She is ignorant, one sided, and not helpful or educational. She will make you hate women's studies!
always late to class, never has an organized lecture, takes attendance. the class would be good if she wasnt there
Always late. Disorganized. Takes ATTENDANCE even in a large lecture hall. VERY dull. Goes on rants about the evils of white men with money and power. Always ranting. Cusses a lot. I now hate women's studies.
The most horrible professor I have ever taken. Good luck if you have her...she only "teaches" her own opinions. Beware!!
Grace is awesome. Yeah she's liberal and you will hate her if you don't agree with her opinions but she states they are just opinions. Her classes involve reading, discussing and writting 2 papers and doing a project as a final. No testing on concepts just your ideas about the information. Easy A.
In my opinion, Grace Chang is the greatest asset of UCSB's Wm St department. The material she teaches is inherently controversial and she has strong opinions on it--as any intelligent person would--but she is always willing to discuss it with students, regardless of their stances. She is amazing.
horrible professor, i only took this class with her because she teaches both the classes i needed for the minor, i will never again take a class with her
She is intelligent and clear. If you dont like its because you're close-minded and unintelligent. She gives a damn about what is going on in the world and bases her opinions of facts. You want to learn something? Take her class.
Horrible professor. Very biased in class, material is not objective at all. Facts are scewed to support her far-left political opinions and she disrespects divergent viewpoints. Please do not take this prof, as it will make you hate Women's Studies.
Yes, she is opinionated, but she has the goods to back it up. I enjoyed this class greatly, I found it to be quite an eye opener. If you like writing papers, then I also recommend this class, since there is no midterm or final, just papers.
I enjoyed this class because I am interested in the "real" world and what goes on in it. Reading materials are VERY challenging. A lot of tough issues. Chang is passionate about this course matter. If you don't want to be challenged or stimulated DON'T take this course.
Very opinionated, but so is everyone in the world. Brings up interesting ideas. Presents her ideas well, but her approach can prevent some students from feeling safe to question her beliefs.
Awesome, inspiring, empowering.
Do not even get me started...
Grace is the best addition to the women's studies dept. she is often misunderstood by closed-minded students who don't want to hear about problems in the world because it disrupts their pretty, rich, little white lives.
Grace is an excellent professor. many students are hearing the harsh truth about their beloved country for the 1st time and therefore react negatively to the whole course. she does not ask anyone to agree with her-and she always backs up her arguments.
she taught they exact same class as wm st 60 she didnt even have the decency to change the readings. she is a horrible prof. and it was a waste of my time attending her class. unless you have to do not take a class with this woman
i love wm st classes and she is the worst professor i have ever had

I thought she was a very good teacher...knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Very easy T.A.'s and pretty easy class

I agree with all of the material the Grace presents. But it is hard to take the class seriously and put forth a lot of effort because she uses the exact same books/readings/lecture notes for all 3 classes that I've taken from her. And she is constantly late (sometimes up to 20 minutes) to class which is a huge waste of my time as a student.
These classes have been among the most eye-opening I have ever taken. I appreciate Grace's realness. The issues presented challenge critical thinking. There is some overlap in materials but this is the kind of material that one should not visit once, rather many times. The issues are deep and complex and I have yet to meet anyone who just gets it.
Grace Chang is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is extremely passionate about what she teaches and researches and it really influences how active you are in the class. I highly recommend taking any class she teaches.

Grace Chang knows how to teach a subject like this. The format isn't structured tests- but essays, discussions, and reflections. You will be so much better off if you take a class with her. The point is to get something out of it, not to fill out 100 question scantrons, which is awesome.

She's great, passionate about the class and content. She's all about awareness and reality. If you don't want to hear the truth about racism, sexism then do not take this class. It makes you reflect on a lot of things. She's the perfect professor to be teaching this class. Avoid taking Krista Bywater as TA, try to take anyone else available.

Awesome class! Prof Chang teaches about very important topic and allows everyone a chance to voice their opinion. Great teacher, great class. Students just need to be willing to think critically in order to succeed in this course.
Very interesting class. She's not easy but she will make you learn a lot, and if you go to her for help in her study hours she will really help you out.
Lots of work for a lower division class. Don't take if you are looking for an easy quarter. Interesting material, but Grace is just plain crazy!
She was a little too typical angry feminist for me. The material in the class was extremely interesting though, I learned a lot. Makes you view women and poverty through a whole different scope. She will try and weed out people on the first day by saying it's a really hard class but it really isn't. Three short papers and pop quizs, that's it.
well this is a great class that forces you to think, not too hard either... It's too bad the professor kind of kills her own cause by reversing the discrimination she teaches about onto groups of people who have not really been been victims of much discrimination historically.... And she loves it!
I enjoyed the class and Grace was great. She was in your face but in a good way. The class was interesting and changed the way I look at things.
Prof. Chang is nice, but lectures were totally useless except for being there for the pop quizzes. Don't be afraid of her, she is only intimidating for the first few classes. It's totally OK to disagree with her, she respects her students' opinions.
Professor Chang is amazing! She can mumble at times which makes it a little hard to understand but shes great! Midterm and Final are take home papers. Just stay open minded and attend lecture even though lecture seems pointless at times, but she gives pop quizzes so go to class. I got an A and I recommend it.
A ton of work, took up all my time and energy. The material she teaches is good, but the way she teaches turns me off. She takes all she teaches very personally and is very biased at times. She basically tells you what to write in your papers. Her quizzes often require you to remember one sentence out of 3,000. Other than that, the class was okay.
I really want to know why she was late every single class. she never showed up on time. I don't think her lecture was completely useless, there sometimes were interesting things to learn in her class. she was extremely stubborn and opinionated. she made the class feel like she did not like any other race, but Asian.
Chang is incredibly narrow minded and pretentious. Her lectures will put you to sleep especially because they are poorly prepared and always started late. This was my least favorite class at UCSB by far, not because of the material, but because of Grace Chang's terrible teaching.
Avoid this professor! She tends to teach according to her biases. Take this class if you don't want the chance to voice your own opinion.
GRACE CHANG IS THE BOMB!!!! if you want a rebellious professor who is highly passionate in civil right equality and stuff TAKE CHANG!!! (everyone who doesnt like her is usualy white privileged males LOL) CHANG KEEPS IT REAL AND ISNT SCARED TO HURT EELING, OR CUSS!!!
hated this class. not worth it. she was always late. not worth my time at all
She is always late, and her lectures are incoherent. She goes off on hate-fueled tangents more often than she lectures. Every class made me more frustrated with her and with the class itself.
I loved her classes! No, she did not go on and on about her ex husband like other people here are claiming, and there was no "white bashing". She was late every once in awhile, but by what... like 5 minutes? She has to come all the way up from LA. Also, the sections were fun. You have to attend section, there are in class pop quizzes,3 papers.
DO NOT take this class...she cuss the class out everyday and her lectures are about NOTHING! CHRISSY the T.A SUX...she is an extremely hard grader and chang cussin ass did not help! 3 papers(made no sense), in class pop quizzes (only reason why I went) and leading section(that was cool)
I really had high hopes for this class, but was let down. Prof. Chang is cool BUT she was late to class EVERY SINGLE DAY. Waste of our time? Yes. & she got butthurt when we would walk out early. Maybe she should get to class on time... Section was pointless, learned nothing & TA was a sitting vegetable.
This class could have been much more useful if it had been taught by another professor. The professor has made it clear that it is her goal to make the white students feel uncomfortable in the class while she should be teaching the material. She is extremely biased which kills her lectures for everyone that has not turned into one of her puppets.
She's badass! Do not take this class if you are not willing to open your mind.
If you do believe in human rights and social justice, I'm sure you will love this class. Chang is this cursing queen. She is very critical and sarcastic, that's how some students might not be her fans. But seriously she's one of the most informative feminist activist that I have ever met. I don't even care if she gets late to class.
She's craaaaaazy
Professor Chang is completely badass and if students feel threatened by the subject material they are obviously uncomfortable with their own social role in regards to the issues discussed. If she is still teaching TAKE A CLASS WITH CHANG
This is my favorite class this quarter and if you have an interest in immigration policies and how globalization is effecting people in 3rd world countries take this class & even enroll in her honors section! She is such a nice woman even though she may seem intimidating in lectures.
Very one sided discussions. Wasn't into it. Presented good points but the other side was always lacking. Make you feel bad for living in a westernized society.
I think people are way too dramatic about Chang and the classes she teaches. She is a very intelligent woman and opened my eyes up to the problems of globalization. My only critique is that she drops the fbomb unnecessarily and doesn't like other people's opinions. But thats why she's teaching these classes, b/c she is passionate. very interesting
Chang is ridiculous, she's very opinionated, which is normally fine, but she shoves her opinions down your throat. got a good grade b/c i BS'ed everything!as long as you agree with her side of everything, you'll be ok. had to write essays arguing something i didn't really agree with for the grade-has pop quizes in lecture,is ALWAYS 15-25 min late
you either love her or hate her, no middle ground. can't take her seriously-she curses more then the average college student and makes me loose respect for her right off the bat. is too opinionated which is fine, but never shows the other side, only her points and opinions-she complains about how hard her life is when no one cares-dreaded lectures!
u can get a good grade if you agree and argue for everything she does, if you disagree you'll get a bad grade, so just fake it-everyone does.she mentioned this website and how it's just students complaining about prof. but i've done a lot of + ratings and find it really helpful-she doesnt like it b/c she gets bad ratings-let that tell you something
Grace Chang is passionate about her work, inspiriting, incredibly intelligent, and motivating. Thanks to her I became more connected to my community and found ways to apply the theory learned in class to the world outside of our college (Evergreen State College).
hard, boring, weird. she is one of those psycho-profs who is wayyy too personal about her own life than the subject - hence should not teach. always sooo angry, and shoves her opinions right into students' faces. not appreciated. i hope she learns to control her temper soon/ calm the f down
I actually learned a lot from this professor. She might be a little crazy, but I can definitely see where she's coming from although her craziness might bother other people more than it does with me. Overall, I liked the class. Would recommend
Chang's a good teacher, shes passionate about her field and between reading and lecture everything is pretty clear. She is kind of boring in section and she doesnt have the best visuals.
Prof. Chang is an amazing teacher and mentor. Her teaching goes beyond what we are taught to expect from professors. By example, she encourages critical thinking, as well as truly engaging with course material, and challenging dominant ideologies. Her class made me want to care about the material, and not about a grade (how it should be!).
She's the type of professor who will change your life for the best. She's a caring, inspiring, and amazing person, always willing to go the extra mile for her students. She creates safe spaces for so many of us, helping us be critical thinkers - regardless of our background & experiences. Thank you for inspiring us to be social justice advocates!!!
Professor Chang created an ideal learning environment that fostered critical discussion and room for all to participate. Her teaching style is unique and allows for the exploration and engagement of difficult and sensitive topics. She is truly one of the best faculty at UCSB and has been one of the greatest professors I have had in graduate school.
Proffessor Grace Change goes out of her way to provide constructive feedback and encouraged me to be critical of the knowledge I consume. She changed my outlook in academia (for the better!)
Grace Chang is a boss. She is someone who speaks her mind and has POC's backs, unlike most professors at UCSB, She is someone who cares about the well being of her students while inspiring, educating, and challenging them as well. Her classes provided safe space for POC as well informative and educational spaces. I ASPIRE TO BE HER
Professor Chang is a point of strength for me at UCSB. As a 4th year I've gone to her while taking her class and come back when I wasn't enrolled in her class. She honestly helped me stay in school. She's a great professor on/off class. She is REAL. Take her classes and learn to think critically- something many classes at UCSB unfortunately lack.
I have taken two courses with Professor Grace Chang and am forever grateful for all that I learned from her. I am deeply appreciative of the incredible impact she has had on me. She truly cultivated a space where I felt I could be heard as a woman of color and challenged us all to really think critically about issues learned in the courses.
Professor Grace Change is a phenomenally excellent teacher and human being. Professor Chang cares about her students' academic development and wellness to challenge ideas, realities and academic materials while survival the ACADEMIA INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX at UCSB. Professor Chang's communication comes direct, care, thoughtful, and supportive. Da best!
Professor Chang provides her students with guidance and support that makes us comfortable to share ideas. She supported my classmates and I through our work and hard times. As a woman of color this is so hard to come by at SB. I would never be at one of the best graduates schools in the world if it wasn't for her support, lectures, and passion.
Prof. Chang really provides alternative material and perspectives that challenge hegemonic ways of thinking. Her material was very engaging! I personally thought she was hilarious and has me quoting her pretty often. She is one of the few professors on campus to provide a safe space for WOC/POC to speak their minds. Most definitely recommend her!
Section attendence graded. 3 essays (including take home final). pop quizzes throughout lectures. lectures are just her talking. would not take again unless you're REALLY interested in this as in majoring in it. grading is based on subjective ta's grading. a decent amount of readings and a $60 reader
She gives 5 pop quizzes so be sure to do your reading before class. 2 papers, a section facilitation group project, and a final paper or presentation. So passionate about her subject! Loved her class, but definitely a fair amount of reading. Make sure to unpack your essays & elaborate a lot.
Grace is a very sweet and politically active teacher. She really wants her students to be engaged and pay attention during her lectures. Her lectures tend to be quiet unorganized and she doesn't like to use gauchospace. You can opt for a final project at the end instead of the final paper and get a good grade.
Dr. Chang was great. Class covered many important issues including immigration policy, welfare policy, and Structural Adjustment Programs. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there were 5 pop quizzes in lectures that add up to 20% of your grade... so you should go. Lectures are unorganized but your grade is based on papers anyway (from other sources).
She's a very far left professor that constantly bashes on capitalism and men as worldly evils. Unpleasant experience, and her hatred of people questioning her polarized opinions (which the class is based on) is a testament to her hatred of dissent. Seriously, it's cult-like in that lecture hall. Don't take if you don't want to get yelled at.
She's real. Take her class and learn. I loved her class.
Prof. Chang is incredibly nice and clearly passionate about what she does. Not a lot of reading, 3 essays (including final paper), pop quizzes every 2 weeks or so. Class is really interesting and she shows a lot of compelling content. Provides a healthy environment for discussion and a safe space especially for women of color.
3 papers (1 final), 5 pop quizzes, super reading heavy, facilitation in section. Essay grade depends on TAs who were cool. Amazing lectures, inspiring, really eyeopening class. The readings were long but beneficial and eyeopening. Love prof chang. One of the few profs at UCSB who cares about her students.
She is so caring great professor tells it how it is. She is interesting and is a great professor.
She is passionate and an amazing professor.
By far the best professor I have had at UCSB so far. Her lectures are easy to follow she cares for her students and TA's. She's the kind of professor who shows up for her students. If you get a chance to take of her classes I would highly recommend it.
Worst prof I've ever had at UCSB. Unorganized class structure, uses lecture time on tangents unrelated to course material, sends req. readings thru email (difficult to find/over 95+ emails sent this qrt.) & does not use a recurring Zoom link. Inconsiderate of the fact tht students are paying hundreds of thousands of $ for insufficient education.
The subject material in this class was very interesting, but the class itself was a bit disorganized bc info is given to students through email and nectir, not gauchospace. The class is worth taking for the information we discussed but it definitely wasn't my favorite class. I think it might have been more engaging in person, but I'm not sure.
Professor Chang is a realist and addresses women issues (and other disadvantaged groups) from that perspective. Students are encouraged with her teaching style to come up with practical ideas to advocate for social justice work. I really loved the class, and I learnt so much that I was convinced to take on Fem studies as a minor.
