Very cool guy-
Clever. Keep a spare smoke for him in your pocket. He'll need it.
puts in minimal effort, doesn't really seem to want to be there
Amazing guy, genuinely a nice person and a very smart man. I am lucky to have been in his class.
A very interesting professor with a wealth of knowledge about his subject. He made me want to stay in History.
are you talking about the same professor that i had? cuz i can't say i learned a thing from him...not one thing, most useless course of my life
Although I found the course difficult, the professor was enthusiastic and generated interesting discussions. I would rate it one of the better courses I took at Queen's.
I took his class a couple of years ago. The material was not interesting, but he was a really good teacher. I was disappointed I never had him again.
How could anyone not like this guy? He was an awesome prof. I agree with the other person, I wish I had more courses with him.
The ABSOLUTE worst professor I experienced at Queen's. He could not string a coherent sentence together if he tried (which he did not). The dwindling numbers in the seminar reflect his disinterest, and lack of effort. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
All of us at the Toucan think he's a spectacular prof. Articulate, organised, insightful. A pleasure to work with.
Great correspondance prof, always emailing to help students improve the quality of their work. Understanding of extenuating circumstances.
he is a nice man, yes, but that does not a good professor make. he is unorganised, can't string together more than one thought per class, and let's be honest, he does little to no preparation before class - but then again how can one prepare for sitting in silence for three hours?! worst prof!
C'mon! I learned more in this class than in any other I took at Queens. Could be he had a bad year, I don't know. But the guy has more than decency on his side - he's a mensh and knows what he's talking about. Maybe someone didn't do their homework.
Although I am not really interested in this area of history, I did like the professor. This class is more what I expected from University, where we get a chance to think and discuss. Too many professors like to drone on just to listen to their own voices. This class was not like that at all.
good class. good prof.
He is a very nice guy who seems to know a lot about the topic. However, he does not prepare for class or try to impart any of his knowledge to his students. The class is easy but if you want to learn anything I suggest you look at other courses.
This guy is so chill. Walks into class with his headphones on rocking out to his music. Very nice man who knows a lot about the subject. However, like some of the other comments, the seminars lack organization, and you really do not learn a whole lot. All in all though, it was a fun year in 327.
Great guy. Very relaxed. Seems a bit dissorganized but is fair nonetheless and is very approachable.

History of the Holocaust... did an amazing job teaching this subject. This class was very interesting and is obviously something close to his heart as you could tell how involved he was in the topic and how much it affects him.
Yes, he does care about the topic. But half the time his sentences fade off into nothingness. He arrives late to class EVERY DAY. It is clear that while some days he has prepared a lecture, other days he just wings it. And you'd think he could tuck his shirt in once in three months.
stay away!
STAY AWWAY, unless you like absentmindedness and essay outlines three days before the essay was due
should speak up a little more and be more prepared for lectures, but is incredibly knowledgeable and obviously cares deeply about his subject
Terrible, terrible lecturer. No organization whatsoever. Stay away.
Unorganized, always late and used the class to promote his own agenda
I find him very down to earth and easy to understand. I've never taken history before and he really puts the pieces together in an intersting and interactive way!
Gord rocked my world
If you already know the material and want a really easy class than this is the one for you. Be warned though, the prof. is a complete idiot. Never on-time, all material for lectures comes from the textbook, boring as all hell, extremely unprepared for exams, some comments in class were borderline offensive. Ass kissers adore him, and he them.
He was my seminar proff. He was a creative and interesting teacher when he decided to teach. Unfortunately, I have to agree with people that he can get off topic and be unprepared a lot. I met with him to discuss my essay and he was very helpful. He was a nice guy, but be prepared for his inconsistency.
Watched movies the entire time. Barely any discussion. Exams were hard and required memorization of the textbooks. Very intelligent, but completely unorganized, completely screwed us students by giving us unexpected essays and hard exams, specially since he didnt teach us anything.
best professor I have had at Queen's .. hands down
Awesome teacher, awesome class.
Dueck is very passionate about both his class and the subject itself. He gave us very creative and useful assignments. Above all, a properly awesome, very cool guy; (no seriously, I would see him at the pub, and he would invite me over to his table-- he's that cool).
Very interesting lecturer, interesting topic - one of my favourite courses i've taken at Queen's (and I am a fourth year student)
ASTOUNDING PROF! Students are locked onto him during his lectures. He just talks but if you listen you will get it. He is the best prof at Queens. Yes, he just talks about chapters you can read, but lectures can add so much. Tests and assignments are not too bad
This teacher lives and breathes his subject matter and thrives on the connections he cultivates with his material and his students.
Great prof. His lectures are always interesting and you can see his passion for the subject. The assignment wer fair and the mid-term was fairly easy if you did the readings.
Dueck is a fantastic teacher. As long as you aren't a total failure and listen in his discussions you will take a LOT away from his courses. He knows so much about his field that it is scary at times, but he always has a great story to tie into his lectures. His exams can be a little scary if you don't do your readings, but this is UNIVERSITY kids.
Great prof, always interesting in lectures. Easily the best prof I've had aat Queen's, made me want to be a history major.
Love the class and the prof! He's very passionate about the subject and teaches things that aren't always in the text books. Really interesting!
Wonderful educator! Enjoyed every aspect of his course. 2 key things: really good readings (primary sources I found fascinating) and excellent guest speakers.
Gord is an amazing professor. Gord's style is to make you think and to inspire you to learn the subject on your own. Anyone complaining about disorganized classes is probably because they like their education to be spoon-fed to them. Sorry, not the way it works in the real world. Great prof. Highly recommend.
Clearly someone who is passionate about his field, but not about teaching it. Assignments are just plain ridiculous, and lectures are usually pointless to attend; the course IS the textbooks. Desperately needs more organization, and more focus. He seems like he could be a fantastic Prof if he could actually seem to care about teaching
Interesting professor when on task. Often goes on tangents about irrelevant matters. The course is a lot of work but it's not too hard to do well if you try. Readings are beneficial. Gord made this past year (2013) class a lot harder than previous years with more work and a final exam. The exam was relatively fair.
Do not even bother attending lecture. Read textbook and complete assignments but don't waste your time by attending Gord's rambling rants.
Gord is a great professor. Very passionate about the subject and very very well informed. He is great to talk to outside of lecture. Sarcastic and amazing. You rock, Gord!
Gord is a bit unorthodox. He wants the assignments and papers to be an more organic process (not strict on how you write). Therefore usually gives minimal direction which can be hard for writing papers. Little bit unorganized, but his humour and rants make it worth your time. If you don't want to read the text make sure to got to his lectures.
Dueck may be different than most professors in his usually laid back nature, but he's the perfect type of person for what he teaches. He's also very understanding and doesn't make irrational decisions that will be detrimental to your grade - he wants the best for you, and he'll help you get there however you prefer if you ask for help.
The whole course is in the readings. Don't bother going to the lectures unless you're into the whole dry-humored-zero-schts-given-but-actually-kinda-sweet character that is Dueck. The readings are great, but he doesn't like to teach. The 7 day grace period for each assignment was a blessing (he gets us).
The BEST teacher in my undergraduate career!
Fascinating course, but the lectures are unnecessary. The entire course consisted of 2 essays and a final, which was only multiple choice questions. The essays are basically up to you, if you make a strong argument and present it clearly, he should like it. Funny guy, but doesn't come off as the most approachable. Took attendance at random once.
Such an amazing prof
Dueck's class was one I looked forward too. Textbook provides information, lectures provide understanding of significance of the Holocaust. Very interesting but not something everyone may be used to. Very interesting guy, albeit sometimes a bit disorganized. Would still recommend the class as it really affected my perspective!
Such a good prof. One of the best at Queen's for sure. Engaging and entertaining discussions. You could tell he truly cared about his students and wanted us to succeed. Assignments were thought provoking and relevant and the novels/memoirs and other readings were extremely interesting and well chosen. Highly recommend this prof and seminar!
Fantastic lecturer. I loved going to his class.
Dueck is by far the worst professor I have encountered at Queen's. He showed more documentaries in HIST295 than actual "lectures" those were a series of unintelligible names/terms scribbled on a chalkboard or rants about unrelated topics. If this is your style, great! Otherwise, Dueck is a prof to avoid if you want to actually learn something.
Really bad. Rants with little content, shows documentaries every lecture, and expects you to master every detail of a textbook without mentioning it once in lecture.
super disorganized and barely taught content that was relevant for assignments or the final, so going to lecture was always a waste of time...u just need the textbook. The assignment instructions were SO vague which makes it pretty difficult for people who need more structure. Hard to care about the course when ur prof doesn't seem to
Very knowledgeable on the subject he teaches, but he is inaccessible to his students. Doesn't answer emails with questions about assignments and didn't return grades for our final papers, leaving me mystified about how my final grade was calculated. Leaves his TA's in a difficult position when they don't know the answer but he ignores you.
He may be quite possibly the least qualified professor at Queens. While I felt the course would be interesting, the result could not be farther from the truth. He gives no instructions as to what to actually write for papers and grading is inconsistent at best and flat out unfair at worst. I heavily recommend you do not take this course
My man would show up looking and sounding like he had the worst night of his life and the result was being extremely unprepared for class and would not give any outline for the essays until the last possible minute. The content isn't that hard, its just he didn't take to time to organize it or care about it enough to teach it properly.
I definitely regret taking this class. I would recommend literally any other history class in the department. When he wasnt struggling to operate the AV equipment he was lecturing on obscure topics that weren't relevant/tested on or we wasted time in group discussions. Truly disappointing, I was very interested in the Holocaust before taking this.
Lectures didn't teach anything we were tested on. The exam tested small details that would require memorization of the whole textbook. No feedback on marked assignments. He gave me an F even though he hadn't graded 2 assignments (the semester was long over). I was unable to get ahold of him about it after. It was changed but I would avoid his class
This Prof is entertaining and makes lectures fun and engaging (I wasn't bored once) however, he seemed to be all over the place and pull out random facts from his memory so lectures could be hard to follow. Also showed constant documentaries in class and just spoke over them and have minimal feedback. But his character and enthusiasm is great!
Overall, I liked prof Dueck. Cons: He was unorganized at times, wasn't very clear on grading criteria or specific guidelines for assignments and tended to get off topic during lectures. Pros: He cares a lot, I found him very funny and did overall enjoy the class and content I learned. He always made himself available outside of class for help too.
Professor Dueck is extremely unorganized. Lectures often consisted of whatever YouTube videos were in his recommended page that day. He was inconsistent about what he expected in assignments which often meant that TAs did not reflect the guidelines he gave in class in their marking. Strongly advise against him and this course.
I actually love his teaching style, but maybe because I am a little unorganized myself and really agree with him politically. His insight on topical issues in relation to the holocaust was great, and the documentaries he showed fit well into the readings and course material. He gives far-away deadlines and always gives students extra time!
Sometimes, Professor Dueck is unfairly portrayed. Often, those who do not do well in his class are those who did not understand that each lecture was built off of the previous one. Every lecture was one piece of an even greater lecture and message - a message which requires a great deal of time and effort to convey. Pay attention to succeed.
Prof. Dueck is honestly a great prof. While he is a bit disorganized with his lectures and loves his documentaries, you can see his passion for what he teaches. His tangents are hilarious, and his email communications are even better. He gives us plenty of notice on assignments and a long grace period. Prioritize being direct with words for work.
Professor Dueck is my fav prof at Queens! He can be a little chaotic at times, but he knows his information and his passion for what he teaches is evident. Assignments are fair if you put a little work in. His expectations are clear and he's really gracious with grace period days. Take HIST 241 if you can, super interesting!!
The professor has a unique character, he has no filter and brings lot of personal political ideologies during class which I personally think is not necessary. He uses profanity as means of showing his aggression and disagreement to a person or group. Overall teaching wise, he is not a pleasant person to listen to but he does teach it well.
Professor Dueck made his lectures very educational and interesting. Some of my friends would attend his lectures even though they were not enrolled in his class.
Lectures are an absolute mess that consist of him flipping through random screenshots of newspaper clippings he's uploaded to his Facebook page, and going on tangents that don't tie back to the lesson. Assignment outlines were also a problem; it seemed the TAs were grading students on a different rubric than the students got.
I liked the class and the information was interesting, however content was unorganized and was a series of random websites and videos which were not planned. We did not recieve a syllabus until week 5, and were never given any type of rubric. Overall not too bad, just a little unorganized which made things confusing.
The goat Gord, take all of his classes if possible.
Terrible. Content was very interesting, but he was horrifically disorganized. Lectures were disjointed, half of them were spent scrolling through his Facebook feed to find what he wanted to talk about. Openly said he hates it when students email him. Syllabus didn't match the OnQ, due dates were wonky. Doesn't "believe in rubrics."
Worst lecturer at Queen's. Lectures are just spontaneous rants on a given day that don't follow any sort of progression throughout the course.
A lot of ppl complain that the lectures are disorganized and consist of random videos. This is not true. While it may seem random to those who attend class once a week, everything is very intentional and contributes to the larger message. He is funny and passionate. You'll do well if u take in everything he says, attendance isn't mandatory tho
This professor was not only useless at conveying course material but frightening and disrespectful to students. He relied on the textbook so much that the textbook may as well have been our prof. He used fear tactics to scream and scare the class and spread communistic ideology. I would not take any of his classes again.
he is very passionate about what he is teaching, and that make his students want to engage more inside and outside of the classroom. this course was very informative and he taught it well, and he gave ideas on how to properly complete assignments and was very understanding. great class and prof. no final exam either with was nice.
A great prof to teach this course - very empathetic towards students and passionate about holocaust history. He provides helpful tips and ideas regarding how to tackle writing assignments if you attend lectures. Overall, would take future courses that he teaches.
