EXCELLENT professor. Gives GREAT lectures. However his tests are VERY HARD.
Mr. Lam's views of history are the only ones that count in this class, whether he is correct or not. Also, he loves to ask trick questions on his exams.
He is knowledgeable, well organized, and has a strong, commanding voice that is excellent for recording. As far as history, he is the best!
Good lectures, interesting and keeps your attention. Has strong opinion on History and is confident he is right. Watch for trick questions. Grades hard.
YIKES! What can I say about Dr. Lam... He's tough. But you can tell he really loves to teach (loved the time he jumped up on the desk yelling "the colonists did NOT go to war over taxation - if you say they did I will fail you" Now that's passi
Dr. Lam is an incredible scholar. He is passionate about his subject, and he makes learning fun!
GREAT TEACHER! I went into the class thinking I wouldnt learn anything. Wrong! He makes you learn it, and in a FUN WAY! Don't worry about reading any of the material; just pay attention during lectures, and EASY A !
Take one of Dr. Lam's classes if you really want to learn history and are up for a bit of a challenge. His class is pretty straight foreward. Take good notes, write quality essays, and study for tests and you will do just fine.
Took both parts of History with him - he is a fantastic teacher. If you want to learn anything - take him!! The class is hard, but it is worth it, you remember so much! Finals/Midterms are essays FYI
Ok, i cant begin to say enough about Dr. Lam. He is a great teacher, makes learning history easy fin and interesting you learn so much from his classes. Best history teacher i ever had. He is passionate about what he does and that helps us students to be interested in the class. Good Job, Dr Lam.
Great Teacher, Sometimes he seems to think everything he says is "right" 98% is true, but you can't always be right. Oh...most important call him Dr. Lam, not "Mr., professor, instructure" He's "DR.Lam".....What the Problem Is?
Awesome class! I took him over the summer, i was very interested in what he had to say. Wonderful visuals and movies, and stories. I would take him again in a heart beat! If you like to write, i would highly recommend him!He keeps you on your feet!
ex-military luitenant says it all
He is a horrible teacher, he is intimidating and unclear. His grading is not only unfair, but he is vague about what he wants in his essays and papers. I wish that I had never taken his class.
This guy is a raving liberal LOON. If you are a raving liberal LOON yourself then by all means take him. If you actually have your own thoughts, then don't bother with this fruit because he grades down on anyone who doesn't agree with his wacked view of revisionistic history.
Mixed feelings about this class. He's rude but sometimes helpful. Assignments sometimes unclear and the Midterm/Final extremely hard. Not my favorite class or teacher. Not all that enthused about the class.
Good class, easy to follow. He will let you know what you should study by yelling or pounding the board. Mark you notes with that info and you'll do fine. Only complaint is that he would let people in late to the final. It was distracting.
Challenging class(es), but a good teacher. If you goof off or try to weasel your way to an A he will clamp down on you, but his lectures can be entertaining (with some humor every once and a while). He will explain stuff over again, but sometimes will intimidate you into not asking. Would take him again.
He's an ex-military guy, which makes for some okay war stories, but he is a little heavy on the rules and regulations. It is often difficult to tell what he expects in his assignments until after you get a bad grade. He is entertaining, though.
horrible teacher...would never take him again...try to ask a ? if u want to feel stupid or just wait for him to call on u.
Good teacher. Always keep up on the readings. Pay close attention to the writting assingment guide- lines. Note part of the final is essay and very hard. All-In-All I liked his teaching and I'm taking the next class with him. note..I took the class in the summer and it went by fast and was a little stressful.
I took the summer course and the average grade was 1.5. What does that tell you? If you are a new student or returning to school after 20 years he is not the instructor for you. Also, he says things like, "oh come on, you learned that in the 6th grade". News flash...not everyone did! Seems to enjoy putting people down.
Engaging lecturer, keeps your interest, but his reading/writing assignments are hard and often confusing, and quizzes will have questions on little details that are a lot of work to study for. If you are willing to work and have some interest in learning history I recommend this class.
this guy was very unpleasent~~ he graded based on how much he liked u or that you agreed with his views~~~~ do not take this class
Professor Lam is a very hard grader. He explains what you did wrong on tests as if to show how stupid you are. Doesn't seem to care about the students and his writing assignments are impossible to get good grades on. In a class with over a hundred students, two people succeeded in getting an A grade. Find a different history teacher than this guy!
He is one of the best teachers I have had at FLC. Do not take this as a summer class. There is too much to take in the short amount of time. You can pass this class if you take good notes and pay special attention to the major points in his lectures. You will learn a lot.
Best teacher I ever had at FLC great guy! Funny entertaining, you will learn more than in any other history class. Not the easiest but give him a shot, he is a cool dude.
Great teacher. Professional, intresting, great lectures. A little old school when is comes to hats off in class and no talking, being on time, turing in homework on time. But if you were serious about being a student, you would love him as a teacher. Writing assignments and tests are a little challenging but he lets you know what you did wrong!
Loved him so much I took another class with him. He’ll tell you what he wants from you, do it and you’ll learn a lot and get a good grade. The best thing is to take notes and listen well because he will cover everything that will be in the tests. As for the writing assignments if you do what the assignment says to then you'll be fine with.
Very strict, doesn't care about each student individually. Professor Lam has hundreds of students, and if they slip through the cracks, he doesn't care.
Gordan Lam is the biggest **** ever. The worst teacher at Folsom Lake College. He is very unapproachable, very rude to his students, doesn't give a**** about any of his students, and he hates women. stay the **** away from his class. anybody else can do a better job.
Agree with others re: hard grader. Tests OK, but essays caused me to get the only B in my 3.95 gpa after 77 units. Only 1 right way to do each essay per Dr. Lam - no matter how much work you do on them. If you take his class, go to his office for extra help before turning in final draft of essays!! Great lectures, learned a ton.
he is a good teacher if u pay attention.....if not you will fail. he tells you exactly what he wants and exactly how to do it. short papers and long tests....BE PREPARED TO WORK VERY HARD.
Dr. Lam is THE MOST ENTERTAINING LECTURUR I HAVE EVER SEEN! All the stuff about him being sort of uppity is true; he has little tolerance for people who don't do the reading and come to class prepared. As far as I am concerned, if one does the reading and pays attention in class, this is in easy class from a great teacher.
BE PREPARAED TO WORK YOU ****IN ASS OFF.
Be very prepared to WORK HARD. Altho a good speaker, Dr Lam doesn't seem to be very student friendly "as-in" he doesn't try to help students who struggle (whether or not they read/prepare). He's black and white, doesn't make considerations.
If he can teach a 45 year old who has never liked history, he's a great teacher. Extremely organized. Great lecturer! Always told you what he expected. Yes, you work very, very hard! If you come to class, take good notes, put effort into your essays and study for tests, you'll pass. Bonus, YOU WILL LEARN!
I thought this class would be easy because the material is not that difficult, but he is the hardest grader ever! He really likes putting people on the spot, so be prepared to be called on when you don't know the answer! Tests are extremely difficult! If you take this class be prepared to work your ASS off!!!
NOT a student friendly teacher. Could care less at how many people struggle because of his difficult grading standards. He is VERY hard to please, especially on written homework/test questions. HOWEVER, his lectures are quite fun and entertaining. But, Overall - not recommended. You dont get the grade you deserve.
Great lecturer! I learned a ton in this class, and Dr. Lam is very challenging. He is a tough grader, demands the best from you and has ZERO tolerance for ****, don't even try it. If you want an easy class, look elsewhere. If you want to learn, take one of Dr. Lam's classes. Note: He tells you the essay questions in advance, just pay attention!
Dr. Lam is a dynamic professor who knows his subject matter and teaches enthusiastically. I would highly recommend him as a professor who will motivate you to teach history to others - even in a parking lot!
Yes, he does enjoy the material he teaches, which can make the lectures not boring, but overall, he isn't the great of a lecturer as far as being extrememly clear and organized. EXTREMELY hard to please, VERY tough grader and is all around a jerk. Not a nice guy. Routinely makes fun of people in class, in front of the whole class. Not recommended.
Lams is big on student participation and calls on random students a lot. His midterms/finals are very detailed, by looking at the public grade sheets it's easy to note that maybe 20% of the students actually *pass* the exams. Unless you're big on history, your grade has to come from quizzes and writing assignments (which he grades very strictly).
Extremely hard exams and overall just a hard teacher. His lectures were very intersting in the class, i enjoyed the class and him as a teacher, the only downfall is difficult exams, and he calls on random students a lot and puts them in the spotlight, which is another downfall.
Only 17 students finsihed the 2006 spring class. No A's were given. Only 2 B's and 15 C's. The rest of the class failed or dropped out.
Good instructor.Don't bother taking him if you're a slacker, he'll be all over you. I got a B without really trying that hard. Exams are not hard if you take notes in class (I didn't read one page of the textbook). Writing assignments are graded tough but fair. You'll learn a lot from Lam. Be prepared to answer questions in class (Socratic Method).
Very hard grader. Lot's of work. Puts students on the spot during class. Many points are going to be lost on mid-term & final. Not one student recieved an A in the class. Many will drop out, the rest will question if they will pass the class.
Do the work, show up, and pay attention, that's all you have to do to pass the class. He tends to call on the slackers in the class, so if you pay attention he won't call on you. I was called on once, and I had not been paying attention. Great lecturer, you won't go to sleep in his class. If you slack, find another instructor.
excellent teacher. He runs with millitary efficiency. Just get your work done, follow instructions, and take notes. He does such a good job on his lectures you dont have to utilize the book as much. I really like the guy he is my favorite teacher. However if your a lazt person, or you procrastinate get another teacher, never talk when he is talking
In my opinion hes not a good teacher. He comes at you with a militant approach, and likes to nitpick over the most random things. Keep in mind that ratings you read could be slightly skewed since they could be from other teachers. I went off the advised ratings,..I wish I had payed more attention to the validity of the negative ones
Teaches like a dictator. I liked him at first, but not anymore. Tests are hard. Class has 5 essays, I think 3 tests, a mid-term, a final and a group project in the end. Doesn't act concerned about the success of his students. I'm taking this class to get my AA, not to MAJOR in History.
I have taken 3 classes from Dr. Lam. He is awesome at lecturing. His class is never boring but he can be very hard on students. He's not afraid to offend you or make you feel stupid. He's a very hard grader in fact I don't know a single person who got an A on his writing assignment. But over all, I learned a lot from him and I loved his class!
He teaches very well but, he doesn't know how to grade. He teaches like he's still in the military and is pissed off at the world. Everybody, and I mean everybody thinks that he grades too hard for no apparent reason. Just to screw you and your GPA. Take another History teacher, you'll thank me later.
I'm never out to trash talk ANYONE but this is truly the worst prof ever. I absolutely love history and have done very well in it (straight A's since taking from Lam). His test are truly ridiculous, he never makes sense on what he wants in his papers, and he lives to undermine and slander you personal historical heroes.
Dr. Lam can be very mean sometimes, there was a girl in my class he was leaving to use the restroom and he wouldn't let her leave until she answered his question, she was dancing to, it was very awkward. I have never encountered so difficult a prof to please before. he makes no sense on what he wants in the papers. Stay away from Dr. Cruelty
Hard class-lots of work. You probably wont get the grade you were going for, but you will learn a lot.
this class is really tough i tried the whole semester and still failed because his tests are extremely ridiculous, and he makes the midterm and final worth so much towards your grade.
I didnt do too bad in his class...but he is absolutely ridiculous...i would NOT recommend him. he made me leave class on the final review day just because i didnt print out the stupid study guide. he is a jerk. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He is not friendly. It is not his job to be friendly. He is an awesome lecturer, and a very competent teacher. I have taken two classes from him, and I recieved an A both times. Do you know how I did it??? I studied! I showed up to class! I had a bluebook on test days! All I did was I FOLLOWED HIS SYLABUS! That is what it takes to get an A.
Wow – Extremely hard. He is one of the most straight forward and knowledgeable teachers I’ve had. I learned a lot in this class. But test, quizzes, and how he grades essays are hard.
Wow – Extremely hard. He is one of the most straight forward and knowledgeable teachers I’ve had. I learned a lot in this class. But test, quizzes, and how he grades essays are hard.
Very strict about everything
Professor Lam is an awesome teacher, his lectures are the greatest!! He will walk all around the class, jump on tables ,scream out loud. His homework and test are really hard, but he is extremely fair and if you listen to the instructions you will do fine! I recommend his class to anyone who has a decent work ethic.
Great professor! Be prepared to work for your grade though! By far one of my favorite teachers! He keeps you awake that's for sure! If he pounds on the walls or jumps on the table make sure to take notes about what he is saying! It WILL be on the test!
Very Hard..and Strict in behavior and giving marks. Never gives exams easy. My advice is not to take the his class.
Lam is great! He makes history really interesting and fun (his Army experience shines through). My advice: Be ready to work hard from the beginning, follow all directions exactly, sit in front, write everything down. He is tough, but not too unreasonable. I couldn't take anyone else.
LAM IS A WONDERFUL LECTURER! HE MAKES CLASS FUN AND ENTERTAINING AS HE STANDS ON HIS DESK AND TALKS ABOUT WAR. HIS WAR STORIES MAKE IT ENTERTAINING JUST MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT SLEEPING OR USING YOUR CELL PHONE...HE WILL KICK YOU OUT! HIS TESTS ARE INCREDIBLY HARD AND HIS STUDY GUIDES AREN'T WORTH USING!
LAM IS A WONDERFUL LECTURER! HE MAKES CLASS FUN AND ENTERTAINING AS HE STANDS ON HIS DESK AND TALKS ABOUT WAR. Professor Lam is a great teacher. You can tell he knows his stuff & he explains it well. He doesn't mess around though -- attendance is expected (be early; not just on time). Most of the tests and quizzes are based on his lectures, so take good notes.
I have mixed feelings about Professor Lam. He knows history and does a good job of explaining it, but he is very strict and makes you work a lot. I respect his strictness with the rules, but he is absolutely inflexible. He also gives several writing assignments and gives tests that are a real challenge. If you take his class, expect to work hard.
Professor Lam is a fantastic teacher. He really knows his subject and doesn't ask for an unreasonable amount of work from his students. If you ever have a question about anything he teaches, he is more than happy to expand on that topic. It's just a shame that he is teaching a first year course. He could teach the subject at a higher level.
Awesome teacher when it comes to lectures! I learned sooo much from his class. However, beaware that he is a hard ass!! You CANT B.S. the writing assignments, and you MUST study or you wont pass the class. Overall: Hard class but you will learn a lot. Dont plan on getting an A or B in the class. Most people barely pass.
MEANEST AND HARDEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE SO FAR
I really like this guy. His lectures are very interesting! He keeps things exciting. You will learn so much. He is also a very funny. I think he's pretty nice, too. His tests and essays (these especially), and hard for lots of people because they dont take enough time to STUDY. If you study and do all the work you get a decent grade.
I loved this class. Enjoyed his lectures- easy to follow and interesting. It's not that hard of a class if you study, do the work, and really try to figure out what he wants. If you participate, he will like you more. Writing assignments are hardest, but just keep on topic & be concise. I'm taking further history classes from him for sure.
Very good lectures!! Keeps the subject interesting and easy to understand. You must attend class - lots of information given each class. Study the notes! His tests follow his lectures...Very fair teacher.
You can pass his class, I would have done better if I did not have so many other classes. You do need to study for his quizzes, but if you study your lecture notes you should do fine. His exams feel like they are near impossible though. But he is extremely interesting. He made history interesting for me actually. Take him, I recommend him!
This professor is a big bigot. If you are a Christian, and worse a Catholic prepared yourself for the many ( and I meant it- almost every class, sometimes more than once) derrogatory comments on the Catholic Church. I never felt this bad in a classroom before!
He should have stayed in the Army. He is unbending and unwilling to meet students half-way. I got an A in myy English 302 class, but I average about a C on his essays. Therefore, really hard to get an A, I didn't. I would take another professor if I were you guys. Only good thing I can say about him is that he has lots of insight about the Army/war
Don't take professor Lam's classes unless you are a perfectionist. He is very militant and unapproachable. If you do meet with him, he lectures you and intimates you. He should be teaching at a military school not a junior college. His lectures are intesting, but he expects absolute perfection on all assignments and discussions.
Professor Lam is a very knowledgeable teacher but very precise, militant, and at times intimidating. You will work hardest on interpreting essay assignments. Lam actually grew on me the last weeks of class (he has a less intimidating side if you arrive early to class and chat). You will not get an A, but you will learn!
He is a nice enough guy, has some entertaining stories to tell, but the class is kind of hard. The writing assignments are impossible to do well on, unless you REALLY understand the prompt. The quizzes aren't bad, the tests are a little hard. The reading is actually pretty easy, but it didn't help me much.. Lectures are interesting.
SO HARD! I could never give him what he wanted in his essays!?! He did offer some redemption with an extra credit project, but I still got a C+ when I usually get A's. You will learn some good stuff though (I guess that is why we are here at the college...)
Dr. Lam is very knowledgeable but he is not helpful if you have to approach him. He is very good at teaching during class but don't talk to him after because he will make you regret it.
He's not that bad. He can be pretty funny. He also gives a decent lecture. The quizzes were okay, overall. The hardest part is the writing assignments. He's a bit tough with grading those but if you do a good enough job and put some effort in them, you'll do fine on those. He may come across as a bit intimidating but just do what he expects.
I enjoy this class a lot! You learn a lot from him but if you wanna do good in his class, you will have to work HARD. WORK HARD, GO TO CLASS, DO YOUR WORK and you'll be ok. It's totally worth it!
Although he can be scary when you likes to randomly call on people in class, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I recommend him if you actually want to learn!
This guy definitely knows what he's talking about, I'll give him that much. He is incredibly passionate about history and you can tell he knows his stuff. However, he pretty much doesn't give a crap about making himself helpful to his students. I would recommend students who have a lot of free time to take this class. Lots of studying. hes rude too
Ok so if you think this class is going to be an easy A...get out now!! He is such a good teacher and his power point is amazing. If you take notes everyday, pay attention in class, and make sure you do your essay every week, then you will pass..no prob!! Lam is a fountain of knowledge and I actually learned a lot!!!
See my comments below...but I forgot to add that he is very funny but if you don't like crass very blunt humor then you probably will think he is an ass...
This professor will teach you a lot and his lecture are very interesting. Many people are saying that his essay assignments and exams, etc. are challenging but they aren't at all, they are impossible!! I think there is some sort of language barrier issue where he miscommunicates what he really is asking for. It makes it difficult to do assignments.
Horrible teacher do not take him, he is hard and not fair. Trust me DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tests are impossible. tons of reading homework. no late work. overall bad experience.
Dr. Lam no doubt is a great speaker.Ques. on tests can have sev. answers when he only wants one. Essays are graded so rigidly that there is no way to give him what he wants. I had him proof it first & still got a C!Our class as a whole rcvd. a D. I did ALL extra credit so I rcvd a B. I WAS a 4.0 prior to his class. Run don't walk AWAY from this man
Very disrespectful to his students--unless you are Asian. Brags about being in Vietnam, which means he was not the hard ass he proclaims to be. I got the second highest grade in the class--the rest of my peers got C's and F's (no kidding). He even said that he drinks while he grades tests!!! He thinks that failing students looks well on his part.
WORST "TEACHER" EVER!!!! Not only is he the worst teacher ever, he is the rudest and such a prick. There is no pleasing him on the essays either. I am convinced he sits around all day asking how horrible he can make a student's day. If you even see him on campus, RUN AWAY!
Overall good experience. Essay's were graded quite stiffly, but he prepares you very well beforehand. I learned the most I have ever learned in a History class with Dr. Lam. His sense of humor can sometimes be misinterpreted but overall I would take him again.
EXTREMELY Crude, mean, and disrespectful. He(as I see it) does not care about his students or even want to see them do well. His tests have multiple correct answers, you better pick his. Class is HELL and I dread it. I've never truly DISRESPECTED a teacher but he is undeserving and I have no respect for this horrible man. RUN, HE BLOWS!
Very harsh grading, doesn't offer much assistance outside of class, test questions are very vague
Very smart guy. If you are interested in history, you will enjoy his class. He does come off like a jerk sometime, but dont be sensitive. Quizzes are not hard, essays are hard. You will learn a lot.
His lectures are the most interesting aspect of his class. If you take good notes the quizes are fair. The essays are impossible!!! When you go to him for clarification, he basically gives you a riddle!!! It is impossible to figure out what exactly he is looking for. This class trashed my 3.9 GPA!
You will learn a lot from Lam, he presents a lot of information clearly. He has a very strict demeanor, but as long as you take notes and do all assignments, passing the class with a good grade is easy. He is a good teacher, although his strictness may be a problem for some.
Powerpoint notes were well organized and well explained. Material was understandable and well explained. I appreciated his sense of humor and even his strictness.
He is very passionate about wha he does which makes his lectures very interesting but he is inrealistic when it comes to what he expects from his students! His tests are mostly comprised of essays ( a ridiculous number of essays) and he doesn't even give you the topics! I was able to pull a B, but I found myself very frustrated when studying for his test :( Don't take him. Don't put yourself through that!
Dr.Lam is a great professor and he is extremely passionate about what he does. His papers are very difficult and his essays on tests are hard. Overall the class was enjoyable and I learned a lot. I would advise you to be prepared to study extensively and see him during office hours. Ask questions during class to obtain clarity.
This teacher is a tough one his essay assignments are impossible, so un less your an english buff you might have a hard time, even if your good he will still rip u a new one. the test aren't text based they're from his notes so u better not miss a beat good luck
Here's the real deal.Lam is very tough. What most people don't understand is that he is tough because that's how life is. He is not just teaching history he is teaching you how to succeed in life!If you half-ass it your grade will reflect it If you try you will pass. If your psycho you will get an A. It would be my privilege to take his class again
I hated learning about history but I had to take it as a pre-req. He made me interested in learning about our history. If you take good notes and remember what you write down, you will get an A and have a extremely well rounded knowledge of our history. Great Teacher!!!!!
Dr. Gordon lam is a tough teacher teacher. His military demeanor shows from the minute your first lecture begins. Expect to write 2 full essays and 40-60 questions on your exam. When writing the essays stick to the subject, if you're a history buff and make out of the box or other event connections form that time don't do it.
Fairly strict military demeanor, which can be a bit abrasive. He gets straight to the point; quizzes, writing assignments, exams, and no lame projects or presentations. He spelled everything out for the writing assignments. Easy B, an A will take a little more time.
He's a tough teacher. The class consists of 4 essays (3pages each), 1 midterm (30questions with 3 essay questions to answer-doesn't give you the questions to study for though), and a final just like the midterm. He grades tough. Be sure to utilize his office hours. DO NOT miss a class. You learn alot, but if you want an easy A, don't take his class
what college teacher doesn't allow hats in class? This guys a joke.
He is a great professor. He explains the information in a clear and easy to understand way, however, his class is not easy, and there are many essays and many quizzes. If you are willing to come to class, on time, and ready to learn you will have no problem with this class. Overall, an excelent professor!
Run away from this guy! Yes he knows his stuff and his class is interesting but he is impossible. dropped my essay grad from a B to D because I forgot page numbers. 70% of the class failed the midterm and he didn't care. test questions are vague and only wants specific essay responses. A very hard class for being just general ed!
I took the 6 week summer course: 4 quizzes, 4 essays, a project and a final. The final alone consisted of 4 essays and 50 multiple choice test. He knows his stuff but easy to fall behind if you skip class or don't read. Strict grader on essays and gives points for random iclicker questions. If you don't want to work for your grade take maddock at Sierra
Got a B and I was the third best grade in the class. He failed a lot of students. Grades too harsly on the essays. Interesting lectures. No one in the class got an A. It's too bad Folsom has so many of these type of professors.
He is an arrogant impossible man. If you are strong into military then I believe you have an in with him. Don't expext a good grade from him after doing a lot of work. Everyone I know that has taken him has dropped his class. He also likes to humiliate people in front of the class. Only positive with him is that he does not his history.
He is a good professor and knows what he is talking about but he is zoo hard! Class is hard even if you work hard and study. Good luck.
Concor with most of whats been said. Good Lecture. Will humiliate you if you ask questions at times. TOOO Harsh on the essay grades. Class went from 25 to 12 in attendance...many drops. Busted My ass for a Low B (highest points in Class)My First non "A"...
If you want to learn about history, take this class. If you want ANY hope of getting an A, don't. "B"s are managable. He's an intense person but he's passionate about history and knows what he's talking about. If you're like me and can't stand the thought of not getting an "A" this is probably not the class for you. Quizzes=Ok Essays=Tough
Hard class. Lectures are interesting. His assignments are extremely hard. He is really particular on his writing assignments and his test questions are very tricky. Not an easy class to get a good grade in. Only 5 people got B's. No one got A's.
He pounds on a hard surface to get student attention...felt this was an aggressive teaching strategy
To give you an idea of his grading policy, only one student from his 3 HIST 313 classes (about 75 students) recieved an A. He is an excellent speaker, but is ruthless when it comes to taking off points. He has no problem failing students. You MUST go to office hours if you want a decent grade. My hardest class of the semester.
Amazing professor!! You will not realize the value of his teaching style until you are out of the classroom and are amazed by how much you retain. You get out of Dr.Lam's class what you put into it. If you think you can sleep in the back or facebook during lecture, expect your grade to reflect your bad attitude.
Good lecturer, but a really, really hard teacher. only 1 student got an A out of the 3 classes he taught.
hardest class of my whole life! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. 75% fail rate. drop this class right now and take it with anybody else. not one person got an A or B in this class. majority failed. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!!
BY FAR THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER AT FLC!!! AND THE WORST I HAVE EVER TAKEN, and trust me, I have had many bad teachers before! If your an A student you become a C student. HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TEACH! Take William Maffei. His assignments are pertinent to your growth as a student and is by far a better teacher!
Because I was doing bad on a test he punished me and because he was a Drill Sargent, he know how to get under my skin, if you know what I mean ;). If you say something wrong or don't clock in on time he will ridicule in front of the class. Take Maffei instead. Cus Lam will punish you ;)
Class was interesting, but he is a very hard grader.
Mister Lam, if you think that the experience for you to be in military is the reason that being ruthless to us, It's wrong.
he is more concerned about making students feel bad than he is about what his job title entails: TEACHING. when students attempt to help each other out, apparently that is unacceptable. also, the appearance of someone's binder and/or folders for class is NOT a subject of discussion and has no connection to a job interview. don't take his classes.
Professor lectures with conviction and passion about historical events. All else is very militant. Teaches by interrogation and can be humilitating. Tough grading on essays - exams are not consistent with lectures, tricky. I'm over 40 and returning to college for career change. He a bit much for me. 2 words best describes his methods - BOOT CAMP!
The hardet part about Lam's class was the papers! If you want to pass the class you must take your papers to him to look over.
Horrible teacher.
I do not recommend at all. By the end of the semester th 40 person class was down to 15. Out of those 15 maybe 10 passed. Out of those 10, 1 B the rest were Cs. Really tough class. Super Interesting to hear his stories, but not worth it.
Good, yet difficult teacher. Writing assignment are hard, see him during his office hours. Quizzes are easy. Attendance is a must. His blunt comments might be harsh for some, yet he is clear on what he wants. If you need an A, good luck. B's are manageable.
Definitely the hardest class I have ever taken. Do not expect to get an A if you are an A student. In my class we started out with 40 students, 16 decided to drop. At the end of the semester, 8 passed and all were Cs except for one B. He is very specific of what he wants, and if you listen to exactly what he says you'll pass.
This professor is tough, it's true. HOWEVER, I feel that his courses prepared me the most for university. If you pass his class, then you know you can pass anything that comes your way. If you are a good student and study the way that you should, then you should do just fine. I took 2 of his courses in the same semester and I was able to pass both.
Dr. Lam's job is to teach history. He is dedicated to doing that by the effort he puts into his lectures. It is his responsibility to prepare his students for university life. His course content, grading methods and test/essay oraganization shows that. If the student isn't up for the same level of dedication, his classes aren't for you.
Yes hes hard, but for you kids trying to make it to a UC Gordon Lam is the real deal. Community college is supposed to prep you for CSU/UC campus level rigor. Gordon Lam is the closest to the UC level that I can remember in my 2 years at FLC. Study hard, write good papers, and don't let his methods deter you. He is a good teacher.
Great lecturer, clear & organized (you won't really need to read the book if you pay attention in class). Quizzes are easy, but he is a VERY hard grader of the essays. Make sure to follow his directions on the format, and visit his office for help on the essays. Take his class only if you're interested in history because it is a lot of work.
He is very hard, but his lectures are very interesting and he is very high energy. The essays are what really brings a grade down. Tough grader.
Confusing grader!! And not clear. And will only accept his weird answers on tests, exactly as he would say it. Too bad he doesn't say it until after the test...
