He is an awesome teacher. there are 4 test and he only counts 3. the final is cumalitive but they are direct qustions from the other test. he keeps all of his students entertained and even throws candy out during tests. i would def. recommend him
The Maxwell text is a little preachy at times, but other than that, MGT 301 was awesome. Holbein is a very passionate, very good teacher (even if he does remind me of Dr. Phil.) I would highly reccommend his class.
Sincere, genuine, smart, funny, very helpful.
Best Professor you could ask for! He's helpful, knowledgeable, experienced, and awesome professor.
Very easy class. Holbein drops the lowest exam grade. If you do well on the first 3 exams you dont have to take the final. Easy class!
He seems to be a real nice guy...makes the class actually interesting and he lets you take best 3 of 4 test scores.
Great class! Really talk about real life issues and the tests are cake. He drops your lowest test so you don't have to take the final if you do well on the other exams!
A college student's dream teacher.
Awesome guy. Funny, down to Earth. Tells you exactly what to study. Easy A, and no final!
GOOD, INTERESTING PROFESSOR. Doesn't make you buy an expensive theoretical textbook either. Teaches based on real-life experience. Once again, TAKE HIM if you have to take MGT301. GOOD PROFESSOR.
$15 text book. Lots of common sense, deceptively easy sounding but exams harder. If you don't goto class, you wont get the notes and you wont do well on the exams. Class has a lot of "lists" and seems like it isn't very technical but it is VERY helpful. Don't come in late to an exam or you're screwed on the makeup. Great class and teacher.
Probably the easiest class at UK if you don't skip. Tests are straight from lecture and the book is $15. The questions on the tests are the most fair questions I have ever seen in my life. Definitely a class that will pad your GPA.
I really enjoyed this class. He presents a lot of applicable situations for after graduation job seeking. He has his moments, and if you take the class you will know what I am talking about. Go to office hours before the final exam because it is cumulative. He drops your lowest test grade. EASY!!
I really enjoyed this class. He presents a lot of applicable situations for after graduation job seeking. He has his moments, and if you take the class you will know what I am talking about. Go to office hours before the final exam because it is cumulative. He drops your lowest test grade. EASY!!
great teacher. Really helped focus on the language needed at the next level. Text is cheap, but relevant and something you can always relate back to. Highly recommended.
If you can't pass this class quit college!!! He is a great teacher, completly crazy but good!!!
Awesome laid back dude. Makes class interesting and has a very fun, unique teaching style. You can not go to any class except the review session and test days and get an A. However, you might enjoy going to his class. Definitely recommended!!!
Dr. Holbein is a great professor. His class is entertaining, educational, and very personal. He is especially helpful with career planning. His teaching is contemporary and subjective. I highly reccomend him and any class that he is teaching. His subjects are very real and you can relate the ideas to his class in just about anything that you do.
Great professor! He is very clear and the notes are easy to take. He doesn't believe in huge textbooks so you just use quotes from a little black inspirational book. BUT the catch is that you MUST show up to every class. The class notes are only given during the class and nowhere else. As long as you take good notes you should be golden.
easy. interesting class. Easy A or B. one of the best profs @ UK
I swear some days I think he is making up the class as he goes along. He's still interesting and explains things well. Goes through the test material the class before so you know exactly what to study.
Holbein is my favorite professor at UK. He is a great guy and he genuinely cares about his students. He is passionate about what he does, and keeps his students a priority. He claims to be an ally and help you if you have problems. Great teacher!
Holbein is an excellent teacher. Informative, and all of the class is designed for real-life. He eschews what he calls "boring, formula-heavy, textbook stuff." My only complaint is that the "textbook" is actually a small self-help book about management, and the test questions based on it are word-for-word quotations that are easy to miss.
"If you want to succeed double your failure rate!" One of Holbein's many cliches. On the 1st day of class he proudly stated that he was fired from a high HR position. The book was a self-help guide, his lectures were 30 minutes of the Wall St. Journal. His lectures were disorganized; his tests involved his own quotes. "Paradoxically" he teaches.
You'll get an A or B if you at least try. Very enlightening class that teaches management principles and relates them to real world examples from the Wall Street Journal. I left this class feeling like I really learned something I could use. Take this class if possible.
A cool guy but his lectures are very unorganized. He wants you to memorize quotes word for word and they are on the test! Very stupid.
He is a great teacher and I want to take him again for another class
Holbein is the best. He is extremely personable, and he is very passionate about what he is teaching, which makes students care as well. I am so sad that I won't be able to have him again!
Holbein is an amazing teacher! He is very passionate about what he teaches. The class is inspirational and motivating. I wish I was a MGT major, I would take every class he teaches. Overall, the class was easy, makes sure you attend class though!
Holbein interjects personal, funny anecdotes to combat the sometimes tedious lists students are required to memorize. He has a real passion for teaching and makes "real world" examples part of his lessons via Maxwell's 21 Indispensible Qualities of a Leader and the Wall Street Journal. MC exam questions and review sessions direct from tests
Hes a pretty conservative guy who doesnt mind forcing his views on you when you talk about articles in the wall street journal he makes you get. Other than that the class is fine but boring, really easy grade. KY class notes sells his notes so attendance is not necessary at all
overall good prof just do the work its not hard
Holbein is a GREAT teacher and he actually cares about his students. He is actually a genius and is only teaching because he retired from his real world job. Book is a self help book. Tests are based on lecture notes, wall street journal articles he talks about, and quotes from the self-help Maxwell book. Tests catch you off guard a bit. Easy B.
I got a B and didn't come to class much. There's no text book. He lectures his own material, quotes from a book, and the Wall Street Journal. Before the exams he tells you exactly what to study (given you have the notes). Buy KY Class Notes and they'll have everything you need. Study them carefully because he tries to trick you. Final is Optional.
Good teacher, his test can be a little tricky, in that he puts very small details on the tests sometimes but it isnt hard t pull a B on them. Final is opitional. you have to go if you want all the notes. Easy B-C, kind of a hard A
Don't bother going to class unless you just want to because the subject matter is interesting. Buy the red notes, study them carefully because he will try to trick you. Once you've taken the first exam, you will know how the rest will be. BE AWARE of what time the final exam is! He usually has it a little earlier than regular class time.
This class is an easy A if you are good at memorizing things pretty much word for word. Personally, I found the first exam to be a bit difficult, but the rest were pretty easy. I still don't really understand the point of this class, though. This being a requirement for all business majors is even more bizarre.
I really enjoyed this class. It is very easy as long as you get the notes and go to the review sessions. He tells you everything that is on the exam, it is just up to you to memorize it. If you study and put forth the effort, there should be no reason not to get an A.
Very easy class. If you show up and get the stuff from Wall Street Journal you will be fine. His tests are EXACTLY what he goes over on the review day. I'm unsure how you can get anything other than an A if you show to every class.
His tests are pretty tricky even if you study a lot. It seems like common sense stuff that he teaches you but for the sake of attempting to get an A in the class just memorize the stuff he tells you. Don't miss a class because his notes are what he tests you on.
Good class. Hes a little crazy though.
Absolutely the best class ive had in my college career. Hes definitely the smartest management mind on the campus. He really gives you insight beyond the class. If you are serious about mgt and dont take 499 with him you are really missing out
As a working student, I could not keep up with him. It's my fault for skipping but I'm working 40 hours a week just to be here. He is unorganized. You don't need to buy the Wall Street journal. Use the website to save money. He preaches about Maxwell so pay attention to that and his lectures. It sounds like rambling but it's all on the exam.
No need to go to class. You can buy his notes at Johnny Print and the class before he tells you exactly what is on the exam from the notes. His tests are difficult and you must know every detail of Maxwell and he tries to trick you. DON'T buy the Wall Street Journal. Study what is on the bought notes and that's all you need to know.
Dr. Holbein simply teachers you about life. The material covered in the class itself was immensely useful to business, management, and general living. My only complaint about the class was Holbein's approach to examination. Holbein focused on memorization, instead of conceptualization. Not beneficial for the retention of information in the future
This class was extremely difficult. I would never recommend taking it unless u want to fail. I took the W to opt of failing the second exam. Gordy boy is unclear on what is on the exam. I think he makes profit from the notes sold at johnny print on red paper. stingy. dont waste time or money on this class. xoxo
You have to go to class. He lectures all of the material, uses no powerpoint, and tells you what to underline in the "textbook." Do not subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, it's useless unless you intend to read it cover to cover and it's only helpful for extra credit points. He is a nice and funny man, though, and it was an interesting course.
If you don't get an A/B in this class, you need to rethink college. I never attended class nor received any bonus points from the clicker quizzes (which you can earn up to 10+ points per exam) and still got an A. Very funny and witty guy who actually uses real world examples to teach. no need for book or WSJ, just go to review sessions/buy JP notes
He was alright. Not the best, not the worst. His lecture was interesting and gave you a lot of information on life. Buy the notes. His tests are very specific. The exams are not about how much you know, but how much you memorized from the notes (you might like this style, but I do not). Pretty easy class overall.
Holbein is an awesome teacher! Follow him on twitter @strategicGFH. Go to class and answer the bonus questions for up to 10 bp per test. Grade is avg of 3 tests (Final is optional), counting bonus points.
Be prepared to read a lot of articles and have in-class discussions, but they are very helpful for exams. The exams and group presentations were stressful, but overall, if you put in the work, you'll do fine!
He talks in circles. Though he denies it, he makes money off of his notes at johnny print. He made a big deal out of it when a student posted the material online. Clearly doesn't want the best for his students. Exams are easy to get a B on if you study the material he tells you to, but you need to answer his extra credit. Getting an A is difficult.
He is a bore. I only went to the classes right before the exams because you can buy his notes about 3 days before the exam. The test comes exactly from the notes (word for word). You just have to memorize what he tells you to study to get a solid B or higher.
Terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE!
This guy is so full of himself. Any professor who thinks he can write his own textbook for the class and then force you to buy it is clearly on a level of pompousness that is nearly as hard to comprehend as the notes themselves. If you can take any other professor for 301, which is unlikely, avoid Holbein.
Just go to class... you're paying for it! He gives out bonus questions via clicker and all of his notes are sold at Jonny Print, but I loved listening to his lectures he is a smart guy! Buy the Maxwell book it is cheap and I catch myself reading it in my free time.
it was a good class and the book he has you read it amazing (but you dont have to read it). It was mostly common sense material. I went to every class because he offers bonus points during every class but I stopped taking notes. He has them printed at Johnny Print and I would just buy them there. Make sure to take the sample tests.
Professor Holbein is a Zenith of my College career. He is a man of many shades and lectures like a man on fire. There are no curves on his tests, and they are verbatim from the lecture and course material. He offers extra credit in the form of pop quizzes from the required WSJ readings that are on the exams. His course changed my life, for better.
Looks like Larry David and sounds like Brian Williams. Dr. Holbein has fantastic leadership knowledge to share. His advice is based on the real world rather than cold hard facts and thus there are only four exams, one of which is dropped (lowest grade). He appreciates attention although the lectures can feel long. Great professor.
Ok... you are expected to learn things like "the Holbein motto" and "the Holbein thumbtack" he is full of it. Thinks of himself as a GENIUS I'm sure part of that is because he is a large investor in a place called Johnny print, a place that you have to buy lecture notes for the exam because of no PowerPoint, so he screws students for profit.
Dr. Holbein makes the material very real world applicable. His personality tends to rub people the wrong way, though (he's kind of upfront about how smart he is). The lectures are optional, but I kind of enjoyed them. No textbook: just Maxwell's "21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader".
He is so full of himself. He makes you memorize his own made up quotes about life and information you will never use for his exams. This class is a huge waste of time. Offers extra credit with clickers if you can stand sitting through class.
He's so full of himself. He makes you memorize his own quotes and mottos for exams. There's no homework and you really don't have to go to class except to get extra credit. There's no curves on exams, but if you memorize the notes you'll be fine. I went to lecture twice and then decided to just buy the notes because I couldn't listen to him talk.
He is the definition of being full of himself. He gives 10 extra credit points between tests that are from Wall Street that are difficult, but you can guess and get some points. Your grade is determined by your four tests that you take, minus the lowest grade that he drops. DO NOT EXPECT ANY OTHER EXTRA CREDIT, YOUR GRADE IS YOUR FINAL GRADE.
The guy is not cool at all. He's very pompous and acts like he is easy but the course is difficult. Definitely take it in the summer with someone else if you can.
He quotes himself, and makes you remember his quotes as if they were from Aristotle. It's a real shame that he is such a poor teacher because the course has so much more potential than what he has to offer.
This is the easiest class you will ever take at UK. If you buy the notes and study them - you should earn an A, no problem. This is a stress free class.
Holbein's lecture's can be boring and you don't feel like you're learning anything worthwhile. He does give extra credit clicker points for attending class, but gives just a few seconds to answer them. You'll be lucky to get half your clicker points in. Tests are pretty easy, & drops the lowest one. I messed around and ended up with a high B
This is one of the few classes you will take that actually matter and will apply to you later on. Holbein gives extra credit questions that add as many as 10 points on to each test. He doesn't teach using a PowerPoint, but he is clear on what you need to write down. He also tells you what will be on the test. Easy A.
A great teacher that applies class to life and creates an easy to learn environment. Easy, enjoyable, and book costs about $10.00
To be honest, there is no reason you should not get and A, maybe a B if you messed around, in this class. You will need to buy the notes from Johnny Print, because he does not use PowerPoint slides and it is difficult to tell when material turns into a rant. More of a life lessons class than a management class.
Buy the notes and you will get an A. He tells you everything that's on the test, take like an hour to study that material and you'll be happy!
He is SO arrogant. Teaches you information he made up, some of it is useful but mostly is not understanding under any circumstance. Yes he gives extra credit but it is difficult to answer them in the few seconds he gives you. His test material is easily found in the notes but he tries to trick you. Take another prof in the summer. Trust me.
Boring as all get out in lectures so never went to class, which you don't have to attend. However, he owns Johnny Print and at the beginning of the semester says you can go there to buy his notes, so he is basically making a profit off of students. He is also very awkward, but tests are pretty easy but can be tricky. You have to remember notes.
This is one of few classes you will take where you actually want to pay attention because the information is all real world. Holbein is the man but buy the notes because he doesn't do power point slides. I never went to class and got an A on every exam, he doesn't take attendance and he tells you exactly what will be on the test in the review.
This is my favorite class I have ever had in college and one of the few that I feel like actually prepared me for my post-college career. Holbein is a great teacher (though a little conceited). Don't bother buying his book he tries to sell to you; you don't use it.
Holbein is a great professor, probably my favorite. He gives you so many extra credits. It is unreal to not get an A in his class. He is very smart and knows his stuff. Also, he is very useful outside of class and you can ask him anything and he'll try to help you the best he can. He prepares you for life!
Holbein is one of the best teachers you can find at UK. He really treats you like an adult and doesn't make you come to class. The tests are really easy, I didn't go to class for half a semester and i got A's on every test.
Holbein is really interesting and teaches you a lot of useful material about the real world. Your only grades come from tests and bonus questions, so make sure not to mess those up too bad, but he does drop your lowest score. It's a good class overall.
No homework, he tells you what will be on every test. If you take good notes and study the points he says will be on test you will be fine. If you have an A going in to final you don't have to take it. Lectures can be a little tedious but an easy A in my opinion. He is not boring, and I think he genuinely cares that we are successful in life.
"Mr. Holbein teaches us to, a good listener, but he is not himself" I suggest you guys to buy the WJS and get that bonus flickers because it really help a lot at the end in case you didn't do so well on the exam. This class should be a very easy A if you truly study and really needs to memorize a lot of the red notes that he sell from Johny Prints.
Your grade was based off 3 of your best 4 test. He gives extra credit if you subscribe to a WSJ and read the business articles from the last 5 days and go to class and answer questions ab them. But you don't have to go to class, you just have to buy the notes before the review session and he tells you everything that is going to be on the test.
Can be interesting to listen to but makes ZERO effort to connect with students on a human level. Just had a death in the family? Forget it, he will NOT let you make up the exam and you'll have to take a zero.
This class should really be called Quotes 101. I feel like all I did the entire semester was learn quotes from CEO's and one's that Holbein came up with. He does teach some valuable management/life skills and your grade only comes from 4 tests (lowest score dropped). Lectures are torture, but overall he's a decent professor.
Don't let him talk you into buying either of the textbooks-you don't need them. Just buy the notes from Johnny Print across the street. For the first test, I went to class every day and took meticulous notes and got a B. After that, I just bought the notes, skipped class, and got A's. You can skip the final if you're happy with your first 3 scores.
Easiest class this semester. The most important thing is to buy the Johnny Print notes & GO TO THE REVIEW SESSION. You do that & then study for a day, you will pass. He's fun to listen to, but since attendance wasn't mandatory, rarely anyone went. Download chrome ext. "Read Across the Aisle" for unlimited online passes to the WSJ, you're welcome!
He is a very nice, motivational guy but he tries to trick you on exams. It is a lot of material during lecture and only so little things chosen. He'll tell you what to study for the exam and then will sneak some stuff in there you don't even know. He is the only one that teaches it. so just make the best of it by studying hard.
Gordon is very narcissistic he quotes himself. You don't ever need to go to class just for review days. I went to one class and cringed the whole time because he has no powerpoints he just talks and you have to write down what he says so he moves very slow. the exams are easy if you're good at memorizing but very specific.
lectures are not mandatory but not absolutely everything is in the notes you can purchase. He drops your lowest test grade. His lectures are a bit dreary but he has some interesting moments. I went to class everyday and easily got an A without taking the final.
Great passionate lectures
Amazing class. Very useful and applicable to real life. Really easy too. Lectures aren't mandatory but you will not regret the things you learn from this guy.
While attendance isn't mandatory for this class, I highly recommend you go anyway. Dr. Holbein, while sometimes slightly condescending, is a very inspirational professor and makes you think about your life in a different light. Your grade is based on three exams (one of four is dropped). He will tell you to buy the books, but there's no need to.
