good lecture pace
Good lecturer, but is not so welcoming to questions
easy? ur kidding me??
not "easy", but fair; good lecturer; not too receptive to Q's when one on one
booya bates, you rock!
Good lecturer, HORRIBLE IN HELPING STUDENTS
Hard marker and difficult tests but interesting lecturer
ok notes...not very friendly
notes really good, but very very hard exams
made me cry once!
not a nice person, made a lot of people cry
Hard course. Makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions
doesnt answer questions straightforwardly with one on one help
****ED UP CURRICULUM.. TEACHES **** THAT WILL NOT HELP YOU AT ALL FOR ANY EXAMS
very nice...clear and helpful...hard tests though
Professional feel to lectures. Knowledgeable. Course is generally a killer.
condescending, no respect for students
knows his stuff well, but too arrogant to explain it straight
Has no patience for students and won't give you the time of day. SOB!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lectures that put you to sleep... killer exams.

Not a bad guy, really boring but that's the price you pay for clarity. Exams are waaaay harder than in-class stuff.
great teacher. Clear and very knowlegeable. Sometimes kinda funny. For a tough course like organic chem, he is your best bet to a good mark or just to pass. register in his section!! :)
Boring lectures. It seemed like he was reading straight from the textbook! And "thinking exams" according to him.
aahh! Dr. Bates was the most unhelpful prof I've ever had. His grading system made no sense and he only got about 30% of the way through the course.
didn't like him. the class average on the midterm was around 30% or something, and he yelled at us saying that it is obvious that noone studied at all for the test. he told us we all needed to "grow up." i think he expects everyone to be a chem
His lectures put you to sleep, if you can stay awake they're very informative, but good luck staying awake!!!
Compared to the other organic chemistry profs, this guy is awesome. Compared to profs as a whole, he is mediocre.
pretentious and unapproachable, very knowledgable about the course itself but unable to answer questions that stray beyond the ridiculously strict guidelines he has set out. very big-headed
very clear lecture a bit hard on the exam. just do the practices and u will be fine
The lectures were clear and somewhat interesting, but did not remotely help to prepare us for homework or exams. The instructor was rude to students.

His lectures are boring...but crystal clear. They clarify every single bit of knowledge. As long as you finish the assigned readings on time, you'll do fine.
very clear, straight-forward lectures. gets to the point when you ask a question. gordon is always helpful. no tricks on exams. lectures are just boring.
Zzzzzzz.....er...well he tries to be funny...but...um...yeah...pretty clear lectures tho...too bad I wasn't awake to listen to it...
The boringest prof ever. I sleep every lecture.
the lectures can get a little dry, but at least he tries and he really knows what he's talking about. he personifies everything, and he's really approachable one-on-one because he seems so laid back.
he was boring, but he explains the concepts very well. he made the organic chem courses afterwards seem WAY easier!
Extremely Unhelpful. Don't bother asking questions cuz you won't get any answers.

He's very good at explaining concepts and ideas. However, he doesn't usually answer questions very effectively and the midterm (I don't know if he wrote it) was horrendous.
i think he gets off on failing more than half of the class.
the WORST professor i have ever had. arrogant, rude, impatient. when you ask him to clarify something, he reminds you that he said it in the lecture (gee thanks!!!) and then repeats what he said...word for word. i went to see him after my horrible midterm mark (18%)...i was SOBBING. he threw a box of kleenex my way and continued to read!!!
horrible he's not a good prof at all should have gone to jackie's class i dont think even wants his students to do well out of all the profs he's the only one w.out office hrs and when u go ask him questions he doesnt give u good explanations
Decent at explaining but arrogant and wont help much with any question; just remember, the difficulty isn't just due to him, though him being course director does make it harder, but also the hardness of chem 233 itself; it is a QUANTUM leap above any chem you do in first year. Take it with Jackie Stewart.
Thought he was a good prof at the beginning but realized too late that he was not. He tries but I just don’t think he uses a good teaching method. Digresses a lot to random topics to show off how smart he is, would be fine if the class average wasn’t 47% after the first midterm, we need all of class time to learn.
Monotone, but funny. Clearly explains most things, and his class actually had the HIGHEST average on the midterm this year (it was a common midterm). He teaches concepts and expects you to work out the details, which is good, since the tests are very concept heavy and expect you to start with the concepts and figure out the details from there.
Lectures are pretty good and clear, IMO, but he's not very approachable/somewhat intimidating. Teaching Chem 233 just adds insult to injury.
Very good prof, thurough and to the point. Arrogant, yes. But at least he explains the material so that everyone understands it right away! His notes are very organized and easy to follow. Mediocre/poor personality, Fantastic teacher.
He's an average prof; nothing that makes him great, nothing makes him very bad.
Good teacher and explains topics clearly, however he is not very helpful outside of class and does not care about his students.
He explains all the concepts really well but in a very boring voice. But Dr.Bates just teaches the concepts and expects us to apply them ourselves. I wished that he could have given us more help in preparing for the exams. He didn't seem to care about helping his students prep, he simply just taught the material and left the rest for us to do.
Clear and concise and very organized notes. He's boring although sometimes he tells interesting info on the side and tries to shake it up with some anecdotes. Overall he's ok, not great but by no means bad at teaching. The course however is still super hard.
Better than MC but........, he will also not post who is teaching which chem section for first years as he knows that some of instructors will not get any students at all...hahha.
Looks intimidating but is actually a nice guy. His jokes are just so not funny and that's what makes him funny. This prof has the funniest hand gestures that you'll ever see and he personifies everything which makes you feel like that he's talking to a group of children.
I did bad in this class...and I can totally admit that it had nothing to do with this guy. The course is hard but he does his best to cover everything and to be as clear as possible. If you have to take this course then just be prepared to work hard and this is a good guy to have around while you're doing it.
i dont like da way he teaches, his style of writing of writing notes on da board because i cant pay attention to wut hes explaining. this prof is completely unhelpful, if u ask him a ques he said in class he'll jus say he already mentioned it in class. failed bad first time did super with da best prof teachin chem
i actually like the way this prof teaches. theres something about the lack of technology and reverting back to the old chalkboard ways that push me to pay attention and not just doze off with the mentaility that 'i can just print the notes from online' or 'i can skip class today and get the notes later'. he seems pretty intimidating a person though
Awesome prof. Notes are very good, uses chalkboard, very clear. He can show mechanisms with his hands! There is reason why he has recieved teaching awards in the past. He keeps the class quiet which is very good. I'm in third year now, and he's definately one of the best profs ive had so far. Next to Gateman.
Never taught me anything
Organic Chem is a difficult subject. I thought he made the examples clear and when questions are asked during class he answers willingly. I consider him to be a good prof and obviously extra work on behalf of the students is needed to make the best out of it.
He is an absolute horror. He doesn't know how to teach and tries to find ways to make people fail. He also books people 10 minutes after you during his office hours so you won't ask questions more than 10 minutes. His exams are killer and he doesn't go over any practice questions in class like other organic chem proffs. He is also ****.AVOID AVOI
AVOID at all costs.......it's not his notes that are bad...he teaches you the mechanisms and whatever.....but he WILL NOT help you get a good mark.....actually forget that....he WILL NOT help you PASS the course. His section's average was 56% this year compared to Jackie's which was over 60%.
Dr. Bates is THE WORST PROF. i have ever taken in my life. He is unhelpful, disrespectful and worthless. Avoid him at all cost.
ehhh not bad but not great... teaches u the stuff but ur pretty much on ur own to really master it. 9am is too early just sleep in and read the textbook instead
sucks big time he is just not good enough in relative comparison to other proffs
Dr. Bates is a good teacher. He does make you figure some things out on your own, but is that a bad thing? His explanations are very simple and easy to understand, and he goes through material at a slow pace. He has some entertaining stories, too.
I had him in 1st year and he was really helpful, but then he took on 2nd year chem and became an advisor and he became probably the most heartless **** in the program. Good lecturer, emphasis on theory over memorie. Known to throw compleletly weird/strange questions just to test your understanding of theory. Hard exams, class, and no empathy.
chem 233 isnt the easiest class to take, but taking it with bates is pretty much suicide. Especially if you take it at 8:00 in the morning. He's boring, and doesnt mark fairly. My friend and I did the problem sets together, however our marks come out different.

I agree with most of the comments. In short: Classes are good but don't prepare you for squat, exams seemed like they were for another course, owl/assigned question don't prepare you for the exams, I question his educational integrity overall. Just go to Jackie Stewart's class -even if you are not in it-, screw this guy.
I feel like I know a lot about organic chemistry after attending his classes. Too bad it didn't transfer to getting a good mark since the exam has absolutely no relevance to the material presented in class. I was unlucky. I wish I had Jackie Stewart.
insanely difficult course and bates doesnt help at all. his little stories during class would help more towards a history course than a chemistry course. gives questions on exams that come straight out of the blue....like literally completely random. if i hadnt read several other textbooks aside from the assigned book, i would have failed.
The exams might as well have been written in Martian. He does not post up answers to the midterms, so the majority of the class is left wondering what the correct answers were. The reasoning: He wants to encourage more discussion. Please. Do you see other professorss doing that? Just give us the darn answers.
Complete Jackass! In 99% of courses I believe that the mark you get is the mark you deserve. NOT WITH HIM. People worked their asses off in this class and were not rewarded the in the least. He has no sympathy for his students and his exams are soo random. He rambles about history, its a chem class. Booo
Worst prof ever. raped our whole class without any sympathy. Does not post answers to midterms. Does not go over them either. Does not know how to teach. Questions on exams are extremely random. Dake is far superior than him.
speachless
absolute horror! stay away.
Be afraid, be very afraid.
OMFG. PLEASE get him off the teaching staff list...Talked about nothing aside from irrelevent stories (YES STORIES). he only teaches step A=basic concept, but wants you to go to Z. SO YEAH. i got good grades from it simply because i studied form the textbook and ignored most of his BS (THOUGH some of it was extremely useful..some concepts)
Not a horrible prof, but not very exciting. He tried to go too fast and it got a little confusing when he tried to teach us nucleophilic acyl substitution in first year before we even got the basics down.
Rambling, confusing, bizarrely misogynistic at times. I am usually actively engaged in lectures but paying attention here was a struggle. Assigned multiple assignments and changed deadlines without directly informing the class. Worst prof I have had this year.
NEVER. AGAIN. No textbook for the ochem section, just a workbook, so good luck. Goes too quickly through the slides and spends way too much time telling stories. RUN.
If you get him, drop out immediately!! one of my worst experiences with chem, if it wasn't for the workbook written by Glenn Sammis then I would have been soooo lost!!! bad prof....
Nice guy, but not a good prof.
Weak lecturer. Sounds tired and seems to put more effort into talking about his bike trip across Europe than he does with the course content. Thank god for the slides and a half-decent Organic Chem workbook. If that was as poorly written as the physical section, I would be toast.
I am currently in his CHEM123 course and they had to send out an e-mail telling students from his classes to stop going to other chem classes to learn. He expect you to learn all the content out of class then go over a couple of questions in class and when there's a quiz it's almost a completely different format then what you were learning.
Gordon Bates- please avoid this prof if you can. Only 15 of the class showed up to his lectures, and for a good reason. His voice is extremely monotonous and many times he didn't use his microphone. His lectures were very dull and he expected you to know material by pre-reading before it was taught.
A hardworking professor that adapts his classes to his students weaknesses and learning styles. Takes everyone's feedback into account and uses this to prepare all his lectures, tailored to his students needs. A pity that a lot of people didn't give the class a go for long, before not attending at all.
Worst prof I've ever had. When lecturing, he tended to even confuse himself about what he was talking about. Often went off on tangents talking about his personal life, and didn't cover a lot of material (I needed to self-teach). By the end of the course only 20% of the class actually showed up his lectures.
would not help me pass, I was one mark away from passing, took the course again with another prof got an A. this guy is pathetic
