Helps to clarify somewhat complicated material, very helpful in and out of class.
He is really good for explaining concepts in full but I find that I never have enough time to finish his exams. Good prof!
Best stats prof that there is. Just awesome!!
Good Stuff
Best stats prof so make sure to get him. Stats have been my highest marks in Uni, I had a 100% going into both finals but he adds a few tricky questions on the finals. Its open book so just take good notes and you should be good to go. He's a little scary to approach, but helpful when you do.
Gordon did fairly well, considering the crappy subject matter he had to teach (i.e., stats). He's alright, but I've heard that Dave Scott is a better Prof for PSY 233 and 234. Fairly easy marker, but be prepared to move quickly through the finals, as you may not finish in time (I didn't, anyway).
all you need is good notes and regular attendance and a 90 should be easily attained...i liked him aside from the fact that his tests were only 8 questions long
he has awesome notes that are very clear
Sarty provides very good notes.
Gave excellent notes! Explained everything with great detail so you caught on easily. Exams sucked because they consisted of like 10 multiple choice questions.
Sarty's a very good prof. Exams would be tough, except they're open book. If you can work quickly and keep your notes in order, you're golden. Homework is minimal. Attendance isn't mandatory but I'd advise against skipping a day. Also: What textbook? Copy the charts from the one in the library and save some money.
He actually made a class that had the potential to be horrible (stats) worth going to. He is helpful, friendly, and teaches the information without making it confusing. He wants you to get a good mark and if you go his class and hand in the assignments you don't even have to study for his exams.
Good prof, He gives very thorough notes. No need to buy the textbook. Copy the needed charts from friend or book in library! his exams are tough. you don't have much time, they are open book, but you don't have much time to finish! otherwise a good prof!
Class notes are all you need. Exams were easy, but time was a factor. Final exam had many questions from the assignments (bring those to the final) answers to assignments are found in the lab manual.
Excellent. I can't do math for the life of me, and I was shocked to see how well I did.
He is an awesome professor! He explains everything super thoroughly and gives good examples.. Tests are open book and easy if you go to class and do the assignments.. dont buy the textbook though!!
Decent prof. He comes of as intimidating, but it is actually really helpful and easy to talk to.
Damn, can you say "open book final"? sweet. so easy to understand, and if you don't get it, just ask, and it will all be clear. a stats guru for the non-mathlete in us all. i say "statistics, wha?"...got a 95. yeah, it's like that. go to class, take notes, write out the formulas, and you're golden.
Amazing prof. He's helpful you approach him with questions. Textbook isn't needed. Open book exams and final.
He is a great prof he does have some bazaar points of view that he makes. He will help you if you ask so ask for help.
By far, the best proff i've had in my university career! Very down to earth, and enjoyable!
A little intimidating at first because he's cynical to the bone, but with time you realize he's actually funny as hell. Attendance is very much mandatory - but if you do the (very short) assignments and write out the formulas, you'll ace it no matter how bad at math you think you are. It's like copying and pasting an entire class. Very good prof!
If you are good at math, you will get 100 in this class. If you are not, well, you're****-outta-luck. Sarty provides almost no additional clarification and rushes through material. Don't expect any comments or advice for improvement on any assignments - just a mark. If you are intimidated by math, you will leave even more intimidated. Bad. Very.
Good prof, writes good notes but you have to go to class to get them and understand them. Everything is open book which is good. He rushes through stuff at the end and the lab T.A.s are brutal but otherwise is a good class
Great Notes. He writes them all out and thy are all you need to do most of the assignments. He doesn't go into too much detail on how to do the computer stuff which would help. He is intimidating at first. Don't miss class, don't be afraid to ask questions. Tests are open book, but super tough. Time can be a problem. Be prepared.
BEST STATS PROFESSOR HANDS DOWN!!! He gave crystal clear notes and the exams were open book. As long as you attend the class and do your assignments by yourself without cheating, you can get a 90+ in this class!
Fairly awesome guy; made a mandatory stats class not unbearable.
Awesome professor. Notes were crystal clear. You will not find a better stats professor.
Couldn't ask for a better prof.I am terrible with numbers and I hate math, and I still did well in this class. He makes sure everyone is on the same page and his notes are easy to follow.Questions on exams are already familiar, plus it's open book.I would like to see more help with SPSS as most of the TAs were useless and didn't know what to do.
Great prof. Makes the class super easy. As long as you pay attention you can get 90+ in the class.
Good professor, keeps it simple so that you can understand it. Can't ever meet with him to ask questions which is annoying. DOn't need the textbook really at all and can definitely go by with an old version. Tests were fair but all Multiple choice which makes it tough for stats.
He doesn't care at all about you as an individual student, he's only concerned about the average. That said, his class is predictable, with crystal clear lectures, and his exams are extremely easy to do well on if you know what you are doing and have organized notes.
Gordon Sarty is so well prepared and smarter than everyone in class, and he is a looker!!!!
Too smart to be teaching stats class to us Uni students, but I really like him, so cute!
Sarty was perfect to sit through, class flew by, and he is very patient with students. I thought he was great and mmmmm.
Sarty is one of the best stats teachers I've ever had. His lectures are crystal clear and his tests are fair. If you go to class and do the homework I don't see how you couldn't get a 90+ in the class.
I feel like he hates his job. Always seemed impatient and irritated by his students. But he is a very smart guy and understands stats inside and out. Don't bother buying the textbooks for his stats classes, or else share with a friend to save costs. Everything you need to know he will give you in your notes.
easily the worst prof ive ever had. doesnt care about his job or his students. never answers emails, is sarcastic and sassy to students and thinks he is above teaching a second year psych stats class.
He is very ignorant when it comes to helping individual students. He writes and talks super fast so you better pay CONSIDERABLE attention in class. The textbook only helps if you need extra example or exercises.
Ugh. He definitely knows his stuff and presents it in a decent way, but he is way too smug to teach a bunch of psych kids math. Pretty unreachable and unapproachable. The class itself is pretty watered down and not too bad, but I feel like he hates his job.
His lecture notes are very clear if you focus all your attention on them. He is not helpful whatsoever. Do not miss a class. Know how to use the formulas (inside-out) and you will do very good! Also, the homework is an easy mark. So, do the work!
I want to say he could stand to be more interested in his job, but then, he teaches stats - to social science majors. I'm sure we could stand to be more interested, too. I did get an air of apathy from him, but he gives perfect notes and the exams are open book. What more can one ask for? There's free math help in the Murray library if you need it.
Dr. Sarty knows this material inside and out. He gives excellent notes and walks you through all the steps. All you need to do is practice, and his assignments are good for that. Textbook is used minimally, but helps to explain some background that he doesn't have time to go through in class. I'm not a math person, but I enjoyed this class!
Exams are long, but easily doable if you know your stuff. I enjoyed his dry sense of humour, and very approachable if you go to see him in his office or during labs. Lots of material covered but easy enough if you practice. I'm not a math person and I ended up with 97% just by doing my assignments and reading my notes - easy if you aren't lazy!
If you attend all the classes you will have no problem with this class, Gordon Sarty knows this material inside and out. the lectures are easy to follow along and he gives many hints to what he will be putting on the final.
Awesome prof. He knows his work so well and gives extremely useful notes and worked examples. His dry humour adds some entertainment to an otherwise inevitably boring class. Assignments - somewhat easy, great practice - and exams - straight forward, open book, but you still better know your work.
He knows his stuff but doesn't seem to have much interest in his student. Acts like too he is too good to be teaching a bunch of 2nd psych students.
Decent Prof with helpful notes but I get the feeling he feels he is above teaching stats to psych kids and maybe he is overqualified.I find his midterms are frustrating in that it is difficult to finish all the questions in time but during the final you have ample time. Organize your notes and focus on the assignments and you should do well!
Didn't like him last term in PSY 233 but he all of a sudden became one of the best profs I've ever had for PSY 234. He makes stats easy, keeps everything very organized and occasionally takes time before a class to get feedback from students to see how things are working and what could be changed. He usually sides with students over TA's.
You basically have to go to class to do well. All tests were open book, so having good notes was key. He's pretty clear in what he expects so if you pay attention you can do well in this class. Would definitely take another stats class from him.
I am definitely not a numbers person at all but I found that he was really clear with his examples and lectures which made things a lot easier. He is very straightforward and doesnt try and trick you. I do not find that he felt that he was "too good" to be teaching the class as others have said. It is an open book class. Boom
Very fair tests He writes out very clear notes with a lot of examples that are on the exams in his lectures. But you must attend class to do well since all tests are open book. Labs aren't mandatory but I recommend to go for the extra practice since the questions on the assignments are basically the same on the tests.
Exams are exactly like the assignments so it is reccomended that you do them because tests are open book. I didn't find his notes very clear or helpful during exams and final was much harder compaired to midterms.
Ridiculously hard class, but his notes are great. Pay attention and you'll be able to squeak through.
I thought Sarty was absolutely hilarious. He had a very dry sense of humour and the jokes made the lectures a little more bearable. This class was extremely difficult for someone who is not math oriented, but as long as you work hard you will be fine.
Kudos to the prof for hanging in there to teach a sea of despondent faces in Stats 233. I was terrified about taking stats but the prof is really clear in explaining the various formulas. His dry sense of humor helps too! Be prepared to practice to do well (use the Bluman text for extra questions).
I was worried about stats since I was not math oriented by any means. However, he made lectures very clear and how to solve questions. Do not be afraid of the class. The midterms are like the assignments but the final was a bit more difficult. He will grade you in your benefit.
He's funny, which makes taking stats bearable. He made a free online textbook for students, but it is a little confusing so I bought the Bluman textbook anyways. Labs are not mandatory but he gives hints about questions on midterms during them. All tests are open book, questions on exams are not as clear as in class examples.
My dread of taking these courses was relieved by this prof. He provided a structured environment where you have to care, work hard, and go to class to do well (ideal for university). If you know his examples, the formulas, and how to manipulate them, you will do well. Work your psych magic and learn to love stats ppl! It will save you later on.
He's a good prof but doesn't take you seriously. Thinks he is too good for everyone.
Sarty is a smarty. Obviously overqualified for his job; be thankful you even get to hear him speak if you are a psych pleb like me.
Prof. Sarty was amazingly scary and helpful all at once. You have to pay attention and do the homework - if a math-avoider like me can get Stats then anyone can. His notes are perfect so write every single thing he puts on the blackboard. His examples are essential for tests/exams. The online text is basically a repetition of his notes, but good
I was actually really scared for this stats class but it wasn't bad at all. Prof is a little dry and the lectures are long (cause i had them tues/thurs) but you need to go to class for notes cause tests are open book. His notes are decent, they have lots of examples but you basically have to constantly be writing to keep up. Notes aren't posted.
The biggest problem with this class is that the examples and assignments are far too different than the midterm and exam questions. It is NOT an easy class for people who aren't strong in math. Even if you study extensively, the questions on the exams are so different they can easily confuse. Prof is not approachable either.
Prof. Sarty was good in the sense that he explained the material well. Psy 233 is a tough course, but I was able to follow it because of how well he knew the material. Completely unhelpful Prof, directly said he would delete our emails without reading them. Was unwilling to make arrangements for students registered with DSS.
Open book class, no electronic note taking, he copies the online textbook for the lectures in a confusing way
Great prof besides the fact that he does no believe in technology. All notes must be hand written and there is no way to contact him besides talking with him after class. He clearly understands what he is teaching and explains it very well. The midterms were a lot easier then the final was. Do the assignments even though they are optional, it helps
Gordon can come across as snarky a lot of the time, but regardless, the guy knows the material well and does a decent job explaining it. Assignments are out every week or two that you SHOULD complete. All notes are hand written, so go to class! Stats can seem scary, but I hadn't taken any math related courses in 4 years and I did okay in the end.
I found him to be quite a great prof. He was very educated on the topic. I went into that class with a huge fear of stats, and came out with an understanding and respect for it. I am excited for my next class with him. You HAVE to go to his class though. Does not post notes, and no electronics. ALL HAND WRITTEN!!!!
Make sure you attend every class, he does not post notes. No laptops allowed either. Being said, his notes are AMAZING. Use them for the assignments and the test will be straightforward. Don't buy SPSS, you can easily get by without it. His tests are very similar to the assignments so make sure you do them! Decent prof all around.
This class ended up going MUCH better than expected. I expected to barely scrape by in this class, but did better than I thought. He doesn't allow technology so everything is handwritten, and there are no notes posted. HOWEVER, there is no textbook needed to be purchased, as it is online and it is basically a copy of his notes.
He gives all his notes in class (they are the only material you need to do well in the class) so attend lectures! Midterms were a breeze but the final was actually terrible. The class average was high so he gave a hard final to tank it. Do all assignments and you should be ok. Also, he doesn't allow computers so bring your pen and paper to class
Sarty is decently funny and knows the material well. Doesn't allow laptops and handwrites his notes in class, but copy down everything he writes exactly and you'll do great. My main complaint is that he is unavailable for help outside of class time. Gave a hard final to drop the class average (I had 100% prior) but otherwise his tests are very fair
I started the year off afraid of stats, but Sarty made it bearable. You had to attend lectures because he does not post notes online. Also, he goes over SPSS outputs in class which you need to know for exams. Overall, his midterms were not hard, but his finals were harder. If you attend class, take good notes and do the assignments you'll do well.
Obviously a super smart guy but so smug it makes your skin crawl. Extremely strict in terms of tests, assignment due dates and cell phone/laptop use in class. He's tough but fair and if you put in the work, go to class and do the assignments then you'll do fine. Get help at the math/stats help centre for the stuff that stumps you.
not a good prof
so smug; not a good prof
His lectures were so boring and confusing I don't know how much I actually got out of them. His tests aren't too bad but very few questions so be careful. Redeeming quality is that his textbook was free and online and actually makes sense so read that and you'll be fine. I wouldn't take a class with him again if I didn't have to.
You can learn everything off of the textbook with this class, but attendance is highly recommended. He will also weigh his final either a 70% or 40% depending on how well you did compared to your mid-terms
Horrendous educator who clearly teaches classes to facilitate his research. No respect for students or the material and always puts forward bare minimum to assist students. The only saving grace is the free textbook, even then YouTube educates better than that. Avoid this teacher if at all possible.
I had Gordon two semesters in a row. They were the longest semesters ever. Rushes through material, incredibly smug, and impatient. Do the assignments. Dont do the SPSS Qs on them though, just pay attention to the tables he shows in class and make sure you understand them. Make your own formula sheet. Overall, avoid but if you are stuck good luck
Teaches his material in the most robotic, mindless way possible. Very smug and condescending to all students , so good luck if you are weak at math - he will make you feel dumb for asking anything.
Came out of Psy 233 with a grade of 80, felt confident going into the second stats class. Wrong. Barely passed the class and when I reached out for help and told him I was struggling, he told me to try youtube or google. Will not provide help outside of the textbook and modules. Terrible teaching methods.
Some people hate sarty, but I love the guy. He has little patience for stupidity and doesn't care to make friends. However, I learned infinitely more in this class than I did in 233. Midterms are only 2 or 3 main questions, each composed of a couple of multiple-choice steps (10 marks total). Open book midterms with questions from the assignments.
This course was an in person course however, you could do extremely well if you just read the textbook because its the content he goes through during in class lectures. The midterms are the same format as the assignments and there isn't too much content to go through.
He was overall great. Though his final was harder than his midterms,It was still fair. The assignments are really good practice for the exams. If asked he will often tell you what material will not be on the exam. Only thing is it isnot clear on his syllabus how exam deferral works as he doesnot allow rewrites.
He does not provide lecture videos so all the learning in the class is by textbook or notes that aren't even all correct. When you ask him for help or ask for resources, he says that there is nothing he can do and what you see is what you get.
Professor Sarty is rather talented in making the material seem much more complicated than it is. It is shocking that I could find a 2-minute video on YouTube explaining the material perfectly as opposed to his highly long-winded teaching that is explained poorly, with a refusal to try and explain it any differently. Do the assignments, it will help
This professor was pretty decent for a statistics class. I found that his presentation of the content was straight forward and well explained. He is not accessible outside of class. All of the tests were open book. Cannot use technology in class or in tests for open book. His tests were reasonable but difficult. Overall a decent professor.
Not bad overall but made to feel stupid when I asked a question. Doesn't answer emails and admits he doesn't answer them. Flies through material, hard to keep up.
not accessible outside of class, doesn't answer emails, got an 8/10 on his own midterm. that's all.
Open book midterms and final. Do the assignments and you'll be prepared. Midterms are designed so you wont have enough time to finish them if you dont know what youre doing, that being said, take good notes and do the assignments over and over. Decent prof but moves very quickly - between writing notes and comprehending it is rather hard and quick.
If you take good notes during class and don't ask stupid, self-explanatory questions, you'll be fine. The assignments are very similar to the test. Do the assignments multiple times each and make sure you can complete them in a timely manner. However, he's inaccessible outside of class and his explanations can sometimes be confusing.
Mean, condescending, believes teaching the class is below him, and will repeatedly tell you that.
Professor S is a snotty old crank and I like that crank a lot tbh. Hes old fashioned and stuck in his ways, no computers allowed and he wont accept emails for a lot of questions and etc. He wouldn't even give contact info for AES students if they had issues during exams. But hes funny and gives a solid lecture. I think he hates people
The worse professor I have had in my three years of school. He doesn't care about the students and think they are lower then him. He doesn't answer emails and calls students stupid when they ask questions. Isn't clear about assignments or instruction. Just the worst at his job
Quite rude and not understanding. Gordon should not be a professor. He has been condescending particularly to students in complex situations like those with disability and those in surgery. I have to just learn from the textbook because I could not stand the disdainful energy that he creates. Try to take this class with Osama Batineh.
Does not take emails, despite being rude and unapproachable. Does not leave contact info for AES exams. Fosters a hostile classroom. He literally told us on the last class that we cant email him with questions on the upcoming final exam. Like what does he expect us to do when you are lost during studying ? Why is he a professor?
If you can avoid him, do so! Rude and so condescending. Not willing to adapt to how different things are in regard to students that require AES or other forms of help. He should not be a professor. His classroom is uncomfortable and he has his favourites. So become a favourite or avoid him. Good luck if you can't.
Despite majority of reviews, Dr. Sarty is a solid prof! No he does not baby you, but nor should he. I find the tests super easy to do well on, especially with them being extremely similar to assignments and open book. Take advantage of math and stats help and the assignments and these classes are far less intimidating than made out to be.
Gordon is a solid guy. So long as you attend classes regularly and take effective notes, you'll be good. He's a pretty blunt and honest prof, but if you're not fooling around during class you have nothing to worry about. He's also hilarious if you have a decent sense of humour. Notes and lectures are easy to follow.
Is he arrogant? For sure! If you are looking for a best friend Professor Sarty is not the prof for you. Honestly the only people who have a problem with him are those who don't show up/try and don't have a sense of humor (obviously you are going to do bad). Show up, take notes, and you will do fine. His tests are incredibly fair.
His exams were incredibly easy if you do the assigned work. However, he is awful at explaining concepts and frequently insults students for not understanding. I only did well because I taught myself- his lectures and labs were useless. He is not available outside of class, but does grade quickly and can be somewhat accommodating.
There's no way this guy likes people tbh. You can't ask him any questions through email during an online exam, and he often doesn't proofread his own answer keys or his own answers on exams. I'm not saying he's the worst prof of all time, bc he's not- but he's definitely not the best either.
Easy class, prof is rude and passive aggressive. I haven't even emailed him personally, but shaming other students via announcement and refusing to provide any help is definitely not prof material. Guy is tenured and angry.
Taking this as an online class, and I recommend that nobody take PSY233 online with him.Textbook explains things with such complex language that Idk what's being explained. Exams feature questions that aren't similar to anything we get "taught". No zoom meetings or office hours, so everything that u learn is from ur best interpretation of the texts
Open book exams, if you just try the assignment he would give you full marks. However he was very condescending and would only respond to emails with one word responses. He also called the entire class “ignorant” for emailing him questions during a midterm. If you keep your head down and work hard you'll be okay.
Not only is he the worst teacher I've ever met but the way he does his tests is the worst possible way to assess math skills and knowledge. He is also a huge asshole. In one class he told us, without anyone asking about them: “those SLEQs don't really matter, I don't look at them anyway. I have tenure, I don't care.” That's a real verbatim quote
Challenging class as it is entirely self taught. Expectations were not clearly communicated and led to issues between prof and class. Overall did not find him to be the most personable, prepare to tackle this class on your own without relying on prof assistance.
He is generally rude. The class was only available online, however, I have heard he was a bit more personable in person but even then he is warm or above threatening students. He will deduct marks if he suspects copying from the answer key, even if you didn't you cannot argue the marking without him threatening to deduct marks from past assignments
He is a horrible prof, he doesn't have any clear communication, there's no lectures, zoom meetings, or any office hours. You're teaching yourself from notes and the textbook. Make sure to double and triple check every single answer because god forbid his answer key is actually correct.
He is very hard to communicate with over email. his responses are very short and not very clear. however i will say i've had him in person too and communicating with him in person was way easier. i as well also found his teaching style and notes to be very helpful for me personally. The grading curve is probably the worst part.
Gordon Sarty is the rudest professor I have ever encountered. He does not care to help, show you where you went wrong, or help you do better for next time. No office hours, recorded lectures, or Zoom meetings - the whole class is you reading documents and auto-graded exams. Not to mention, my grade went down 5% after the final curve.
Enrolling in a class under this prof is like giving a crook free money. You're on your own, bud. You need the grade? The credit? Expect the lowest. Curves DOWN your grade, responds to every email in the worst way possible, and hates students.
Doesn't respond to emails/messages, and if he does, they are rude and condescending. Accuses people of using the answer sheet to cheat on assignments if the answers look too similar. Cruves grades very unfairly, not sure if it's even possible to get over a 90 in his class. Sucks that this class is a requirement for many people.
I think in the entirety of my university experience, I have never felt so unsatisfied with a course. There are no recorded lectures, the textbook is written by the professor with not enough practice questions, along with confusing SPSS Modules. If you have ANY CHOICE, do not take this as an online course as you'll have to teach yourself everything.
