He is super cool. I don't like information systems and he made it really fun. He is whitty and very clear in his teaching. I would highly recommend him highly.
He's okay but if you know basic computer systems this class is a bore!!!!
Very unhelpful to the student that have not had him before, i feel very penalized!!!
This was the msot boring and pointless class ever, and the only reason I passed is because I stopped going and read the book on my own. Reading the book is much better than listening to boring lectures.
Gordon is the man, he knows what he's talking about and is so involved in his teachings that it pours over in constant tangents and verbal musings. If you want to learn, take his course, but be prepared to be worked, his classes are NOT easy.
knows his stuff and trys to make students just as smart lots of humor in his class and lots of work
Made the class fun and enlightening. Learned a lot.
Class is difficult. He sometimes gets off on pointless tangents during lecture. Make sure you do the homework to do well on the tests.
So, I went into to get help because I was having a hard time doing well on his tests (eventhough I studied a lot). And I asked him what I could do to improve. And he told me that at the rate I was going I would get a C in the class. I told him that I wanted to do better than a C. And his only response on how I could improve, was to "do better." He is not a good teacher and not willing to help his students improve or understand the material. I would not recommend him at all! And his class is hella
So, I went in to his office to discuss ways to improve my grade, because I was not doing well on his tests. (eventhough I was going to every class, taking notes and reading the book). And he told me that at the rate I was going I would get a C in the class. I told him that I want to do better than average. And his only response was, "well, do better." He his not willing to help his students improve in his class. And his lectures are hella boring. I would not recommend him to anyone!
Took over the summer in 4 weeks so that may explain it but the class was tough. Lots of HW but very little in class practice. Concentrated mostly on Excel which would have been alright if we were in a computer lab and were able to follow along. Not recommended for anyone who did not have a statistics class before.
Good professor. His class is challenging but not unfair. He is very specific about his expectations for tests. Do the homework, read the chapters and don’t fall behind. If you are willing to put in some effort you will do well in class. Has an offbeat sense of humor, but it helps to lighten up the class.
I took a class with him over the summer and I thought the class was really enjoyable. I learned a lot from the class and he has a humorous way of teaching. He is the reason I am a Finance Major.
You must do the work. He's not that hard. He prefers men to women, but is fair overall. DO THE HOMEWORK! Surprise curve at the end!!
Good instructor. The class is difficult for some because Stringer actually expects you put forth some effort and seek to understand the material. Grading is very fair, and he does curve the class. He allows resource sheets for test as well.
I took this class over the sumemr thinking I'd hate it, but now I have this almost dark love for math I never had before. Cool. Just be prepared to study alot. Generally a fun class.
Great Professor! I believe that this class will weed out those who are lazy. I received an A- after averaging 86 on the three exams. Do the homework and ask questions. Buy a financial calculator the semester before hand and learn how to use it before taking this class. Pay attention because the concepts will be useful for the rest of your life.
He's a really good teacher and will always slow down or go back to make sure you get it. Some people just don't get him though.
I took this class over summer and was dreading the math. I really like statistics now. Crazy, but a good teacher can have that effect on you. I got so into it, I tutor stats classes now. Crazy.
I had Stringer for 2 QUAN classes and 3 Finance classes. He knows his stuff, has real experience, pushes students to learn, is available for help, and a nice guy. His finance 305 was one of the major reasons I changed majors. Plus sometimes when he makes certain expressions up on the stage he looks like Michael Keeton in Batman, ha!
Nice guy -- willing to listen and help. Sitting through the class was just difficult because it was straight lecture. Should get students involved -- don't read the PP and homework directly off the prompter.
He gives a hard test but is very intelligent and wants the best for his students.. He is a nice guy, if you go in for office hours he is very helpful and explains the information well!
Made class enjoyable, if you study you will pass, best professor in the college of business.
If you need to take FNCE 305, take it with Stringer. I am terrible at finance and math, but the way the class is structured it is easy to get an A as long as you DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. If you don't do the homework, you will not do well in this class. He also lets students use a 'cheat sheet' on exams. I actually learned a lot in this class.
Great professor if you have to take finance. You can get a good grade and can learn a lot if you do all the homework and stay on top of it. He goes through all the problems in class and shows you how to work them as well as providing all the answers for you when you do the homework. He also lets you use a study sheet for tests which is great!
He lets you use a resource sheet on the final. The homework is all online, which is a great system. He is very helpful. Ideally you should come prepared to class by doing your reading & online homework. Great professor for this...caused me to add finance to my major!
If you are nervous for a finance class you should take it with him. The homework is online and Professoer Stringer goes over almost all the homework in class. The repitition makes the subject easier to understand. If you do the homework and go to class, you will do really well.
Most of learning comes from online myfinancelab. Class can be frustrating, and most of the time you will teach yourself the material. He can ramble on about things that have no relevance to the material- like ipods and iphones. I dont care! I just want to learn. Waste of money and time to be in class-just taught myself.
Very nice guy, but very difficult to follow. Goes off on random tangents all the time. If you already have an interest in finance, and have some understanding, this might be the class for you. But if you are depending on the prof to help you learn, take the online version.
Worst experience ever! His tests are nothing like the home work and the second exam was built for failure.
This class was very difficult, I put a lot of time and effort in though and got an A. His lectures were mostly pointless but the videos online were great! Test were hard but all multiple choice.
The class requires work but he's upfront with it. He tells you what you need to do to pass period. Fair doesn't begin to describe him. He is beyond fair and will help you any way you need! I hate finance. Hate it! That being said, if I had to do it again I wouldn't want a different professor. He is the business.
Best professor in the Business School. Other professors should pay attention to his lecture style, his upfront attitude about the work required and his reasonableness. He went over and above to help the entire class by podcasting his lectures and doing video examples of every homework problem. The tests are hard but doable if you study.
Possibly the best teacher I've had at UCCS. I wish the entire business school utilized the web as much as he does. Despite the so called random tangents, he makes up for it by being readily accessible and by providing thorough video lectures that helped me when I was struggling. I didn't like FNCE before this class, but I'm taking more with Dr. S
Best professor I've had so far. Definitely in the fan club. He was very engaging (and hilarious if you pay close attention) and kept things interesting. Reminds me of Jack Nicholson in both appearance and pentameter. I wish he was teaching UD classes next semester! Hoping to work more closely with him in the future.
The amount of work is excessive, but the amount of resources he provides is steller. He has every in-class activity and lecture complimented online. If you are having difficulty with a problem, he is always available via email.
Great instructor! Strongly recommended, however be forewarned it is a difficult class that requires a lot of study time. But Stringer definitely makes it do-able!
Its hard to follow along with him in class as he tended to get caught up in a single problem and discuss it for a majority of the class then rush through the others once he realizes his rambling. However he posts videos and examples online which were a great help. Lots of busy work but he goes through most of it in class with answers.
Hilarious, makes stats fun. Great guy very smart.
Great teacher! Awesome person and makes statistics enjoyable! Strongly recommend!
One of my favorite teachers.
Professor Stringer is great. However I do not care much for Finance. There is a lot of online homework assignments that you must complete and the tests can be a bit hard at times. If you do not study for the tests and put some time into your resource sheet then you are not going to do well on tests. This class was okay just not my thing.
Professor Stringer is absolutely amazing. His lectures are hilarious (if you get his humor). There is a lot of homework, but it helps to reinforce what you learned in the chapter. Read the chapters, do the homework, study for tests and you will do great! I wish he taught other classes because I love his teaching style.
Do not take this class online. Many students post that he does not really answer questions. Well online you have a student teacher thats even worse. I sent an email asking him about a very specific question and got a response 5 days after the homework was due. Practices tests are a joke, don't match at all with the test maybe 4 of 30 are similar.
Only goes through practice problems during class as his lecture. If you pay attention and constantly work problems, it is easy to understand. A lot of connect homework and practice problems (which are counted as extra credit at the end of the semester). Great professor!
Great professor. I took the one month condensed version of the course and he was very helpful and understanding. Lots of homework though.
Finance is not a strong subject of mine, but he made it as fun as he could. Always available to help, and wants you to pass. Content is still a lot to take in, and tests are not easy ( but you can have a cheat sheet!) If I had to take it again I would only do with him.
He is SO helpful, especially for a math class. You can go to class and he teaches the homework through the lecture, and if you get stuck, he has all his lectures online and you can just rewatch the part you need. He answers emails well. Gave me full credit for a late assignment. He cares that we learn and understands students.
The course overall is not too hard but isn't easy if you slack off. If you do the homework, extra credit, read the book, you will do fine for this class. I also recommend buying the BA 2 plus for this one, you will thank me later. Overall Gordon was great, he's helpful and made sure we understand the material.
A lot of homework and hard exams, but if you stay on top of your assignments and do the extra credit you will do great! He is a great professor and provides very helpful feedback if you ask for help! The only thing I was not a fan of was the exams being video taped.
Do not take this class online! Way harder than in class. Tons of homework with chapters all mixed up and unclear. Tests are very hard, but nice professor who will help you during office hours.
I had heard that the class was hard and that he was not a good teach. The class was rather difficult however, Dr. Stringer cares about the students and puts in the efforts necessary for their (my) success)
group project literally every other day, which is already annoying let alone having the class online and never meeting the group mates in person. easy grader, if you just try you can pretty much get full credit on anything. tests were harder and you cant use the book because all tests are on lockdown browser.
I was terrified of taking a finance class, but Stringer made it so easy. He gives lots of extra credit!! The connect readings and homeworks are an automatic 100% because u get 3 tries with can check your homework. His supplemental videos on Canvas is so helpful. U don't really have to show up to class because he only goes over the extra credit hw
There's a lot of assignments and homework problems, but it's all fairly easy and Professor Stringer gives ample opportunity for extra credit. Watch his online lectures and chapter guides, do the extra credit practice problems, and you'll succeed in his class. Don't be intimidated by the fact that it's a Finance course. He sets you up for success.
Great Prof! It's clear he wants you to succeed. The last few weeks of the semester get a little tough, but he allows you to use notes for online exams. I was scared of this class but, he made it understandable. Plus there's lots of extra credit opportunities. Heads ups, there is a lot of weekly work due and 2 group projects (online).
Professor Stringer is willing to help answer questions you have, but you have a lot of questions that come from teaching yourself the material. There are lectures that cover the material, but not until after the assignments on it are due. Tests are a lot like the BAMs, which is helpful. Prepare to spend several hours on homework.
Stringer is a decent professor and a funny guy. He can ramble quite a bit, but there is usually a point to it. Be prepared for a strong amount of homework and to study pretty heavily outside of class. He lectures based on the material that should have been studied before class.
He aint that bad.
Points system is super messed up, your 3 tests are all over 2,000 points. Uses webcam and lockdown browser and you have to do an INSANE amount of math by hand. Has video that are somewhat helpful, but you are left to figure it out on your own. If you try to email him, you just get an email back telling you to be more specific, like he won't help yo
I have taken two courses with Stringer. His lectures are primarily online and he expects you to show up to class informed and updated. He is not the best lecturer, but he cares about his students and is funny. He makes adjustments to help students out. Most of the learning you do will likely be outside of class on your own.
Very smart guy, but too smart to teach students. Goes off topic easily and teaches all over the place. I only passed because I read a lot, studied as much as possible and taught myself on top of everything. If you're not capable of that, do not take his class. You will easily fail.
This is a very hard class be ready to work for a decent grade. His tests are pretty hard and he makes you use a lock down browser with the camera turned on. He does allow students to use a cheat sheet on the exams. Just pay attention and be ready to work!
It was a tough class! You have to do the work on your own or you won't pass. Do the extra credit work. You can get 50/50 or 100/100 on HW and Chap assignments since you have 3 chances and it let's you check your work before grading. The issue is the video lockdown exams are 2000 points and are super hard. So you need all the other points you can get
Prof. Stringer is a nice guy, but his class is pretty difficult. The exams are each worth 2000 points, making up a considerable portion of the final course grade. He scheduled Zoom class online on a day UCCS was closed for classes on campus. Very nice guy though, and knows what he is talking about.
Prof. Stringer is a great professor. He cares about his students and is in love with finance. He posts his lectures online and uses in-person class to go over homework. His exams are heavily graded but if you understand the homework, you should be fine. He lets you use a resource sheet. Finance is not an easy subject, but he tries his best.
Kupp let's you use a financial calculator at the beginning of the class. Take him.
Professor did not lecture course content- ever. He frequently shows up to lectures and exams late (Does not correct this with added time). Professor lectured personal rants with small touches of course content. He yells very loudly during lectures and is almost threatening. Course shell is a mess and hard to follow. Avoid if possible.
Expect to teach yourself most of the content! It is not much more than a jumbled online class with really no reason to go into the actual classroom. He rarely talks about the formulas and basic principles that lay out the foundation of finance. If you get stuck with this professor just save your time and take the class online
Requires attendance, but never discusses anything relevant. Really likes hearing himself talk.
The worst Professor I had in 3 years at UCCS. His course structure is insanely unorganized and he loves to hear himself talk.
This course is so disorganized, as others have said. There are 500 discussions all going at once. Professor hasn't graded anything in the course but the assignments from the first week. There is absolutely no organization in this course. He made us buy 5 textbooks for $300 and never used them. Highly recommend not taking this course.
Great Prof, passion for the subject. Be prepared to to an average amount of work. 10 times easier if you read the financial news and are actually interested.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Incredibly disorganized, the due date for assignments are always wrong and ever changing. Insanely hyper, but not in a good way. Barely teaches anything, uses slang finance terms (in assignments!!) that aren't taught so good luck figuring out what he's talking about. Can't overstate the volume of homework.
Very easy class. Every chapter, every test has extra credit chances. Attending in-class lectures is pointless and unbearable as he only goes over homework explanations which you can access yourself and rambles about completely irrelevant stories for an hour before even getting to the homework. Sends an ungodly amount of emails and at shameful hours
Dr. Stringer is very knowledgeable but his lectures are boring. He goes off topic so many times its hard to not get lost. I ended up having to just do the homework on my own and figure out how to do most things on my own. He is helpful when you ask questions but sadly the class has to keep him on topic or he will rant for 20-40 minutes.
Do not take his online summer course with any other class. This class is a part time job. Gordon does not answer emails asking for help, refuses to set up virtual meetings, and writes useless study guides. He is unreasonable, time consuming, and disrespectful towards working students. He wasted my money and forced me into an extra semester.
This professor refuses to actually teach the content or make the assignments related to the random crap he talks about. His test are just ripped from the connect assignments he assign which doesn't relate to the stuff he "teaches" at all.
Good luck figuring out what is going on. The announcements and assignment instructions (regarding the due date) don't match the canvas due dates. There is no consistent timing for when anything is due. He will not respond to attempts to contact him, and when he does he confuses who you are and what you are asking about with other emails. INSANE.
Professor Stringer is very knowledgeable about finance, however, it does not translate well into his teachings. I learned far more from the book and homework than I ever did during the lectures, and I attended nearly every 2-hour and 40-minute one. He rambles about nothing and you will find yourself lost at what he's talking about often.
Gordon is not a bad instructor and is knowledgeable, but he is not good at responding to emails. Exams matter, if you score poorly on all the exams your HW score won't be a factor to save grades. The online class is disorganized. Assignments are not in the same module and if not careful you could miss an assignment easily. Not a bad class though.
He is very unprepared and goes on tangents unrelated to the topic. Can be hard to follow because of this at times.
He isn't the worst professor I've had, but he doesn't lecture about finance much, if any. His tests make up your whole grade, so if you fail one you might as well drop the class. Take the online version with him if you have to take him at all.
I won't ever give a good rating to a professor who could care less about his students. Does not answer emails for the life of him i'm convinced he reads them and ignores them. If you take him in person he does not answer questions and is aggressive. If you take him online he just straight up ignores you so best of luck if you have him!
Stringer set up the canvas shell in a way that is easy to follow but otherwise is not very accessible. His lectures are average. MCQs on tests are obscure and impossible to study for, they are also worth just as much as practical questions - good luck.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! None of the module due dates match the syllabus dates. Emailing the TA and the professor was a joke. Their responses said "figure it out" even though the issue was on their end. Did not learn anything of value because I was busy working on group projects and attempting to figure out when things were due.
Summer class. Gordon did not respond to emails, and it took him 3 days to even give us access to canvas (which wasn't updated). The tests are 30 questions but worth 2000 pts. You have to do the extra credit to pass/get a good grade. I couldn't imagine taking this class on top of other classes, so I recommend taking it in the summer.
If you do the hw you will be fine.
Worst professor I have ever had. Took his online class and learned 3 things. He wont answer emails (you need him to check on a HW question? Whelp good luck!) Exams are so weighted that you need a min of 80% on all three to pass (100s on HW wont be your saving grace here). He loves group projects (good luck getting a good group for this!).
I took his online FNCE3050 class, and it wasn't as bad as some of the reviews on here said. It is without a doubt a difficult course, but that had little to do with the professor himself. There are a lot of assignments and quizzes with 2 group projects. Just do all the work and you'll be okay. He gives lots of extra credit too.
He is clearly very knowledgable in finance. There are a lot of assignments in this course, but he offers a LOT of extra credit. His lectures follow the chapters perfectly. One of those classes that you have to prioritize since there are so many assignments to be completed, but the assignments are pretty easy. Would take another class with him.
