THE Scottish Sensation (his code name among my friends) He's really approachable, and is always prepared. He's very approachable, and always willing to help whenever one is in doubt. He definately knows what he's talking about. Yes, he's breathtakingly handsome...never a bad thing.
going to clas helps but its hard to understand im w/ his accent. go over slides on your own & learn from there if you have a hard time w/ his accent. he suggests buying the book but its not worth it. pts come from quizzes, so do well. 2 midterms but only takes the grade from one. final is a mix of material from both midterms & some new lec materia
The class is not the most thrilling, but he presents the material well and if you go to class and review the slides he posts on ilearn, you'll do fine. Go to the discussions, the quiz's are worth a third of your grade. Focus on the slides above all, you can basically leave the book untouched. If this class counts as G.E. credit take it, its easy.
G. Love does have an accent, but he is still understandable. The class is boring, but he does know this subject thoroughly. Attendance is absolutely not mandatory; however, you must attend your discussions for quizzes! They are worth a chunk of your grade. Do not bother buying the book! Just review the slides he posts on ilearn and you'll do fine.
Honestly, this class is a pretty difficult class. Unless you're good at memorizing really specific facts and i mean A LOT of specific facts, you'll do fine. Because he hits you with a lot of those. Even with studying, the best I could get on quizzes was a 7/10. If you can, try and take another EASIER geoscience. Oceanography is hard!
i agree, this class def wasnt easy. no study guides, so you have to know almost all the info on the lecture slides. The final is cumulative of 17 chapters, so dont think you'll just cram. he does drop the lowest of 2 midterms. Ta's vary, some are hard and some easy. Try to get chris. He's way chill.
He is a good professor. He knows what he's talking about, but he does it so boring. You don't need to attend class, but must study all the slides in order to do good on quizzes. The midterms & final are hard so try to find someone that has the head TA. He actually gives out study guides so you don't have to study 17 chapters worth of notes.
The midterms (2) were misleading in that they were so simple, while the final was comparatively much more difficult. I studied for the final in the exact same way I did for the midterms (getting As for both), but got a frustrating C on the final. It was almost as if he purposely set us up for disaster with a surprise final-from-hell.
He teaches the subject well and puts together a well rounded story bringing everything together.
Prof. Love was sympathetic and understanding about personal problems that affected my progress. Quiet but seems like a good guy.
DONT take this class iam like being honest here took it last quarter, i went to class even though it wasnt mandatory thinking he would give study guides or something, not at all the fianl is culmulative its hard i deeply regeret taking this class... unless your good in memorizing then go ahead. TRUST DONT TAKE IT!!!
really hard to understand.
Fab class but not easy
Does well to teach a fairly boring class and keep it interesting
He does explains all the concepts and facts on his slides. He is a fair grader, but his teaching can be very dull. His scottish accent does not help, but even makes the class more borring. His midterms can be tricky but its 2 midterm and the grade is based on the best one, then there's the final. Take it if you're good at memorizing.

he is so inconsiderate! i had the flu and the doctor on campus specifically told me i am not allowed on campus and that i will be excused from class. however i had a midterm the next day and i emailed gordon love with the doctor's note. professor love replied that i am not allowed to retake my midterm...
seriously do not take this class!...unless u r good with memorizing....i honestly attended all lectures and discussions, but i still failed this class. i studied really hard for this class but bombed the midterms and final, the quizzes weren't so bad. BTW we do not get any study guides, ur basically on ur own in this class, and book is expensive.
dont buy the textbook. It's hard to even pay attention in the class cus of that scottish accent.boring! boring!
This Class was so boring I fell asleep in the lectures all the time but its honestly NOT hard at all. You dont need to buy the text, if you review the slides at least once a week you'll do fine. I studied them the night before and I was one percent away from an A :( You dont need to go to class. Its alllll!!!! the slides!
The class is very straight forward, and graded on a curve. Just show up to lecture for your own benefit and be sure to study.
Cool teacher....weekly quizes are pretty easy!! Just read the lecture notes!
He is really helpful and fair. Also, his examples help a lot when understanding the material. His accent is to die for, if that's any motive to show up for class.
Fair and easy class. He lectures based off the power point and later puts it up on ilearn. Don't buy the textbook. You wont use it. Everything is based off the slides. The material isn't hard. He talks funny with accent.
I think this class is not an easy class at all, need to put a lot of effort in it to get a good grade. Weekly quizzes!! Attendance and textbook are not mandatory. Just memorize all the powerpoint slides and you should be fine. Good thing is he curves alot~!!!!
Excellent Professor. Witty and knows what he's talking about. All you need do is attend lecture and pay attention. His slides were all I used to study!!
He is pretty boring, but does give you lots of hints for whats gonna be on the tests, really easy class.
Don't waste your money on the book, the book is over priced and you never use it. You don't need to go to class just memorize the lecture slides on iLearn. do not attend the last lecture it's pointless. attend weekly quizes...pretty boring but he tries to make it entertaining with his scottish accent
He lectures right out of his PowerPoint presentation; so the book isn't really needed at all. The class itself is fairly interesting and his tests are pretty fair since he hints at what's going to be on the test. He's pretty gorgeous, if that's any motivation for people to attend class.

This was an interesting, well taught class. Not easy though there are different levels of difficukty depending on how far into this you get. But if you just want to get a good grade you can study wisely without having to read the book.
Good Professor who makes ideas clear. Top Scot.
Tough class. If you are not willing to work hard, then do not bother with this class. Interesting things though, plus, his accent makes it entertaining. Drops 2 quiz scores and takes highest mid-term grade. The slides are all you need. DO not buy the book.
i did not attend any lectures yet still managed to get and A+. study his slides.
Professor Love is a great taecher and pretty hot too.
I went to class mainly to listen to his awesome Scottish accent. Memorize his notes and you'll do fine on his tests.
This class was a lot easier than i thought! NO NEED TO BUY A BOOK! It says "optional" but all his lectures are on the quizes, miterms and finals!. 8 quizes (2 lowest scores get dropped), 2 misterms (1 low score gets dropped), and a final that is 40%. He has a thick irish accent so i recommend to always sit in the front seats, but easy!
class is not mandatory. lecture is boring and all the slides are online, just memorize them and u will do well on the exams. Take him! he drops one of the midterms and 2 quizzes, final is 40%
He knows his stuff, and the material is straight forward. The midterm, final, and quizes cover all the material and there are reviews before them. He allows you to drop 1 midterm, and 2 quizes, plus no HW. Boring lecture but you do learn. I do recommend. :)
Some of his quizzes are hard but thankfully he drops two of the lowest scores. The midterm and final is easy since it is all m/c and straight off from the Slides. No need to attend since he posts all the material you need on the slides
it was very east to obtain a good grade in his class. everything is based on his notes, so its not really necessary to buy the book. there are quizzes, 2 midterms, and one final. as long as you review for the quizzes and tests, you should do great.
Very fun class you just have to review a lot because if you don't you will fall behind.
He's the worst professor ever. He curves the class severely because everyone fails.Must attend class to do "TOP HAT" that you must pay $20 for and if you dont get service in class your screwed. He gives no study Guides. 2 midterms, 1 final, worst midterm dropped. Weekly quizes you must study for and study hard because their trick questions.
Other GEO classes are harder then this one, however this class still requires a lot of studying for weekly quizes in discussion,TOP HAT pop quizes in class, 2 midterms, and the final. If your not on top of the class weekly you will fail. He gives no study guides and the TA's are useless. Hard but I recommend it instead of other hard GEO classes.
Professor Love gives great lectures and the course is well structured and organized. He lets you know what you have to do to get a decent grade. Not easy but not that difficult either if you keep on top of the slides.
He can be intimidating if he is in a bad mood but he is helpful and humorous more often than not.
One of the best instructors at UCR.
A really interesting class and he knows his stuff inside out. Lots of slide material to study though he makes connections well between different parts of the course.
Not an easy A class. If you want to do well you've got to study a lot. Study his slides and memorize the terminology. Attendance is not mandatory since he posts his slides online, but you should go to class because he gives pop quizzes on TopHat (which costs $20). Lectures are long and boring. Book is not necessary at all. Hard weekly quizes.
Good chance of an A if you keep up with the course. He knows a lot about the subject and Earth history.
Professor Love is not very personable, however he does offer 1 midterm drop as well as 2 quiz drops. Everything in this class is pure memorization.
Prof. Love is a good instructor and lets you know what you have to do to get a good grade. Can't ask for more than that for a huge class.
His lectures are online and you really don't need to go to class. He has this thing called Tophat which is basically a clicker. So don't miss class if you need help on the questions. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. All of his test are based on his slides. He uses the same tests and never changes them so ask someone for it. Drops two quizzes and one midterm.
Professor Gordon is a great lecturer. This class will be hard if you do not study. There is a lot of material to go over and you will need to put time and effort into it. 2 midterms & he drops the lower score. Also drops lowest quiz score. Be prepared to study, study, study!
Professor Love is a great instructor. Lots of slide material but if you attend the lectures then he makes it clear what the most important material is to study.
Be prepared and know the slide material and you can get a comfortable A.
Professor Love is a good instructor and funny.
Ehh. Not a fan of this professor. He posts his lecture slides online, but I think everything is scattered & not properly organized. I learned better by reading the textbook. You have 8 quizzes, but only your best 6 make up 30% of your grade, 2 midterms(drops the lower one) is 25%, final 40%, & 5% is tophat for clicker questions during lecture
If you don't show up to lecture you'll miss the pop quizzes which account for about 5% of your grade. On the bright side the app he uses works even if you're not in class so just read the textbook, his slides, and be aware of the pop quizzes and you'll do fine. Plus the way he explains the material is super easy to understand.
He is rude and doesn't care about his students succeeding. This class is way too hard for a breadth course. His lectures are disorganized and have wayyyy too many slides. He gives no study guides so for the final you have to study about 1000 slides total well even though the final is like 50 questions. He's the worst.
Took this as a BREADTH class and found it to be pretty easy. Lectures are not mandatory as he posts the slides online, but does use Top hat in lectures which does account for 5% of your grade. Grading scale is not typical, you only need an 85% to get an A in the class and a 60% to pass.
Professor Loves grading criteria is EXTREMELY fair. He drops your lowest midterm and two of your lowest quizzes. His lecture notes are a bit unorganized, but it wasnt that hard to organize it myself. The material itself is not that hard if you study. His class requires effort, but that should be the standard for a college class anyway.
Definitely go to class for clicker questions. He is a good professor and will round up only if you are at the edge. A lot of information in this class and definitely learned a lot from this class. There are weekly quizzes so you must study. But definitely would recommend taking this class.
He was a good professor because he had passion for what he talked about but his class was a lot of memorization
If you're like me and you hate science, I would recommend you to take this class. It's pretty straightforward, you have to memorize a lot of information on his slides but it's all duable (don't buy book). Do good on the quizzes as it can make a difference between C/B, plus they'll help you for the midterms and final. Overall, the class isn't so bad
If you're like me & don't like science, this class might not be for you. Weekly quizzes, 2 midterms (lowest dropped), and a final. The textbook is "mandatory" but don't buy it. Attendance is done through TopHat; slides are posted online but the material is better understood if you show up. Class requires a lot of effort, in my opinion
If you do not like Geology, this class is not for you. His lectures were dense and completely unorganized. The weekly quizzes in discussion were horrible and honestly, you can find a better class to meet the breadth requirement. He basically reminded me why I hate science so much.
I'm not even a science major and I loved his class! He's incredibly knowledgable in his field. His grading is pretty nice. Not many professors will drop your lowest midterm and 2 of your lowest quizzes. There was even a set curve. As long as you put in effort, an A is definitely possible. His quizzes were especially useful in terms of test prep!
Class: slides posted online; going to class reinforces ideas, but a bit lecture heavy Midterm: lowest dropped Final: cummulative; review midterm and quizzes Tophat: makes or breaks grade so be sure to attend class regularly Discussion: quiz almost every class period
PROS: Love is a great professor, he posts his lectures and does things in class to keep the engagement alive like TopHat. I took this my first quarter of college in the fall in 2017. Nice bloke and interesting class. CONS: A LOT of MEMORIZATION. Get ready to read and memorize a myriad of terms. Section is very important, quizzes every week.
I really can't believe hes forcing students to buy a textbook. Literally we are in the middle of a pandemic. It signals an insistence of lack of compassion and neglect for the regards of students who are struggling to eat. Please be aware of this professor. If you want a professor who caters to to bookstores revenue, choose him.
If I had to take this class again, I would he is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the material. All his exams are based on his slide material, there is a lot of memorization but the class is fairly easy. Make sure to go to the discussions, the weekly quizzes really do help prep for midterms.
Professor Love only grades quizzes, midterms, and a final that are open book. There are two midterms but he only takes your best score and he drops two of your worst quiz scores. This class wasn't difficult, especially because he provides you with the lecture slides and videos.
He was a great professor, he put effort into his lectures and was super nice. The class was easy overall since it was only based on lecture slides. Everything is open book. He takes best 6 out 8 quizzes and drops one of the midterms too. The Final was hard as each lecture had over 50 slides.
For an entry level elective course its a little more than you should expect. Since I took it online the lectures werent great. He just reads off them (and at too fast a pace to take proper notes) and doesnt require attendance so I just taught myself. No extra credit.
Overall great professor. Everything straightforward. Attendance not mandatory but he doesn't like it if little people show up. Read the slides and it'll be easy.
Great lectures, but not essential but he mostly just reading off the slides. Can be a tough GE. The professor now takes attendance through TopHat, so keep that in mind. I prefer studying at home, but if you're into ocean topics, it's a fascinating class. The quizzes and homework are pretty easy. Lowkey, GREAT grading system.
Not that much work, just pay attention during lectures and submit things on time and you'll pass, Great guy
As long as you go to his lectures, pay attention, and do the homework, you will be fine. Lecture slides are available outside of class, but you should really go in-person to get a better explanation/understanding of it. His lectures are based off the textbook chapters but you don't need to buy it. Concise, funny speaker, and overall, a chill guy.
Professor Love is a good professor however, he is lecture-heavy and test-heavy. His grading system is really nice, though. This class is unnecessarily a lot for a GE. The final at this time is cumulative, so you do have to memorize EVERYTHING from beginning to end lectures. Overall, a good professor, but there is a lot to memorize.
super sweet and generous professor. drops your two lowest quizzes, two lowest homeworks, and the lowest midterm. lecture not mandatory after you get 10 participation points. he even made it so that a grade of 91+ was an A+. quite a bit of slides to memorize, but just a bit of studying will get you a good grade in the class.
He honestly is pretty easy and lets students know what will be on the test but just listen and show up to lectures to get easy points for participation. He gives explanations and usually tests you on basic things on lectures not too into depth detailed stuff. Overall great professor.
This class was boring, paying attention was hard as he goes over like 100+ slides full of information. Theres a lot to remember and sometimes it gets tiring. No cheat sheets at all.Attendence is somewhat mandatory as there is a code given to answer in class questions. If you're not majoring anything related to the ocean I would not take this class.
