rules. He's a great professors who loves sports as well as his students.
nice, lenient, funny old man.
Extremely funny and helpful instructor! This class wasn't too stressful and very fun. (:
Prof. Chen is a nice guy who really cares about the safety of his students. Self defense is one of his favorite classes to teach and he makes it fun. The first month is very active; I had to take a shower after each class but then after that it gets really easy. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK(it's expensive and useless) Tests are a piece of cake. Good class.
Never actually meet the guy if you take ice hockey. It's run by coaches from Sharks Ice. Take this class and you will have a blast though. I love playing ice hockey and I can't resist an hour of free ice time. Easy A+.
Dr. Chen is very nice, though hard to understand at times. Be sure you attend his classes and you'll be just fine.
I took self defense and he was a really fun teacher. Has a heavy accent and tries to make the class as fun as possible. You have to go to class (only 50 min.) to get participation points which is basically your entire grade with the midterm and final. learn new skills every class. Definitely take his class!!
AWESOME CLASS, NO homework, or exams. All in class exercising and theory. Dr. Chen makes it fun and you walk away with valuable knowledge that might save your live one day.
One of the best KIN professors! Breaks down hard to grasp skills and engages class to interact with other students. A must take professor!
Very nice and funny teacher. His acent is very thick and hard to understand at times but you get used to it. He is always very helpful and encouraging. Definately take one of his kin classes
BEST KIN CLASS EVER. I have never ice skated before and though it was rough the first week or two it was the most fun I have ever had. It is taught by a sharks ice instructor and typically a SJSU hockey player. The exercises and games are fun. I'm a girl and truly enjoyed this class, give it a try!
Professor Gong is incredibly helpful in developing technique for his beginner's table tennis class. Even though I was probably at an intermediate level or higher, he helped to refine my playstyle and gave some great pointers. Take his class if you want need to get p.e. out of the way; you won't regret it.
The best teacher ever! He's extremely helpful! As long as you show up & try, he will love you! He was by far the nicest PE teacher I've ever had...and I've taken 6 PE classes already!
Easy class, cool instructor. Attendance is optional at the beginning of the semester, but GO TO CLASS. You'll fall behind if you don't learn the forms. Written tests are very easy, open-note and you can have electronics. Only one skill test that you can retake if you didn't do well. Don't buy the book, he posts pages online.
Took 2 of his classes! Very helpful and clear with teaching. Makes classes very engaging. It is an easy A if you show up and learn well. He will make sure you learn. Definitely take his class!
Excellent teacher for Beginning Table Tennis. Took his class in Winter 2016: 3 weeks, 2 hours per day. Got an A and had a lot of fun.
Super easy and fun class! Informative self-defense techniques! He makes PE enjoyable for someone who always struggles in PE like me! 1 midterm, 1 final (open book-pdf given to you by him), some skill tests which are fun. Just don't slack because you won't pass, majority of grade is from attendance. But definitely an easy A compare to other PE class
It's based on attendance, a skill test, midterm, and final. Gives study guide, and posts book on canvas. You have to work harder than your average ACT class, test are harder than they need to be but not ridiculous. TIP: DONT LIE ABOUT HOW MANY GAMES YOU PLAYED.
Quizzes/tests harder than others but still not horrible. Tip: DONT LIE ABOUT HOW MANY GAMES YOU PLAYED TO GET EXTRA POINTS.. trust me. Also, he'll freak out if you close a table the wrong way. Sort of hilarious. Fun class.
Best PE class @ SJSU. You learn extremely helpful self-defense techniques and have fun at the same time. Only minus is mandatory attendance, but he makes it fun enough where you want to show up to class. 1 easy midterm and final. He lectures in beginning of class (notes on canvas); can be dull, but it's only for 10 min. Chen has great personality
If you take Tai chi just know that you really have to put in an effort to get an A in the class. This is not a PE class where you can just slack off because you need to learn the forms which you are then tested on in the middle of the semester. There is a lot of memorization and his accent is sometimes not easy to understand. Overall nice guy
Dr. Chen is one of those professors you don't really forget. To be honest, I went into self defense expecting for just another boring PE class to just easily pass. At the end of it all, I learned so much and had such a good time. Fun class, 2 tests multiple choice, 2 skills test. He really does want to teach you to be safe and cares. Just show up.
The class wasn't too hard but participation and enthusiasm is encouraged heavily. He's funny and gives great lessons every day. I have yet to go into the class and be disappointed.
I was looking for a p.e. to help manage my stress, so i took tai chi. It brought stress. We're tested on skill forms and how well we memorize the forms from day 1 of class. I would not recommend it. Don't take it.
Dynamic self-defense instructor! I attended every class & I learned useful combat techniques every time. Exams were harder than it should be easier. Open book but some of the q's were painfully reworded when it wasn't necessary. I sometimes struggled to understand him b/c he mumbled occasionally. He used posters to teach. Pro tip: take a pic daily
only graded by a skill test, midterm, workout planner, no final. the skill test is the hardest part but its based on the movements you learn every class put into one motion. attendance isnt mandatory but he takes role and you need to know the movements for the skill test. Didnt know about the midterm and i only got 2 questions wrong, easy A
Chen was a fair professor. He was good at explaining the tai chi moves. However, he expected a lot over a short time. The midterm was a demonstration of a routine he had been building up with us. He made you work really hard for a good grade. However, he also would cut some slack if he saw you really make an effort.
Really fun self-defense class. Was usually always laughing and smiling every day. He helped out when we didn't understand what to do and was there for good feedback when needed. Participation is really important so go to every class, there are written exams but they don't seem to impact your grade very much if you attend class regularly.
I honestly felt bad for Prof Chen because our self defense class sucked as a whole. I noticed lots of absences and general laziness/disinterest from those who did bother to show up, which is sad because he tries really hard to be funny and motivating in every class. He cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches. Go to class!
Great teacher, engaging, motivating, and willing to help!
Fun self defense class, sometimes the games can be fun because it's an accumulation of the skills that you've learned. He can be picky about how you execute the techniques. He has a bit of an accent, just gotta really lean in and listen lol. Be sure to attend class or you'll have no idea what's going on the next day you go in
Graded on skill test for final, tai chi log, and written assignment. Good guy. Will give small lecture at the beginning of class and can be hard to hear sometimes. Helpful at explaining the tai chi moves and will redo the moves when class is struggling. Does expect you to pick it up kinda quick. Pretty easy class other than that.
First and last time I am taking a PE class in online mode. He is a great instructor, the moves he teaches are clear and precise. We just record our own for the final and do a weekly journal. Good class, wish I could of taken him in person
I liked his beginning badminton course. His class was just show up, play badminton, and have fun. His quizzes and skills tests were easy, and he gave you guidelines on how to get the full points. I'd take another class with him if given a chance. A nice person too.
Take this professor!! He is super fun and genuine. Like the other reviews say, there's a couple skill tests which can be tough but if you're actively engaging in class it can be a fun class. It's hard to hear him sometimes but he acts out everything which is nice. Fast paced; try your best to be there every class or you'll be a bit lost.
Attendance matter n graded, TaiChi forms taught ever class and will be tested for final. One multiple choice exam, can bring one sheet note. Half a page reflection due at the end of semester. Overall pretty easy class, TaiChi forms are posted on Canvas video form too.
Very easy class and a great professor. Just show up everyday, try, and you'll get an A.
You're mostly graded by attendance, participation in matches, everything is really easy as long as you go to class and try to play. The professor is very caring and would help you if you have questions. No need to read anything, 1 written exam, 1 skill test for the entire class. All are possible to score high by playing games, he gives study guide!
He treated me differently from the beginning, and I don't know why. But he was always harder on me compared to the other students. My main issue was how harshly he graded me because of this, I compared my scores with others, and for whatever reason I got the lowest score out of my friends. He's hard to hear when he lectures and his attitude is nasty
He's an alright guy but expects you to remember everything you've learned from day 1. You have to memorize 24 forms and be able to do it for the skill test. He goes through the forms very quickly and expects you to be able to pick things up quickly. I'm dyslexic and had a difficult time memorizing.
He is kind. Easy to work with. Go to class because it depends on it. He really does grade by participation. If you are trying your best at it, then that is what matters most.
This was the most fun class I have ever taken. You just get to learn ping pong techniques and play singles/doubles tournaments for the whole semester. My only complaint is that Gong Chen was hard to understand as he had a thick accent and was quiet. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you need to play a certain amount of games for your grade.
A really fun and engaging class to take! Learned several self defense techniques and moves. Best to take with a friend b/c the moves are preformed with a partner. Skills test can be tricky but if you practice and ask questions your fine. Attend class b/c he doesn't review what happened previously and it's graded participation.
My praise for this class is that it was the only class I looked forward to in my entire semester. Prof Chen has a very laid back format where you learn the basic skills, and then once you're settled, you get to do freeplay and just enjoy ping pong. Just show up, meet some people, and have fun playing, and it'll be an easy fun A.
Prof Chen was a delight. Very knowledgeable about self defense, he demonstrates all of the skills. He really cares about students. Participation matters as you learn new skills every class, and it helps to practice them so you remember them all. We had two skills tests and an easy final based on reading materials. So much fun, I'm glad I took him.
