Wonderful discussions, very knowledgable, wants you to learn! Excellent!
Great class!
Fasenating class!!
Nice prof. but a little tough of a grader, nitpicky. Too much group work.
Take class with this prof if you want to be inspired, not if you're a slacker!
Very helpful and nice prof. Good discussions but too much group work.
Awesome class, soooooo much fun, learned a lot, only essays no tests
Knows her stuff, but too much group work (and VERY cheerful at nine AM)
Nice Person, can learn a lot about writing if you want to, too much group stuff!
fast talker, too much reading, picky, don't take her if you aren't a hst major
You will learn a lot from this lady. Very un-opinionated, fair, and open minded!
my fav. hist prof so far, very cool sometimes a little boring but; take her
very helpful, wants to give you a good grade, but you have to work for it
Wonderful, smart, nice, passionate, changed my life!
great prof, learned a lot, knows her stuff
Best prof. I ever had. Learned fun, interesting topics.
Best history prof. at GVSU. Really nice, organized, and knowledgeable.
on of my fave history profs - very knowledgeable, made class interesting
Boring as heck. Hated the microthemes
very nice lady. No tests just papers. Picky grader.
tough teacher, but learned alot, very helpful and kind, highly recommended
Nice teacher, no test all papers but kind of a hard grader. Lots of writing assignments and tons of group work.
Great Prof.! You will learn if you read and pay attention. Gets funnier as the semester goes on, she will joke around with you. Group work helps you understand the material.
She is the awesomest Prof at GVSU. She teaches like she knows her stuff and respects your opinion. Because of her I'm going to grad school. IF YOU NEED HELP WITH ANYTHING she will help you. If you do the readings and actually think you will do well.
tuff grader, can be a pain
Knows her stuff and makes what could be a dry subject interesting. Class discussions mixed with lecture help keep things interesting.
Tried for years to get into this class and finally did with a close class permit! If the class is closed keep going to it.She was extremly nice and SO smart. Really made you think. She does grade hard, but then the good grades she gives are very rewarding.
funny, smart, awesome, understanding, liberal...but, be professional in her class. come prepared to work well with others!! oh, and she DOES grade hard, but it makes you a better person.
Im a business major taking this class as a theme. Im glad I had her, but after being in FIN, ACC, MKT all day I found myself saying, what am I doing in this class with a bunch of History majors?
Only take her if you are a liberal feminist who will agree with everything she says, if you like to talk in class and do a lot of group work, and if you don't care about your GPA.
Prof. Coolidge is as good of a professor as they come. She absolutely loves history, teaching, and helping people do well with their education. She is open minded, non-biased, and a blast. You will work a ton, but you will love it!
She has "l'air" of a 2nd grade teacher but don't let that fool you. A very strict paper grader, but always with a pleasant disposition. She expects the best, but then it is an honors class... Make sure you include women in everything you do in
She seems nice, like someone you could really like. Don't be fooled. It's no coincidence she teaches a class on witchcraft. If your papers aren't at least half about women's role in history, consider that about 15% off your paper right off the bat.
very knowledgable about hst. she expects alot out of her students. hard grader.
Very nice. Helpful. Difficult in grading but you get a chance to redeem papers by rewriting them. A lot of work. A lot of work. A lot of work. Be prepared to work very hard just on the reading alone withought everything else. Interesting class though.
Really, really nice woman. Amazingly helpful. Somewhat hefty amount of reading. Papers require motivation and determination; don't slack! And please use her as a resource--turn in drafts, go to office hours.
Dr. C is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She expects excellence & grades hard but FAIRLY... she will not give you a grade you didn't earn. Expect to work hard, this is not an honors class for no reason. Ask for help if you need it!
Very rewarding but difficult class. Readings are nearly impossible to keep up with but are necessary for discussions & papers. Good lectures, interesting discussions. You'll learn a lot.
A very large amount of work for this class! The lectures are interesting, but if you're not very good with history, forget it! These classes are for die hard history fans or majors. If taking for a theme course you may want to reconsider.
Very enjoyable class and professor. Any class with her will be interesting and fun, though it will be work, but all work is clarified and understandable
I really didn't think I'd enjoy this class but after taking her, I really did. Her lectures are very interesting. It's a lot of work though! And she is a tough grader, but she is willing to help you all the time! Do the readings. I would recommend her to anyone!
Took this class awhile ago. Still the class I learned the most in. Coolidge expects a lot but takes into consideration each student's abilities. Without a doubt, would recommend, but only if you're not afraid of earning your grade. No easy A's here. Overall, excellent teacher and class.
Expect to do a TON of reading, every night, day, bus ride, even when you are sleeping. Other than all the reading the class isn't that bad. She is really nice and helpful, but loves Imperial Spain. If you are not interested in Imperial Spain do not take her for HST 300.
The class consists of a lot of reading and writing, but the prof. makes it interesting as well. Definately talk to her about your papers before you hand them in so you can get some feedback...it's very helpful.
The class was very interesting. She was very clear and obviously interested in what she was teaching. Fair grading. I would recommend both her and the class.
extremely nice teacher very smart and very thurough. harsh grader though. hands on activities gets whole class involved in group work. didnt think i was goin to like her in the begining then i grew to really like her alot
if your not interested in the class it is hard, too many books to read, we have 8 and read them all. the grade for the class is all on papers and the papers are graded pretty hard. prof is nice and willing to help though
It's a tough class but she warns you ahead of time. She knows her stuff and is very willing to help when needed. Tough grade.
Prof. Coolidge is one of the best profs I've had at GVSU. Be prepared to take a LOT of notes during class, but it's well worth it when it comes time to write the papers. She's a tough grader, but go and see her- it definately helps! She's more than willing to help you succeed.
She doesn't give much information on the essays you are required to write. She is also a hardcore feminist.
Terrible, she grades to hard espically if your not a HST major
i loved prof coolidge. she was so nice and incredibly helpful when it comes to papers. she grades super tough on them but if you take her a rough draft she will seriously tell you everything you need to do to make it better. sometime the material was boring but she had great activities for us to do so it definitly helped make it interesting.
She is a very difficult grader and has somewhat unreasonable expectations. Take any other section of Eurociv and you will have a much much much easier time. Make sure your papers all discuss women OR ELSE
I had prof. Coolidge last winter semester and she was great, she took her time and told you that it was going to be a diffecult course but if you went to visit her she would help you out.
A whole lot of reading that you absoulutely have to do, 4 papers (one is the final), and 10 or so pop quizzes on readings. This was a very interesting class and Prof. Coolidge is a good lecturer. Though she expects a lot out of you, she is more than willing to read over papers and give advice before turning them in. I'm glad i took her class.
She was a pretty tough teacher. Her discussions were not hard to participate in as long as you did the reading. She grades papers pretty tough. I tried asking for help a lot for one paper and she still gave me a bad grade when I tried to take her advice.
don't listen to those "honors" college students... coolidge is an excellent professor. she is more than willing to read essays and give help. yes, she assigns a good amount of readings. yes, she expects well thought out papers... but this is college, people! you're not in high school anymore. go to a cc if you're looking for an easy degree.
Coolidge is great. Very nice, intelligent, and very clear. Lots of work in groups for easy A's. The reading is not as extensive as Smithers, and the papers require you to work for your grade. Her bark is worse than her bite however, as visiting her office hours will help you immensely.
This is an extremely difficult class. While Dr. Coolidge is a good person and knows her stuff, she is going to expect a lot out of you. Expect to have at least a dozen books per semester for this Euro Civ sequence, and be prepared to read all of them and more. Also...hardcore feminist and is obsessed with her thesis statements. Good luck!
Professor Coolidge is extremely helpful in class. She does require a lot of work, but she makes herself completely available to help with any questions. It is extremely important to attend class and participate in the discussions because it will help when you have to write the papers.
DO YOUR READING, meet with her as often as you can, and expect to lose some confidence as a competent paper writer. You really do get out of this class the amount that you put in.
Dr. Coolidge is such a nice professor! Yes, the class is challenging, but she is more than willing to help. Talk with her about all of the papers and frequently participate in class and you will do fine. I have learned so much from this class and I am more confident in my writing skills. Recommend.
She is very hard. At first I hated this class and thought I was going to do really badly in it. I hate the subject and believe me this was my last choice for the honors sequence. However, she is a very good professor who really knows her stuff. Even though she is hard her class has really challenged me and I have grown a lot from it.
Her courses are not designed to be easy, but are designed to make the students participate in the class discussions and readings. As a student, it is imperative that you work to earn the grade as she will not just hand you a grade. I learned more than what the course was designed to teach, and for that I would recommend any of her courses.
If you do the readings, come to class, pay attention, and ask questions, you will do fine. If you don't like writing papers, this isn't the class for you. Coolidge is a fair grader and extremely knowledgeable on the subject - she makes every class interesting. Definitely recommended, but not if you have a busy semester. Bug work load.
She is great professor who is passionate about what she teaches which is very helpful for students. However, she requires a lot of reading for her class. This class was supposed to teach how to write essays for history classes, however she does not teach. She does group work every day and gives very little guidance on how to write a good essay.
She is an amazing teacher. She clearly loves what she is talking about. However, there is a lot of reading to do, and there is four major papers. Do the reading, ask questions if you don't understand, and you'll do just fine.
I love her. She is an amazing teacher and I have learned a lot about both History and writing from her. This is not an easy class but if you put in the effort you can get a good grade. I highly recommend taking a class from her.
Dr. Coolidge is a very helpful and nice professor. This class requires a lot of reading, and it can be quite a burden. Papers make up most of your grade. Make sure you start them early so you can ask her for advice on them. While the class is very difficult, you can still earn an A. It will make you a much better writer as well.
Prof Coolidge is great! She is very interesting to listen to in class and always willing to help her students. She assigns a lot of work but none of it is busy work, it all has a purpose and can be very beneficial to learning if taken seriously. If you do the work, listen in class and work hard, I don't see why you wouldn't get an A. Love her!
This professor was awful. The absolute worst professor at GVSU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I wouldn't take her class ever again even if it was offered for free
Prof. Coolidge really knows what she's talking about. She is a tough grader and there is a lot of reading but she loves history so her classes are interesting. Overall she is a great professor!
She is so nice and straight forward! You get lot of pop quizzes, but they are easy if you do the reading. She gives you everything you need for the midterm and final exams, even the essay questions. I hate history, but she made this class one f my favorites! I highly recommend her!
Professor Coolidge is great, super helpful. She's always willing to communicate and work with students. She is a tough grader, but she wants her students to do well and I definitely became a better writer after taking her class.
Dr. Coolidge is a wonderful woman and professor. The class is a lot of work, but very rewarding. Grade derives from participation, reading quizes, and 4 papers. She definitely knows what she's talking about and really cares about the grades her students recieve.
She's an amazing teacher. Really does well to keep you interested in the class, and knows what she's talking about. She's super perceptive of her students, and will push back assignments if she thinks you're overworked.
Dr. Coolidge was a great professor. She really knows her history. Just make sure to write the papers well in advance and go to her office hours to be successful
Professor Coolidge is amazing! I loved her and this class! She is a tough grader, but that's because she genuinely wants you to succeed. She is always willing to help you out (seriously, go to her office hours). You will read a lot, but you will also learn so much from the discussions. I couldn't have asked for a better professor!
Dr. Coolidge is one of the nicest, most helpful professors; you can tell she cares deeply about you and her class. Her class is tough however if you put in the work you should be fine on the papers. My only complaints are that there is too much reading for a 3 credit class, and it is unreasonable to grade participation and attendance as is done.
Prof. Coolidge is a great professor but be prepared for a lot of reading and writing. For a gen. ed class you do a lot of writing. You grade basically depends on the three papers you write plus the final exam. Expect to read 20-30pgs for hw. We had quizzes about every week, but are fairly easy if you take notes on the reading. NO TESTS:)
Was great but you needed to be there everyday and we usually did some sort of group discussion o some sort. You will need to read the textbook or you won't pass. No tests just three really easy papers that you have way more than enough time to write. The final was an essay to two or three questions and you get a notecard of info to answer them
Prof. Coolidge is fantastic. She knows her material. There is a lot of reading but it's needed to understand. I learned a ton in her class. She is more that willing to help all the time. Very supportive, WELL organized, her lecture supports the process for writing the papers, helpful if you que in to that. You know what she expects from the start.
Incredible professor. This class will consume your life but she is fair, intelligent, and caring. Had her freshman year and still one of my all time favorite profs.
Worst professor at GVSU. She was not helpful at all during office hours. I would never ever take another class from this teacher in my lifetime.
I genuinely loved Professor Coolidge! She is clear about all her assignments. You know exactly when you will have a quiz or paper due, however there is a TON of reading.
a great professor, she really cares and is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. plus she is super helpful. but she is a tough grader though.
Coolidge is a great professor, she is the best prof out of the 3 for this sequence. This class is very extensive and will require a lot of work if you want a good grade. 2 essays which she allows rewrites on and she provides good feedback so you know exactly what you need to change. 1st semester is definitely harder than 2nd. Doesnt put in grades.
Coolidge was an amazing professor. Always worked with me when i needed help or needed help with my grade. Always pushed you to get the grade she felt you deserve. She really loves what she does and she puts that into her work, which is very noticeable. 10/10 would totally recommend
I love love love Dr. Coolidge! She is so sweet and considerate and cares a lot about her students. She wants you to do well and understand and appreciate the material. There is a lot of reading and class participation matters a lot but it is a very interesting course and she is an amazing professor.
Prof Coolidge is a great teacher who knows what she is talking about. The only downside to her class is the large amounts of reading that has to be done and the weekly quizzes over said reading-- which is expected for a history class of such magnitude.
GREAT professor. Lectures make you want to listen, but you have to take notes on everything in order to get all the information down in order to write papers. Class is made to build on itself to make sure you get everything done. TONS OF READING and you must do it to understand and succeed. Worth taking if you want a caring professor.
Professor Coolidge is a great professor! HSC 201 was heavy on papers and reading so make sure you are prepared for that if you choose to take this class. I visited her office hours to get advice before each paper, which I would definitely recommend. I learned so much in this class. She keeps the class engaging with participation opportunities :)
Professor Coolidge is a great professor but I wish she taught us how to write papers more at the start of the class because if you struggle you will struggle bad in her class. Her Exams are just 3 papers with the final paper being 25% of your grade. She is an amazing professor and will give you feedback. Participate and Read. Hard Class.
I loved professor Coolidge so much! She is a really tough grader but it's not hard to get at least a B in her class. She listens to what you have to say and answers questions easily. She is very passionate about her lectures and you can tell she really loves history. I am so glad I took professor Coolidge!
She comes across at caring but if you disagree with something she says or a comment on a paper or assignment watch out. She holds grudges and it will reflect on your next assignment. Best to avoid and take a more sympathetic professor.
This professor is very nice and caring. Attendance is mandatory as you get participation points. She will grade participation by giving you a notecard if you answer a question. Class had LOTS of reading and the quizzes were all based on the reading and not lecture. The topics on the quizzes are taught after you take them which makes no sense.
Terrible Professor. All that matters in her class are the papers and the topics are ridiculousness. If you take her class I hope you enjoy reading useless and boring books. Would not recommend
My first-day in class I was extremely worried after she read through the syllabus because I thought there's no way I could do it. This class has 4 books and yes, you read them all. Lots of reading, discussions and papers. She is super nice and helpful but you need to ask for help if you need it. Super rewarding but you MUST DO THE WORK.
She was a very nice teacher and understanding. Only downside is that see assigns a lot of papers and is a tough grader on them. also dropped a lot of money on books.
I wasted $250 worth of books that were used once. The only thing that mattered was the papers with terrible topics. The Database project dropped my grade because the directions were contradictory. This class is a great argument for why gen ed requirements need to end.
There is a lot of reading and homework for HNR 151-152, but Prof. Coolidge is amazingly compassionate and will accommodate you if you ask (she pushed a paper back over 1 month for one of my friends). She is really passionate about what she teaches and gives very organized and interesting lectures. Not all of the reading needs to be done to do well
Coolidge is the sweetest woman ever. She is unbelievably knowledgable. There is a ton of reading in this class, but the reading itself wasn't graded. No exam, your whole grade was based off of 3 assignments + participation. Very sweet lady who just wants to help. She lets you rewrite all of your papers and you can go up a whole letter grade.
. She is a tough grader on papers, but this won't be a problem if you do the readings, take notes, and/or meet with her in office hours to go over your thesis or paper. She does number students off into groups, so if you have social anxiety heads up. But she is very knowledgeable and very passionate about the content and cares for the students
I loved Professor Coolidge so much that I enrolled in another one of her courses after having her for two weeks. She's a very educated person and passionate about what she teaches! There are a lot of readings and writings for the class but she goes over what she expects in great detail. Attendance is super important!
This class is basically a book club that you pay for. Her lectures are very short and she breaks into group stuff for a majority of class. She will rip your paper to shreds for all the little details that you may miss out on, and will ignore the historical content of your paper. She treats it like a writing class as opposed to a history class.
Coolidge made lectures so interesting and fun! I definitely recommend her and want to take her again, she is so sweet
What bothers me about this prof is the participation grade. She expects you to raise your hand every single time you come to class, and lowers your grade if you don't. She also grades you on how often you come to office hours or stay after class to talk with her. I think it is unfair to grade students based on this rather than content learned.
This class was so interesting and worth every second spent reading/writing. Papers aren't too terrible to write because sources are gone over and quotes are analyzed in depth during class. Lectures are super engaging and fascinating. I loved every book we read (even though the list seems daunting at the beginning).
Professor Coolidge's class is a challenge, but her engaging lectures and helpful office hours make the workload manageable. Consistent reading, note-taking, and unstuck ai for study prep are key to success.
Prof Coolidge is impossible. There are only 4 papers to write total and 1 group project, but discussion is required in class otherwise she takes away a large percentage of your overall grade. Grading papers is impossible, even as someone who works in the Writing center. Her grading is moody and she gives AI users higher grades than writing majors
Amazing. Course graded on few papers, but super helpful and understanding professor. Amazing teacher and passionate about teaching. Read the book and write the paper and you'll do well. First 2 papers get rewrites.
Professor Coolidge is a kind person. Overall, I enjoyed her class as I learned a lot, however the workload for it being a gen ed can be a lot. It could get overwhelming as she is a tough grader for papers even though there are opportunities for re-writes. If you don't mind constant readings take this class, if not, this class might not be for you.
She treats the class as a writing class. Grades papers extremely heavy, honestly don't recommend taking the class if you don't like writing or talking. you won't get away with not talking unless you want to lose points. don't take in the morning kills your whole day.
Tough grader grades based on writing not actual quality. Must be in class all the time otherwise your grade goes down a lot for in class participation. She does a thing where everytme you answer a question you get a notecard and write your name on it and turn it in at the end of class.
You will take a total of 10 quizzes, complete 3 exams, and 1 project. Absolute horrible grader. She assigned a 3-4 page paper (end of the project) and claimed that my paper "didn't have enough explanation." My paper was 5 pages, and I went way more in depth than needed. Also, the notecard thing is dumb, talking should be free not a chore. 67.
