Funny, Clear, Willing to Help, and really understanding. Interesting course.
*Bumping the comment on top* I still don't see the point of the lab component.

Henry Dong thinks Gordon Rocks!!
Mr Gordon is very kind!!!!!!!! and I definitely think he knows how to be hot !
Excellent teaching abilities. It shows he enjoys doing what he does.
NEVER available for students, poor leadership outside of class, Lab is a waste

gd EA knowledge, fair teaching, poor dealing/treating w/ diff. students
I really enjoyed the course. Gordon's lectures & tutorials were always entertaining and informative. I would recommend the course highly. I do however, agree that the lab component was a waste of time.
Well prepared and knowledgable, bit of a hard marker, and treats lectures like highschool.
One of the best and helpful prof I ever met. He is so nice. If I could I would like to follow him and do the research in the near future.
plays favorites with students, hard marker ... if students want to do a lot of work then take his course
Excellent lectures.....Is very prepared to entertain questions as well as assist stuedents in anyway he can. Prof Anderson is by far the top instructor I have seen this year at York Uni. Prof Anderson's lectures are always very intersting and educational.
Good overall instructor. The lab periods are nothing more than a waste of time. He plays favorites if you are socialable and any race other than white he will like you. *Very hard marker

Class is too much work!
plays favorites with his students ... does not hind the fact that he does ... if ur oriental you have an A+ waiting for u at your feet!
a very hard marker! definitely NOT a "bird" course. lots of reading, lots of writing... found that the prof expected everyone to know how to read chinese characters.. even white students
No Comments
Bit of a hard marker. Lots of reading. Attempts to make jokes. Labs were not very useful but need to attend. Seems to prefer Japanese culture over Chinese. Expects good command of English language. Take this if you think your English is up to par.
I thought he was the best professor in my my 1st year courses. His jokes were lame but u gotta give him kudos for trying. Also, there were a lot of reading but i think 'a lot of work' was an unfair label considering we technically only had 2 essays + tests.
What a bad experience , i expected professors to treat ALL students equally or at least not play favorites with his students ... like the post below - if you're oriental you DO have A+ waitign for you ... doesn't matter if you DON'T deserve it!
He is one of the best proff I have ever had,his lectures are very interesting, the tutorials are VERY informative and A LOT of FUN,he has a wealth of knowledge on the subject and is very helpful and approachable. He is NOT ****,he likes everyone!
He was one of the best professors that I had last year. His lectures were very clear with Powerpoint. He leads the tutorials too, and he was an amazing TA. He's very knowledgeable and fun. I learned a lot from him. I strongly recommend his course.

Good guy!!! Very helpful!! Fair marker!!! Loves people who go to class and visits his office. If you want to be one of his favourite students and obtain a good mark, talk to him and ask him for help.
Pfft this guy Does NOT like 'everyone'(hint) totally plays favorites with his students. Marking wise VERY bias, some may say he isn't, thats because, well lets just leave it at that! Glad i walked away w/a B+ and will NEVER have to deal w/him again!
He was the greatest professor. His jokes Are funny.yeah of course he is gonna like the students that try harder better!that doesn't mean he is just unfair and has favourites! he made it a point to know all his students + gave every1 a chance.he's great!!
He's a good teacher, the class is really interesting. A lot of reading...hmmm...oh well. He's funny. really strange how he remembers EVERYONE'S name...and he's a really big egg (white on the outside yellow on the inside)
i hate this guy

very very hard professor for a first year courses , students in their first year will not be ready for him
When i went into this class, i assumed he would be asian but hes not and that shocked me! but hes is very intellient and knows what he is teaching. I really kept up with everything in this course and i still got a C so I think he marks quite hard :s but he really cares about the students!
one of the hardest professor's ever, Way too hard for a Professor @ the first year level its gonna be hard for the freshmens
very very hard marker
This man is very intelligent and interesting. He is always willing to help if you ask, and he cares if you learn. I thought his lectures were interesting and eye opening. Yes, he is a hard marker, but if you TRY and put in your BEST effort you will not fail.
Professor Anderson is an amazing and intellegent man. Though he is a HARD marker success is possible if the student does what is required of themselves. He is challenging, cares about his students, and keeps you very interested in the material you are learning. Overall, if you get a chance to take one of his classes he won't let you down.
Very cool and funny professor! You'll love him and his class!!
he is a VERY nice, fun, cool professor! his classes are fun! i'd love to take more of his classes!
GREAT professor!!!! very approachable and easy to talk with! knows what he's teaching!
Excellent!
He was the BEST TA i have ever had. Makes class fun and extremely approachable
I have a great interest in Chinese culture. It's too bad he only briefly talked about "San guo" briefly for one lecture. PS game pics of Zhuge&Co. were great XD Read lots of books and he explained them all well in tutorial. Great in lectures and better in tutorial. The only Prof. I've encountered who's worthy to be called sensei/lao shi.
I loved his lame teacher jokes. hehehe. And he used to play the bass...extra brownie points for that!
A very intellegent and helpful professor!!!!
gordon anderson is amazing!
Let's just say he's very kind and fun to get along with.
Very intelligent and helpful. You will learn a lot from this man. Interesting and easy to understand lectures.
Very good professor. Fun and easy to approach if you don't understand anything. Doesn't matter what course he's teaching, he makes it fun. =)
He is an ****!!! He tries so hard to fit in with the students. This just makes me laugh because he is such an old bag, he wants to be young. He needs to change his attitude. He is an idiot!
He is an outstanding professor, who is always willing to help his students. He has a very dry but funny sense of humor, and his lectures are always insightful. Unlike the previous juvenile and negative comments, please keep your comments constructive if you were not happy with Gordon’s teaching.
what to say... he is the best professor available at york... an amazing guy...easy notes... very good techniques to wake ppl up during his early morning classes...after the end of every ppt slide, he sounds a huge gong, to wake up bored, sleepy ppl... keeps up with the popular culture, but studies ancient roots as well
Prof. Anderson was an excellent teacher for Huma 1400. He helps first years get used to the uni experience. He also has some excellent knowledge about his area of study. His tutorials are very interesting and you take away something at the end of the day. Overall, he is not a hard marker or a hard teacher at all.
He is a nice guy and knows A LOT about East Asian stuff, but the nature and organization of HUMA1400 was poor. Two essays and two exams made it really stressful not knowing what to expect. I did none of the readings except skimming before tests and I did fine.
nice, approachable & helpful. he was kinda wierd at times but usually great!
approachable, funny, creative and broad essay topics. he is laid back and easy going. best prof i have had this year :)
Mr. Anderson is very smart and helpful. He makes tutorials fun with his AMAZING sense of humour. Recommended. If you're interested in the subjects he can teach you a lot and offer good guidance.
WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD! horrible sense of humour! boring to listen to!
He's really funny and tries hard to make tutorials interesting. He is also very clear and easy to approach as well...even if he is weird at times XP
anderson is a very strange man. he sits and fans himself during lectures with his little chinese fan and he played some instrument for 20 mins and made everyone listen. he also likes to call out random students. really glad I don't have him as my ta!
helpful, easygoing, clear, fair.
I wish he was as funny as he thought he was.
He is nice and kinda funny...but his lecture is boring...didnt even make any notes cus most of what he lecture is by reading from the overhead. this course is extrememly hard to grasp. I have to depend heavily on the textbook. going to Tutorial doesn't help.
chilled out prof! approachable and nice! some of the material was personally tough to understand, but it won't show up on exam. he wants you to get an 'A', so exams are easy, but he wants you to learn A LOT about religion, because he's very passionate about it, so he'll teach you a lot of 'extra' material, worth it. everyone loved his tutorial!
Professor Anderson seems like an -alright- guy. He asks questions in order to engage the class but is very dismissive if you do not answer in the way that he hoped. He also expects you to have a foundation of knowledge (at least for East Asian culture) although there is no prerequisite for the course. Do your readings and you will survive.
Really nice guy, but he picks on people too much.
Seems like a nice man but does not always answer e-mails. The lectures are pretty interesting but having him as a TA as well is a bit overwhelming. Will orally quiz you at the beginning of tutorial on the lecture/readings so make sure you've been to lecture if you're going to his tutorial or he will call you out on it.Coursewasn'tforme, but forsome.
Really nice guy, but his knowledge of several of the religions studied was seriously lacking. Can't expect him to really teach you anything beyond textbook info. His marking may feel a tiny bit random sometimes. Still, I liked him.
Professor Anderson is a really nice guy. His marking is a bit confusing sometimes and he doesn't really give good feedback on essays, but having him as your tutorial leader will ensure that you understand the course concepts really well. Tutorials are really engaging and fun, but don't take his tutorial if you are too shy to speak in class!
I would not recommend taking Gordons class. He gives readings that arn't related to lecture or material, then he gives massive difficult readings and doesn't cover them in lecture and expects us to know them for the exam. Don't ever expect a pat on the back for a good answer. But you will hear about it obnoxiously when you are wrong.
VERY knowledgeable about the subjects of ancient China and Japan. Uses pretty useful PowerPoint slides, although you may have to take lots of notes. Given the course load and material, he is a tough but fair marker. Tends to forget about handing back papers and tests, so look out for that. Also, he has an arsenal of cheesy jokes
Nice professor, makes class fun. You can learn things from him without noticing it. For your information, he does reply emails on time, but he said his york email has problems receiving from gmail and hotmail, so use your york email to make sure it is not spam-filted. I would recommond this course, I learned a lot about pre-modern China and Japan.
Horrible tutorials. Makes you read 50 pages from the coursekit (which by the way, is probably the most expensive coursekit at york) then expects you to not only memorize every chinese word, but how to pronounce it with the "correct tone". I'm sorry, I didn't know I was signing up for Mandarin class. Shows clear favoritism towards asian students.
poor quality
Really boring lectures. 70% of class dropped out due to this. Material is made more boring than it already is.
Picks on random people during class, so dont wear anything that will make you distinguishable from the crowd if u dont like being called out. very vague and unclear. slides are disorganized, and doesnt leave more than 30 seconds for each slide
Unless you have prior knowledge about ancient China and Japan, please do not take this class Your GPA does not deserve this The assignments 4 assignments i think, are very difficult but the exams are fair and there are only two of them Picks on students. Not funny at all Waste of money and time
His assignments & exams were fair; 4 assignments & 2 exams. However, it is recommended that you pay attention to what he says & take notes in lecture (makes everything easy when it comes to assignment & studying for the exams). If you want a good mark, do not just focus on powerpoint slides.
Gordon is a wonderful professor with dry witticisms if you're not willing to do the work do not take his course it's a waste of his time and your parents money! Great classes, materials, and prof
Disliked the professor because his lack of enthusiasm, awful power point slides (also many irrelevant slides) and witty arrogance do not appeal to any student. The course material was scattered, unorganized but the TA was awesome.
A really dedicated Professor, and everyone loves his jokes. You have to work hard (just like in most other classes). He encourages creativity and participation.
He's rude and was a horrible prof
DO NOT TAKE HIM AS YOUR TUTORIAL LEADER PLEASE
VERY BAD
I actually really enjoyed huma1400 with him. Sometimes he's funny, sometimes he doesn't make complete sense, but when it comes down to explaining themes and concepts, he does a fantastic job making sure everyone understands. Honestly, you have to put in effort in the course to like it and to do well. He's a fair teacher who likes eager learners.
Nice guy but he expects you to work hard. If he picks on you that is a good thing IF YOU WORK HARD IN the class. If you are looking for easy credits in a throw away course he won't like you and you won't like his course. If you keep walking into lectures late he will notice. If you are trying for an A he will notice that too. Need to pay attention!
AMAZING CLASS. 1st half of the semester you will find a bit difficult* if *you are not familiar with east Asian stuff like CHINA. ENJOYED JAPAN THE 2ND HALF OF THE SEMESTER. Take this course, attend tutorial, the professor is very passionate about his teaching and he is funny. He is lenient about his grading and willing to help you in any way
at first Donald Burke was doing an amazing job covering interesting topics however, Anderson does not provide no review. All his slide are pictures and videos. Does not cover the importance of the topic. Bad experience within second semester. 1865 World of Relgion. The course is interesting but bad prof (Anderson)
Biggest issue: Lectures. 1. Slides do not contain enough info. 2. Notes have to be taken as he dictates so spelling is often off when learning about Eastern religions. 3. Lectures did not end at the expected time & often ran for an extra 1/2 hour! 4. Lectures are pointless as he dictates too fast & better notes are taken at home with the textbook.
Gordon is a gem. Terrible jokes. If he's your TA go to tutorial you won't regret it. Participate in lecture/tutorial and you'll do fine. Also, pay attention to grammar in your essays.
Things he spoke about in lecture had nothing do to with any of the required readings. He is passionate about what he is lecturing on, but he does not take it seriously enough. He once spent an entire two hours talking about his experience in Beijing. Did not post the lecture slides until a week before the mid year test. Would not want him again.
This class was very challenging and including a TON of reading, however, this professor really sold it for me. Professor Anderson cares about his students, and if he knows you're putting in the effort he will do his best to make things easier on you. He's a really good guy! I came to enjoy even the readings.
I didn't learn much from this course
The breakdowns are fair (4 Assignments, 2 tests) but be prepared to READ. He knows his stuff but the commentary is just unnecessary. If you get him for your tutorial as well then I wish you the best. You will be singled out during lectures. Best that you take this course if you already have knowledge on Chinese and Japanese culture/history.
Not enjoying this course AT ALL. Everything is just so vague and you have no idea what to know and not know. So much material all over the place, though I would agree he has the knowledge in what he is teaching! I really wish I can drop this course but I have come so far and can't. This is not your typical GPA booster stay away!! I regret it.
I had Prof Anderson as my TA for this course, and he was fun and if you are shy, he would make you talk. But it wasn't scary, my friends helped me out, but in all honesty, I would take this course again, he really helped me get out of my comfort zone.
Professor Anderson is honestly the worst prof ever. His slides only has pictures and a couple words, in which he does not explain, and if he does, it's super vague. He wastes your time by talking about irrelevant topics like his trip to Beijing. He over emphasizes the pronunciation of Chinese words, favourites/ only talks to those who are Chinese.
Prof. Anderson is a GREAT professor. He is passionate about East Asian culture. He always enlivens the classroom with a sense of humor. He also supports those students who would like to put effort into reading and writing. Some tips for a good mark: DO THE READING. Be creative in writing.
Dr. Anderson is the best prof I've had at York University. His course material is interesting and his teaching methods are engaging. He's also very accommodating and understanding. Definitely a memorable class with content I will take away from. Highly recommended.
The workload he assigned this semester was outrageous. Also he's a useless communicator. Doesn't give any info in his announcements, it's like pulling teeth to try and get any updates about assignments and exams. This professor may be brilliant and passionate, but he's a worthless teacher. Unbelievable workload. Never again.
Attendance is required, but i recommend participating especially in tutorials, as sometimes his lectures can be pretty vague and very detailed, so his tutorials help to discuss the material and to know what is important to know. His lecture style is discussion based, so it can be hard to know what to take notes on. VERY writing & reading intense.
Gordon Anderson is the worst prof at York. He doesn't communicate with students at all, takes forever to post grades and doesn't give any feedback whatsoever on assignments. He has extremely high expectations for students but holds himself to a very low standard. I will never take another class with this prof. Lesson learned.
Most confusing class. Randomly starts speaking Chinese or Japanese. . If you don't know any of those languages and you don't know anything about Chinese or Japanese culture and history already do not take this class. Since its a first year course I thought it would be a bit basic. No, its not. The amount of reading given is insane in online class.
Professor Anderson is very passionate about the material which makes lectures and tutorials very interesting. HUMA 1400 is taught in a very different way than most history classes but is much more fun once you get used to it. There's a heavy focus on literature, readings can be up to 60 pages a week so only take this course if you can handle that.
This professor is hilarious and has no sense of reading materials. The reading materials are a lot; every week, there are two articles with 30-40 pages and novels to read. The tests are no sense too, and everything was not from the course we've learned, except multiple-choice questions. The TA is also the worst grader. Her name is Stephanie.
so bad
BEST PROF EVER!
He was fine. Definitely dedicated to the subject but the readings were a lotttt. Easy to fall behind.
I really enjoyed this course! Prof is a funny guy. It's easy to get a B as long as you advocate time to read.
Very knowledgeable professor. Truly inspiring and highly recommended for an exceptional learning experience.
Excellent Professor who takes care of teaching. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot. The best course I took at York.
Amazing!
It takes forever to get our grades. Choosing him as my tutorial leader was also my worst decision. I wanted to see my mark for Assignment 1 to rectify my errors in the second assignment. The second assignment is due in a week, yet we still haven't received the mark for the first one. He should be considering retirement.
he waited until the very end of the semester before giving us any assignments. the class isn't even about chinese culture, it's about shaming people for being young. he literally disagreed with someone who said stereotyping was bad.
