Very intelligent, good teacher!
GREAT! Intelligent, funny, helpful
witty
Very intelligent teacher, very accomodating my death in family, funny/interest.
best course ever!
A good time to take a nap in between cynicism
Very funny, very intelligent. Curses a lot.
Impossible amount of reading unless you neglect all your other classes and activities. Also he does not teach in an organized way at all, often digresses for 30 or 40 minutes at a time. Sometimes interesting but not very educational.
Arrogant toward students with differring opinions...not a good attitude for an intro course into politics (shapes student's minds by presenting his own opinions as facts).
Random tangents often distract him, expects all to do the reading, but it's rarely done. Sometimes difficult to stay focused on his lesson.

Great professor. Very funny, and very opinionated!
Keeps things interresting and knows you won't do the reading. Really funny and a nice guy. Take him with a grain of salt.

nobody ever does the reading, he doesn't care. great guy
I don't know if he's still around as of this year, but if you see a class by him, TAKE IT.

His lectures were generally unrelated to the reading, but were fascinating. he is a great speaker with interesting things to say. the reading for the course itself was a bit brutal, but the lectures are worth it
He rules, reading is optional.
I had the idea to write a play about a college student who realizes he was a Jewish Rabbi in a previous life. I think I would like to have Schochet do the voice-over. Very long winded tangents, but they're fun. If you're serious and focused, look elsewher
wow this guy is a complete idiot- he is a biggot and thinks he is gods gift to the world- He is a dirty horny old man who likes to talk about his sexual fantasies instead of actual class stuff
This guy is by far the most intelligent person I've ever met in my life. If I could only have half of his brain!! Very very caring, generous man...will work with you as much as you'd like. I couldn't recommend him enough.
He really is a great professor, I can't stress that enough, but what can be very intimidating are the Shockettes, his fan club of seven or so students who follow him around. It's hard to deal with him one on one. Otherwise recomended.
A really weird guy. A ton of reading for an intro class...needs to stop obsessing with Rosseau. Crazy tangents.
Likes to rant about South Park, the Simpsons, and how much he hates George Bush. Very strange man. He may think that's it's actually open mike night when he lectures. You can pass the course without going to a single lecture if you do most of the reading
Lots of reading, long winded tangents during the lectures, hard to follow, but very bright man. "The Handmaiden's Tale" was the best book in the course
GREAT PROFESSOR - He's very real and down to earth--makes the connection between practice and theory.
I love that man.
Schochet is the greatest teacher at the whole university. The only reason I am still at Rutgers is because I had the privilege to have him as a professor when I was considering transferring.
He is great! Everyone should have him at least once before graduating.
Such a good professor; he's exactly what I dreamt college teachers would be like.Witty and clever, he's such a smart ass, but he's cool as hell.Sometimes he rants off topic, and it can be boring, but it's still a bangin' course to take. Schochet is all mighty!!!
Don't listen to the positive reviews! Schochet is grating, extremely boring, and frequently goes on tangents which have nothing to do with the material. You will HATE this class.
I honestly was hoodwinked by these reviews. There is not a single thing good about this 373 class other than the fact that it consists of only a midterm (which is relatively easy) and a hard final essay. He digresses for 40% of the class, ritually comes late, and has very difficult readings. :-(
Pretty easy class b/c the grade is two papers. But I hated going to lectures. There was no point b/c he just told stories. We spent 20 mintues on the actual material. Even though it was easy, it was a waste of my time.
Read and outline important ideas of the books and it's an easy 'A'. Also, it helps if you don't have a crazy recitation teacher who loves Rousseau. Schochet is worth showing up for, but not worth leaving early for, if you know what I mean.
He's funny, mean to the students, and insulting--therefore, I enjoyed his class.
Ugly, fat, mean, and insulting...Loves his cat or cats and that yellow sports coat he always wears. Odd man, recitation is worth the while
HORRIBLE. Lectures are stories and have nothing to do with readings, students read 10 books for an intro class, and although midterm and final are takehome, they are difficult because they are long essays and it is all based on theory of the readings which he dosent review or analyze in class. AWFUL
never talks on topic. gets pretty annoying after a while. lots of reading. the only help you can get in the class is from the TAs. Take home midterm and final, but again, his lectures won't be ANY help. lectures = waste of time.
Schochet is wonderfully human and makes a genuine attempt to reach out to students. Yes, his lectures can be difficult to follow (though, IMO, not as difficult as some say), but I believe that his willingness to go the extra mile for students balances that out.
Alot of people have been bashing on Schochet but I found him to be incredibly amusing. Good guy, willing to help out his students as much as he can. Really knows his material. Although his lectures do run off topic he's still one of the best prof I've ever had. Witty, smart, and helpful.
Don't bother.
his lectures often went off course, but he was amusing and helpful.
Had him for one class and found him so enthralling that i had to go back for seconds. With the passing of Carey McWilliams probably the smartest professor in the department. Lectures are often tangent-laden but they generally link to the material. Great guy who will help any student with any problem
Positive ratings are LYING! DO not take.
Spectacular professor and class. Do not take if you do not like to read difficult texts; if so, jump in.
hard class with hard material. he tells class half way through semester that they consider this the hardest class in the poli sci dept. very theoretical politics involved. hes a good professor (does get side tracked. its funny stuff usually). his final grade was much more lenient than i deserved (b+
Grimey. Talks way to much about barely relavent bs and not enough about the texts. Loads of reading. Genius. Knows way too much about Hobbes. Doesn't know how to communicate his vast knowledge so he just talk about obscure details of texts that interest himself. Latin is a dead language. Nuff said.
Massive amounts of reading. midterm in class and take home final. do some of the reading and you will be fine. goes off and talks about anything he feels. overall had him 2 classes and not too bad
Awesome teacher! His lectures are all over the place but he's a brilliant professor who likes to talk about pretty much everything. If you do the reading and talk to him if you have concerns he's extremely understanding. Definitely a no- joke class, but if you work hard, you'll do well
He's a great teacher. What you need to get out of the class is how to apply the theories learned onto a modern issue. If you can do that and write it in an essay you'll do great.
Excellent.
This man is an entertainer/professor. If you have no problem reading through books (oftentimes difficult ones), then take his courses because the experience is great. He expects that you do your readings and when you come to class the discussions, though usually distantly, relate to the subject at hand. He's one of those prof's you won't forget.
Don't take either of his classes if you aren't willing to read and understand the readings yourself. He knows *so* much that he literally incapable of communicating his knowledge coherently. That being said, I learned a hell of a lot. Just be prepared for several students who will worship the ground he walks on.
He's an awesome guy! Never talked to him but he knew me out of a lecture of 300 people. Really intelligent and tells interesting stories. You really can't take good notes but if you listen you'll be fine. He's got good TAs and class is pretty fun!

This man is a genius. He knows his subject, and he knows it well. His lectures are always fun and entertaining, but he does go off onto tangents. His tangents are always fun, occasionally eeducational. If you truly want to do nothing but learn in lecture, you won't like the tangents. He polarizes and challenges your beliefs. The last reviewer criticized Schochet's approach to religion--he only used it as an example to clarify his points. If you are offended, you are probably very religious (not a moderate). He will insult what hold true and dear to your heart, get over it.
Entertaining at first but by the end of the semester his "humor" gets old. Plays up to the shock factor. Incredibly smart but has a hard time communicating basic ideas and principles. Goes off on tangents. Don't have to go to lecture but recitation is a MUST. Learned a LOT about politics & he really sparked my interest in the subject. He gets an A.
I have such an intellectual crush on this man. He's really great if you're willing to read and do the work. I agree that he's far from the most organized lecturer ever, but I've learned a ton from him. He's helpful, caring, and he loves his job-- and that always shows.
This guy might go off on a couple tangents, but when he gets back to business his mind is fierce. I do not know if I learned more or if I was inspired more.
Best Professor ever! He knows the material inside out and really knows how to explain it. Two take home exams. If u pay attention in class it will definitely help u with the exams. Highly Recommended! Don't take this course with anyone else!
An amazing professor. Greatly cares about his students, and positively challenges classes beliefs in otherwise excepted standards. Not the most organized lecturer but i dont think that is the point of class; Schochet is more of a thought provoker rather than a spoon feeder of facts. Great exp. learned a lot. Made me decide to major in poly sci.
I was very interested in taking this class..until I went to class. This guy is pretentious and very opinionated, and his humor gets old really quick. He acts as if he's numero uno, plays favorites, and makes fun of others instead of intelligently critiquing them. Has a tendency to cross the line, i.e. regarding Christianity. I slept in EVERY class.
Nature of politics (theory - ahhh), is tolerable with Schochet. He's sort of funny (not THAT funny guys - calm down) and sarcastic, so class is not just some**** reading from their notes. This class solely dependson your TA though, because they do the grading.
Professor Schochet was an interesting fellow. If you are a conservative, you most definitely won't like him. Overall, his lectures were interesting. He goes off on a lot of tangents. Sometimes they tie into the reading and sometimes they don't. Overall, pretty good class. Very interesting if you are a poli sci major.
Had Gordon for Nature of politics. One of the most pompous professors i've had at Rutgers. Don't go to the lectures, just the recitation, the TAs grade everything and schocket does essentially nothing. Easy A, midterm and final are take home papers. Don't buy the books or read them either until you recieve the prompts for the essay.
Lecture for nature of politics. while he does say some brilliant things and is a nice man, he is very smug and arrogant which makes his lectures hard to sit through. he is also repetitive. youre TA determines your grade
Western Tradition...lecture is helpful especially if you fall behind on readings because there is a ton of reading. If you can go to class and so a little reading once in a while you should have no problem getting at least a B. Hes also a nice guy but a little too conceded about his intelligence.
Western Tradition class was quite good. Learned a lot that I hadn't known before, and he engaged the students, to the point where by the end of the year, many students were participating because the topics were so controversial. Very helpful and does everything he can to get you a good grade. I'd highly recommend him.
First class at RU, what a force..tangents, yes but funny. If you have an attention span longer then ten seconds you should do well. Participate and read and befriend your TA.
Schochet's lectures are not mandatory...in fact skip a few to catch up on reading. If you do the reading and put in ample time for the exams, then you will ace this course. Schechet is fun to listen to most of the time.
Lectures are useless. He doens't take attendance. He doesn't say anything of much value. Recitation is a must. Attendance is taken. Exams are easy (take home papers). Got an A on the midterm paper, written the night before.
Schochet is very insightful, but be ready for irrelevant tangents. Keep up with the reading and you'll do fine. A clever man and one that you should hear at least once. Only 2 assignments based on readings and topics of discussion.
Lectures are a ramble, No attendance...Tons of reading, but exams are easy. Several kids worship him as a God which is pretty annoying...I would only take this if you are a poli sci major.
Depending on lecture it can be interesting & funny or just a complete bore Usually hes very blunt & maybe sometimes too judgmental but quite amusing esp when he goes completely off the subject. there's a lot of reading, 2 take home exams based on the books. recitation may be mandatory depending on your TA, but lectures are not.
As a political conservative, my first impression of the (extremely) liberal Schochet was far from positive. However once I approached him I found him to be very interesting and open minded. I recommend him to anyone, from any political spectrum. Even though I don't agree with his views, its great to hear them sometimes.
Arrogant...not easy to listen to...easy class
Nature of Politics is so boring. Everything he says is opinionated. The only work you do is a midterm and final paper, but the final requires two 5 page papers in a week. Thats the only hard part of the course. I never go to the lectures, and the recitation TAs are insane too. Take this class if your into bullcrap that doesnt make sense. i hate it.
Nature of Politics is the worst class ever. Its so borin and Schochet is out of is mind. The TAs are all insane too. You only have to do a midterm and final paper, but the final consists of two 5 page essays in a week. Don't go to the lectures. Everything is a big joke, its all opinionated. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. and if you have to, dont go.

this guy is incoherent boring and very mean his class should be cake if only the TA didnt grade your papers based on your opinions because of him i have lost all interest in poli sci wat so ever
Think he knows everything but really doesnt...The lectures are useless. As long as u go to the recitation and befriend sparknotes ull get an A
There's a solid dozen who will sit right in front of him and worship the ground he walks on. The rest are indifferent or can't stand the guy. Prepare for a running monologue on his unrelated views on everything. Try to arrange a study group to split up the readings for the two exams. Not a lick of work until the night (or week) before the exams.
funny in the beginning. got more boring as time went on. NO NEED TO SHOW TO LECTURE. basically, you do nothing until the essay comes. essays are hard and confusing to understand. BEFRIEND TA-THEY GIVE YOU YOUR GRADE
Going to lectures was a complete waste of time, but you must go to recitation. A lot of reading especially for an intro course. Definately not an easy A considering the grade is based on two papers and attendance at recitation. I got a B because my opinion wasn't the same as my TA's. Probably would not recommend.
Lectures definitely were a waste of time- I think I went to three total. Schochet is wild, sometimes hilarious, and extremely bright, but he rambles constantly and usually has nothing constructive to teach. My TA, Amy Buzby, was FAR better than him (I went to every recitation). I got a B+ on the class, primarily cause I can write well.
Tries to be overly shocking and it comes off as arrogance. Don't need to attend the lectures, but if you have any interest in poli sci, you should do the readings.
He's great. Although you might not agree with what he has to say, he makes valid points. Your grade revolves around papers, so unless you're good at writing, don't take the class. He mentions pretty much everything in class, so it isn't that hard if you listen. He's funny, and a bit insane in a good way. He's a refreshing teacher.
He is an interesting man and most of the time he has some good things to say, but lecture is pointless. You learn more in recitation. There's a midterm essay and final essay. You must know how to think and write in order to get a decent grade. My TA, Amy Buzby was so smart and really helpful.
Hilarious lecturer who knows what he's talking about and takes a huge interest in it. Sometimes he can drone, but always a laugh. Go to discussion, attendance counts. Go to lectures to, because it'll DEFINITELY help you to write the mid-term and final essays (both take-home). Make sure you read.
Prof Schochet is a different kind of lecturer. He likes to socialize with his students and really opens up to the class. He enjoys offending ppl with his racey comments...but thinks his does it to get students to react. Lecutures suck 90% of the time...recitation is a must! Read and you'll do just fine..
Interesting class. It definitely makes you think outside the box. There is no need to attend lecture if you go to your recitation. Easy A if you understand the readings and if you can write a decent paper.
I took Nature of Politics and Western Tradition with him. He really grew on me. He's brilliant, although some say he is arrogant, he is not. He really, truly cares about his students. Do your reading (not necessarily on time), attend class, and keep an open mind. Write like an intelligent student, and you will get an A.
You don't need to attend his classes, as you receive nothing useful from his class. You'll enjoy his teaching if you don't like to think for yourself and are a mindless "sheeple". Your time is better spent with the TA's.
took him for nature of politics. i was really interested in the lectures at first because i love the subject and he was funny and sarcastic but after a while i stopped showing up to lecture which made no difference bc i still got an a.grade is based on 2 papers that the ta grades.go to recitation because you can get all your arguments from there
He's a good professor and a funny guy. He keeps his lectures interesting with anecdotes and his knowledge of the material is obvious
took him for nature of politics my freshman year. he's a funny guy and going to lecture isn't a complete waste since u can use it to copy down his arguements, but definetly go to your TA sections. grade is based on a 5-7 page mid term and two 4-6 page papers for final. papers based on readings from several books. easy class.
I took him for Western Tradition Hobbes-Mill. He was extremely helpful, very funny and very very intelligent. If you ask a question, he'll answer it, and then some. Probably my favorite professor at Rutgers!
Very Liberal, but knowledgeable, as he doesn't ignore the conservative branch outright. He's entertaining, but he's also a very nice man when you approach him. There seems to be a love him/hate him idea floating around. Essays are a bit hard, but passable, and if you go to him for help, he clarifies anything you need. LOTS OF READING
Hottest professor at Rutgers. Also a genius. Love.
He's a very entertaining professor, very knowledgeable and doesn't ignore either side of an argument. He does run on tangents, but if you pay attention it's not that bad. Almost everything in the essays he mentions in class. I would suggest taking a class with him.
Gordon is the most deeply committed scholar I have ever known. Outside of his son, the Baltimore Orioles, and things I don't know about, his greatest passion is British Thought. That passion has made him the subject's greatest expert. You will be fortunate to hear just one of his lectures. - Allan Torrey
