He is just a temp, but I think Langara should give him a perm position. He is helpful, knows what he is talking about, and actually has a sense of humour which really does liven things up. Actually he is one of the best instructors I have had in two years here.
Gordon is a really smart guy, but, he is disorganized. He's very learned in cultural gendering; he's sarcastic and funny...but his disorganization makes you stressed and leaves you scrambling at the end. Too much work! Go to class! Lecture = more helpful than text. He expects an insane amount of reading from it. Would be a better/great grad prof.
I did not enjoy this class, nor would I recommend this prof. He was disorganized, difficult to follow, expected too much in too short a time, left major projects to the last, was not helpful in answering my after-class questions, etc. This was a first-year class and he did not do a good job in directing it.
Nice guy, which makes you feel bad for hating him as much as you want to. He is excruciatingly disorganized. You will be incredibly frustrated, confused, and uninspired in his class. He's is funny and nice, but that just doesn't cut it. Easy marks though, not sure where he pulls them from...
INCREDIBLY DISORGANIZED. missing papers, late marking, messy office, etc. Tangent central in class. Class of 70 and some days only 20 attend. Magoo, cheesy, rather awkward, but he will make you smile sometimes. Gives you ALL detail you need. If you review slides, memorize them, and follow instructions, it's an A class. He is open to discussion.
Amazing class! I agree he was a bit disorganized, but it was his first time teaching at Langara. Awesome prof :D There was a lot of reading, but manageable. Interesting topics and project. A lot of discussions in class. He's really helpful during office hours as well and will give you some hints as to whats on the test. Overall experience: GREAT!
i loved his class! having no prior knowledge with Cultural Anthropology before, i had no idea what i was in for. Roe's lectures are so thorough, i barely read the textbook ( reviewed before exams) His exams aren't easy, but he preps the class so well beforehand that they're a breeze. A helpful & genuinely nice guy, i'm taking anthro again with him!
Wow, what is with all of these bad reviews? I loved Roe! He is so helpful, so interesting, so nice! He preps the hell outta you before the exam, so if you do poorly, it's your own fault. Seriously, he gives you the questions to study beforehand! How can you complain? I got an A+ and I am not brilliant by any means. Recommend, recommend, recommend!
Really nice guy, lectures kind of go on and on, but he explains things well, and also posts all his notes online. Exams come straight out the textbooks (where his notes also are from) so if you study hard, you'll pass no problem. Research essay for the end of semester was so-so. Overall, good prof!
He is a really nice guy, he really prepares you before every exam, his caring and smiles,I liked his class!
Very nice guy, really passionate about the course and what he does. If you study what he provides you, you will do well. It's a little boring but very insightful. Learned a lot! LOVED HIS COURSE. One of my favourite profs, hands down.
Gordon's classes are not easy but if you have an interest in the subject and you put in effort you can easily achieve a good grade. He is a lovely man who loves teaching and he is wonderful at it.I only wish I could take more classes with him. :)
Gordon is a great person as well as a great instructor. He is a very kind person and makes a large effort in keeping the class interested in lectures. If you are taking this course, I did enjoy it with Gordon and his exams are very fair!
Class is really easy and his marking standards are low. I got an A- with little effort. He has some good stories but his lectures are boring and he goes through the slides way too quickly. I learned better when reading the text/slides at home. He's a nice guy and very helpful though.
He's a nice guy, his exams are decently easy if you're going to put the effort in. He prepared you for them so it's even better. Only problem is everything seems to be due at the last minute and is a bit disorganized. Other than that, I'm taking him again for another class 'cause he's good at what he does and is entertaining!
I liked him, he was funny, interesting and made me want to learn more about anthropology. His tests messed with your brain because he does a lot of true and false and the answer is almost always true. In this course he gives out the slides he teaches off of on-line which was good. I recommend him, just pay attention like you should be in class
I liked him, he was funny nice and helpful. Because of this prof I have decided to go into Anthropology. His class is worth taking, but be prepared to work hard and study hard.
an awesome teacher. I just love him!!
BEST. INSTRUCTOR. EVER. Do the readings and you will do fine. His tests are kind of difficult with the MC, but he lets you know what the exam will be like.
Gordon is good at what he does, but I found him a bit fast. He loads you with material and his exams are relatively hard. If you are up for a challenge he is the man.
I LOVE Gordon, very funny, engaging and made me want to learn and do well in his class. Reading and definition memorization is tedious, but if you read the text and memorize the definitions he said will be on the test, you will do fine on exams. the knowledge i learned in the class gave me a different perspective on the world, awesome prof
Loved taking anthropology 1120 with Roe! Easy to get good marks as long as you work and hand in assignments. Make sure you don't skip out on lectures, they can be as helpful as the textbooks and I found them interesting. Studying was also not that stressful cause he would tell us what would be on tests beforehand. TAKE HIS CLASS! :)
He's a great teacher. He goes a little fast but always willing to go over things in class or during office hours. His exams are tough but you'll do okay if you study hard. He's fair in marking with assignments as well. He was my favourite prof during the semester!
You have to read the textbook to pass the M/C, and he gives you the terms you have to memorize. His class is not mandatory but he gives attendance marks. There's five assignments, there not that hard to do. I liked him.
This was a demanding course because of the amount of work and reading. The teacher is fun and refreshing.
The assignments are marked without good reason or justice.
The course is much learned on my own then being in the class.
Weekly quizzes in class not for marks but each one is worth 1% for attendance. 5 Review Assignments which he marks extremely harshly. Exams are non cumulative (thank god) and are multiple choice and definitions which are killer. Boring lectures but does post all notes online which you can print out and take his verbal notes down on.
He's good teacher but watch out for the paper at the end of the semester. I didn't know how to format my sources MLA and it ruined me. In class, tells funny stories, and even though he's a little grumpish, he's a pretty cool guy. In ANTH 1120 he teaches from slides but his other anthropology courses are horrible because he just lectures, no slides.
Really intelligent and engaging. Has done a lot of work with DTES residents which likely has given him a healthy perspective on things. I did okay in this class but I worked hard for it. You definitely have to be interested and spend a good amount of time considering the content. Lecture is more pertinent than his slides, I found.
He manages to make an interesting subject utterly boring, goes off on long tangents about his field work in the lower east side of Vancouver and his daughters. Loves to mention that he won't mark papers if he's drinking over the weekend... Uploads presentation on D2L, surprise quizzes on previous lecture - really an attendance quiz.
This guy remind s me of Jean Luc Picard. Dr. Roe is a dedicated instructor that puts in a lot of time. He tries to be funny, and some of the time he is. He is smart (which is more than I can say for the students in this class) and tries to make his lectures interesting. Signed me into the class when other instructors would not.
He's a pretty rude fellow. First day of class and he's shown himself to be an offensive, arrogant, and short-tempered person. Not surprising since I've heard so many complaints about him. Wouldn't recommend.
This prof is frustrating to say the least. He was unclear during lectures (and after when asked for explanations/clarification), he is lazy - at least half the questions for his tests came from sample questions in the textbook companion website - he blames students for being uninterested and puts zero effort into his lectures. Avoid at all costs!
Gordon is an expert in Anthro! His sense of humour might not be for everyone. I happen to love him though, and the bad reviews just seem to be coming from the lazy students. He makes the material really interesting, and genuinely wants you to do well. If you're willing to study and pay attention you shouldn't have a problem. Solid/funny/bright guy!
His classes are really interesting as he has so much knowledge on what he teaches. He has a great sense of humour and is very helpful if you every have questions outside of class time. You could probably slide by on just his lectures, but he includes a lot of material from the textbook on tests so be sure to read it. He is highly recommended!
Gordon was a great instructor. His work outside of teaching is inspirational. The textbook is heavily relied on, along with some handouts or online sources. Lots of papers, gives good feedback.
Terrible prof who was not prepared for class lecture and/or material. Weird sense of humor and really awkward! Just knew after one class that this would be a terrible class.
I don't remember what I got for 1120 so I threw down a B. Pretty easy to get a B in this class so long as you put in some effort. I don't know why people on this site criticize him for being offensive or arrogant. He's actually really nice and considerate. He's really knowledgeable and believe it or not that's super beneficial to have in a prof.
If you dont have great memory and cant regurgitate vocab definitions. Dont bother with this guy
I enjoyed Gordon as a prof. I find him hilarious. The course work was heavy, but he was open to a suggestion of lightening the work, so hopefully that will be applied for future classes. The textbook is a MUST as he teaches entirely from it, so going to class isn't necessary though very helpful as he goes further into depth plus its interesting!
Really nice guy! He gives out lots of easy marks. The essays aren't very difficult but the Exams require quite a bit of studying. The text book is needed and make sure to read it carefully, exam questions can have very specific details from the readings. There is a lot of vocabulary so stock up on flash cards. Overall Great Prof, He's a great guy!
Gordon is a funny guy. I really enjoyed his mythology class. He gives clear instructions and good feedback. His expectations are laid out and thoroughly explained. He's very relaxed and approachable. I learned a lot about the use of theory from him. Taking another class with him next term just because I enjoyed his class so much.
GORDOOOOO! He's great. Funny. Knows what he's talking about. Easy to understand. Kind of awkward, but in a quirky way. I've taken 2 classes with him and he always seems to mark my essays at 100%. Just follow his criteria, which is very clearly laid out, and you'll get an A. Approach him if you don't understand, he's a nice guy.
Great Professor, would definitely take his class again!!! Anth 1120 consisted of 3 short article review essays (easy to get 100%, just follow his criteria), 2 midterms and 1 final (not cumulative). His midterms are straightforward, he wants to make sure you know the information. Know your chapter vocabulary, this was a life saver!!!
a relatively easy gpa booster. criteria for papers + exams are clear and the review sessions/sheets were helpful. nicely organized powerpoints. can easily pass exams just by memorizing the answers for the exam sheets. pretty friendly and funny guy, gives breaks during lectures
He was the worst professor Ive had over my 4 years at Langara. Im currently taking this class online but Im going to drop it because he has not updated anything for over a month and is now packing the rest of the course into a month because he has fallen behind. Absolutely ridiculous and very unprofessional.
Terrible organization- went MIA for over a month. Rarely responds to emails, if he does they are rude responses, like you are bothering him. Difficult to get a hold of, since the phone provided does not answer and has no answering machine. Unprofessional, disorganized, and RUDE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Seriously.
A good grader.
Review sessions are helpful in mid terms and hilarious professor. you can easily get A if you attend his lectures.
I really like Gordon as a person, and he is very knowledgable about his field. He has some great stories when he shares things from his own work. The class itself is kind of boring material wise but that can't really be helped. Not hard to get a decent mark if you do the work but Gordon is kind of disorganized and unclear so we had a few hiccups.
I found him to be a really enjoyable prof. His lectures can be boring but he's funny which makes up for it and I loved listening to his field work stories. For tests he gives you the list of definitions and short answers he's going to choose a few from. Easy grader for the papers too. As long as you take notes and study the sheet easy mark.
Took his online course and he went totally MIA after the first month .. missed his own deadlines to post our paper topics and wouldnt even update or acknowledge this until almost a week later.. took OVER a month to mark our first assignment. Treated the class like it was a part time hobby that he lost interest in.
He is hilarious and makes every lecture a treat. The class had 4 small assignments which were probably the most difficult part of the class. He gives a clear list of questions that can be on the exam making an easy A as long as you look them up in the book.
Gordon is the best prof for Anthro! I was worried as I haven't had any knowledge on anthropology going in the course, but he made it easy for everyone to learn! He takes questions and elaborates to help you understand! Would def reccomend him and would take him again for sure!
Other then the papers, the content of the course was not to challenging. Dr. Roe on the other hand, I found to be very challenging to deal with. "I like to watch students squirm" is what he said when assigning a midterm and a paper due in the same week. Good luck
Takes so long to do anything Takes forever to get back to emails Cant properly mark 3 assignments 3 tests Come to class for attendance Marks
His lectures were very entertaining and in general he has a good sense of humour. I really enjoyed his course and the work was never overwhelming. While he could be a bit disorganized he never let it affect the class. He was also very kind and was usually very open to questions. He was a really fun teacher to have.
He hasn't been able to get his act together. He's missed 3 weeks of loading our online classes & gives us 4 days to complete them. Then quiz! This week, 2 days (instead of the week we'd normally get) to study & do the quiz. Tests are worded strangely so difficult to understand & there is BARELY any communication as to what is going on. HORRIBLE!!
Roe is one of my favourite profs in the Langara Anthropology Department. I've taken his classes a few times now. Very funny guy, good stories, and his lecture notes are well written. I have found him to be very approachable outside of class. One flaw he has is that he can be disorganized with getting assignments graded on time.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had. Does not clarify the main objective of the assignment and then proceeds to mark you based of the poor instructions he provided. Very rude feedbacks and not encouraging at all. Makes students wait because he DOES NOT upload lecture slides/materials on time. Do not waste your time taking his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. No word of a lie it took him 10 weeks to grade our first assignment and his lectures were just voice over powerpoints no zoom classes. Despite having such few assignments becuase he takes so long he still grades them as if the class was in person. which is not fair at all since the gap in lecture quality is so big
super confusing assignments, Gordon doesn't have the ability to explain things properly - same with the TA. 'lectures' were just PowerPoint slides with the occasional voice-over and honestly not very helpful at all. he still hasn't graded things from the beginning of the course and we're over halfway through now, I don't recommend him.
The assignments were straightforward, but the mltpl-choice quiz questions oftentimes vague and confusing. He did not add much with his lectures, basically just had to read the course book. Hardly any additional resources. I think it would have been better in person. He seems to struggle with the online system. If he answers, he gives solid feedback
Gordon might have been a good lecturer, however as an asynchronous course this was definitely not his forte. I was given vague feedback for the assignments. Said that something was improper citation, I compared it to one that didn't have that mark and couldn't tell the difference. He uses APA6 style so be wary of that. Assignment criteria is vague.
Gordon is a tough prof to have online. He is incredibly vague about what he's looking for regarding assignments and quizzes. He complains each lecture that "it's too early" at 10 am for the only 1hr lecture per week that he scheduled for that time. He'll note how he's incoherent/not making sense, and then do nothing to fix it. Not a good clarifier.
I was excited to take ANTH1170 and was very disappointed. Perhaps the class doesn't translate well online, but I felt as though the content was completely overwhelming. If you're not familiar with mythology I would not recommend this class. He also shamed a student for being late to the zoom when they clicked the wrong link (an honest mistake)
The content of this class is fascinating but Gordon has a really lazy and unprofessional approach to teaching. For our midterm study guide he literally just copy pasted a list of vaguely related terms from the internet which actually made studying harder. Lectures are just him repeating the text book word for word, and Gordon can be condescending.
Gordon seems like he doesn't care. He complains about being too tired in the beginning of lectures, but literally all he does is repeat a few key points from the text book. All you do in this class is read like 70 pages per week. Gordon seems to like he's trying to put in as little effort as possible. The text book is our professor in this class.
Gordon consistently makes big mistakes that affect marks. They clearly come from being careless. He gave us 450 terms/concepts to learn from 17 chapters (270 pages) for our midterm and then after finishing it, we students found a ton of mistakes on the exam. Still waiting for him to adjust marks for his mistakes on quiz one and now the midterm too.
My worst exp at Langara so far. Not engaging, uploads PPs that are basically his notes from the text, assigns textbook pages also. "Tutorial" is mandatory, adds nothing to the material, he seems to enjoy the sound of his own voice. Doesn't answer emails, sets answers up incorrectly in quizzes/exams. This little effort prof life must be nice for him
This professor should try to find motivation to come to class before he asks the same of his students. Often dismissed early and left with ambiguous questions which can also be found in the plethora of multiple choice quizzes & exams.
Terrible prof. Super misogynistic and somehow turned everything into a gender issue. He also referred to homosexuality as a mental illness multiple times. On top of that, he never responds to emails unless it benefits him, obviously didnt care about the class, and started the course off with I love to see my students squirm. Do not take.
Professor seemed unmotivated to explain further from what his teaching were but some how had no problem just talking about nonsense. Lots of essays where you had to explain you point of view and why you are right, they he would review your essay and explain to you why your opinion was wrong or just tell you he straight up does agree with you.
Roe does not provide clear marking criteria, used the wrong textbook for our class and wouldnt change the marks afterwards. He will not respond to emails and marks using his opinion, not fact.
This teacher was my absolute favourite teacher of the term. He is the funniest guy around and even made jokes in the middle of the final exam when I had a question. I would recommend any of his classes to anyone around and as long as you show up, do your readings, do your papers, you'll be fine!
Gordon is very right wing. He has been racist towards indigenous, Chinese and Indian students. He says white people are in minority and makes class uncomfortable for us asian students do not recommend him you can self study from slides and material otherwise
Reading the textbook in this class is mandatory. His lectures are good at summarizing and breaking down information. Attendance is typically not mandatory as you are assigned to read textbook chapters on your own time. Gordon Roe uses brightspace for quizzes and assignments. However, he makes class slightly more enjoyable with his jokes.
I ignored poor ratings of this professor and it bit me in the behind!! Vague writing criteria and hard to find information on myths and folklore that are not European/Judeo-Christian in nature. This class really stressed me out. The textbook is dense although I found readings to be optional. Nice prof but not a good instructor imo
There would be a quiz every week online for every recent chapter. Most of the content comes from the textbook as Roe regurgitates the content in the slides. The only new information comes from in-class films. The research essays are relatively easy, but the rest of the testing comes from memory-based quizzes and exams. He sometimes cracks jokes.
He was obviously not the greatest with Brightspace, and projects were drastically delayed which was frustrating. Online lectures aren't engaging. I recommend taking his on-campus courses instead of online. Criteria for projects are also vague but allow for deeper analysis, so pick your poison.
Amazing lectures from this instructor, honestly the best lectures I've had. There was three papers, three exams, and weekly short quizzes. Incredibly interesting course content, and if you try your best you'll do fine.
Terrible Professor, vague marking, and marking criteria. Very disorganized, boring PowerPoint slides, not a video presentation. Kind of forgets that he is teaching a class, and out of nowhere, quizzes pop and are due on the same day he announces them. Quite sarcastic (not in a funny way)
Always sick without proper notification ! Tones of quizes, papers, exams.
He had a rude attitude because someone sat beside me during a test because they came late. The lectures are not engaging at all, and the only time its useful to come to class is when he puts on a film. You're better off reading the textbook on your own.
Rude attitude, Disorganized, Does not provide clear criteria, Often gives quizzes and assignments within the same day its due. He claimed he was trying something new with the course curriculum the semester I took his course and all he did was assign reading from the textbook. He also never responds to his email when students had questions.
Disappointing.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not teach anything; his class is so confusing, he is a bad grader, and he does not respond to emails or clarify anything. Please do yourself a favour and don't take his class because you will regret it.
Please do yourself a favour and don't take his class. He does not care about students and does not want you to succeed or improve. He stressed me out so much that I almost had a mental breakdown
Gordon for me is not the worst prof I've had and DEFINITELY not the best. His lectures are boring for most of the time, and he makes terrible jokes to the class. Bad sarcastic jokes, and feels like a direct attack on some students. His materials aren't the best either, tends to read from the ppt every time. If u wanna learn, just choose other profs
