Mr. Shumard is an absolutely terrible teacher. He has a heart of gold and is a great person, but he just fell into the wrong profession. When you ask for help, his is not clear at all. Smart man, but can't translate his knowledge to your understanding.
Mr. Shumard is a nice guy. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
Most freshmen don't like him because they don't want to learn, they just want to skate. You can't skate with this guy, but he has patience to explain everything you don't understand. I got an A and would have had maybe a C with anyone else.
Gets frustrated easily. Class is fairly easy to pass if you study for tests. Extra credit is given liberally. One group project. Not tested on a lot of material, not much to study. Doesn't take attendance, but you have to show up in hopes of extra cdt
Mr. Shumard is awesome. I enjoyed his class and he is by far my favorite teacher so far. I have had him twice now and have made A's both times. If you have a question, he will not stop trying to explain the process to you until you say ok i understand.
Great teacher
Very nice guy. Gives extra credit just for showing up to class!!! Goes off on tangents; lectures/explanations are kinda hard to follow, but the book explains things clearly. Tells you beforehand EXACTLY what questions are on test. Could use notes on some tests. Overall a very easy class!
He is always willing to help. He understands that math is hard for some people and makes things easy to understand. The class is easy and there is one group project.
he is awesome! he always helped us when we need him and give us the opportunity to get our grades up. i made C's on my first 2 tests and ended up with an A in the course. he even helped me with my speech! he's very reliable! :)
Easy tests, multiple choice
Great class. Mr. Shumard isn't a bad teacher, but he can be a bit sarcastic when he gets frustrated. That makes it kind of difficult to understand explanations sometimes. Extra credit was given for coming to class.
Has difficulty getting problems correct when using coursecompass.com, makes a lot of errors. Has too many questions on most tests, a struggle to finish on time. Nice guy, can get sarcastic when angry. Pushes back homework if needed, has extra credit for attendance, tests are open book.
He can be extremely caustic on occassion. Because of this, I won't take him again. However, he did give points for attendence, open-book tests, and extra credit, so you get every chance of passing his class.
got an A in calc!
If you didnt get an a in this class, your retarded!!
This class is a free A. You get points for attendance, open-book tests, reviews all your homework in class (even though he doesn't know half the problems himself). Will work with you, replaces your lowest test grade. Easy final and if you forget to turn in homework, etc... very helpful. Easy A for M
Really nice caring teacher. Knows his stuff very well. Give 5pts extra credit just for coming to class. you will receive a decent grade if you keep a nice notebook, come to class,& do/study all homework problems. most test questions will be exactly from HW if not, they will only have different #'s
Very easy, if you remember the material from high school. He explains things much harder than they really are. Good attendance policy. Easy tests, lets you use your book on the test. Final is also easy. One group semester project.
too much hw,annoying... went through a problem for 20 minutes before he realized he did it wrong...
If you dont know how to teach yourself, or do not already know the material then do not take this guy. He obviously has ADD because he can't stay one one topic for more than 10 mins. On the bright side if you know how to teach yourself or already know it, then you dont have to bother with going to class.
I hated math and never got any grade better than a C in my entire educational career... Until now. He is thorough, and will spend as much time as you need on a problem until you understand it. I got my first A ever in math with him. Real decent guy.
He is a little confusing when teaching but the material is easy enough to understand without his help. He lets you use your book on test and the final is made up of questions from the previous tests. And he gives a lot of bonus points for attendance. If you get less than an A in this class...you're stupid...
nightmare, don't even bother asking questions since he will never be able to answer. looks like we are the professors and he is a student.
Not an awsome teacher. If you do the homework and study you should do ok. But that applies to any class. Plan on maybe seeing a tutor if you don't already know this stuff. And he doesn't have enough office hours. Overall, rather boring and makes mistakes. I had a really bad T/A also.

open note test, test multiple choice. Problems are easy. You can still get a really good grade if you do good on your final and attend class(10points). Doooo your homework, its an easy A and it counts as a whole test grade
Tests do not clearly reflect taught material. Wouldn't recommend if you haven't taken advanced algebra/trig before. Got so aggravated with him I skipped the last two months of class. Not mandatory attendence although you get bonus for going to class. Nice guy, bad teacher. Although likes to rant on things he doesn't really know about.
Shumard is AWESOME. He lets you make a cheat sheet for the tests, and the final is basically copied and pasted from the 3 other tests in the class. He is always willing to help and go over things if you need to, and he also lets class out at least 20 minutes early. EVERYDAY.
This teacher kicks ass. All tests are multiple choice. Group Project that is very easy if you just put alittle effort into it. I HATE MATH and i came out with a B this is the teacher if you need math
He doesnt even know the material he is teaching! Probably the worst math teacher i have ever had...dont take the class!
Yes the tests are multiple choice but he does not prepare you for the tests. What he goes over in class does not go with anything in the book or what is on the tests. He wants you to just "understand" and not as questions. I emailed him about problems I had in the class and he criticized my stupidy and read the email to the class!!! Total Ass!!
He is the best Math teacher I have ever had. He is so helpful, his test are easy, and he is great! His Final is all of the problems from previous tests and he does not even reword the problems. You are guaranteed to leave the class knowing those problems and confident with your grade.
Easy class. All 4 tests are mulitple choice and open note plus homework on mymathlab counts as a 5th test. Replaces lowest test grade with final, which is copied and pasted from the previous 4 tests. Gives 10 extra points for attendance. Runs through the material quick, make sure you can "teach" yourself. Overall nice guy and easy class.
Grade solely depends on your effort, class is easy but if u dont study then u wont make an A simple as that.
The worst teacher ever! I ended up with a C in this class... the bad thing is that I just finished Pre-Calc MATH 1113 and got an A!! Shumard really should have a job, and all he does is confuse the student who are trying to learn.
If you do the following you will have success in class: come to class, do homework, study. This is an excellent teacher, explains concepts well . Cheat sheets allowed on all the tests except the final. Final grade will be counted twice if it is higher that a test grade. Your homework counts for a test grade. One of the best professors I've ever had.
If you have to take Calculus...then take him. Allows a cheat sheet on test (except on final), test are multiple choice, replaces your lowest test score with the grade from the final (if higher), and uses the questions from previous test. Homework counts as a test grade. So, got to class, do homewrok and study and you should be fine!!

This is a fairly easy class. He uses MyMathLab.com, so if you do the homework on that and use it to study, you'll do fine. He lets you use your notes & book on the tests. He doesn't teach much; you have to learn some things yourself, but he'll answer any and all questions. If you like to skip class, this is the one for you. Just show up for tests.
he made the class more confusing than it actually was. i am horrible at math and he made me more confused than before i knew what to do! he is easy but not very helpful.
Terrible teacher. 2much hw way too much. Doesn't know what he teaches. I don't go to class but I already understand all of it. If you don't know it don't sign up under him unless you are suicidal. Tong Tong (t/a) is retarded but she has memorized 20 numbers of pi. He is also easly distracted by everything always off subject. :(
not bad professor at all.
Stay away from this guy at all costs. I turned in every homework assignment, went to every class, and never failed a test but made a D. He relies on the TA way too much. He loves to ramble on about when he was in college and about his wife rather that teaching you the material he is giving you homework and tests over.
Could not stand his attitude. He makes these jokes to poke fun at you in front of the whole class. Made an A on the final but he wouldn't give me a A because he said I didn't show up to class, when really I missed only one class the whole semester. Ridiculous. Also, did not use textbook at all (which I couldn't sell back!!.
Basically dumbs down e'rything to you. Open book exams & final is a combination of exam 1, 2 & 3. Homework grade substitutes ur lowest test grade, so go for it.
he was a great teacher!! i think he explains pretty good and hes very easy! i didnt like math but now i do!!
Prof Shumard would take the time to answer any question you had but sometimes it wasn't even worth asking because he would talk down to you almost as if you were stupid. I don't think he knows he was doing it but all in all he is a good guy. Study Practice tests and you will get an A.
Overall he is a pretty good teacher. The tests aren't that bad and he takes the time to answer any questions you have. He also teaches why things in math work the way they do (don't know if it's worth it but whatever). He is kind of weird sometimes...and watch out...he's an Auburn fan. Overall pretty easy.
Terrible terrible terrible! Easy A definitly but he is a terrible teacher. When he doesn't know the answer to a question you ask he asks the class over and over again and lectures you about being responsible til someone will come up with a guess...I definitely do not recommend him if you can't learn it on your own.
Mr. Shumard is the greatest math teacher I have had in my college career. This class is such an easy A. You get to use a cheat sheet of all the test (not final). Explains things in great detail. I liked him so well I am taking him next semester for Math 1106.
If you can get pass a teacher covers himself everyday in chaulk, and talks about communist china in the middle of complex numbers, then maybe Id give him a shot. Honestly I thought math 1111, was really a stand up comedy class, because he is ridiculious. we discussed all matters of life in this class.
About as good a teacher as you can get for math. He likes to talk about unimportant things a lot, but it's often entertaining. All homework was online and pretty simple to follow. As far as math goes, I recommend him.
Homework is on My Math Lab. Book not required, but helps a lot if you need extra practice! I'm horrible at Math and found this class somewhat challenging, but very passable. Shumard's entertaining at times, which helps if you hate going to your math class! Would highly recommend!
Math & Life Lessons all in one package. best math teacher at KSU
Bombed my first 2 test, then I got a clue finished with an A. Study the Practice test and you will do great on the test. He is not very helpful on math but a very nice person. Test are straight from Practice Test.
Very easy class. Tests were very straightforward and he is understanding/generous about absences, late homework, answering questions, etc. Easy A if you read the textbook.
He embarasses you when you ask a question... All he does is lecture the class on how the economy is the way it is because of people like us. He spends his entire class going over like literally 3 problems which you do with your other classmate. Tests are ok if you do the study guides. make sure you also watch the videos on the HW website.
This class can be boring because it is math but he can make it somewhat funny with weird comments. Sometimes he lingers on certain problems longer than he should but it helps you learn it. Class isn't mandatory but with 3 tardies or less you get an extra 10 points on your point total. He drops the lowest test grade and replaces it with the final.
If you can't learn his material on your own, don't take him. Also, when you ask a question, he just mas you feel stupid and yells at you, though he encourages questions... The only good thig: his tests are just like his practice tests
He goes on really random tangents, trying to be funny, but in a morning class I was not amused. I didn't care for the class, but he makes it pretty easy. I didn't do the extra credit work he gave at the beginning and failed the first test, but he gives practice tests and replaces the lowest test with the final. He makes the class pretty easy.
Class is not boring, if you actually listen he does give good advice and his random tangents are entertaining. Does not dumb down math. I went to the tutoring lab a lot. i made a B in the class and I suck at math. 3 Tests, 1 Final (final replaces lowest test, so counts twice). TAKE HIM!!
he's crazy and yells at you when you don't understand stuff, but he's a pretty easy grader. Test problems are straight from the practice tests.
TAKE HIM! He gives you practice tests that are just like the actual tests. Dont buy the book b/c all the homework is online. Shumard goes off a lot on life lessons but he is a great and easy grading teacher. If you have good attendance, you get extra credit too. During the summer semester, we had 3 tests and a final and homework online.
If you're like me, and math is your weakness, take Shumard! PreTests Identical to tests, bonus points available, makes it difficult to fail his class!
I don't recommend him. He gets very political and tries to give advice to the young students (he is not there to raise them just to teach math). You have an opportunity for extra credit (ALEX) the worse nightmare and not worth all the trouble, I never studied so much math in one single semester.
I couldn't stand this guy! Very patronizing, his political tangents are annoying and completely biased, and have nothing to do with calculus!
If you're not good at math you NEED to take Shumard. He provides practice tests for calculus that are identical to the tests. I took him for college algebra and calculus. He can be patronizing a lot, but as long as it's not at you it's pretty humorous.
Class consists of 3 tests, a final, and homework(mymathXL). 500 points. IF you dont miss more than 3 classes, its an extra 10 pts to the total. First test, theres NO study guide, class average was a 46. He does replace your lowest with the final. Practice tests for test 2 and 3. Similiar to actual test. Nice, minus the tangents.
He talks about business way too much, he yells a bunch and is almost always off topic. He expects you to know what he is talking about, even when the problems get really tough. I had to work extra hard on all the hw he gives and had to teach a lot of it to myself. Didn't like him.
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. I'm taking his 1102 class becuase he had such good results on this site, but the truth is, he was retired and then came back. He does not stay on topic, gives very poor incomprehensable notes, and expects you to know what hes talking about when he's lecturing. His class is ony worth going to because he gives extra credit for
I am AWFUL at math, and I need a great teacher in order to pass any math class, especially calculus. He does a great job teaching concepts and answering questions if you don't get it the first time. Practice tests are very helpful, and he puts those problems on the test. He is definitely there to make sure you do well in the class.
Good teacher but when you ask questions he makes you feel dumb. Class was not that hard but there is a lot of self teaching because he teaches very fast, and skips steps. If you're not good at math don't take this teacher.
Awesome professor. Goes on lots of rants, but they were typically really funny--but could get annoying. Book is not necessary, but it can be helpful for online homework. Final replaces lowest test score and questions comes directly from first 3 exams (which you keep). Exam 2 and 3 he gives practice exams-which are SIMILAR to the real test.
Great professor. He is difficult to approach but if you ask for help with a problem he will show you step by step, and that really helps. His practice tests are 90-100% the same problems on the actual test. Study these. They are instrumental to receiving a good grade. TAKE HIM.
Professor Shumard is really a good professor. I suck at Math but he did his best to make it clear. The homework assignments are on MathXL and he leaves the assisgnments open all month which is good because you can keep practicing until you get a decent percentage on the HW assignments. The tests are mainly from the practice ch. tests. I took 1111 a
He's okay. He knows his stuff, but he's not the best at teaching it. It was easy for me because a lot of the material was review. If you still have one absence day left (he allows three) he'll give you extra credit. He takes the grade you get on your final and replaces your lowest test grade with it.
Shumard was a funny professor at times and he liked to go on rants a lot. Although you have 3 test grades and the Final replaced your lowest test score. The book sometimes helped with the homwork (math xl), and doing the practice tests at the end of the chapters helped. Hang on to your previous tests to help study for the final. Ask for help if
NOT A GOOD TEACHER. Makes you feel STUPID for asking questions, but doesn't fully explain anything. Does not show examples and tests cover too much too quick. I studied like crazy and was only 3 points away from getting an A, but it was NOT worth it. Really Disappointing class.
Great Professor. He really cares about your success in his class. Study guides will be the key to success in this class. He will go on some short rants, but it will keep you interested in his lecture. Extra credit for missing a limited amount of classes. Homework is online and due at the end of the semester. Failed Calc once then got an "A" in his.
I have been attending his class since August, and 5 minutes ago i withdrew from his class. Horrible teacher, goes off on rants about economy and family for 45-55 minutes and the last 30 minutes he may touch on some math. horrible at explaining problems. just a plain bad teacher. GET OUT.
Nice guy, but he does not do much teaching... or good teaching at least. I have been teaching myself with the book practically since his notes and lessons do not help. He is not organized at all. I do not recommend this teacher for anyone who normally has trouble with math.
he sucks. all he does is yell about marriage and auburn. if you dont like to go to class but still want to get an A, take his.. but if you're not good at math.. find someone else. if you do the homework, you'll get an A. but really, don't take his class.. don't. i like math, and he makes me hate it. good luck paying attention!!
Shumard is nice but not the greatest at explaining calculus. Almost every class you can count on hearing a lectures about irrelevant stuff. If you have to take him you can get a B with class attendance and studying. Study his reviews they are identical to the test!
He is a decent teacher. He basically teaches the bare minimum of what you need to know. Some people might have problems with how he gets off topic periodically in his lectures. But he knows what hes talking about, teaches it, and his tests are extremely easy.
Pretty bad. He teaches you the minimal amount of information that you need to know. A typical day of class will be him going through 1 type of problem, and if you don't get it, that's your own issue. He rants on about his personal life and Auburn too much. He is rude and doesn't care about helping students.
He goes off topic a whole lot and doesn't explain concepts well, but if you study and/or know what you are doing, you can def. get a B, and maybe an A. I would never take him again, though.
Easy class if you do the homework. He does not go over a lot in class and goes off topic a lot. But he is always willing to help if you just ask.
Professor Shumard is the WORST teacher I have ever had. I am decently good at math and he made everything confusing and refused to accept an answer unless you had multiple reasons why its correct. The tests are impossible and the homework has nothing to do with the tests. The good extra credit option is the only reason I got a B.
Worst math teacher ever. Do NOT take him if math is not your strong subject. You'll end up having to teach yourself material. And he's amazingly corny.
If you miss less than 3 classes, you get 10 extra credit points on a test. 3 tests and a final. If you do good on the final, he uses that grade to replace your lowest test grade. my math lab is worth the same as 1 test grade. goes off topic a lot. likes to talk about the military and camping. When he is teaching he makes it easy to understand
WORST PROF EVER!!! If you do not already know this material, do yourself a favor. Get ready to teach yourself and/or hire a tutor. This man STAYS OFF TOPIC for nearly half the class talking about completely irrelevant material. I WANT MY MONEY BACK FOR TUITION! I TAUGHT MYSELF THIS COURSE!
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL! The WORST math teacher I have ever had! He doesn't teach you how to do it, he just stands up there and does the problem and yells at you when you can't do it. If I could go back in time I would drop him in a heartbeat! Unless your already good at math, then don't take him. Oh by the way, the homework is ridiculously hard as well.
Students dislike this professor for the wrong reasons. Yes, he's a little harsh, but very logical and to the point and he knows what he's doing. As long as you do the homework, attend class (good att. gets 10 bonus points) and pay attention, you will do fine especially if you're familiar with algebra. And ALL the tests are multiple choice.
Ok. If you do get stuck taking him, dont sit in the front row, because his normal talking voice is shouting. He really can't teach so I suggest taking advantage of the ATTIC tutoring program the school provides. There really are not many other good options for math teachers at SPSU as of Fall 2011, but if you can, avoid taking Shumard. Hes a joke.
He gets chalk all over himself, he has little knowledge of the subject, but his class was great. If you already understand the subject, or can easily teach yourself take him! Attendance does not count at all, only one homework assignment per week (not every week). All tests completely multiple choice. His personal stories are great!
Honestly not as bad as other people are saying he is. He might go off on a tangent ever once in a while about something unrelated to math, but it doesn't hinder learning. Easy work, multiple choice tests, not bad overall.
Do not get put in his class. You'll fail.
Don't even bother going to class if you get stuck with him because you'll learn more teaching yourself in half the time he does. He yells at the class about testing out of pre-reqs every class period and he obviously thinks every student is stupid because he will always answer students questions with absurd and rude comments.
If you enjoy being belittled by anyone (esp. a professor), this is the right class for you! ;) He's loud and obnoxious! BEWARE: If you have the nerve to ask him questions, be ready to be ridiculed in front of your classmates. :)
This professor is just dreadful. He yells instead of speaking or teaching for that matter, breaks chalk everytime he uses it, goes off about some random ass thing every class. Your better off just staying home and reading the textbook and teaching yourself.
He seems uninterested in teaching, and you don't learn a lot from him. The homework that are due on a certain day are usually from the materials that he hasn't covered yet.Test and finals are easy . I believe making a good grade in his class is not hard. However remember that you don't learn a lot which causes you problem in higher math classes.
Survey of calculus wasn't as bad as I thought it would be with him. He does give homework in the beginning of the semester. Bonus quizzes over short video clips, attendance not mandatory but will help your grade. There is a sign in sheet every class. Study the study guides for each test and you will do great on the exams!
Constantly berated us about how we're all worthless and lazy, often taking up large chunks of class time to rant. Lessons were subpar. I suggest looking for other sources to learn from to compensate. He loves math, but he doesn't care about teaching lower-level math. If you're decent in math, you'll be ok. If not, try another professor.
Terrible teacher. constantly used class time to rant about how stupid and lazy we were as a generation. only does one example per section and often gets distracted with his rabbit trails. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you cant teach yourself.
one of the worst teachers I've ever had. out of 30 people in class 5 would show up because all he would do in class is rant and do 2 problems and be done. you'd be better off teaching outsold than going to class. constantly tells students how awful we are. horrible teacher.
If you can get past his ranting and stories, it's a pretty normal class. Covers what you need to know for the tests (short, multiple choice). If you can do the problems on the homework (which is all due at the end of the year) you won't have an issue with the test. If it's not difficult to you, the class is a breeze. He'll help but not a lot.
His lectures are very confusing. He makes an easy algebra class especially hard. He also doesn't respect the student. Many days he would ramble on about subjects that did not pertain to math or he would treat the class as if they were stupid. He is not helpful when you have a question. Would not recommend.
First off, he does not care about attendance at all, which is great. He tends to rant but they are usually entertaining. Teaches in a hands on type of manner. His status as part time professor hinders outside help, be he tries his darnest as he wants you to pass.
He is terrible, would not recommend. Lectures are very unclear.
Spent way too much time talking about millennials being lazy and just was off topic in general. He's been using the same multiple choice tests for 15years, the first test he gives has had an average in the 60s. He expects students to fail the first test. Even with incredible outside help this class was a pain, I withdrew.
He is a good professor and knows his stuff. He means well and wants to help you learn. Not strict on attendance, it is your choice whether or not you want to attend class. Obviously attending class will help you practice and spend time with the material. If you don't understand, ask. He will go over it again. Take him. Learn. You can earn an A.
Goes off topic, not too much practice in class. We will go over a problem maybe once or twice and were expected to know it for the test a month later. A lot of homework that is due at the end of the semester.
DO NOT take this man if you're not mathematically inclined. I'm not. He goes off on anti-young-people and anti-smartphone rants often, and isn't a good teacher. I failed the first test trying to do the homework as he covered the material in class because he was so far behind by the time it arrived. I passed but was terrified of failing all semester
